GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
CEO’S UPDATE The release of Victorian track injury and euthanasia rates for the first time, in Greyhound Racing Victoria’s (GRV) 2015-16 Annual Report, attracted negative comments, particularly on social media, as GRV anticipated it would. But we are committed to being transparent and accountable and the figures for the last financial year, while quite unacceptable, at least provide a clear benchmark for the industry’s progress in achieving re-homing of dogs bred for racing. I am pleased to report that since July 2015, there seems to be a significant decrease in euthanasia rates and an increase in re-homing rates. This fall is being driven by a real and fundamental cultural shift within the sport, one that’s captured both in these figures and in the discussions that GRV staff and myself are having with participants. There is an increasing focus on owner accountability and better financial planning to manage the whole of life cycle of the dogs. It’s vital that we sustain this momentum if we want ensure that animal welfare is at the heart of the sport and that we do so as a real collaboration between owners and GRV. There are still many issues to tackle here such as improving breeding practices, reinforcing the responsibilities of owners and making sure all ex-racing dogs are as well prepared as possible to enter GAP and other re-homing agencies. And to further improve re-homing outcomes, GAP is significantly expanding its foster care program with more resources and the appointment of a dedicated manager for the program. Speaking of collaboration, GRV has received some very positive submissions in response to a proposed suite of rule changes to improve animal welfare, which includes strengthening local rule 42.6 which requires owners to make best efforts to rehome their greyhound. GRV will announce the next steps in this process later this month, along with further refinements of its hot weather and animal transport policies as summer heats up. On the racing front, the 2016 Melbourne Cup, now in its 60th year, was once again a showcase for Australia’s best greyhounds and a great time was had by all as Ando’s Mac beat an outstanding field to win the world’s richest greyhound race. Looking ahead, GRV is introducing an innovative new approach to staging and promoting country racing through the 2016/17 Gippsland Carnival. There is more prizemoney on offer through a new points system and more opportunities for regional communities to get involved and you can read more about the Carnival in this issue. We have also introduced a second weekly race meeting on Fridays at the Healesville Greyhound Racing Club to provide more opportunities for all dogs, including slower and older dogs, to continue their careers on the only straight track in the State. Straight track racing is particularly suitable for veterans racing. Another new GRV initiative, which is this month’s cover story, was the Family Fun Day at the Healesville Club, which brought the local community together to celebrate greyhounds and offered a range of free events, activities and greyhound care services. It was a very well attended day enjoyed by all and GRV is planning another one for early 2017. Finally, I’d like to thank everyone across the sport for a year of great racing and real reform and to wish everyone in the greyhound racing community a happy and safe festive season and a prosperous and productive new year on and off the track. Alan Clayton Chief Executive Officer Greyhound Racing Victoria

Family Fun Day a Great Success by Bridget Scott CROWDS packed into the Healesville greyhound racing club last month for an inaugural GRV event that was so well received that guests were already asking when the next one will be. The first GRV Family Fun Day was a buzz of excitement, with hundreds of people and dogs in attendance, for an event specifically designed to recognise the extraordinary work of the Greyhound Adoption Program’s (GAP) tireless volunteers. Free dog washing, dog walks, food vans and six information sessions were just part of what made up an exciting day of entertainment for guests, as well as their four legged friends who seemed to enjoy the event even more. Long term GAP volunteers Don and Jenny Graham wouldn’t have missed the day, and came along with seven of their greyhounds. “If the public come and adopt one greyhound after being here, that one greyhound will think today is worthwhile, so these are so important,” Mr Graham said. “Every time you do something like this, somewhere, a greyhound’s life is saved.” Victoria’s Deputy Premier James Merlino’s family also came along to be part of the fun, with wife Meagan admitting she will ‘fail as a foster carer.’ “We picked up Sara (who the family adopted) about two months ago, and she just fitted in beautifully, we couldn’t believe how
placid she was with the kids,” Ms Merlino said. “Then, we were driving past Seymour when they had their adoption day, and I said lets pop in see if they have any greyhounds left, and we found Max. We fostered him, and it’s been three weeks and I think we will probably fail that foster because we want to adopt him too.” GRV Chief Executive Officer Alan Clayton said days like this are so important. “It’s a family day, and also an opportunity for people to learn about their dogs,” he said. “The other important thing about it is that so many people have come up to me and said it’s been great to network with other people, and set up contacts with people to be able to talk about their dogs,” he said. “We wanted to celebrate and thank foster carers and people who have adopted greyhounds. The volunteers are the heart and soul of what we do, and we should recognize that and acknowledge that, and we should thank them," said Mr Clayton. Greyhound Racing’s New and Exciting Gippsland Carnival By Andrew Copley Greyhound Racing Victoria is introducing a lucrative new Gippsland Carnival, aimed at celebrating greyhound racing and providing a social and economic boost to the Gippsland region. The four-month long Gippsland Carnival will tie together Victoria’s four country cups in the Gippsland region for the first time, with bonus prize money up for grabs and exciting incentives driving attendance.
Fashion Show with a Difference
Great Racing at the Inaugural Gippsland Carnival By Andrew Copley.
Ladies and gentleman should be prepared to dress to impress as the Colours on Course gets set to rock regional Victoria at the Gippsland Carnival.
Greyhound trainers are encouraged to prepare their sprinters and stayers for the start of greyhound racing’s lucrative new 2016/17 Gippsland Carnival, which will run from 18 December 2016 until 25 March 2017.
As part of the exciting new greyhound racing series planned for Gippsland, there will be plenty of entertainment at the track including the inaugural Colours On Course.
Missing the start of the four-month Carnival, which kicks off at Sale, could hinder your greyhound’s chances of sharing in $35,000 in bonus prize money.
But it won’t be your regular glitz and glam that will catch the eyes of the judges.
For the first time, greyhound racing’s four Country Cups held in Victoria’s Gippsland region – Sale, Warragul, Cranbourne and Traralgon – will be linked.
They will be looking for the most stylish ways both the women and men dress in the colours or patterns of the eight greyhounds. A club voucher is up for grabs for the winners of both the women and men’s divisions at the first three cups. The winners then compete for a prize pack worth $1000 at the Grand Final in Traralgon. Register to model in the Colours on Course at Sale Cup by December 16 to go in the draw to win a prize pack worth $500.
Your Passport to Disneyland
Each of these cups meetings will incorporate heats and finals of both a sprint and distance series (including the cups), with the best performing greyhounds to earn points towards sharing in bonus prize money to the value of $20,000 (sprint) and $15,000 (distance). Greyhounds earn points by achieving top four finishes in heats and finals in any of eight specified events (refer to table below), with the Gippsland Carnival’s champion sprinter and champion stayer to be determined on 2017 Traralgon Cup night, 25 March.
2016/17 Gippsland Carnival Structure
You’ve got a chance to win a family trip to Disneyland by attending the country Cups throughout the Gippsland Carnival. Pre-purchase a Gippsland carnival family passport at the Gippsland carnival website and attend at least two legs of the carnival to go in the draw to win this epic prize. Passports can be collected from the Gippsland carnival passport pavilion at each leg of the carnival, and get them stamped at each Cup that you attend. A family pass can be purchased for each Cup for only $30 (for a family of four), which includes a $30 food and beverage voucher, and 2 premium show bags valued at $20 each.

Participants Reminded of Race Day Animal Welfare Obligations Victorian participants should make themselves aware of updated hot weather and transport policies which outline their animal welfare responsibilities on race days and trial days. GRV General Manager - Animal Welfare Dr Gavin Goble said the updated hot weather and transport policies were developed after a significant period of engagement and input from participants across Victoria and had the support of the Welfare Committee and the Industry Consultative Group. “These policies are part of our sport’s commitment to making animal welfare our number one proiority and all participants need to understand and fully adhere to them,” Dr Goble said. GRV will declare a venue “Hot Weather Affected” if the forecast temperature is 32oC or higher and certain conditions will apply for that meeting and for travel on that day.
Kennel blocks at all Victorian greyhound racetracks are air conditioned and the ambient temperature in the blocks are maintained between 18oC and 24oC.
Major Boost to Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Welfare Inspection Capability
Stewards may abandon or postpone the meeting if the temperature in kennel blocks reaches 26oC and cannot be reduced promptly.
TEN new Welfare Inspectors have joined Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Welfare Inspectorate, boosting the total number of inspectors in the team to 18.
Dr Goble said GRV’s transport policy had also been updated after consultation with stakeholders including owners, trainers as well as GRV’s Welfare Committee and Industry Consultative Group.
The new Welfare Inspectors greatly increase the Inspectorate’s capacity to carry out inspections, to ensure compliance with legislation, the State Government’s statement of expectations and Greyhound Racing Victoria’s rules and regulations, and to advise and educate participants about their animal welfare obligations.
If the forecast temperature is 38oC or above, the meeting will be postponed or cancelled.
“All owners and trainers need to make sure that their greyhounds arrive at meetings in the best possible condition,” Dr Goble said. “To ensure that occurs, GRV has updated its transport policy so on “Hot Weather Affected” days when greyhounds can only be transported in air conditioned trailers and transport vehicles. “In addition, on “Hot Weather Affected” days, rest stops must be made every two hours and dogs must not be left unattended for more than five minutes.” Participants are also reminded that greyhounds should have access to water on all race days regardless of weather or temperature. “If a participant wants to give their dog a drink immediately after retrieval from the race kennel (20 minutes before their race) they can do so under steward supervision,” Dr Goble said. The new policies will officially come into effect on December 12.
GRV General Manager - Animal Welfare Dr Gavin Goble said the new Welfare Inspectors brought with them significant experience and knowledge covering animal welfare, compliance, forensic policing, stakeholder engagement, and other areas. “I’m delighted to welcome the new Inspectors whose skills and experience will complement those of our current staff in the team,” Dr Goble said. “We are now well resourced and are committed to ensuring our industry participants are compliant with legislation and the rules of racing that apply across the industry, as well as providing education and information in regards to best practice. “As we work alongside the many industry participants who do the right thing we hope to continue to build a strong culture where the dogs are always put first,” Dr Goble said. The Inspectors will work closely with Stewards and the Integrity Department and conduct kennel and property inspections across Victoria ensuring that industry participants involved in all stages of the greyhound’s lifecycle are aware of their responsibilities and meet both GRV and other legislative requirements.

“This major investment in the Welfare Inspectorate demonstrates that animal welfare is an overriding priority for GRV and participants in Victoria,” Dr Goble said.

Six & Counting by Molly Haines At the ripe old age of six, Flaming Bob (pictured) is one of Victoria’s oldest greyhounds currently racing. So what’s his secret? Trainer Donald Fields believes it all comes down to attention, rearing and of course a love for racing. “He really likes to race! I think he likes it so much because of the attention he has been given – from the time he was born I spent a lot of time with the litter. The only reason he is racing today is because he wants to run,” Donald explains. Flaming Bob has had a staggering 114 starts for seven wins and 37 placings. Although his last win came in September 2014 at Ballarat he recorded a best-of-the-day time of 25.55sec. Donald Fields, who has over 50 years’ experience in greyhound racing, describes himself as a hobbyist, taking pride in the fact that when he breeds a litter he does everything with them – from whelping to rearing, racing and retirement. But his kennel star Flaming Bob is his only exception. “I bred, reared and trained Flaming Bob’s litter up until I broke my leg and had to spend six months in hospital. The Delbridge’s were good enough to take care of Flaming Bob until I got better,” Donald explained. Donald believes Flaming Bob’s secret to longevity in racing also has to do with his training regime which includes free galloping on a grass slipping track. “I don’t trial him much, like all my dogs they get time on the slipping track so they are run every day. Flaming Bob will only do as much as he wants to – I really let him do his own thing which will generally see him dawdle up the first 300 metres before he really gets going!” “I think the reason he has had so many starts is because he loves to race but also because of how he was reared,” Donald explains. According to Donald to rear a good greyhound a combination of regular worm and flea treatment, sunlight and ‘good tucker’ is a winning combination. “The pups here have a pretty good life! They are kept warm at night and are let out during the day to free run and enjoy sunlight. I also only have two pups in a yard at a time for safety reasons and the rest I believe is really just good luck!” “I have never had a dog that hasn’t made it to the track and I believe it is because of the rearing.” At 83 years of age, Donald credits his health and wellbeing to his greyhounds, a hobby he took up after he was no longer able to play paddock football. “The thing I love most about racing is the animals themselves – they are the best dog’s nature wise! I am 83 and I am still walking the dogs every day - it certainly keeps me fit.” “I am a strong believer that if you look after them they will look after you.” With Flaming Bob showing no signs of slowing down – despite his grey face - Donald believes once Flaming Bob has finished racing it will be time for the two of them to step into retirement together. “The travel to and from the tracks is getting a bit much for me so Flaming Bob may be my last venture.”

Racing, Wagering & Business Development Monthly Report Stuart Laing - General Manager, Racing, Wagering & Business Development Hoop Arm Roll Out We have experienced a slight delay in the implementation of the Hoop Arm Lure across Victoria due to modifications being required to ensure the lure carriage can accommodate the extra stress of the hoop arm. The new carriage is being designed to alleviate the additional force placed on the carriage and rail when the extended hoop arm lure is running at high speed, due to the additional weight. Prototypes have been tested at tracks recently and further alterations are being made. At this stage the testing is satisfactory however more testing is being held to ensure the equipment will stand up under the volume of use required for racing and trials. We anticipate a satisfactory resolution to allow roll-out of the hoop arm for racing to commence at some tracks later in December, with implementation to progress across the state. Catching Pen Gates In addition to the modifications required to the lure carriage, catching pen gates also need to be modified to allow the wider hoop arm to pass through the gate. A prototype gate is under construction in Warnambool, which will also have the benefit of significantly reducing the total weight of the gate by minimizing the volume of steel and replacing steel sheets with padding. This reduction in weight, coupled with the new gate being built to align with the banking of the track and the addition of springs to assist manoeuvrability, will also improve the safety of operating the gate for catching pen staff. Veterans Races Most of the Industry Stakeholder Workshops have indicated that there is a need to focus on providing more opportunities to extend greyhounds’ racing careers by programming more Veterans Races (i.e. 4yo and older). A regular program of Veterans’ races has been initiated throughout the monthly racing calendar with the details as follows: • Shepparton GRC and Healesville GRA will run a Veterans races on alternating weeks. • Ballarat, Geelong, Warragul and Cranbourne will each provide an option for Veterans races at least monthly. Many of these races will be restricted to greyhounds ranked 250+ to help extend the careers of theses greyhounds that may not be as competitive as they were earlier in their careers. Nominations and demand for these events will be monitored 10 over the coming months.

Captain of the Dogs to be the Face of Gippsland Carnival One of the most loved figures in Australian sport will be the face of an exciting new carnival coming to Victorian greyhound racing. Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy, who famously missed the club’s fairytale 2016 premiership triumph, has lent his support to the Gippsland Carnival – a fresh new concept that will combine the Sale, Warragul, Cranbourne and Traralgon Cups under one series. Murphy was one of the heartfelt stories in football in 2016, having missed out on the Bulldogs’ first premiership in 62 years due to a season-ending knee injury. And while Murphy doesn’t have a premiership medal to his name, he is one of the most decorated and universally admired footballers in the AFL with two All-Australian guernseys from his 295 AFL matches. Born and raised in Warragul before embarking on his AFL career, the captain of the Dogs knows the appeal of greyhound racing throughout eastern Victoria. Having grown up just a couple of drop punts from the Warragul greyhound racing club, Murphy is excited about the new concept. “The people of Gippsland love their sport and while there is a passionate greyhound racing following in the area, there is so much more potential for it to grow,” Murphy said. “The Gippsland Carnival is taking greyhound racing to a whole new level as an exciting, family- friendly event with plenty to do for people of all ages and interests.” One of the key activities at the Gippsland Carnival is the Colours on Course competition which will give everyone a chance to win a prize for best dressed, with judges looking for the most stylish use of the colours and patterns of all eight greyhounds by men and women at the Cups. Register your entry into the Sale Cup Colours on Course by December 15 for your chance to go in the draw to win a prize pack worth $500. A club voucher is also up for grabs for the winner of both the women and men’s divisions at the first three cups, with the overall victors vying for a prize pack worth $1000 each at the Grand Final in Traralgon. The carnival’s entertainment doesn’t stop there, with live bands and food trucks for a taste of the flavours of the world. Families can also go in the draw to win a trip to Disneyland, by getting their ‘passport’ stamped at a minimum of two of the four cups.

Talk
with Mark Duclos It’s true…fairytales do come true.
Back in March this year, I received a message via Facebook from a friend who told me to make sure I kept an eye on a pup he owned that had been beaten at the non-TAB venue of Wauchope on the NSW Mid-North Coast but was about to enter the kennels of Brett Bravo and do his future racing in Victoria. I watched (and backed) this young dog win a Maiden at Ballarat and was so impressed with his victory that I made him my ‘On The Punt’ dog to follow on The Catching Pen, thinking no more of it other than that he could develop into a handy dog who could win his share of races. Victories soon followed in lower grade races at Warrnambool, Ballarat, Bendigo and Wentworth Park and he soon made a name for himself as a greyhound who could win ‘more than his share of races’ and was quickly rising through the grades. Ok…I’ll cut to the chase. That greyhound was Ando’s Mac who is now a household name in Australian greyhound racing circles following a thrilling and memorable victory in the G1 TAB Melbourne Cup, annexing a brilliant win in the G1 Vic. Peters Classic at Wentworth Park in October. To see the joy, bliss and tears on the faces of Luke Anderson and his partner Michaele Alderdice following the Melbourne Cup win is just one of the joy’s my job brings me – to witness trainer Jason Mackay, a close friend who I’ve known for more than twenty years and someone I regard as a tough person, speechless and emotional, was a pure ‘Mastercard’ moment…it was something I didn’t think I’d ever see but that moment was priceless. It’s hard to imagine the feeling that winning a Melbourne Cup would bring, but looking at the faces of Jason, Luke and Michaeli following Ando Mac’s victory, I’m sure no one begrudges them what is a life-changing moment. And for those that may be thinking it’s a very long way from getting beaten in a Maiden at Wauchope to winning a Melbourne Cup eleven months later, consider this…the race that Ando’s Mac was beaten in was a heat of the Butch Monkley Memorial Maiden which was won by Weekend Binge, a greyhound who took out the G3 SA Derby and was favourite in his heat of this year’s Melbourne Cup before being beaten by Tripum. While they may have dreamt of winning the Melbourne Cup back in December last year, in reality, their true odds were probably 50,000/1, but as we’ve seen all year, dreams and fairytales do come true. Good luck and Good Punting
A regular look back at the history and heritage of greyhound racing Where did they come from? Given there are 340 or so currently recognised dog breeds, you’d think that one of the world’s heaviest dogs, the St Bernard, and the world’s fastest dog, the greyhound, would not be a particularly close match in terms of how their original bloodlines developed. However, a major study published in Science magazine in May 2004, ‘Genetic Structure of the Purebred Domestic Dog’ suggests otherwise. It looked at common genetic clusters among 414 purebred dogs from 85 domestic dog breeds and from eight grey wolves as the common ancestor of all current dog breeds and came up with some very interesting conclusions. It has long been believed by many that greyhounds are descended from hunting dogs bred by Bedouin tribes in North Africa and the Middle East several thousand years ago that were probably also the ancestors of other modern sighthounds like Salukis and Afghan hounds. The strong visual similarity between these breeds and greyhounds also supports this theory. The Genetic Structure study found though that there was a distinctive genetic cluster from a European and not middle Eastern or Asian background which included several breeds used as herding dogs, like the Belgian and Shetland Sheepdog along with the Borzoi, Irish Wolfhound, St Bernard and Greyhound. The study further suggested that these only really emerged as distinct breeds over the past 400 years or so. While this research is certainly comprehensive, it’s not definitive, but it does strengthen the theory that greyhounds could have originated with ancient Celts from Eastern Europe or Eurasia and not from North Africa and the Middle East. The proven fact that greyhounds have a strong genetic link with St Bernards will certainly generate some discussion and debate although most would agree that the sport of St Bernard racing is unlikely to take off soon.

Ando’s Mac creates upset in TAB Melbourne Cup New South Wales greyhound Ando’s Mac ($12.90) won the world’s richest greyhound race on November 18, the $600,000 Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park. It was the first time since 2000 that a greyhound not trained in Victoria has won the race, with connections collecting a $420,000 first prize. “Just to make this final is something else,” said trainer Jason Mackay, following his TAB Melbourne Cup triumph. “Look at the crowd, the atmosphere is just sensational. I keep pinching myself – I know it happened – but did it really happen? I still can’t believe it.” “I’m lost for words. Sandown is the home of greyhound racing and the dream of winning a race like this is why greyhound trainers get out of bed each morning,” said Mackay. Ando’s Mac slightly strained his deltoid muscle in his heat, however Mackay was confident that a few day’s rest would have him cherry ripe and that proved to be the case, with fellow trainer Anthony Azzopardi housing the greyhound during Melbourne Cup week. “I have to thank (Victorian trainer) Anthony, who has looked after Ando’s Mac for me this week while I went home to NSW.”
Did you know?
by Andrew Copley & Michael Floyd
› Ando’s Mac was Jason Mackay’s first TAB Melbourne Cup finalist. › The $420,000 first prize took Ando’s Mac’s prize money to $556,386, which is 16th on the all-time prize money list. › His sire, El Grand Senor, won the TAB Melbourne Cup in 2010. › He is the first New South Wales trained greyhound since Go Wild Teddy in 2000 to win the TAB Melbourne Cup. › He’s just the fifth greyhound in 61 TAB Melbourne Cup’s to win from box 5, and the first to do so in 15 years. › Favourites have now won just two of the last 13 TAB Melbourne Cups.
“He treated the dog like it was his own.” Azzopardi had the race favourite Zambora Brockie ($2.40), who jumped well before being crowded on the first turn, allowing Ando’s Mac to skip clear and hold on to win over the fast finishing Jesaulenko and SA star Worm Burner in 29.48sec. Earlier in the night, Wayne Vassallo trained his second group 1 Bold Trease winner when It’s A Bird prevailed in the $145,000 12 feature.

First Time Lucky for NSW Owners Imagine going to Sandown Park for the first time and walking away with greyhound racing's biggest prize - which is exactly what happened to NSW couple Michaele Alderdice and Luke Anderson, owners of Ando's Mac (pictured below). It was a twist of fate that led to NSW trainer Jason Mackay being the mastermind behind the drought-breaking win. "We bred Ando's Mac here in NSW and sent him to Victoria to be trained as that's where most of the big prize money is. He was showing promise in Victoria, but when the NSW government decided they were going to close greyhound racing in NSW we were very keen to bring him back here to be trained so we could watch him race in person. It’s much better being at the track than watching your greyhounds race on TV." Michaele said.

Geelong Gold Cup: On Song by Andrew Copley Photos by Bluestream Pictures Shima Song ($5.20) became the first local greyhound to win the Geelong Gold Cup (460m) since her famous sire Dyna Tron won the race in 2011, when scoring a sensational come-from-behind win. Trained by Andrea Dailly, who also trained Dyna Tron, Shima Song scored her first win at group level having made several feature finals, and she had to do it the hard way. After Judicial Man skipped away to a clear six-length lead, Shima Song pulled out all stops to reel him in to score in 25.39sec. Andrea’s husband Tom said after the race that he is hoping the win, which saw Shima Song claim a $47,000 first prize, is a sign of bigger things to come. “Dyna Tron went on to win the Melbourne Cup, and I reckon Shima Song is a sneaky chance to do the same thing,” Tom Dailly said after the race.

“She didn’t begin as well as she can tonight, but she got the room she needed and she is as strong as a bull.”
Shima Song was bred and is owned by the Davrob Syndicate, led by Sandown Greyhound Racing Club Director, David Gleeson. She has now won 17 races from 38 starts and earned $117,000 in prize money. The Geelong Gold Cup was also a great community fundraiser, with $1,000 being won by the Anakie Football and Netball Club, while the Geelong Pool Club won $500.

Animal Welfare Monthly Report Gavin Goble - General Manager, Animal Welfare In November, ten new Welfare Inspectors commenced with GRV, taking the team to 18 plus the Compliance Manager. Currently inspectors are performing a mix of announced and unannounced short visits (mainly checking the dogs’ welfare), inspections (targeting a specific issue) and audits (to ensure compliance with the Code of Practice for the Operation of Greyhound Establishments (the Code). Public consultation on the new draft Code, originally planned for October, has been delayed but we will keep you informed when we know updated timeframes. In the meantime, I would like to clarify the status of the current Code which was previously adopted by the GRV Board as the minimum standard for all greyhound participants. There is concern about how the new Code will differ, particularly in respect to infrastructure (eg kennel sizes) that may require major changes. New participants must be fully Code-compliant now, whilst for existing participants, Welfare Inspectors will take a pragmatic approach to major infrastructure where welfare is not compromised and non-compliance can be managed by an agreed management plan. The latest Adoption Day held at Seymour on 23 October was a huge success with 40 greyhounds being re-homed on the day. We have scheduled one more adoption day before the end of the year on 4 December 2016. To provide further opportunity for participants wanting to get their greyhounds into GAP, we are looking to offer a weekend pre-entry assessment testing day in January, and if successful will aim to provide more opportunities such as this. The new booking system accessed by emailing or phoning Member Services is working well. Currently sessions are booked out only two months ahead, and as we have dates through to the end of February there are no greyhounds on the waiting list. The new system does require every greyhound to have a wind-down period from racing of at least four weeks to increase the likelihood of each greyhound passing the temperament test. For more information see the new ‘Racing to Retirement’ booklet available through Member Services or at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing/. Our new Foster Manager, Emma Cotsell, commenced in October and she will work to develop and manage GAP’s foster care program and increase our capacity to re-home greyhounds, particularly those that require extra support to transition into a pet lifestyle. We have also appointed a new Education Manager who is due to commence in January to develop and deliver education and training programmes with a focus on welfare, as well as leading the team of three Education Officers. Finally, I hope you all had a look at the proposed changes to the racing rules, which aim to enhance welfare outcomes for greyhounds. Should you have any feedback or suggestions regarding welfare initiatives or opportunities please email me direct at ggoble@grv.org.au.
GOTBA News After a very challenging year we conducted our AGM last month, with two new committee members appointed - Lynton Hogan, who has been assisting us with our legal enquires in a consultative way over the past year; and Leeanne Crawford, who has IT skills and has been responsible for the development of our website and online services. Lynton and Leeanne are going to be a great asset to our organization. We are continually seeking out members who have skills that will enhance our organization, so if you think you fit this description and have time to dedicate to the sport please contact us. At the AGM we engaged a panel of veterinary surgeons – Gavin Goble (GM, Animal Welfare at GRV), Steve Karamatic (GRV’s Chief vet), and Chris Boemo - to discuss the issues we are having with positive swabs from food contaminants and supplements regularly used in the preparation of a greyhound for racing. This was very informative and re-enforced the need to feed racing dogs meat that has not come from a knackery, as this has been a common source of positive swabs. Kangaroo meat was suggested as an alternative, with the caution that it should be frozen at least 24 hours before use to eliminate the possibility of transmitting disease to either dogs or humans who handle the product. It was also suggested that all trainers keep up to date with information about recommended withholding periods for supplements and be aware that some products have a cumulative effect over a long period of time. There is information on GRV’S website and on GA’S website, but it’s also good to have a greyhound vet you can rely on for advice. Gavin Goble answered questions in relation to welfare inspections and it was apparent that he is doing all that he can to create a good relationship between participants and welfare officers. He has asked that if anyone has a problem with a visit from welfare representatives to contact him so that he can investigate and resolve the issue. Be aware that visits are recorded and you also have the right to record all conversations with welfare officers, which would help with clarity about any instructions in relation to these visits. Thanks to Chris, Steve and Gavin for their time, who answered many questions from the committee and attendees. I am sure all who attended got a better understanding of the issues discussed. All of the GOTBA committee would like to wish participants a merry Christmas and Happy New year, and moving forward into 2017 we will continue to do all that we can to nurture greyhound racing and assist our members. Your membership is essential to the future success of our sport, so please take the time to join up and communicate with us so we can better represent you. 15

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Integrity Monthly Report Shane Gillard - General Manager, Integrity With the big events for the year out of the way, our focus within the Integrity Department now shifts to 2017, specifically moving to become a consistent, transparent, and fair regulatory body. There is much work going on behind the scenes to develop our new regulatory strategy and compliance framework, which will most likely result in the expansion of scope for our authorised officers within GRV. The model that I’m keen to introduce to GRV is one of constructive compliance which fundamentally provides encouragement at one end of the scale and deterrence at the other. What constructive compliance means is that GRV as a regulator will be providing the industry with information and guidance to enable participants to understand the rules in a practical sense, to help participants be confident to implement the changes required to ensure compliance with the rules. The teams within the Integrity Department are going through significant change at the moment and I expect this to continue into early 2017. We are restructuring our Steward’s unit and
GRV Staff Profile This month we begin a new series profiling GRV staff. First cab off the rank is Heidi Lester, recently appointed as GRV’s Chief Steward Name: Heidi Lester Department: Integrity Job title: Chief Steward What do you do at GRV? As Chief Steward, I oversee a panel of Stipendiary Stewards and associated integrity staff including the Chief Veterinarian, Betting Analysts and Raceday Data Operators as well as administrative staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our operation running. I also work closely with legal counsel and the Investigations and Animal Welfare teams, particularly in regard to serious offences such as positive drug cases and animal welfare matters. Broadly, the role of the Stewards is to control and regulate the greyhound racing industry through the proper conduct of all race meetings throughout Victoria. It is a Stewards role to ensure that the Rules of Racing are adhered to, and investigate, determine and where necessary, penalise any breaches of the Rules. It is the duty of a Steward to ensure there is a level playing field for all participants. What attracted you to the role? A: I was drawn to the role because of the direction that Greyhound Racing Victoria is now heading and; due to the determination and commitment that the people leading the organisation have displayed. By that I mean, that after the revelations of the past year
implementing a tiered organisational model to provide clarity in terms of roles and responsibilities. This is expected to include the provision of information and training to Stewards which will translate into enhanced levels of consistency across the group. The new model will also promote leadership and professionalism, something I’m certain you will notice once implemented. In closing out 2016, I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to our Integrity information hotline. The information received is invaluable for us to ensure that there is a level playing field for the entire industry. For those not sure about where to send information that relates to suspicious activity, the investigations unit now has a 24hr/7 day a week toll free hotline - 1300 856 109 - to report unethical behaviour. Rest assured that every report is treated with the highest level of confidentiality and only our investigations team have access to the information. Merry Christmas to all, please be sure to enjoy the festive season and stay safe! or so, this current administration has mandated a reform agenda that will deliver the highest level of integrity seen in any racing code in Australia. That is powerful stuff and something I feel privileged to be part of. What skills/education/experience do you bring to GRV? I have been involved in the racing industry all my life, albeit with the thoroughbreds. After fifteen years with Racing Victoria including nine years as a member of the Stewards Panel, I relocated to Macau as Chief Steward of the Macau Jockey Club. During my tenure with the MJC, I introduced many reforms including a significant number of animal welfare measures for racing and retired animals. In order to develop the professionalism of frontline staff I commenced a staff training program identifying high potential individuals who were given the opportunity to spend time in an international racing jurisdiction, as well as developing a formal Stewards Exchange Program with international racing bodies. Two of the most satisfying achievements were, firstly, developing a swabbing strategy that immediately led to the detection of a notorious cheating drug in a swab sample and the lengthy disqualification of the person involved and secondly, leading a successful investigation into the deliberate doping of a horse which ultimately resulted in the person responsible being arrested and charged by the Judicial Authorities. There is no place in any sport for people who think the Rules don’t apply to them. I hope that the skills and experience I bring across to the GRV Integrity Team go a long way to enabling us to reach our goal of delivering the highest level of integrity of any racing code in Australia. GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
AROUND THE CLUBS
The Greys of Gippsland: Sale Greyhound Racing Club Profile Greyhounds have been racing in Gippsland for over 80 years and the Sale and District Greyhound Racing Club is where it’s all been happening. Founded as the Sale Speed Coursing Club by a group of local businessmen and greyhound enthusiasts in 1935, the Club is now one of Australia’s biggest regional greyhound racing hubs and very much part of the Gippsland community. The Sale Speed Coursing Club held its first meeting on January 8, 1936 with races over 250-yard straight and 340-yard semicircular courses. In the late 1940s, it changed its name to the Gippsland Speed Coursing Club and moved to the eastern side of the Princes Highway. Then in 1963, a new track was built at the Sale Showgrounds with mainly volunteer labour and equipment donated from other clubs, including a judges’ box from the old North Melbourne track which still stands today. In 1982, the Club moved to its current site at the Showgrounds and introduced gaming machines in 1993 which have helped fund the growth of one of regional Australia’s most well-appointed greyhound racing clubs. The Club’s facilities include the Time Out
The Lure of Sale for Tom Jolly by Bridget Scott AT only 19 years of age, Sale boy Tom Jolly (pictured above right) has achieved more than what many double his age could only dream of. In July this year, the teen travelled to Port Elizabeth in South Africa for the International Polo-cross Championships, where his team won the series. In his spare time, Tom also works at the Sale Greyhound Racing Club. General track maintenance and driving the lure make up just a few of the tasks that Tom has taken on since he’s worked at the track for the last three and a half years. However, Tom’s involvement with Sale goes beyond a means of having some money in his back pocket, but it’s also a social experience and something he does for enjoyment, and not obligation. One of the main highlights he took out of his experience in South Africa was the friendships he formed, and his job at Sale is no different.

Café, the Allure at Trackside Bistro and the 150 seat Winning Post Function Room and it directly employs 60 full and part time staff. Beyond the Club, greyhound racing also generates many more indirect local jobs and contributes around $20 million to the Gippsland region. The Club also has a Community Support Fund, works with around 100 local groups and provides its facilities free of charge to local non-profit organisations such as the Wellington Relay for Life Committee and the Sale Football Club. The Club’s current Committee includes President John Waugh, Senior Vice President Les Hughes, Junior Vice President Ron Healey and members Dawn Johnston, John Elston, Danny Waugh, Heather Harper, Julian Sellings and Moyle Shimmin and it’s managed by Des Dooley, who brings decades of experience as an owner, trainer, breeder, administrator and bookmaker in both the greyhounds and gallops codes. Greyhound racing is still very much at the heart of Sale Club which holds about 60 meetings a year over distances of 440m, 520m and 650m with around 100 greyhounds and 500 patrons at each meeting. The highlight of its racing calendar though is the $75,000 Sale Cup, the only Group 1 race held in regional Victoria, run over 650m, with crowds of over 2200 every Boxing Day and now one of the star events in the new Gippsland Carnival, a feast of regional greyhound racing and community events which kicks off this month. Tom returned from South Africa in July, and his polo-cross is a passion which he said was passed on by his father who also played the sport. Tom was selected to compete and represent his country after being deemed one of the best polo-cross players in Australia. “I played for Victoria in the Nationals where we played every other state, and I was picked to represent our country,” Tom said. He described it as a ‘highly skilled sport’, one which he took on at around the age of 12 and has loved ever since. “I have loved making friends, and winning as well,” he said. Tom Jolly makes up several people profiled by Greyhound Racing Victoria staff as part of the Clubs in their Community project, where a variety of people and their stories were unmasked. As a continuation from this, GRV will begin a Greyhounds are My Life video series which aims to tell some of these stories in more depth, and give an insight into the lives of Victorians who rely on, and love the greyhound racing industry. Sale will be the first club to have some of their participants profiled as their cup quickly approaches. Keep your eyes peeled for the first video set to appear in December.

Pre-entry Assessment Booking Number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au
Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well: • Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au • All sessions for December 2016 - February 2017 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. • To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: - have a current C5 vaccination; and - not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.
• Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session.
