As we move into 2021, I hope we can look forward to a year with significantly less challenges than in 2020. Nevertheless, we are prepared if such challenges do arise. For the moment I am pleased to note that wagering turnover on Victorian greyhound racing has continued to grow at unprecedented levels. During the second half of 2020, total domestic turnover on Victorian greyhounds, with all wagering operators, grew by more than 50% and total annual turnover is now expected to exceed $3.2 billion. A significant proportion of this growth comes from Corporate bookmakers. Victoria’s ability to offer consistent, trusted and exciting greyhound racing has attracted many new people to the sport and even as other wagering opportunities open up again, they are sticking with the code. Wagering turnover has also been boosted by an expanded racing calendar with an additional 69 meetings and 796 extra races up to January 15 this year. This has also created new earning opportunities for trainers and owners and more starts for dogs at all levels. The increased revenue from this remarkable boost in wagering will flow into higher prizemoney and other returns for participants and investment in new racing infrastructure that will provide a safer working environment for the greyhounds and better experiences for audiences at the track. You will be seeing lot of progress on these issues over the coming year. I must remind you though that while things are returning to normal, it is still very important that we all continue to follow healthcare directives and these may vary from club to club depending on the size of their indoor facilities. So please check with your club first if you are planning to attend race meetings.
And if you are travelling interstate and returning, please check the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website to ensure you comply with the Victorian Government’s current rules regarding interstate travel under the new traffic light system. We have done a fantastic job of keeping our sport safe and healthy so far and let’s keep it that way.
CEO’S UPDATE
CEO’s Update
Finally I’d just like to mention some issues which we need to be aware of at the moment. There appears to be an increase in the number of greyhounds with symptoms of Kennel Cough being reported to vets over the past week and reports that it is spreading in the broader dog population. Symptoms have been relatively mild and short-lived but we shouldn’t take any chances. Any greyhound which may have Kennel Cough or been exposed to a greyhound with Kennel Cough, must be scratched from any races and trials and withdrawn from communal training facilities and GAP intakes. And a reminder too that GRV’s Hot Weather Policy is in force and applies to both club and post-race trials on hot weather affected days. So please check if you haven’t already, details of the policy and the related Transport policy at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/policies-and-guidance. We had quite a year in 2020 but I am confident that in 2021 we can get back to focussing on what we do best, which is delivering the best greyhound racing in the world.

AUS CUP TILT ON THE CARDS FOR WA STAR EVERY sport needs a hero, and at the moment, Tommy Shelby is that hero for greyhound racing. “The whole thing has actually been really bizarre for me,” says Tommy Shelby’s Western Australian trainer Steve Withers. PHOTO: CLINT ANDERSON
“It’s so much easier to just stay in my own little bubble with Tommy, looking after him and staying close to him, but every now and then, I think to myself, ‘this is out of control’. People want selfies with Tommy after his races. He’s become a selfie dog! “It’s definitely not me; I do the same stuff with other dogs, but they’re slower and get beaten!” The people’s champion from Western Australia has developed a cult following since his racing career began at the end of 2019. He won on debut at Cannington in 29.94, which prompted Withers to celebrate in a unique way. “We punted him on debut, and we had a holiday booked in Bali. My brother-in-law is a big tattoo man, and he was booked in to get a tattoo when we were over there. “I just sat down and said, ‘how about slapping this on my arm’? It’s a tattoo of Tommy Shelby, the character from the Netflix series ‘Peaky Blinders’, and a tattoo of the greyhound. That was after his first start, so it’s just as well things have turned out so well, or it could have been very different!”
Since his debut victory, Tommy Shelby has gone on to win the Group 3 Sky Racing Perth Cup Consolation, and finish fifth in the Group 2 Brittons Formal Wear West Australian Derby, second in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Vic Peters Final, third in the TAB Million Dollar Chase, fourth in the Group 1 TAB Topgun, and third in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup. In many of those races, Tommy Shelby didn’t get the rub of the green, but still tried tenaciously right to the line. “He always tries really hard. He’s not the fastest dog in the country – we can’t claim that – but he definitely has a very good motor and tries his little heart out, which creates lots of opportunities for him,” says Withers. In December last year came the Group 1 breakthrough when he won the Ladbrokes Hobart Thousand, beating home Tiggerlong Tonk by three lengths in 25.55. “It was a relief more than anything after he got the Group 1 win, especially as we faced a lot of hurdles on that Hobart trip. We had been starting to think, ‘are you ever going to win one, are we just a jinx?!’” Withers laughs. Withers and Tommy Shelby are currently based in Queensland to compete in the Golden Ticket and Gold Bullion series at Albion Park, but an attack on the Australian Cup could be next on the agenda for the son of Fernando Bale and Serena Fly High. He’s been desperately unlucky in his two starts at The Meadows to date: firstly when he finished fourth in the TAB Topgun in November behind Shima Shine, and then a week later when he collided and nearly fell on the home turn.
“Ideally, I’d travel back with him – he probably won’t race unless someone from the team is there with him, and we are so lucky to have wonderful people to stay with wherever we go.
You only get once chance at a ride like this, so we’ll try and take the ride with him if we can.” Since August, Tommy Shelby’s owners (Withers along with his wife Kira, and their friends Michael and Jodie Harders) have been donating 10 percent of their ownership earnings to a different charity every month. As a result, thousands of dollars has already been donated across a range of charities, including Beyond Blue, Movember, Telethon, Bushfire Volunteers WA, and Dolly’s Dream. The charity aspect is yet another reason why Tommy Shelby has developed such an enormous fan-base, as evidence by his ever-growing social media following. Tommy Shelby’s personality has also captured the hearts of greyhound aficionados. “He’s our baby. He demands attention off people wherever he goes, and is easily mistaken for a pet dog. He looks at people and says, ‘I’m here, pat me’. “He’s so easy to love. He’s the laziest, coolest, relaxed customer until he knows it’s race day, and then he flicks a switch and becomes a machine, and he fearlessly chases when he hits the racetrack. “He’s not everybody’s hero, but he’s definitely mine.”
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA FEBRUARY 2021
“We’d love to go back to Melbourne and try our luck down there. Hopefully his fitness holds up and he can recapture his best, because the dogs are elite down there and there’s no room to be anything but his best. Hopefully he peaks in the next week or two, and then we can try our luck back down in Mexico.

PORK SET TO CRACKLE
NOTHING could make more sense than charismatic conditioner Anthony Azzopardi targeting this year’s Australian Cup with a dog named Einsteinium. Einstein, you see, was the masterful mind behind the concept that time is far more flexible than previously conceived. In layman’s terms, a minute is never just a minute, a day is never just a day, and in the case of 2020, a year is never just a year. Twelve months ago, for those with pre-pandemic memories, Azzopardi tore through the Australian Cup carnival like an unrestrained hurricane. His reign of terror started on night one when Whiskey Riot won the Temlee and Just Terms took the Zoom Top and ended with Fernando’s Riot racing his way to Australian Cup glory. Given the extraordinary developments which followed soon after that carnival, the successes Azzopardi enjoyed last year seem much more distant than might otherwise be the case. But a large part of Azzopardi’s charm emanates from his boundless optimism and positivity; traits which have helped him through the COVID-19 crisis and kept the pandemic in perspective. “I know it’s been a long year for a lot of people and we’ve had some bumps in the road but I’m still buzzing from what happened at this carnival last year; for me it feels like yesterday,” Azzopardi said.
“Sometimes everything falls perfectly into place; we had the right dogs at the right age that were flying at the time and it was a dream-come-true if I’m being honest. PHOTO: JASON MCKEOWN
“That being said I’m always looking forward and I want the next big thrill, hopefully at The Meadows very soon.” Unlike last year, the Rowsley-based trainer won’t be targeting almost every feature of The Meadows’ most important carnival with a wildly powerful team. He will, however, be eyeing off a second straight Australian Cup title with two very different dogs. The previously referenced Einsteinium is fresh fodder; a brilliant sprinter with marginal experience but teeming with talent.
The more menacing of his Aus Cup combatants is veteran warrior Short Pork. Despite having gone unplaced in three Group-class contests to date, Short Pork has two major facets in his favour. One is his outrageous consistency, the other his proven capacity to tackle and tame the finest greyhounds in Australia. “I might be kidding myself but I really think he (Short Pork) can beat anybody when he draws the right box and he begins as fast as he can,” Azzopardi said. “I’ve tried everything to make him more foolproof at box-rise but he gets a little edgy at times and just makes life hard for himself. “When he does do it all right he’s beaten some bloody good dogs though; he’s rolled Simon Told Helen before and done it on his merits, not because the other one was checked, just because he was better on the night.” With his natural, magnetic enthusiasm it’s easy to get swept away when Azzopardi exudes the excitement he does about Short Pork approaching the Aus Cup series.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA FEBRUARY 2021
With the doubts around his capacity to chase a strong 525m and his lack of elite racing he’s the less likely of Azzopardi’s two-pronged team to seriously threaten through the series.
That ‘crackle’ in his voice just seems to suck you in.

2020 National Coursing Awards
BY VICTORIA SHAW
The National Coursing Association of Victoria staged their annual awards at Sandown Park for the year 2020, on January 21. And, despite several turbulent times, coursing continues to deliver a vital component to the preparation of racing greyhounds, for both industry participants, and their animals alike. As the broadcaster for several coursing meetings, including the 2020 Waterloo Cup at Lang Lang, I had the great fortune to witness many wonderful achievements during the season, and catch up with some of the delighted award winners as well. The 2020 Coursing Award winners are:
2020 COURSING GREYHOUND OF THE YEAR – MAKING GRAVY (27points) (Black Bear Lee x Bit Classy) Bred by Vicki Prest and trained by Adele Powell. Making Gravy completed a dream debut season winning the 2020 Waterloo Cup. Beginning the season with a win in the Slip to Boxes at Longwood before his only defeat in a one-win limit event at Longwood. Once he saw the drag lure at Lang Lang, which according to Adele Powell “he was brought up with”, Making Gravy went to another level. Winning an All-Aged Event on August 16, before beating a very classy field to win the Waterloo Cup, two weeks later.
Making Gravy, coursing greyhound of the year.
2020 COURSING BITCH OF THE YEAR – JULANA & GOTHAM PRINCESS (16 points) In an even year for the girls, we saw a rare tie for Bitch of the Year between Julana and Gotham Princess. Julana (Dyna Double One x Chelabella) bred by Robyn Massina and trained by Dallas Masina won a Maiden and a One Win Limit event at Longwood before taking out the Karen Leek Memorial feature for veteran greyhounds on the Waterloo Cup weekend. Gotham Princess (Walk Hard x Gotham Queen) began the year by winning the Larmax Trading Puppy Event at Lang Lang before continuing her love affair with Lang Lang by taking out the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Classic.

The SMKN Syndicate includes Sean and Melanie Lithgow, Kerryn Maynes, Denise Maynes and Nicole Riseley. In addition to having had the incredible experience of owning former star coursing bitch Gotham Queen, the syndicate have watched the run of success continue with the next generation. Gotham Queen’s litter to Walk Hard, produced this year’s Derby winner – Dream Wizard and the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Classic winner, Gotham Princess. Upon accepting the award for the SMKN Syndicate, Kerryn Maynes said “It is an amazing award that is just indicative of the training methods of Sean and Melanie Lithgow.” “They have done so much, and they care for their dogs, so the members of the syndicate are very proud to receive this award.” “Particularly so in a year struck by Covid-19.” “The volunteers and the association have kept coursing going, in the most challenging circumstances and coursing is growing thanks to their efforts.” “I love coursing and am very proud to receive this award.” Kerryn Maynes on behalf of the SMKN Syndicate.
2020 TRAINER OF THE YEAR – JOHN BOSNICH & BRIAN FOTHERGILL (15 points) Testimony to a being a very even year, another tie with Brian the “King of Coursing” as he is affectionately known, having a very strong year with Tigerfish Fozz and Barracuda Fozz leading the way as well as great assistance from Brian’s daughter – Sarah making sure all their greyhounds looked a ‘million dollars’!
2020 NOEL BANKS MEDALLIST – SUE DELANEY The Coveted Noel Banks Medal is an award for outstanding and continuous volunteer service to the coursing industry and longstanding coursing devotee, Sue Delaney is truly a worthy recipient. Sue’s efforts have contributed to the continuation of coursing, not only in one of the most difficult years in Australian sport (thanks to the current pandemic), but also ensuring the sport’s ongoing future as well. In summary, the 2020 Victorian greyhound coursing season was a roaring success, irrespective of unforeseen difficulties that continue to affect the entire world. Full credit and sincere thanks to the NCAV Executive and Committee, all volunteers, clubs and sponsors who continue to support and ensure greyhound coursing in our state, is more than the very foundation of our modern-day sport, but a key part of greyhound racing’s future as well. As we look ahead to the next coursing season with great anticipation, some insightful comments below, for those of you that have not had the opportunity to experience the impact that coursing can have on racing greyhounds at any level. Sean Lithgow, trainer of Dream Wizard who has now contested two Group 2 events after the 2020 coursing season added “Coursing has been essential.” “Dream Wizard has always been very talented but lacked a little bit in his ability to focus.” “We have done some re-education work with Dream Wizard at Rising Star Kennels, as well as coursing which really switched him on.” “He did get used to being bumped around a little bit and that helped him build his confidence to run through a field and now he is matching it with the big guns, and he feels he is at home with them.” “We can really thank coursing in part for the improvement that we have seen in him.”
BEST FIRST YEAR COURSING TRAINER FOR 2020 – Aaron Campbell (6 points) Aaron Campbell had an impressive debut season under the tutelage of Gerry O’Keeffe. Led by his eye-catching speedster – Zipping Atticus, Aaron’s team were super competitive with some great support from his 14-year-old daughter Elloise, and they will certainly be back coursing next season. Aaron was truly moved by his award and added “Winning the award means a lot to me, and as well the recognition of having a bit of success.” “Getting some positive feedback is always a fantastic reward for effort.” “I am looking forward

to the upcoming season and will bring back Zipping Atticus for another campaign at the Waterloo Cup if he is sound.” “I have also picked up a lovely dog from David Geall – Morticia.” “She is a little bit quirky in her circle track racing where she runs wide into the straight, so I think the format of coursing will benefit her a lot, she has a fair bit of pace early so I would anticipate her to be very competitive.”

Staying king’s new ‘castle’ BY PETER QUILTY
The red carpet has been rolled out for distance monarch Tornado Tears in retirement! And he has moved into lodgings ‘fit for a staying king’. The six-time Group 1 winner is receiving VIP treatment at his new ‘castle’ – the Doveton home of Jason and Penny Ireland. And he’s wasting no time ‘ruling the roost’! Jason has been assisting Tornado Tears’ trainer, Rob Britton, handling greyhounds at Sandown race meetings on Thursday nights and Sundays and occasionally The Meadows on Saturday nights for around 10 years. “We got a call ‘out of the blue’ from Rob and he asked, ‘do you have room for a retired greyhound?’,” Penny said. “It didn’t sink in at first, but we had no hesitation in saying yes. When we found out who it was, it was such a privilege.” Tornado Tears is being treated like a ‘superhero’ but is not the only one living the ‘life of Riley’ at the Ireland residence. “He’s settled in fantastic… He’s a part of the family and the three greyhounds are best mates,” Penny said. “As soon as he arrived, we let him go in the backyard and he explored everything. A little later we couldn’t find him, but there he was stretched out and sound asleep on our bed.”
12
Jason and Penny Ireland with ‘King Batman’ in his new castle
Penny said “Batman” has his own sleeping quarters at the foot of their bed. “He’s extremely intelligent; he comes and ‘tells us’ when he wants to go to bed.” “They all have their own special biscuit container with dog treats and when you shake the tins, they all come running – and he’s usually the first now,” she added. The Irelands daughter, Savannah, 15, just adores Tornado Tears. “She followed his race career and loved him from his first start… And she went to most of his city races,” Penny said. “When we told Savannah that we were getting him as a pet, she almost cried with excitement.” “On the first day “Batman” arrived, Jason came home with three cheeseburgers and a 10-pack of nuggets… No prizes for guessing, but Jason only got one nugget.” Penny added that Tornado Tears has a pink tennis ball that he loves. “You throw it, he chases and brings it back, and drops it at your feet.” And Penny says their new ‘star boarder’ follows her husband everywhere. “He gets so excited when Jason comes home… He’s his shadow,” she said. “The day after he arrived, Jason had to work at Sandown. ‘Batman’ stuck his head out of the bedroom window to watch him leave, and it’s become a ritual ever since.” “I’m always first out of bed and as soon as I get up, he’s up on the bed with Jason,” Penny said. “He’s very cheeky and funny… He’s got a home for life.”

Simon Told Helen with trainer David Burnett and Brian Parsons of the Emma’s Boys Syndicate
‘Simon’ says it’s all over! Superstar Simon Told Helen has retired to stud at Meticulous Lodge. He will stand for a starting price of $2,500 and be available shortly.
Trained by David Burnett, the contemporary sprinting champion started 47 times for 26 wins, 13 seconds and one third. His stakes total $916,441 – placing him eighth on Greyhound Clubs Australia’s ‘Top Prizemoney Earners’ list. Simon Told Helen’s G1 ‘fab four’ are the Silver Chief, Perth Cup, Harrison-Dawson and Maturity Classic. And he also won the G2 Geelong Gold Cup – all of these in 2020. And last year, he was runner-up in the G1 Topgun, G1 Melbourne Cup, G1 Dapto Megastar, G2 Warrnambool Cup and G3 Silver Bullet. He was also a finalist in the G1 Temlee and G1 Brisbane Cup. In 2019, Simon Told Helen won the G2 Queensland Derby, G3 Cup Night Sprint and G3 Great Chase (defeating his illfated litter brother, Who Told Stevie). He was also runner-up in the G3 Silver Bullet.
“He has been a super star on the track and to have achieved all of this before the age of three is an incredible feat,” Paul Westerveld said. With many greyhound fans quick to compare him to the great Fernando Bale, the Westerveld and the Emma’s Boys Syndicate have every right to be quietly confident. “We can only hope that Simon Told Helens stud career is as successful as his racing career. We have already received plenty of inquiries which is promising for the future.” Owned and bred by the Emma’s Boys syndicate, managed by Brian Parsons, Simon Told Helen (Jan ’18 Barcia Bale x Who Told Lindylu) was also crowned the 2019/20 Australian Greyhound of the Year. ‘Brownie’ calls it a day They say, ‘all good things must come to an end’ and that is unfortunately the case with one of the Sale and District Greyhound Racing Clubs most loyal servants in Geoff Brown. “Brownie” as he is affectionately known within the industry first walked out onto the Sale track in 1980 (about the same time as Blondie had the number one hit “Call Me” and you could grab a cheeseburger from McDonalds for 35 cents). A much-respected person by participants due to his humble nature, his loyalty and reliability have been appreciated by all at his home track of Sale. A gentleman to the end, and wanting to leave without fanfare, Brownie signed off for the last time on Sunday the 10th of January 2021. So after more than 40 years, Sundays will now be spent with his family, his feet up, the possibility of a cold beer in hand and the races on the tv. The club will have a race in his honour, and he will be given a small gift from the club, as he enjoys a meal with Mrs Brown at the club as part of the “no fanfare” he requested….so please don’t tell him!! Geoff Brown signs off for the final time

Requirements regarding the location and status of greyhounds The welfare of greyhounds and integrity of our sport is something GRV takes extremely seriously, and every participant has an important role to play in this space. GRV would like to remind all Victorian participants that they are required to keep their FastTrack records up to date, particularly with regards to the location and status of any greyhound in their care. You may be contacted by the Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit (GRIU) in relation to updating your records. Please note that there are Rules and Legislative requirements that must be adhered to. Although penalties could apply for noncompliance, it is the GRIU’s preference to educate and assist participants in meeting these requirements. Please ensure your own contact details on FastTrack are up to date and includes a mobile phone and email address. Here are a few helpful tips to ensure participants meet their requirements: ■ If a greyhound is in your care and custody you must submit a kennel return, choose the greyhound's activity and update any changes as they occur. ■
Prior to the burial of a deceased greyhound due to natural causes, accident or misadventure, the owner or person responsible for the greyhound must notify GRV within two (2) working days. If the greyhound is taken to the Veterinarian a death certificate is required
■
Where a greyhound has been euthanased the owner or person responsible for the greyhound must notify GRV within two (2) working days and in compliance with the euthanasia rules. A euthanasia certificate is reqired by GRV.
■
When a greyhound is retired as a pet, FastTrack must also be updated with regards to the greyhound’s status, as well as the name, phone number and address (and preferably email address as well) of the third-party owner, as well as the new owner’s alternate contact (name and phone number).
Owners must get involved in the rehoming process and not delegate responsibilities to trainers unless by documented agreement. All participants are encouraged to read the following Greyhounds Australasia Rules (GAR) and requirements under the ‘Code Of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds’:

Why we need disease surveillance
Victorian Point of Consumption Tax Review
Disease surveillance is integral to reducing the risks associated with infectious disease outbreaks, including kennel cough and gastroenteritis. Understanding the rate of disease occurrence and how these outbreaks spread among the greyhound population is crucial to making sound evidence-based decisions with regards to disease management.
The Victorian Racing Industry (VRI), comprising Racing Victoria (RV), Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) and Harness Racing Victoria (HRV), has welcomed the Victorian Government’s decision to increase the Point of Consumption Tax (POCT) pass-through to the VRI in connection with an impending increase to the POCT rate.
Surveillance can be described as a continuous and systematic process of data collection. This information gives us an idea of the disease status of the greyhound population. Available data is collated and analysed to guide decision making. Veterinary surveillance systems enable GRV and other regulators to identify appropriate actions that should be taken to protect both animal and human health, and lead to a better understanding of diseases that might impact the industry.
SUCCESSFUL CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE OUTBREAKS ENABLES US TO MINIMISE ANY HEALTH AND WELFARE IMPACTS FOR GREYHOUNDS AS WELL AS ANY EMOTIONAL AND FINANCIAL IMPACTS FOR PARTICIPANTS. There are two main types of disease surveillance: active and passive. Passive surveillance involves using information that has already been gathered e.g. participant reports of disease occurrence in their kennels. Active surveillance requires going out and seeking further information e.g. random testing of greyhounds. Other means of disease surveillance could include GRV investigating illness-related scratchings or fluctuations in nomination numbers, or using private veterinary reports following consultation and diagnostic laboratory testing. Diagnostic testing is a principle means of disease surveillance as it confirms exactly what infectious agent is responsible for causing or contributing to the observed clinical symptoms. Knowing the cause of disease gives us information about how likely it is to spread, how it can be treated and how it can best be managed. The most appropriate diagnostic test will depend on the disease. For example, testing for gastroenteritis will usually require a faecal sample while testing for kennel cough will usually require a nasal or throat swab. These tests should always be conducted by a veterinarian who will either analyse the sample in-house (generally limited tests) or submit it to the laboratory (generally more comprehensive tests). Sometimes blood samples can also be useful to help determine whether your greyhound has antibodies to certain infectious agents; this gives an indication of previous or current infection.
18
Voluntary reporting is essential to an effective disease surveillance programme, thereby improving the health and welfare of greyhounds, and protecting the health and livelihoods of all the people in the industry. To contribute to passive surveillance, if you are concerned about any symptoms of infectious disease in your greyhounds, speak to your veterinarian and report the information to GRV Veterinary Services at vets@grv.org.au or on (03) 8329 1100.
The Victorian Government has today announced that following the passage of legislation, effective from 1 July 2021, the POCT on wagering by Victorian residents will increase from 8% to 10% of Net Wagering Revenue (NWR), bringing it into line with the POCT rate currently in place in New South Wales. The Government has also announced that the VRI’s gross share of POCT receipts from wagering will be increased from 1.5% to 3.5% of taxable NWR. However, on a net basis, after the deduction of the VRI’s ‘make-whole’ obligation under the remaining term of the current Victorian wagering and betting license, the VRI expects to retain at least 1.7% of taxable NWR under the new POCT arrangements. This is comparable with the NSW racing industry which receives the full 2% industry share of taxable NWR in addition to other favourable wagering taxation arrangements. Subject to the passage of legislation, the new POCT arrangements are expected to increase the VRI’s net receipts from the POCT by around $20 million per annum from 202122, as compared to the VRI’s expected net receipts under current POCT arrangements. When introducing the POCT, the Victorian Government committed to the three codes of the VRI that they would be no worse off both individually and collectively under the new tax regime. The Victorian Government has also committed to maintaining the national pre-eminence of the VRI and its competitiveness against interstate racing. The increase in the VRI’s share of POCT is an important step in closing the gap and addressing the relative Government funding differences between Victoria and New South Wales. Current favourable Government funding arrangements in New South Wales are enabling it to aggressively chase wagering market share and participation from Victoria, thus impacting industry funding, events and tourism. This increase in funding will assist the industry to fund its operations and support jobs across the state, and also to continue to maintain its investments in prizemoney, important animal and participant welfare initiatives, and the development and maintenance of world-class racing and training facilities and infrastructure. The VRI is one of Victoria’s most significant industries and makes a substantial contribution to jobs, communities and the state economy. It delivers $4.34 billion in economic value each year – around half of this in regional Victoria – and supports over 34,000 full-time equivalent jobs. GRV Chair Peita Duncan welcomed the planned changes to the POCT revenue sharing arrangements with the VRI.
“GRV’s share of this increase is expected to equate to around $3.5 million in additional revenue in the 2021-22 financial year. “Increasing returns to our participants is a priority for us going forward, as is safe racing with new and upgraded tracks to provide safe workplaces for our dogs, modernising the way we, and our clubs, do business, and of course protecting the ongoing integrity of our sport. We expect prizemoney returns to participants to be more than $51 million in 20-21 and we will boost that as much as we can in coming years off the back of any increase in revenue. We thank the Victorian Government for their ongoing support to our industry.”
Scam alert regarding exporting of greyhounds
LATEST NEWS
“These arrangements will assist in ensuring Victorian greyhound racing continues to be the premium greyhound racing jurisdiction in the world. This will assist us to continue to increase prizemoney to our participants, as well as allowing us to further invest in animal welfare and safe racing initiatives,” Ms Duncan said.
Greyhound participants are advised to be alert to any approach from people outside of Australia using Facebook or other social media to encourage owners and trainers to sell their racing and retired greyhounds. It has been reported that some of these people are not genuine and intend to move greyhounds to unregulated countries to create adverse media about the industry. If you are unsure of your obligations regarding the exporting of greyhounds refer to Local Rule 53 located within GRV’s Local Racing Rules or seek advice from GRV’s Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit (GRIU). To report any suspicious activity please call the investigations hotline on 1300 856 109 – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT
BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING
VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination and ensure your Kennel Cough vaccine is up to date. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.
Transport Policy and hot weather GRV would like to remind all participants of three key aspects of the Transport Policy that there is some misunderstanding about: 1.
The Transport Policy is independent of the Hot Weather Policy (that governs race meetings).
2.
The Transport Policy applies to transporting greyhounds anytime and anywhere and not just to and from race meetings; it covers transport to trials, other participant’s properties, GAP sessions, veterinary visits and anywhere else for any reason.
3.
Under the Transport Policy, air-conditioning in the vehicle and/or trailer is mandatory for any journey that is determined to be hot weather affected.
A Hot Weather Affected journey is defined as the entire journey where, at any point along the intended route, the forecasted maximum temperature is 32°C or higher at any time on the day of the journey. Using a simple example, if you live in Horsham and are trialling at Ballarat, and the temperature at Ballarat and/or Horsham is forecast to reach 35°C at sometime that day, then any travel to and from Ballarat at any time that day will require greyhounds to be transported in an air-conditioned vehicle/trailer. This is even if it is early morning and the temperature is only 25°C. The policy is written that way to protect the welfare of the greyhounds in cases where transportation might get delayed and makes the policy simple to understand.

Rehabilitation Grant now part of Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI) funding From 1 December 2020, all greyhounds who suffer a GRIeligible injury will be eligible for up to $500 Rehabilitation Grant in addition to $2,000 for veterinary costs. It is paid directly to the participant to support recovery from the injury (but can also be used for additional veterinary costs) but the participant must apply for it using Part C of the GRI Admission Form. Without this paperwork, GRV cannot pay you the grant. If your greyhound has been injured ontrack and you have been referred to the GRI, please make sure you complete Part C of the GRI form to claim your Rehabilitation Grant payment, and this must be returned with Part B that the off-track veterinarian has signed. For more information on the scheme, please visit https:// greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/greyhound-recovery-initiative/.
Kennel Cough January has seen several reports of coughing dogs and some Kennel Cough scratchings with a mild husky cough. The 2017 outbreak had devastating effects on race fields, GAP intakes and on greyhound welfare, so it is critical that we limit any Kennel Cough infections now to prevent this occurring again. Please be vigilant, seek veterinary advice if you notice coughing dogs and contact GRV so we are aware of what is happening in the industry. Good hygiene and biosecurity practices are vital to limiting spread and impact of any infectious disease. Any greyhound that has Kennel Cough or has been exposed to Kennel Cough, MUST be scratched from any races it is nominated for, and not trialled or taken to other communal training facilities or GAP. Most importantly, under the Code of Practice all greyhounds must have a current C5 vaccine, which means a yearly Kennel Cough vaccination (with the C3 component every 1-3 years), in line with EHMP requirements and veterinary
On-Track Euthanasia GRV and all Clubs are working very hard on improving the safety of racing and the serious raceday injury of a greyhound is very stressful for the greyhound, its owner/ trainer and GRV officials. GRV funds the Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI) up to the value of $2,500 per greyhound seriously injured during a race-meeting or post-race trialing event with the aim of providing every greyhound with the best chance of a life after racing. Recently, GRV has been working with On-Track Veterinarians (OTVs) to achieve a very clear understanding that euthanasia on-track is only acceptable when the OTV can certify the greyhound was “suffering from a Catastrophic Injury or Catastrophic Medical Condition” and they considered “the most appropriate course of action to be immediate euthanasia on humane grounds”. The OTV always places the welfare of the greyhound first in any decision they make. Where the extent of the injury, or precise diagnosis, is unclear, the OTV will refer the greyhound for off-track veterinary follow-up, usually the same day or next day. The initial veterinary consultation, x-rays and immediate treatment in these cases will always be 100% funded by the GRI (as part of the $2,500), regardless of the diagnosis and treatment options.
Surrendering greyhounds to a pound
If a participant is considering surrendering a greyhound to a shelter (i.e. not a volunteer re-homing group) they must check with the shelter and their local council to determine if that shelter is acting as the pound to their municipality; if it is, then surrendering a greyhound in that manner will be a breach of the Code. If in doubt, the participant can contact the GRV Retirements team for advice. Many of the surrendered greyhounds have not attended a GAP pre-entry assessment, and current waiting times to get greyhounds into GAP are unusually short. If participants do not have a new owner lined up for their greyhound, GAP can be their first re-homing option ahead of other volunteer rehoming groups. The best way to ensure your greyhound has the easiest transition to retirement is to ensure your greyhound is well socialised with people and other breeds of dogs. For
Returning to school and work during hot weather Every year the return to school and work coincides with the hottest part of the year. While some participants work from home, there are some who are unable to do so and their greyhounds may be left for longer periods of time in the heat. On warm and hot days, ensure your greyhounds: ■
have ready access to lots of cool drinking water in non-spillable containers;
■
have access to shade at all times when outside;
■
have good air flow through kennel buildings and/or well insulated buildings;
■
have covered or shaded concrete walkways to prevent burning of pads when walking greyhounds around properties/race tracks;
■
have access to air-conditioned transport and ensure t he internal transport vehicle temperature is below 30°c at all times dogs are inside it;
■
are monitored regularly.
You can also provide additional relief from the heat by: ■
freezing treats, dog biscuits, or bones in 2-4L containers – the frozen block will keep your greyhound cool and hydrated as they work to access the treat frozen in the middle;
■
place sprinklers at various positions around outdoor yards/paddocks and set them to run on timers for short bursts during the hottest part of the day to allow the greyhounds to cool themselves; and
■
place small pools of water into outdoor yards and, where there is space to do so, indoor kennels big enough to allow the greyhound to stand in – plastic childrens’ shell pools are ideal for this, but large tubs will work also.
GRV has some greyhound resources on managing greyhounds in hot weather and what the signs for heat stress are: https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/health-and-well-being/ heat-stress-heat-stroke/#keepingcool https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/hot-weather/ https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/wp-content/ uploads/2020/09/Hot-Weather-Policy-Sep-2020-Boardapproved.pdf
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA FEBRUARY 2021
Recently, GRV has seen an increase in greyhounds being surrendered to a pound instead of being re-homed. Surrendering a greyhound to a pound is a breach of the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds (Code). However, GRV understands that sometimes participants believe they are surrendering their greyhound to a shelter, not realising it is also the contracted pound service for the local council.

To assist participants with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au. All sessions for the next 2 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■
have a current C5 vaccination as per the specific GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS described on this page given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and
■
not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Racing Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org. au/retirement-from-racing.
Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au
GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements, please contact GRV.
Participants may be asked to provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. Note: there in no fee for greyhounds being entered into GAP. The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

Geelong Greyhound Racing Club Manager Profile: Ray Bartolo Ray might be new to the General Manager's seat at the Geelong Greyhound Racing Club, but certainly not new to the industry. In the late 80s Ray's parents bought four pups from Stephen Kavanagh in NSW, and the rest is history. After completing High School, he studied Biological Science at University and went on to complete a PhD in Molecular Biology and Renal Physiology in 2007. During 2007 Ray moved to the Dunedin in New Zealand to continue his research career, working on genes associated with the disease Cystic Fibrosis (FC) using the brush-tailed possum as a model organism. Brush-tailed possums are a pest species in New Zealand and the lab where he worked was focussed on finding a drug to aid the treatment of CF. After moving back to Australia at the end of 2010, he started to train greyhounds while being a stay-at-home father to his son. However, when baby number two arrived he decided it was a good time to go back to work and started a research position at the Walter and Eliza Institute. The research was focused on a family of proteins that can either prevent, or promote, cells from dying and have role in a range of cancers. In 2014, Ray moved into paediatric leukemia research at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute were the Lab focussed on improving techniques to diagnose high risk paediatric cancers and precision medicine. Aa slight change of careers followed, with two years at AWM Electrical and Data Wholesalers in Port Melbourne learning lots about running a commercial business.Ray has a strong passion for the greyhound industry and has been a member of Geelong and Melbourne Greyhound Racing Club Boards, and the GRV board prior to taking up the General Manager position at Geelong towards the end of 2020. Ray has three children that all enjoy the greyhound industry, especially when they get the chance to be in a winning photo. . Welcome to the team, Ray.
Club history with Neil Brown Racing was first held in Geelong in 1936 at Nelson Park, near the Ocean Child Hotel, opposite the Melbourne Road in North Geelong. It was run and owned by two Nelson Brothers and races were held on Saturday afternoon. One of the brothers was Director, Handicapper, Steward (along with his brother), betting supervisor and starter, which gave the proprietary interests a significant influence over events at the Park. In fact, the Nelsons did everything as the other brother graded, handicapped and judged. Steve McKee still believes that the only money the Nelsons got was the entry fee from the gates. The greyhounds would run between two poles for a finish line where the placings would be called. There were no photo finishes in those days, just judging by the Nelson brothers. The prize money in those days was 4 pounds ($226) for a win, 1 pound ($56) for second and 15 shillings ($42) for third. On the opening night, the Geelong Advertiser reported; "A grand opening of the Nelson Park Olympia, the 'Sportsman's Paradise' on the Melbourne Road in North Geelong took place on the 9th of November 1937.”
The Geelong Advertiser also reported that "the amazing swiftness of the greyhounds and thrills associated with the midget car and motorcycle dirt track racing were presented to a huge crowd under ideal weather conditions, when the grand carnival opening of the Nelson Park Olympia at North Geelong was held last night." The meeting was successful beyond wildest expectations and it was announced that the official attendance figures were 21,000. A bus ran from the city to the ground on the opening night, which was to feature mass bands and a grand parade, greyhound racing, an exhibition of night trotting, professional running and other novelty events. The greyhound track was said to be the only one in the Commonwealth where the public had two views of the greyhounds during a race.
