GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
CEO’S UPDATE The biggest highlight of August was undoubtedly the Victorian Greyhound Awards at Sandown Park where many of Victoria’s greyhound racing community came together to celebrate some great achievements over the past 18 months. Fernando Bale was quite rightly judged greyhound of the year and I congratulate all the nominees and winners on the night. Both the Premier, The Hon Daniel Andrews, and the Minister for Racing, The Hon Martin Pakula, also provided strong messages of support on the night for the industry and for the reforms now underway. The Victorian Greyhound Awards was a great showcase of the commitment, passion and hard work of the good people who have driven the sport’s achievements and that will underpin the journey of reform we need to take to secure its long term future. August also saw the conclusion of GRV’s first series of Stakeholder Engagement Workshops, attended by over 600 people. Following the great contribution made by participants who either presented or attended the workshops, GRV will be holding a further three workshops in regional Victoria this month and you can find out more on the GRV website. The workshop discussions were very much driven by participants and generated many constructive proposals for a range of issues from breeding controls, to rearing and training, to improving opportunities for smaller scale participants. GRV is already acting on some of these proposals and has provided to all 13 Clubs the recommendations and suggestions made by panel experts and participants who attended the ‘Track Safety, Track Design and Lures’ workshop and the Clubs have each submitted a plan to improve the safety of our tracks. So you can expect to see a number of changes to tracks as we strive to make them safer. On this issue, race day trials of the hoop arm lure system to reduce injury rates have now also been completed and GRV is studying the results with a view to making a decision on future lures for Victorian racetracks. In other news, I was pleased to announce last month the appointment of Shane Gillard as GRV’s first General Manager of Integrity. Shane brings more than 20 years’ experience in management and leadership across a variety of sectors including senior compliance and enforcement roles with WorkSafe Victoria. He will lead GRV’s much expanded Integrity Department which will be increasingly busy over the coming year with an expanded swabbing program and a stronger focus on working directly with participants to ensure compliance through new education and information initiatives. The Department now also has a new 24/7 phone hotline on 1300 856 109 to confidentially report suspicious activity and, as well, its Investigations Unit will be engaging more closely with participants to make everyone part of the solution in ensuring the sport’s integrity. While much has been achieved over the past year in positioning the sport in Victoria for a sustainable future, the decision to close down greyhound racing in NSW makes it clear the rate of reform in Victoria cannot slow down. Over the next six months, GRV will be picking up the pace as its capital works program rolls out, as new race day injury and treatment initiatives are put in place and as it works towards the goal of giving all Victorian greyhounds the opportunity to live out their lives in full. GAP will also keep growing, with a new assessment centre at Mt Mercer in Central Victoria and the expansion of GAP Seymour to promote and educate people about greyhounds as pets.

Victorian Greyhound Awards Fernando Bale was crowned the 2015/16 Victorian Greyhound of the Year at the Victorian Greyhound Awards, held at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club on August 19. The night was deemed a huge success by everyone there, with greyhound racing in Victoria receiving a glowing endorsement by Premier Daniel Andrews (via video message) and Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula. The night was also highlighted by the appearance of 12 adopted greyhounds, along with video packages outlining the tremendous recent growth of Victoria’s Greyhound Adoption Program and Victorian greyhound racing’s increasing presence in local communities. The Andrea Dailly-trained Fernando Bale was judged the best performed greyhound in Victoria during the 18 month period incorporating the 2015 calendar year and the first half of 2016. The eight-time Group 1 winner received the most votes by the Victorian Greyhound of the Year Panel, ahead of fellow finalists (in alphabetical order) Dyna Double One, No Donuts and Space Star.

Racing Association at a pivotal time in its history, overseeing the move from Olympic Park and the development of The Meadows, which opened in February 1999. “Margaret has been terrific for us over the last 20 years,” said long-time MGRA Chairman, Eddie Caruana. “She was there for the ‘Last Bark in the Park’, our final meeting at Olympic Park in 1996, and there were some very difficult times while we raced at Sandown before we eventually decided on the location of The Meadows. Everyone thought we were crazy but it ended up being a very good move. “Margaret oversaw the whole operation at The Meadows; from buying the land to the opening meeting. We built the place from scratch and we had very limited funds, so she did a very good job with the finances. “I think Margaret’s best quality is that she’s brutally honest. She calls a spade a spade and she doesn’t take any rubbish from anyone. She is hard but fair with the staff and I think the longevity of the staff at The Meadows is testament to the respect they have for Margaret.” From humble beginnings The Meadows has gone from strength to strength under Marg’s guidance, with the circuit now host to nine Group 1 events, highlighted by the jewel in the crown, the Topgun, and the lucrative Australian Cup Carnival. “I don’t think even Margaret knew at that time The Meadows was going to grow into the success it has,” MGRA Director, Terry Davis said.

“The Australian Cup Carnival, with the Zoom Top, Rookie Rebel and Temlee, plus the Topgun and Hume Cup have all been successful due to Margaret’s relationships, not only with our sponsors but certainly with all patrons at the track.

Hall of Fame inductee Marg Long has been synonymous with The Meadows’ rise to become one of Australia’s and indeed the world’s most successful greyhound racing venues.
“She has given the Hume Council and ourselves a great partnership, she’s enjoyed bringing young people into the industry and she’s enjoyed employing young people in the industry. “She is a strong-willed woman, she’s very strong in the boardroom and all our directors respect Margaret.
After cutting her administrative teeth at Traralgon and Geelong in the 1980s and ’90s, Marg assumed control of the Melbourne Greyhound
“To see The Meadows grow into a leading Australian greyhound track has certainly been Margaret’s greatest moment in the industry.”
Hall of Fame: Cursorial
“Cursorial was my father’s first greyhound and naturally the intention was to race her, but unfortunately after her second race she got injured, so my father and Bill Lecky decided to retire her and breed from her,” said Neville Nash.
Breeding: Which Chariot x Constitute Whelped : 01/02/1967 Trainer : Bill Lecky Owner : Russel Nash When you look back through Cursorial’s history it’s all about quality not quantity. After injury restricted her to just two career starts, Cursorial made her mark as one of the most important broodmatrons in greyhound racing, leaving behind 13 greyhounds to carry her lines. Cursorial’s story isn’t just about spectacular bloodlines. She also brought to life a story about luck, love, friendship and dedication. Russel Nash and Bill Lecky shared a friendship through Geoff Dawson that was strengthened by the purchase of Cursorial. In 1967, Lecky approached Russel about co-owning Cursorial, a decision that almost 50 years later sees their names feature alongside Cursorial in GRV’s Hall of Fame. Russel’s son Neville tells the story…
8
It wasn’t just Russel who held a great interest in Cursorial, as Russel’s wife Joyce Nash was besotted with her. The Nash family, who lived in the Melbourne suburb of Murrumbeena, would visit Bill Lecky’s place in nearby Ormond on a regular basis to handle the pups and visit Cursorial. “She was a beautiful greyhound, very friendly and placid,” Neville said. “My mother was emphatic to Bill to contact her when Cursorial was going to have the pups because mum wanted to be there. For the three litters she had in Ormond, mum was there no matter what time of day it was.” Cursorial had three litters, two sired by Clay Moss and one litter to Black Top. Nine of her puppies went onto have very successful careers both on and off the track. The best of her progeny was New Mariner, who won the Melbourne Cup and National Sprint Championship in 1973. “Three of her sons sired greyhounds that won the equivalent of group one races today. Eight of her daughters were bred on, most notability Zulu Moss, who was the dam of Chief Dingaan, a very successful sire in his own right,” Neville added.

Hall of Fame: Ron Izon Years involved in industry: 40 years Category: Racing Equipment Notable Achievments - Constructed the first set of automatic trip start boxes. - Designed moveable boxes for Geelong, Warrnambool and Wangaratta Clubs. - Trained talented coursing greyhound Sylvan Price in the 1970’s. - Contracted to Greyhound Racing Victoria to assist country clubs across the state. - In 2002, GRV made a special presentation to Ron in recognition of his outstanding service to the industry. The late Ron Izon was a track maintenance doyen, and invented the first set of automatic trip start boxes for Cranbourne, which is now uniform across all Victorian greyhound tracks. “Ron was a very committed person and a great tinkerer with machinery,” brother John Izon explained. Ron had a mechanical mind which he took into an electrical business for five years. His mechanical mind then turned to greyhound racing, which outside his family, became his life. Ron took up work at Cranbourne as the Track Maintenance Manager which led to him being contracted by Greyhound Racing Victoria to assist all clubs around the state, which he did for over a decade. “I think Ron’s mind was always on mechanics, and being contracted to the board (GRV) and seeing how the starting boxes worked (through a manual process), he could see a better way. With his background in mechanics and electrics he applied his mind to develop a trip system to eliminate (having to) hand-open the boxes,” John continued. Ron’s new trip system for the boxes was picked up by mainstream media, labelling it as the first major innovation in greyhound racing for many years. From there he developed a system that mechanically moved the boxes on and off the track to allow greyhounds the chance to compete over a broader variety of distances – these were installed at Geelong, Warrnambool and Wangaratta. Ron wasn’t just a mechanics man; he was a loving father to five daughters including Pauline Vernon. “Our dad was caring, hard-working, incredible man, who was exceptional at everything he did. He did anything for anybody, at any time. It was wonderful he was able to combine his love of greyhound racing with his mechanical mind,” Pauline explained. Ron also had success as a greyhound breeder and trainer, in particular with a brilliant coursing greyhound called Sylvan Price in the mid-1970s. “Undoubtedly Sylvan Price was his best greyhound because he won the Victorian Derby (1974) and the Waterloo Cup (1975),” John said. Sylvan Prince also went onto win the 1974 Warragul and Wangaratta Cups as well as the 1975 Warrnambool Cup.

Ron Izon passed away in 2004 at the age of 75, upon which time his wife Irene took charge of their racing greyhounds with continued success.

Animal Welfare Monthly Report Gavin Goble - General Manager, Animal Welfare GRV is continuing to develop a comprehensive animal welfare strategy to improve outcomes for greyhounds at every stage of their life with a particular focus on initiatives that contribute to full re-homing. We are also developing policies and procedures, educational initiatives, and rule changes, to improve the welfare of greyhounds during breeding and rearing, educating, training and racing, and post-racing, including re-homing and end of life. In August I reached out to veterinarians both on and off-track to ensure they are aware of the new rules regarding euthanasia and the requirements for participants to make every effort to re-home fit and healthy greyhounds. We are just about to advertise for an Education Manager to drive opportunities for participants to develop their knowledge and skills, particularly relating to welfare. We are continuing to significantly expand our GAP program, including recruiting more staff and improving our assessment process. However, I would like to stress that GAP should not be the first, nor the only, option for re-homing retired greyhounds. Should you have any feedback or suggestions regarding welfare initiatives or opportunities please email me direct at ggoble@grv.org.au.

There is no Take Two! By Molly Haines. Australia’s only female race caller Victoria Shaw has quickly become a part of the greyhound racing community, following a day in July at Healesville decorated in a sea of pink jumpers to celebrate Women On Track. Victoria Shaw’s introduction to racing generally came through a former race horse which she was given for the paddock. Following persistence and hard work Victoria is now proud to be the only female caller in Australia to call all three codes, with some of her proudest moments broadcast throughout Australia. “My thought’s career wise was (somewhere) in the media, but I took a liking to radio especially after seeing a photo of the late Bill Collins, who is also known as The Accurate One, and thinking live radio is the best - there is no take two!” Victoria says she gets overwhelmed by how inclusive the greyhound racing community is, and how ready people are to help or offer advice. “Everyone is so willing to share their experiences so you learn something new every time you are at a track and that really helps me deliver on race day, I am very impressed with the level of respect for females in the greyhounds.” Victoria believes the only way she will continue to improve is through real life experience and Sandown race caller Rob Testa has helped her gain that experience along the way. On a Sunday afternoon Victoria attends the afternoon meeting at Sandown to call alongside Rob. “Sandown have given me a great opportunity to represent their club alongside Rob who has given me confidence across all codes.” “Rob Testa has been outstanding as a mentor and I will be forever thankful because calling is constantly a work in progress. Rob always said to me that you have to be able to edit in the race and it’s advice that has stuck with me.” Victoria called her first greyhound race at Healesville last year alongside James Van de Maat, thanks to manager Cynthia O’Brien who is a great support to women in greyhound racing. “A greyhounds speed is definitely a challenge to call, especially up the straight at Healesville. I have great respect for how James calls there because it’s very difficult.” Throughout her experience in all three codes of racing Victoria can’t single out one code as her favourite, but she does enjoy the challenge each experience brings.

Stakeholder Engagement Workshops Update GRV’s Stakeholder Engagement Workshops are proving an extremely useful, productive and well received forum for participants and GRV to work through a range of issues with a particular focus on animal welfare. The workshops have generated much constructive discussion and proposed solutions and these outcomes will play a key part in GRV’s future strategy and decision-making. Here is a snapshot of the outcomes from two of the most recent workshops. Workshop 7 – Opportunities for Smaller Scale Participants Unlike at previous workshops there was no panel session. This was replaced by a presentation of the results of a survey that went out to smaller scale participants and a brief explanation of a proposed prizemoney restructuring. This followed up with an extended working group session where three questions (instead of one) relating to the results of the survey were asked. The questions asked were about racing program and grading system changes, facilities, services and advice requirements, and breeding issues that affected smaller-scale participants. Workshop 8 – Industry Education and Training Requirements The purpose of this workshop was to identify areas where education and training is deficient and to propose ideas as to what GRV and the industry could do to provide good outcomes in those areas. Some key points that came out of this workshop were to provide a Centre of Excellence that could facilitate seminars, training modules and other education initiatives for breeding and training; the need to create clear career pathways, including gaining formal accreditation and experience working under the guidance of mentors; apprenticeships to attract younger people into the sport was well supported on the day. Note: A series of GRV’s Stakeholder Engagement Workshops will now head into regional Victoria, providing more participants with the opportunity to have a say in shaping the future of greyhound racing in Victoria. Go to grv.org.au for details.
Court for Live Baiters A number of Victorian-based greyhound trainers were last month sentenced over live baiting charges. Tooradin track-owner Stuart Mills and his father Anthony were each sentenced to 150 hours of community service for using live baits to train their dogs as well as a five-year ban from participating in greyhound racing. The pair each received a conviction and a two-year good behaviour bond. Stuart Mills was charged with 35 animal cruelty acts, pleading guilty to 12 offences. Anthony Mills was charged with five offences and pleaded guilty to two. Former assistant track manager at the Tooradin trial track, Lawrence Cunningham, was convicted and given 150 hours community corrections order as well as a five year disqualification. He was disqualified for life by the RADB in August, 2015. Trainer Darren McDonald was also convicted, given a five-year ban from participating in greyhound racing and a two-year good behaviour bond. Robert Smith, Kenneth Hodges and Douglas Wheeler were each convicted, fined $2000 and disqualified from participating in greyhound racing for five years. The matters of Eric Sykes, Neville King, Paul Anderton and Kerry Chalker will be heard later in the year.

Racing, Wagering & Business Development Monthly Report Stuart Laing - General Manager, Racing, Wagering & Business Development 2016 Ready 2 Race Sales at Bendigo One of Australia’s biggest greyhound marketplaces, the 2016 Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales, is fast approaching. Over 350 greyhounds have been sold at the last four R2R Sales, fetching prices as high as $28,000 at Victoria’s only auction for racing greyhounds. It’s a great and rare opportunity to put young dogs in front of an audience that’s there to buy. Only two out of the 57 on sale last year passed in and the others fetching an average price of $5,000. Following on from the success of previous Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales, this year’s event will once again be held at Lord’s Raceway in Bendigo. Heats will be conducted on Sunday 20th November 2016 and the Finals and Auction conducted on Saturday 26th November 2016. Only Victorian bred greyhounds whelped between the 1st July 2014 and 30st June 2015 are eligible to be entered into the Sales.
Making a Difference: Gavin Goble by Molly Haines. Greyhound racing isn’t just addictive to those who spend hours on end with greyhounds. General Manager of Animal Welfare Gavin Goble is a self confessed lover of greyhounds thanks to 14 years working as a vet trackside. “I have always loved the greyhound dog because of their gentle nature but I have also always loved the industry,” Gavin explained. Gavin’s involvement in greyhound racing is not your usual tale. While working in a Vet practice, Gavin was thrown into track work at his local greyhound club in New Zealand, which sparked his interest as he began to treat, cure and prevent common injuries in racing greyhounds. “It was really by default that I got involved with greyhounds and I very quickly realised how much I enjoyed dealing with them. From there I developed an expertise in treating greyhounds and as my interest grew so did my knowledge and then my clientele.” Although being a vet doesn’t leave much spare time, Gavin calls himself a serial renovator and said it took him five years to complete his home in New Zealand after considerable damage from the 2010 earthquakes. Gavin has also completed a few marathons and the New Zealand
12 Coast to Coast multisport event, which spans 243km along the
Nominations will open at 9:00am, Monday 5th September 2016 and will remain open until 4:00pm, Friday 30th September 2016. Numbers for this year’s Sales will be capped at 130 greyhounds. Preference will be given to unraced greyhounds at the close of nominations and then a waiting list compiled. In the instance that nominations are received for more than 130 unraced greyhounds, the youngest greyhounds will be given priority. If demand is extremely high, GRV and the Club may consider conducting the events over more than one weekend. Nominators, handlers and bidders must be registered with GRV to be eligible to participate in the R2R races and/or purchase at the Auction. Further details, along with the terms and conditions, can be found on the GRV website at www.grv.org.au/ready2race.
South Island and takes two gruelling days to complete. “I ran a few marathons and multisport in New Zealand; multisport is a triathlon for people who can’t swim – kayaking replaces the swimming.” After a 12-year absence from track work with greyhounds and a move to Australia, Gavin jumped at the opportunity to re-join the sport with Greyhound Racing Victoria. “I think the opportunity to make a difference is what drew me to the role at GRV. You don’t need to be a vet to do this role, and I think the fact that I am a greyhound vet is a huge advantage.” Gavin believes you have to work backwards towards a more sustainable sport, looking at how many greyhounds can be rehomed each year and that being the number of dogs that should be bred in order to achieve full re-homing of greyhounds. “From there we can work the race program around the number of dogs. I believe full re-homing is totally achievable.” Greyhound Racing Victoria envisages a future of full re-homing of greyhounds and Gavin believes that changes to the culture of educators, breeders, rearers, owners and trainers is necessary to achieve that goal. Two months into his new role at Greyhound Racing Victoria, Gavin is confident that change and reform will occur, reaffirming that “I know we can make a huge difference.”

Feeding, Medication & Supplement Guidelines WHEN it comes to the feeding, medication and use of supplements involving your greyhound it is vital to follow the guidelines set out to achieve best practice. These guidelines are outlined on the Greyhound Care and Standards website via greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/health-andwell-being/feeding-medication-supplement-guidelines. Great care and vigilance must be taken when feeding your greyhound to ensure they are free of prohibited substances. Certain foods should be avoided, such as meat that would be unfit for a human to consume. GRV also encourages participants to take great care when giving ‘health’ products to their greyhound during preparation for racing – participants are responsible for any product their greyhound consumes. In addition, participants must keep up-to-date records of vet checks and visits, and ensure their greyhound is treated only with medications prescribed by a qualified veterinarian.
GOTBA News Sandra Reed - President, GOTBA Victoria (pictured). As usual, it’s been another busy month, with a lot going on. We continued to have representatives at GRV’s Stakeholder Engagement Workshops, and have had much to say on behalf of our members. We appreciate the opportunity to work with GRV to ensure we get the best possible outcomes for the future of Greyhound racing. At the workshop on the Racing Program and Grading it was pleasing to hear sensible suggestions to improve the current grading system, so that we have more opportunities to keep dogs racing longer. The workshop on Industry Education and Training Requirements threw up some great ideas including apprenticeships for new trainers, centres of excellence, tiered trainer & breeder licences so that competency levels were met, and ongoing training and mentoring.
Prohibited substance withholding guidelines have been produced by Greyhounds Australasia for a number of genuine therapeutic substances, available on their website at www.galtd. org.au Participants are encouraged to be mindful of using nonveterinary, human and over-the-counter products that can carry the risk of offending under the relevant rules of greyhound racing. Occasionally, GRV’s Integrity Department will release important information regarding new policies, guidelines, and any other ‘steward’ related matters. Information can also be found on FastTrack under the ‘stewards’ tab in ‘General Alerts.’ Participants are encouraged to regularly review GRV’s General Alerts to ensure they are up to date with changes to rules.
We have more comprehensive reports on the workshops on the GOTBA website and details of current issues in our newsletter. A recent issue that we’ve addressed is food contaminants causing positive swabs. There is now a fact sheet on greyhoundcare.grv. org.au to help you understand this better and I would recommend that you read it to learn about the risks around food, supplements and medications. We also hope to have a speaker at our AGM to help you further understand this topic. The other important issue was about on-track vets and the need for them to carry all necessary supplies to ensure they can treat any injury immediately, which unfortunately has not always been the case. So if you experience an issue with veterinary care due to a lack of supplies or equipment at the track please report it to us and we’ll follow it up. There is no group other than GOTBA Vic that is recognised to represent you to our regulators or politicians, but the more members we have the stronger we are, so please join up today and become involved – you’ll see how hard we are working on your behalf.

Greyhound Community Fund Helps Kids Keep Cool This Summer by Mick Floyd Pupils at Wallarano Primary School will escape the heat this summer thanks in part to a grant from the Greyhound Community Fund. In October Wallarano Primary School received a $3000 grant from the Fund which it used to provide entertainment at their annual fete. The fete proved an outstanding success.
Strategic Communication & Marketing Monthly Report Louise Martin - General Manager, Strategic Communication & Marketing As Victorian greyhound racing continues to embark on its reform agenda, the Strategic Communication and Marketing team is seeking to accurately tell the story of greyhound racing. And while we have been active in speaking about GRV’s focus on animal welfare and integrity, we are determined to tell all the marvellous stories of the impact that greyhound racing has on communities right across Victoria. There are more than 3000 people employed in our sport throughout the state and we want to find out more about their stories and what greyhound racing means to them. If you or someone you know has an interesting, heart-warming or quirky story to tell about your involvement in greyhound racing, please get in touch with us. And it may be more interesting than you even think. Unearthing these stories is part of our aim with our Clubs in the Community project which will see members of the Strategic Communications and Marketing team travel out to Victoria’s rural and regional communities to learn about and tell the tales of what greyhound racing truly means for the people around our state.
“We used the money from the grant to help fund the school’s fete, which helped us to raise enough money to allow us to provide air conditioning in our new buildings,” said fundraising coordinator Debra Arztenhofer who was instrumental in organising the fete. “In the past if we had three or four hot days in a row the heat wouldn’t dissipate and it would just get hotter and hotter as the day wore on. It wasn’t very good for the children and their learning because they were so hot from the moment they arrived and couldn’t keep their attention. It was so bad at times that there were parents who would pick their kids up at lunch time because too was just too hot. “Now, the rooms are much more comfortable which obviously greatly benefits the children and staff.” Chairman of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, Mr Geoff Dawson, was proud to have been able to support the school to improve the learning environment for local children. “The Wallarano Primary School is a very impressive facility,” he said, after being given a tour of the school. “We are happy to be able to provide assistance to the school community and we’re glad that it has made a real difference for the kids.” The Greyhound Community Fund is a joint venture between the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club and Greyhounds Entertainment. Funding is available to non profit organisations that provide quality programming in the areas of health, recreation and community events and festivals that benefit the community in the City of Greater Dandenong. Organisations to have benefited from the fund include the Rotary Club of Noble Park, Multiple Sclerosis, Springvale Learning and Activity Centre, Dandenong West Community Hub, 3rd Noble Park Scout Group, Keysborough Cricket Club and South Eastern Legacy Group. Applications for the Fund are now open. Go to sandowngreyhounds.com.au/greyhound-community-fund
Telling our story is the common theme that drives everything we do in Strategic Communication and Marketing. In August alone we have been telling the story of the highachievers of our sport, by recognising them in the Victorian Greyhound Awards held on August 19, as well as continuing to feature stories which educate those in the industry about the new rules in place; and those to come. Our story is complex and not without its challenges, but there are also so many good parts of that story to tell as we highlight all 14 that is great in Victorian greyhound racing.

A regular look back at the history and heritage of greyhound racing Why are they called Greyhounds?
Talk
with Mark Duclos
Irrespective of whether it’s a Maiden at Warragul or the Group 1 Topgun, when punters think they’ve ‘beaten the bookies’ and got over the odds, the smile on their face grows like a split watermelon and that’s even before the race has been run! For the first time ever, TAB has released an ‘all-in’ market on this years G1 TAB Melbourne Cup final to be run at Sandown Park on Friday, November 18 and TAB Fixed Odds bookmaker Matt McCann, says there is an abundance of value on offer for punters. “The real beauty of the All-In Melbourne Cup market is that punters could quite conceivably get massive overs on a greyhound that starts favourite but to do that, they must be willing to bet blind not even knowing whether their selection will make it to the heats, let alone the final,” said McCann. “At this stage, Zambora Brockie heads the market at $8 and is already holding more than 75% of the money for the Cup but we’ve also had support for the very promising Fanta Bale who is on the third line of betting at $16.” While Fanta Bale is still racing his way through the grades, there’s no doubting the potential of this Wheeler bred chaser who has already won seven times from just eight starts including a determined win in the Warragul St. Leger. “At this stage, Fanta Bale may be giving away experience and class to the likes of Zambora Brockie and Blazin’ Bomber but there’s no doubt he is the rising star and with three months until the Cup heats, he could well be the surprise packet.” said McCann. With prices ranging from $8 for Zambora Brockie to $301 for Flying Amy Classic winner, Fabulous Bill, punters can also request a price on a runner not currently in the markets from the TAB Fixed Odds bookies. Yep, it’s what a punter dreams of...beating the bookies at their own game!
The short answer is nobody is quite sure why but there are several theories. The Romans believed greyhounds came from Celtic Europeans, with references to Celt Hounds and ‘Vertraha’ - a Celtic Arrian word for greyhound appearing around 2,000 years ago. Meanwhile the Celts thought they originally came from Greece and called them “Greek hounds”. To further confuse things, the Latin word for greyhound was Leporarius, from lepus or “hare” and the Latin term Cursorius canis or “running dog” was also used in Anglo-Saxon England. The actual word “greyhound” started to appear in writing in the late Middle Ages and is thought to have originated in the old English word “grighund” or the Icelandic “Greyhundr” which supposedly meant “dog hunter” or high order of rank. A related theory suggests the “grey” is derived from “gre” or “gradus,” meaning “first rank,” so that greyhound would mean “first rank among dogs”. Others believe that the original greyhound stock was actually predominately grey which led to the name or that it is a corruption of “gaze (ie: sight) hound”. However, there is general agreement on the collective noun for a group of greyhounds, which is a “leash” of greyhounds. Speaking of greyhound names, it’s been estimated that every living greyhound around the world today can have its lineage traced back to one dog, King Cob, whelped in England in 1839, owned by Captain Daintree and the first public greyhound stud to be advertised.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Integrity Monthly Report Shane Gillard - General Manager, Integrity I’d like to open my dialogue with the Greyhound Racing Industry by saying that I am excited and enthusiastic about joining the team and feel privileged to be given such an important role at a critical time in the sport. I arrive at GRV after spending the past 12 years at WorkSafe, Victoria’s regulator for occupational health and safety. During my tenure at WorkSafe I held a number of different roles from Inspector through to the Head of Operations and Emergency Management. In this role I was responsible for more than 180 officers in locations around the State. My role at GRV as the General Manager of Integrity has oversight of all Stewarding, Operational Assurance, the Chief Veterinarian, Investigations and legal proceedings relating to enforcing the rules of racing. Of course, as the governing body for our great sport, we are only part of the picture when it comes to regulation. You, the participants, are the key stakeholders in the industry and must play your part to ensure the highest level of integrity across all facets of Greyhound Racing here in Victoria. To that end, we will be working hard to establish and maintain a strong connection with you, our partners, so that together we can stamp out the behaviours of yesteryear that will not be tolerated in our sport. If
you become aware of any suspicious activity, the investigations unit now has a 24hr/7 day a week toll free hotline 1300 856 109 available to report unethical behaviour. Rest assured that every report is treated with the highest level of confidentiality and only our investigations team have access to the information. There are a number of strategic projects underway at GRV that you will start to see progress on shortly if not already. Some of which include increasing our capacity to investigate race days and non-race days, our future Stewarding model and of course the swabbing regime. I’d like you to keep this in mind the next time you feel put out by a pre- or post-race swab or you’re part of an inquiry or investigation: the cost of regulation is the price we pay for a sustainable future, and for that I make no apologies. I endeavour to get around to as many tracks as possible in the coming months and look forward to meeting you and hearing about how, by working together, we can ensure that future generations get to enjoy the sport of greyhound racing here in Victoria.
“You, the participants, are the key stakeholders in the industry and must play your part to ensure the highest level of integrity across all facets of Greyhound Racing here in Victoria.” Shane Gillard, Integrity Monthly Report Update

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Club Development & Member Services Monthly Report Craig Armstead - General Manager Club Development & Member Services New GRV Clubs staff member In GRV’s recently updated strategic plan,‘Club Support’has been identified as one of the six priorities. There has been much consultation on the key activities to achieve this. To ensure GRV provide the best possible support to the Clubs we have created a new role of Club Support and Development Manager. I would like to welcome James McCallum in this role. James’key responsibilities are supporting the clubs with the execution of their programs, assisting to align with GRV plans and direction, and helping with growth and enhancement of the clubs connection within their local communities. On his appointment, James said “I am particularly looking forward to helping the clubs grow and expand their footprint in their communities. I have always enjoyed working within sporting groups, and love the enthusiasm that the participants bring to their sport.”
Q & A with Geelong GRA Manager David Hoey How long have you been at the club? Since mid-April 2015. How did you get into greyhound racing? One of the Geelong Board approached me to see if I might have some interest in the role of General Manager and after looking at the strengths & structure of the industry plus the quality of the Geelong facilities I was fortunate enough to be offered the position.
What is your clubs next big event? The Gold Cup on October 28th. What are your future plans for the club? We are building on the aesthetic improvements including more landscaping and grassing of outdoor social areas, plus looking at ways to engage the kids by increasing events across the year that engage families.
What is your professional background? I have a varied commercial background predominantly within the Commercial Radio industry, having spent 25 years as a General Manager of various radio stations across 3 states - NSW to Victoria and then to Tasmania. During my NSW years I had heavy involvement with Ag-Quip Field Days and the Tamworth Country Music Awards & Festival as part of my radio station management role. I moved to Geelong in 2008, taking some time off for fishing & watching too many movies, then I gained the role as General Manager of the Geelong Supercats basketball team (I have a basketball background). When do you race? The club races every Tuesday as a twilight event from around 3pm and every Friday night from 7pm. How many people do you employ on average for a race meeting? Approximately 17, some full-time, some part-time/casual. What are the biggest challenges facing your club? In addition to ensuring quality facilities and best practice prepared tracks for racing and trials on a weekly basis, it is ensuring the club delivers social engagement activities that can attract not only industry participants but also offer the non-traditional user somewhere different to enjoy a night out. We have excellent facilities and catering and need to find more ways to engage the broader community on race nights.

UPDATE Update & Pre-Entry Assessment Working towards full rehoming is a key focus for GRV. This is reflected in the new racing rules which require owners to make every effort to rehome retired greyhounds. The most common place for greyhounds to be re-homed is through friends, family and contacts of owners, trainers and other participants in the industry. GRV is committed to expanding and enhancing GAP as an important, but not the only, pathway to rehoming greyhounds. If you wish to book your greyhound in for a GAP pre-entry assessment, please ring GAP on 03 5799 0166. Bookings open at 9am. Please note that there are limited (16) places available in each pre-entry assessment session therefore the maximum number of greyhounds an individual may book per session is three (3).

Demons Footy Star Bernie Vince Visits GAP
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
The Merlino family with Sara
Greyhound Adoption Program ambassador Bernie Vince paid his first visit to Seymour last month and was very impressed with everything he saw. The AFL star enjoyed his tour of the GAP headquarters, and agreed that the dogs look as though they’re in their element. “It was a great trip down, and just the facilities are fantastic with really big kennels and interacting with a few of the dogs – I’ve loved it.” The popular Melbourne midfielder was given a tour of the grounds and was also showed how a number of the processes work, including assessments. Bernie will make a number of appearances as part of his partnership with GAP, and is expected to come along to the Royal Melbourne Show where GAP will have its own stand. GAP staff and volunteers will travel throughout Victoria to various agricultural and country shows from September through to December, and the first stop will be the Royal Melbourne Show. GAP will be located in the Channel 7 Family Fun Pavilion, from Saturday September 17 until Tuesday September 27. Specific locations for country shows where GAP will be can be found on the events calendar on GAP’s website. At all the shows people will be able to meet adopted greyhounds, and get information from volunteers about the greyhound breed and adoptions. GAP will be at the Geelong Show, the Bendigo Show, the Shepparton Show and more. The next adoption day will be at GAP headquarters on 23 October and Vince urges people to go along to find their next pet. “They’re great fun and very affectionate animals,” Vince said. “They make wonderful pets and I hope more and more people can come on board to give them a home.
James Merlino Welcomes a New Addition to his Family Deputy Premier James Merlino was one of many Victorians to welcome a new pet greyhound into their home following an Adoption Day on August 28. Mr Merlino and his family adopted Sara, a stunning blue greyhound who was one of 33 former racing greyhounds to be adopted into loving forever homes at what was the first ever Adoption Day held at the Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club. Hundreds of greyhound lovers showed their supported by ‘Liking’ a post on Mr Merlino’s Facebook page, which contained photos of Sara spending time with her new family. Among those to ‘Like’ the post was Premier Daniel Andrews.
