Firstly, I am very pleased to announce that GRV is boosting prize-money and other returns by around $1.3 million over this May and June, both through increasing stakes and fees and through introducing new events. We are doing this to help acknowledge and thank participants for keeping our sport racing and thriving over the COVID lock-downs last year. You can find more details about this significant increase in this edition of the Monthly. Safe racing remains one of GRV’s key priorities and our Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit has now recruited an additional four veterinarians to service the increased racing program while we continue to roll-out out of water carts, second tractors and power harrows to clubs as part of the Safe Racing Program. I am also pleased to report that work on the new Traralgon track, designed to be a safer track as anywhere in the world, is well on schedule to open for racing in late October. The first race meeting to held there will be quite an event so keep your eye out for upcoming announcements.

Speaking of volunteers, I’d like to remind you that 16 May is National Volunteer Day, followed by National Volunteer Week on 17-23 May. GAP has more than 700 volunteers and hundreds more help make race meetings happen across the State. They are a key part of our sport and welfare initiatives so please take the opportunity when you can to let them know how much their service is valued and appreciated.

I’d like to note that while we experienced very little extreme weather over summer, we shouldn’t be complacent about the approaching winter. So please make sure your greyhounds and facilities are prepared for training and racing in cold weather so we can all look forward to safe, warm and exciting racing over the coming months. Finally, a reminder that greyhound racing’s popular TV show ‘Thrill of the Chase’ returns to the airwaves from Wednesday on 9Gem to showcase the Warrnambool Cup from 5.30pm.

In other racing news, a new event joins Victoria’s racing calendar, the Sale Greyhound Racing Club’s Horizon race, carrying first prize money of $25,000. Heats of this inaugural 440 metre event will be held on Sunday 30 May with the final a week later.

Turning now to matters off the track, the Greyhound Adoption Program held a National Adoption Day event at its Seymour headquarters on Sunday 18 April with 50 greyhounds being re-homed to loving new families. This was the first GAP adoption event held in Victoria for more than 12 months because of Covid-19 and you can read more about the day in this issue. April was also National Adoption Month and other GAP events included Zoom sessions with potential and existing greyhound owners and GAP volunteers.

Tiggerlong Tonk ($3.10F) defeated Canya Cruise ($3.60) by 0.03L, with reserve runner Rippin’ Purton ($10.10) 1L away third in 29.76sec. It was Tiggerlong Tonk’s 36th win from 75 starts – and his first G1 victory at his 10th attempt! His stakes spiralled to $557,505.

How the race was won: Rising star Barooga Smoke ($3.20F) utilised Box 1 to perfection, leading from go to whoa and scoring by 3.1L over emerging talent Lakeview Cruiser ($7.20), with Carry On Angel ($13.30) a further 3.3L away third in a sizzling 29.16sec (Best). How the race was won: Victoria’s “next big thing” Lakeview Walter jumped well from Box 1 but couldn’t match motors with early leader Zulu Warlord (Box 7). He camped a couple of lengths behind him down the back straight before ‘cutting him down’ over the concluding stages. On the line, Lakeview Walter ($2.90F) had 1L to spare over fast-finishing rank outsider Spritley Ebony ($81.00), with Zulu Warlord ($3.30) a further 0.5L away third in 29.62sec. It was his seventh win from only 14 starts and his prizemoney jumped to $156,874. He won the G1 Silver Chief (525m) in January before finishing fourth in the G1 Temlee (525m) during the ‘Australian Cup Carnival’ – both at The Meadows.

How the race was won: Victoria’s strike rate queen Zipping Zarbo catapulted from the ‘red’ alley and employed her customary catch-me-if-you can tactics to stave off local speedster Renewed and desperately unlucky Vic counterpart Fabriola Zad. The ultra-consistent Zipping Zarbo ($1.90F) accounted for Renewed ($23.00) by 0.75L, with Fabriola Zad ($3.50) a further 1L away third in 29.56sec (Best). It was Zipping Zarbo’s 24th win from 50 starts, and her third in succession. Her stakes lifted to $94,129. She was also a G2 Warragul Cup finalist in January.

How the race was won: Jet-propelled Weblec Jet came out flying from Box 4 and left his rivals in a ‘jet stream’. Trained by Jeff Britton, Weblec Jet ($3.00F) defeated ‘country cups king’ and last year’s finalist Yozo Bale ($4.00) by 4L, with reserve runner Sweet As Emm ($8.90) – also a finalist last year – a further 1.25L away third in a sizzling 29.54sec (Best). The winning time was only .02sec off Fernando Express’ 29.52sec track record, set on July 27, 2018. A G1 National Derby finalist, Weblec Jet notched his ninth win from 27 starts and the $50,000 winner’s purse spiralled his stakes to $107,695. He’s also unbeaten in two starts over 520m at Geelong, having posted the fastest Cup heat time (29.77sec).

Industry to decide its destiny – new GCV Chair BY TONY HOMFRAY

Greg Davies’ introduction to greyhound racing was as an 18-year-old at Sandown with a mate who trained greyhounds, a time which will put him in good stead as he takes up the role as the first independent Chairman of Greyhound Clubs Victoria (GCV). A former policeman, Greg is best known for his time as the Secretary of the Victorian Police Association and more recently the inaugural Victorian Victims of Crime Commissioner. In his new role as the chair of GCV, Greg will represent all 13 Victorian greyhound racing clubs in industry operations and sustainability.

“I think independence is essential, because without it there will be always be an element of self-interest,” he said. “The only way to avoid this is to have someone who has not had a long association with the sport. My time at Ballarat has given me an insight into the sport, but I don’t have an ingrained affiliation either as a trainer or club official.” But it’s in his new role that Greg has a vision for the industry. “They key to the industry survival is in the welfare of the dogs,” he said. “I have always been alive to the fact that it is the welfare of the dogs that is what will determine the longevity of the industry. “Greyhound racing is a high-profile sport and it’s often because of its profile we see attempts to oppress it.

Also, Greg is conscious of the economic benefits of the greyhound industry across the state. He said it was important to recognise the impact on everyday lives of hard-working Victorians. “Thousands of Victorians are gainfully employed because of greyhound racing – from owners, trainers, track staff and hospitality workers,” he said. “And then we have breeders – like many Victorians they breed dogs for a living – it pays their mortgages, educates their families and pays their bills – the only difference is they breed greyhounds. “In accepting that, the industry’s future is in its own hands,” he said. As Greg settles into his new role, it is the advancement of greyhound clubs and greyhound care that is foremost on his agenda and he believes the industry must continue to find ways to minimise racing injuries. And that raises another issue that his high on his agenda – veterinary clinics at greyhound tracks. It was an idea that evolved during his time with the Ballarat Racing Club. In its restructure and redevelopment, the club has a proposal for the Morshead Park complex which includes new kennels and carparking with the current kennels being turned into a veterinary clinic which would be available to the community. “I would like to see a situation where there is a veterinary clinic on every greyhound course in the state with a guarantee that the vet is in attendance during race meetings with racing dogs taking priority. To me it’s not important that an injured dog not race again – what is important is that the injury is repaired, and the dog can go on to be re-homed with a caring family.” It’s been a long journey from his first greyhound race at Sandown, but Greg is sure of one thing: “Greyhounds are born to run – it’s in their DNA – and we need to keep finding ways for them to continue to do what they love safely,” he said.

Having most recently served as the treasurer on the Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club Committee, part of Greg’s role in that process was helping get the new structure right, particularly in the areas of financials, governance, staffing and racing. He views independence as an integral part of keeping the industry on track.

“But we have to face up to the fact that racing dogs do get injured, it’s an unavoidable fact. But in many aspects of life, dogs are injured and euthanised with far less attention than what is paid to the greyhound industry.”

Victoria’s Greyhound Adoption Program held a National Adoption Day event at its Seymour headquarters with 50 greyhounds being re-homed to loving new families. This was the first GAP adoption event held in Victoria for more than 12 months because of Covid-19, and New South Wales and Queensland also held their own events as part of the National Adoption Day drive. A total of 86 adoptions occurred across the three events. Emotions ran high at Seymour as would-be adoptees eagerly gathered to await the day to commence, including many firsttime adopters and others looking for that ‘second grey’ to accompany one they already had at home. Louise Martin, General Manager of Strategic Communication and Marketing at Greyhound Racing Victoria, which manages GAP, was delighted with how the day panned out. “Adoption days such as these are amazing events and it gives me the biggest thrill to see our beloved greys get their forever homes,” Louise said. The proud owner of a GAP greyhound named Princess, Louise explained that the dogs were just the best friend you could ever ask for. “They are the kindest and most intelligent of dogs. They demand and give affection and loyalty. They are the best of friends to a single person, couple or a family,” she added. Lucky adopters Declan and Ava have plenty to look forward to with their new fur-ever friend, Nitro, whom they adopted yesterday.

Nitro, had a fantastic racing career for Warrnambool-based trainer Kevin Mugavin under the name Nitro Value, amassing 84 starts for 14 wins and earning upwards of $31,000 in prize money. “I’m so excited to have been able to adopt Nitro today. They are all so placid and gentle and I just love them!, said Declan. Ava was also overjoyed with their new family member, saying “I can wait to get Nitro home… I’m so happy!” A total of 54 greyhounds were available for adoption, and the four that missed out were made available for adoption from the next day onwards. Potential adopters can make an appointment to meet some greyhounds at GAP’s Seymour property, and register for the upcoming foster care and volunteer info evening by going to gap.grv.org.au.

Simon Told Helen’s part-owner, Brian Parsons, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late champion. An emotional Parsons, 78, said: “It is with extreme sadness that Simon Told Helen is no longer with us. He brought great enjoyment for the syndicate and trainer, with his ‘never-saydie’ approach to competing and his ‘will-to-win’ attitude to racing.

Simon Told Helen – dubbed “The Nose” due to his famous Roman proboscis – exited the racing arena a four-time Group 1 winner. Trained by David Burnett, the contemporary sprinting champion started 48 times for 26 wins, 13 seconds and two thirds. His stakes total $918,941 – placing him ninth on Greyhound Clubs Australia’s ‘Top Prizemoney Earners’ list.

“He brought even more joy and memories to all that witnessed him and we are all saddened by the fact that we will never see any of his offspring on the racetrack.

Simon Told Helen’s G1 ‘fab four’ are the Silver Chief, Perth Cup, Harrison-Dawson and Maturity Classic. And he also won the G2 Geelong Gold Cup – all of these in 2020.

“For me, the syndicate manager with such a strong bond to Simon Told Helen, he has provided a wonderful experience and a life-fulfilling opportunity. Go ‘The Nose’.”

And last year, he was runner-up in the G1 Topgun, G1 Melbourne Cup, G1 Dapto Megastar, G2 Warrnambool Cup and G3 Silver Bullet. He was also a finalist in the G1 Temlee and G1 Brisbane Cup.

A bona fide superstar, Simon Told Helen had been on the verge of a sensational return to racing. Sadly, a ‘comeback’ to rival Dame Nellie Melba never eventuated! The reigning Australian Greyhound of the Year hadn’t raced since finishing third to Ebby Infrared in the Listed ‘The Collerson’ (520m) at Wentworth Park on January 23. Simon Told Helen was retired to stud, but fertility issues paved the way for an unexpected comeback. He was sent ‘north’ by his owners, the Emma’s Boys syndicate, to the Grandchester kennels of leading Queensland trainer Tony Brett. However, in tragic circumstances, Simon Told Helen passed away last month after suffering a twisted bowel. It was shock news to his legion of fans who were captivated by his stellar career.

Revered for his explosive early and mid-race ‘catch-me-ifyou-can’ tactics, Simon Told Helen competed in 16 group race finals – including nine G1s. Owned and bred by the Emma’s Boys syndicate, managed by Brian Parsons, Simon Told Helen (Jan ’18 Barcia Bale x Who Told Lindylu) was also crowned the 2019/20 Australian Greyhound of the Year. One reserve will progress from each of the following venues for each specific final.

General Conditions of Entry 1.

Victorian Bred greyhounds only.

2. A greyhound must not be under any order of prohibition under the rules of Greyhound Racing Victoria at the time of nomination that will prohibit that greyhound from competing at the 2021 Pink Diamond Finals Night at Bendigo on 18 June 2021. 3. Each greyhound is only eligible to compete in one series of heats.

5. The winners and the second placegetters from each of the 4 heats conducted will progress to the Finals night. 6. Upon entering a greyhound for any events in this series, trainers agree to themselves and their greyhound/s available for any reasonable promotional opportunities relating to this event upon request from Greyhound Racing Victoria. 7. Greyhound Racing Victoria reserves the right to alter and amend conditions and prize money for the 2021 Pink Diamond Series. Any changes to these terms and conditions will be published on www.grv.org.au. 8. Nominations will close at the following times: Warragul at 9am on Monday 7th June, Ballarat at 1pm on Monday 7th June, Shepparton at 9am on Tuesday 8th June and

If more than 8 unraced greyhounds are nominated, a random ballot will be undertaken.

If less than 8 unraced greyhounds are nominated, the ranking system maiden (5.4 Grading Guidelines) will be applied for the remaining positions.

Veterans Event (425m) Special Event selection criteria applies.

Greyhounds must be four years or older at the date of the race meeting.

Speed Star date locked in BY SANDOWN GRC

Speed Star is one of the sport’s most popular events and it will return Wednesday June 2 at Sandown Park. The match racing series will boast over $100,000 in prize money across three events. “It’s clearly a concept fans love and to have the date locked in is pleasing. It will put the cherry on top of the RSN Sandown Cup carnival,” said Adrian Scott, CEO of Sandown Park. To make matches as competitive as possible, the eight runners in each event will be divided into two groups – Pool A consisting of qualifiers 1-4, and Pool B consisting of qualifiers 5-8. Matches in Pool B will be randomly drawn and allocated rugs 1-4. Matches between qualifiers in Pool A will be randomly drawn and allocated rugs 5-8. “In the past we’ve seen some one-sided matches which can take away some of the excitement. We feel this tinker will help minimise that and encourage more mouthwatering contests.” Greyhounds qualify by times run at Sandown Park between Monday 1 February 2021 and Thursday 27 May inclusive. Qualifying trials will be run on Sunday 9 May, Sunday 16 May, and Sunday 23 May. Greyhounds domiciled interstate may trial between races on Thursday 20 May and 27 May.

The Sale Greyhound Racing Club is proud to launch a brand new race called the Horizon (440m), carrying first prize money of $25,000. Heats of this inaugural event will be held on Sunday, 30 May (Twilight), with the final a week later on Sunday, 6 June (Twilight). Sale GRC Operations Manager, Rob Popplestone said the club is confident that the Horizon will quickly grow in stature. “We have high hopes that, in the years ahead, the Horizon @ Sale will qualify for Group 3 status,” Popplestone said. “The Sale GRC already prides itself on its promotion, planning and execution of its main feature event, the Gold FM Sale Cup (650m), which we host on Boxing Day each year and which is Australian greyhound racing’s only Group 1 event held at a country venue.” “The Sale Cup has proven itself to be an attractive event to a broad demographic, and invites crowds in excess of 5000, with bands, DJs, fashion, food and wine all complimenting the quality of greyhounds on show striving for Group 1 glory.” “We endeavour to build on the Horizon @ Sale with a special Awards night to be introduced in 2022, which will include a range of awards recognising those that contribute to the club and the industry.” “It will also recognise local businesses that support our industry and community and acknowledge those who go above and beyond.” The Sale GRC is marketing the 2021 Horizon @ Sale as the start of something special where infinite possibilities arise. *Nominations for the Horizon close on Wednesday, 26 May at 11.00am. VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination and ensure your Kennel Cough vaccine is up to date. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.

Updated Breeding Exemption Application Form GRV has undertaken a review of the Breeding Exemption Application Form which is required when a breeder wishes to breed from a female greyhound that is over 8 years of age and/or already had 3 or 4 litters. GRV has released a new form which includes Code of Practice requirements. This new form will be mandatory from 1 June 2021. The new form replaces the two forms that were previously used (two-step submission), with a single form to be completed by both the breeder and their veterinarian (one-step submission). GRV has informed all greyhound veterinarians on the database and sent them a copy of the form. Greyhounds and cold weather Recent cold weather has reminded us all, winter is coming! As we all know, greyhounds have thin skin and, when in racing condition, little body fat. This means that during the colder months they must burn energy to stay warm, using vital energy needed for racing as well as increasing their risk of injuries and slowing recovery. Some tips for managing greyhounds in cold weather:

■

make sure your greyhound’s bedding area is warm, dry and free from draughts; this is a great time to check that your kennels and trailers are properly sealed from the weather;

■

check the surfaces around your property to make sure they are not slippery or have the potential to get waterlogged;

■

ensure exercise areas are checked and resurfaced if necessary, to avoid injury due to boggy or uneven muddy surfaces;

■

put a rug on your greyhound or add extra bedding on cold evenings to keep them warm;

■

monitor your greyhound’s skin and coat condition, as well as body fat and weight - you may need to increase food intake;

■

always ensure you greyhound has a proper warm up and cool down before and after exercise or racing warm up with a brisk walk followed by trotting to help increase bloody flow to the muscles;

■

make sure your greyhound is fully dried after hosing; and

■

don’t forget travelling - if the weather is going to be 10°C or lower on the day of the journey, provide warm bedding and make sure your greyhounds can be rugged.

Kennel Cough seems to be an ongoing issue in the industry. The state-wide outbreak in 2017 highlighted how a more serious outbreak would threaten the racing program by further depleting the availability of racing greyhounds. Kennel Cough can prevent a greyhound from racing for several weeks, and as affected dogs can also be infectious for weeks after they recover from symptoms, outbreaks have the potential to keep ‘smouldering’ for long periods of time. As the colder weather is now upon us, now is the time to ensure all your greyhounds have current Kennel Cough vaccines. Vaccination, while not always 100% effective, is the best protection, by significantly reducing the chances of an outbreak, and reducing the severity of symptoms of affected dogs. The Greyhound Code of Practice makes it mandatory to keep your greyhounds’ vaccinations ‘current’, and this includes an annual Kennel Cough vaccination.

WELFARE AND REHOMING REPORT

Kennel Cough prevention

Vaccination against Kennel Cough (the 4th and 5th components of a C5 vaccine) can be given at the same time as a C3 or as a separate vaccine; by intra-nasal, oral or injectable routes. GRV recommends the intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine as it has been found to be the most effective and fasting-acting vaccination. It also only needs one dose to be effective (does not require a booster a month later), although it must be boosted every 6-12 months. GRV also recommends Kennel Cough vaccinations are given early in the autumn to ensure full protection throughout winter which is the riskiest time. If you want to book your greyhound into GAP, you will need to check the GAP vaccination requirements (introduced on 1 March 2018) which are quite specific for Kennel Cough. Please see the notes on the GAP page in this edition or contact GRV or your veterinarian if would like more information.

Mr Marshall pleaded ‘Not Guilty’. The VRT dismissed the appeal. John Mangion – VRT Hearing 11 March 2021 – (GAR) 83(2) & 84A(1), failed to present the greyhounds “Awesome Asset”,“Moonyeen” & “Taipan Jill” free of any prohibited substance ‘Arsenic’ for events at Shepparton on 5 March 2020, Sandown on 3 May 20 & 10 September 2020. Mr Mangion pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a total period of 18 mths suspension with 14 mths suspended and a fine of $1500. Awesome Asset, Moonyeen & Taipan Jill were disqualified from the events.

Mario Briganti – VRT Hearing 23 March 2021 – GAR 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Rockstar Ruby” free of any prohibited substance ‘Meloxicam’ for an event at Sandown on 16 July 2020. Mr Briganti pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a 3 mths suspension, with 1 mth suspended for 24 mths and a fine of $2000 with $500 suspended for 24 mths. Rockstar Ruby was disqualified from the event. Barry Mills – VRT Hearing 24 March 2021 – GAR 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Nunniong Bear” free of any prohibited substance ‘Meloxicam’ for an event at Meadows on 29 July 2020. Mr Mills pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a $1500 fine with $500 suspended. Nunniong Bear was disqualified from the event. Sean Lithgow – VRT Hearing 25 March 2021 – GAR 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “New Sense” free of any prohibited substance ‘Pentobarbitone’ for an event at Healesville on 17 April 2020. Mr Lithgow pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a 3 mths suspension with 2 mths suspended. New Sense was disqualified from the event. David Burnett – VRT Hearing 26 March 2021 – GAR 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Who Told Stevie” free of any prohibited substance ‘Procaine’ for an event at Geelong on 7 August 2020. Mr Burnett pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a a $1500 fine with $500 suspended. Who Told Stevie was disqualified from the event. Melanie Lithgow – VRT Hearing 25 March 2021 – GAR 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Gotham Duke” free of any prohibited substance ‘Pentobarbitone’ for an event at Warragul on 5 May 2020. Mrs Lithgow pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a 3 mths suspension wholly suspended for 24 mths. Gotham Duke was disqualified from the event.

Clinton Capuano – VRT Appeal 12 March 2021 – GAR 69B(1), the greyhound “Snapper Smith” was charged with Fail To Chase at Sandown on 4 March 2021. Mr Capuano pleaded ‘Not Guilty’. The VRT dismissed the appeal.

Pia Triaca – VRT Hearing 10 March 2021 – LRR42.9(a), LRR42.9(c) & GAR105(4)(i), Ms Triaca failed to notify GRV of the deaths of three greyhounds within 2 working days and failed to dispose of these greyhounds in an approved manner. Additionally, Ms Triaca failed to notify GRV of the location of 14 greyhounds in her possession within 3 working days. Ms Triaca did not attend the hearing and failed to enter a plea. The VRT imposed a 3-month disqualification and a $1000 fine on each charge, with the disqualifications to be served cumulatively.

Peter Terry – VRT Hearing 12 March 2021 – (GAR) 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Impending” free of any prohibited substance ‘Prednisolone’ for an event at Sale on 19 June 2020. Mr Terry pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a of 4 mths suspension and a $1,500 fine with $500 suspended. Impending was disqualified from the event.

Braden Finn – VRT Appeal 23 March 2021 – GAR83(2)(a), GAR79A(4), GAR83(2)(a) & GAR86(o), On 16 March 2021, Mr Braden Finn filed a notice of appeal regarding the suspension of his registration on 25 May 2020 due to prima facie evidence of rule breaches relating to prohibited substances. The VRT refused leave to extend the time within which to appeal.

To assist participants with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au. All sessions for the next 2 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■

have a current C5 vaccination as per the specific GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS described on this page given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and

■

not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Racing Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org. au/retirement-from-racing.

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements, please contact GRV.

Participants may be asked to provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. Note: there in no fee for greyhounds being entered into GAP. The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

Victorian greyhound racing’s ability to continue throughout the Covid-19 pandemic has been a credit to many, and none more so than our sport’s participants. As the end of financial year approaches, GRV is showing its appreciation by offering up a number of prize money initiatives totalling approximately $1.3M. Some of these initiatives are temporary, including a handful that will run throughout the May/June period. GRV’s General Manager Racing, Greg Kerr said the new initiatives being programmed into the racing calendar through to the end of the racing season would ensure GRV distributes the full amount of prize money promised. “I’d like to sincerely thank all of our participants from the bottom of my heart for working so hard to help us continue racing in unprecedented times during the pandemic,” Kerr said. “We recognise how much time and effort you’ve put into adapting to all of the changes we’ve made along the way, while also managing changes in your own personal lives, and you are still continuing to support regular changes within the program today.” Below is a snapshot of the initiatives: ■

Preference to Maiden, Grade 7 and Grade 6 race meetings (11 in total) will be increased to Provincial Full Stakes for May & June 2021. This is providing opportunities for younger greyhounds in the racing program. A temporary doubling of Starter’s Fees from $10 to $20 will be introduced for May and June 2021.

The Great 8 series – which are basically Best 8 races - is back after a successful launch in 2020. There will be eight Great 8 events held throughout May and June 2021, each carrying a total pool of $21,000 in prize money. Details of the Great 8 events will be announced shortly.

The build up to the VIC BRED Pink Diamond series sees two VIC BRED races that carry $10k in bonuses in late May. Grade 5 series heats at Shepparton (17 May) and Warragul (25 May) will lead into finals totalling $14,725.

The VIC BRED Pink Diamond series in June will see 48 heats across four regional tracks, leading to 12 finals at Bendigo on 18 June. Open exclusively to greyhounds bred in Victoria of all abilities, this series offers opportunities over a variety of distances, encouraging breeding sustainability and providing a feature night to end the 2020-21 racing season. As announced in March 2021, a 15 per cent increase to prize money for races 480m and beyond (at Provincial and Level 3 racing) continues to roll on and is now a permanent part of GRV’s prize money offering. Early results have already seen a positive increase in the number of races being programmed over 480+ metres.

Bookings are essential for all trial sessions conducted at greyhound tracks in Victoria, except Longwood. Bookings can be made in person, by phone or via FastTrack (except Benalla, Horsham, Lang Lang, and Longwood).

Pen trials conducted after race meetings are required to be booked on the day by no later than race 8 via phone. Satisfactory Trials are conducted following TAB race meetings. Trial sessions are subject to late change and weather conditions.
