COVER: Andrea Dailly with Faithy Bale, one of her three successful heat winners at Warrnambool.

I am very pleased to report that greyhound racing continues to perform strongly in Victoria and that we have been able to maintain, and even add to, our regular racing calendar, which is indeed a privilege for which we should all be collectively grateful. This is because of the outstanding work of the stewards; the 13 clubs and all the race day staff under very difficult circumstances and we owe them a very big thanks and all our co-operation. It is also because of the outstanding way our participants are following the protocols designed to provide a safe and healthy working environment. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to keep our sport going. As you would be aware, we need to keep following the stringent protocols we have put in place so it is important to regularly check GRV’s Covid-19 Protocols Page at grv.org.au/ covid-19 for updates, including most recently the requirement for trainers to provide their own high-vis clothing for arm trials and new procedures for interstate greyhound transfers to Victoria. Meantime, we have announced our racing program and associated prize money for the next three months. One exciting new addition is that Clubs will also be hosting Saturday morning race meetings again, starting with Ballarat on May 9 and 16, followed by Shepparton on 23 May. It is critical to note that the only change to our prize money program is around feature races which represents a very small percentage (less than one per cent) of the prize money in our overall racing program. This decision is interim, and as we continue to race, this will be reviewed. It is important to us all that feature racing continues at our tracks and we have a strong racing program where our best dogs can compete. In this climate, where so much is no longer available in the sport arena, it also gives punters, participants and members of the general community a form of entertainment to enjoy and look forward to.

Also covered in this issue is information about canine gastroenteritis, as cases continue to be reported in Victoria and infected dogs do have an impact on racing and GAP operations. Speaking of GAP, I remind everyone that it is still taking in new dogs from participants and fostering and adopting them out. There have been some changes to intake procedures and again you can find out more in this issue.

The coverage will include stories, podcast, heats, box draw and wagering updates, previews of trainers and dogs and Zoom interviews with competing trainers, Warrnambool’s Manager and others involved in the Cup. Presenters will include James Van de Maat, George Farrugia, GRV Racing Ambassador and AFL champion, Brent Harvey, and GRV’s own Molly Haines who will also host the online Molly’s Lounge, talking with trainers and others. There will also be live SEN updates and GRV coverage hosted by SKY, RSN and TAB. This will be the largest social media campaign ever for a country Cup delivered by GRV in partnership with the club. The combination of Covid-19, canine gastroenteritis, the bushfires and a shortfall in racing fields late last year has affected GRV’s finances. However, we remain committed to returning as much revenue as possible to participants. This does mean though that we have had to defer some major IT upgrades and other projects. Our intention is to review these decisions towards the end of 2020 and I will keep you informed about this. A reminder too that GRV is still open for business but that participants should contact us online or by phone rather than visiting the Chetwynd St office in West Melbourne. Finally, I thank all of you for your patience and understanding as we work through these trying times. It’s now more important than ever that we watch out for each other, and especially for older participants who are not finding it easy at the moment. So, take care, stay safe and keep racing.

Alan Clayton Chief Executive Officer Greyhound Racing Victoria

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA MAY 2020

In addition to maintaining feature racing, albeit with slightly reduced prize money, GRV has changed up the program and introduced ‘Best 8’ special events at both The Meadows and Sandown carrying $15,000 in prize money over the next two months. These special events will provide extra opportunities for our top-class greyhounds to compete for increased prizemoney on a regular basis. These best 8 races will be run over a variety of distances including longer distances at both metro tracks opening up more opportunities for stayers. You can find out more about these changes in this edition of the Monthly.

GRV has really stepped up its online coverage of major meetings and as things return to normal, we will continue to improve how we present racing action to those watching at home. For example, the TAB Warrnambool Cup on 6 May, will be showcased in detail through the GRV website, Facebook page, twitter feed and the recently expanded Watchdog app.

Dailly chases fourth Warrnambool Cup BY PETER QUILTY

Victoria’s leading trainer, Andrea Dailly, stole the limelight in the Group 2 TAB Warrnambool Cup heats (450m) on 30 April. As the heavens opened up, it was day of sensations where the hot pots were beaten and not one favourite took out a heat! Dailly lines up with half the field in next Wednesday night’s final and will be chasing back-to-back Warrnambool Cup victories. She scored with champion Dyna Patty last year. And Dailly is aiming for her fourth Warrnambool Cup, having also won with Sun Hero (2005) and Dyna Bert (2012). She will rug heat winners Leon Bale, Aston Cade and Faithy Bale, along with Jax Bale (one of the two fastest second place-getters), in the $31,500-to-the-winner final. It was also a successful day for Jason Thompson, who had two heat winners – Razor Sharp and Zambora Smokey – the latter defeating the highly-fancied Simon Told Helen in the fastest time of the day (25.08sec) to record his seventh straight win.

GRV will donate $250 to the Police Legacy Remembrance Fund every time a greyhound wins a race from box four (blue) at The Meadows and Sandown during the month of May. The money raised will be donated to this fund which has been specifically created for the families of the four fallen police officers who lost their lives in a tragic crash on 22 April. GRV, and the 13 clubs which come under the banner of Greyhound Clubs Victoria, have a strong and proud history of banding together to help those in need.

LATEST NEWS

Greyhound racing family supports the blue dog for four fallen police officers “Policing is a difficult job and comes with risks but to lose four officers in one incident makes this a particularly difficult time,” Mr Dunne said. “We are reaching out to the family and offering our support and the Blue Dog initiative is our way of showing our love and respect for all officers doing their jobs to keep us safe.” Participants and greyhound followers can make donations to the fund by accessing the link to the Fund via policelegacyvic.org.au

From January to March, GRV raised funds through the Go the Red Dog campaign for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. GRV Board Member Emmett Dunne, a serving police officer for almost 40 years, said police officers were doing it tough right now and the Blue Dog initiative was a great way of showing our support.

GENERAL ENQUIRIES

A trainer’s advice on canine gastro Australian greyhound racing has this year experienced one of the most contagious strains of canine gastroenteritis in memory.

When did the virus hit your kennel?

The virus has spread across much of the country, leading to race meetings being cancelled and the postponement of the Group 2 Horsham Cup.

Our first encounter was around four weeks ago. We had a dog who was flat within himself. A blood test at the vets the next day confirmed a virus that required antibiotics and rest.

Experienced trainer Matthew Clark and wife Bianca live on seven acres in the Gippsland town of Briagolong, and their property is one of many kennels to have been affected.

At that point I never considered it to be the canine gastroenteritis until the dog in the kennel next to him became lethargic and vomited the next day. We isolated both dogs straight away and then had to isolate another two over the next three days. This left me with four dogs in my race kennels.

Since their property was struck by the virus in mid-March, Clark has since been approached by a number of trainers encountering the problem. And he has been more than happy to offer some advice. “I think it’s important that trainers talk about how they deal with this virus because if it is managed correctly you are potentially only talking about two weeks of downtime,” Clark said. “Because it is so contagious it’s paramount that people recognise the signs early to limit the spread. I was fortunate to get some advice from a fellow trainer who was dealing with it at the same time as me.” Clark believes it is reasonable to expect most dogs will end up with the virus and that it’s not helping to play the ‘blame game’ when it comes to spreading the virus. “We just have to deal with it and make sure our dogs are cared for.”

8

Once you isolated the affected greyhounds, did you continue to race your dogs that weren’t affected by the virus? We had dealt with the cancellation of the Launching Pad (Matthew trains Catch The Thief and Playlist, who were considered two of the main contenders for the 2020 Launching Pad series) around the same time the canine gastro showed up in a couple of our dogs. By isolating our sick dogs, I managed to continue to prepare our remaining four race dogs. Catch The Thief won at Sandown in best of the night time and we had another winner at Warragul, but not long after that, Playlist began to show signs of the gastro and it was at this point we decided to scratch him from The Meadows, as well as the dogs we

What symptoms did your dogs show and how long did the symptoms last? The symptoms I found from the virus included going off their food and vomiting up what they had eaten, becoming lethargic and flat (generally not wanting to get off their beds) and some instances of diarrhea. The advice from my vet and other trainers were that rest was the only cure. My vet advised that the virus was highly contagious through the animals’ faeces. We are fortunate here that each of our race dogs has its own emptying yard, which helped to avoid contamination and spread of any virus. I believe this was an important factor in getting over the virus in the most efficient manner. We made sure that the yards were picked up after each let out and the kennels were also hosed out each day and disinfected. Additionally, each time the dogs were let out, their kennel was mopped with disinfected, whether they were dirty or not.

Did you change what you fed? We restricted our dogs to premium kibble for the duration of the virus which was generally around three days.

How have you transitioned your greyhounds back into work and normal diet following the virus?

After three to four days we began to put the dogs out in the galloping paddock which allowed them to exercise as much or as little as they liked. Each dog was different in its return to full work. Some were able to be trialled seven days after getting it but most required 10 days. All varied in how long it took to return to their normal times. Some easily got over it and others clearly will need a few more runs before they are back to normal.

LATEST NEWS

had entered for Sale the next day, to allow the virus to take its course.

Overall, we found that all of our dogs lost weight during the virus but no more than a kilogram.

Did all of your greyhounds end up with the virus? No, we had two greyhounds who didn’t end up with the virus. One bitch had almost completed a season and I think her immune system was strong enough to fight it off. She did go off her food but didn’t vomit or have diarrhea. Another was a young dog that had only had a couple of starts. He was spelling due to injury at the time the virus came through the kennel.

What advice would you give trainers with regards to this virus? In my opinion, it’s important that trainers recognise the symptoms early to avoid taking sick dogs to the track. The virus is highly contagious and seeing how quickly it took hold of our kennel, I can easily see how it could spread through the industry.

After three to four days we were able to start to put dogs back on their conventional diet without the additives and after seven days their diets returned to normal.

For the first time ever, GRV and Harness Racing Victoria will host Saturday morning trots and dogs meetings from May 9. Victorian harness and greyhound meetings will feature on Saturday mornings for an initial three-week period from May 9-23. Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) CEO Dayle Brown and Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) CEO Alan Clayton issued a joint statement to announce the news. “Saturday morning racing presents an important strategic opportunity for our racing codes. The additional race meetings will provide extra earning potential for our hardworking participants and enable our products to reach

new audiences during a period when people are hungry for sporting entertainment. We thank our Victorian Racing Industry (VRI) partners and Tabcorp for backing this initiative and welcome the initial three-week arrangement. Each of these meetings will be thoroughly reviewed from a wagering, broadcast and brand perspective. This will help guide our future strategy regarding Saturday morning racing. We are also pleased to be working so collaboratively on this project.” Tabcorp Park Melton will host the three Saturday morning trots meetings, while the greyhound meetings will be held at Ballarat on May 9 and 16, and at Shepparton on May 23.

Dog food initiative a major success Greyhound Clubs Victoria and Greyhound Racing Victoria were overwhelmed by the response from greyhound trainers in purchasing the heavily subsidised dog food at various regional race clubs. Almost 1000 bags were sold at greyhound clubs in Bendigo, Warragul and Warrnambool and, despite COVID-19 restrictions presenting a few practical challenges, the promotion was a resounding success. Importantly, clubs were also able to ensure that social distancing measures were adhered to throughout the purchasing process. Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association was one of the selected locations, where Club Manager Troy Harley said “Allowing the trainers to purchase much needed dog food at a significantly reduced rate was fantastic, and it cements the need for GCV to continue to work with the needs of the participants in partnership with GRV.”

10

GCV Chairman Adrian Scott added that “The response has been extremely positive, and it is clearly evident that GCV is heading in the right direction. Our aim is to increase communication with the 13 Victorian greyhound clubs and GRV to increase participation, support animal welfare and promote a thriving industry for many years to come.” GRV CEO Alan Clayton said he was delighted with the initiative. “To have ordered an additional stock of dog food, which doesn’t impact current supply levels, and at a time where some trainers are finding food difficult to source, is really important for the health and wellbeing of our greyhounds.” GRV and GCV have been extremely proactive in educating our industry in relation to COVID-19 rules and regulations as the industry continues to race. We as an industry are adhering to social distancing protocols advised by the Victorian Government and the Chief Health Officer and are proud of what the industry has been able to achieve.

BY PHIL WEIR

So right now many of us are coping with the kids at home. Suddenly you’re the patent, teacher, everything. How many could you handle? Imagine having 15 of the little tykes running around. Spare a thought for Tracey Salter and her bitch Eminence (known at home as Tiggy), who has just graced the world with a litter that may very well be a record: 15 pups – seven girls and eight boys – and all survived. Tracey’s not holding back with her excitement. “People keep telling me it’s a record!” “It was a really difficult process. The vet’s amazed Tiggy made it through. She had kidney failure as well, and spent five days in ICU, but she’s home now. She’s lost a lot of weight, but she’s on the mend.” “She’s not strong enough to look after her babies. It’s a shame, because she’s really starting to look for them. They’re with a lady who has two dogs and they’re rearing and feeding them. I’m really lucky in that sense.” The pups are being looked after by an unlikely pair. The two dogs taking over duties are Penny (raced as Thriller Love) who provides the feed for the litter (and seven pups of her own!), while other duties are taken on by Ally, a Scottish Terrier. “This is a terrier who’s never had pups, but she treats them like her own. It’s just incredible.”

Did 15 come as a surprise? Did it ever. “Nobody knew. There was just no inkling at all that there was 15. She looked like she was having about eight. The only thing I noticed was that Tiggy was very quiet through this pregnancy. She didn’t want to run around or anything, and she wouldn’t eat anything raw, was the other strange thing.”

LATEST NEWS

Now THAT’S a litter…

“All the pups survived – and they’re massive! They’re only a week and half old, and they can cross the lounge room before they can blink. They’re thriving.” Tracey, based at Crowlands near Ararat, been rather prolific in her breeding efforts. “I’ve sent myself insane, but I’ve had 8 litters in two years! I’ve got pups everywhere.” “I don’t breed my bitches ever year, only when I need race dogs. I’m very big on nutrition, way before I implant a bitch. It starts long before that. If you try to catch up when the bitch is inseminated, you’re way behind the eight-ball.” “We don’t breed willy-nilly; we plan a breeding. Make sure the bitch has had a lifetime of good health, clean racing, and very lightly raced. I’ve always said you need to have your bitches as good as, if not better, than race dogs before you mate them, or how can they give it to the pups?” Judging by the amount of TLC at all stages of this litter, these kids have the best start in life, even though they didn’t get the memo about gathering in crowds…

Just when the story can’t get stranger, surrogate mum Penny is also a half-sister to the litter’s sire, Moriera.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT

BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.

Greyhound gastroenteritis outbreak continuing…

Greyhound Welfare during COVID-19

Canine gastroenteritis is still being confirmed on a number of properties in Victoria. In addition, GAP continues to receive infected greyhounds which unfortunately is having a significant negative impact on GAP operations, slowing of movement through the program and resulting in growing waiting lists for dogs to come into GAP. Every time GAP receives an affected greyhound, the entire kennel block and all the dogs living in it are unable to be moved or processed for at least 3 weeks.

Over the recent months, participants have had to deal with disease threats against both humans and their greyhounds. We have all seen a lot of information about keeping humans healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic; but what about our greyhounds?

Further, the continued presentation of infected greyhounds at race meetings, is preventing the disease from being eradicated in the Victorian greyhound racing community. This is resulting in large numbers of scratchings every week. Continued disease outbreaks and high numbers of scratchings will impact on the ability to continue running full race fields, particularly in light of the current COVID-19 environment. It is very important to report infected dogs to GRV and immediately close the kennels for a minimum of 10 days AFTER the LAST dog has stopped showing symptoms of the disease. Participants MUST scratch dogs who are infected AND dogs who have been in the same kennel block, day yard, toileting yard, trailer or any other environment with the sick dog, even those who were only in contact prior to the sick dog showing symptoms. Symptoms vary from dogs being mildly off their food and vomiting and/or diarrhoea for 1-4 days (but up to 10 days for some dogs), through to severe vomiting and diarrhoea that requires veterinary treatment. It can take up to 4 days for an infected dog to show symptoms (the ‘incubation period’) and they can continue to shed the disease for up to 10-14 days after they recover. Participants needing more information on this disease should contact their veterinarian or GRV on notify@grv.org.au.

14

Importantly, there is NO evidence that greyhounds or any other dogs can contract or pass on COVID-19. In fact, the reduction in movement and interaction between people reduces the risk of the spread of many diseases in general; both between humans, but also between animals as they are no longer moving as far or as frequently as they normally would do. Currently, greyhound racing is continuing albeit with some changes to management and processes. With the continuation of racing, GRV and its participants have a bigger responsibility to ensure we do not impact the management of COVID-19 or spread canine diseases. All participants need to re-visit their biosecurity and disinfection protocols; some basic principles of good biosecurity include: ■

do not move greyhounds between properties unless absolutely necessary;

avoid using public trial, galloping and slipping tracks; think of alternatives to exercise your greyhounds, preferably at home;

avoid sharing transport trailers/vehicles between properties and trainers;

restrict visitors to your property to only those absolutely necessary - you could for example send videos to owners rather than having them come and visit;

do not visit a track if you are unwell;

always wash your hands after handling other people’s greyhounds and upon returning to your property – ideally use soap and warm water for 20 seconds, or hand sanitiser;

place shallow buckets of Domestos or other hospital grade disinfectant at the entry to all kennelling/dog housing/training areas for visitors to dip their shoes in before walking in;

clean pens daily and disinfect at least once weekly, more often if any signs of disease - always return greyhounds to their own pen after exercise, training, toileting etc;

always disinfect pens, bedding, food and water bowls and toys/enrichment items when they are changed between greyhounds; this can be done in a dishwasher or washing machine (depending on item) set at 65°C or higher; and

always isolate dogs that are showing signs of diseases as soon as possible.

For those participants who kennel greyhounds at shared kennel facilities, you should consider working with the other trainers to develop a schedule to reduce the number of people on the property as much as possible. You could consider sharing cleaning and feeding duties, where one trainer cleans and feeds in the morning, then exercises their greyhounds; and the other trainer comes to the kennel facility in the afternoon to exercise, and then toilet, feed, and bed down the dogs in the evening.

Workshops All Workshops are currently on hold due to COVID-19.

GAP is continuing… Contrary to some media reports, GAP is still continuing to operate. We are still taking in new dogs from participants, fostering and adopting. While pre-entry assessments have been put on hold, and all dogs are being put on the waiting list, we are working through the waiting list as fast as we can when we have the capacity to take new dogs in. The

intake process is quite different though, in that we are simply accepting the dogs (under very controlled conditions to protect GAP staff from COVID-19) and assessing them in the day(s) following intake. GAP is working very hard to take in as many dogs as we can and ask everyone for patience as we work through the waiting list, noting that some of the delays have been due to ongoing issues with canine gastroenteritis. If you would like to book new dogs into GAP, please contact Racing Services as you have always done.

Re-homing Package now available

WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT

The Rehoming Package enables a GRV registered owner to comply with the requirements of The Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds (the Code), and to transfer the ownership of the greyhound on the GRV Microchip Registry to the new pet owner. The Rehoming Package contains two booklets: 1.

Re-homing Guide - Information for Participants

2. Pet Greyhound Post Adoption Care Guide (that must be provided to the new pet owner by the GRV registered owner upon rehoming) The Pet Greyhound Post Adoption Care Guide contains the Notice of Retirement as a Pet – Transfer to New Owner form and the Re-homing Statement. Completion of these forms, AND the provision of the Pet Greyhound Post Adoption Care Guide to new owners, will ensure compliance with all requirements in relation to rehoming under the Code. Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, entry into GAP is booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au. Please note that although standard pre-entry assessments are on hold until further notice due to COVID-19 restrictions, and all greyhounds with booked sessions moved back to the waiting list, GAP is still accepting greyhounds from participants. Greyhounds are being accepted into GAP without the pre-entry assessment under conditions designed to protect GAP staff from the risk of COVID-19. Participants will be contacted in the order that they were booked on the system when spaces become available. While GRV understands that the waiting time to get a greyhound into GAP has increased slightly, and participants currently do not have certainty about timeframes, GAP is working very hard to increase the number of greyhounds being accepted and reduce the waiting time. Pre-entry assessments will be re-introduced as soon as possible. GRV appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding. To be eligible for acceptance into GAP your greyhound must: ■

have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS* described on this page and given at least 10 days before entry; and

not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to entry (‘wind-down period’). More information is available through Member Services or at greyhoundcare.grv. org.au/retirement-from-racing.

Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. * Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. Please contact GRV if you would like more information.

The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently.

GRV asks participants to be aware that session dates and times are subject to change in hot weather. The GRV Hot Weather Policy is now being applied to GAP Pre-Entry Assessment dates. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.
