CEO’s Update A new year begins and whilst GRV has completed much of the development work and significant progress has been made in implementing aspects of the major reform work, there remains much to do in 2017. There are some very significant and large scale tasks ahead that GRV aims to complete this year to help secure the sport’s long term future. Among them is to conclude our response to the reviews undertaken by Sal Perna, the Racing Integrity Commissioner and Dr Charles Milne, Victoria’s Chief Veterinarian. One of the most significant recommendations is to implement a new Code of Practice for greyhound facilities which is being developed by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. New Planning Guidelines are also being developed along with a new regulatory framework for the code which will cover rearing, whelping, breaking and pre-training. GRV is also planning to have new Animal Welfare and Breeding Strategies completed and operational before the end of the financial year. Work is well underway on bringing the existing track at Horsham Greyhound Racing Club to an acceptable standard to enable racing to resume around April 2017. Scoping and feasibility studies are also about to commence in relation to the building of a new straight track in Horsham and priority is being accorded to the development of significant new training centres at Bendigo, Sandown, The Meadows, Ballarat and Sale clubs. GRV is also continuing to build its own capabilities and has engaged PwC to review the quality of our animal welfare data. The draft review has already identified several key areas where improvements are needed and we are working on this now. We have also been focused on substantively strengthening GRV’s integrity capabilities over the last 17 months. Now the Integrity Department is increasingly recognised both inside and outside the industry as ready and able to act promptly and effectively on reports of suspicious behaviour and other intelligence it gathers and receives. The Hot Weather Policy introduced on Boxing Day 2015 is now in its second year and its implementation has been steadily refined with 20 race meetings rescheduled or transferred to other venues by the end of January. To further ensure the welfare of the dogs over hot summers, GRV’s transportation policy now requires that the internal temperature of any vehicle carrying greyhounds must be maintained at 32°C or lower and checked by thermometers installed on the vehicle. Transitional arrangements to help participants meet these requirements by 12 March this year will also be backed by onthe-ground support at the clubs. In other news, a new GRV project that profiles the people of the sport, Greyhounds are My Life, is now being rolled out and you can read more about it in this issue. Looking ahead, the third leg of the Gippsland Carnival, the Cranbourne Cup, takes place this month, building on the Sale and Warragul Cups to present a great program of regional greyhound racing at its best. Once again, the day will feature live entertainment and a range of activities for all the family off the track and I hope to see you there, enjoying the summer at one of Victoria’s best racecourses.

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH Feature Article By Molly Haines To say Jack Buckley was born into greyhound racing is an understatement – being the son of well-respected and successful Irish greyhound trainer Pat Buckley, Jack’s history with the dogs is as rich as they come. At just 23-years-of-age Jack made the move to Australia in September 2016 to chase Australian success in greyhound racing. “My dad has been a leading trainer in Ireland for more than 10 years, he also breeds one or two litters a year,” Jack said. Before moving to Australia Jack and his older sister Sarah worked in their father’s kennels every day with their team of 20 -25 dogs. Even during the school their school years mornings and afternoons would be spent walking, feed, cleaning, and grooming.

“My grandfather has also bred a couple of Derby finalists and Oaks winners,” Jack said. Making the journey around the globe, Jack landed on his feet with Andrea, Tom and George Dailly, who are guiding Jack through the transition into racing in Victoria. “I feel very lucky to have landed with the Dailly’s. I honestly couldn't ask for nicer people to be involved with. I feel a great deal of debt for the opportunity they have given me and hopefully one day I can repay the kindness that they have shown me. It's like a home away from home.” Jack currently works at the Dailly’s farm where they rear pups as well as the kennel property with the race dogs, mostly under the watchful eye of boss and housemate George Dailly. “The people here are amazing. Every day is great fun, I really enjoy the people I work with and I am really looking forward to the future.” Jack’s focus is long term in Victoria, with the end goal to be competitive here. Hopefully success will come with two Irish dogs Jack has in quarantine. “The pups are from the best breeding in Ireland you can get, their mother has thrown group one winners and a couple of her progeny have gone to stud. They are around 15 months old and are due out of quarantine in April.”

“It was a real family effort and we worked hard and the results always followed,” Jack said.

“I will train them and the plan being to also train some Australian dogs and hopefully build a team to be competitive and try to challenge for group races.”

Jack didn’t just leave behind his family, friends and greyhounds but also a state-of-the-art greyhound facility with heated floors and kennels, an indoor circular walking machine and indoor/outdoor paddocks plus a lure system on their grass straight track.

Having just been granted his Victorian trainers registration, Jack has set his kennels up in Elaine and is looking for the opportunity to train his first Australian dog while his pups are in quarantine.

“I miss my family a lot because we are all quite close – it’s a family run affair. I miss being a part of training the dogs especially because we have such a nice team of dogs in training at the moment.” “I wanted to come to Victoria because it is the central hub of greyhound racing in Australia. All the best dogs race here and the competition is very strong.” Australia can also thank the Buckley family for the sire College Causeway – a greyhound that Pat Buckley trained to 31 victories from 48 starts, including numerous track records and an Irish Derby win in 2009. “College Causeway had an engine like no other and I don’t think there was a dog on this planet that could beat him fair and square. He came from 12 lengths down to win the Irish Derby Final,” Jack said. Gippsland super sprinter Jesaulenko is one of Australia’s highest regarded College Causeway offspring. “It was a thrill to be involved so closely with College Causeway when he was in training. He was a magnificent dog with a beautiful temperament,” Jack said. “College Causeway thrilled crowds in Ireland and wherever he raced he would always gather a huge following.” Jack said. “My grandfather also had dogs – but he mainly bred his own dogs to train.” Jack’s grandfather, Mike Buckley, was a successful greyhound trainer in his own right winning the Irish Oaks with a dog called Velvet All Jam, which is the biggest race for female greyhounds in Ireland.

“I will miss having the family involved when I start training over here because there is only so much FaceTime you can do, but I am excited. I have always wanted to train dogs and the opportunities are far greater in Australia than they are at home. It’s a good challenge.” A large reason behind Jack’s move to Victoria is the prize money, which he describes as being ‘second to none’. “To put the prize money into perspective my dad has a team of 20 dogs – he won seven group ones in 2016 and only took home a quarter of a million in prize money. If you won seven group ones in Victoria, you will be taking around a million dollars.” “I grew up with my father being very successful. Experiencing the thrill and excitement of it all makes you want to do the same thing. You get such a buzz out of it especially when you know that you played a part in the success.” In November Jack experienced Victorian greyhound racing at its finest, attending the Group One Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park which proved to be a night he won’t forget in a rush. “There is nothing like the show Sandown put on Melbourne Cup night – the fireworks and entertainment was like nothing I had seen before at a greyhound venue.” “I would recommend anyone from back home to come over and see how it is done and take notes.” Now settled into the Dailly’s farm in Elaine, Jack’s main aim is to train his first Australian winner to help assemble a competitive team of greyhounds. But like greyhound trainers across Australia, Jack has the Group One Melbourne Cup in his sights – hoping one day he has a dog good enough for Victoria’s richest greyhound race.

SALE CUP Dundee’s Triple Treat By Andrew Copley

Dundee Osprey (Geoff Scott-Smith) became the only greyhound currently racing with three Group 1 wins to his name when he took out the Group 1 Sale Cup (650m) on the opening night of greyhound racing’s brand new $800,000 Gippsland Carnival. Having won two Group 1s as a sprinter, including the prestigious Topgun at The Meadows, Dundee Osprey showed his class and versatility over the longer distance with an easy win by four lengths over Chrichton Bale (Darren Fisher) and Aston Harvey (Eddie Lieshout).

“He has really exceeded my expectations,” Scott-Smith said after the win. “It’s always nerve-wracking being in big races like this, but it’s also very rewarding.” The Pakenham South trainer will now decide whether to continue racing Dundee Osprey over longer distances or drop him back to the sprint. “I’m in no real hurry to make a decision, but I’ll see how he pulls up after tonight. Sometimes he can pull up a bit flat because he tries so hard, so we’ll just wait and see.” Dundee Osprey was the leader of the Gippsland Distance Champion following the conclusion of the first leg of the Gippsland Carnival, which incorporates supporting distance races on the nights of the Warragul Cup (January 28), Cranbourne Cup (February 11) and the Traralgon Cup (March 25).

“The Gippsland Carnival is fantastic. It’s very innovative and it feels like it is getting the local community involved in greyhound racing,” Scott-Smith said. Earlier in the night Aston Bolero (Jason Thompson) won the Gippsland Sprint Launch, which was the first leg of the Gippsland Carnival sprint series. “He’s a tough dog and he loves this track,” Thompson said after the race. “Going into the race I thought it was so even, and I thought it would be a matter of which dog got the start right. Luckily for me it was Aston Bolero.” “I’ll continue to enter him for the next three sprint legs of the Gippsland Carnival.”

First Aid for Greyhounds: Emergency Bandaging By Andrew Copley Following the first video on first aid kits, Greyhound Racing Victoria’s second first aid video featuring experienced greyhound vet Dr. Chris Boemo focuses on bandaging. While there is an On-Track Vet (OTV) at every Victorian greyhound race meeting, injuries can occur when there isn’t a vet on hand – such as at home or at a trial track – and this is where having a suitably stocked first aid kit on hand for procedures such as bandaging and splinting is imperative. Equally as important is knowing how to use the materials in your first aid kit, and in this video Dr Boemo demonstrates how to bandage a greyhound, which can be extremely beneficial prior to seeking diagnosis from a vet. “Depending on the severity (of an injury), it might be preferable to treat your dog there and then to avoid too much blood loss,” Dr Boemo says. “If it’s a small spike wound or a graze it might not be a major issue. But if there’s an arterial bleed or a bleed from a major vein where there’s a large amount of blood loss through a laceration, or if there’s a large amount of swelling developing very quickly indicating bleeding under the skin, it’s best to treat that injury fairly quickly.” Dr. Boemo demonstrates how tight to apply bandages and explains the benefits of icing certain injuries. “Icing is beneficial for tears to muscles such as the monkey muscle, triangle muscle or back muscle. It’s best to rest the injured area to prevent blood flow to that area, and icing will assist with that,” he said. Practising bandaging on a healthy greyhound will help prepare you for certain emergency situations, and taking an injured greyhound to see a vet as soon as possible, to ensure your dog makes a full and speedy recovery.

A Family Affair By Bridget Scott & Molly Haines. Junction Village trainer Jess Hopkins happily puts her hand up to say that she was guilty of being an annoying grandchild. “I am the third generation of greyhound trainers in my family so I grew up with greyhounds around all the time. Mum and I lived 200 metres from Nan and Pa which meant I would visit the dogs every day on the way to and from school,” Jess said. “I am sure Pa would have loved my daily visits but I have no doubt they annoyed him too because I used to follow him around.” When Jess was 12-years-old, she moved with her family onto a farm in Devon Meadows to rear greyhounds. “We had about 80 pups on the property but only had a couple of race dogs at that stage.” Although she grew up with many greyhounds Jess has very fond memories of an old dog by the name of Wylie Boy, a winner of 34 races from 59 starts between 1995 and 1997 – an outright champion to Jess’s family. “I grew up with him wandering around as a pet. He was a bit different to other dogs, you just wish every dog was like him.” “I used to spend so much time just sitting in his kennel with him, but he never loved me like he did Nan and Pa. He would fret without them.” At just 26 Jess Hopkins is successfully training her own greyhounds, with the help of her mum and nan. “Greyhound racing is a great sport to be involved in, I think mainly because it can be such a family venture. I am currently looking for somewhere bigger, like a farm, to train my greyhounds on,” she said. A highlight in Jess’s greyhound training career was when she trained Panic Station to victory in one of the races on greyhound racing’s night of nights – the Melbourne Cup. The 2015 Melbourne Cup was a memorable one, with outstanding greyhounds Dyna Double One and Fernando Bale going head-to-head for the $420,000 first prize.

Strategic Communication & Marketing Monthly Report By Louise Martin - General Manager As we all know, greyhound racing never stops. Meetings are held all year round and there are no obvious quiet times of the year. One of the aims of the newly-formed Gippsland Carnival is to promote the summer period as greyhound racing season, making it more prominent than any other time of year. There is so much packed into the Australian sporting calendar and it can be a competitive environment but we are aiming to generate momentum from this new carnival that will boost greyhound racing right around Victoria. The Sale Cup is a traditionally well-attended event and this was the case once again on Boxing Day, despite the weather gods not quite holding up their end of the bargain. There are four legs of the carnival and it is a key focus of the Strategic Communications and Marketing team as well as our clubs to deliver strong outcomes from the Sale, Warragul, Cranbourne and Traralgon Cups. Of course, the Gippsland Carnival is not the only project that has been a focus.

A new video series titled Greyhounds Are My Life has been launched with the aim of profiling some of the 17,000 people involved in our sport in Victoria. This is part of not just greyhound racing engaging with the community but showcasing the communities that are spread right throughout Victoria. Animal Welfare Monthly Report By Gavin Goble - General Manager GRV is committed to ensuring the best welfare conditions for greyhounds at Victorian race tracks. Heat stress in greyhounds is of serious concern, particularly where greyhounds race on hot days. In the summer months, it is important that all participants remind themselves of the requirements of the updated GRV Hot Weather Policy and Transportation of Greyhounds Policy, which can be found on the GRV website at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ policies-and-guidance. On hot weather affected days (where the temperature at the track is forecast to be 32°C or higher), clubs will open kennels 30 minutes earlier than the standard opening time for twilight and night race meetings. To supplement the Hot Weather Policy, GRV is providing greyhound cooling vests to all clubs for optional use by participants, particularly on hot weather affected days. These will be available in the catching pens, to cool dogs down immediately after a race, and while they walk back to the kennel block. Reducing the instances of euthanasia of greyhounds at the race track because of serious injury remains a top priority for GRV. As announced last month, GRV is trialling a Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI) which will fund the cost of veterinary treatment for greyhounds with certain serious injuries that would otherwise

be euthanased at the race track due to the financial constraints of the owner. This is a pilot, it only applies to certain injuries and only when these injuries are sustained during a race meeting, and is subject to an assessment and referral by the On-Track Veterinarian. This assessment includes the type of injury and whether treatment is in the best welfare interests of the greyhound. It is not intended to fund treatment for all serious injuries, or for injuries sustained off the track. Once the trial ends, GRV will review the results and further information for participants will follow. The 2016 calendar year was a record year for the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) with more than 1000 individual greyhounds adopted. 2017 has got off to a great start with another very successful Adoption Day, with many greyhounds being adopted, which you can read more about on page 19. Participants are reminded that the GAP pre-entry assessment booking system does require every greyhound to have a winddown period. This wind-down period increases the likelihood that the greyhound's will successfully meet the requirements of the temperament test. Integrity Department Monthly Report By Shane Gillard - General Manager The use and prevalence of prohibited substances is high on our agenda and we are continually evolving our strategies when it comes to catching those who don’t adhere to the rules. The highly publicised events of December show how when we all work together to drive reform we can build a fair, trusted and respected industry for the future. As you would expect I can’t discuss the detail of what occurred, but I think it is important to acknowledge that we have come a long way over the past twelve months, and we continue to work on the best possible integrity standards for our sport. All Greyhound racing jurisdictions in Australia are currently working together with the various racing laboratories to stamp out the use of prohibited substances in the sport of greyhound racing. This includes the development of aligned strategies and the sharing of information and resources across the country. I’ve been contacted by many owners and trainers over the past four weeks, to broadly discuss the integrity of the industry and the things we need to do to ensure a level playing field for all. Central to many of the discussions has been the ability of GRV’s Integrity Department to get real time information from you about what you are seeing around the traps. It really doesn’t matter how small or insignificant you might think the information is, it could turn out to be the last piece of the puzzle we need to put a case together – so again I encourage you to pick up the phone and let us know what you’re seeing. Forty one participants were disqualified by the RADB during 2016, with a significant proportion of those occurring in the latter months. This is a disappointing result because it means that people are risking their involvement in the sport by taking short cuts or looking for an edge by breaking the rules. The impact of disqualification has far reaching implications not only for those disqualified but also for those around them. If you are not sure about the relevant rules, please take a moment to look at GAR 83 for Prohibited Substances and GAR 99 for the Consequences of Disqualification (see article page 10).

Racing, Wagering & Business Development Monthly Report By Stuart Laing - General Manager Racing Infrastructure Upgrades Throughout 2016 a series of racing infrastructure projects aimed at improving the quality and safety of GRV Racetracks have been in development. In the first half of 2017, most of this infrastructure will be rolled out to GRV Clubs. The key initiatives in the infrastructure upgrade program include: New Starting Boxes Nine new sets of Steriline starting boxes are currently under construction to replace the older starting boxes around the state. These new boxes will be installed at the most used starts at nine tracks, rotating the replaced boxes in the main to the distance starts. The upgrade will mean that all 43 sets of starting boxes throughout Victoria will now be all standardised in their dimensions and operations. Hoop Arm & New Catching Pen Gates The hoop arm will be re-introduced for racing at The Meadows Wednesday (MEP) meetings in late February 2017, with Warrnambool and Traralgon the first of the provincial clubs to follow soon thereafter. Sandown will be next following the installation of an upgraded catching pen gate to allow the hoop arm to operate for both Sunday afternoon and Thursday night meetings. Once Sandown is ready to go, Saturday night meetings at The Meadows will also switch to the hoop arm into the catching pen. Construction and installation of new lighter catching pen gates is commencing across the state, which will allow the hoop arm to pass through the pen. These will be progressively installed at all other tracks as quickly as possible and racing will be moved progressively to the hoop arm for all meetings across Victoria over the coming months.

Braking Lure Motor By the end of February 2017 all GRV race tracks will have had their lure motors changed over to a new Braking Motor. The installation of the braking motor will mean that the Lure Driver can slow and ultimately stop the lure in the event of a potential incident on the track. The braking motor is a safety mechanism available to lure drivers combined with a new set of operation instructions and procedures currently being developed around when and where the drivers can exercise the use of the brake. A side benefit of the braking motor is that the lure can be slowed and pulled up much more quickly after a race, reducing the amount of audible noise greyhounds can hear at the completion of the race, meaning they are potentially less excited in the catching pen. Horsham Track Upgrade The Horsham track was closed in late October 2016 to undertake a major upgrade. The upgraded track has been designed with greyhound safety as the main driver. The revamped track will include new racing infrastructure throughout and will feature drop on boxes for the 410m start and track widening around the entire circumference. It is envisaged that the track will be completed and trialling will commence in early April. Grading Review A terrific response has been received from all sectors of the industry to the on-line survey conducted last month seeking views on the current grading system and racing program. The responses are currently being assessed and compiled and will be taken into consideration during the Grading Review process. We will report back to the industry over the coming months via the GRV website, as well as by visiting tracks to engage directly with trainers and participants on proposed changes. 9

RADB HEARINGS CONCLUDED John Telling - RADB Hearing held 11 January 2017 - Failed to present the greyhound ‘Tinderella’ free of any prohibited substance (6a-hydroxystanozolol) for an event at the Traralgon meeting held on Saturday 30 April 2016 and an event at the Sale meeting held on Sunday 12 June 2016. The RADB determined the penalty in respect to the 30 April 2016 event should be 3 months disqualification. For the 12 June 2016 offence, Mr Telling is disqualified for a period of 6 months with 3 months of that time being suspended. The penalty in respect of the 30 April 2016 event is to be served concurrently with the penalty for the 12 June event. In addition, the greyhounds are disqualified from the events. Steven Trotman - RADB Hearing held 9 January 2017 - Failed to present the greyhound ‘Riverside Mons’ free of any prohibited substance (Amphetamine) for an event at the Sale meeting held on Sunday 22 May 2016. The RADB determined the appropriate penalty to be 18 months disqualification with 6 months of that period being suspended. In addition, the greyhound is disqualified from the race. Bradley Mitchem – RADB Hearing held 21 December - Mr Mitchem pleaded not guilty but was found guilty in respect to 3 charges. The RADB determined the appropriate penalty to be a fine of $1,500 with $750 of that amount suspended. In addition, the greyhound is disqualified from the race. Samuel Riseley – RADB Hearing held 14 December 2016 Engaged in the use of contemptuous, improper, offensive language by sending messages to Mr. Carl Scott, Steward of Greyhound Racing Victoria, to his messenger on his personal Facebook page on 19 and 20 May 2016 and on 6 and 7 June 2016. The RADB determined the appropriate penalty is a fine of $2,000 and a twoyear disqualification. The Board also proposes to refer the matter to the Racing Integrity Commissioner. What Happens if I am Disqualified? This question is often asked after someone has received a penalty resulting in disqualification. The ramifications of being disqualified are far-reaching with impacts on both the person disqualified and those they reside or associate with. The process that results in disqualification generally involves a formal procedure with a hearing before the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board (RADB). However it is important to note that the GRV Board also has the power to disqualify people without the need for a RADB Hheraing. After the RADB hand down their penalty, those subject to the disqualification receive a letter from the GRV Integrity Department outlining the outcome of the hearing with advice about the effects of being disqualified. These can include: • Living arrangements – a registered person cannot remain registered if they are living with a disqualified person, unless otherwise approved by the GRV Board. • Training facility – registered persons are not to train, keep or race any greyhounds at any property deemed by the Board as being or having been the training property of a person that has had their registration cancelled through disqualification or other means. • Transfer of Greyhounds – disqualified people cannot transfer greyhound ownership to anyone residing with them or any relative, including a spouse or domestic partner, whether or not they reside with the disqualified person. • Access to a racecourse - disqualified persons are not permitted to enter any part of a racecourse, including lands within the property used in connection with greyhound racing during any event. Events include race meetings, all trials and training activity. • Greyhound training facilities – disqualified persons are not permitted to enter, go onto or remain on any place where greyhounds are trained, kept or raced, unless otherwise approved to do so by the GRV Board. • Breeding – disqualified persons must obtain permission from the GRV Board before engaging in any greyhound breeding activities, which includes the transfer of breeding units of semen. There are also limitations on who you can transfer units to, even with GRV Board approval. • Nominations – disqualified persons are unable to nominate a Greyhound or compete in any event. • Disqualified persons cannot act as an attendant or official at a meeting; train a greyhound; be employed by any person involved in the training of greyhounds; and cannot be a member of a committee of a club involved in greyhound racing. This is not an exhaustive list and there are many other activities that are impacted by disqualification. Rather it is an overview of some of the more common impacts of being disqualified. Please be aware, some brands of rugs do not do the job as well as the specialised ones that are made from patented material. So ask experienced users to make sure you get the most effective one.

For trainers who have recently been disqualified from racing, you need to be aware that when you re-apply you will be treated as a new applicant, so from the day of the commencement of your disqualification it would be in your best interests to know what is involved in a kennel audit, especially the permit requirements, and work to get everything in order while you are disqualified. If all these standards are met when you re-apply it will help to shorten the time it takes for your new application to be processed. Once your disqualification is up contact the integrity department and they will give you advice about how to apply to become a registered participant. There will be a point of contact within GRV so you can check how your application is progressing.

It has been reported to our association that many greyhound properties have been illegally trespassed on and video equipment has been placed in kennels of trainers. GOTBA has reported this to the police on behalf of the people involved and we will continue to follow up on this matter. Be aware there is ongoing pressure and scrutiny of the sport in the hope of discrediting participants, so if you are approached for employment, please make sure you do your due diligence to establish bona fides. Along with GRV, GOTBA has secured the use of cooling rugs at the catching pen on hot days, so please ensure that you use them so that your dog has the best possible chance of reducing

Greyhounds are My Life An art collection created by race winnings, childhood dreams of being a vet becoming a reality, greyhounds who breakfast on vegemite and toast and romance at the track are just some of the stories in GRV’s new video series Greyhounds are My Life. The series profiles some of the 17,000 people involved in greyhound racing across Victoria. They come from all walks of life but are united by their common love of greyhounds and by how they put the welfare of the dogs and the integrity of the sport first and foremost. Their stories also highlight how the sport and Victoria’s 13 greyhound racing clubs are part of their local communities, generating jobs, fostering social and professional relationships and supporting local causes and activities. Each video features a participant with strong links to their local greyhound racing club and two videos are being posted in the week before their club’s annual Cup with further videos to follow for each club down the track.

Lightning Frank crossing the line in the Silver Chief

SILVER CHIEF The Wright Stuff By Andrew Copley. 2016 was greyhound racing’s year of the hobby trainer, and 2017 kicked off in much the same fashion with Lightning Frank ($3.60) landing Mathew Wright his first Group 1 winner in the Silver Chief (525m) at The Meadows on Sunday 8 January. Wright is a fencing contractor who trains a small team of six greyhounds at Allansford, just five minutes from Warrnambool. He watched on in disbelief as Lightning Frank stormed home to snare the $100,000 first prize, much to the delight of the owners, the Hashtag Syndicate, who celebrated long into the night. Mathew and father Kevin became involved in greyhound racing 25 years ago when Mathew was just 14 years of age, with Lightning Frank lifting the pair to new heights. “He’s the best greyhound we’ve ever had,” Wright said after Lightning Frank came from behind to win in 29.97sec. “We had a greyhound called Off Tap (won 43 from 75), who was an absolute flying machine, but she was a short courser.” Despite Lightning Frank posting a brilliant 29.66sec (best) in his semi-final win – his 12th victory from 21 starts – Wright entered the $145,000 Silver Chief final with little confidence. “Being drawn in box five I wasn’t very confident because the six dog (Lorenzo Blue) tries to cut in (to the rail). I really expected ($2.50 Fav) Thirty Talks to win from box one, and had he not got injured he would’ve won,” Wright said. Thirty Talks, the highly decorated Queenslander and $2.40 favourite, entered the Silver Chief with a prize money bank balance of almost $300,000, more than all seven other Silver Chief finalists combined. However, he led before dropping a back muscle in the run, opening the door for Lightning Frank to swoop. “The Hashtag Syndicate is made up of three lads and their dads, and they all just love going to the races to watch their dogs race. Lightning Frank is about the fourth or fifth greyhound

they’ve owned after buying him as a young pup, and I’m really happy for them.” Wright knew Lightning Frank was something special when he was 16 months of age, although he did take some convincing. “We put him out of the puppy boxes at Warrnambool at 16 months of age and he ran so fast that we just assumed the clock was wrong because race dogs don’t even run that time. We didn’t think any more of it until we put him around again two weeks later and he ran just as fast.” “When he did that I thought his potential was pretty scary, but I wasn’t getting carried away because for all we knew he might not be able to run more than 400 metres, let alone handle two turns.” Lightning Frank has turned out to be everything Wright had hoped for, and he is hopeful his star will gain a run in this month’s invitation-only Group 1 Temlee (525m) at The Meadows. In the meantime, however, he has a $100,000 first prize to think about. “Half the prize money goes to the owners, while part of my share will go towards buying dad a new ride-on mower, because I accidentally ran his one into a tree a few weeks ago,” he said. Wright said he was delighted to be able to continue the flourish of Group 1 wins by hobby trainers over the past 12 months in Victoria. “It’s been a great year or so for hobby trainers like myself. Twelve months ago Andy Stewart won the Silver Chief (with Midwinter), while Dustin Drew, who like me is from down Warrnambool way, won the Maturity with Kilty Express, and Dundee Osprey has won three Group 1s,” he said. Gerry O’Keeffe and Matthew Lanigan are other Victorian trainers to have won their first races at Group 1 level in the past 12 months, providing plenty of hope to others. “There’s thousands of trainers like me,” Wright said. “We’re just battlers waiting for that one really good dog to come along and it’s such a good feeling when it happens.”

“…a cheeky little thing, and the runt of the litter, always yapping at the moon” doesn’t sound like a promising start for a champion but Lizrene, a small brindle dog whelped in April 1970, was always a bit different. If Temlee was the king of the track in the 1970s, then Lizrene was the queen, with 56 wins, 19 seconds and 12 thirds from 97 starts. Sired out of Prince Kua and Joanne Lu, owned by Ann and Roma McGuinness and trained in Dandenong by Peter McGuinness, Lizrene is ranked as one of the all-time distance greats. She won over $61,000 (then an Australian record and close to $1,000,000 in current dollars) during her career, took out the 1972 and 1973 Sandown Cups and the Sandown and Olympic Park Distance Championships and was voted the inaugural 1973 Victorian Greyhound of the Year. A natural wide runner, Lizrene excelled as a champion stayer but was also very handy in sprint events, coming third over the sprint trip in the 1971 Melbourne Cup. Peter McGuinness put her success down to a combination of smarts and determination. “She wasn’t quick early but had a brain and was so determined and never gave up.” Extremely popular with the greyhound racing community, Lizrene was profiled in the Australian Women’s Weekly and always attracted big crowds until her retirement in late 1974. Lizrene went on to whelp four litters, including two with Temlee, and passed on in April 1981, aged 11 but lives on as a member of both the GRV and Australian Greyhound Racing Association’s Halls of Fame, a cheeky runt who outstayed the best in the big races.

2017 Launching Pad By Mick Floyd Entry forms for the 2017 Group 2 Launching Pad are now for sale. Now in its third year as a sweepstakes event, the 2017 Launching Pad carries $410,000 in prize money across three massive weeks of chasing. The Launching Pad differs to normal greyhound racing events in that positions in the heats are sold to owners, trainers, syndicates, clubs and industry bodies. Nominations for the series is for greyhounds with 1-6 wins and no more than 30 career starts. There are 80 entry forms available at $2000 each with all money raised added to the prize money pool with the winner of the

Launching Pad pocketing $150,000. The three-week series also features a consolation for greyhounds that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t progress to the semi-finals, the winner of which picks up $15,000. In all, over half of the greyhounds competing in the series will earn prize money. Entry forms are fully transferable ahead of the Friday 24 March deadline. Nominations for the series close at 8am on Monday 27 March, heats will be run on Thursday 30 March, semi-finals on Thursday 6 April, and the final on Thursday 13 April. “I got to know Anthony when a dog I trained called Felicity Lane was racing against Lilley Criminal. Anthony and I got to be good friends and I just love how he is with his dogs. His record speaks for itself, especially for someone so young, and he’s bonded so well with Reefton Treasure.” Azzopardi, who’s enjoyed incredible success since relocating from NSW to Victoria this time last year, didn’t have to be asked twice about finding a kennel for Reefton Treasure when Margaret came calling.

The tyranny of distance led to Bannerman, who’s based at tiny Reefton in the Riverina region of NSW, asking big race specialist Azzopardi to take over the reins with the Wheeler-bred powerhouse and she’s been rewarded with her first runner in a Group 1 event after 35 years in the sport.

“Let me tell you I was in the car within five minutes going to pick him up” Azzopardi laughed.

“I’m over the moon. I’m so excited,” Margaret said.

“Margaret is the nicest lady I’ve met in greyhound racing – she’s a great asset to our sport.”

“It was so hard to give Reefton Treasure to someone else because he’s the best dog I’ve ever had. I’ve had some good ones but he’s just a level above the others. “I decided to send him to Anthony after he fell at Wentworth Park. I didn’t want to take him back there for a while and for me to take him down to Melbourne is at least a six-hour drive, which has got to take something out of the dog. So for the sake of the dog it was the right thing to do. “It’s so funny because when I’m handling I never get nervous at all but sitting and waiting to watch him race I get so nervous!

“I was rapt to get the dog. To Margaret’s credit she once told me if she ever got a fast dog and decided to give it to someone else she would give it to me and she kept her word.

Margaret also paid tribute to Australia’s most successful breeders Paul and Jan Wheeler for their role in Reefton Treasure’s rise to sprinting stardom. “I’ve been friends with Paul and Jan since I was 16,” Margaret explained. “I trained Reefton Treasure’s mother Pindari Bale and Paul said I could have a pup out of her first litter. She only had a small litter so I said I would wait for her second litter and that’s how I got Reefton Treasure. Paul and Brendan reared him and broke him in. They’ve been fantastic and they’re so supportive.” 15

Young Trainer’s Epic Group One Win By Andrew Copley Swan Hill’s Matt Lanigan, who took up training greyhounds just three months ago, landed his first Group 1 win in the $100,000 Hobart Thousand (461m) with Zipping Bruiser on Thursday 23 December 2016. It was the eighth year in a row that a greyhound trained in Victoria has won the Hobart Thousand, with Zipping Bruiser storming home to defeat Chief Jetpilot (Ted Medhurst) and fellow Victorian American Monster (Ashlee Terry). “He’s a really strong dog and I was really nervous before the race, having quite a few sleepless nights and envisioning the race over and over in my head,” said Lanigan, 24. “I got really caught up in the emotion of it all during the race and could barely speak afterwards.” Talk about a dream start to a training career. Celebrating Diversity By Molly Haines. Why a greyhound you may ask? Pakenham resident Julie Dixon (below) will give you many good reasons to adopt a greyhound, because they all have a unique personality. “Greyhounds adapt so easily into most households and they are just so friendly. It is just so hard not to love them – you are really left wanting more!” Julie Dixon explained. Julie adopted her first greyhound Dell in 2010 after attending the Royal Melbourne Show and seeing the Greyhound Adoption stall. “We also had greyhounds as kids, but seeing them at the Melbourne Show really enticed me to get my very own,” Julie Dixon explained. Julie and her son Ben travelled to the Greyhound Adoption Program in Seymour to choose a greyhound, but they didn’t expect a greyhound would choose them.

“The dog definitely found us. It didn’t take Dell long to settle into our home and to show us just how beautiful she is.” It took just over a year for Julie to realise that she had room in her heart for one more greyhound Elly. Sadly, the Dixon’s first greyhound Dell passed away, but the heart-breaking experience of losing a greyhound only made Julie’s desire for another greyhound so much stronger. Julie and her son Ben now find themselves with three greyhounds; Tay, Jet and Elly, which range in age from six to ten. “They get along so well. They are just so lovely and affectionate but they are also so different,” Julie explained. Julie is just one of the many volunteers who spend countless hours advocating for the greyhound breed, whether it be at Adoption Days, Country Cups or just talking to people on the streets. “I really enjoy meeting the people and sharing stories about my greyhounds. Sometimes people even want to take mine home,” Julie laughed. “It is amazing how many people stop me on the street to ask me about greyhounds.” “I think it is important to advocate for the breed because they are the type of dog that is suitable to a lot of different households. Volunteering at events is such a positive experience I really do enjoy promoting the greyhounds and the sport.” Having a greyhound isn’t just about owning a dog – it’s about the relationship you build with the people you meet who are involved with the breed.

“You meet so many people with a common love for greyhounds, which forms great bonds and lasting friendships.”

NAME: EMMA COTSELL DEPARTMENT: ANIMAL WELFARE JOB TITLE: FOSTER CARE MANAGER WITH both a personal and professional background in volunteering, the inaugural GRV Foster Care Manager, Emma Cotsell, says she is excited about the challenges and variety her role will present. During a stint living in the United Kingdom, Emma worked in London in the museum sector, including at the British Museum, and she also volunteered at the London Olympics. Her experience with animals came from volunteering for organisations such as the Battersea Dogs Home in London. Now 12 weeks into her new job, Emma’s role was created to further expand the opportunities for greyhounds to live long and healthy lives, as well as to further assist the dedicated volunteers of the Greyhound Adoption Program. “It’s very important to recognise and support the wonderful volunteers we have within our program who are such a critical partner of our organisation. It is also important that we assist the volunteers with updated training, and communicate with them properly,” she said. Emma explained that the fostering component of becoming involved with greyhounds was very important and encouraged people who are contemplating adopting a greyhound to foster first if they were “not so sure”. “It’s great for people who might not be quite ready to adopt, as well as those who have a passion for animal welfare and volunteering,” she said. Fostering a greyhound takes approximately three weeks, which Emma says starts with very basic training. “It involves taking the dog into your home and looking after him or her just like a normal pet,” she said. "While many greyhounds have had experiences living in a home, for some which have come from a recent racing environment, they will benefit from spending time getting used to different surfaces, being outside in a backyard environment, walking on a leash down the street and toilet training. Some of them, which have been in kennels for a while, develop their personality a little bit more too.” Emma said the creation of her role was part of GRV’s animal welfare priority. “My role is about animal welfare becoming central to everything, and recognising that fostering is important to welfare and ensuring greyhounds find permanent homes,” she said.

GAP Testing Dates NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well: • Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au • All sessions for February - April 2017 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. • To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: - have a current C5 vaccination; and - not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at greyhoundcare. grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing. • Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. • Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP.

Bark in the Park as Melbourne Aces Brisbane By Andrew Copley. Almost a dozen pet greyhounds were among the many canines in the crowd at Melbourne Ballpark on Sunday 8 January, as the Jet Courier Melbourne Aces baseball team secured a series win over reigning premiers the Brisbane Bandits. The Aces hosted its annual Bark in the Park event on the day – sponsored by GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program – at which fans are invited to bring along their pet dogs. As part of GAP’s sponsorship, people with greyhounds got into the game for free, and the day was another great opportunity to showcase the greyhound breed to the wider public.

Adopting Success By Molly Haines. A staggering 48 out of 50 greyhounds found loving homes on Sunday 8 January following GAP’s most successful Adoption Day ever held in Seymour. The two remaining dogs were adopted out after the day. The Adoption Day capped off an amazing start to the year for Victoria’s Greyhound Adoption Program, which has seen more than 60 greyhounds find homes in 2017 so far. “We are overwhelmed with the success of the Adoption Day, it’s a great outcome to see 48 greyhounds find new families,” Greyhound Adoption Program Manager Larissa Hubbard said. “We have never held an Adoption Day in January before so it was great to see such a large crowd turnout.” “The great thing about holding Adoption Days here at Seymour is that potential adopters can bring their own pet dogs to meet the greyhounds. Virtually every day is an Adoption Day here at Seymour; so there will be plenty more greyhounds for potential adopters to meet throughout the year.” “Everyone here at GAP would like to take the time to thank the volunteers, because without their hard work and dedication a day like today wouldn’t have been possible,” Larissa said. Club Profile While horses have been racing at Cranbourne since the 1860’s, greyhound racing didn’t come to the town until 1974 when a group of leading Victorian greyhound trainers and owners received a licence to start a greyhound racing club at the Cranbourne Racing Centre, the only venue in Victoria that conducts all three codes of racing - thoroughbred, harness and greyhound. Today the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club is one of Victoria’s leading regional hubs for the sport, offering free entry to around 60 meetings each year with more than 6000 greyhounds competing over 311, 520 and 699 metres. The club’s biggest meetings are the $47,000 Cranbourne Cup in February - the third leg of the Gippsland Carnival - and the $25,000 Cranbourne Classic in August. Around 10,000 people annually attend greyhound race meetings at Cranbourne, enjoying some of the best greyhound racing facilities in the state, including a two-story grandstand with great views of the track, along with restaurants, bars and function rooms, all set in a picturesque 450-acre site that also includes large harness and thoroughbred racing stables.

CRANBOURNE GREYHOUND RACING CLUB The three racing codes work closely together at the Cranbourne Racing Centre and every November, present the unique Tricodes event with eight greyhound, eight harness and seven thoroughbred races all held on the one night. Along with its sister clubs Traralgon, Sale, and Warragul, Cranbourne contributes more than $40 million to the Gippsland economy each year, directly employing 16 people and generating hundreds more indirect local jobs by providing goods and services for the sport and the club. The club also supports many local community groups through events like the Great Chase and the Red Dog Run, sponsors local football and netball competitions and hosts up to 150 private and community events annually. The current Club Committee includes President Greg Carter, Senior Vice President and Treasurer Nick Barnett, Junior Vice President Barry Toner and committee members John Van Echteld and Noel Boyd. Amanda Cameron is currently the acting Chief Executive Officer.
