GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

CEO’S UPDATE The big news this month is a major reversal on the banning of greyhound racing in NSW. While this is good news for the thousands of people involved in greyhound racing in NSW, the strict new framework for the sport in that State is a clear reminder that we can’t let the pace of reform in Victoria slacken. GRV’s 2016 Annual Report lays out the challenges ahead and the goals that GRV has set to drive a major transformation of the sport. For the first time, GRV’s Annual Report provides figures for track injuries and euthanasia rates. They do not make for comfortable reading but GRV is releasing them as part of our commitment to being open and accountable and to provide benchmarks for measuring the progress of the reforms now underway. And GRV has commissioned an independent audit of its data capture and analysis capabilities so that we can build a much more detailed understanding of what factors are driving injury and euthanasia rates and so how to reduce them. As the Annual Report shows, significant progress has been made in reducing greyhound breeding with the number of pups whelped in Victoria falling more than 1700, or 32 per cent, compared to 2014/15 but it will take nearly two years for this reduction of litters to impact on euthanasia rates. And it will also take time to introduce a regulatory framework, engage and educate participants, improve breeding practices, make tracks safe and increase the overall re-homing capacity. Work is already well advanced on these issues and GRV is in a good position financially to deliver reform. GRV made a $5.3 million profit for 2015-16 and it will all be invested in animal welfare and integrity, including a $3.5 million expansion of GAP. There is also a $37 million fiveyear capital works plan to improve greyhound welfare, track safety and racing operations. The real and lasting change in Victoria however is being driven by strong and productive engagement between participants and GRV, the clubs and other stakeholders. Following the successful stakeholder engagement workshops earlier this year, two regional workshops were held each in Shepparton and Traralgon last month which generated more constructive proposals covering breeding, racing careers and re-homing. A third regional workshop will be held in Warrnambool on Tuesday, 8 November, at which we will no doubt learn even more from the industry participants. A further workshop is planned at the end of November for larger trainers and breeders to discuss their role in the reforms, Following significant input and comments by participants and stakeholders at these workshops and other forums held by GRV across the State throughout 2016, a new suite of rule changes is being proposed to build on animal welfare and race track initiatives put in place over the past year. The proposed changes will strengthen ownership and rehoming responsibilities, further restrict euthanasia, ensure education and socialisation of greyhounds, set a minimum age for breeding, require trainers to report health and injury issues, and require owners to report the death, transfer or re-homing of greyhounds. The changes cover Local Rule 42.6, an Australian first which was introduced earlier this year, that requires owners to make their best efforts in rehoming their greyhounds. It’s proposed to amend this this rule by clealry specifying the minimum GRV requirements for re-homing dogs and making it a serious offence heard by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board if owners fail

to meet these requirments. You can find out more about the proposed changes and make a submission about them at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/rules-of-racing/ Turning to greyhound racing and the community, I am really pleased when I see the industry, the clubs and the community link arms with GRV; and together we give, not only money, but a sense of passion and pride, through events such as the TAB Great Chase which culminated at The Meadows recently. For 14 years, The Great Chase has been one of the most popular, successful and important community campaigns in Victorian greyhound racing. GRV and its clubs have raised more than $500,000 for hundreds of community groups supporting the elderly and the intellectually and physically disabled. Over the past two months, every Victorian greyhound racing club has dedicated one race meeting in the TAB Great Chase Race Series to their local community groups. The groups were matched with greyhounds running on the day for the opportunity to share in a $2000 prize pool and enjoy the spectacle of greyhound racing. Each of these groups went into the draw to be matched to one of the eight dogs running in the final. The community group that draws the winning greyhound wins $10,000 and the other seven groups each win $2000 while everyone enjoys a fun filled day at the Meadows. Thanks to a wonderful run by Promises Kept, the McCallum Disability Services group now has $10,000 to invest in the fantastic work it is doing to help those less fortunate in the Ballarat community. Other developments in October included Heidi Lester joining GRV as Chief Steward. Heidi brings a wealth of experience having worked with RVL for many years and is a very experienced steward, have served as Chief Stipendiary Steward with the Macau Jockey Club. Karen Lees, who has done a great job of leading the Stewards department for the past 6 months, is now taking on the role of Business & Program Manager in GRV’s Integrity Business Unit to develop and advance our regulatory frameworks. I’m also pleased to announce the appointment of Emma Cotsell as our new Foster Care Manager, responsible for co-ordinating all foster care program activities at GAP. And finally I just want to mention some upcoming racing highlights for November. The popular Ready2Race Sales will return with the heats on 19 November and the finals on 24 November, with the auctions on 26 November. This year the Sales will have an increased focus on whole-of-life planning for the greyhounds up for auction. And of course, on 18 November, Sandown will again host the world’s richest greyhound race, the $600,000 Melbourne Cup and I hope to see you there.

Community Groups Join the Great Chase Nearly 100 local community groups shared in $44,000 in prize winnings during the 2016 TAB Great Chase Community Event while enjoying a great day out at the races. The groups, who work with the elderly and the intellectually and physically disabled, all took part in a series of Great Chase Community Days held at 10 greyhound racing clubs across Victoria over the past two months, culminating in the Great Chase Grand Final at the Meadows on 19 October. The Great Chase Community Days see Victoria’s greyhound racing clubs each dedicate one race meeting in the TAB Great Chase Race Series to their local community groups. The groups

BARBARA BACKHOY Shining Eagle Lights the Way

“Greyhounds were probably my first real babysitter.” That’s how long these animals have been part of Veterinarian Barbara Backhoy’s life. Words by Molly Haines

At the young age of 18, Barbara began what would become a lifelong career when she moved to Queensland to pursue her dream as a vet. “I think I will be in this industry for a very long time,” she said. With a childhood surrounded by greyhounds, Barbara said it was due to experiences with her first greyhound that prompted her to become a vet. “I had my first dog when I was about 12 years old,” she said. “I did pretty much all the training for her – she, Shining Eagle, was my little baby.” “With her, I visited vets and decided the vet industry is for me and I would work towards that goal.” Barbara studied for five years in Queensland during which time she came back to Melbourne for placement at Sandown Park Greyhound Racing Club.

“I remember walking through the steward’s room and introducing myself as the vet for the day, and a few of the stewards had recognised me but they just weren’t 100 per cent sure,” she said. Following two and a half years at Sandown, Barbara embarked on a working holiday where she experienced life as a vet in the UK before returning to work at Karingal Vet Hospital, then the Cranbourne Greyhound Club. Barbara was also fortunate enough to experience the greyhound industry in Ireland when she travelled there as part of a GRV group called Young Chaser. “While I was there I spent time with some greyhound vets, as well as meeting several of the trainers,” she said. “I spent time looking at a few of the tracks including Harold Cross and Shelbourne Park, and one of the trainers that I met had a finalist in the Irish Derby which ended up winning the race.” While this experience will always stand out for Barbara, nothing can overshadow the pleasure her first greyhound, Shining Eagle aka Lassy, gave her. Barbara said the main highlight during her time in the industry has been interacting with the dogs. “Their nature is so easy, you can do nearly anything with them,” she said.

“That was how I got my first job,” she said.

“All they want is affection.”

Now, with 15 years of experience behind her, Barbara can still remember her first day on the ground and said she felt grateful for her greyhound background.

“The greyhounds do actually love to run – so you can’t take that away from them.”

Upgrade for Ballarat The Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club has undergone a major facelift following a funding announcement made by The Minister for Racing the Honourable Martin Pakula at the club last week. The Minister attended the club last Wednesday to announce $170,000 in funding which will go towards an upgrade for the club’s function centre. He also unveiled a new children’s playground. Greyhound Racing Victoria threw its support behind the application from the club for an upgrade to its facilities, which was granted through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund (VRIF). This will include improvements to furniture and fittings in the patron area, such as carpet, as well as new tables and chairs. More than 160 new chairs, 17-round tables, 10 bar tables and 15 window seating tables will complete the clubs new look, and maximise the members and publics experience at the venue. The Minister also officially opened a new pre-assessment facility in Mount Mercer earlier that day, which formed part of the Greyhound Adoption Programs continued plans for growth. “This is not just a good day for greyhound racing, but it’s a great day for Ballarat and the surrounding areas as well,” MP Pakula said. “Regional racing venues are social hubs for local communities and we’re proud to be investing in new upgrades to ensure they can be enjoyed for years to come.” The Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club races every Monday of each week, and is one of 13 greyhound racing clubs in Victoria, 11 of which are regional. Club President Alf King said the upgrades, combined with the new playground, will maximise the experience at the club for all who attend. “Refurbishing our function centre and installing a playground will enhance the family-friendly entertainment we can offer our patrons,” he said. “We are thankful for the support of the Victorian Government, which will ensure that our club remains a hub for entertainment in the region.”

Strategic Communication & Marketing Monthly Report Louise Martin - General Manager, Strategic Communication & Marketing This month has been another success in shining a light on the fantastic contribution Victorian greyhound racing makes to the community. We saw The TAB Great Chase campaign reach its culmination with Promises Kept taking out The Great Chase, which sees $10,000 go to McCallum Disability Services to help those in need. The TAB Great Chase has been a big part of Victorian greyhound racing for 14 years, with more than $500,000 raised for community organisations involved in helping the elderly or the intellectually and physically disabled. Our clubs in the community project continues to go full steam ahead with some fantastic stories coming out of every single club. We will see these stories come to life in the very near future as we continue to highlight the important role greyhound racing has in providing employment and, in many cases, a sense of purpose to people in various communities right throughout Victoria. Many of these communities are in the Gippsland area and will for the first time be brought together in the Gippsland Challenge to be run from Christmas through the first couple of months of 2017. This concept will bring together the Sale, Traralgon, Warragul and Cranbourne Cups and will be a major project for the Strategic Communications and Marketing team over the next few months. Our new GAP testing facility in Mt Mercer was officially opened by the Victorian Racing Minister, Martin Pakula. The new facility is another development in line with our renewed emphasis on animal welfare as the number one priority for Greyhound Racing Victoria. The opening received plenty of positive media coverage, with the minister speaking in support of the direction taken by Victorian greyhound racing.

Racing, Wagering & Business Development Monthly Report Stuart Laing - General Manager, Racing, Wagering & Business Development HORSHAM TRACK TEMPORARY CLOSURE FOR RENOVATIONS

NEW STRUCTURE FOR 2016 READY 2 RACE

The Horsham Greyhound Racing Club will be temporarily closed for racing and trialling while major remedial works are undertaken to replace ageing infrastructure at the track. The works will include the track being resurfaced, upgraded and widened in sections, along with the replacement of the perimeter fence and installation of a new lure rail system. Other important works will also be completed during this period, including the installation of a new lure braking motor, a new set of starting boxes, upgrading of the irrigation system and installation of a new catching pen gate. The completion of these remedial works will ensure racing can be conducted safely at the existing track, whilst details are being sorted through with the Club and Horsham Rural City Council on the development of plans for greyhound racing and training in Horsham in the future. Whilst discussions are in their infancy regarding a potential relocation or re-development of the Horsham track it is anticipated that the completion of any major development works could be at least two to three years away. The scope of current remedial works being undertaken will wherever possible include options to be able to reuse or relocate the infrastructure. We appreciate that the decision to close the track for these urgent works was made at short notice and has caused inconvenience for the regular users of the Horsham track. GRV and the Horsham Greyhound Racing Club will work together with contractors to ensure that the temporary closure of the track is kept to a minimum and we will continue to communicate progress with participants on an ongoing basis.

An unprecedented 270 nominations were received for the 2016 Ready 2 Race (R2R) Sales and therefore to accommodate the largest number of greyhounds possible, this year’s R2R will take on a new format, with the event to run across three days instead of two, culminating in a Gala Auction Night on Saturday 26 November at the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association. For the first time, the auction will be held on a day separate to the racing, and will also incorporate a night-time auction for the 50 fastest performers in the heats. Saturday 19 November - HEATS: All greyhounds trial once in a four-dog field. Thursday 24 November - FINALS: Greyhounds again trial once in a four-dog field. Videos of all heats and finals will be uploaded to grv.org.au within 24 hours of the events. Saturday 26 November - AUCTION: Greyhounds which competed in a heat and final will be in attendance on the day to parade before going to auction. The fastest 50 performers from the heats will be saved for the night ‘Gala’ auction. Saturday 26 November - ‘GALA’ AUCTION: The 50 fastest performers from the heats will parade before being auctioned, subject to them also competing in a final. All persons wishing to purchase greyhounds at the R2R Sales, must be a registered owner with GRV and a registered bidder for the Sale, and must be in attendance to bid for these greyhounds. Refer to the important notices for purchases and the Terms & Conditions sections of the catalogue which is now available online at grv.org.au to find out how to become a registered bidder.

The Tuesday twilight Full Stakes Provincial meetings normally held at Horsham will be allocated on a rotation between Warrnambool, Bendigo and Ballarat until works are complete.

GOTBA News The 2016 Annual General Meeting will be held at Sandown GRC on Sunday November 6, starting at 6.00 pm The AGM will review GOTBA business for the year and elect Committee members. Only members are eligible to attend - however new members can join and pay on the night. A light supper will be provided after the AGM. Animal Welfare Monthly Report Gavin Goble - General Manager, Animal Welfare During October, GRV continued its successful stakeholder workshop series, moving its focus to regional Victoria. The first two regional workshops were held on 5 October in Shepparton and 13 October in Traralgon, and provided participants with an overview and opportunity to comment on key topics including: breeding, rearing, racing and rehoming. Both workshops were lively with participants offering new ideas and viewpoints not identified in the ten metropolitan workshops. A final regional workshop is scheduled for Tuesday 8 November at Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club. The Racing Minister, the Hon. Martin Pakula MP officially opened the new GAP facility at Mt Mercer on 5 October. This new facility significantly increases GRV’s capacity to process greyhounds for adoption. GRV also made some changes to the way participants book greyhounds in for a GAP pre-entry assessment. The new system allows participants to book spaces in the testing sessions by simply emailing or phoning Member Services at any time, rather than being limited to phoning at 9.00am on Tuesday mornings. Once the sessions are booked out, greyhounds will be placed on a managed waiting list which will provide participants with an estimate of how long they will need to wait until they are able to secure a space. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information package has been written (available at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing/) to assist in transitioning racing greyhounds to pets, and will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. GRV’s welfare capacity expanded significantly in October with the appointment of a new Foster Manager and ten new Welfare Inspectors (taking the Animal Welfare Inspection Unit to 18). The Foster Manager will be tasked with significantly expanding GRV’s foster program and increasing our capacity to process and re-home greyhounds. The new Welfare Inspectors will commence in November, substantially increasing GRV’s capacity to help participants achieve the best welfare outcomes for their greyhounds. Education is also a priority and we are currently recruiting for an Education Manager who will develop and drive participant education and training with a focus on welfare. The Education Manager will lead the team of three Education Officers (previously called Advisory Support Officers or ASOs) who will be instrumental in supporting participants to evolve their activities and improve greyhound welfare. GRV is currently working closely with club managers, committees and track curators on key initiatives at each track to improve track safety. This is a collaborative approach where GRV and the Clubs are jointly and critically reviewing track injury data and developing individual plans for each track aimed at achieving an ongoing reduction in injuries. We have also taken a direct approach with On-Track Veterinarians to obtain their advice on improvement opportunities.

10

Finally, GRV is preparing to make further changes to the racing rules to enhance welfare outcomes for greyhounds, which will be open to public consultation in November. Should you have any feedback or suggestions regarding welfare initiatives or opportunities please email me direct at ggoble@grv.org.au.

In the Family by Bridget Scott WITH an involvement in the racing industry stemming more than 70 years, it is safe to say that greyhound veteran Aida Spitty has seen some changes in her lifetime. Her earliest memories of the sport include taking her father’s dogs for a run as she rode her bike. A famous name around the Geelong region, Ms Spitty’s father Hugh Emerson has a race named in his honour which is held each year to commemorate his significant contribution to the sport. The latest race, run two weeks ago, was claimed by locally trained greyhound, Fulton Bale. Each year, Ms Spitty donates a prize to the winner of the race named after her father. Friend and fellow member of the Geelong Greyhound Racing Club (GGRC) Maurie Blair said the annual event was well regarded by the entire community. “It’s always been looked forward to by many people in the industry, and it’s very worthwhile,” Mr Blair said. Mr Emerson began his career with the dogs back in the 1940’s and finished up as a life member of the GGRC, as is his daughter. A keen punter, Ms Spitty takes to the track at Geelong every Friday to be part of something that always been a huge part of her life. She admitted there have been plenty of changes, as well as a lot of new faces. “I come along every Friday, and some Tuesdays – I love punting and love the dogs, Ms Spitty said. “There’s not a lot of the old lot left now. There’ve been lots of changes, tracks and all.” Like his daughter, Mr Emerson also witnessed various changes and was a member of both greyhound tracks which existed in Geelong before Beckley Park. “He was a member of the first one which was at Melton Park, a pace makers track, where he provided greyhounds for this, and was on the committee at Corio Oval when the meetings were held there,” Mr Blair said. Ms Spitty has fond memories of her father, who she described as a hard worker. “He was always at the working bees, and was the longest serving director for Geelong at the time,” she said. “He was a farmer who wanted to talk to everybody.” Ms Spitty can be found at the club most weeks, a stranger to none and always among good company.

Promise Keeps Darren’s Dream Alive by Gerard Guthrie When her fiancée Darren Haffenden was seriously ill with pancreatic cancer earlier this year Faith Martin made two promises. Faith promised Darren their three-year-old son Joshua would know the kind of man his father was and also that she would give a talented young greyhound, which Darren had bred and reared, every opportunity to fulfil his potential on the racetrack. Sadly, Darren passed away in May at just 52 and didn’t get to see the dog race. However, Faith kept her promise and Darren’s confidence has been vindicated, with the aptly named Promises Kept winning six of his nine starts, recently adding the Group 2 TAB Great Chase at The Meadows to his name. “Darren did all the rearing with the litter and he always knew that Promises Kept was a pretty special sort of dog. There was just something about him,” explained Faith, who races Promises Kept in partnership with her mother Annette. “When Darren got sick I promised him that I would do everything I could to get the best out of Promises Kept and also that our son Joshua would know what kind of man Darren was, so that’s how Promises Kept got his name. “It’s been a horrible year but I’m trying not to dwell on it too much and keep looking for the positives. We really love the greyhounds and we’ve been rapt with what Promises Kept has been able to do so far. Joe Borg has done a great job with him – he’s such a patient trainer – and he’s been a great friend as well. “When Promises Kept won his semi-final of the Great Chase I thought it’s a damn shame that Darren isn’t here to share it but we’re so proud of the dog for making the final. A couple of months ago I would’ve found it very hard to talk about but now it’s nice to be able to share the story.”

Promises Kept comes from the most humble of origins – in fact, they don’t get any more humble - being the result of Darren Haffenden’s inspired gamble on a giveaway brood female called Little Miss Mary and a free service to Premier Boloney. “It just goes to show that the breeding of a greyhound is a raffle when a free service to a giveaway brood female produces a dog like Promises Kept,” Joe Borg said. “He’s a very nice dog and he’s coming along very nicely. He’s a very keen chaser with a real will to win. “I deliberately took the harder route to the Great Chase by starting him in the heats at The Meadows because I believe to win this race you’ve got to have experience at The Meadows and he basically knows every grain of sand at the track now.” It was a fairy tale finish in more ways than one at The Meadows with a crowd of around 500 people witnessing Promises Kept finish first across the line to claim victory in the TAB Great Chase on 19 October. “The story behind this dog is just incredible, and I am absolutely wrapped for the dog, and the family,” Joe said. “He is a really hard chaser and the dog wants it, and that’s the difference.”

A Calling for Calling By Molly Haines There is no greater compliment in the world of race calling than being recognised by one of the sport’s most respected callers. RSN race caller Matt Jackson was lucky enough to have Peter Eustace, who just celebrated 50 years as a race caller, single him out as having a very bright future in the sport. “It is pretty humbling but it’s not the first thing I would say about myself because I think I still have a long way to go. For Peter to say what he did is a great honour because there are some terrific young callers around at the moment,” Matt Jackson said. “I do feel a bit of pressure now though!” Unlike many race callers Matt Jackson didn’t grow up with greyhounds, but he did have a love for racing in general, which started his career calling harness races. “I call all three codes now but I don’t have a favourite which keeps my mind pretty sharp,” Matt explained. “I like that there is no routine with calling and hardly anything goes to plan. You can spend all the time in the world studying the form but once the boxes open its anyone’s guess!” On 1 August 2012 Matt Jackson called his first greyhound race at the Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club, which would go on to be his home away from home. In Matt’s four years calling the majority of Shepparton’s meetings he has been lucky enough to call the Group Two $67,000 Shepparton Cup and build a relationship with club manager and breeder Carl McGrath.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

“There is a bit of preparation in calling the races; the previous day I study the form and then I send my tips into the TAB; it can take up to eight hours to do the form,” Matt explained. Throughout his four years calling greyhound races Matt Jackson has had the likes of Peter Eustace and Greg Miles to look up to but none have been more helpful than greyhound racing’s Rob Testa. “After an attack on social media following a comment I made whilst calling a race I went to Rob Testa for help to deal with the situation. Rob told me that as a race caller we aren’t the main attraction, the greyhounds are the athletes and we are just adding to the experience.” Matt called his first Group One race in January, calling Midwinter home in a blowout victory in the $145,000 Silver Chief at The Meadows. Two months later he called the mighty Dyna Double One in his effortless Group One $108,000 Rockie Rebel win also at The Meadows. “I didn’t expect to be calling group races, I really didn’t think it would happen so soon!” “I expected to get really nervous before them, but I think because I had seven other races to focus on beforehand it helped ease my nerves.” Although calling two group one races at The Meadows is high on Matt’s list of achievements, calling Victoria’s Greyhound of The Year, Fernando Bale, was a standout. “Getting to call Fernando Bale was a fantastic experience because he is hands down the greatest dog I have ever seen.”

Experience Counts For Plenty as Aston Bolero Wins Shepparton Cup By Andrew Copley Aston Bolero showed that experience counts for plenty when he took out the Group 2 Shepparton Cup (450m). The black sprinter, who was the most experienced greyhound in the $67,000 final with 58 starts to his name (35 wins), secured the fourth Shepparton Cup for trainer Jason Thompson. Thompson had the three favourites in the race, with Aston Bolero paying $4.30 when defeating the fast-finishing American Monster ($9.20) and Shima Song ($32.20) in a spectacular finish. The Peacerdale trainer was surprised that Aston Bolero was third in the line of betting during the week behind his other finalists Invictus Rapid and Sleek Master. “I’ve been saying all week that Aston Bolero is my best chance,” Thompson said. “He’s won 35 races including the Bendigo Cup, so he was the most proven dog in the race.” Aston Bolero made amends for his last placing in the last

14 Shepparton Cup, run in February, when he was the favourite.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Talk

with Mark Duclos

For greyhound fans, the month of November is when Santa Claus comes early! Coming off the back of a thrilling G1 Sky Racing Topgun at The Meadows, the spotlight now focuses on Sandown Park with the running of the G3 Shootout on Friday November 4, and then the following two weeks will see the commencement and finale of the G1 Bold Trease as well as the world’s richest greyhound race, the G1 TAB Melbourne Cup worth a mammoth $420,000 to the eventual winner. I’m often asked, ‘what is the best race or best dog you’ve ever seen?’ and given that my greyhound media career stretches back nearly 30 years, it’s not an easy task to separate some great champions of the track that I’ve been lucky enough to witness in all their glory. I still marvel at the pure speed of Brother Fox who created a world record when I was at the now defunct Harold Park track in 1984 and to my mind, he is the fastest one-turn greyhound I’ve ever seen. The hardest chaser and best race greyhound I’ve seen at the elite level is undoubtedly Rapid Journey. I can still remember the frenzy that he created after claiming the Melbourne Cup and then took out the Topgun at his last ever race start at Sandown Park in December 1998, en-route to setting a new world record for prizemoney earnings of more than $530,000, a tally which stood for more than ten years. Last year’s Melbourne Cup was undoubtedly one of the greatest races I have ever seen. The champion, Fernando Bale, missed the start from box 6 but somehow drove through the pack to lead down the back straight but hot on his heels was his kennelmate, Dyna Double One. I can still hear the cheers from the crowd as these two champion chasers turned for home and it never abated, as Dyna Double One claimed victory in the final few strides. As an owner, I’m still dreaming of winning a Melbourne Cup and like so many of you, I don’t think I’ll ever give up on that dream. AT THE BOXES Don’t forget to catch our new preview programme every Wednesday night at 6pm on Sky Racing2 (channel 527). I’m joined by multiple G1 winning trainer Jamie Ennis, as well as race caller Tim Newbold and Dave Stanley from the TAB Fixed Odds team, as we preview the Quaddie legs from Sandown Park each week as well as the upcoming feature greyhound events. Good luck and Good Punting

A regular look back at the history and heritage of greyhound racing The Warrnambool Warrior Back in the winter of 1985, Warrnambool trainer Norm McCullagh was breaking in a young pup called Roy, whelped in March the year before. At first Roy didn’t seem that promising but McCullagh persevered and soon found he had a champion on his hands, now called Bold Trease. Initially he performed well as a sprinter, winning his maiden, the 450m at Warrnambool in a very impressive 26.10sec. But it was as a stayer that Bold Trease became one of the all-time great racers. During his five-year career, he raced 104 times for 51 wins, 22 seconds, 12 thirds with prize money totalling $127,600. But the bare statistics tell only part of the story that made him one of Australia’s most loved racers. It was his ability to consistently drop back in his races, tail the field, then with less than a lap to go, charge ahead to win which made for many thrilling runs. Bold Trease’s career highlights included taking the Ballarat 735m record twice (43.82sec and 42.90sec), the 1987 Association Cup, the Navy Day Trophy, the Coca-Cola Distance Final and the Victorian National Distance Championship. And, of course, winning Australia’s premier distance event, the Group 1 Sandown Cup, four years in a row between 1986 and 1989, was an outstanding achievement by any sporting standards and unlikely ever to be equalled. Judged Greyhound of the Year in 1987 and Greyhound of the Decade 1980-1990, Bold Trease retired and then in 1991, lost his fight with bone cancer. He lives on though as one of the all-time greats, with Australia’s richest stayers race named after him, the $100,000 Group One Bold Trease Carnival Cup. The owners and trainers of the dogs running in this year’s Cup on 18 November at Sandown will be very glad the race is only named after him and that the Warrnambool Warrior is not once again coming from behind to beat them all.

Integrity Monthly Report Shane Gillard - General Manager, Integrity Now that I am a few months into my position as GRV’s General Manager for Integrity, I have a much clearer view of what’s needed as we work to ensure a sustainable future for the sport. And while we are making progress there is much more we need to do to in reforming the sport so we can continue to enjoy it for generations to come.

prohibited and controlled substances before the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board and many others ready to proceed. The lesson here that needs to be more clearly understood is that if you’re not sure about the contents of a substance, whether it be a supplement or medication, don’t use it until first talking with your veterinarian.

As I’m sure you are aware, GRV has dramatically stepped up its screening and analysis program for prohibited substances. This unprecedented level of testing is part of a deliberate strategy to keep the sport clean and provide a level playing field for all. From what I have seen so far, the majority of participants are keen to do the right thing and play by the rules. However, there is still a minority who are using substances that are either prohibited or have strict thresholds when the dogs receiving them are in competition. There may be a thought that detection can be avoided, but this is not the case with our increased testing program. We now have a significant number of cases dealing with

I was recently speaking with a long-standing and highly-regarded participant, whose dog had returned positive swabs from what he thought to be an innocuous treatment. His message for fellow participants was not to race any greyhound treated with any medicine without getting advice from their vet and to remember that ignorance of the rules is no excuse. Now, more than ever, it’s vital for participants to exercise great caution when medically treating racing greyhounds and make sure all treatments do not contravene the rules covering the use of substances. So again, if you are not sure about any treatment, please consult your vet first to make sure your dog will be fit, clean and ready to race.

GRV Flags Rule Changes in Victoria to Improve Animal Welfare Outcomes GRV is proposing a suite of rule changes aimed at significantly improving animal outcomes which build on many of the animal welfare and race track initiatives put in place over the past year. These rules will tighten ownership and re-homing responsibilities, further restrict euthanasia, ensure education and socialisation of greyhounds, set a minimum age for breeding, require trainers to report health and injury issues, and require owners to report the death, transfer or re-homing of greyhounds. A key enhancement under the proposed suite of rule changes includes a strengthening of local rule 42.6 - an Australian first rule introduced earlier this year and which requires owners to make best efforts to rehome their greyhound. Under the proposed changes, GRV’s expectations regarding the minimum efforts required by owners to rehome their dogs are to be clearly specified and participants who fail to satisfy these enhanced requirements will commit a serious offence leading to prosecution through the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board. The rule changes were developed following significant input and comments from participants and stakeholders at forums and workshops held by GRV across the State throughout 2016. “Many of these enhancements have been raised by participants in the greyhound racing industry at the 15 workshops GRV has held across Victoria to engage with our stakeholders as we work together to ensure a strong future for Victorian greyhound racing,” GRV CEO Alan Clayton said. “The fact that participants are proposing significant changes aimed at improving animal welfare outcomes further supports that cultural change is occuring in Victoria’s greyhound racing industry.” All participants and members of the community are invited to make a submission on the proposed changes by 5pm, Wednesday November 23, 2016. The proposed amendments and details on how to make a submission can be found at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/rules-of-racing

Club Development & Member Services Monthly Report Craig Armstead - General Manager Club Development & Member Services Horsham track upgrade As part of our commitment to animal welfare, the safety of our staff, and to providing the best greyhound racing experience for our participants, a major upgrade to the Horsham Greyhound Racing Club’s track has commenced. The works are extensive, including the installation of new starting boxes, improvements to the catching pen, a major upgrade and rebuild and widening of the track surface, along with the installation of a new lure rail and outside perimeter fence. Our objective is to minimise the inconvenience for participants and we will continue to communicate with progress updates. The Tuesday twilight Full Stakes Provincial meetings normally held at Horsham will be allocated on a rotation between Warrnambool, Bendigo and Ballarat until works are complete. Transfer of judges from Clubs to GRV staff Commencing on Monday 3rd October, the employment of race day judging staff was transferred from the individual race clubs to GRV. To ensure the public have the greatest confidence in the

integrity of greyhound racing, it was decided that judges should be considered in the same way as we do for race day stewards and become employees of GRV. The purpose and structure of their roles has not changed, it is purely that they have a different employer. Shepparton Cup The Shepparton Cup attracted a great crowd on the night of 24th of September. Not only were the crowds able to watch greyhound racing, they could also enjoy a game of AFL footy on a big screen and lots of other activities. ‘With the Cup organisation, I wanted to ensure that it was a night for everyone to enjoy, we had a kids zone with plenty of fun activities and free giveaways, a live band playing, which was a hit and the crowd really enjoyed having the GAP dogs on course’, said Carl McGrath, Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club Manager. But the biggest attraction was the presence of AFL VIP guests, Steele Sidebottom and Levi Greenwood from the Collingwood Football Club.

Greyhounds are My Life The Clubs in their Communities project, which encompasses all 13 Victorian greyhound clubs, has collected many wonderful stories from the people in the greyhound racing industry. GRV staff have met and spoken to people who have a long, rich, vibrant and often tender narrative that will be valued and celebrated through Greyhounds are my Life. GRV’s aim with this large-scale, multimedia project is to provide avenues for participant’s voices to be heard, for their unique stories to be broadcast and their faces to be seen. Greyhounds are my Life will share the familial, social and emotional fabric that connects greyhound racing with their communities and makes the Clubs such vital, integral hubs throughout Victoria. The public will see and hear all the stories across all broadcast platforms – websites, social media and video using the successful Every Greyhound has a Story as its model. Greyhounds are my Life will communicate the values of everyone involved in every aspect of greyhound racing to show the broader community how the sport impacts people on a real, every day, human scale.

NOVEMBER 2016

Q & A with Bendigo GRA Manager Troy Harley How long have you been at the club? I started at Bendigo in February 2011, so approaching six years – some of that time I jointly managed Bendigo and Shepparton as well as working with GRV and other Clubs for a period of time. I have been focused solely on managing Bendigo for just over two years. How did you get into greyhound racing? I am from a racing family, involved in all three codes, but was exposed to greyhound racing as a youngster, with my Dad being the broadcaster at several tracks in the NSW Hunter Valley and owned greyhounds - I also had two great uncles who trained. Mum was the Secretary at Singleton Greyhounds for a while as well. I used to spend school holidays helping legendary NSW trainer Ken Cheetham with his dogs (alternating between champion jockey Robert Thompson and his father Arthur’s racing stables). These days, aside from work, my wife is a breeder, owner and trainer and the kids love the dogs (and horses!) so my professional career and the family hobby cross paths 24/7. What is your professional background? I commenced working at greyhound race meetings at Singleton from the age of 12 in the prices room (and ended up Manager there 13 years later) and various race day roles at the gallops and harness meetings in the Hunter and Central Coast from 15. While doing my HSC I worked in the race day office at Newcastle gallop and greyhound meetings and at the end of my schooling I took up an offer to skip uni and start at the Newcastle Jockey Club as assistant racing manager – at the time the NJC controlled 2 thoroughbred tracks (Broadmeadow and Cessnock) and a greyhound track (Beaumont Park). The NJC was a very progressive Club and I was involved in some terrific promotions in both

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

codes on and off the track – and I have been fortunate to be involved in some magnificent events since, in the various roles I have had. Luckily for me, I have spent 20 of the past 26 years in racing administration in greyhounds and thoroughbreds in NSW and Victoria, mostly in Club management but also as regional manager for Racing NSW (thoroughbreds). I have also done extensive media work - in print, radio and TV, including working for Sky Channel for both greyhounds and thoroughbreds, as well as co-hosting a sports show on ABC radio in Newcastle – in opposition to one my father hosted on another station! And I have done some race calling over the years as well. When do you race? Every Wednesday and Friday afternoon with the odd Saturday and Sunday meeting for feature events. How many people do you employ at the club on a race day? Between 10 and 15 depending on any events and promotions. What are the biggest challenges facing your club? Aside from overall industry challenges, like all Clubs the increased competition for disposable income and corporate investment is a challenge for revenue streams in the future and we need to ensure we are diverse enough to combat those challenges. What is Bendigo’s next big event? The annual Ready 2 Race auction at the end of November. What are your future plans for the club? We are about to commence the next phase of our training facility that will see Bendigo become one of the best training centres in the country. The Club is also in discussions with the local Council about buying land to develop as training properties and we are hoping to redevelop the old trackside café into another state-ofthe-art facility for our bigger than normal race days.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Best in Show People throughout Victoria are getting a chance to meet a greyhound for the first time as GAP continues appearing at agricultural shows across the State. Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) volunteers and GRV staff have attended the community events as part of a bid to spread the word about the gentle nature that greyhounds have and what fantastic pets they make.

This is where GAP will be appearing: Melton Pet Expo – Saturday 5 November Ballarat Show – Friday 4 November, Saturday 5 November & Sunday 6 November

The ‘show season’ runs from September through to November, with the Shepparton Show, Mornington Peninsula Pet’s Day Out, Geelong Show and Better Homes and Gardens Show already complete.

Bayside Pet Expo – Sunday 13 November

The Royal Melbourne Show kicked the tour off, and was a huge success, giving the public the opportunity to get up close and personal with the placid breed.

Traralgon Show – Saturday 26 November & Sunday 27 November

The objective of the tour is to educate all Victorians about the true nature of greyhounds and how adaptable they are to any home environment, as well provide information on adoptions and fostering.

Mitchell Shire Pet Expo – Saturday 19 November Lilydale Show – Sunday 20 November

Big Dogs Day Out – Sunday 11 December

A Gem Found at the Seymour Adoption Day By Molly Haines. Over 200 people flocked to the picturesque Seymour on Sunday 23 October, despite a chilly 15-degree day, to meet and greet some special greyhounds who were looking for their forever homes. 24-year-old Emily Johnstone (pictured with Ruby) found out about the Seymour Adoption Day through the Greyhound Adoption Program website after friends recommended a greyhound for her as a pet because of their quiet nature and short hair. “I couldn’t be happier with how the day went. Everything went smoothly and everyone I spoke to on the day where so helpful which made the process fun and easy!” Emily explained. “I was looking for a young dog with a different colour coat and I was introduced to Ruby.” Emily, an animal attendant, fostered Ruby with the view to adopt which involves a trial period to see how Ruby adapts to her new lifestyle. “Ruby is with me right now and I couldn’t be happier... She will definitely be staying with us!” Although the trip to Seymour was a two-hour drive from Emily’s home of Narre Warren, she said the road trip was well and truly worth it. Louise Martin, General Manager, Strategic Communication & Marketing at GRV said 40 greyhounds were re-homed on the day. “Seymour is only an hour and a half out of Melbourne and is a great opportunity for potential owners to bring their current pets for a meet and greet which is unlike our other adoption days,” Louise explained. “Everyone who attended the day was very impressed with the facilities and how well the day was organised.”

The trainer had undertaken elective tests and nominated the greyhound relying on a not detected result. The RADB determined that in the exceptional circumstances of the case it was appropriate merely to record a find-ing of guilty but to impose no penalty. The greyhound, Time No Money, is disqualified from the race. Stephen Creighton - RADB Hearing 21/09/2016 - failed to present the greyhound ‘Narralee’ free of any prohibited substance (Procaine) for an event at Bendigo on 15 April 2016. The RADB determined the appropriate penalty should be a $1,000 fine with $500 of that fine being suspended. In addition, ‘Narralee’ is disqualified from the race.

Lisa Cockerell - RADB Hearing 14/09/2016 - two charges in respect to GAR 83(1A) and (2) for administer-ing a prohibited substance (Cobalt greater than 100 nanograms per millilitre) and failing to present the greyhound ‘Rolanda Hooch’ for an event at Sandown on 13 December 2015. Further two charges against GAR 83(1A) and (2) for administering a prohibited substance and failing to present the grey-hound ‘Polijuice Potion’ for an event at Sandown on 13 December 2015.

CHRIS SIME

25-Mar-14

Disqualified Indefinitely

The Board imposed a period of disqualification on each of the 4 charges and ordered the periods of disqualification in relation to charges 2, 3 and 4 run concurrently with the period of disqualification in relation to charge 1. The last 12 months of the disqualification in relation to charge 1 were suspended. Mrs Cockerell was ordered to serve an effective period of 3 months’ disqualification. The greyhounds ‘Rolanda Hooch’ and ‘Polijuice Potion’ are disqualified from the races. Graham Carr - RADB Hearing 19/09/2016 did administer a prohibited substance (GAR 83 (1A) and failed to present the greyhound (GAR 83 (2) ‘Run Plebbie Run’ for an event at Warragul on 7 April 2016. Fur-ther two charges in respect to administering a prohibited substance and failing to present the grey-hound ‘Milly O’Muffin’ for an event at Traralgon on 25 April 2016. The RADB determined a period of 12 months’disqualification with 3 months of that period suspended should be imposed regarding the Run Plebbie Run matter. The period of disqualification for the Milly O’Muffin matter was the same but ordered to l be served concurrent with the period of disqualification in the Run Plebbie Run matter. In addition, “Run Plebbie Run” and Milly O’Muffin were disqualified from the races. Benjamin Englund - RADB Hearing 19/09/2016 - failed to present the greyhound ‘Wynburn Alpha’ free of any prohibited substance (Fludrocortisone) for an event at Sandown on 28 February 2016. The RADB imposed a fine of $1,500 with $500 of that fine being suspended. In addition, “Wynburn Alpha” is dis-qualified from the race. [GRV queries the power of the RADB to suspend a fine and will prepare an appropriate submission should the situation arise again]

11 FEB 2017

Greyhound Racing Victoria is making history by launching its first carnival to showcase and connect the four greyhound racing cups in Gippsland. The Gippsland Carnival aims to provide new opportunities for participants and attract new fans to the sport by allowing people to follow greyhounds across the four cups in Sale, Warragul, Cranbourne and Traralgon in two new racing series, with the champion greyhounds being crowned at the Traralgon Cup. The best performers across both the sprint and distance series will share bonus prize money totalling $35,000.

25 MAR 2017

There will be plenty of colour and movement for the whole family to enjoy including colourful greyhounds, colourful characters and colourful fun. Fashion enthusiasts will have the opportunity to frock up and model in the Colours on Course fashion show. The Gippsland Carnival will be heavily promoted throughout Victoria on television, newspapers and radio. It will also be featured throughout TAB outlets during the carnival. The Gippsland Carnival, which runs from December 2016 until March 2017, kicks off with the Sale Cup on Boxing Day.
