COVER: Legends in the final stage of the Australian Cup; Fernando’s Riot edges past Hardaway Winnie.
I’d like to congratulate Fernando’s Riot and Anthony Azzopardi on a great run at the Australian Cup last Saturday. And the team at The Meadows once again did a wonderful job of presenting one of the peak events in Australia’s greyhound racing calendar. It was also a historic race, broadcast live and free to air as an hour-long special on the 7 Network, the first of three such live broadcasts this year as part of the greyhound magazine show The Thrill of The Chase. GRV has been working with participants, clubs, Crocmedia and the 7 Network to bring The Thrill of the Chase to the screen as part of one of GRV’s three new Strategic Directions – Innovation to Drive Revenue. This direction aims to proactively build our brand, increase customer engagement and develop new markets, products and content - to generate more revenue that we can reinvest in infrastructure, welfare and returns to participants. The Thrill of the Chase will help achieve this by giving current fans more in-depth content focused on major meets - while also providing a great introduction to the sport for those who don’t know much about it. You can read more about the return of The Thrill of Thee Chase in this edition of the Monthly. The Australian Cup also saw the announcement of the final tally for GRV’s “Go The Red Dog” fundraiser where $250 was donated to the bushfire appeal every time a greyhound won a race from the red box at any Victorian track over January and February. $100,000 was raised and I thank all participants and clubs for their support of this initiative. Beyond “Go The Red Dog”, GRV will continue to hold board meetings, leadership team meetings and branch meetings in rural and regional towns and cities impacted by fires as a very practical way of showing our support by spending money locally through accommodation, food, petrol and other services. Following an outbreak of Canine Gastroenteritis in greyhounds within Victoria, Greyhound Racing Victoria has moved to mandate the isolation of any new greyhounds arriving into the state to prevent any further spread of the

In other news, I’m pleased to announce that GRV has released an updated version of the Watchdog mobile form guide that includes a dedicated live stream and you find out more in this edition. Also covered in this issue is Todd McKenney’s return as the 2020 National Greyhound Adoption Day Ambassador. The previous National Adoption Days in 2018 and 2019 were a great success and I encourage you to spread the word about this year’s National Adoption Day on 19 April. Speaking of spreading the word, GRV is working to correct outdated, misleading and inaccurate facts and figures about greyhound racing in Victoria that have been recently quoted in some media outlets. We have put together detailed information for media and key stakeholders about the sport’s economic, social and community contributions, reform outcomes and the welfare and integrity measures now in place. Over March, myself and Louise Martin will be meeting with regional media around the State to brief them about what’s actually happening in Victorian greyhound racing today. GRV is also posting social media snapshots about the sport’s contributions and achievements in recent years and I encourage you to share them so that more people are informed about the real story behind our sport.

How the race was won: Was actually slow to commence from Box 6 but received a clear passage in the run to the first turn. He then moved into third position down the back straight, albeit some four lengths off tearaway leader Hardaway Winnie. For a split second he looked as though he may go around the ‘pilot’ turning for home but opted instead for a rails run. It proved a winning move and he got up right on the line, with Hardaway Winnie ($7.00) finishing second and dual G1 winner Whiskey Riot ($2.70F) – a litter brother of Fernando’s Riot – one and a half lengths away third in 29.72sec. He was also a finalist in last year’s G1 Adelaide Cup.
How the race was won: Began well from Box 2 but was the ‘meat in the sandwich’ at the first turn. Subsequently he was forced back to midfield, spotting leader Rockstar Beav around eight lengths with a lap to travel. However, he displayed a strong will to win and in a thrilling finish defeated True Detective ($3.20) and Just Terms ($2.50F) in 42.31sec. It was Here’s Tears’ first G1 victory, after finishing runner-up to Just Terms in the G1 Zoom Top a fortnight earlier. In late January, Here’s Tears set a new Sandown 715m track record of 41.16sec.

It was Legendary Lad’s first win from only three starts.

It’s week a big month for Anthony Azzopardi
BY PHIL WEIR When it comes to listing the most significant years in recent history, 1969 must be right up there. John Gorton was Australian Prime Minister and Richard Nixon held office in America. Both the Jumbo Jet and the Concorde had their first flights. The Beatles performed live for the last time on a roof in London and announced their split a few months later. It was the year of Sesame Street, Woodstock, Charles Manson and ‘one giant leap for mankind’. In the greyhound world, Benjamin John won the Australian Cup, Odearo was the ‘rock star’ dog packing the fans in at Sandown and Olympic Park, and a young veterinary surgeon - Dr Anthony Cole – began what would be a 50-year role at the Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club. In February, Tony Cole announced his retirement from OTV duties. To say that ‘things have changed’ is something Tony can shed light upon. He recalls “Back then there was no contract, no protocols, minimal rules. Everything was done by ‘gentlemen’s’ agreement with the Club.” “In the early days, meetings were fun family events. The greyhound was the family pet. Mum Dad and children would meet and greet, huddle around burning logs in 44-gallon drums, and watch their dog race. The kennels were awash with dark theories and treatments, complaints, arguments and ‘advice’ to the Vet, but above all a willingness to help each other and enjoy the meeting.” The dress codes of the time also provided Tony with an unexpected role. “On Ballarat Cup nights dog handlers were expected to wear bow ties and starched white shirts. To many this was a disaster. So, we made 2 pre-race checks.
Firstly, I would check/fit the bow ties, then check the dogs.” The changes continued. “GRV brought in more rules and protocols which certainly improved behaviour and prevented problems. The family pet became absorbed into syndicates and trainers and large dog trailers, and families would stay home and watch it on TV. Race meetings were locked in by Sky TV and off-course-betting. The Greyhound world became industrialised.”

Ballarat GRC farewells veteran Vet
Tony was born in Melbourne and earned a veterinary degree – and Doctor of Philosophy – in Queensland. Despite his dedication to the dogs, as a partner in Ballarat’s Eureka Veterinary Practice, his speciality was birds. He has also been a passionate contributor to local arts, in particular the famous Royal South Street competitions and Her Majesty’s Theatre. So, what’s next? “I retired from general practice in 2010 but continued working as OTV until my health said ‘no’. Retirement means continued help to some community groups and reading a stockpile of books.” “Over 50 years with the dogs, it has always been a pleasure to greet all the ‘happy’ dogs, the dogs who rush up expecting a cuddle, and to pacify the nervous ones coming over the infamous Ballarat table. Measuring body heat, pulse rates, tail injuries, bandage procedures, and other things have maintained my scientific interests in the sport. There are always little things to discover.” “It has also been a great privilege to have worked with so many amazing people and their dogs throughout the decades of changes in the world of greyhounds.” While we remember those individuals who made headlines 50 years ago, it’s inspiring to also recognise the significance of one man’s continued contribution ever since, and his devotion to those participants we treasure the most: the greyhounds. Thanks, Dr Tony.

Keeping Greyhound Records now even easier!
Greyhounds, which came into effect January 1 2020. The keeping of Greyhound Records also means trainers will satisfy the requirements of GAR 84A - Treatment Records to be kept without having to keep these separately or in addition to greyhound records. For more information on Greyhound Record, or to request printed copies of the simplified Greyhound Record template and reference table:
A Greyhound Record is created in FastTrack for all greyhounds bred in Victoria. This can be accessed from your MyDogs page once a greyhound has been added to your FastTrack kennel (known as a submitting a Kennel Return). To use Greyhound Record on FastTrack, log in to your account at fasttrack.grv.org.au. We recognise that some participants choose to keep these health and veterinary treatment records on paper, so to make this process more straightforward, GRV has made available a simplified manual template that participants can use, along with a handy reference table of Injury, Illness and Health Management event types, locations and treatments, that matches the options in FastTrack. The Greyhound Record must accompany a greyhound when it moves to a new establishment, even if only for short term or temporary movements, e.g. for an Education program or for whelping a litter. As well as health and veterinary treatment records, the Greyhound Record includes all vet issued certificates, reports and treatment plans. When using FastTrack to keep records, copies of vet issued paperwork can easily be provided to the next establishment when a greyhound moves by taking a photo and sending it by text or email. The keeping of Greyhound Records for all greyhounds from birth is a mandatory requirement of the Victorian Government’s Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing

Sennachie retired to stud Multiple Group 1 winner Sennachie has been retired to stud. Trainer Steve Bruce White, alongside owner/breeder Kirin Corby, made the decision following the Gold Bullion but wanted to make sure everything was in working order before they announced his retirement to the breeding barn.Straws from the son of Fernando Bale and Rhonda Rocks will be available from mid-March at the starting price of $2,500 for females in season. “The demand for Sennachie has been enormous,” trainer Steven Bruce White said. “As much as we want to see him preforming on the track, we are excited to see what he is able to throw into his pups.” Sennachie has more than proven himself on the track. A winner of the Group 1 Maturity Classic at The Meadows as well as the Brisbane Cup and Gold Bullion at Albion Park. In addition to his Group race victories, Sennachie also holds the 520-metre track record at Albion Park and has the three fastest times run over distance. Sennachie will remain a Victorian with White holding him at stud.
Industry Notice from Stewards The Stewards would like to highlight the requirements of National Rule 105 to all participants and the inherent need to advise the Controlling Body (Stewards) of any temporary arrangements when a greyhound comes to or leaves a property, to be kept at another address or if the greyhound is in the control of another participant (the trainer goes on holiday) that is not the official trainer.
These circumstances also apply to interstate participants coming here for feature events. Interstate greyhounds often stay with local Victorian-based trainers through feature event series and these temporary stays must be notified to GRV. Interstate trainers racing in Victoria and Victorian trainers housing interstate greyhounds at Victorian kennels temporarily must advise stewardsadmin@grv.org.au in writing of the greyhounds they have, where they will be kennelled, what races they are here for, who is in charge of the greyhounds (name and contact number) and the dates (duration) of the stay. This is a basic requirement that fulfils a participant’s obligation under the Rules of Racing. For any queries, please contact the Stewards direct.
Duties of person keeping greyhounds R105 Notification of control and location of greyhound (1) Except in the circumstances described in sub-rule (6) a greyhound shall at all times be kept at the registered address of its trainer or owner unless permission to do otherwise is first obtained from the Controlling Body. (2) A person shall not permit a greyhound of which the person is not the trainer or owner to be kept at the person’s premises unless permission has been granted pursuant to sub-rule (6). (6) Where a trainer or owner leaves or proposes to leave a greyhound trained by him in the control of another trainer or attendant (not being a minor) for any period, the following provisions apply(a) the trainer or owner shall notify the Controlling Body in writing before doing so that he proposes to leave a greyhound trained or owned by him in the control of the nominated person specifying the period during which the greyhound is to be left; (b) the person in whose control the greyhound is to be left must be currently registered with the Controlling Body and must have previously consented in writing to being nominated as the controller of that greyhound during such period; and (c) the Stewards or the Controlling Body must approve the leaving of the greyhound in the control of the nominated person before the nominated person can perform any act of a registered person.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA MARCH 2020
Permissions must be sought and received prior to the occurrence. Trainers must apply and advise stewardsadmin@grv.org.au in writing of what is proposed and why (i.e. going on holidays, going to Sydney for the Easter Egg Series etc) with the greyhounds concerned, where they will be kennelled, who is in charge of the greyhounds (name and contact number) and the dates (duration) of the stay.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT
BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING
VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The new Code of Practice will require all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination from 1 January 2020. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are slightly more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. ■
Gastroenteritis outbreak in greyhounds Many of you will have heard of the widespread highly contagious gastroenteritis (vomiting/diarrhoea) outbreak in greyhounds (of all ages) in WA in Dec-Jan, with a similar outbreaks ongoing now in QLD, NSW, NT and SA. Testing has detected several infectious agents; however, it is a strain of Canine Coronavirus that is primarily responsible for this disease in dogs. Please note this Canine Coronavirus is not related to the ongoing Coronavirus epidemic in humans. Symptoms vary from dogs being mildly off their food and vomiting and/or diarrhoea for 1-3 days, through to severe vomiting and diarrhoea that requires veterinary treatment. There have been young puppy deaths reported but no adult race dogs are reported to have died due as far as is known. Many greyhound kennels have been affected, with some kennels having 100% of their greyhounds affected. Similar infections have also been reported in domestic dogs; either where these dogs have been in direct contact with race dogs or they are pet dogs of racetrack kennel staff. This condition has had significant impacts on interstate race fields and has the potential to spread into Victoria due to the movement of greyhounds, equipment and people. Participants need to re-visit their biosecurity and disinfection protocols to help prevent the disease from entering their property. Some basic principles of good biosecurity include:
10
■
always wash your hands after handling greyhounds on other properties or on track;
■
place shallow buckets of Domestos or other hospital grade disinfectant at the entry to all kennelling/dog housing/training areas for visitors to dip their shoes in before walking in;
■
clean pens daily and disinfect at least once weekly, more often if any signs of disease – ALWAYS return greyhounds to their own pen after exercise, training, toileting etc. If you allow greyhounds to change pens without disinfecting, you could be spreading the disease before your greyhound has symptoms; and
always disinfect pens, bedding, food and water bowls and toys/enrichment items when they are changed between greyhounds; this can be done in a dishwasher or washing machine (depending on item) set at 65°C or higher.
If a greyhound shows some signs of infection or you suspect infection, seek veterinary attention immediately. Immediately isolate the sick greyhound and any other greyhounds that have been in close contact with it. Provide staff with separate overalls and boots for use when handling isolated greyhounds and always wash hands and change shoes if they move to handling healthy greyhounds. It is always best practice to deal with the healthy greyhounds before attending to the isolated ones (i.e. move from ‘clean’ to ‘dirty’). If you suspect one or more greyhounds on your property may be infections, you MUST scratch these greyhounds from any races they are nominated for; and you should consider scratching any other greyhounds from property. Also if you notice any symptoms in kennels, please notify GRV by phone (0417 375 999) or email (notify@grv.org.au). More information is available at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ccv.
Kennel Cough prevention The state-wide Kennel Cough outbreak in 2017 highlighted how a more serious outbreak would threaten the racing program by further depleting the availability of racing dogs. Kennel Cough could prevent a greyhound from racing for several weeks, and as affected dogs can also be infectious for weeks after they recover from symptoms, outbreaks have the potential to keep ‘smouldering’ for long periods of time. As we are approaching the colder months, now is the time to start vaccinating your greyhounds against Kennel Cough. Vaccination, while not always 100% effective, is the best protection, by significantly reducing the chances of an outbreak, and reducing the severity of symptoms of affected dogs. The new greyhound Code of Practice makes it mandatory to keep your greyhounds’ vaccinations ‘current’, and this includes an annual Kennel Cough vaccination. Vaccination against Kennel Cough (the 4th and 5th components of a C5 vaccine) can be given at the same time as a C3 or as a separate vaccine, by intra-nasal, oral or injectable routes. GRV recommends the intra-nasal Kennel Cough option as it has been found to be the most effective and fast-acting vaccination, and only needs one dose (does not require a booster a month later). GRV also recommends
ensure compliance with all requirements in relation to rehoming under the Code.
If you want to book your greyhound into GAP, you will need to check the GAP vaccination requirements (introduced on 1 March 2018) which are quite specific for Kennel Cough. Please see the notes on the GAP page in this edition or contact GRV or your veterinarian if would like more information.
The Re-homing Package is available on the Re-homing section of the GRV Greyhound Care & Standards Website: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/rehoming
Re-homing package available now GRV has recently released a new Re-homing Package with new forms to support Code compliance. The Re-homing Package enables a GRV registered owner to comply with the requirements of The Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds (the Code), and to transfer the ownership of the greyhound on the GRV Microchip Registry to the new pet owner.
Hard copies of the package are also available at most clubs or you may also request a copy by calling GRV on 03 8329 1100.
Workshops GRV is currently reviewing workshop locations and dates for 2020. Please speak to your local club manager if you have a preference for a specific topic you would like to see offered at your local club. Workshop topics and booking information can be viewed at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/workshops.

Todd McKenney commits to a third year as National Adoption Day Ambassador

BY PHIL WEIR
To promote the suitability of greyhounds as pets nationally, every Australian state will host an adoption day on April 19 to rehome former racing dogs. It’s the third of its kind and each year results in more than 400 dogs finding their retirement homes. McKenney has two pet greyhounds of his own and said he fell in love with the breed since hearing about greyhound adoption from a friend. “People’s perception of a greyhound and the reality of what a greyhound is actually like as a pet are often two different things. They are such a beautiful breed and often misunderstood.” McKenney said. Todd is currently playing Lord Farquaad in the production of Shrek – The Musical. Victoria’s adoption day will be held at The Meadows racetrack.

Live greyhound racing comes to Seven in a historic deal
The third special on Friday 27 November will deliver live coverage of the Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup from Sandown Park, the biggest night of greyhound racing on the national calendar with more than $1 million in prizemoney across the 12-race programme.
Greyhound racing will to return to free-to-air television this year as a series of one-hour live specials on the Seven Network, Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) Chair, Peita Duncan, announced today.
Joining the specials will be the return of the greyhound magazine show Thrill of The Chase, a five-part, one-hour series later in 2020.
“GRV will be working with Seven to screen three of Victoria’s biggest race nights across 7mate/7TWO in a historic deal for the code,” Ms Duncan said. “This will provide great coverage for fans while giving more people the opportunity to discover the speed, passion and colour of greyhound racing.” The first special featured the TAB Australian Cup at The Meadows on Saturday 29 February. The second will cover The Launching Pad at Sandown Park on Thursday 9 April, when Australia’s only sweepstakes series returns with $420,000 in prizemoney for the nation’s best emerging greyhounds

Developed by GRV with Crocmedia and hosted by Jack Heverin, James Van de Maat and GRV’s Molly Haines, the Thrill Of The Chase debuted in 2019, taking viewers inside the world of greyhound racing and showcasing its brightest stars. The live broadcasts and magazine program, supported by TAB, will be produced and distributed by Crocmedia’s TV production company Rainmaker and broadcast nationally. Ms Duncan said the package of specials and the return of The Thrill of the Chase was a significant investment in the future of the sport that would help grow its audience base.

Watchdog App: now better than ever. GRV’s GM Marketing and Strategic Communication Louise Martin said the new Watchdog gave punters even more information at their fingertips when wagering on the sport in Victoria.
The Watchdog mobile form guide app now gives punters access to data on winning percentages from every box, across all distances, at every Victorian greyhound racing track in Victoria. This, along with dedicated live vision of all Victorian greyhound races via Sky Racing and more detailed information for punters are some of the new features in the latest version of The Watchdog mobile form guide.
“It’s always been GRV’s plan to continually update The Watchdog to reflect the depth and strength of Victoria’s greyhound racing offer and this new version of the app makes it one of the most comprehensive of its kind in the world,” Ms Martin said.
It also boasts new and expanded in-depth form, including an animated early speed indicator for each greyhound on all Victorian race cards.
Launched last year, The Watchdog app provides detailed form guides for every Victorian greyhound race and runner, expert analysis and tips, box statistics, suggested bets, a TAB click to bet function, race results and the latest greyhound racing news.
Other enhancements are a fixed odds market mover icon to denote the runner with the largest fixed odds market move and the ability to toggle fixed odds fluctuations in real time. Existing functions such as Click To Bet, detailed form guides, expert selections, prize money details and TAB race replays have also been made easier to access.
This free mobile app is available at the Apple and Google Apps stores now.

GOTBA REPORT
Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the preentry assessment sessions are now booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au.
Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au
All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■ have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and ■ not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.
GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.
Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently.
