GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
JANUARY 2017
CEO’s Update As we enter 2017, I think it’s worth reflecting on what’s been achieved over the past year by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) and the sport. GRV has been substantially reformed in line with the recommendations by the Racing Integrity Commissioner and the Chief Veterinarian. Local Rules of Racing have been updated and revised, a new registration framework now better regulates participants and animal welfare rules have been strengthened. More dogs are being rehomed and new breeding controls have been introduced while racing opportunities have been improved for greyhounds of all ages and opportunities. GRV also significantly strengthened its ability to capture and analyse data across a range of issues including breeding, whelping, track injuries, retirements, euthanasia, and rehoming and established a risk-based framework to help ensure the sport’s integrity. The consultation process for a new round of proposed rule changes has also been completed and GRV is now considering some very comprehensive submissions on this issue. The Industry Consultative Group and Stakeholder Workshops have helped guide this reform process while giving participants a vibrant forum for leading discussion and generating ideas about the sport’s future across a range of issues. GRV will be presenting more such workshops and other consultative forums in 2017 with a strong focus on regional Victoria. Other highlights in 2016 included a major expansion of the animal welfare and integrity teams with the swabbing budget tripled and 80 property inspections a week now being conducted. The year also saw the launch of Greyhound Care and Standards website and Greyhound Monthly Victoria, the opening of GAP’s new Mount Mercer assessment centre and a new Enterprise Bargaining
Agreement to provide a stronger career structure for GRV stewards, who are now also authorised to take swabs which relieves the pressure on race day vets. Much of the major reform work is now complete and 2017 will be a year where GRV focuses on delivering programs and initiatives to build on this work. Grading guidelines will be reviewed to make sure they are fully consistent and properly implemented and the Gippsland Carnival, now underway, highlights how GRV will step up its marketing and promotion of the sport in 2017. The $34 million infrastructure program will start rolling out to improve racing, club and GAP facilities and operations. Participant education and support programs will also be stepped up and GRV will work more closely with owners to help them meet their rehoming responsibilities. Speaking of re-homing, GRV is also trialling a new greyhound recovery initiative to help rehabilitate and rehome dogs that experience certain career-ending injuries at the track. Treatment for such injuries can be costly, especially for smaller and hobbyist participants, so GRV will pay for all treatment costs if the owner genuinely can’t afford them and then enter the dog into GAP if no other home can be found. The trial is being initially conducted with all race day vets who will assess injured dogs to determine if they have good prospects for recovery and so eligible for the trial. 2016 was one of the biggest years of change for the sport in many decades and it has not been an easy journey for everyone. But thanks to the commitment to reform and hard work of participants, the clubs and GRV, I am now confident that the future of the sport is looking much stronger and that 2017 will be a year of consolidation, growth and more great racing.

Brockie Delivers Trainer a Birthday Gift By Andrew Copley Local superstar Zambora Brockie won the 2016 $110,000 Energis Ballarat Cup on 2 December 2016, for Myrniong trainer Anthony Azzopardi. It was a big couple of days for the former NSW trainer, who celebrated his birthday by snaring his second group win in two days after Topper Terretto won the Puppy Championship at Dapto the day before. The Ballarat Cup win was icing on the cake, as not only did Zambora Brockie collect the $77,000 first prize, he also won the $50,000 country cups bonus, taking his night’s work to $127,000.
4
“He did it the hard way,” Azzopardi said after the win. “He found trouble which cost him three or four lengths, but I knew when he got clear and straightened up he’d be hard to beat.” Zambora Brockie is the toast of the town. “I’m very proud to call this my local track. We live only half an hour away and all the staff here (at Ballarat) are fantastic, as are all the people who have come out here tonight. All of the trainers and owners appreciate (everyone’s) support.” “It’s a privilege to be a trainer in Victoria. I’ve raced in a lot of states and Victoria is 10 lengths clear of the rest,” Azzopardi said.

Anthony said training his team of dogs was a team effort that involved the help of close friends and family.

Hundredth Start Revitalises Khan’s Career By Andrew Copley Veteran greyhound Bojack Khan turned his fortunes around with a recent purple patch of form, despite being on the verge of his fifth birthday. On 23 November, when the fawn sprinter headed to Bendigo for his 100th race start, in a Grade 5 Tier 3 event, he was without a win for 18 weeks and no placings in his previous nine starts. However, the Sheila Donlon-trained greyhound lifted for the occasion, coming from behind to score his 13th career victory and paying $6.60. He has since made it a hat-track of wins and his career has been revitalised. Although delighted with Bojack Khan’s form reversal, Sheila wasn’t totally surprised. “He had a corn on his toe which was bothering him and it took a while to go away. But we kept treating it and got it down to next to nothing and now he is back to his best winning three in a row,” the trainer from Bunbank in Western Victoria said.
Gippsland Trainer Chases Carnival Glory By Bridget Scott
“He loves to race. He’s been doing it for so long that he sometimes can’t be bothered getting weighed and going over the vet’s table before a race, but once he’s anywhere near the starting boxes he comes to life. He’s really determined and just wants to get to the front and win.”
A prominent Gippsland trainer well known for her work with champion greyhound El Grand Senor has thrown her support behind the Gippsland Carnival.
While so often competing against greyhounds with far less experience than himself, Bojack Khan’s 100th race was one of particular note, with the eight starters having had a combined 651 starts.
Rosedale local Carolyn Jones has described it as a fantastic opportunity, and said how lucky Gippsland trainers are to have facilities like they do in the local area.
Runner-up was Oaklands, who was having his 119th race, while Jack’s Prince (111 starts) and Cosmic Pauly (93 starts) were others in the race with significant experience.
“There are so many people involved from Gippsland, so many families, and we have such good facilities – at Sale in particular,” she said. “The club also does a lot for the community, and you will never go there and people aren’t around.”
The eight runners had a combined average of 81 starts and $15,500 in prize money.
"We can race at Sale, Traralgon, Warragul, Sandown, Cranbourne there's a lot of dogs in the area, and maybe not so many professional trainers, but that's not a bad thing," she laughed.
It’s a credit to owners and trainers whose race dogs have lengthy racing careers, as greyhounds racing for longer leads to fewer needing to be re-homed because fewer are needed for racing.
"It's a great opportunity, and I think people are realising that." Jones got involved with the dogs more than 20 years ago after she took a shine to a greyhound in her parents boarding kennels. Since then her career as a trainer has sky- rocketed, experiencing huge success with Elgrando (2002 Traralgon Cup & 2003 Perth Cup) and then all-time great El Grand Senor, which had 35 wins from 43 starts including three Victorian country cups and the Melbourne Cup (2010). The greyhound trainer said the Gippsland Carnival should present an excellent opportunity for locals to see top-class racing. "It's terrific, from every angle - encouraging the public to come along, for local dogs to race, and to bring more dogs to our area," she said. "Sandown has their Melbourne Cup Carnival, and The Meadows has the Australia Cup, but to combine all the Gippsland racing and have a bonus for sprinters, I think that's a very good idea. "It gives a chance to the locals - and racing's better when you're watching dogs at the top of their game."

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
JUST BREATHE Feature Article By Molly Haines A community is defined as a group of people who have a characteristic in common. Community spirit is the feeling of involvement within that circle. Across all 13 clubs throughout Victoria, camaraderie is ever-present, and a young boy by the name of Darragh is just one example of how it works. Darragh is the one-year-old son of greyhound trainer Tony and his wife Christine Hyde. Both come from Ireland, making the journey to Melbourne to experience the thrill of greyhound racing in Victoria. Tony and Christine have experienced firsthand how vital community is. Darragh has Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a genetic disorder that develops an abnormal amount of mucus in the lungs, airways and the digestive system, which makes it hard for the body to digest food and absorb oxygen. There is currently no cure, and for first time Dad and full-time carer Tony, the support their family has received has made a hard transition that little bit easier. “Living with CF means waking up to five different medications, physio and keeping a constant eye on Darragh, but being a father is the best experience anyone could ask for. I love being a Dad.” Darragh currently has 100% lung capacity, and everything Tony and Christine do is about preventing his condition from getting worse. “I was and still am, blown away with how many people offer to help me with Darragh at the track, even before they found out Darragh was sick. I can have half a dozen people offering help whilst I am at tracks.” “It really is overwhelming all the support we are being offered. It makes our lives a lot easier and I can continue to race my dogs, which is something I love doing. Darragh loves the dogs too, he is always wanting to pat them!”Tony said. Darragh was diagnosed with CF in October 2015, which Tony and Christine knew very little about, but they received endless support from the Royal Children’s Hospital who had staff spend two days educating the new parents. As a thank you to the Royal Children’s Hospital, and to support further research, Tony has decided to donate the prize money earned by one of his greyhounds, which he also bred. Tony is grateful he can support the scientists who continue to work to find a cure. “I really wanted to donate money to CF research to provide a bright future for children who are also diagnosed.” When Tony moved to Australia he worked for Lara trainer Robert Britton, which is where he got to know the greyhound Famor Las Vegas, the stud dog he used to sire his latest litter of puppies. The litter is now 18 months old, and Tony is waiting to pick the best pup in the litter to be the one to run in support of CF research. “If I train the dog I will donate 100% of their earnings to CF research, I want to be able to help kids like Darragh,”Tony said.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Strategic Communication & Marketing Monthly Report By Louise Martin - General Manager The past month has seen many opportunities to positively promote greyhound racing and the Strategic Communications and Marketing team have been making sure that as many people as possible have an opportunity to attend our 13 clubs and participate in our events. A highly successful Melbourne Cup campaign was followed by the annual Ready 2 Race event in Bendigo, spearheaded by GRV ambassador Nick Dal Santo, who grew up in this region. Meantime, a key campaign for Strategic Communications and Marketing coming into summer has been the launch of the inaugural Gippsland Carnival encompassing the Sale, Warragul, Cranbourne and Traralgon country cups. This is a ground-breaking initiative that unites the four clubs based in an area that is passionate about greyhound racing. With greyhound racing contributing $40 million to the Gippsland
area, our sport plays a significant part in eastern Victoria and this carnival promises to further boost its prominence. A media launch was held at Seaspray beach on the first day of summer and featured Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy and four greyhounds who sprinted along the beach in front of all the waiting cameras who beamed the pictures throughout the state to let the world know about this exciting carnival. Later that day we held a community event in Traralgon that brought together business, community and political leaders right throughout Gippsland in support of our initiative. The first of the four cups took place in Sale on December 26 and we are looking forward to seeing the momentum of this carnival carry all the way through to Traralgon on March 25. There will be many more opportunities for people to engage with our sport over the next 12 months, so please check our website and those of the clubs featuring our main events.
Animal Welfare Monthly Report By Gavin Goble - General Manager Since the commencement of the new Welfare Inspectors in November 2016, GRV has increased welfare visits to 80 properties per week. The Welfare Inspectors report that they have generally been well received by participants, and that participants have been co-operative and accommodating. It is projected that the Inspectorate will have capacity to visit over 80% of all GRV registered greyhounds in 2017, with both announced and unannounced visits. This reflects GRV’s deep commitment to improving animal welfare, which will largely focus on educating participants on best-practice animal welfare and husbandry principles. The Welfare Inspectors look forward to working with participants in 2017 to achieve the very best welfare outcomes for greyhounds. Reducing the instances of euthanasia of greyhounds at the race track because of serious injury remains a top priority for GRV. To achieve this, GRV is trialling a new Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI) which will fully fund the costs of veterinary treatment for greyhounds with certain serious injuries that would otherwise be euthanased at the race track due to the financial constraints of the owner. The trial will run at all Victorian race tracks with greyhounds being treated at Sandown Veterinary Clinic. Greyhounds that are treated as part of the GRI will be retired to GAP, de-sexed and re-homed. The trial will be closely monitored by GRV over the coming months to determine the best way to implement the GRI to a wider range of veterinary clinics across Victoria. To thank GAP’s dedicated volunteers for another bumper year, a family lunch was held at GAP Seymour on Saturday 10 December. A wonderful day was had by all with a barbeque in the sunshine,
8
live jazz and a visit from Santa who had treats for all (including greyhounds). It was a fantastic opportunity for volunteers to meet and catch up with their two and four legged friends, and for GRV to express its gratitude for the invaluable contribution that volunteers make to GAP each year, as foster carers, and ambassadors in the wider community. Recently in particular, volunteers made a huge contribution to the agricultural show season, giving many hours around the state to meet with show visitors and introduce them to greyhounds. To provide further opportunity for participants wanting to get their greyhounds into GAP, we are offering a weekend pre-entry assessment testing day in January, and if successful will aim to provide more opportunities such as this in the future. The new booking system accessed by emailing or phoning Member Services is working well. Currently sessions are booked out only 2½ months ahead, and as we have dates available into March, there are no greyhounds on the waiting list. The new system does require every greyhound to have a wind-down period from a racing environment of at least four weeks to increase the likelihood of them passing the temperament test. For more information see the ‘Racing to Retirement’ booklet available through Member Services or at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ retirement-from-racing. Finally, the public consultation period on the proposed animal welfare focused racing rule changes closed on 23 November 2016. GRV has appreciated the positive and constructive feedback received, with the most significant feedback being in relation to the proposed socialisation, enrichment and education rule changes. The submissions are currently being reviewed by GRV and a further update will be provided in early 2017.
Should you have any feedback or suggestions regarding welfare initiatives or opportunities, please contact me directly on ggoble@grv.org.au

Racing, Wagering & Business Development Monthly Report By Stuart Laing - General Manager
Selection Types
2017 GRADING REVIEW
Currently for Full Stakes meetings the “top down” method is used. This means that the highest graded dogs, nominated for the longest distance races are selected first, down through to the Maidens over the shortest distance last. Half Stakes meetings use bottom up (or dedicated meetings)
Following the GRV Workshops and consultation sessions conducted throughout 2016 as well as reviewing the general questions and queries regarding the GRV Grading process, GRV is undertaking a full review of all Grading related processes which is now underway. Some of the important matters which are under consideration as part of the Grading Review are set out below. Aged Prize Money (APM) We recently advised of modifications to the Aged Prize Money (APM) table. The changes to the APM are aimed at better representing the greyhound’s current ability to win prize money. This APM value would be used to determine which greyhounds are selected for each race in a meeting. Grades We also want to simplify the Grades including considerations as to whether there are too many Grades. We will also look at how relevant having a different grade at each track over each distance is in today’s greyhound racing environment in Victoria. Grading and Selection To simplify the grading and selection process it is also necessary to review the various selection methods – ie. order of entry rights (currently 8 different types) with the aim to condense these that would apply to all meetings – perhaps 2 – one for Maidens, and then one for the graded greyhounds.
Compulsory Trials for First Starters
Objectives Key objectives of the Review are: • To simplify current grading processes which are complex and difficult to understand • To better cater for older greyhounds that are no longer as competitive as they once were • To better look after inexperienced and Maiden greyhounds • To improve racing opportunities for all greyhounds whelped The Review Process The Review has commenced and will be undertaken in consultation with the industry over the coming months, with the objective of implementing any changes before the commencement of the new racing season in July 2017. 1. Conduct on-line survey 2. Publish survey results 3. Draft new Grading & Selection Guidelines 4. Publish proposed new Guidelines – Grader to attend each track to seek feedback 5. Develop FastTrack changes 6. Implement
Feedback provided through the Stakeholder Engagement Workshops and from Clubs as part of responses to initiatives to reduce track injuries, suggests that the introduction of compulsory field trials for first starters should be considered as a method for potentially assisting in reducing injuries and interference in races. GRV does not currently have any Rules or Policies in place which require greyhounds to trial satisfactorily before being allowed to compete in races. Some other States (most notably NSW) do have a compulsory trial requirement in place as part of policy. We are working through possible options and seeking feedback from the industry around this topic. Should participants wish to provide feedback please email: racingdepartment@grv.org.au with the subject line: ‘Performance Trials’ by 31 January 2017.
HAVE YOUR SAY
To better understand the views of trainers and owners, the GRV Racing department is conducting a survey in relation to grading and race selection with the aim of best catering for the entire greyhound racing population. The survey will be open for submissions until 15 January 2017. To have your say, go to:

Talk
with Mark Duclos
I’m not sure whether it happens faster as we get older or it’s just an illusion, but 2016 seemingly went in a blink of an eye. The New Year has already kicked off with the first Group 1 event, the time honoured Silver Chief Classic decided at The Meadows, and the inaugural (and hugely successful) Gippsland Cup carnival is now in full swing. Given the turmoil the industry suffered in NSW last year, I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping that in 2017 we see greyhound racing in the headlines for all the right reasons. Racing at the elite level always delivers on its promise of being an exciting affair with huge prizemoney on offer and I’m sure many people are wondering just when or where the next superstar of the track will appear. In the sprint ranks, Zambora Brockie is closer to the end of his career than the beginning and the door is now wide open for another chaser to stamp their claim as the best in the land. Stayer wise, and although Burn One Down was beaten in the G1 Sale Cup heats, there is no denying the raw ability that he has and with an ounce of luck in any race, he can run the hands off the clock. 2016 was also a watershed year for so many of our trainers who prepared their first-ever Group 1 winner and while the likes of Jason Thompson and adopted Victorian, Anthony Azzopardi, continue to have great success with their teams, it’s impossible for them to win everything, which makes it even more intriguing every time another feature events rolls along. And when it comes to feature events, there is no doubt that Victoria continues to set the benchmark both on and off the track. We are about to head into the rich Australian Cup series at The Meadows where four Group 1 races will be decided including $250,000 to the winner of the Australian Cup and given the success of past winners such as Dyna Double One and My Bro Fabio, breeders should take note of the winner of the Cup as they invariably find their way to the stud ranks. I’m often stopped at the track by greyhound fans and am asked, “When do you think we’ll see another Fernando Bale?” – my response is pretty stock standard – “I’m not sure we will for a long while, but who knows, it could be in this next race.” And that’s the beauty of greyhound racing – you never ever know what’s around the corner. TAB Fixed Odds: Don’t forget TAB.com.au are proud sponsors of Greyhound racing in Victoria and offers Fixed Odds betting on every greyhound race held in Australia…here at Sky Racing, we’ll continue to support the industry with our feature programmes including The Catching Pen, which is now in its 19th year of production, as well as our form preview programme, At The Boxes. Here’s hoping that 2017 is a year to remember!
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
A REGULAR LOOK BACK AT THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF GREYHOUND RACING Temlee, the Sale Superstar With the Gippsland Carnival now in full swing, it’s a good time to look back at one of the region’s great champions - Temlee, the superstar from Sale. Bred in 1972 by Barry Bailey, a former Sale Greyhound Racing Club president, Temlee was bought at two months by Maffra Hotel owner Ray Hocken for $135, an amazing bargain as it turned out. However the pup almost never made it to the track, contracting near fatal cases of distemper and hepatitis, but was nursed back to health by his trainer, Frank Cray, a Sale railway worker. Temlee rewarded this care and devotion with one of the greatest careers in Australian greyhound racing, starting at the Sale track in August 1973 and going onto 21 wins, one second and one third place from 31 races over 15 months and winning over $26,000 in prize money. Among his career highlights were the 1974 National Sprint Championship, the 1974 Maturity Stakes, the 1974 Victorian Greyhound of the Year award and holding the track record at Olympic Park for ten years, cheered on by all the locals at the Maffra Hotel as their boy. While occasionally a bit tardy out of the box, Temlee made up for it with the blistering acceleration that made him one of the alltime great sprinters and a crowd favourite. Sadly, the easy-going brindle flyer, who’s kennel name was Tiger, ended his racing career with a cracked bone in his left hind leg at Olympic Park in November 1974. But his contribution to the sport didn’t end there and Temlee went on to sire 735 litters and a string of great racers including Satan’s Legend, Tempix, Tangaloa, Chief Dingaan, World Acclaim and Roy Trease and winning the Victorian Sires’ Premiership five years running from 1978 to 1982.Temlee passed away in November 1984 after a stroke, but the Sale superstar’s legacy lives on at the Temlee Bar in his home club at Sale and in the bloodlines of many great racers today.

READY 2 RACE Greyhound Sales a Success By Andrew Copley The numbers have been crunched from GRV’s 2016 Ready 2 Race greyhound sales at Bendigo last November, with a total of $355,600 spent across the day and night auctions. The Day auction ran from 12:00-3:30pm, while the Night auction – which was restricted to the 50 fastest greyhounds from the heats before being whittled down to 45 – ran from 6:30-8:30pm. Around 300 people attended the Night auction which created a bidding frenzy, with only one greyhound being passed in. GRV’s Ready 2 Race concept reached an all-time high at Bendigo with Lucky (pictured) selling for a record $31,000.

Zack Smith and family with Ketut

Kiss Me Ketut Has Found His Sunrise
Seymour, but that bond may have been tested by Ketut’s as he used Zack as a human leaning post.
By Molly Haines.
It didn’t worry Zack at all though. “Ketut was just so friendly!” he said, laughing it off.
Kiss Me Ketut may no longer be recording victories on the racetrack, but he is certainly enjoying the next stage of his life – retirement. Kiss Me Ketut, more informally known as Ketut, was and still is one of Greyhound Racing Victoria’s most highly decorated Ready 2 Race greyhounds, who drew crowd support and entertained punters throughout a career that saw him win more than $250,000 from 80 starts (24 wins and 24 minor placings). Trainer and past owner David Burnett still labels Ketut as one of the best dogs he has put a lead around – and it isn’t just because of his talent on the track, his personality is something David will never forget. “He is a special dog,” David said. “I spent three months trying to find a home for him myself because I wanted to find the right person for him who was local so I could keep in contact.”
“We fostered him with the view to adopt but I knew in the car on the way home he wasn’t going back.” “He has fit into our household as if he has been here forever. He sleeps in my room, well sometimes even on my bed – I really can’t believe how much he sleeps.” Zack has loved having a greyhound in his family so much he now has a second, Jacqui, who has become Ketut’s long lost friend. “They get along great! Sometimes I catch them laying on my bed together,” Zack said. Ketut’s success as a retired racer is owed to his trainer and past owner David Burnet who went to countless walking groups to help socialise his star chaser – and now he’s in a home he loves!
When finding a home in close proximity became difficult David decided to turn to the assistance of the Greyhound Adoption Program. “I didn’t want to part ways with Ketut, but my living arrangements don’t allow me to have a pet. The main reason I put him through GAP is because he is such a lovely dog and I know that he will enjoy life outside racing just as much as he did in it,” David continued. Two months into life as a pet, Ketut is in the care of 20-year-old Commerce and Law student Zack Smith. Ketut and Zack’s bond was apparent from their first meeting at

Inaugural Gippsland Carnival to Progress to Warragul in January
Region Versus Region in Gippsland Carnival
Greyhound racing’s new Gippsland Carnival is now in full swing with the Sale Cup (650m) and Gippsland Carnival Sprint Launch (440) run and won at the Sale Greyhound Racing Club on Boxing Day evening.
By Molly Haines.
We now look to the Warragul Cup (January), Cranbourne Cup (February) and Traralgon Cup (March) for the remaining legs of the 2016/17 Gippsland Carnival. Each of these cups meetings is incorporating heats and finals of both a sprint and distance series (including the cups), with the best performing greyhounds to earn points towards sharing in bonus prize money to the value of $20,000 (sprint) and $15,000 (distance). Greyhounds earn points by achieving top four finishes in heats and finals in any of eight specified events (refer to table below), with the Gippsland Carnival’s champion sprinter and champion stayer to be determined on 2017 Traralgon Cup night, 25 March. Keep track of the Gippsland Carnival running points tallies at grv.org.au
2016/17 GIPPSLAND CARNIVAL STRUCTURE
POINTS SYSTEM RELATING TO BONUS PRIZE MONEY
With $40 million being injected into the Gippsland region, the new Gippsland Carnival for greyhounds is a much-needed lift for a community that has suffered after the announcement of the Hazelwood power station closure. “I think for a community that is feeling the brunt of a couple of big power stations closing and an unstable economy - a chance to have a night out that won’t break the budget is a positive for the community,” Hazelwood greyhound trainer Gavin Burke said. “It is a time to celebrate and enjoy greyhound racing. Greyhound Racing Victoria are putting more than $800,000 in prize money into the racing side of the carnival – that kind of money is life changing and even if you take a small piece of the pie I’m sure it will go a long way to making the new year even better.” Burke, who trains star sprinter Pantera Nera, is taking advantage of the new incentive for both stayers and sprinters to compete throughout all four legs of the carnival. Each of the cup meetings incorporate heats and finals of both a sprint and a distance series with the best performing greyhounds earning points towards bonus prize money of $20,000 in the sprint and $15,000 in the distance. “I think that’s important, as I think the stayers don’t get left behind because there is a lot of prize money up for grabs. It is great to encourage both stayers and sprinters to race on the same program, it puts a bit of interest around where people are going to place their dogs – you definitely have to be more strategic if you are any hope of the bonus prize money,” Burke said. Having won last year’s Traralgon Cup, Pantera Nera will be looking to defend his crown by competing in the sprint side of the carnival. The Gippsland region houses a strong community of greyhound trainers who are out to support each other and are hoping to hold the home advantage over greyhound trainers across the State. “There is a good support network throughout Gippsland, we do what we can to help each other.” “We definitely want to try and keep the prize money from the Gippsland Carnival with us.” Pantera Nera has won 22 races from 44 starts, which includes multiple group victories, and has accumulated more than $180,000 in prize money. “I love absolutely everything about Pantera Nera, but I think that his tenacity and attitude help his cause.”

who have air conditioning also use these rugs and have found this combination much better that just air conditioning. It is also possible to wear the cooling rugs to the starting boxes prior to racing and many trainers have given testimonials as to the benefits of using them for travelling, and before and after a race. The committee are currently meeting with GRV about many areas of concern for participants. The major ones are: 1. That re-registration after disqualification becomes a smooth process with the formation of one department to assist and reduce the current drawn-out process that can take many more months than the actual disqualification. This can be costly as well as stressful for our trainers and we want to ensure that they are not discouraged to the stage where they just give up. 2. That Local Rules are fair and reasonable and only introduced where necessary to achieve a required outcome. 3. That more information is forthcoming through either text messages, Greyhound Monthly Victoria or pamphlets distributed at race tracks, to educate people about the ongoing changes that are being implemented, as well as inform participants about any new food or supplement contaminants that trainers should be aware of. This will help the many who do not have internet skills.
By Sandra Reed - President As you are all aware the most important requirement for owners of greyhounds in the hot weather is to keep them as cool as possible, knowing they don’t have the capacity to reduce body temperature rapidly without assistance, either by hosing down with cool water or putting a cooling rug on. The importance of reducing core temperature after a race has been the topic of a study in South Australia and the outcome has been that all tracks in SA on heat affected days are now supplied with cooling rugs at the catching pen. Consequently we will be recommending that this should also happen in Victoria. However, it your responsibility to get your dog to the track unaffected by high temperatures and the best way to achieve that is to have a cooling rug on your dog from the minute you leave home until you arrive in the air conditioned kennels. Many trainers

4. We have been impressing for some time how important it is that clubs provide catchers for those who have trouble finding a catcher, especially in late races when many people have left the track. Sandown now provides catchers and the system works well, so thank you to Sandown for leading the way. Let’s hope we can encourage other clubs to assist trainers by providing this great service. It has come to our notice that many members don’t open their emails, so please check those sent from GOTBA, as we have been sending newsletters and information to you via email, if you provided us with your email address. Good luck in 2017, let’s move forward together, supporting each other wherever possible to make our sport the best that it can possibly be.

Participants Reminded of Race Day Animal Welfare Obligations Victorian participants are reminded of updated hot weather and transport policies which outline their animal welfare responsibilities on race days and trial days and which came into effect on 12 December 2016. To assist participants who are transitioning to air-conditioned trailers, GRV has put in place transitional arrangements for a period of three months (12 December 2016 – 12 March 2017) to provide additional time for participants to undertake works to their trailers to comply with the new requirements for airconditioning on heat affected days.
Greyhound Vet Dr. Chris Boemo Features in New Educational Video Series Greyhound Racing Victoria is delighted to have recently published a series of videos focusing on caring for greyhounds in an emergency situation. Highly-respected Victorian greyhound veterinarian, Dr. Chris Boemo, features throughout the series, with the first episode outlining essential first aid materials that greyhound breeders, rearers, educators and trainers should always have at their disposal. Dr. Boemo explains that the immediate and correct use of certain first aid items for bandaging or splinting injuries can lessen the chances of further harm occurring before getting your greyhound to a vet. “In order to provide basic first aid you need basic first aid materials to stop or compress bleeding, support an injured or fractured limb or to hold whatever dressings you put in place until you can get to definitive treatment,” Dr. Boemo said. Dr. Boemo showcases a combination of basic supplies that greyhound participants should keep in their first aid kits, all of which are readily available at vet clinics, chemists and in most supermarkets at a low cost. He estimated that spending between $20 and $40 on basic supplies is sufficient to complete a basic first aid kit for greyhounds, and that ideally your kit would be transportable. “You don’t necessarily need a first aid kit at home, as well as one in the kennel and one in the car. You can transport one first aid kit from point a, to point b, to point c, depending on where you are. That’s going to cut your costs down, and as long as you remember where it is you will be able to access it when you need it,” he said. Dr. Boemo said that while applying immediate first aid can be hugely beneficial, he stressed that prolonging diagnosis and treatment from a qualified vet can be detrimental to your greyhound’s health, well-being and chances of making a full recovery. The four-part video series with Dr. Boemo covers the following topics: - Basic first aid - Bandaging - Splinting - Acidosis To watch the series go to

During the transition period, if a participant doesn’t have access to an air-conditioned trailer and they need to transport greyhounds where their travel is heat affected, GRV will permit transportation in trailers without air-conditioning if: • The participant does not have an air-conditioned trailer and can’t reasonably get access to one, and • The trailer is fitted with a properly fitted and functioning power-assisted ventilation system that operates throughout the entire journey, and • A thermometer has been fitted to the inside of the trailer and the temperature is checked and recorded in a log book at the start of the journey, at each break and at the end of the journey. Participants are reminded that regardless of the form of transport used, the internal temperature of a vehicle or trailer transporting a greyhound must be maintained at 32 degrees or lower. Participants who do not currently own an air-conditioned trailer are encouraged to seek access to, and use of, alternative forms of compliant transport. Peggy-Lou Passes Fostering Milestone By Gerard Guthrie When Peggy-Lou Athorn made a promise to help greyhounds she meant it, recently chalking up a remarkable milestone, having fostered more than fifty greyhounds through GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program. “I think I’ve just hit 52 with my little Pixie!” Peggy-Lou laughed. Peggy-Lou’s love affair with greyhounds dates back to her schoolgirl years, when left to her own devices at Sandown while her father completed stewarding duties, although it was her other great canine passion that led her down the fostering path. “My dad taught me to love greyhounds and bull terriers,” PeggyLou said. “Many, many years ago, before the GAP had started, I had a bull terrier that got very sick and needed all the blood we could get. I asked where all the blood was coming from and was told that greyhounds are universal donors and it usually comes from them. “So right then and there I made a promise to help greyhounds one day. “Unfortunately my bull terrier didn’t make it and I got another one, which lived for 16 years, but when it passed away I was a bit lost, as you are, for about a year. I’d followed the progression of GAP and got on the website and saw a disabled greyhound that needed a home and thought maybe this is what I’m meant to do.”
GRV Staff Profile NAME: SIMON TODMAN DEPARTMENT: ANIMAL WELFARE JOB TITLE: EDUCATION OFFICER What do you do at GRV?
It seems Peggy-Lou has indeed found her calling, fostering greyhounds for three to four weeks at a time as they prepare for adoption and life as a pet.
I am an Education Officer – one of three - which makes us a form of communication for GRV to speak to participants on a one-on-one basis, and provide updates. We also communicate and advocate back to GRV on behalf of participants. With plenty of rules and regulations being put in place that our participants need to about, we need to engage with them.
“It’s an absolute pleasure to have them,” Peggy-Lou said.
What attracted you to the role?
“It’s a real roller coaster – you’re up and down the whole time – but I just love them and couldn’t be without them.
I wanted to get back into sports and I thought the best way to gain knowledge in any industry is by working at the coalface. Firstly, I worked as a steward, and then the Education role came up and it really suited my skills. I genuinely like people and have a natural empathy and enjoy listening to what they have to say.
“It’s a very quick process, basically trying to show them things that we take for granted and other dogs take for granted. “I seem to get the two-year-olds that are a little bit crazy! They never get old, they’re all babies, always naughty, always funny. They’re real cards. Even though they’re very calm and relaxed they’ve got a really funny personality. It’s quite funny watching them watch television for the first time or looking at themselves in the mirror! “It’s not hard because they’re used to being trained and they’re used to listening. All they need is a half-hour walk each day and everybody needs that! Apart from that they’re generally pretty lazy and just want to lie around on the lounge! I try to take them everywhere I go – if I go out for dinner or lunch or to a friend’s place. “The GAP is a fantastic program. The staff puts in a lot of time and effort and it needs to be important and it needs to be recognised. It’s very important that the public knows there is a life after racing.”
What skills/experience do you bring to GRV? I studied sport administration and when this job came up I jumped at it. I have also had professional coaching roles as a ski instructor and tennis. I think you need a blend of people who have a knowledge of racing and those who just enjoy the sport. This role is well suited to my skills, and when I came on as I steward I understood the races and went through the rules and learnt the regulations. Interests outside work? I have done acting for around eight years. I wanted to be an actor when I was a kid, and my mum is in the television industry. I’ve done a few advertisements such as Carlton Mid and Doritos. However now that I have a family, I am looking forward to pursuing what I went to Uni for, and building a career within GRV. I still do acting on the side, it’s important to have hobbies and a work-life balance. I’m also producing a new web series now. 17

Club Profile The Warragul Greyhound Racing Club held its first race meeting on 30 December 1935 and has been a part of the Latrobe Valley community for more than 80 years. It’s had different homes over the years and at one time held races on a short straight track before settling at Logan Park, which it shares with the Warragul Harness and Light Harness Racing Clubs and where the present track was comprehensively remodelled in 2010. As well as being one of Victoria’s leading regional greyhound racing centres, the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club is also active in the Latrobe Valley community, both economically and socially. Today, greyhound racing at the Warragul, Cranbourne, Sale and Traralgon clubs contributes over $40 million to the Gippsland economy each year, providing hundreds of local jobs and a market for local goods and services. The current Club Committee includes President Phil Pryor, Vice President Trevor Allen, Junior Vice President Gerrie Sneyders and committee members Aaron Campbell and Bob Iredale.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
WARRAGUL GREYHOUND RACING CLUB The club manager is Adrian Scott with a background in agribusiness and the Victorian Police Force. The Warragul Club also sponsors and supports local community groups through initiatives like the TAB Great Chase Community Day, where last year 11 community groups enjoyed a great day at the races, while winning prizes to support their work. The Club’s well-appointed venue is also used by community for social and business functions, such as engagement parties, weddings, conventions, seminars and exhibitions. As a major regional hub for greyhound racing, Warragul Club hosts over 100 meetings per year on distances over 400m, 460m and 680m, mostly on Tuesday and Thursday nights, along with trials on most Wednesday and Fridays. Highlights of the club’s racing calendar are the Warragul St Leger, with a $25,000 first prize and the Group 2 Warragul Cup with a $47,000 first prize, one of the four legs in the Gippsland Carnival now underway.
WGRC manager Adrian Scott said Les was a part of the fabric of greyhound racing in the area. “He has made an outstanding contribution to the efficient running of this club for many years,” Mr Scott said. Times have changed in that near 50-year stint, with Les’ first role running the ‘all clear’ from the stewards to the tote. “Forty-five years I’ve been involved at Warragul, my brother worked here too,” Les said.
End of an Era By Bridget Scott “It’s like being part of another family.” For Les Wright, that is the most fitting way he can describe his experience and involvement with greyhounds. A forty-five year contribution to one industry - nearly half a century, most recently as a judge. However, this year marked the end of that era for Les, who judged his last race at the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club (WGRC) on Tuesday September 27.
“I was 14 and three quarters; it was the age you had to be when you could first get a job.” Not to mention, he was also around in the days where the judges wrote the placings on a piece of paper with a peg and connected it to a cable for it to get down to the TAB officers. A builder by trade, Les remained involved at Warragul for the sake of doing something else that he loves, and his family know that every Tuesday night, he won’t be home. It’s part of his life and has been for a very long time. Working part-time as a judge, Les said he has met “a diverse and fantastic range of people”. Good luck to Les for whatever the future holds for him.

GAP Testing Dates NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently
Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well: • Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au • All sessions for January - March 2017 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. • To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: - have a current C5 vaccination; and - not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at greyhoundcare. grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing. • Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. • Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP.

JANUARY 2017
Greyhounds Spread Christmas Cheer By Andrew Copley The Adoption Day at The Meadows on Sunday 4 December was another successful day for the Greyhound Adoption Program, with 27 greyhounds finding new homes. The event had a Christmas theme to it with many new adopters taking up the opportunity to have a photo with Santa. “This was another fantastic Adoption Day with a really good vibe, resulting in many people bringing a new pet greyhound home in time for Christmas,” said GAP Manager, Larissa Darragh. GAP’s next Adoption Day will be in 2017 at a date to be confirmed, however people are reminded that they can adopt greyhounds almost every day of the year.
Merlino Family Adopt Second Dog
“People don’t have to wait for one of our Adoption Days to adopt a greyhound. They can give us a call and make an appointment to come and meet a number of our greyhounds available for adoption almost any day of the year,” Larissa said.
Deputy Premier James Merlino has relived the joy of owning a greyhound after his family decided to ‘fail’ fostering and adopt their new dog, Max.
By Bridget Scott
“We are based in Seymour, which is little more than an hour north of Melbourne, and we also have a Mornington Peninsula location, which is just a short drive from Eastlink.”
James, along with wife Meagan and their three children, adopted their first greyhound at the Ballarat Adoption Day in 2016, and fell in love.
To make an appointment to visit the Greyhound Adoption Program please call (03)5799 0166.
“We picked up Sara, and she just fitted in beautifully to the home, we were really surprised how placid she was with the kids – she has been gorgeous,” Ms Merlino said. “Then we were driving past Seymour when they had their adoption day and I said let’s just pop in and see if there’s any dogs left.” Little did the Merlino’s know this little visit would lead them to meeting Max, whom they initially fostered. “We drove in and one of the GAP volunteers said there were still a few dogs around,” Mr Merlino said. “To make a long story short, an hour later we left with Max. Almost immediately after he met Sara, we knew that he was a keeper.” Mr Merlino said the two greyhounds are like ‘two-peas in a pod’ and described the experience with the Greyhound Adoption Program as ‘wonderful.’ “The whole process has been fantastic, they give great advice,” he said. “The dogs themselves are also just delightful.” He said adopting greyhounds has forced their family to take some time out.
Partnership on Show In November, GAP and the RSPCA joined forces to help promote the RSPCA’s ‘Time to go Home’ campaign. With the end of year fast approaching, RSPCA were looking to get as many animals into their forever home by Christmas. GAP went along to help not only promote the GAP greyhounds that were at RSPCA’s East Burwood centre but all greyhounds. “It was a fantastic day working with the RSPCA,” said GAP Communication Advisor Rose Streatfeild. “Often greyhounds are overlooked for various reasons including size and many wrong preconceptions people have. “So, being able to have our GAP volunteers at the East Burwood facility, walking around with the greyhounds and talking to people, was a great opportunity to break down those preconceptions and hopefully even adopt a few greyhounds.”
“The dogs show us all how to relax,” he said. “They help us calm down, and have really added to the atmosphere of the home.”

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Goofy Greyhounds of Gippsland By Molly Haines. The word goofy seems to be used more often than not by people to describe their pet greyhound. Maybe they are just still learning how to use their long legs? Maffra resident Ness Noble is all too familiar with the goofy characteristics greyhounds display after just two months with the new addition to her family - a beautiful greyhound called Boombie. “Me and my son Henry just love dogs, but it wasn’t until I started following the Greyhound Adoption Program on Facebook that I found myself really wanting a greyhound at home,” Ness explained. It was very important for Ness and Henry to adopt a greyhound that would become a companion to their chocolate Labrador Strawberry.

“They are very different but both love to sleep all day. Strawberry and Boombie get along so well, they love to play with each other,” Ness said. “Boombie is cuddly and affectionate and I really can’t imagine not having a greyhound as a pet now.” An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer of 28 years, Ness said she and Henry have already claimed a best puppy in show with Boombie, as well as volunteering at the Sale show to get the word out about greyhound adoption in the local Gippsland area. “It’s so important to spread the word about how beautiful greyhounds are. I want more people to be aware of how amazing greyhounds are and not listen to the stigma attached with greyhounds because it couldn’t be further from the truth,” said Ness. Ness and Boombie will be on show at the first leg of the Gippsland Carnival to highlight the greyhound’s beautiful nature, long legs, extremely soft ears – and their goofy characteristics!
