EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: ANDREW COPLEY MANAGING EDITOR: PHIL WEIR Greyhound Monthly Victoria (GMV) magazine is produced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), the governing body of greyhound racing in this state. GRV strongly encourages all Victorian greyhound racing participants - in particular breeders and trainers - to take the time to read each issue of GMV to ensure they are across relevant key issues. Each edition of GMV aims to provide an overview of key happenings in relation to Victorian greyhound racing that occurred during the previous month, as well as promoting significant and relevant upcoming activities and events.

COVER: Cranbourne Winter Cup winner Houdini Boy with proud handler Darren Pattinson.

As the 2019-20 financial year ends, I would like to take this opportunity to update you all on how our sport has been travelling over the past 12 months. Despite the impact of COVID-19, bushfires and canine gastro we managed to deliver nearly all of our scheduled racing calendar and our wagering performance has also held up well while we’ve also attracted many new customers which we are working to retain. And, as you may have noticed, GRV managed to really step up its marketing and race coverage activities over the year. One exciting development here has been a partnership with Sky Racing and TAB to broadcast greyhound racing to new markets in the USA and Europe as the Greyhound Channel via skyracingworld.com and online wagering companies. This is an unprecedented opportunity for Victorian greyhound racing to open up a massive new wagering audience which will help us work through COVID-19, increase returns to participants and position our sport for an exciting new future. The initial focus is on America where one Australian greyhound meeting a day, with separate USA Tote pools, is screened live into the USA, which started with the Shepparton meeting on June 15. The plan is to increase the number of Victorian meetings on US screens and to start co-mingling wagering pools following regulatory approvals. And while data and statistics for 2019-20 won’t be fully compiled until July, and published in our annual report in the last quarter of this year, it is already clear we have made very significant progress on reducing overall euthanasia numbers and track fatalities. These strong outcomes are very much due to how the clubs, GCV, participants, GOTBA and GRV have all worked together and I’d like to thank you all for what we have managed to achieve in very difficult times. I am confident that the sport is now well positioned to deliver some great outcomes in 2020-21.

This will involve expanding our race program that will provide more opportunities to greyhounds at all levels and expand what we can offer to wagering providers, and in doing so, increase returns to participants. GRV will also continue to focus on greyhound welfare, particularly through our safe racing program. For the 2020-21 season, GRV has 1194 meetings programmed and we are aiming to hold a minimum of at least 23 meetings per week with an anticipated target of 26 per week and we are already delivering 25 weekly meetings. Greyhound Clubs Australia has released its Group Racing Calendar for the 2020/2021 racing season and while some feature events have already been cancelled, such as the Nationals and Straight Track Championships, GRV will be holding a number of other events to compensate for these losses. Finally, I would like to say that this has been one of the most complex working years of my career, both on a professional and personal level, and I am sure many of you feel the same. None of us could have seen this coming and yet you have all risen to the challenge. And I would once again like to thank you all for working together to earn the privilege of keeping our sport on track at a time where so many other activities have been limited. I look forward to this spirit continuing in the coming year as we build on the many achievements of 2019-20.

Clarification – no change to VICGREYS eligibility criteria Recently, a display on GRV’s FastTrack portal created confusion over whether GRV was making changes to the eligibility for the VICGREYS program. GRV confirms that no change has been made and any greyhound with a ‘V’ in its ear brand is eligible for VICGREYS. This eligibility for VICGREYS was introduced in 2017, and means that all Vic Bred greyhounds (V ear branded) of all ages are eligible for VICGREYS, regardless of the greyhound’s location or kennel address or the location of their registered owner. GRV has clarified the information displayed on GRV platforms to resolve the issue. We apologise for any confusion this wording may have caused.

Veterinary Advice Notice to Participants – Ehrlichia canis in WA and NT dogs E. canis is a bacterial infection that is spread between canines (including domestic dogs and wild members of the canine family such as foxes) through brown-tick bites. Apart from detections in imported dogs in Victoria in 2016 and 2018, this disease has not been previously diagnosed in Australia. The brown-tick is mostly associated with tropical and subtropical environments and has been identified in dogs in Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. However, because the tick can complete its entire life cycle indoors, it has the potential to establish populations in colder climates. The state government is working with a private vet to manage the dogs, whilst putting in place biosecurity measures, conducting further surveillance and undertaking investigation as to the origin of the infections. There have been a small number of cases detected recently in remote communities within Western Australia and Northern Territory. Any suspicion for E. canis, particularly in greyhounds from interstate or after known tick-exposure, should be investigated by your veterinarian. E. canis can be diagnosed by a blood test. If treated quickly, symptoms will generally improve within a few days and without long term effects. Because there is no vaccination, tick control is the most effective means of preventing the disease.

E. canis is a notifiable disease. This means that it must be reported to agricultural authorities. Your veterinarian will be able to do this if E. canis in a greyhound is suspected or confirmed. Further information: https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/ehrlichiosis If you have any questions or concerns, speak to your veterinarian or contact vets@grv.org.au.

Important advice for participants attending race meetings GRV and Greyhound Clubs Victoria (GCV) encourage all participants to remain vigilant during the COVID pandemic and, in particular, at the tracks in the Municipalities of Hume and Casey.

The Story of Roberta and Snoop Dogg By Philippa Lavery Back in 2007, Greyhound Adoption Program and Corrections Victoria joined forces to create the Prison Pet Partnership. Essentially what this partnership means is that selected greyhounds are paired with prisoners from Victorian minimum-security prisons – Dhurringile (male) and Tarrengower (female) – to help prepare them for life as a domestic pet. One person that can attest to the successfulness of the partnership is former Tarrengower prisoner Roberta*. While in prison she fostered numerous dogs over the course of three and a half years, and they brought plenty of enrichment to her life. “It was awesome. I had a paid job while in there, but the greyhounds I did because I wanted to. I had a bit of time up my sleeve so the dog would come with me everywhere until it had to be returned to GAP. I used to get a lot of the dogs that were a little bit more challenging than the other ones. It was very rewarding at the end seeing the dog leave more relaxed than how it came in.”

If you are attending a race meeting, we recommend that you travel to the track and then return home, avoiding visiting shops and services in these areas. We recommend participants bring their own food or dine in at the racing track venue on site, to avoid the need to leave the track during the meeting. This advice is based on latest advice from the Government regarding the spread of COVID-19. To limit the spread of the virus, participants are advised to refrain from dining at restaurants and fast food outlets surrounding the tracks on the way to, from and during their time on course. For the latest information on COVID-19 please refer to the Department of Health and Human Services website – www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus-covid-19-daily-update And for all GRV advice and protocols please refer to – www.grv.org.au/covid-19

The greyhounds were also a hit with all the other prisoners. “Whenever I would take a dog for a walk the other women would get a buzz out of coming up and patting it. Just having them around was awesome.”

Following his death it took a while for Roberta to recover, but after a lot of nagging from her daughter she decided that if they were going to get another dog it was going to be a greyhound after falling in love with the breed while in prison. On Saturday 16th of May Roberta adopted three-year-old Snoop Dogg (formerly Popeye) and he has already well and truly adapted to his new forever home by claiming her daughters’ bed for himself. For anyone contemplating adopting a greyhound Roberta offers some insight: “They’re the easiest dogs really. They rarely have health issues and they are good pets. They can be energetic, but they can also be lazy. They love their pats and you can play with them. They’re pretty perfect really.” *not her real name.

GA review of rules Greyhounds Australasia recently finalised a first draft of a review of the national rules to improve their structure, make them more user friendly and easier to read and simplify the language used. A consultation process, informing the final version of the national rules will now commence. GRV will consult with Victorian stakeholders, such as GCV and GOTBA in coming months before a State-wide industry and community consultation process begins. It should be noted that GRV Local Rules take precedence over GA rules.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA JULY 2020

Roberta was released in 2018 and returned home to her daughter and Great Dane x Bull Mastiff called Bob who was ten years old. Unfortunately, Bob died last October after it was discovered his body was riddled with cancer.

Karen Leek – a greyhound racing ‘archangel’ BY PETER QUILTY

The entire greyhound racing fraternity was deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic passing of much loved and highly respected Devon Meadows greyhound breeder/trainer Karen Leek, 69, on May 26.

“Karen was a kind and caring person who worked hard to be successful in life. She was always forgiving and ready to help anyone in need. Her dedication to the industry cannot be underestimated; she mentored so many people.”

The emotional outpouring from all sectors of the sport has been unprecedented, with a myriad of industry participants providing touching tributes.

Sandra said she first met Karen through Angela, who was training Lufra Boy at the time.

It goes without saying that Karen was admired for her caring personality and professionalism and gained a wide sphere of respect from all walks of life. Perhaps the most moving of tributes have come from three of her dearest friends – Angela Modra (nee Renshaw), Sandra Reed (nee Hogan) and Sophie Hili. All three have high profile greyhound racing backgrounds – Angela trained champions Lufra Boy and Silver Saul and worked for legendary veterinarian, the late Dr Jim Gannon; Sandra, who was a top trainer in her own right, is the daughter of late training great and long-serving SGRC committeeman Paul Hogan; and Sophie is the wife of late training doyen Joe Hili. Angela, whose son Mark will deliver a eulogy on her behalf, said she had a wonderful friendship with Karen for 56 years. “I had moved to Warrandyte and met Karen when I was 18 and she was only 13,” Angela said. “Initially, it was through our love of horse riding that the friendship developed.” However, it wasn’t long before Angela – who was working for Dr Jim Gannon at his Kew clinic – introduced Karen to a couple of young pups which they “took out into the bush with us when we went riding and that’s where her love of greyhounds began”. In 1969, Karen and Sandra accompanied Angela on a trip to race her champion Lufra Boy in Sydney. The young ladies had such a great time, that not long after they returned to live in Sydney for a short period. Angela said Karen was always there in “the special times of my life – happy and sad”. “But the most memorable of all was when my baby Mark was born. She was there holding him in her arms only three hours after his birth. “And I taught her three things: how to clip and groom dogs, how to train greyhounds, and how to smoke,” Angela quipped. Sandra Reed said she was extremely grateful to have known Karen for 55 years.

“HER DEDICATION TO THE INDUSTRY CANNOT BE UNDERESTIMATED; SHE MENTORED SO MANY PEOPLE.” 8

“The three of us went to live in Sydney for six months. It was 1969, and we lived in a beach house near Wollongong. Karen was working as a barmaid but then moved to Wangaratta with her mother Voila and became involved with its greyhound racing community.” Eventually, Karen worked for Sandra at Rowville for eight years. “She even helped with my kids; in fact, my first son, Steven, is Karen’s godson. I ran a dog grooming salon and she eventually took over the business. But ultimately, she dreamed of becoming a professional greyhound trainer.” Subsequently, Karen and her mother Voila bought Bernie Strong’s ‘Keysborough Kennels’ and Sandra advised her that to be successful in business she needed to “be at the top of the phone book”. “So, she renamed the property ‘Abba Kennels’, which had nothing to do with the Swedish pop group.” Sandra made a return to dog clipping and grooming on a part-time basis for 10 years at Abba Kennels which Karen and Voila also ran as a boarding kennels, cattery, and greyhound training facility for around 20 years.

FEATURE

“Karen and I remained close, and our families would get together for birthdays and at Christmas. We had booked to travel to Alaska and Canada in August, but the trip had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. We had a lot of fun times together – holidays and horse riding. Karen will be greatly missed.” “Even when she was flat-out busy, she would take time to advise and help people. And she would go without to give to her greyhounds.”

Karen’s ‘puppy love’ Karen Leek enjoyed great success over several decades as a breeder and trainer, however her record as a commercial rearer is arguably what set her apart in the industry. Perhaps no other person in Victoria’s history has reared other people’s young pups with as much success as Karen.

“For many years she was also a part of our monthly ‘girls’ lunch’, along with her late mother Voila. It started with a group of 11 around 40 years ago, but we’re now down to six.”

The list of greyhounds she reared include: Bewildering, Brokenwood, Extreme Magic, Godsend, Moreira and Nolen.

Sophie, who knew Karen for 30 years, said in more recent times “she’d pop in for a coffee at my place prior to picking up her great-great-niece ‘Addy’ at a nearby child minding centre”.

Karen also trained greyhounds the ilk of dual Melbourne Cup finalists Relle Louise (1979-80) and Proud Paul (1983-84) – who also finished third in the 1983 Silver Chief and is a younger half-brother of Relle Louise; Copper Lady (1984 Melbourne Cup finalist); Pamlanat (1979 Laurels finalist); Pretanni Belle (runner-up 1983 Sir Arthur Rylah Sapphire Classic); and Din’s Son (winner 2010 Shepparton Cup).

“Karen would help anyone. Even when she was flat-out busy, she would take time to advise and help people. And she would go without to give to her greyhounds.” Sophie added that Karen’s greyhound complex at Devon Meadows was immaculate. “She was a hard worker and so was her mother. She looked after her mum unbelievably – even when she went into a nursing home a couple of years ago, Karen would be there six days a week.” We’ve lost a greyhound racing ‘archangel’… Rest in peace, Karen.

Karen was also a major contributor to greyhound racing administration, including volunteering her time on various panels for the betterment of the sport and being a member of the Greyhound Owners Trainers & Breeders Association (GOTBA). She was also heavily involved in the nominations and committee of the Greyhound Racing Victoria annual awards, siting on both the Greyhound of the Year panel and the Hall of Fame committee Karen and her late mother Voila were also joint proprietors of ‘Abba Kennels’ in Keysborough for around 20 years.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT

BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.

Retiring greyhounds to a third party When a participant re-homes a greyhound to anyone other than themselves, it is critical that the correct and complete new owner details are provided to GRV. This is ideally done by both the existing and new owner completing and signing the re-homing form (Notice of Retirement as a Pet - Transfer to New Owner form) and returning it to GRV. Alternatively, notification can be done by the participant through their FastTrack login (retirements function) or provided to GRV directly. GRV is a licensed Microchip Registry. GRV must comply with laws that will not allow the dog to be transferred into the new owner’s name until the new owner confirms that they have the dog. If the re-homing form is not completely correctly, GRV will need to contact the new owner to verify this, hence the need for correct details. The new owner’s details required are: ■

Name (first and last name)

Full address (including suburb, state and postcode)

Phone number

Email address

Alternate contact person and phone number (in case the dog is found wandering and the owner cannot be contacted)

Once the new owner’s details are verified by GRV, and the retirement has been confirmed, the greyhound will move to the participant’s ‘My Retired Dogs’ list, they will be advised of the change via email and the greyhound’s status will change to ‘Retired’. When handing over the greyhound to the new owner, it is much easier to have them fill in their details and sign the form at the time, as this eliminates the need for GRV to contact both the racing owner and the new owner. All clubs should have copies of the rehoming forms The forms are also available at https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ rehoming/rehoming-pack/.

10

Once the new owner’s details are verified by GRV, and the retirement has been confirmed, the greyhound’s status will change to ‘Retired’, it will move to the participant’s ‘My Retired Dogs’ list, and they will be advised of the change via email.

Update on changes at GAP GRV would like to thank participants for their patience during the challenging times that GAP has faced over the last 3-4 months; firstly gastroenteritis (which is unfortunately still ongoing) and now COVID-19. Adoptions are continuing, although under different processes, as are intakes. Greyhound intakes: GAP has now returned to pre-entry assessments at Seymour and a limited number of clubs across the state, and there will be a gradual return to more regular sessions over the next few months where clubs offer facilities that allow COVID-19 safety restrictions to be properly implemented. If participants want to book new dogs into GAP, they should continue to contact Racing Services as they have always done. If you are considering GAP for a greyhound, or you envisage the need in the future, please book in early to avoid the waiting time when you need it. New PetCheck program: In addition, last month GAP launched a new program to support participants in privately re-homing their retired greyhounds that are still on the GAP waiting list. The pilot program ran very well, and GRV has found an external partner to offer advertisements for participants whose dogs pass the PetCheck assessment. The advantage of this program is that it allows greyhounds on the pre-entry assessment waiting list an alternative pathway for re-homing. It is important to note any greyhound taking part in the PetCheck program will NOT be removed from the pre-entry assessment waiting list, so if it does not pass the PetCheck, or is not re-homed privately before a preentry assessment session becomes available for them, they will still remain in position for the next available pre-entry assessment session. Please consider this new PetCheck program while they are waiting for pre-entry assessment. If anyone would like more information, please contact GAP on 03 57990166. Infectious diseases: Please remember that highly contagious diseases like canine gastroenteritis and Kennel Cough have a significant impact on the operation of GAP. Participants inadvertently taking infected dogs to GAP will lead to GAP having to implement extended quarantining of incoming dogs, which will result in longer waiting lists.

Avoiding positive swabs from contamination through knackery meat and personal medication GRV has previously issued warnings about feeding knackery meat to racing greyhounds and would like to remind all participants that those who choose to do so take the risk that prohibited substances may be inadvertently administered to their greyhounds, regardless of any assurances provided by the supplier. Knackery meat from livestock and horses containing drug residues is the most common source of feed-related positive swabs. As per Figure 1, if livestock are treated with veterinary drugs shortly before slaughter, the meat will usually be processed as “unfit for human consumption” and sold on as knackery meat or pet food. Residues of drugs may still be present in meat and then be consumed by greyhounds. Many of the drugs used in livestock are Prohibited Substances, and some are Permanently Banned Prohibited Substances. Medications which may have been used in livestock and could return a positive drug swab include: ■

Antibiotics: procaine penicillin used to treat infection in farm animals.

Anti-inflammatory drugs or pain killers: used to treat lame or sick animals (e.g. flunixin, dexamethasone).

Local and general anaesthetics: used for procedures such as caesareans in cattle (e.g. lignocaine). Some (e.g. ketamine) are Permanently Banned Prohibited Substances and greyhounds must always be free of these substances, including Out of Competition Tests.

Lethal Drugs: mainly pentobarbitone which is used by veterinarians for humane euthanasia. This may swab positive for weeks after ingestion.

Other sources of feed-related positive swabs include bread or other baked goods containing poppy seeds (morphine/ codeine), foods containing chocolate (theobromine) and liquids such as tea, coffee or energy drinks (caffeine) or other products from ‘health food shops’ or gyms that commonly contain caffeine or other stimulants. The use of human medications, including over-the-counter or prescribed, can produce positive swabs due to cross contamination. Extra precaution should be taken with the use of personal inhalers (e.g. salbutamol), topical gels (e.g. antiinflammatory gels), patches and creams. Always wash your hands after taking your medications, especially if you have to break the tablet (e.g. heart medication). Reduce the risk by avoiding storing, carrying, or administering any personal medication around greyhounds. Practice good hygiene, including when using the bathroom as drugs are eliminated via urine and faeces. Consider wearing gloves, especially when preparing feeds, or handling dogs to minimise any licking of sweat or drug residues.

WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT

What’s in your greyhound’s food bowl?

To protect the integrity of the sport, the trainer is responsible for positive swabs whenever they are reported in a sample, regardless of the drug level measured, and regardless of whether exposure was accidental or deliberate, and it should be noted that often they can’t be distinguished. To view GRV’s guidelines on Feeding, Medication and Supplements: https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ health-and-well-being/feeding-medication-supplementguidelines/#General Further relevant veterinary information including further information on prohibited substances can be found on the Stewards’ General Alerts page: https://fasttrack.grv.org.au/ StewardsHearing/GeneralAlert

Victorian Greyhound Awards 2020

Due to the ongoing CODIV-19 pandemic and the impacts this is having on mass gatherings and events, the 2020 Victorian Greyhound Awards will be held in an online capacity on Sunday 30 August 2020. The awards will presented will be the racing year dependent awards only, as there has been a full racing year. Other awards surrounding the promotion and engagement of the industry will be postponed until the 2021 ceremony, as any nominees that would have been eligible had not had a full 12 months of criteria to measure against. The Hall of Fame will also be postponed until the 2021 ceremony. Further communication will come industry wide in the coming weeks.

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, entry into GAP is booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au. Please note due to COVID-19, pre-entry assessments schedules are constantly under review and subject to change. GRV appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding.

To be eligible for acceptance into GAP your greyhound must: ■

have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS* described on this page and given at least 10 days before entry; and

not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to entry (‘wind-down period’). More information is available through Member Services or at greyhoundcare.grv. org.au/retirement-from-racing.

NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently.

Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. * Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. Please contact GRV if you would like more information.

The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

GRV asks participants to be aware that session dates and times are subject to change in hot weather. The GRV Hot Weather Policy is now being applied to GAP Pre-Entry Assessment dates. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

HEALESVILLE Greyhound Racing Club Manager Profile

GREYHOUND ADOPTION PROGRAM

Cynthia O'Brien

History Catch Up with Neil Brown

Healesville is the only track in Australia to have raced with the lure on the left-hand side of the track, and on the right-side of the track. Also, for a period of time, the lure started from in front of the boxes and didn’t come from behind. The club has raced on grass and loam and is one of few clubs in Australia that has had race meetings canceled due to ice formed on the lure rail.

Meet our first lady of Greyhounds in Victoria. Cynthia O'Brien gained her owner/trainer/public trainer and breeder licence in 1975 and has been a driving force in the industry ever since. Cynthia was born in Wangaratta and excelled at spelling after living in towns such as Byawatha, and Carraragarmungee in the North East of Victoria. A very keen sportsperson with netball and tennis being her chosen sports. She has fond memories of playing tennis with her wooden tennis racquet and being coached by Rex Hartwig. Her most memorable moment came when she was in her last year of primary school at Carraragarmungee performing "On the Ning Nang Nong" by Spike Milligan. While Greyhound have always been in the background for Cynthia, she has worked in administration for the Department of Education, Forestry Commission Victoria, and Victoria Police. But in 2003 she saw advertised a position at Healesville Greyhound Club, where she started her greyhound administration career. Cynthia went on to also be the CEO of Canberra Greyhounds and Manager at Shepparton. Cynthia is always keen to learn and upskill, working with Australian & New Zealand Greyhound Association, National Coursing Association, awarded Life Membership at Healesville, involved with Greyhound Clubs Australia committees. Determination saw Cynthia secure SKY Chanel coverage for greyhound Racing and a Cup Carnival racing event at Canberra, introducing racing Carnivals at Healesville including the Straight Track Championships, the National Straight Track Championships in 2019 including Capalaba & Murray Bridge. Best of all, Cynthia is inclusive of all females in the industry with the annual Women on Track event. Cynthia will continue to be the General Manager of her much-loved straight track as she has done successfully since 2012.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA JULY 2020

The first Healesville Cup, held in 1990, was won by superstar performer Eureka Man. Raced by local club identity the late Ken Patterson, and his wife Pauline, the couple were tireless workers for their local club over many, many years. There would be no doubt Eureka Man is the best greyhound in history to race from the Healesville area. He was judged the Victorian Greyhound of the Year in 1990 and won the Maturity, Cranbourne Cup and a Grafton Cup. He won in four states and made 19 feature finals. From 87 starts he won 44 times and was placed on 20 occasions, winning $103,000 in prizemoney. Patterson paid $1500 for him from the back of a caravan at the Grafton Carnival, he had only raced the once for a second. His only visual fault was a crooked tail.
