COVER: Greyhound Clubs Victoria is encouraging all greyhound racing fans to follow them on Facebook.

The big news this month is that the GRV Board has signed off on an additional $2.84 million annually in prizemoney, effective October 1, which will take Victoria’s total prizemoney and other returns to participants to over $52 million across the year. Most of this prizemoney boost will go to provincial races and is very much aimed at supporting greyhounds who are starting their racing career and encouraging more participants to race at Provincial Level 2 instead of Tier 3 racing. This increase has been generated by a rise in wagering revenue from both an expanded racing program and from more people discovering the excitement of greyhound racing while other sports were not active during COVID lockdown. This represents a substantial increase in overall prizemoney in Victoria. Another example of the depth and strength of our sport today was the great showing by Victorian dogs and trainers at the Greyhound Clubs Australia 2019-20 Awards on 20 September. I congratulate all the Victorian finalists and winners, especially David Burnett and Simon Told Helen for Greyhound of the Year and Anthony Azzopardi for Trainer of the Year. In other good news, some COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted across Victoria, including the removal of the curfew which means we can now enjoy night racing again in Melbourne. The metropolitan clubs and GRV will soon be announcing more details about this, so stay tuned. COVID-19 protocols remain in place at all Victorian racing and trials, including mandatory face masks and social distancing, and you will still need permitted work permits when traveling to, from and within Melbourne. Trainers travelling to and from Melbourne for regional meetings are also advised to give themselves extra time as there may be extended delays at check points. Looking ahead, track safety will continue to be a major focus for GRV and the clubs. We met with a group of trainers referred by GOTBA to receive feedback around track conditions. GRV has listened to the suggestions made in the meetings and has incorporated these into the Safe Racing program.

We will also provide training for the stewards to ensure that they are well placed to make decisions about whether the track is in a fit state for safe racing and trialling. Construction of the new Traralgon track remains on schedule and we are considering options for other tracks such as drop on boxes, enhanced cambers and catching pen upgrades. Remedial track works at Sandown have been concluded and it is anticipated that Sandown will reopen for trialling and racing in October. GRV’s major works program will make it a priority to ensure Sandown’s long-term future as one of the world’s leading greyhound racing venues. We are also really pleased with our GAP numbers through home delivery which have so far exceeded all expectations in providing a loyal greyhound friend for many people throughout the state. I would like to remind you that as summer approaches, it is important you refresh your knowledge of GRV’s Hot Weather and Transport Policies which have had some minor changes this year. You can find out more at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ policies-and-guidance and in this issue of the Monthly. Now is also a good time to start thinking about your fire management plans as well. It has been a very testing time for everyone and I’d like to thank you all for your patience, understanding and co-operation in getting the sport through winter in great shape. Now that spring is here, we can enjoy more great racing this month with the TAB Great Chase Grand Final at The Meadows followed by the Geelong Cup and Hume Cup series. While it is still too early to say I will see you at the track, hopefully that day is coming soon.

Injection of prize money funds into regional Victoria The GRV board has signed off an additional $2.84 million annually which will be directed into prize money throughout Victoria from 1 October, GRV Chair Peita Duncan has announced. “This increase, along with three extra race meetings which we have already introduced, will see returns to participants of more than $52 million across the year and more investment into regional Victoria,” Ms Duncan said.

“GRV is committed to increasing returns to participants across all levels of racing,” Ms Duncan said. “Having increased Tier 3 by $1.37 million (21.6 percent) since November 2017 we will again review Tier 3 in 2021.”

“Such an investment not only assists all our participants but also has a flow-on effect into businesses throughout regional Victoria where many of our participants work and live.

Vic Provincial Base Prizemoney ($)

“We have 13 tracks across Victoria with 11 of these being in the regions. We employ more than 15,000 people – with most regionally based. At a time when we all need to come together as a wider community, we know this increase in prize money will have a positive impact across the state.” Ms Duncan added that the increase was aimed at grassroots provisional racing which holds key broadcasting slots in our weekly program, and which provides the pathway to Metropolitan racing. Total prize money for each Provincial Open race will rise to $2,725, Mixed 4/5 races will increase to $2,500, Grades 5-7 will go up to $2,360 and Maidens will be worth $2,005. “This will significantly benefit greyhounds who are starting their racing career and support more participants to race at Provincial Level 2 instead of Tier 3 racing,” Ms Duncan said.

6

Ms Duncan said this announcement would further strengthen Victorian greyhound racing’s future as a world leader in the sport.

Racecaller reflects on introduction to coursing BY VICTORIA SHAW

In late January this year, I had the pleasure of hosting the National Coursing Association of Victoria’s Awards for 2019. A great night was had by all, award recipients, friends and family of coursing participants, volunteers and industry partakers alike all enjoyed a great opportunity to get together while delighting in a great evening of greyhound racing at Sandown Park. However, not long after the awards night our lives were turned upside down. COVID-19 impacted our immediate community and our entire nation in a way that none of us could have ever envisaged. Yet, despite being the most disruptive occurrence thrust upon Australian life since World War Two, the coronavirus also gave great reason for the greyhound racing community to soldier on. With administrative measures quickly put into place, greyhound racing continues to provide something for both the greyhound community and its fans to look forward to, including the coursing season for 2020. At the time of the NCAV awards, I was certainly not expecting to be involved in the 2020 coursing season, but with delighted surprise, I received the call to broadcast several coursing meetings at Lang Lang, including the 2020 Waterloo Cup. It has always been a pleasure to host the NCAV awards, however without the first-hand experience of coursing made me feel that my input was somewhat deficient.

The meetings that I attended at Lang Lang were not entirely unscathed by coronavirus protocols. The lack of an audience was perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the pandemic’s impact on coursing meetings, in particular for those that take such pride in their beautiful dogs.

One enormously positive aspect of each coursing meeting that I attended, became obvious to me - how much the greyhounds loved their coursing! As I watched the greyhounds being presented to the slipper in readiness to course, the alacrity that so many of the animals displayed throughout each meeting was a delight to witness. With so many greyhounds wagging their tails with enthusiasm at the prospect of being set to pair off in the chase, the obvious joy of what the dogs were about to embark on transcended any lock down depression. Congratulations to trainer Adele Powell and her kennel staff for their efforts in preparing Making Gravy, the victor of the 2020 Waterloo Cup, and all involved in running of this wonderful event, which has been in existence for 147 years.

Fernando Bale with studmaster Paul Westerveld

Record-breaking Fernando a revolution BY ANDREW COPLEY

Fernando Bale was named the 2019-20 Greyhound Clubs Australia Sire of the Year at the annual GCA awards on 20 September. It was the second straight season Fernando Bale has received the prestigious award following a career on the racetrack which saw him land eight Group 1 wins and $1.29m in stakes. “The Sire of the Year is always a really significant award for any stud dog to win, in my opinion,” proud studmaster, Paul Westerveld said. Fernando Bale was inducted into GRV’s Hall of Fame 12 months ago for his achievements on and off the racetrack, and the collective performances of his offspring since that special moment has seen his star continue to rise. His progeny amassed more than 5000 wins during the 2019-20 Racing Season, including 12 Group 1 victories and a record $16.2m in prize money. Among his top performers during the season were Whiskey Riot and Sennachie, who captured five Group 1s between them and are now forging their own respective careers at stud, while his older progeny includes the likes of Tornado Tears, My Redeemer, Poke The Bear and Dyna Patty.

12

“For Fernando Bale’s offspring to be so successful at group level is a huge achievement,” Westerveld said.

“He has been producing pups that compete at the highest level from the word go, and it’s been non-stop ever since.” Westerveld has a philosophy on what makes the sevenyear-old son of Kelsos Fusileer (USA) and Chloe Allen such a phenomenal sire. “He is renowned for producing pups with fantastic, easy going temperaments and I think the fact they aren’t overly big dogs, they really suit two turn racing, which is why his progeny have dominated metropolitan tracks,” Westerveld said. “And the fact he is sired by an outcross has also contributed to his success at stud, and this hopefully enhances the breeding potential of his female offspring going forward.” A young family based in Victoria’s south-east, the Westervelds are thrilled to have Fernando Bale among their small team of sires at Meticulous Lodge. They cherish every moment with him and take nothing for granted. “We just take it day by because the future is never certain when you’re dealing with a sire’s fertility, but he’s still going strong and filling quotas. We are also fortunate to have a decent amount of storage vials put away for when the time comes that he retires from stud duties.” “He is a beautiful dog at home who loves his routine. He’s very easy going, brilliant to handle and it’s just an honour for us to be able to look after one of the all-time greats every day,” Westerveld said. After a racing career guided by Andrea Dailly that have many regarding him as the best ever, very few, if any greyhounds have burst on the Australian stud scene like Fernando Bale. May his success, and the accolades that go with it, continue.

Popular columnist lost to the sport BY ANDREW COPLEY

Victorian greyhound racing lost one of its great characters when experienced trainer Darryl Embling passed away in late August at age 64 after more than 50 years in the sport. Darryl was a journalist for National Greyhound Form newspaper, penning the popular ‘Bushwacked’ articles, while he was also the anonymous writer behind the ‘Man In The Tree’ column, a must-read feature of the publication thanks to his humorous anecdotes and polarising views. But there was much more Darryl, who grew up in Geelong before moving to Rokewood and then Cape Clear. “As a teenager dad was a slipper for the Victorian Coursing Club in Geelong, when greyhounds coursed at the old Geelong thoroughbred track,” son Clay Morrison revealed. “He loved his greyhounds and he loved coursing.” “He was six foot six and was quite a handy basketballer as a junior, but he got more enjoyment out of training greyhounds so he ended up giving basketball away to concentrate on his dogs.” Clay said Darryl was a caring person who would always put others - and his greyhounds - before his own wellbeing. “He loved walking his dogs. He’d walking them every morning and night for at least 50 kilometres a week for many years, even if he was feeling sick or carrying an injury.”

“He could talk underwater with a mouthful of marbles – he once spoke to a wrong number that called the house for hours.”

“He was also into his music and was part of a group called Plasebo Cure, which released four albums and performed regularly in the Ballarat region. He would sing and play a number of instruments. One of the songs he wrote was called ‘My Greyhound Isn’t Grey’.” Clay recalled an incident at the Ballarat greyhounds some years ago which typified Darryl’s easy-going nature. “Although dad was a big man he never used his size to intimidate people. I remember being at the Ballarat greyhounds with him one night when I was quite young and someone was getting stuck into him about something he had written. Dad just sat back and listened, and the guy was getting angry and frustrated because dad wasn’t arguing back. In the end dad said ‘I apologise if I’ve offended you but it’s my job to report on things as I see them’, and he offered to buy the guy a cup of coffee.” “That was dad. Even though he could talk under water with a mouth full of marbles, he would never force his views on anybody and was always happy to listen to other people’s opinions. He would never judge anyone and didn’t have a bad word to say about anybody.” Darryl, you’ll be missed.

BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination and ensure your Kennel Cough vaccine is up to date. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.

GRV Hot Weather and Transport Policies have been updated GRV reviews the Hot Weather and Transport policies every year after summer. The review this year identified some minor changes to both policies. These changes have been updated on our website and will have been communicated on FastTrack. In addition, all Clubs will be provided with a poster for them to place in the kennelling area, highlighting important temperatures relating to greyhound racing, trialling and transport. Please read these policies as they affect the management of race meetings, trials and transport where the air temperature is 32°C or above. For more information visit the GRV’s Care and Standards webpage https:// greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/policies-and-guidance/. Please see below for a description and rationale for the changes.

HOT WEATHER POLICY CHANGES Apart from some re-ordering and consolidation of clauses, removal of unnecessary clauses, addition of new text and clauses to provide clarity and alignment with the greyhound Code of Practice, the key changes from a participant perspective are as follows, noting that early kenneling remains unchanged for the 2020-21 summer. a.

b.

16

Very hot days: Clause 31 provides additional protection to greyhounds by clarifying how the ambient temperature at the track should be measured when it exceeds 35°C and the appropriate action, noting that the BOM stations from which temperature forecasts are received are several kilometres from the tracks. Penalty-free scratching: the penalty-free scratching provisions will continue during the 2020-21 season but clause 19 now states that taking advantage of penaltyfree scratching is a breach of the policy. Hot weather scratchings will be proactively monitored during the coming summer season with a focus on monitoring individual trainers’ scratching patterns.

c.

Non-race day trialling in hot weather: Clause 37 has been added to provide clubs with clarity of expectations for trialling sessions on days between 32 and 37.9°C.

TRANSPORT POLICY CHANGES While air-conditioning of transport vehicles is mandatory during hot weather affected journeys, GRV has received feedback that some participants do not operate their airconditioning systems while driving due to the mistaken belief that it is illegal to operate a petrol-powered generator during transport. This misconception has been addressed by adding additional wording to clause 15. Clause 16 has also been amended, to reduce the maximum internal temperature of a transport vehicle from 32°C to 30°C, and that to achieve this the air-conditioning will, in most cases, need to be turned on at least 30 minutes before greyhounds are placed in the vehicle or trailer.

Hot weather and fire season planning Summer is rapidly approaching. 2020 has seen a La Nina weather pattern during spring, bringing heavy rain and warm temperatures. This will produce a lot of vegetation and ultimately fuel load, so participants will need to begin to prepare for fire season. Now is the time to get your fire plans in order and avoid leaving things until the last minute. Start getting your property ready: ■

Prepare or review your fire plan, including evacuation options; if you choose to take your greyhounds with you, contact your local Municipal Council to find out which of their evacuation centres will allow animals and add the address and details to your plan.

Ensure lawns are kept short and regularly slash long grass in surrounding paddocks, yards, kennel blocks and alongside slipping tracks etc.

On bigger properties, a clearing of about 10 metres of well-mown grass around your home and kennel block is advisable.

Remove piles of fine fuels such as leaves, as it will probably be where embers will land and cause spot fires.

Empty gutters of leaves on your home, kennels and other buildings.

Make sure trees on your property are healthy, ideally trimmed to 2 metres above the ground, with no dead limbs and no vegetation underneath them.

Ensure your insurance is sufficient and current.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA OCTOBER 2020 19

To assist participants with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au. All sessions for the next 2 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■

have a current C5 vaccination as per the specific GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS described on this page given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and

not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Racing Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org. au/retirement-from-racing.

Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements, please contact GRV.

Participants may be asked to provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. Note: there in no fee for greyhounds being entered into GAP. The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

Bendigo Greyhound Racing Club Manager Profile Troy Harley Troy Harley, our Bendigo Club Manager, was born and raised in Maitland, in the Hunter Valley of NSW. His love for the racing industry started in high school, working at race meetings in all three codes. When it was time to leave school, Troy continued his passion for racing, taking a job at the Newcastle Jockey Club. He’s since held various positions in greyhound and thoroughbred organisations in NSW before seeing the greener pastures and moving to Victoria 10 years ago. Troy spent a year as the club Manager at Warragul, followed by a dual role as Manager at Bendigo and Shepparton for two years, followed by another dual role as manager Bendigo and GRV’s club projects and operations co-ordinator before focusing solely on the Bendigo role. He’s never been shy for the media, holding various roles including stints on ‘The Catching Pen’, as well as hosting radio sports shows, thoroughbred and greyhound hosting and form analysis for Sky. Troy also contributes racing stories for various print and online media outlets and recently hosted, directed, and produced the very successful online 2020 COVID Bendigo Cup. Another passion is Greyhound Clubs Victoria (GCV) where he currently sits on the executive and makes valuable contributions as well as Greyhound Clubs Australia as a GCV delegate and member of several national sub-committees. Troy has worked with dogs and horses from a young age and currently has a property just out of Bendigo where he breeds, rears, pretrains and trains dogs with his very patient wife Belinda and two girls Kaylene and Jessica.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA OCTOBER 2020

History, with Neil Brown When remembering different things from different tracks the most famous maiden winner often comes up. In Bendigo’s case their most famous is surely Hall of Famer Highly Blessed. Now they have had a few topliners win their maiden at Bendigo. Eaglehawk Star for one and another Australian Cup winner Franklin Deano. Barry Hiscock also informed me the 1973 Australian Cup winner Half Your Luck won his maiden at the old Eaglehawk track after coursing in the afternoon at Tatura. I know plenty about the maiden won by the mighty Highly Blessed because I ran second to her two weeks in a row. Firstly, in a semi-final of the maiden series with Camona Black then in the final with his sister Camona Lady. In fact, in the semi's Camona Lady ran best of the night 25.12. Highly Blessed 25.20. The final of the Southern Cross Network Maiden Thousand was Monday the 16th of October 1989. Over 430 metres my two dogs had boxes one and two and the champ was in three. Camona Lady led for most of the way with her brother in second place both to be run down late by Highly Blessed in 24.85 winning by three and half lengths. She went on to become a superstar, one of the best of all time.
