GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
CEO’S UPDATE It has again been another very busy month for Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV). Seven of GRV’s eleven stakeholder engagement workshops (covering nine topics) have now been held, generating comprehensive discussion and new thinking about a range of issues, and this is covered in more detail in this edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria. One workshop topic, breeding and breeding controls, looked at how we can make sure that enough greyhounds will reach the tracks ready to race for the sport’s long term future, while also ensuring that as many retired greyhounds as possible will have the best rehoming opportunities. On this subject, GRV has also been studying a recent downward trend in litter numbers and the implications this has for future breeding controls. In other news, GRV is now conducting greyhound qualifying trials under full race conditions. Following consultation with participants, GRV Stewards and a full complement of club staff will now manage all Qualifying Trial meetings. Trials in the new format are being held at Ballarat and Cranbourne and GRV’s Racing Operations Team will continue to monitor the demand for such meetings and program future trials accordingly. GRV is also analysing the results of recent finish on lure trials and is considering the next steps in relation to finish on lure. On the subject of racing operations, I’m pleased to announce that Karen Lees has been appointed as GRV’s new Chief Steward for a two year period. You can read more about Karen and what she brings to the role in this issue. GRV is also planning to invest $34 million over five years in upgrading infrastructure across the State to improve racing operations, track safety and to further strengthen local clubs as multi-purpose community venues. To help drive this major capital works program, GRV has appointed David Straw as our new Senior Infrastructure Projects Manager. David started his project management career as an architect and has worked in the Victorian Department of Education and Training, the Cities of Whittlesea and Yarra and at RMIT, Deakin and Monash Universities and for several construction and project management companies. As part of this program, work has now started on a $1.8 million redevelopment of the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club with the first stage, installing a new, compliant electrical switchboard now underway. GRV has also appointed Craig Monigatti as the Club’s new manager, which is something of a homecoming for Craig, who grew up in the region and went to school in Warrnambool. Craig spent 14 years as Technology Support Manager and Operations Co-ordinator at Carlton Football Club, has a Bachelor of Applied Science and Management and is currently completing an MBA in Sports Management. GRV is also appointing an external administrator for Warrnambool and there will be an announcement about that soon. Looking ahead, some of the issues that GRV is currently focused on include consideration of the Report by the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry in New South Wales, developing new policies and programs based on the input from the Stakeholder Engagement Workshops and the 2016 Victorian Greyhound Awards to be held at Sandown in August. Despite recent challenges, there are many achievements over the past year that will be celebrated. Alan Clayton Chief Executive Officer Greyhound Racing Victoria

“I am conscious of providing a watchable show for viewers. I feel a bit more pressure when I am giving my tips on GRVextra because I am analysing one race so there is no room for error.” James’ talent was in full force when he ran the Punters Club on Warrnambool Cup night in May where he turned on-course punters $10 investment into a $46.20 return.
PROFILE
The Punter’s Punter James Van de Maat
Training greyhounds is a hard caper in its own right; early mornings and late nights are all part of the job. Then add race calling, RSN radio commitments, GRVextra hosting and co-parenting seven beautiful greyhound puppies to the mix and you end up with the overextended professional life of James Van de Maat.
When James isn’t tipping winners, calling races or tending to his greyhounds he enjoys a ‘wack at golf’ or the occasional snowboarding trip, but most of all he enjoys working around his soon to be state-of-the-art greyhound property. “I wish there were longer days because it’s hard to get enough sleep. But his partner, Chloe Allan, is very supportive, and without her it wouldn’t be possible.” As a relatively new greyhound trainer, James has a number of heights he would like to scale, including wins in the Group 2 Laurels Classic (515m) and Group 1 Sapphire Crown (515m) at Sandown Park, as well as his local Group 2 Healesville Cup (350m) and Group 2 Western Australian Oaks (520m). James can’t see his future without greyhound racing, whether he’s calling, presenting, at the track, working his dogs or chasing puppies around the house. Greyhounds are a part of his life he said he could never live without.
Words by Molly Haines Photos by Clint Anderson
James is fast becoming the face of greyhound racing in Victoria - a trusted commentator, caller & tipster. From five years of age a passion for racing saw James trackside with his father on countless occasions. But it wasn’t greyhound racing that sparked his interest in race calling, rather a horse racing PlayStation game. “As a kid I used to call the races while I was playing the jockey in the game, from 10 years of age it became something I always wanted to do,” James explained. James’ dream ticket into the world of race calling came through RSN greyhound caller Paul Hammon. “I sent a video of me calling a race into Paul and he told me I had a lot of ability.” After 10 years of calling, James admits he still gets nervous although he has become a bit more relaxed. But he continues to run through the same rituals - down to the coloured connector textas he uses to decorate his form guide each meeting. Work through the binoculars and microphone during race meetings helped him prepare for the next step in his career, as a presenter on GRVextra - in front of camera, where he gives his tips in race previews on all Group 1 races and Country Cups.

Stakeholder Engagement Workshops
Update
Following reports by ORIC (Office of the Racing Integrity Commissioner) and the CVO (Chief Veterinary Officer),Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) is in the process of improving its regulatory framework and making significant improvements to the welfare of racing greyhounds in Victoria. Part of this process involves collecting much needed data and feedback from people most experienced in the industry i.e. the participants. As such, GRV has scheduled a series of Strategic Engagement Workshops to identify core issues surrounding nine key topics, which will be discussed across 11 workshops throughout the state between 10 May and 6 August, 2016. All 11 workshops are being conducted by IEDEX, an independent facilitator, with the object being to collect intelligence to assist GRV in making informed, strategic decisions about the future of greyhound racing in Victoria, particularly in relation to the welfare of the greyhound throughout its entire lifecycle.

Strategic Priorities
Strategic Priorities
Strategic Priorities
• Location and capacity of tracks and training facilities How will GRV ensure adequate investment is channelled into trial tracks and training facilities, without over-investing itself, to ease current bottlenecks and support the growth of the industry?
• Reducing injuries resulting from congestion, interference and collision How will GRV affect changes to track design and lures to reduce the incidence of injuries resulting from congestion, interference and collision?
• Reduce the euthanasia rate of Victorian greyhounds Provide greater encouragement for participants to get their greyhounds to the racetrack, and to be more accountable with regard to re-homing.
• Lifecycle monitoring of dogs To implement ORIC Recommendation 2, how will GRV know where each Greyhound is located at every phase of its lifecycle from whelping through rearing, educating / breaking, pre-race training and racing? • Sustaining industry skill levels How will GRV ensure the industry is supported by a sustainable supply of highlevel expertise for the rearing, educating, breaking and training of greyhounds?
Conclusion 1. Produce a balanced investment profile by clubs, council and private operators to ensure training tracks and facilities are matched to the demand in each region in Victoria. 2. The second strategic challenge is to use its regulatory powers to ensure minimum standards are maintained in the industry without overly constricting the supply of facilities and expertise.
• Reducing injuries resulting from less than ideal track surfaces How will GRV support clubs to produce consistent, safe track surfaces? • Reducing injuries by improving lure and end-of-race arrangements How will GRV change race day practices and the rules of racing to improve the safe performance of lures and end-of-race dog catching?
Conclusion: 1. To substantially improve its data collection, analysis and dissemination activities to enable stronger evidence-based decision-making. 2. To improve consistency in track safety between clubs. The ideal would be to produce a Victoria-wide approach that sets the standard in Australia and the world for reducing greyhound injuries through track design, safety and lure operation. 3. Internal allocation of accountability for relevant data gathering, analysis, information dissemination and acting on the evidence.
• The breeding controls GRV should implement to achieve this Increase breeder qualification requirements and closely monitor the success of individual breeders with a view to providing restrictions around the number of litters they can breed.
Conclusion: 1. Build stronger framework relating to competency with regard to licensing. 2. Provide greater education to participants with regard to best practice breeding and rearing. 3. Provide restrictions on new breeders and those with poor records of breeding. 4. Influence the culture of greyhound racing participants, to always consider, and take responsibility for, the future of their greyhounds once they are no longer suitable for racing, especially breeders and owners. 5. Provide incentives for people to get their greyhounds to the racetrack.

Betty is Now an Angel
such a decorated career, Diane still finds it difficult to pick one race as her favourite.
By Bonnie Chignell
“My personal favourite was the Sapphire Crown because both Betty’s Angel and Leprechaun Pace were in it. Leprechaun Pace was leading the race most of the way and Paul and I were arguing during the race about who was going to win, thankfully Betty ended up winning so I won that one too!”
10 years ago Betty’s Angel broke her maiden status at the Meadows in a best of the night time of 29.76sec, as the Bartolo family watched the beginning of what would turn out to be an amazing journey. By the end of 2007, Betty’s Angel had won the Group 1 2006 Sapphire Crown, Group 1 2006 Melbourne Cup, Group 3 2007 Interstate Challenge held at Angle Park, Group 1 2007 Perth Cup and was crowned the 2006 Greyhound of the Year. “Betty was always something special. She broke in really well, Betty and her sister Miss Mini Mouse were the best two out of the litter. When we used to trial them people were so surprised when we told them their age or level of experience – there was a lot of talent there from the start,” said owner Diane Bartolo. Sadly at the end of 2015, Betty’s Angel passed away but left a legacy that would not be forgotten. “Mum’s name was Betty and she was always interested in the greyhounds and always asking us how they were going. Paul and I decided to name a dog after her and we came up with Betty’s Angel, so we always believed that mum was watching over all of us,” Bartolo explained. During her star-studded career, Betty’s Angel amassed almost half a million dollars in prize money ($441,570) from 43 races. With
“Overall though, I actually cannot describe the Melbourne Cup. The whole family was there and it was so surreal. To run that time (29.51sec) was exciting, Betty’s Angel and Miss Mini Mouse getting the quinella for our kennel and being the first litter sisters to ever do so made it feel almost like an out of body experience. It’s hard to put it into words,” said Diane. “During the time of Betty’s Angel, she gave hope to the small trainers and breeders, and all of a sudden they had a ‘we can do it’ mindset.” The Bartolo’s will not only remember Betty’s Angel for her stellar career, but also for her loving nature; she will always be known for her wagging tail and love for people. “Betty was such an amazing dog and she created so many memories for Paul and I and even my son Ray who always handled her. I will always say that she was an absolute superstar and I believe a greyhound like that only comes along once in a blue moon.” After Diane’s Mum, Betty passed she bought Superstar and Blue Moon roses to plant on her grave.

Following the GRV Workshop: Track Design, Track Preparation and Lures, the Traralgon and Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Clubs have volunteered their tracks to take part in a trial that will see the preparation of their track surfaces modified for racing and trialling. Initially this will involve regular harrowing of the tracks along with other methods aimed at producing a safe racing surface. Participants should be aware when nominating for these meetings in the coming months that the racing surfaces may vary. GRV and the Clubs will update their websites with any pertinent information. Penetrometers and Moisture Meters All 13 GRV Clubs have taken delivery of Penetrometers and Moisture Meters. Participants may see track staff using these devices on the tracks, initially the testing will revolve around collating as much data as possible and then a set of parameters will be produced for each venue. GRV will then start to publish these readings as a part of the information pertaining to track conditions prior to race meetings.
GRV Ambassador With a slender frame and explosive speed, star footballer Nick Dal Santo would seem to be the perfect match for Greyhound Racing Victoria. The North Melbourne veteran last month signed on as an ambassador with GRV, in a role that will aim at increasing awareness of major events and the thrill of owning a racing dog. Dal Santo has a long and accomplished career since he was drafted by St Kilda in 2001, having played more than 300 games for both the Saints and Kangaroos. Along the way he has had two top-three finishes in the Brownlow medal, played in three Grand Finals and has been named in the All-Australian team in 2005, 2009 and 2011. Dal Santo also has an affinity with rural and regional Victoria having grown up in Bendigo, right near the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Club.

With 11 of GRV’s 13 tracks based in rural and regional Victoria, Dal Santo is a perfect fit as an ambassador for greyhound racing right across the state.

THE REFORMS SO FAR...
New Local Rules of Racing for Victoria, many in direct response to recommendations in the Racing Integrity Commissioner and Chief Veterinary Officer Victoria reports, are now coming into effect in Victoria. They include: The requirement for participants to make every effort to re-home fit and healthy greyhounds and to provide evidence of such efforts when requested by GRV. Participants now need to notify GRV in writing if they intend to euthanise more than five greyhounds in any four-week period. They can do this through a form on Fast Track’s ‘Retirement’ page at https://fasttrack.grv.org.au/ which must be emailed, faxed, posted or hand delivered to GRV at least seven days before the intended euthanasia date. All lures must now be approved by the GRV Board. Approved lures must be safe for use by greyhounds and people and made only from synthetic or artificial materials with no animal materials. Participants must also get approval from GRV if they keep domesticated pets or agricultural animals on their premises. A two month transition period from 14 June to 14 August 2016 will allow participants to make sure they are compliant and facilitate the upgrade of Fast Track to provide a user-friendly notification and approval process for this requirement. Under the new rules, prescribed categories of greyhound training properties also need to comply with certain conditions and be registered with GRV. The new property registration categories and conditions will be finalised following input from the current round of stakeholder engagement workshops. A full list of the new local rules and FAQs can be found at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/rules-of-racing/.
New Chief Steward Appointed Greyhound Racing Victoria is pleased to announce Karen Lees appointment as the new Chief Steward. M s Lees brings a wealth of experience in a range of areas having worked as Director Compliance for the Victorian Commission for Gaming and Liquor Regulation as well as Senior Director Strategic Risk and Intelligence at the Australian Taxation Office. She also has a Masters in Organised Crime and an undergraduate degree in Policing and Journalism. GRV Senior Investigations Manager Charlie Bezzina announced Ms Lees’ appointment recently. “This is a vital appointment in ensuring the highest integrity for Victorian greyhound racing and Ms Lees will be part of a commitment to continue to make GRV a leader in Australian greyhound racing,” Mr Bezzina said.
Strategic Communication & Marketing Monthly Report Louise Martin - General Manager, Strategic Communication & Marketing June has been another action-packed month for the Strategic Communications and Marketing team. Our video content has had a strong focus on informing both the public and industry participants which has been evident in the educational videos and the interviews around the Stakeholder Engagement workshops. With so much change happening in what is a complex and issues rich sport, it is important to be open and clear with all information available. We hope that we are going some way to providing that information to everyone involved, be they trainers, owners, punters or animal lovers. As well as keeping everyone informed, we are also sharing the heart-warming tales of the lovely dogs that are at the heart of everything we do at GRV through the series of videos titled Every Greyhound Has a Story. There have been some big announcements throughout June that have been warmly received such as the appointment of Gavin Goble as our new General Manager of Animal Welfare, a new manager of the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club in Craig Monigatti, the redevelopment of the Warrnambool facility as well as new national and local laws. Finally, as already mentioned in this edition, we are pleased to announce the appointment of star AFL footballer Nick Dal Santo as a new GRV ambassador. We have embarked on this partnership as part of a push to help us reach out to consumers who are not currently engaging with greyhound racing. Nick will play a key part in increasing awareness of major GRV events and greyhound racing in general as well as creating awareness of the thrill of owning a greyhound. 9

Horsham Cup Zambora Brockie the King of the West By Andrew Copley
Zambora Brockie also won the Warrnambool Cup in May, another race held in Western Victoria.
Zambora Brockie ($1.90) made it back-to-back country cups when taking out the $67,000 2016 Group 2 Horsham Cup on June 12.
Zambora Brockie is now one country cup win away from claiming a $50,000 bonus for winning three Victorian country cups in a calendar year.
It was win number 20 from just 33 starts for the Anthony Azzopardi-trained greyhound, who clocked the slick time of 26.719sec, with the $47,000 first prize taking his career earnings up to $237,000.
Horsham Cup day started brilliantly on a local front, with two of the first three races won by local trainers.
The son of Nitro Burst and Flying Liddy won by five lengths from Blazin’ Bomber (Darren Pattinson), with Zipping Chubbz (James Ennis) third.

“I’ve had a lot of good greyhounds over the years, but I’m not sure any of them could run such a brilliant time twice in the space of five days. It shows what a determined chaser he is.”
“He equalled the time he ran in his heat which speaks volumes about his professionalism and his recuperative powers,” said Azzopardi, who moved from NSW to Myrniong in Victoria late last year.
The club hosted three other feature finals on the day, collectively boasting almost $30,000 in prize money. Mark’s Boy (Sandra Galea) won the $10,710 GRV Vic Bred Maiden Final (410m), Shared Bonus (Jeff Britton) won the $10,000 Sylvia Penny Memorial (410m) and Cutting Edge (Geoff Collins) took out the $8,000 Wimmera Distance Championship (570m). Traralgon Cup Locals go ‘giddy-up’ as former jockey Gavin Burke trains first group winner! By Molly Haines & Andrew Copley Hazelwood North hobby greyhound trainer and former jockey Gavin Burke won his first group race when taking out the $67,000 2016 Group 2 Topcat Video Traralgon Cup (525m) with Pantera Nera on June 17. Burke, a regular at Traralgon, was ecstatic as Pantera Nera led all the way at the huge odds of $14.00, keeping the fastfinishing Demon Bale and Eren Bale (both trained by Blake Shillington) at bay.
“It is the first time I have had a runner in a group race and I was so nervous when I was standing behind the boxes before the race,” said Burke, who took a redundancy package last week from his full-time position as a Sales Representative. “It was great competition tonight and I couldn’t be happier because we paid quite bit of money for Pantera Nera, but it’s been worth it. We’re a small kennel with only seven dogs so this is very satisfying.” Pantera Nera notched his 13th win from 28 starts after clocking the time of 30.189sec. Bred in NSW by Norm Becroft, Pantera Nera is a November 2013 son of Milldean Panther and Go Jessie’s Girl. Above: Winning trainer Gavin Burke with Pantera Nera

Qualifying Trials Revamp Qualifying Trial meetings for Victorian greyhound racing recommenced in June 2016 under a revamped format that sees them conducted under full race conditions. Following consultation with key members within the greyhound racing industry, Greyhound Racing Victoria is committing more resources to all Qualifying Trial meetings in Victoria, with GRV Stewards controlling the meetings along with a full complement of club staff. “These changes are being made given the results of these events qualify greyhounds to compete in full stake race meetings,” said Stuart Laing, General Manager of Racing, Wagering & Business Development at Greyhound Racing Victoria. “This decision is no way a reflection on the performance or the integrity of club committees, management or staff, who have done a very good job in conducting Qualifying Trials over a long period of time.” GRV’s Racing Operations Team is monitoring the demand for Qualifying Trial Meetings and programming them accordingly. Qualifying trial meetings are listed in the racing calendar in GRV FastTrack - fastrack.grv.org.au Qualifying Trial Meetings – Key Information (effective 1 June, 2016) • All greyhounds will be required to undergo the full kennelling procedure. A regular look back at the history and heritage of greyhound racing Kangaroo Dogs When HMS Endeavour sailed into Botany Bay on 29 April 1770, it carried 86 people and two dogs owned by the leader of the expedition’s natural scientists, Joseph Banks. Some reports say the dogs were two greyhounds, others that they were a greyhound and spaniel. But we do know for certain that the first non-native dog to set paw on Australian soil was a greyhound called ‘Lady’. Over the next few days, Cook and other crew members spotted several large animals in the distance of “a light mouse colour and the full size of a greyhound” and then on 7 July 1770, Joseph Banks wrote in his journal that: “We walkd many miles over the flats and saw 4 of the animals, 2 of which my greyhound fairly chas’d, but they beat him owing to the length and thickness of the grass which prevented him from running while they at every bound leapd over the tops of it. We observd much to our surprize that instead of Going upon all fours this animal went only upon two legs, making vast bounds”. Over the next few months, as the Endeavour sailed up Australia’s east coast, there were more encounters between greyhound and kangaroo with several caught and eaten by the ship’s crew. Banks was not impressed by the taste of the big bounding animals but Cook thought it as good as roast beef. The greyhounds left with the Endeavour but Governor Phillip brought more with the First Fleet which were selectively crossed with other breeds such as Scottish Deerhounds to create large, strong hunting hounds called Kangaroo Dogs that helped keep the fledging colony supplied with fresh meat and protected livestock against dingoes. However the dog population starting getting out of control over the next few years and in 1801 Governor Philip King ordered that nuisance dogs were to be destroyed and started taxing all “cur” dogs. The only dogs exempt from this tax were terriers and, of course, greyhounds. Today, nearly 250 years later, greyhounds are a breed very much at home in Australia and still the only dogs able to keep up with a kangaroo in full bound.

Sandown Cup Alarm Bells Ring after massive upset! By Molly Haines & Andrew Copley Rank outsider Bells Are Ringin stunned punters by winning the world’s richest staying race for greyhounds, the $250,000 2016 Group 1 RSN Sandown Cup (715m). Leading virtually all the way from box 5, the Gerard O’Keeffetrained Bells Are Ringin paid $38.80. “How could this not be a highlight, winning the world’s richest staying race?” emotional trainer O’Keeffe said after the win. “I didn’t back her, but it turns out I didn’t have to, because I just won $175,000!” Bells Are Ringin held her nerve despite pressure throughout from runner-up Who Dey (Jason Thompson), with Zipping Kane (Carolyn Jones) winding up in third place. The Sandown Cup concluded Sandown Park’s May Racing Carnival, during which all three Group 1s were taken out by hobby trainers – Steve Creighton (Narralee – Sapphire Crown), Geoff Scott-Smith (Dundee Osprey – Harrison-Dawson & Gerard 14 O’Keefe (Bells Are Ringin – Sandown Cup).

Celebrating Women on Track The Healesville Greyhound Racing Club will celebrate females within the industry with a Women On Track event next month. The regional racing club, in conjunction with Greyhound Racing Victoria, will host the event on Sunday 17 July. Held in honour of female participation in the sport, guests on the day will be able to enjoy top quality racing, while soaking up the picturesque views of the Yarra Valley.
Investigations Unit Monthly Report
The event, which will be pink-themed, will include a high tea as well as giveaways. Guests will enjoy a glass of champagne on arrival as well as preevent interviews with women within the sport, and watch as the winning dog’s rug up in pink. The event is invitation only, so ladies keep a close eye on your mailboxes.
Charlie Bezzina Senior Investigations Manager The Investigations Unit continues to gain momentum with further increases in staff. A racing steward has recently been appointed and brings much skill and knowledge to the unit. There will be another two investigators appointed along with a Strategic Analyst, which will give the Investigations Unit its full complement of a Senior Investigations Manager, two Investigation Managers, four Investigators, Manager Intelligence and two Analysts.
‘You Can’t Cut Corners with Greyhound Pups’
The unit continues to receive information from the public and participants, generating in excess of 100 investigations, some of which have been converted into briefs of evidence and charges being laid, and this number continues to grow. Recently a large scale joint kennel inspection led by Welfare and assisted by investigators was conducted which identified shortfalls at the kennels - these types of audits will feature more prominently as risks are identified.
Angela Langton insists that taking short cuts with greyhound pups is a recipe for disaster.
As well, pro-active investigations will increase over time as intelligence identifies risks, which will spur our Unit into action.
“You’ve got to learn and listen to what people say…and listen to the right people.”
We’re also now focusing on disqualified persons returning to the sport, who will now undergo more scrutiny by investigators prior to consideration by the Integrity Council and The Board for a decision on whether they’ll be allowed to return - the days of returning to the sport unchallenged have dramatically changed.
“Rearing is probably 95 per cent of whether your dog is going to make it to the track or not.”
The Investigations Unit through the Tactical Plan has currently identified 13 high-risk areas for GRV to focus on, ranging from live baiting to race fixing, and each area will be periodically targeted for attention through the year. I am pleased to hear that some participants are in fact policing the sport themselves by making approaches to those who bring the sport into disrepute. I will always say that the best outcomes are the result of the quality of the information we receive, and I’m keen to build partnerships with those participants who are as keen as I am to help ensure the integrity 16 of greyhound racing and therefore the future of the sport.
“You just can’t cut corners when it comes to dogs,” the breeder/ trainer from Anakie said at GRV’s recent Stakeholder Engagement Workshop at Geelong. Angela was part of a panel that focussed on ‘Breeding & Breeding Controls’.
“Greyhounds need to be fed really well, they need to be kept fleafree and worm-free”. “They’re not a cheap animal to have. It costs a lot of money to rear a dog (properly). You’ve got to give them the best you can. They need plenty of exercise, sunshine, good feeding and handling… it’s all part of it,” she said. GRV’s series of Stakeholder Engagement Workshops are to identify core issues surrounding nine key topics, discussed across 11 workshops throughout the state until 6 August, 2016. All workshops are being conducted by an independent facilitator, to collect information to assist GRV in making informed, strategic decisions about the future of greyhound racing in Victoria, particularly in relation to the welfare of the greyhound throughout its entire lifecycle.
JULY 2016
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Nutritional Supplements Trainers are advised some seaweed-based nutritional supplements have been tested by controlling bodies and found to have high concentrations of arsenic and should not be fed close to racing. It is ultimately the responsibility of participants to carefully consider the use of any and all food and additives to make sure that all greyhounds are presented for racing free of any prohibited substance.
Eating Right to Race Right
substances containing chocolate, liquids containing caffeine from tea or coffee, and products from health food shops.
The need for the right diet that keeps greyhounds healthy and in top racing condition is well understood by participants. However special care still needs to be taken in the days leading up to a race to make sure dogs aren’t accidently fed anything that may generate a positive drug swab. In particular, knackery meat may contain various prohibited substances, such as procaine. This can happen when livestock such as cows, horses or pigs are treated with procaine penicillin shortly before they die. Other foods that can return positive results include bread with poppy seeds,
So to reduce the chance of a positive swab that could lead to loss of prize money and other penalties, it’s worth keeping a careful eye on a dog’s diet. Consider using ‘clean’ meat such as chicken, kangaroo and human consumption meat or a commercial complete dry food instead of knackery meat, at least for the 48 hours leading up to their race and help make sure your dog is eating right to race right. If you’re in doubt about your dog’s pre-race diet and need to know more, contact GRV Stewards on 03 8329 1100 Communication will be instant and our members will get a better understanding of the time and effort we put in on your behalf. We welcome involvement from as many participants as possible, the more ideas the better for changes that benefit the sport. We are looking for someone to assist our member co-ordinator. This would be a part-time paid position for a web-savvy person with industry knowledge. If you feel you can assist us in this area, please email us at gotbav@ gmail.com Through this new app we are going to have advertisements for the sale of greyhounds, information on stud dogs and all types of greyhound related products.
GOTBA News Sandra Reed - President, GOTBA Victoria (pictured). I have been able to attend some of the recent Greyhound Racing Victoria workshops and have been heartened by the enthusiasm and dedication shown from those in attendance. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those involved for wanting to make a difference to the way in which we operate as a sport, and for being prepared to make changes to ensure our future success. The GOTBA committee is always seeking ways to keep our members informed about what we are doing on their behalf and also obtain feedback about their concerns so that we truly represent their interests. However, as volunteers with other commitments and a lack of funds, this has been difficult. This month we have been able to employ a person who will now fill the gap by sending out regular newsletters and keeping the website up-to-date. They will also be developing a site that you will be able to access through an app on your smartphone.
The committee feels that these new ways of keeping members informed will allow participants to realise the value of the GOTBA and appreciate the effort that we make to support them and their greyhounds. The code of practice is due to be released in October-November for public comment and feedback from industry participants is vital. If you feel that any part of the code is unworkable then you need to take the opportunity to express your concerns. It will be our last chance to suggest changes to the code before it becomes law. For the first time our national body is presenting recommendations to Greyhounds Australasia and we are looking forward to establishing a permanent relationship where our views will be considered before decisions, which affect us, are finalised. We recently elected a new committee member Lynton Hogan, who is a solicitor and barrister and has been assisting us for some time on legal matters. He will be a great asset to our organisation. A strong GOTBA gives us credibility when approaching regulators, politicians and media. Please join us, so we have strength in numbers. Club Development & Member Services Monthly Report Craig Armstead - General Manager Club Development & Member Services Consistent with GRV’s focus on increasing industry engagement and communication we have been continuing to work closely with Club staff and Committee members with a number of formal and informal meetings held during May and June. We have also been engaging with greyhound racing members and Clubs through the Stakeholder Engagement Workshops. The feedback from the workshops has been very positive and I strongly encourage all to attend, as they provide us with valuable information and input on future developments. Welcome to Craig Monigatti, who started as the new Warrnambool Club Manager at the end of May. He brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent 14 years working in the AFL Industry for the Carlton Football Club in administration, operations, analysis and technology roles. He also has a bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement) and is completing Masters of Business (Sport Management) at Deakin University. Craig grew up in Warrnambool and only left it to attend University. He’s returning to Warrnambool for both the opportunity to run the WGRC and to give his family – his wife and 3-year-old daughter – the chance to enjoy a country lifestyle. Craig says he’s looking forward to becoming involved in the local community and contributing wherever he can. “Having only been involved at the Club for a few weeks, I am learning a great deal. What I do know is that everyone has been very welcoming thus far and that the fabric of the Club should hold it in good stead heading into the future. We are open for racing on Thursday night and provide both bistro and bar facilities. We also have large function rooms available for hire”. GRV welcomes Craig and looks forward to working with him.

Sale GRC News By Des Dooley Sprinters to Shine at Sale July is Sprinters Month at Sale with the fastest greyhounds tackling 2 features. The Sale Track star Challenge on July 10th carries $6,000 in stakes and is restricted to the best performed greyhounds at Sale from January to June 2016. Leading contenders with 2 meetings to go are Sonny’s Salute, Sandy Monelli, Bourbon An Khan, Dash of Scotch, Tiger Rance, Aston Sloan and Jesaulenko. This race will provide a great lead-in to the Brentcorp Sprint Championship Final to be held on Sunday 24th July. The final carries stake money of $14,200 and is invariably won by a quality provincial sprinter. Heats are run on the Sunday prior. The Achievers The 20-year-old Trackman & Lure Driver, Tom Jolley is certainly a multi-talented youngster. Greyhound participants are familiar with his lure driving and track preparation abilities, but put him on top of a horse and you see another side to Tom. Still riding track work at Sale Turf Club before commencing his duties at Sale Greyhounds, Tom excels in another horse pursuit, Polocrosse. So much so that he is touring South Africa in June and July as part of the Australian ‘Under 21 Polocrosse’ representative team. Congratulations, Tom! Dermot Prout is another young achiever. Part of the landscape at Sale since a very early age, Dermot trains a small team of greyhounds including prolific winner Sandy Monelli. Regarded by many as a short course sprinter, Sandy Monelli, had never been tested over further than 440 metres. Not one to take a backward step and look for the soft options, Dermot selected Sandown on a Thursday night to find out if Sandy Monelli could run out the 515 metres. Leading all the way, Sandy Monelli gave the young 22-year-old trainer his first city winner with his first runner. In June the staff of the Sale Greyhound Racing Club, led by Lyn McMahon, signed up with the Cancer Council Australia to fundraise for cancer research. Culminating on the 5th June with the Sunday race meeting and despite incessant rain on the night, staff raised $5,850, which was donated to the Cancer Council. Another great effort by Lyn and her fellow community-minded staff.

Q & A with Sale GRC Manager Des Dooley Tell us a bit about yourself? I am 64 years of age and was born in Williamstown, before my family moved to Maffra when I was 3 years old. I am married to Diane with a 40th Wedding Anniversary coming up in March 2017. We have 3 sons Mark, Luke and Brendan. Also 2 delightful little granddaughters Bella who is 22 months and Piper who is 14 months. What are your hobbies? I am not sure about hobbies, but I have always had greyhounds in some capacity, whether owning, training or breeding them. My wife commented earlier this year that it was the first time she could remember me not having a greyhound in work. Within weeks I bought a promising young dog from Geoff Scott-Smith called Dundee Ally and she is the only dog I have in work. I do have 5 away at the breakers, 7 seven month old pups and 3 brood females at home. I have in recent years taken time off to travel overseas to Europe on 2 occasions. I found this very enjoyable and enlightening. I did enjoy seeing greyhound racing and horse racing in England and Ireland and spending time with breeders and trainers. Just the nature of greyhound participation leaves little time for permanent hobbies. Are you more of a country person or a city person at heart and why? I am a passionate country person, although more comfortable in the city now as a result of 2 sons living in Melbourne. I have lived the last 40 years of my life on acreage and only health reasons will change that. What is your employment background? After leaving St Patricks College Sale after year 12, I commenced work with the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Ltd which later merged with the National Bank. After about 18 months I was offered a job at Gippsland Consolidated Milk and through amalgamations went to Gippsland Amalgamated Milk and then subsequently Murray Goulburn. In 1976 I took out a Bookmakers licence which I held for 27 years. I was a full time Bookmaker from 1977 to commencing as Racing Manager at Sale in 1997. What was behind your decision to work in the greyhound racing industry? I had always been urged by my Bookmaking peers to become involved in Administration and subsequently served on the Victorian Bookmakers Greyhound and Country Racing Sub Committees and later had 8 years on the Committee of Traralgon Greyhound Club as Vice President to the late Barry Longmore. The halcyon days of greyhound racing (and Country gallops) were fading in the late 80’s and early 90’s and I was faced with the decision of relocating to Melbourne to make a book full time or stay put and “tough it out“. Being a country person I naturally chose the latter. On-course turnovers continued to plummet and when the Sale position came up it was too good an opportunity to let slip. The Sale Committee at the time probably took a risk employing somebody who had been out of the workforce for 20 years! I regard myself as fortunate being paid to do something I love.
What was your involvement in greyhounds or greyhound racing prior to taking up the role of Manager at Sale GRC? I bought my first greyhound pup when I was 20 and bred my first litter when I was 22. I was given a female called “The Teacher “ which I had mated with import Newmore King, but produced nothing of note. However I then bought a Top Bomber female (Bianco Rose) from Tony Duke kennels in NSW and she won in the city and was the Grand Dam of Cranbourne Track record holder Denison Miss. Denison Miss was runner up to Sarah Kuda in the 1981 Sandown Laurels. Despite training a number of top graders such as Franklin Deano, Secret Agent, Franklin Gold, Paragon Patch, Another Deano and more recently Perfect Tess I am still waiting to bring up a group victory. Like most participants that is what keeps us involved. I love the breeding side of the industry and the challenge of being competitive when racing in the City. When does Sale generally race? Sale races on Sundays and is one of the few Clubs that has always raced on weekends. We were the first Club to race on a Sunday and the first Club to race twilight. What is it like managing a big event like the Sale Cup? It is always a stressful time because you want everything to go right. As the Cup has grown so has our reliance on everyone working as a team. I am fortunate at Sale to have great support and who are as passionate as I am about making Cup Night a success. What are the future plans for the Sale GRC? As most in the Industry now know the Club has purchased 43 acres of land adjacent to our present site. The Sale Committee and Management will be working with GRV and the Wellington Shire to put in place a full development plan for the new site. This process will commence after the current round of workshops are completed and all the information has been digested. 19

Larissa Darragh - GAP Manager All greyhounds adopted from GAP are de-sexed, vaccinated, micro-chipped, wormed, and health checked. During the foster process they quickly and easily make the transition from being a racing animal to pet. Such is the stringent nature of the GAP assessment processes that the Victorian government legislates that greyhounds successfully passing through GAP no longer have to be muzzled in public. To enter a greyhound in for a GAP pre-entry assessment, owners and trainers must ring GAP on 5799 0166 to book their greyhounds a place. Each individual will have the opportunity to book up to three greyhounds per session. It is advised that owners and trainers ensure they are aware of the times, dates and locations that bookings are being taken, as spots are limited per session. Please refer to schedule.

JULY 2016
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Upcoming Geelong Adoption Day by Molly Haines The next Adoption Day for the Greyhound Adoption Program is fast approaching, set for Sunday 10th July 2016 – at Geelong Greyhound Racing Club, Beckley Park. This isn’t just a day to adopt greyhounds. If people are thinking about adopting and want to find out more information, this is a great opportunity as staff from the Greyhound Adoption Program will be on hand to answer any of your questions while you meet and interact with some of our placid, friendly greyhounds. “This is the first time we’ve taken the successful Adoption Day event to a regional area like Geelong. We want everyone to meet these wonderful animals and we thought the Geelong area was a great place to start doing this because it’s one of our most popular places for greyhounds” said GRV CEO, Alan Clayton. “The metro Adoption Days have been so successful and we don’t want to stop there! These events are great for people to have their first encounter with the breed, and I highly recommend attending the event even if you’re not quite ready to adopt”, he said. Log onto to gap.grv.org.au for more information on the upcoming adoption day.
@gap_vic Follow GAP on Instagram THE Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) has expanded its social media presence with the creation of an Instagram page! Already at more than 200 followers, the page was created at the beginning of June to further promote the work of GAP. The adoption program is a Greyhound Racing Victoria initiative designed to help greyhounds find homes once they’re no longer suited to racing. The page includes photos of dogs up for adoption, as well as ones of those which have successfully been re-homed. You can also stay up to date with upcoming events, such as adoption days, by following the Instagram page.
‘Every Greyhound Has a Story’ video series The Greyhound Adoption Program has released a video series emanating from its ‘Every Greyhound Has a Story’ photographic exhibition, which was showcased in a number of galleries around Victoria in 2014. Stories include... FRED BASSET: Comedy duo Hamish Blake & Andy Lee captured the imagination of fans when their greyhound, Fred Basset, drew record crowds to racetracks all over Australia before being adopted by the Copley family in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. JORDAN & MONTY: When a greyhound named Monty was adopted into a Ballarat home in 2009, it changed the lives of his new owners, particularly Jordan, who was just nine years old at the time. KERRY, JOLANDA & MOUSE: Mouse is one of a growing number of greyhounds to have adapted to an apartment lifestyle. She is renowned for visiting local canine-friendly eateries and cafes throughout Melbourne with her proud owners Jolanda and Kerry Oosthuizen-Walker. AGED CARE: Greyhounds are quiet, friendly and cooperative creatures who bring smiles to the faces of countless Victorians in aged care facilities, many of whom are missing the interaction they once had with their own pet. DERARCA, CENA & GEORDIE: Fostering a former racing greyhound named Cena to help prepare him for life as a household pet proved a life-changing moment for Derarca O’Mahony of Malvern East. WESTERFOLDS PARK: There is no better experience for potential adopters than interaction with the dogs themselves, and that’s what makes regular greyhound walks such as the one at Westerfolds Park in Melbourne’s east so worthwhile. More videos from this captivating series will be coming soon. See them all at gap.grv.org.au 29
