COVER: Matt Lanigan with partner Emily Azzopardi, father Gerald Lanigan and Weblec Eagle.
Welcome to the first edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria for 2020 and to what promises to be another extremely busy year for our sport in Victoria. Before I discuss what’s coming up and what GRV will be focusing on in 2020, there’s a couple of key points we all need to be aware of. Firstly, preparing for bushfires. GRV has been working with Greyhound Clubs Victoria to make sure all regional clubs are prepared for emergencies. If you are in a high-risk area, I strongly urge you to have a fire plan in place now, which is also a requirement in the Establishment Health Management Plan (EHMP) under the new Code of Practice. You can visit: www.cfa.vic.gov.au for advice on fire preparedness and contact your local club about locally available services and support. And you should also make sure you’re familiar with GRV’s recently updated Hot Weather and Transport Policies at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/policies-and-guidance. The second key point is the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds which came into effect at the start of this month. It’s very important in terms of both greyhound welfare and the sport’s reputation that all participants are compliant with the Code. This includes ensuring your greyhounds have a current C5 vaccination from 1 January 2020 and completing your EHMP if you haven’t already done so. To help participants who still need assistance with meeting their compliance obligations, GRV have put in place additional resources for the Code Support Line on 1300 144 360 or email: codehelp@grv.org.au. We have also just released an updated Rehoming Package, available by calling GRV on 03 8329 1100 or at: visiting: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/rehoming/rehomingpack with all the information and forms needed to make owner transfers for retiring greyhounds Code compliant. And we’ll soon be announcing additional support for participants who may need help with Code compliance such as completing their EHMPs.
The first priority is about building the sport’s commercial activities to generate more revenue that we can invest industry development, infrastructure and boosting prizemoney and other returns to participants. This will include working with new partners with specialist skills to increase and diversify markets and income streams along with new event and destination promotions.
CEO’S UPDATE
CEO’s Update
The Racing Safety & Greyhound Welfare priority will include a 10-year safe racing plan to deliver track and facility upgrades and replacements along with initiatives to encourage and support quality breeding, whelping, education, training and rehoming practices. A big part of this will be working with participants to achieve genuine self-regulation that’s consistent with community expectations and builds community acceptance. And our One Industry priority is about developing a shared vision and set of objectives that connects all participants, clubs and all stakeholders as a strong and unified sport with a truly national approach to industry development and promotion. So, you can expect to see a lot of exciting new initiatives being rolled out this year to keep growing our sport as a vibrant, ethical and sustainable code - one that delivers great entertainment and thrills for a growing base of fans and supporters. And final, I’d like to offer my best wishes to you and your families for the New Year.
Alan Clayton Chief Executive Officer Greyhound Racing Victoria
Looking ahead, for 2020 and beyond GRV will be focused on delivering three strategic priorities: Innovation to Drive Revenue; Racing Safety & Greyhound Welfare; and One Industry.

Minister for Racing Martin Pakula congratulated Mr Miller on his appointment to the board, where he will serve as deputy chair. Mr Miller brings a wealth of experience to the role. He has been chief executive of Sandown Greyhound Racing Club since 2010, building the club’s reputation and hosting one of the biggest greyhound racing events in Australia each year – the Melbourne Cup. He will step down from that role at the end of the month. Prior to his time at Sandown, Mr Miller held executive positions with the Richmond and North Melbourne football clubs and earlier in his football administration career, he helped to oversee the move of South Melbourne FC to Sydney.

Simple Simon BY PETER QUILTY
Flying machine Simon Told Helen notched his third group win last month with an unadulterated display of sheer speed in the Group 2 Queensland Derby (520m) at Albion Park.
Simon Told Helen ($1.35F) defeated local hopes Cooper Dooper ($31) by two lengths, with Farmor Fearsome ($26) six and three-quarter lengths away third in a slick 29.65sec. Trained at Little River by David Burnett, Simon Told Helen also has the G3 Great Chase and G3 Cup Night Sprint ‘sitting on the mantelpiece’. He’s registered eight wins from 13 starts, with stakes totalling $154,065. “I’m stoked for the young pup, he just keeps doing everything right,” Burnett told Racing Queensland following the race. “He’s a pleasure to train, and it’s a pleasure to have him in the kennels. The owners aren’t very happy with the odds they’re getting, but they’re living with the spoils of winning the race. The week we’ve had is fantastic and we’ve got a dog for a long time to come that’s going to keep them going.” Simon Told Helen wins the QLD Derby

Young Henry isn’t too sure about this white stuff…
An Aussie grey, in the USA BY PHIL WEIR
Henry was adopted at The Meadows in April 2019 and settled into his Melbourne home easily, with parents Marjan and Hugh; but change was in the air. When Hugh was offered a job in New York State, it was time to move; lock, stock and Henry. Marjan explains the process. “For moving Henry to the US, he only needed to get a rabies vaccination. No need for quarantine. We used a pet travel company to make sure we had all our t’s crossed and i’s dotted.” “They sent us the paperwork to fill out, provided a travel crate for Henry and they sent pictures of Henry throughout his journey. Henry travelled from Melbourne to LA, where he had a mandatory 6-hour stopover so he could stretch his legs and have a bite to eat.” “Then he flew to New York City. He got delivered to the Airbnb where we were staying. He quickly did a pee and poo and went straight to bed. The next day he did sleep a lot (but) after that he was his quirky old self again.”
To paraphrase, Marjan’s first Instagram post was ‘stole their hearts, stole their couch, stole their bed.’ Sound familiar? There have been myriad new experiences. “The house we bought doesn’t have a fenced yard, so I use a 40-metrelong leash. That way Henry has a little bit of freedom to sniff around. First time he saw a deer he had no idea what to think. He wanted to chase, as greyhounds do.” “The deer we saw up close (Rudolph?) was a bit of a surprise. All three of us were standing there like deer in a headlight. Just staring at each other. He’s used to them by now. I think he sees them as big dogs.” There’s also the New York snow. “It’s the first time ever Henry witnessed snow. He doesn’t know if he likes it yet or not. He’ll go out to do his thing, but then runs and hops like a snow bunny to go back inside.” “The other day we took him to the local vet as he was due for his annual vaccinations. And we wanted to know what to look out for here. The vet was very impressed with Henry’s “muscle butt” and recommended to have Henry vaccinated for lyme disease and leptospirosis (carried in deer pee).” “We can’t wait to celebrate his “first” birthday with us and our first Christmas together.” You can follow the exploits of Henry’s exploits on his dedicated Instagram page; instagram.com/an_aussie_grey_in_the_usa/
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA JANUARY 2020
We’ve heard a few stories of Australian GAP greyhounds heading off to parts elsewhere, so it’s only right we can now report on the latest traveller; a six-year old boy called Henry, who has found himself in Warwick, New York.
By September, Henry was ‘an Aussie grey in the USA’ (which is also his Instagram account name).

GRV General Manager Strategic Communication & Marketing Louise Martin seals the agreement with Melbourne Aces’ General Manager Justin Huber.
The dogs go in to bat. New partnership between greyhound racing and baseball Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) is now a Premier Sponsor for leading Australian baseball team, the Melbourne Aces, a partnership that will help showcase both codes across their audience bases.
GRV’s General Manager for Strategic Communication and Marketing, Louise Martin said the sponsorship agreement was a first for both Victorian greyhound racing and Australian baseball.
The sponsorship will include greyhound racing signage, promotions with prizes at Melbourne Aces games and across social media platforms for the 2019-20 season.
“GRV is very pleased to partner with one of the stars of Australia’s newest professional sporting competition who like us, are based in Victoria, the nation’s leading sports state,” Ms Martin said.
A founding member of the professional Australian Baseball League, the Melbourne Aces are a recognised winter league of the US’s Major League Baseball code. Based at the Melbourne Ballpark in Altona, the Aces have an all-time record of 177-220 over the past nine seasons and many of their players have gone on to Major League Baseball, including the National League 2018 Rookie of The Year, Ronald Acuña Jnr. Established in 2010, the current Australian Baseball League has eight teams based across Australia and New Zealand and is looking to expand to 10 teams for the 2020-21 season. Greyhound racing is Victoria’s second largest racing code with 13 greyhound racing clubs hosting more than 1,100 race meetings annually and a record $2.37 billion wagered nationally on Victorian greyhounds in 2018-19.
8
Melbourne Aces’ General Manager Justin Huber said the team was excited about the new partnership with GRV. “Victorian Greyhound Racing is a vibrant, entertaining and thriving sport with animal welfare at its heart and we are keen to work with them to raise the profile of both our codes.”

“Go The Red Dog” bushfire fundraiser Greyhound Racing Victoria will donate $250 to the bushfire appeal every time a greyhound wins a race from the red box at any Victorian track during the month of January. GRV Board Chair Peita Duncan, along with the Chair of Greyhound Clubs Victoria, Adrian Scott, said GRV, the 13 Victorian clubs and participants had a proud history of banding together to help those in need and the “Red Dog’’ initiative was just one way we could all show our support to the thousands of Victorians going through tough times. “We will also be naming a race at every meeting in honour of our brave emergency services personnel who, day after day, are putting themselves on the line to fight these horrendous fires,’’ Ms Duncan said. “Our hearts go out to all those affected, and I will be cheering the red dog all through January and hope we can raise tens of thousands of dollars for fire affected communities. “In addition to the “Red Dog” appeal I know most, if not all, of our clubs will be holding their own separate fundraisers.” Ms Duncan said Warragul had plans for a fundraiser at its Cup meeting and Sale also planned to raise funds at its Australia day meeting. “So, cheer on the “Red Dog” in January and get along to your local greyhound racing club to support this important initiative for the Victorian community.’’ With 17 dogs winning from the red box in the first four days of January the “Red Dog’’ appeal is off to a flying start with $4250 already in the bushfire appeal.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT
BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING
VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The new Code of Practice will require all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination from 1 January 2020. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are slightly more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine.
New Transport Regulations for Victoria
Rehoming Package now available!
On 14 December 2019 the Minister for Agriculture released new regulations for the transportation of animals in Victoria (Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2019). These regulations impact on ALL Victorians including participants of Greyhound Racing.
GRV has recently re-released a new Rehoming Package with new forms to support Code compliance.
To support participants, GRV have updated the GRV Transport Policy to reflect the relevant changes to transportation requirements. The updated transport policy can be found on the Greyhound Care and Standards webpages; but the changes to the two relevant clauses are shown below: Clause 7 now reads “The surface on which greyhounds are transported must be non-slip, weight bearing, and able to be effectively cleaned and disinfected. On days where the ambient temperature is 28°C or above, greyhounds must not be placed directly onto the floor of a metal trailer or metal vehicle surface. A layer of insulating material must be provided to protect the greyhound from contact with the metal floor.” Clause 22 now reads: “A greyhound left unattended in a stationary vehicle or trailer must be managed as follows: (a) when the ambient temperature is below 28°C, the greyhound must be checked at least every 20 minutes;
The Rehoming Package enables a GRV registered owner to comply with the requirements of The Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds (the Code), and to transfer the ownership of the greyhound on the GRV Microchip Registry to the new pet owner. The Rehoming Package contains two booklets: 1.
Re-homing Guide – Information for Participants
2. Pet Greyhound Post Adoption Care Guide (that must be provided to the new pet owner by the GRV registered owner upon rehoming) Importantly, the Pet Greyhound Post Adoption Care Guide contains the Notice of Retirement as a Pet – Transfer to New Owner form and the Re-homing Statement. Completion of these forms, AND the provision of the Pet Greyhound Post Adoption Care Guide to new owners, will ensure compliance with all requirements in relation to rehoming under the Code. The Re-homing Package is available on the Rehoming section of the GRV Greyhound Care & Standards Website: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ Hard copies of the package are also available at most clubs or you may also request a copy by calling GRV on 03 8329 1100.
(b) when the ambient temperature is 28°C to 31.9°C, the greyhound must be checked at least every 10 minutes; (c) when the ambient temperature is 32°C or above (i.e. a hot weather affected journey), the greyhound must be checked at least every 10 minutes and the airconditioning must be running in the vehicle or trailer at all times. Unattended is defined as the greyhound not being visually checked to ascertain its physical state.”

FastTrack was updated mid-December 2019 to place thirdparty pet retirements (retirements to re-homing group or any person who is not the last registered racing owner) go into a ‘PENDING’ status until the new (pet) owner’s details are verified by GRV. There is no change to the retirement process on FastTrack, however, the racing owner will note that the greyhound’s status remains as Racing or Unnamed and it remains in their MyDogs list until GRV confirms the pending retirement; and they will receive an automated email advising them of this. Once the new owner’s details are verified by GRV, and the retirement has been finalised on FastTrack by GRV.
WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT
PENDING Third party pet retirements are now live
To ensure GRV can confirm the retirement as quickly as possible, GRV requires all the new owner’s contact details; FULL NAME, COMPLETE ADDRESS (including post code), PHONE NUMBER and EMAIL ADDRESS (if they have one). In addition, an ALTERNATIVE CONTACT NAME and PHONE NUMBER are required (if the new owner can’t be reached in the event the greyhound is found loose); for example, the alternative contact can be a friend or family member.
Workshops GRV is currently reviewing workshop locations and dates for 2020. Please speak to your local club manager if you have a preference for a specific topic you would like to see offered at your local club. Workshop topics and booking information can be viewed at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/workshops.

While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early.

For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia.
Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.
GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab. For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

RACING UPDATE BY GREG KERR, GENERAL MANAGER, RACING
Gravel Road (an external consultant) is now working with me, specifically around race meetings and the overall meeting calendar. We will develop several modelling tools which will allow us to better understand the economic outcomes, and how we can get the best commercial returns for each. This is essential to ensure we can maximise revenue so we can reinvest back into areas such as stake increases.
Dealing with the heat has been quite challenging over the past month. The placement and times of our meetings has been all over the place, however we have managed to stage most meetings in one way or other. Thanks, must go out to my teams for achieving this, it’s been challenging for them especially when multiple areas and clubs are affected. Traralgon demolition is well underway, it is worth mentioning that because of the demolition there are currently no services available at the venue.
The recent extreme hot weather has highlighted the fact that we needed to introduce a Fire Rating Policy which we can apply when the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) announces a CODE RED alert. This is going to be introduced simply to ensure the safety of participants and dogs because the code red days fall outside the current heat affected policy we currently have. It will give clarity on where people can and can’t go while these alerts are in place.
Dog population continues to show improvement with just under 60% of all races having 8 runners, and new starters continues to show a positive trend. All good indicators for the coming months. The grading and coursing reviews are well underway with good feedback from the company that is doing the review for me. They have and continue to interview a wide range of participants to get a real feel of the issues you are all facing. The reviews will continue for the next month before coming back to me with their summary and draft recommendations.
Once the hot weather settles down a bit, and we have just a few more dogs racing, I will be looking to implement a trial of where we will run 14 races at some venues. This will obviously help both GRV in terms of revenue, and our participants ability to earn a bit more in stakes.

Do you have a spare, unwanted or unused trailer? GRV is looking to lease spare air-conditioned trailers from mid-January to mid-March. If you can help, please contact 0402 970 650 or 0429 553 411. Calendar is subject to change. Visit fasttrack.grv.org.au for the latest GRV Racing Calendar.
The Victorian Government’s Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds is now in effect as from 1 January 2020.
If you are unable to print and would prefer a hard copy of the EHMP, your local club will have hard copies on hand.
GRV has already received a large number of Establishment Health Management Plan (EHMP) declarations from participants and we thank those who have completed them.
Once you have completed your EHMP and had a vet sign off the necessary protocols, you will need to submit your online declaration that the EHMP is complete and has been signed off by a vet. This will only take a couple of minutes.
GRV understands that some participants, especially those in the East Gippsland region are currently dealing with bushfire issues but now that the Code is operational, its important at this time to make sure all participants are aware of their Code obligations. There is no need to panic if you have not familiarised yourself with the Code of Practice or completed your EHMP yet, GRV are keen to support you. The best place to start is by reading the actual Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds at: agriculture.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_ file/0010/348166/Code-of-Practice-Keeping-RacingGreyhounds.pdf If you would prefer a hard copy of the Code of Practice your local club have hard copies on hand. Once you have familiarised yourself with the Code of Practice you can start on your Establishment Health Management Plan (EHMP).
You do not need to submit your EHMP to GRV. The online declaration form can be found here. Greyhound Records will now need to be kept for all greyhounds on your establishment, except for those that are retired pets. GRV encourages you to use FastTrack to complete your Greyhound Records, which can be accessed through MyDogs (Actions/Greyhound Record). While GRV have produced a hard copy template Greyhound Record which can be used instead, you may keep greyhound records in any way that suits, provided you keep all of the information required by the Code in a way that can be passed on with the greyhound if it leaves your care. GRV are here to support participants comply with the Code of Practice, so if you need more information, visit the Code of Practice webpage. Alternatively, you can call the Code Support Line on 1300 144 360.
Here is a link to the online Establishment Health Management Plan (EHMP).

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA JANUARY 2020
The EHMP is a document required by the Code that contains protocols to describe how you complete your greyhound activities and manage your establishment. You can either use the prewritten GRV protocol template (14 of which will require vet sign off) or you can write your own.

Changes to Shepparton Boxes Shepparton’s 390 metre boxes will be replaced with 385 metre roll-on boxes from 9 January 2020.
All greyhounds of Grade 4 or better will be regraded back to Grade 5 due to the reduction in distance.
The shift in box placement is to encourage greyhounds to run in a straighter line out of the boxes rather than deviating towards the rail.
WORD FROM THE GRADER;
Director, Racing Safety, Clubs and Infrastructure, Scott Robins said, “This decision was another recommendation handed down by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) who are continually working with GRV to improve the safety of Victorian greyhound tracks.”
Nominations for the new 385m boxes for the 9th January 2020 opened on 26th December. For a short period of time there will be two nomination options for this distance to allow nominations and grading up to the final 390m race on 6th January. The 390m distance will be ‘turned off’ once the 6th January meeting has been graded.
“The roll-on boxes have been trialled for a six-week period of which we have received positive feedback regarding greyhounds positioning out of the boxes.”
These are things that everyone involved is responsible for achieving, and that cannot be achieved without everyone working towards them. Many have worked incredibly hard in Victoria over the last 5 years to make a step change in the way that our sport is conducted.
GOTBA REPORT 2020 is a year of challenge for Victorian greyhound racing. Variously, we have a new Code of Practice that has only just commenced, increased racing competition from other States and a wagering market that is mature and from which we cannot expect ever increasing revenue without significant investment and innovation by the sport itself. As participants we expect to have safe, economically viable racing within a sport of which we can be proud and that respectfully supports all people and animals working within it day after day. By safe and economically viable, we mean one where track and club infrastructure, welfare and prizemoney investment and results are carefully considered, calibrated and, when needed, recalibrated to attract and retain people and animals. By pride we mean a sport whose integrity (in the sense of compliance and fairness) is strong and which is aggressively forthright in promoting the racing product and the people who create it. By respectful support, we mean a sport where the massive reserve of knowledge of participants is understood, considered and used, and where the role of each person working within the sport – participant, steward, administrator – is treated with understanding of its importance and what is required to carry it out, so that we can ensure that it is.
Participants at all levels especially, including even now in terms of Code investment.
GOTBA Vic in 2020 Our focuses in 2020 involve advocating for participants big and small on issues that affect us. In particular, ensuring that participant voices are heard, understood and are reflected in decisions (participant voice), ensuring that Code implementation reflects participant perspective and concerns, (code) and, most critically, ensuring that prize money step change (to reimburse and reward participants for their hard work and step change) is front of mind (prize money).
AND ANOTHER THING January is renewal month for GOTBA Vic membership. Those members who are due for renewal will have already received either email or direct contact from us regarding their membership renewal. We encourage all members due for renewal to renew (and all those thinking of membership to join) – we are stronger together.
Lynton Hogan President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.

GOTBA REPORT
Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the preentry assessment sessions are now booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au.
Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au
All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■ have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and ■ not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.
GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.
Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived.
