Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone for their understanding during the recent five-day snap lockdown. It was very reassuring that all the clubs were able to quickly implement all needed lockdown protocols and keep racing. It is good to know we have this rapid response capability in place although hopefully we won’t need to use it again. GRV and the clubs/GCV are working through the complex details of getting everyone back on track and we are almost there. For example, it was heartening to see so many people trackside for the 2021 Australian Cup final at the Meadows last Saturday, cheering on a great run by Tommy Shelby. It was fabulous to have crowds back at the track too, albeit under COVIDsafe conditions. Something else we can look forward to this year is the new VicBred Pink Diamond series which will provide an additional $900,000 in prizemoney for Victorian-bred greyhounds of various ages and abilities. This new series is all about acknowledging and encouraging the vital role of our breeders in maintaining a strong pool of racing dogs for the sport’s long-term future. It will feature 48 heats across regional tracks culminating in 12 feature finals, some of which will offer $75,000 to the winner. All the heats will also carry a $1,000 VicGreys Bonus with 50 per cent going to the breeder and the showcase finals night will include more than $80,000 in breeder-only bonus payments. The inaugural Pink Diamond heats will be on 10-11 June at Shepparton, Warragul, Ballarat and Geelong with the finals at Bendigo on Friday 18 June and, in following years, the heats and finals will be rotated through all the other regional clubs. We also have the $1.1 million Phoenix - the world’s only Greyhound Slot Race - coming up in December at the Meadows and we have also announced plans to inject $900,000 into distance racing. So exciting times ahead. I am also pleased to see that wagering on Victorian greyhounds has continued to perform strongly with total turnover for January growing by a phenomenal 47% with an additional 12 meetings and 111 races conducted compared to January last year. We continue to see total turnover and average turnover per race growth across all days of the week, all venues and timeslots, with an unprecedented level of customers staying engaged with betting on Victorian greyhounds.

.In other news, I’d like to congratulate Brian Parkinson, John Hutchison and Steve Clarke on their appointments as Greyhound Clubs Victoria’s (GCV) Deputy Chair, Treasurer and executive Board Member respectively. GCV is a highly effective advocate for Victoria’s greyhound clubs and I look forward to continuing a very productive relationship with the new committee. I would also like to acknowledge the outgoing GCV Chair Adrian Scott for his great work in getting GCV up and running as one of the sport’s key stakeholders. Speaking of clubs, GRV has launched a $2 million Infrastructure package which is being rolled out over the first half of 2021. It is focused on water management and includes funding for new water carts, tractors and irrigation. All clubs will receive these new resources between now and the end of the financial year. This roll out will build on the major track renovations at Warrnambool, Shepparton, Geelong and Bendigo over December and January. Looking ahead, I am pleased to note that work on the new Traralgon track is now well underway and generating more than 200 jobs during the construction phase. There will be several Open Days in coming months so that participants and the general community can see at first hand the development of what will be one of the world’s most advanced greyhound tracks. At this stage it is on schedule to open for racing this October and I hope to see many of you there for the opening day and the start of an exciting new chapter for our sport in Gippsland. Finally, as Covid restrictions are being eased, GAP is very much back in business as the demand for greyhounds as pets continues. Many participants have been doing a great job of preparing their dogs for life after racing and if you have a dog you’re planning to retire, please start thinking about this now and about booking a GAP pre-entry assessment if needed. The more people who discover what wonderful dogs they are, the better for our sport.

Wow notched his 17th win from 26 starts – and registered his ninth straight win. It was Wow’s second G1 victory, having also won the Paws Of Thunder. He joined AGRA ‘Hall of Fame’ inductee Paua To Burn (2005) as the only NSW greyhounds to win a Temlee since the race’s inception in 2003.

How the race was won: Middle-distance revelation Fernando Cazz ($3.80F) sat second until hitting the lead halfway up the home straight and then holding off fastfinishing NSW star Cawborne Footrot ($10.40) by 1.26L, with Mepunga Isla ($3.90) a ‘whisker’ away third in 34.23sec. It was Fernando Cazz’s 10th win from 28 starts – and her fifth win from six starts since switching to middle-distance racing. Her 18-year-old trainer Kayla Cottrell snared her first Group 1 win and the Cottrell family made it back-to-back Rookie Rebels as her mum, Janet, won last year’s race with Perfect Marshall.

How the race was won: Lightning-fast Fernando Bluey exploded from Box 6 and pinched a 3-4L break heading down the back straight. But WA wonder Tommy Shelby (Box 4), who was midfield early, had moved into second and was in hot pursuit. Turning for home, Tommy Shelby ($2.80) ranged alongside Fernando Bluey ($4.30) and in a head-bobbing finish nabbed a 0.06L win. Lakeview Cruiser ($10.00) finished third, a further 3.1L away in 29.86sec. It was Tommy Shelby’s 27th win from 41 starts and his second G1, having won last year’s Hobart Thousand.

Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV)’s Chair, Peita Duncan, will once again be going up in Neil’s Wheel for The Royal Children’s Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal. From 8.30am onwards on Friday 12 March, Peita and other representatives of GRV and the sport won’t be able to escape from their cabin on Melbourne Star at Docklands until they’ve raised at least $5,000. So Peita and the greyhound gang will be calling all their contacts on the day to ask for donations to this very worthy cause. Over the past two years, Victoria’s greyhound community has raised around $50,000 through Neil’s Wheel for the Good Friday Appeal and looks forward to again supporting the great work of The Royal Children’s Hospital in 2021

Western Australian superstar Tommy Shelby reigned supreme in a memorable finish to the Group 1 TAB Australian Cup on Saturday night, prevailing in a spine-tingling duel down The Meadows home straight with Fernando Bluey. Trained by Steve Withers, who also bred and part-owns the ‘people’s dog’, Tommy Shelby overcame box four to gun down leader Fernando Bluey in the shadows of the post to claim his second Group 1 trophy, having previously won the Hobart Thousand in December. “I’m very proud of the dog,” said Withers. “He’s just an awesome dog. “He’s a dog we’ve bred from home, he’s been on the journey, he’s been everywhere, he’s done the job everywhere and he’s really put an exclamation mark on his career. I think he deserves it.”

Fernando Bluey, trained by 18-year-old Kayla Cottrell, was the $4.30 second elect from box six and he once again demonstrated great early pace to lead, courtesy of a 5.02s first split, while Tommy Shelby overcame an average getaway to drive into second. Tommy Shelby levelled up to Fernando Bluey turning for home and finished the better in a stirring drive to the line in 29.86s, with Lakeview Cruiser ($10) finishing third, giving champion stud dog Fernando Bale the trifecta. “Your first instinct is good but I’m a little bit biased!” said Withers after the tight finish. “He’s been in every big race, but he can’t draw a box and to get through the traffic tonight I’m very proud of him.” Tommy Shelby has now won 27 of his 41 starts, with his prizemoney skyrocketing to just under $750,000.

Tommy Shelby was the fastest qualifier for the Australian Cup after a scorching 29.51s heat victory and he started $2.80 favourite in the $300,000 to-the-winner final, despite continuing a horror run of draws during the three-week Cup Carnival.

Adding further merit to Tommy Shelby’s Australian Cup heroics, he hasn’t raced in his home state since September 26 as he’s campaigned in Victoria, Tasmania, NSW and Queensland, winning the Hobart Thousand and placing in the Melbourne Cup, Million Dollar Chase and Gold Bullion.

The son of Fernando Bale and Serena Fly High, named after the lead character from TV series Peaky Blinders, ran third from box six in the Group 1 Temlee invitational on opening night and then exited box five in his dominant heat performance.

“He’s got an awesome temperament. He’s a pet at home and then he comes to the racetrack and turns it on,” said Withers. Withers and fellow owners, wife Kira and Michael and Jodie Harders, have generously been donating 10 per cent of their owners’ prizemoney, five per cent overall, to various charities each month, with Bushfire Volunteers WA the beneficiary in February.

Fun Facts with Neil Brown Greyhounds can turn up on any track in Australia from any state. Such was the case when outstanding New South Wales sprinter Yannick was entered to race at Shepparton on Thursday the 26th of November 1987. Drawn box one in a mixed 4th and 5th grade stake over the 440 metre he was below his grade by quite a margin. Why trainer Alan Pringle decide to travel from Orange in New South Wales to Shepparton is anyone’s guess. The 37-kilo fawn dog (by Red Swinger from Hopeful whelped July 1985) had finished third in the National Derby behind Shy Sultan in February and had raced at the top level in his home state for most of that year. He was later in his career the 10/9 favourite for the 1988 Australian Cup finishing unplaced behind Golden Blessing. While in June of 1988 he won the Tweed Heads Galaxy from box one as a 4/5 favourite. You probably don’t have to wonder about the result: he bolted in winning by 12 lengths in 24.87 at 1/3. Diamond Life finished second and Thorgil Frizza third. The track record at the time was 24.73 set in October that year by Nan’s Pal. Most observers at the time thought he should have broken it. I am sure connections put the $150 first prize to good use. -----------------

Victorian race calling icon Ron Hawkswell celebrates his 50th year calling Greyhounds in 2021. People in the industry may not be aware of how it all started for the popular big man of the sport. Officially it was at Shepparton. At the start of any venture to succeed you not only need a steely determination but plenty of dedication. Local club caller back in 1971 was Ian Samblebe. Sambo is alive and well these days living on a Riverboat near the Gold Coast, and he gave Hawk the chance to call the last two races on the card each Thursday night. Ron was working for the tramways in his home suburb of Preston in those days. After working all day, he would drive the 172 ks, a two and a half hour trip each way, for the experience of calling the live races. It led to Ron becoming the first caller at Cranbourne, where he is a life Member, and a full-time job which he still holds today with RSN.

Vics strike it rich with new Pink Diamond series Victorian-bred greyhounds will share in an extra $900,000 annually as part of an exciting revamp of GRV’s Racing Calendar. Changes to the calendar include the introduction of a showpiece event called the VicBred Pink Diamond series, to be conducted in June each year throughout regional Victoria. The annual Pink Diamond series will incorporate a total of 48 heats across four regional tracks exclusively for greyhounds bred in Victoria, and cater for dogs of various ages and abilities, including veterans’ races. First and second placegetters will qualify for a spectacular showcase race night incorporating 12 feature finals, three of which will carry top prize money of $105,000, including $75,000 to the winner, which will come as heartening news to owners and trainers. Victoria’s breeders are also set to cash in on the Pink Diamond initiative, with all 48 heats to carry a $1,000 VicGreys Bonus, 50 per cent of which will go to the breeder, while the showcase finals night will include more than $80,000 in breeder-only bonus payments. Gastroenteritis and Appropriate Use of Antibiotics – GRV Veterinary Services Diarrhoea in greyhounds: Earlier in the year, the greyhound industry was significantly impacted by a nationwide outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by the gut (enteric) form of canine coronavirus (no relation to COVID-19 and cannot be spread to humans). In most cases it caused a self-resolving mild gastrointestinal illness (vomiting, diarrhoea, poor appetite), but some trainers reported a reduction in performance that lasted several weeks. The disease had implications for greyhound health and welfare and impacted the racing population with participants unable to race their greyhounds. Just like the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in humans, testing is an important part of any outbreak control strategy. Many greyhounds had their faeces sampled and tested for different infectious agents that identified the cause of disease, rather than guessing and providing unnecessary treatments.

Causes of Diarrhoea: While infection may often be thought of as a primary cause, there are many different reasons a greyhound can develop diarrhoea, including dietary indiscretion, a change in diet, ingestion of spoilt food or a toxin, food sensitivity or irritable bowel, stress, or as a side-effect of certain medications. In most cases, including those of infectious diarrhoea, routine antibiotic treatment is not required. Whenever there are multiple greyhounds affected on the same property, or that have been in contact with others affected by a gastrointestinal illness, it is reasonable to suspect an infectious cause. Infections may be from a virus, bacteria or parasite. Studies have shown that dogs carry many different infectious agents in their gastrointestinal tract, so it can often be difficult to distinguish which one is responsible for causing the observed illness. Many greyhounds will test positive for Campylobacter and Salmonella on faecal samples. These bacteria do not always cause illness, and antibiotic treatment will only be required in exceptional circumstances. They can however be spread between greyhounds or though ingestion of and contact with raw meat. They have the potential to also infect humans. Viruses, including parvovirus and coronavirus, are not normally found in the gastrointestinal tract of greyhounds and cannot be killed by antibiotics. In some cases, your vet may prescribe antibiotics to treat a secondary bacterial infection, especially if there is a secondary overgrowth of resident bacteria or more severe symptoms are present. Giardia is a parasite and is usually transmitted via contact with faeces or through faecal contaminated water. Your vet will be able to diagnose infection from a faecal sample and provide treatment recommendations.

What is antibiotic resistance? World Antimicrobial Awareness Week was 18-24 November and antibiotic resistance is important for us all to be aware of. Antibiotics are substances used to kill bacteria or to stop them from growing and multiplying. Antibiotic resistance is defined as the ability of a bacteria to resist the action of antibiotics. This means bacterial replication will not be inhibited or the bacteria will not be killed. It is easy to think that if you are giving antibiotics to a greyhound with diarrhoea that it was the medication that led to an improvement; actually, diarrhoea will resolve on its own within two or three days in most cases. Using antibiotics inappropriately may not harm the greyhound but increases the risk that antibiotic resistance develops. This is because antibiotics will only kill the bacteria that are sensitive to the drug; the resistant bacteria are the ones that can survive and multiply. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria occurring in animals can spread between animals and to humans, which may lead to infections that are difficult to treat. As an example, a recent case of severe pneumonia in a greyhound, cultured bacteria that were resistant to lincomycin, which has been commonly used in greyhounds for many decades. It is therefore extremely important that antibiotics are used prudently and only under the direction of your veterinarian, which includes using them at the dosage and duration prescribed. Antibiotics should only be used where necessary and the correct antibiotic to treat the likely or known infection should be selected by your veterinarian (which may require culture and sensitivity testing). Correct use of antibiotics will mean that in the future we are able to continue to improve animal welfare by treating and preventing bacterial infection and, also, to ensure that human medicine continues to have antibiotics that work. Note: If you have old / expired, non-prescribed, or left-over personal antibiotics in your kennels, you should discard them appropriately, along with any other prohibited substances not possessed in accordance with the Rules.

Amongst other topics, it advised against the feeding of knackery meat by reason of the dangers that it can contain prohibited substances that, when ingested, will provide positive results upon sampling. It also warned of the dangers of inadvertent exposure to personal (human) medications and the vigilance that is required when feeding greyhounds in this respect. The Greyhound Racing Industry was also alerted to other known sources of human foods which result in positive swabs if digested by a greyhound, such as bread or other baked goods containing poppy seeds, foods containing chocolate, and liquids such as tea or coffee including other products from health food shops or gyms that may contain caffeine or other stimulants. This Notice is to alert Greyhound Racing Industry Participants that GRV Stewards will seek an increase in penalties for any sample taken from a greyhound after 1 June 2021 which results in a positive test to a prohibited substance (as defined in the Greyhounds Australasia Rules (including permanently banned prohibited substances)) that are presumed to have occurred from inadvertent contamination through the feeding of unfit for human consumption meat (knackery meat) or from contamination with personal medications. Unfortunately, despite the well-understood risks, there is an increasing number of greyhounds being presented for racing while contaminated by prohibited substances. The presence of a prohibited substance in a registered racing greyhound undermines the integrity of the industry and depending on the prohibited substance, can lead to animal welfare issues.

Feeding greyhounds knackery meat and/or engaging in insufficient hygiene precautions (e.g., not wearing gloves whilst handling food or failing to wash hands after taking medication or using the bathroom) are known risks for contamination. Whilst each case will continue to be assessed on its own merits and in accordance with GRV’s Prosecution Guidelines, participants should expect increased penalties for breaches relating to the feeding of knackery meat or contamination from human medications or other human foods. Vale Poke The Bear Poke The Bear, one of Australia’s greatest sprinters in recent memory, has succumbed to cancer at just five years of age. The son of Fernando Bale and Nicki Fields was part of an all-conquering litter which included Out Of Range and Fully Loaded, while he was also a half-brother to the electrifying Hooked On Scotch. Bred and owned by Victorian father-son team Darren and Michael Puleio and trained by Seona Thompson, Poke The Bear retired in 2019 with 37 wins from 69 starts and over half a million dollars in prize money.

“It is with a heavy heart I would like to announce that our much loved champion Fred (aka Poke The Bear) lost his battle with cancer last night,” a devastated Darren Puleio posted on Facebook. “He was more than a race dog to us, he was a pet, a friend and an absolute gentleman.” Remarkably, Poke The Bear’s three biggest wins – the Topgun, Traralgon Cup & Silver Bullet – all came from Box 6 – while he also proved to be an accomplished 600m chaser, winning numerous races in town over middle distances.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination and ensure your Kennel Cough vaccine is up to date. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.

Kennel Cough During January and February there have been ongoing incidences of coughing dogs and some Kennel Cough scratchings with reports of just a mild husky cough. Please be vigilant, get veterinary advice if you get any coughing dogs, and contact GRV so we are aware of what is happening in the industry. Good hygiene and biosecurity practices are vital to limiting spread and impact of any infectious disease. Any greyhound that has Kennel Cough or has been exposed to Kennel Cough, MUST be scratched from any races it is nominated for, and not trialled or taken to other communal training facilities or GAP. Most importantly, under the greyhound Code of Practice all greyhounds must have a current C5 vaccine, which means a yearly Kennel Cough vaccination (preferably with an intranasal or oral vaccine), which are faster acting and more likely to be effective than injectable vaccines, with the C3 component every 1-3 years in line with EHMP requirements and veterinary advice. Surrendering greyhounds to a pound Recently, GRV has seen an increase in greyhounds being surrendered to a council pound instead of being re-homed. Surrendering a greyhound to a council pound is a breach of the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds (Code). A council pound can either be a council-run facility or a facility run by another organisation (including a shelter) that contracts to the council.

If a participant is considering surrendering a greyhound to a shelter (i.e., not a volunteer re-homing group) they must check with that shelter and/or their local council to determine if that shelter is acting as the contracted pound to their municipality; if it is, then surrendering a greyhound

in that manner will be a breach of the Code. If in doubt, the participant can contact the GRV Retirements team for advice. Many of the greyhounds surrendered recently have not attended a GAP pre-entry assessment. Current waiting times to get greyhounds into GAP are unusually short, so if participants do not have a new owner lined up for their greyhound, GAP is a great first re-homing option ahead of other volunteer re-homing groups. The best way to ensure your greyhound has the easiest transition to retirement is to ensure your greyhound is well socialised with people and other breeds of dogs. Preventing disease As we all know, disease can have a significant impact on both ourselves and the greyhounds in our care. One of the biggest challenges that participants can face, is the potential for rapid spread of a disease where greyhounds are housed in a kennel environment. Disease outbreaks in kennels can have a huge impact on the greyhounds’ welfare and your ability to race dogs for an extended period of time. Dirty and soiled living areas promote diseases and parasites which can quickly lead to sick greyhounds. So, as a preventative measure, you should always clean kennel and yard areas daily. This includes: ■

picking up any faeces and old /uneaten food and disposing of it properly so as not to attract flies or vermin that can carry disease;

■

washing away urine;

■

cleaning and filling containers with fresh water;

■

removing used or soiled bedding; and

■

washing floor surfaces with hospital grade disinfectant or a detergent/disinfectant combination, in warm or hot water where possible.

All items used for feeding (including food preparation areas and utensils) should always be cleaned at the end of each feeding time.

WELFARE AND REHOMING REPORT

Particular attention should be paid to daily cleaning, weekly disinfecting and scrubbing kennels on a regular basis to minimise the risk of diseases, particularly when the greyhound occupying a kennel changes. The risk of any spread of a disease - which may not always be immediately obvious - can also be minimised by placing greyhounds back in their own kennel after toileting, exercising, training and racing. Moving greyhounds between kennels will lead to more rapid disease spread; unless you have time to completely disinfect the kennel run and bed before each new greyhound is placed in it. Rehabilitation Grant now part of Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI) funding All greyhounds who suffer a GRI-eligible injury at a race meeting are eligible for a Rehabilitation Grant of up to $500 in addition to $2,000 for veterinary costs. The Rehabilitation Grant is paid directly to the participant to support recovery from the injury (but can also be used for additional veterinary costs), but the participant must apply for it using Part C of the GRI Admission Form (without this form, GRV cannot pay the grant). To claim the Rehabilitation Grant GRV also requires Part B of the GRI Admission Form that the off-track veterinarian has completed (although GRV may already have this). GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements, please contact GRV.

Participants may be asked to provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. Note: there in no fee for greyhounds being entered into GAP. The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. Bookings are essential for all trial sessions conducted at greyhound tracks in Victoria, except Longwood. Bookings can be made in person, by phone or via FastTrack (except Benalla, Horsham, Lang Lang, and Longwood).

Pen trials conducted after race meetings are required to be booked on the day by no later than race 8 via phone. Satisfactory Trials are conducted following TAB race meetings. Trial sessions are subject to late change and weather conditions.
