COVER: Cup winner Bronski Beat, flanked by Trainer Brendan Pursell and son Blake.
It has been another busy month on the track with highlights including the Warrnambool Cup and the Sandown May Carnival along with a full calendar of regular race meetings. We have been very privileged to keep our sport operating over the past few months and this is very much due to how the clubs, stewards and race day staff and participants have all worked to together to follow protocols while consistently and professionally delivering great racing. Now that some restrictions are starting to ease, noting that the State of Emergency has been extended, Greyhound Clubs Victoria and GRV are developing complementary Club Recovery and Stimulus Plans that will be supported by funding from a $3.42 million grant from the Victorian Government’s Experience Economy Survival Package. To boost revenue for participants, GRV is introducing a new racing calendar on 1 July that will deliver overall annual prize money distribution of more than $47 million and increase the number of average weekly race meetings from 23 to 25 across the year. You can find out more about the racing program in this edition of the Monthly along with a report on the trial of Saturday morning meetings broadcast on Sky. We will review this shortly with the TAB. GRV is sharing almost $290,000 in accrued unspent prizemoney from June 1 to June 30. There will be $80 unplaced payments which will apply at 37 meetings across Ballarat, Bendigo, Cranbourne, Healesville, Warrnambool, Shepparton and Warragul. Horsham and Sale will host a combined nine Provincial Level meetings where starters will receive unplaced $80 payments. In addition, both Geelong Rank Limit Tuesday meetings will be increased to Provincial Full Stakes and prizemoney increases will be trialed at The Meadows Provincial (MEP) and Sandown Provincial (SAP) meetings over June. As occurred in March 2019, GRV would have preferred to make the decision to reallocate unspent prizemoney again in March this year but due to uncertainties around COVID-19 and the on-going race program it was not possible to do so.
GRV is also stepping up its promotional and racing coverage, which will help retain the new audience greyhound racing has gained while other sports have shut down, through more use of social media, further developing the Watchdog app and building more partnerships with broadcast media. Some recent initiatives include the Behind The Boxes podcast, hosted by GRV’s Molly Haines; Mick Floyd and Jason Adams on the Sandown and GRV websites; and the ‘The Lids Fly’ with Jack Heverin and Molly Haines on SEN Track from 6pm on Thursdays. And Channel 7’s popular Thrill of the Chase program will return in November for greyhound racing’s second annual Melbourne Festival of Racing.
GRV, and the 13 clubs which come under the banner of Greyhound Clubs Victoria, have a strong and proud history of banding together to help those in need and we wanted to show our support for the families of the four fallen police officers who lost their lives in that tragic crash on April 22. During May, there were 24 winners from the Blue Box at The Meadows and Sandown, generating a $6000 donation from GRV to the fund set up to support the police officers’ families. However, GRV has taken the decision to round that up to $10,000. This is our way of showing our love and respect for all police officers doing their jobs to keep us safe. The end of May also saw the start of the 2020 Coursing season. The National Coursing Association of Victoria (NCAV) and GRV have worked closely on developing COVID-19 race meeting protocols that mirror those that have been used for the GRV circle track meetings and coursing meets will be conducted under strict guidelines to provide a safe and healthy environment. Another change is that both the Derby and Oaks meetings will be held over consecutive Sundays, as will the Waterloo Cup in 2021, to give competitors a proper break between races. In other news, I’d like to welcome Lisa Tripodi as GRV’s new board member. Lisa has been appointed for a three-year term and brings valuable financial expertise to the Board, backed by more than 20 years’ experience in accounting, assurance services and risk management. She also has a strong understanding of greyhound racing from her previous audit experience with GRV in 2013-14. Please join me in welcoming her to GRV. Finally, while greyhound racing in Victoria has come through strongly in the crisis, I must caution us all about becoming complacent. Please keep following race day and trial protocols until we know when we can start easing them. And, if you haven’t already done so, join the ‘Let Us All Play’ campaign by downloading the COVIDSafe app as the more information we have, the better equipped our community will be to resume and rebuild. Once again, I thank everyone for what has been a fantastic effort over the past three months and let’s all stay safe and keep racing.

GAP update around COVID-19 The Greyhound Adoption Program continues to take in new dogs from participants and greyhounds are still being adopted into loving homes. While standard pre-entry assessments have been on hold, intakes have been occurring at Seymour (under strict COVID-19 protocols) without the temperament assessment on the day of intake. GAP has been working through the waiting list to take in as many dogs as it can and has now caught up to a similar point to where things were prior to the pandemic. To assist participants, GAP commenced racetrack intakes on 1 June, employing social-distancing
Greyhound racing benefits from Victorian Government support package GRV will receive $3.4 million in State Government funding to help secure the sport’s 4,000 jobs and sustain the industry. GRV CEO Alan Clayton said the support package was welcome. “This package will assist us maintaining prize money and ensuring the viability of all our clubs, many of which are in regional Victoria and which have like other businesses been hit hard by COVID-19,” Mr Clayton said. “Like all racing codes, greyhound racing has taken a financial hit with COVID-19 through loss of revenue due to our joint venture partner the TAB having to close its retail outlets, no crowds at race meetings and the closing of gaming venues at some of our clubs.
protocols and without temperament assessments on the day of intake. Initial sessions will be held at Sandown, Ballarat and Sale in the first half of June. As COVID-19 restrictions are easing, GAP is planning to restart pre-entry assessments at racetracks in mid-June. If participants want to book new dogs into GAP, they should contact Racing Services on (03) 8329 1000 or email gapbooking@grv.org.au.
“Clubs have been particularly hard hit by the need to race without crowds. “This new support will ensure the 12 clubs currently operating can continue to maintain safe, high-quality racing and training facilities so that they are ready to open their gates to the wider community once it is safe to do so.”

Almost $290,000 in accrued unspent prize money will be shared across level three races and select provincial meetings from June 1 to June 30, GRV CEO Alan Clayton said. “Payment of unplaced prize money at many Level 3 race meetings (and selected provincial tracks), in June, will ensure that accrued unspent prize money is distributed to participants across all racing regions and help maintain nominations whilst we have expanded our racing program,” mar Clayton said.
“We are also trialing targeted prize money increases at The Meadows Provincial (MEP) and Sandown Provincial (SAP) meetings in June,” Mr Clayton said. “We wish to encourage participants to race greyhounds over distances of 500m and above and provide feeder opportunities and experience for greyhounds preparing to race at the higher Level 1 metro meetings.”
“Unplaced prize money payments of $80 per unplaced runner will be distributed to participants at many meetings across June.
The reallocation was made after an accrual of prize money in 2019-20 due to a number of reasons including insufficient active dogs, lower field sizes and starters, the impacts of canine gastro, fire-related smog, heat and other weatherrelated occurrences and track or equipment breakdowns, and a reduction in feature race prizemoney post COVID-19.
“This includes 37 meetings across the seven country tracks that will hold Level 3 meetings – Ballarat, Bendigo, Cranbourne, Healesville, Shepparton, Warrnambool, and Warragul.”
In 2019, GRV reallocated unspent prize money in March but this year it was not possible to take these decisions earlier because of uncertainties around the racing program due to COVID-19, Mr Clayton said.
Mr Clayton said the reallocation would help inject prize money across all regions and tracks and across the breadth of the weekly schedule to ensure it could reach the widest participant base as possible. “In addition, Horsham and Sale provincial meetings will also benefit from the reallocation,” Mr Clayton said. “These two tracks will host a combined nine Provincial Level meetings in June and participants with starters will receive the unplaced payments of $80.” Mr Clayton said the Geelong Rank Limit meeting held on Tuesdays would be increased to Level 2 prizemoney for the June meetings.

GR8 EIGHT: Local stars to reap rewards with new series A new initiative titled the GR8 Eight series is bringing together Victoria’s elite greyhounds to allow them to earn greater prize money and stimulate interest from racing fans and punters. It began running parallel with Sandown’s May Carnival and extends into June. The GR8 Eight series comprises 12 x $15,000 Special Events spread across Victoria’s two metropolitan tracks and run over a variety of distances. GRV backs ‘Let us all play’ return to sport campaign Some of Australia’s biggest names across sport, music and other sectors are uniting to encourage all Australians to download the Government’s COVIDSafe app. While greyhound racing in Victoria has been able to continue during the current pandemic, albeit without crowds, GRV acknowledges the difficulties other sports are facing in not being able to operate. GRV CEO Alan Clayton jumped at the opportunity to support the #LetUsAllPlay campaign in support of the COVIDSafe app, after being approached by Racing Victoria. “We consider it a privilege that greyhound racing is continuing in Victoria, and it comes on the back of strict new race-day protocols and a united effort from our clubs, participants and staff,” Mr Clayton said. “I’d encourage everyone to download the COVIDSafe app to help slow the spread of COVID-19, and in turn assist other sectors, including the various sporting bodies who aren’t currently operating, to get back on their feet.” The COVIDSafe app is designed to speed up the ability of health authorities to alert people who have been exposed to cases of COVID-19, which helps to protect them along with their friends and family. incredible job. They all feed them and exercise them… it’s a real family affair,” Theo said.
Local trainers dominated proceedings at Shepparton’s historic Saturday morning greyhound race meeting on 23 May, and none more so than Tallygaroopna couple Fay and Theo Van Taarling.
The Shepparton meeting was the conclusion of a threeweek trial of Saturday morning greyhound racing following successive Saturday morning meetings at Ballarat.
BY ANDREW COPLEY
“This is the first time we’ve trained a treble,” Theo said proudly. The couple began training greyhounds in 1974 before hanging up the collar and lead for a 15 year period while putting their kids through school. They then returned to their much-loved passion in 1995 and have been heavily involved in the sport ever since.
“Twilight Flame is owned by a few boys at the Pine Lodge Cricket Club, and that was her first win, so they were absolutely rapt, despite not being allowed on course because of crowd restrictions,” Theo said.
An evaluation of Saturday morning greyhound racing is now underway with a view to potentially making it a regular fixture.

Vale Karen Leek The greyhound racing community is devastated by the shock news that Karen Leek has passed away, aged 69. Karen was one of the most respected people in greyhound racing, recognised for her success as a breeder, rearer and trainer. Based in Devon Meadows, Karen had an outstanding reputation as a commercial rearer, having raised many champions including Bewildering, Brokenwood, Extreme Magic, Godsend, Moreira and Nolen. Karen was also a major contributor to greyhound racing administration, including volunteering her time on various panels for the betterment of the sport and being a member of the Greyhound Owners Trainers & Breeders Association (GOTBA).
Vale Tony McGrath
Victorian greyhound racing has lost an icon of our sport with the passing of Tony McGrath after a long health battle. Tony, 76, was regarded as one of the all-time great greyhound breeders, with his prominent ‘Proven’ bloodline producing many elite greyhounds including Proven Adonis (Bold Trease Carnival Cup), Proven Lethal (Sandown Cup) and Proven Nitro (Shootout) to name just a few. He was inducted into GRV’s Hall of Fame in 2013 for his outstanding success as a breeder. Tony was also part of GRV’s GOBIS Committee, and a long-serving President and Life Member of the Shepparton GRC, where son Carl is currently the Manager. Shock win came as no surprise to elated greyhound trainer BY ANDREW COPLEY Last Friday was a moment to savour for East Shepparton trainer Marien Sullivan when her greyhound Serengeti Icon landed her first ever win at the mammoth odds of $92.20. Lining up in a Restricted (0-6) Wins Heat at Bendigo in start number 25, Serengeti Icon’s breakthrough performance meant more to Marien than any other victory she had been involved in. Formerly of NSW, Marien has trained hundreds of winners including many at Sydney’s premier track, Wentworth Park, and she also trained a treble one night at Nowra. “I’ve been involved in the sport for 12 or 13 years with my husband Bob and we’ve had our share of winners, but Serengeti Icon’s win was extra special,” she said. “We’d been plotting that win. When the 660m race came up at Bendigo, Bob said ‘that’s her’. The 660m is a hard run and we knew it was going to suit her.” “To see her win was so satisfying because we have been persevering with her for so long. She was winless after 24 starts but we didn’t care because we know how well she trials, and we know her quirks and the fact that she’s field-shy.” Not being a punter, Marien didn’t cash in on the massive odds, but that didn’t take away from the joyous occasion, which came seven months after Serengeti Icon’s debut. “When she won all I could do is laugh because we waited so long for this,” she said. “We bred her ourselves, and when you breed greyhounds you invest so much time and money into them you’d be silly not to give them every chance of reaching their potential. It’s important to show a lot of patience.” “Every dog has a key… you’ve just got to find it.”

Alf Spiteri; Man for all seasons BY PHIL WEIR If there’s a life story that needs to be told, Alf Spiteri needs to think about who is playing him in the movie. It’s a story of persistence, patience and enduring love for the dog. A story that embodies the spirit of the greyhound trainer. It spans 62 years of training dogs from 80 years of life, without any discernible sign of signs of stopping. In Alf’s own words, “I’ll never get rid of the dogs until they take me away!” Alfred Spiteri arrived in Australia from his native Malta in 1957, at the ripe old age of 16, and it didn’t take long for him to pursue a racing, a sport instilled by his father in Malta. “My father, who died when I was 11, used to take me to the horse racing in Malta, but horses were too expensive.’
There was also time for business. Alf ran an electrical and furniture store in Altona North for 30 years. His son, Stephen, recalls they had about eight dogs at the time and Alf used to close the shop early when he had to make a race meeting. “One of the convenient aspects of having your own business.” Stephen recalls “It was a big family effort. I was also involved before my marriage and even remember studying for year 12 exams at the racetrack.” Stephen also thinks there’s something about the number of trainers with a Maltese background, but Alf can’t pinpoint why. “Azzopardis, Barbaras, Camilleris, all Maltese. I don’t know, but they’re very good.”
With £200 borrowed from his mother, Alf bought his first dogs in Sydney in 1958 and by the early sixties found some success with Wyalong Guy. “A few other trainers had him and couldn’t do anything with him. We didn’t even walk him, and he won his first five races! He was favourite for the 1963 Silver Chief, but unfortunately he broke a toe in the semi.” 1971, and Alf is newly married and renting a farm in Yuroke. The bloke living across the road is none other than legendary muscle man, pioneer and Hall-of-Famer George Schofield. “We stayed five years there. George had a straight track and taught me about the muscles in the dogs. We were very good friends with George.”
"Life is too precious, too short. Every minute is a joy for us." There have been many greyhounds, but a few stand out for Alf. “Wyalong Guy, of course and Regal Peak. Emiluke Express won about 25 races. We had another Wyalong Guy in 1989-1990. Now we have only two dogs (Toyman Tim and Mane Toy). We had a double with them just a few weeks back in Bendigo.” “I’m nearly 80 and finding bit hard to go around at the moment, but, thanks to my wife, she drives me around.” Alf celebrates his 80th on June 6. Their days are still dedicated to the dogs. “We start exercising and emptying them at eight o’clock every morning, then I go out again at three, they have food and so on, and my wife goes out at about eight and empties them and rugs them up.” “I love going to the track, I meet many friends, have a discussion and enjoy it. The dogs are fully part of my life. I will regret the day I can’t go out of the house. They are beautiful. Life is too precious, too short. Every minute is a joy for us.”

Alf never did repay his mother the £200 for those first dogs. “I never paid her back, so I hope she doesn’t remember when I get to heaven!”
Bar, kitchen & function rooms
Coursing lovers are up and about thanks to the launch of the 2020 season on 31 May at Lang Lang.
■
As per licensed venue regulations, all bar and food facilities are closed.
Following a delayed start to the season because of restrictions around COVID-19, this year incorporates new race-day protocols.
■
Participants are required to vacate the venue once their greyhound/s have finished competing for the day.
NCA Secretary Sean Lithgow said the new protocols relate to social distancing and effectively mirror those employed at TAB tracks around the state, with minor variations.
2020 coursing season – First four meetings
BY ANDREW COPLEY
“The new rules are quite strict, but they are necessary. The protocols may be relaxed in the future but at this stage this is what we must adhere to for the safety of the greyhound community,” Lithgow said. “Entry into our coursing meetings is only be open to licensed people, which means we all have to help each other more than ever on race day.” Longwood is set to host Victoria’s next three coursing meetings – on 14 June, 21 June & 5 July. A handful of other meetings are still to be finalised, however the NCA has committed to staging its final event of the season – the Waterloo Cup Final – at Lang Lang on 30 August.
Victorian coursing: Race-day protocols ■
Attendance restricted to trainers with runners engaged (or a rep), catchers, accredited media and essential staff, officials and management – No children; unless engaged as a catcher. (Attendees must be licensed persons) If rooms required, social distancing room capacities to be adhered to as 4m2 per person.
■
Stewards and club staff to manage marshalling procedures to ensure social distancing is maximised.
■
All people entering the track on race day will be subject to health checks including temperature testing, with people reading a high temperature not admitted to the track.
■
Participants are expected to maintain social distancing and not congregate. If they remain in the area surrounding their vehicle/trailer while not actively involved or watching courses this will be achieved.
■
The marshalling area which is already an outdoor area will be significantly increased in size to enable the required social distancing.
■
Only one event will be called up at a time rather than the standard two to minimise numbers of dogs and handlers in the now larger marshalling area.
■
The process of bringing dogs up to the slips will be changed to ensure only one greyhound is bought up at a time. Red collar will always be brought up on the left side of the slipper and once secured, the white collar will be brought up on the right side and secured.

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, entry into GAP is booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au. Please note that although standard pre-entry assessments have been on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions, greyhounds have continued to be accepted into GAP from participants without the pre-entry assessment under conditions designed to protect GAP staff from the risk of COVID-19. Initially this was just at Seymour, but racetrack intakes commenced 1 June. All greyhounds with booked sessions were moved back to the waiting list and participants will be contacted in the order that they were booked on the system when intake spaces become available. Pre-entry assessments are planned to be re-introduced mid-June. GRV appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding, while GAP is working very hard to increase the number of greyhounds being accepted and reduce waiting times. To be eligible for acceptance into GAP your greyhound must: ■ have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS* described on this page and given at least 10 days before entry; and ■
not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to entry (‘wind-down period’). More information is available through Member Services or at greyhoundcare.grv. org.au/retirement-from-racing.
Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au
GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. * Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. Please contact GRV if you would like more information.
The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.
NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently.
GRV asks participants to be aware that session dates and times are subject to change in hot weather. The GRV Hot Weather Policy is now being applied to GAP Pre-Entry Assessment dates. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

Manager Profile Craig Monigatti
History Catch Up
Craig is an all-round good guy who was born in Casterton in Western Victoria. After completing primary school, the family moved to Warrnambool when he was 7, for a better education and then to Ballarat University, where he completed a Bachelor of Human Movement and a Bachelor of Management. In 2002 he headed to Melbourne to start full time work with the Carlton Football Club. Working in administration for their VFL team, Craig co-ordinated many areas of the club including their travel, clothing, administration support for coaches and football managers.
with Neil Brown Hall of Fame Superstar Stayer Bold Trease. The best known chaser to ever come out of Warrnambool, the Warrior is famous for winning four Sandown Cups however Hall of Fame trainer Norm McCullagh told me "People didn't realise he could always sprint. He would break 26 easy at Warrnambool any time. I would trial him there in lead up runs after a spell. One morning he ran 25.40. My mate that worked the clock that morning couldn't believe it. He had outstanding speed."
Craig found a passion for stats and was promoted to Video and Statistics Manager working alongside coaches in planning and reviewing of matches and players, ending up as the Football Technology Manager and Head Performance Analyst at the Carlton Football Club, working with senior coaches Wayne Brittain, Denis Pagan, Brett Ratten, Mick Malthouse, Brendon Bolton and with Ross Lyon. After 14 years working in all football departments, Craig started his role at Warrnambool Greyhound Racing in 2016. With only one subject to complete in Master of Business (Sport Management) from Deakin University, he has had to resist watching repeats of his favourite TV show Survivor and get into his studies. Craig has one beautiful daughter, Stella and is a long-suffering Carlton supporter.
History
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA JUNE 2020
By 1976, the club was faced with vast expenditure to upgrade facilities that were desperately in need of repair. The move to the Warrnambool Showgrounds, which was located on Crown land, meant that the State Government would provide funding for the development of the Wannon Park track. The final meeting at the Botanic Road site was held in 1978 before an exceptionally large crowd, which saw the Norm McCullagh trained Luskadena win the last race. If bookies turnover was any indication, the move to bigger and better facilities was warranted. Jack Daffy, Club President (1971-1982) remembers changes to the way the sport was run. He is proud of the fact that Warrnambool was the first club in Victoria to operate with electric lights, to use electric timing, to employ a full time secretary, to use telex to distribute information and to appoint a veterinarian to the club to examine greyhounds before they raced. Any greyhound that was put out of a race was suspended for 28 days, which discouraged owners from entering greyhounds that were not well prepared. GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT
BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING
VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.
Retiring greyhounds to a third party When a participant re-homes a greyhound to anyone other than themselves, it is critical that the correct and complete new owner details are provided to GRV. This is ideally done by both the existing and new owner completing and signing the re-homing form (Notice of Retirement as a Pet - Transfer to New Owner form) and returning it to GRV. Alternatively, notification can be done by the participant through their FastTrack login (retirements function) or provided to GRV directly. GRV is a licensed Microchip Registry. GRV must comply with laws that will not allow the dog to be transferred into the new owner’s name until the new owner confirms that they have the dog. If the re-homing form is not completely correctly, GRV will need to contact the new owner to verify this, hence the need for correct details. The new owner’s details required are: ■
Name (first and last name)
■
Full address (including suburb, state and postcode)
■
Phone number
■
Email address
■
Alternate contact person and phone number (in case the dog is found wandering and the owner cannot be contacted)
Once the new owner’s details are verified by GRV, and the retirement has been confirmed, the greyhound will move to the participant’s ‘My Retired Dogs’ list, they will be advised of the change via email and the greyhound’s status will change to ‘Retired’. When handing over the greyhound to the new owner, it is much easier to have them fill in their details and sign the form at the time, as this eliminates the need for GRV to contact both the racing owner and the new owner. All clubs should have copies of the rehoming forms The forms are also available at https://greyhoundcare.grv.org. au/rehoming/rehoming-pack/.

Changes at GAP to support participants to re-home their greyhounds I would like to thank participants for their patience during the challenging times that GAP has faced over the last 3-4 months; first gastroenteritis (which is ongoing) and now COVID-19. Greyhound intakes: GAP is still taking in new dogs from participants and adoptions are still going well. Adoption processes have been changed at GAP to speed up adoptions to cater for the increased demand for pet greyhounds. Please see the GAP page of this edition for upto-date information on intakes. If participants want to book new dogs into GAP, they should continue to contact Racing Services as they have always done. If you have a greyhound that you are trying to rehome, or think you may want to re-home in coming months, please contact GRV to put it on the GAP waiting list, as this gives you more options. You always have the option to remove the dog from the waiting list later if you don't need GAP to take the greyhound.
Gastroenteritis: Can I please ask you to remind participants about the ongoing impact that canine gastroenteritis is having on the operation of GAP. It appears that some participants are still taking infected dogs to GAP, resulting in extended and lengthy quarantining of incoming dogs, which is contributing to longer waiting lists.
Feeding a complete dry food – benefits for greyhounds and participants Traditionally most trainers feed a mix of raw meat and dry kibble to their greyhounds. However, there is mounting evidence suggesting the risks of including raw meat in a greyhound’s diet outweigh the benefits. Not only is there a risk of disease (as evidenced by the recent gastro issue) and parasites, but also the risk of prohibited substances in the meat. Dry feed on the other hand has the potential to be a safer, easier, more nutritionally balanced and cheaper option when compared to the traditional racing greyhound diet. If you carefully select the brand of your dry food, you can ensure it meets all the nutritional requirements of a high performing racing greyhound. In addition, there are cost benefits of a dry feed diet. The cost benefits can be measured in both dollars as well as time. With most racing greyhound diets consisting of meat, kibble and various other supplements, the preparation of each dogs feed can be time consuming. In contrast, dry feed is nutritionally balanced and, in most cases, can simply be weighed out and given to your greyhounds with no need for any mixing or addition of supplements. The time saved by a feeding regime like this can be invested into other activities that return a better outcome. When the cost of the meat and supplements are considered, as well as refrigerated storage, the weekly cost of feeding your racing greyhound is likely to be lower using a premium dry feed compared with a traditional racing greyhound diet. Your greyhounds could be fed a nutritionally balanced premium dry feed for $2-3 per day.
Premium dry feeds can ultimately give peace of mind that your greyhounds are being fed a nutritionally balanced, disease-free, contaminant-free, easily stored diet that can save you time and money. So, given the current COVID-19 restrictions, you may find it is a perfect time to transition to a cheaper and more nutritionally balanced premium dry food. For more information on feeding a premium dry food visit GRV’s Greyhound Care and Standards Website.
Rehoming Package now available The Rehoming Package enables a GRV registered owner to comply with the requirements of The Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds (the Code), and to transfer the ownership of the greyhound on the GRV Microchip Registry to the new pet owner.

Additional race meetings to underpin participant earning capacity The new racing calendar kicks in on July 1, with greyhound trainers certain to welcome the news of a full racing program thanks to an increased number of race meetings to be scheduled across the state. GRV CEO Alan Clayton said that as a minimum, GRV is aiming to deliver on its regular 23 weekly race meetings for the season with extra meetings planned in Spring to compensate for anticipated cancellations during the warmer months when meetings are inevitably cancelled due to hot weather. “As many as 27 race meetings could be scheduled some weeks, most notably during Spring-Summer, to compensate for the anticipation of cancellations during NovemberFebruary,” Mr Clayton said. “Victoria’s overall annual prize money distribution will be more than $47 million. “The calendar aims to ensure there are opportunities there for our participants and clubs and for locally bred dogs.” Greyhound racing’s recently elevated media coverage is also set to continue, with Channel 7’s popular Thrill of the Chase program to return to air in November for greyhound racing’s second annual Melbourne Festival of Racing.

The Gippsland Festival of Racing will again begin with the Sale Cup on Boxing Day, while a new Western District Festival is also set to be introduced. GRV has also moved to create opportunities for participants impacted by the cancellation of two major events in 2020 – the Nationals and the National Straight Track Championship – because of travel restrictions around COVID-19. These two feature events will be replaced in 2020 only by a Victorian State Championship and a Healesville Bonanza respectively. In further good news, GRV has committed to programming additional ‘Gr8 Eight’ features, along with increasing opportunities around distance racing. New race for the ‘battlers’ GRV and the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association are excited to announce a new race to be included in the upcoming Bendigo Cup Carnival – the Battlers Cup. The new event is aimed at creating an opportunity for the lesser performed greyhounds and the smaller and hobby type trainer, to compete for a higher stakes event and share the spotlight on a bigger stage. Offering $5000 to the winner, with a total final stake of $7750 over 425m at Bendigo, the Battlers Cup will no doubt become a target for trainers with Tier 3 dogs and GRV and the BGRA are expecting the race to prove very popular. “The BGRA is always keen to look at ways to provide opportunities for participants at all levels and our two carnivals offer a host of different types of races, but none for the lower tier grade of greyhound,” said BGRA Manager, Troy Harley. “To ensure the race series serves the purpose it is supposed to, quite a few conditions of eligibility have been placed on it so we are extremely grateful for GRV’s support in accepting the conditions and supporting the stakes level and, who knows, it might be the first of several of these types of races”. Greyhound racing in Victoria provides opportunities for greyhounds of all abilities to compete and GRV is focused on ensuring that continues. A race of the kind is a bonus for participants, who keep turning up week in, week out, at Tier 3 race meetings for the love of the dog and the competition. GRV CEO Alan Clayton believes it to be a great concept and reward for the hard working and loyal participants.
“We were very quick to support the race concept, conditions and level of stake money and look forward to seeing the interest in this series and wish everyone who competes in it the best of luck”. Details of the inaugural Battlers Cup, to be run at Bendigo over 425m are:
Dates: Heats Wednesday June 24 (up to 12 heats); Final Friday July 3 Final.
Prize Money: 1st $5,000; 2nd $1,500; 3rd $750; unplaced runners $100. A consolation will also be conducted for provincial full stakes
Eligibility: ■

■
Must be in trainers care as 25 May 2020
■

■
Minimum 10 starts at close of nominations
■
No city wins (full stake metro)
■
No city starts (full start metro) after 1 June 2020

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA JUNE 2020
“GRV is continually looking at ways we can help the grass roots participants and the hobby trainers that have great passion for the industry, who rarely get the chance to compete for feature race stakes,” Mr Clayton said.
