Editor: Andrew Copley Deputy Editor: Molly Haines Greyhound Monthly Victoria (GMV) magazine is produced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), the governing body of greyhound racing in this state. GRV strongly encourages all Victorian greyhound racing participants - in particular breeders and trainers - to take the time to read each issue of GMV to ensure they are across relevant key issues. Each edition of GMV aims to provide an overview of key happenings in relation to Victorian greyhound racing that occurred during the previous month, as well as promoting significant and relevant upcoming activities and events. If you receive Greyhound Monthly Victoria via post but only read it on-line, GRV asks that you please consider the environment and notify us via email (tmaagma@grv.org. au) requesting to be removed from our mailing list. You can also request to have GMV emailed to you via the same email address. It is GRV’s goal to have each edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria available online at grv.org.au on or before the last day of the previous month, and arriving in letter boxes by the 10th day of each month.
CEO’s Update Welcome to the April edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria. Some of the highlights in this issue include Dyna Patty’s great run in the Australia Cup and Orson Allen’s back to back wins in the Horsham and Perth Cups. Also covered are details of how GRV is reallocating $450,000 from unspent prize money to provide more incentives for participants, our sixth Greyhound Community Day, this one held at Sandown, and how our clubs at Cranbourne, Warragul, Traralgon and Sale worked with their local communities to keep greyhounds and other dogs safe during the recent bushfires. GRV is very pleased with how the new Watchdog mobile form guide is performing, although it is a work in progress with more features to be released shortly. While it is the best wagering guide of its kind for greyhound racing, it’s also, as I and others are finding, a very handy overview of Victorian greyhound racing in general. Results, race changes and news about meetings and featured dogs is updated in almost real time in a very user-friendly format and I’d recommend it for all participants and followers of the sport even if they are not wagering. The Watchdog can be downloaded at the Apple and Google apps stores and the website version is available at: watchdog.grv.org.au In other racing-related matters, GRV’s Safe Racing Program covers a range of issues such as proper preparation of greyhounds but improving track safety remains its key priority. Accordingly, GRV continually monitors injury data on a track by track basis and I am really pleased to report that Geelong, Sale, Warrnambool and Warragul Clubs have all recorded significant injury rate reductions over the past few months while Horsham GRC continues as safe, driven by its recent major track upgrade. Speaking of track upgrades, work is underway on developing new track designs for the Traralgon GRC and a new track is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Finally, I’d like to remind you about the next National Greyhound Adoption Day, coming up on 28 April. Under the banner of “Make a fast friend. Adopt a Greyhound.” greyhound re-homing agencies in every Australian state will each host an adoption day as part of a nation-wide push to boost awareness of greyhounds as pets. And once again theatre star, radio host and TV personality Todd McKenney will be the National Ambassador for the Day. I encourage you to spread the world about National Adoption Day so more people will be able enjoy the company of these wonderful dogs in their retirement.

Looking ahead, GRV is now developing its strategic priorities for 2019-24 now that the reform agenda is almost complete. While we will continue with our core responsibilities of regulation (including greyhound welfare and integrity) and promotion, much of our upcoming work will now be focused on where Victorian greyhound racing should be in the next five to ten years. We will be consulting widely with participants and other stakeholders about what future they want for the code and how best to achieve this. A key stakeholder in this space is Greyhounds Australasia (GA) which, under its new Chair Anne Marie Harrison, is now developing its first ever Strategic Plan. As members of the GA Board, myself and GRV Deputy Chair Peita Duncan, are providing support for the GA Plan’s development while also ensuring GA input into a long-term vision for the sport in Victoria.
APRIL 2019
Turning now to issues off the track, it’s now less than seven months before the Victorian Government’s Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds comes into force so it’s increasingly important that all
participants are aware of its requirements. The Code comes into effect on 1 January 2020 and GRV’s support for making sure you are code-ready includes information and advice at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/code-of-practice, the Code Support Line on 1300 144 360 and the Code Support Book which GRV is releasing in monthly sections and which can be downloaded at the greyhound care website page mentioned above. I strongly encourage all participants to make use these resources if they haven’t so already. Read more on Page 24 of this publication.

After exiting box one as the $3.90 favourite, the daughter of Fernando Bale and Unix Bale hit the first turn with Black Opium before showing a superior turn of foot entering the back straight. Dyna Patty eventually scored by two lengths over Black Opium ($8.50) and Deliver ($6.20) in a scorching 29.58sec.

“I am very emotional because I was cheering so loud,” a teary Dailly said moments after Dyna Patty claimed the $250,000 first prize. She jumped beautifully and when she found the lead I thought she was a very good chance to win, but with Black Opium right behind her I was a bit worried. Luckily Dyna Patty is very strong. First run in 1958 at North Melbourne when won by Rookie Rebel, the Australian Cup is one of the most celebrated events in greyhound racing. “Leading into a big race like the Australian Cup is so exciting. You know the big day is coming up, but there were plenty of good dogs in the race like My Redeemer, so you can never get your hopes up too high,” Andrea said. The win saw Dyna Patty surpass $500,000 in career earnings having also won the Group 1 Maturity Classic, while Dailly’s previous Australian Cup winners have been Dyna Lachlan (2010), Spud Regis (2013), Dyna Double One (2016) and Hecton Bale (2018). Other feature race winners on Australian Cup night were: •
Group 1 Fanta Bale Super Stayers: Blue Moon Rising (John Finn, Cranebrook NSW)
•
Group 3 GRV Vic Bred Maiden Final (525m): Lektra Spring (Andrea Dailly, Anakie VIC)
•
Country Championship Final (525m): Crimson Vixen (Norm McCullagh, Warrnambool VIC)
•
Cup Night Middle-Distance (600m): Blue Striker (Peter Akathiotis, Reservoir VIC)
•
Australian Cup Consolation (525m): Jebrynah (Rocky Crisafi, Pakenham, VIC)
Adding a new dimension to the 2019 Australian Cup was the pairing of eight local charities to a greyhound in the final, with Brite Services snaring $10,000 courtesy of The Meadows Greyhounds Community Grants Fund for being matched to Dyna Patty. The other seven charities each received a $2000 donation.

rson Allen has enjoyed an incredible 2019 on the racetrack, and he has stepped it up another level in recent weeks. After taking out the Cranbourne Cup in February, Orson Allen took his game to a new level during March, winning the Group 2 CHS Group Horsham Cup in track record time before capturing his first Group 1 victory in the Perth Cup. Victory would see the son of KC And All – Desalle Bale snare a $50,000 country cups bonus, which GRV gives to any greyhound that can win three Victorian country cups during a calendar year.

“Warrnambool is definitely an option for Orson. He is jumping better than ever before and the $50,000 bonus is a great incentive to have a crack at another country cup,” Avalon trainer Correy Grenfell said. Orson Allen’s performance in the Horsham Cup was superb, winning in 26.76sec as the $2.20 favourite over Nervous An Weird and Italian Plastic. He lowered Got Some Wheels’ track record over the 485m distance by .006sec in the process. Victorian greyhounds were particularly prominent on Perth Cup night (23 March) at Cannington, with Hecton Bale and Dyna Patty filling the minor placings in the Cup (520m), while champion stayer Tornado Tears ($1.10Fav) overcame a mountain of interference to finish second in the Group

he Horsham Greyhound Racing Club has contributed important funds towards education in Wimmera schools around mental health and suicide prevention.
The club donated funds to Queensland-based organisation Livin every time a local greyhound won ($100) or was placed ($50) in a race at Horsham during the first nine weeks of 2019 leading into the Horsham Cup final. Gate takings at the Horsham Cup also contributed to the $4700 total, which was accepted by Livin’s Alistair Mitchell, formerly of Horsham but now based in Queensland, to go towards the LIVINwell educational program.

RV was delighted to take part in Neil’s Wheel – an event hosted by Melbourne’s 3AW host Neil Mitchell to raise money for sick children.
The first Neil’s Wheel event was held during Neil’s Morning Program last year and successfully raised $250,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Following on from that stunning success, Neil once again held a group of celebrities and organisations hostage in the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel at Docklands.
Louise Martin is interviewed by Neil Mitchell.
GRV’s General Manager Strategic Communication and Marketing, Louise Martin, was one of 20 highprofile people invited by Neil to occupy one of the pods on the wheel on 8 March, and they were only allowed down once they had sourced $10,000 worth of donations.

Victorian prize money reallocated to the tune of $450,000 By Luke Holmesby
P
rize money from cancelled race meetings over summer and race meetings featuring fewer than 12 races will be reallocated to Victorian greyhound racing participants in a variety of initiatives. Among the initiatives to take place in the remainder of the 2018/19 financial year are: • Greyhounds that run unplaced at all level 3 meetings from April 1 to June 30 will receive $50.

• GRV Vic Bred Maiden series events from March 5 onwards will now pay $100 prize money for unplaced greyhounds (in both Heats and Finals) until the end of the current racing season on June 30. This $100 unplaced prize money will also apply to the three rounds of the Gold Rush Maiden series conducted at Bendigo GRA in April 2019. • An additional set of Country Heats to a City Final have
been added to all provincial clubs during March and April. The finals will be conducted at Sandown (SAP) and Meadows (MEP) for level 1 prize money. GRV’s General Manager Racing Vaughn Lynch said the redistribution of the prize money equates to $450,000 and would be an incentive for Victorian participants. “The aim of reallocating this prize money is to stimulate the racing population in Victoria by increasing the utilisation rate and increasing total nominations at race meetings in Victoria,” Mr Lynch said. “There has never been a better time to race a greyhound in Victoria. GRV is providing opportunities for greyhounds of all levels of ability to reward the terrific work of industry participants. “GRV is committed to ensuring a strong and sustainable greyhound racing program in Victoria and this is just one example of that commitment.”
Sunshine North man warned off over animal welfare concerns RV has warned off Denis Lyons of Sunshine North, under Greyhounds Australasia Rule 95 (1) following an investigation by the Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit (GRIU).
G
“As a result of this disgraceful behaviour, greyhounds have been unnecessarily euthanised,” Mr Gillard said. “Lyons also falsely told registered participants that his business was approved by GRV which it is not.
GRIU General Manager Shane Gillard said the investigation found Lyons, who was not a registered participant with GRV, offered to rehome greyhounds for a fee of $200 and then failed to do so.
“Having been warned off, Lyons can no longer have any involvement with the greyhound racing industry. Registered participants need to be aware of this.”
Mr Gillard said Lyons made no effort to rehome greyhounds and in fact had dumped them at council pounds and lost dogs’ homes.
Mr Gillard said the GRIU investigation was ongoing and anyone with information should contact soconnell@grv.org. au or call the Racing Integrity Hotline: 1300 227 225.

with a handful of other hopeful greyhounds. “She’s doing really well for us at the moment. I couldn’t ask any more of her,” Galea said. “She is a little gem and easy to train with a great temperament.” While she might best fit the description of ‘hobby trainer’, Galea is no Jenny come lately to the sport, which has become something of a family business.
Angela’s time to shine By Luke Holmesby
A
ngela Galea doesn’t fit the profile of the typical greyhound trainer, but then again is there any such thing?
Living in the inner west of Melbourne with a part-time job at a warehousing company and a couple of dogs to feed, Angela is living the suburban dream shared by millions across the country.
Her father Martin introduced her to greyhound racing and still actively helps train her pack. “It‘s our common interest,” she said. “We are all about the dogs. I was born into the greyhounds so the dogs mean everything to me. I got my handlers license when I was 16 and haven’t looked back. I’ve been involved in owning, breeding and training.” Time To Talk has plenty of potential and Galea admits she has an eye on the Group 2 Warrnambool Cup (450m), heats of which will be run on 24 April with the final on 1 May. But true to humble form, Galea isn’t looking too far ahead.
Except one of her dogs happens to be one of greyhound racing’s most exciting up and comers.
“She has only just turned two years old so we’re taking it as it comes. She is a little young to push too far for the bigger races at city level but she is running so well at the moment.”
Time To Talk has generated plenty of talk in the greyhound racing world after winning 11 of her first 18 races including the Shepparton Matchmaker Final (450m) on 9 March, scooping up $10,000 first prize money and a $1000 VicGreys bonus in the process.
Angela bred, owned and trained Time To Talk (Magic Sprite – Fainting Fancies) as well as her full older sister It’s All Talk, a winner of 32 races from 55 starts before retiring to the breeding barn a little over 12 months ago.
That sort of record is usually associated with the bigger name trainers based on sprawling rural properties, but Time To Talk is humbly based in Angela’s Sunshine North residential property
The other feature at Shepparton on 9 March was the $10,000 to-the-winner Shepparton Classic (450m), in which Anthony Azzopardi trained the quinella with Fernando Bale – Ready To Riot littermates Whiskey Riot and Fernando’s Riot.

Josh, of Broadford, enjoyed an involvement in greyhound racing as a breeder, rearer, owner and pretrainer, while his partner Brooke is the daughter of Shepparton GRC VicePresident, Tony Schultz. “Josh’s passing has really hit people at our club as he was one of the nicest young blokes you could meet - always saying hello and giving you a smile,”
said Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club Manager, Carl McGrath. “He was a real grassroots greyhound person who just loved being around greyhounds…from pups to racing dogs to pets. To sum up Josh is simple - if you knew him you liked him, you couldn’t not. scheduled for Warragul that weekend. Joining Simone Fisher on her Saturday morning RSN program Talking Greyhounds, Donna said the response to her social media post was ‘extraordinary’ and not what she expected.
That’s the position Warragul GRC Manager, Adrian Scott found himself in over the weekend of 2-3 March as Gippsland was hit by bushfires, some of them dangerously close to Adrian’s home town of Nar Nar Goon.
“We’re a community, both of greyhound people and local residents, and that’s what communities are all about.”
When it became clear just before the weekend that the bushfires posed an imminent threat to the properties of local greyhound racing participants, Adrian started ringing around to let them know the Club’s kennels were open for anyone who needed them, and the local news also helped spread the word.
Further complicating matters, the bushfires were also moving towards Adrian’s home in Nar Nar Goon. “I had to do a lot of rushing around that weekend and the only way to get through it was just by trying to keep a cool head and doing what needed to be done when it needed to be.”
By the end of the weekend, Warragul GRC had sheltered 65 racing greyhounds, one GAP greyhound and a kelpie while the Warragul Harness Racing Club next door billeted 25 horses from fire-threatened stables. Adrian, a club staff member and the trainers of the sheltered dogs all worked together over the weekend to keep the Club’s many four-footed guests fed, watered, calm and clean, a job made easier by the fact no race meetings were
Fortunately, all the dogs and Adrian’s home came through untouched but it’s not a weekend he’d like to repeat in a hurry. “Ultimately though, you do what you have to and the club staff and the local trainers all pitched in and worked together with great spirit. When it comes down to it, we’re a community, both of greyhound people and local residents, and that’s what communities are all about, looking after each other.”
Horses seek refuge in greyhound runs after Facebook post By Phil Weir
T
he generosity of others, in times of trouble, is a constant source of inspiration; brilliantly illustrated in early March when disastrous fires razed 31 houses and 67 outbuildings in the Bunyip region of Gippsland. More than 10,000 hectares of land were affected; much of it paddock and forest and home to countless livestock. One former greyhound breeder saw the opportunity to utilise her property for the benefit of horses in the affected area. Donna Sadler, who in past times bred up to 80 greyhound litters, was in Pakenham when she heard about the fires and quickly took to Facebook to offer her property in Nar Nar Goon – including the greyhound runs – to horses in need of shelter. Joining Simone Fisher on her Saturday morning RSN program Talking Greyhounds, Donna said the response
to her social media post was far greater than expected and nothing short of ‘extraordinary.’. “All through the Friday night and Saturday the horses were coming in, many without even head-collars or lead ropes because a lot of equipment has gone up in the fires. In all, we had 84 horses in the paddocks and dogs runs.” “Amazingly they were all well-behaved. We hardly knew they were there overnight.” Donna saw her own generous gesture returned from locals, when donations of feed and horse handling gear started to arrive as regularly as the horse floats. “The community spirit was amazing. We had all the bits and pieces we needed, plenty of feed and people to help. Everyone just stayed focussed and calm and got on with it.” Most of the horses have returned to their homes now, but some owners are still dealing with fence and feed losses.

“A big shout out must go to our club managers who have been at their clubs 24/7, along with their employees.”
All four clubs in the region – Cranbourne, Warragul Traralgon and Sale – opened their doors and kennels across what was a frightening weekend at the beginning of March.
GRV Board Member Rob Greenall visited the Gippsland region across the weekend to roll up his sleeves for the cause.
“Greyhound racing people are a community and they look after each other,” Louise told ABC Radio. “A big shout out must go to our club managers who have been at their clubs 24/7, along with their employees.” The four clubs collectively housed several hundred greyhounds and other dog breeds in their airconditioned kennel blocks.
“I’m only five minutes from the track so it was easy for me to get there,” Inger said. Sale GRC Manager Peter Johnston said it was wonderful to be able to help his local community during their time of need. “We have had an average of 10-12 dogs basically living in the kennel block here for a few weeks because people’s properties were under the threat of fire and were concerned about the safety of their dogs,” Johnston said. Marg Thomas, an avid Richmond supporter, with one of her idols Matthew Richardson at the Warragul Cup Calcutta in January.
Looking back to when she first started racing greyhounds, Marg said that while most people were pretty supportive about a young woman getting involved in the sport, there were some men who though it a bit strange. “They’d be at the track, watching the men handling the greyhounds and perhaps not realising all the work behind the scenes being done by the women, looking after and training dogs, getting them race ready and really acting as a backstop for the men. But generally, most people were pretty good sports, especially if it was for the good of the sport,” Marg said.
“It’s one sport when men and women can compete equally, whether as owners, breeders or trainers.”

Over the past 50 years, Marg has been a passionate and very involved member of Victoria’s greyhound community. Starting as an owner and trainer, she won the Silver Chief in 1975 along with some other big races and continues today to breed, train and race greyhounds from her Menniyan property. Marg also served on the committee of the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club for a decade, including as President for six years and Vice-President for three, helping steer the club through some major challenges to place it on a strong basis for the future. She also found the time over the past 35 years to make hundreds of presentation rugs for feature race winners and her dog Dalkeith was the inspiration for the 2002 film of the same name about a retirement home that adopts a racing greyhound. Among the women trainers of the time that inspired and helped Marg was Pat Haas, the first Victorian woman to obtain a public greyhound trainer’s licence and who led the push in 1971 to overturn the ban on women handling greyhounds the track. As an club administrator, Marg was also close to fellow Hall of Fame Inductee, Marg Long, who managed the Traralgon and Geelong Greyhound Clubs before going on lead the establishment of The Meadows where she is general manager. “There weren’t really any issues with Traralgon having me as its first female President. It’s a very family-oriented club and everyone knew each other well and we were all really focused on keeping the club going during some very big changes in the code,” Marg said. Asked about what different capabilities and focus men and women brought to greyhound racing, Marg said that for her, the breeding and training aspect was particularly special. “I really enjoy working with greyhounds from when they’re born all the way through to getting them ready to race .I sometimes get a bit of tear of in my eye when I see a dog I’ve raised from a puppy going out onto the track for its first race.” And what advice does Marg have for women looking to get into greyhound racing? “Well it’s one sport when men and women can compete equally, whether as owners, breeders or trainers. I think ultimately for anyone regardless of gender, it’s about being fair and honest and just giving it your best. Then you’ll find out just what a rewarding sport it can be.”

for the kids and stalls selling rugs, collars and other merchandise for canines. GRV’s CEO Alan Clayton took the opportunity to thank the greyhound adoption community for opening their homes and their hearts to a greyhound, and for helping spread the message about what wonderful pets they make. “There has never been a better time to bring a greyhound into your life as now all pet greyhounds in Victoria don’t need a muzzle in public, whether they have a green GAP collar or not,” Mr Clayton said.
Greyhound lovers flock to community day
“This is a day to thank all the adopters, volunteers and foster carers who do so much to help retired greyhounds find their new homes. “As anyone who has a greyhound can tell you, they take retirement – the opportunity to put their feet up on the sofa – very seriously indeed. But they can’t do this without the hard work of the many volunteers and foster carers who work with GAP and other re-homing agencies.”

G
RV is working alongside University of Melbourne with a series of studies set to explore diet and fertility.
The diet study will allow greyhound and sporting dog owners and trainers to have their diets examined for its adequacy or any deficiencies or excesses.
We are looking for industry participants to be involved in the studies in which students are researching the best possible diet for greyhounds and to recommend safe and evidence-based treatment protocols for the control of oestrus in the racing greyhound female.
The objective of the fertility research is to determine the age at which female greyhounds have the onset of their first oestrus (comes in season), and the subsequent length of time between each oestrus.
Study one is looking into the different diets that greyhounds are fed at all stages of their life. The nutrient requirements of greyhounds and sporting dogs vary during their life cycle and this study will aim to assess the suitability of the diet to ensure that all the required nutrients are supplied.
If you would like to be involved in either study please contact any of the below.
Students plan to examine what owners and trainers currently feed their dogs and then compare this to the known nutrient requirements for greyhounds and sporting dogs. The study will look at the diets of both racing and retired greyhounds.

News By Lynton Hogan President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.
Over the last few months, GOTBA Victoria has continued to progress members issues on a variety of different matters, for you, the participant: from prizemoney to other racing issues (including grading), to advancing and amplifying the participant voice in the running of the sport.
by prizemoney or grading re-allocation and other means (even if temporary), to get (safely) the maximum number of our existing greyhound population to the track. And to keep them there. Even if the details of actions taken sometimes need tweaking.
We strive to hear from, to understand the issues of, and to support all levels and types of participants – we will never represent the interests solely of a narrow group, large or small. As an organisation, we will always attempt to take the position on any given issue that represents the greatest benefit to the sport overall and the people (and greyhounds) in it.
Participants should themselves also think about what this means and the opportunities that arise, this year in particular, but even thereafter. Can the young greyhound that chases (a pre-requisite…) but that you may not otherwise train past pretraining (or may not even put in pre-training after education) now win races that it could not if it raced in 2015-18? Can you plan to extend out your 3.5 year old’s career? Is it now more viable for that moderately performed greyhound in your kennel out for a minimum of 3 months with injury to be retained for racing rather than prepared for rehoming?
Maximising our racing population: what participants can do
As must be obvious to participants, we are in the midst right now of a relative shortage of available racing animals. This will continue in at least the short term (2019). While GOTBA Vic probably departs with GRV on the reasons why this has occurred, on recovery from it and on actions necessary to prevent it occurring again, we are aligned with GRV on doing something about it. We have been pushing action for some time: GOTBA Vic, for example, insisted on breeder bonuses forming part of the 2018 prizemoney increase proposals to support breeding. Maximising prizemoney remains a key issue. In the immediate, though, GOTBA Vic supports further moves,

Thinking through and acting on these things now with the upcoming 2019 racing picture in mind is not only a potential benefit to you, it will almost certainly be a benefit to the sport. GOTBA Vic Supanite – 24 April 2019 – Sandown GRC On Wednesday 24 April 2019, at the Sandown GRC night meeting, GOTBA Vic will hold its annual Supanite. It’s a great night of racing and attending GOTBA members are included in a draw for a chance to win $1,000. Races on the night will include the Abba Kennels GOTBA Cup (Grade 5 515 Final (Vic Bred Only)(No City Wins)(VICGREYS), heats the Thursday prior), the GOTBA Damsels Dash (Grade 5 Bitches), and GOTBA Plate Restricted Win 515 (1-2 Wins)(No City Wins). Connections of placegetters in the Damsels Dash will have the choice of straws from several high-profile stud dogs.

My Redeemer ready for stud duties By Gerard Guthrie
D
ave Geall is optimistic the extremely difficult decision to retire 2018 Melbourne Cup hero My Redeemer at the peak of his powers will prove to be the right call.
The winner of 25 of his 51 starts and $681,805 in prizemoney, My Redeemer contested the Australian Cup Final and Temlee invitational during the recent Australian Cup Carnival, but will embark on a stud career still one month shy of his third birthday. “It was a hard decision, mainly because he was going so well, but we did have quite a significant amount of interest from breeders and owners enquiring about straws,” My Redeemer’s trainer/breeder Dave Geall told RSN’s Off The Leash.
“But even though we would rather him racing, with the enormous interest we had we felt that what happens is we lose these people if we keep racing the dog. We estimated that we could lose 240 pups on the ground if we didn’t do what we did.”
My Redeemer claimed the first of his two Group 1 trophies when winning the Harrison-Dawson last May and he returned to Sandown Park in November to land the world’s richest greyhound race, the TAB Melbourne Cup. “It was a bit of a numb feeling – surreal – when he won the Melbourne Cup,” Geall said. “It is no doubt the biggest race in the world and as time goes on and you keep watching replays over and over it still sends a tingle down the spine after watching it a hundred times. “I think what made it even more special is coming off the back
Geall has plenty of reasons to be confident about My Redeemer’s stud prospects and he’s provided a tip to breeders with Premier Fantasy matrons that it is a proven cross - with Premier Fantasy being the sire of My Redeemer’s older halfsister Up Hill Jill, winner of the Group 1 Topgun, Group 1 Golden Easter Egg and Group 2 Sandown Laurels, as well as finishing second in another four Group 1s. “Being a Fernando Bale son gives us a lot of confidence,” Geall said. “My Redeemer is obviously a very fast dog, he’s very strong and he’s got the temperament. He’s just a beautiful dog – he’s like a pet – but when he gets to the track and he knows it’s race day and he just changes. He’s just a different dog and he gets that white line fever. “Being by Fernando Bale and also with Brett Lee in him it just opens the door wide open to a number of different lines, including Bombastic Shiraz matrons. With all these factors we do believe it’s looking exciting.”
My Redeemer has early speed, strength and a fierce will to win.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Bred in the purple, My Redeemer is a son of the champion sprinter/sire Fernando Bale and Geall’s grand producer Where’s Demonica, a daughter of another super sire in Brett Lee’s son Where’s Pedro, and also the dam of dual Group 1 winner Up Hill Jill.
“We estimated that we could lose 240 pups on the ground if we didn’t do what we did.”

“I am a trainer first and foremost and I’ll always be that way. Like all trainers, I love being in Group 1s and Group races and we’re going to miss it, for a while at least, because we know that every time he steps out in a Group 1 series he’s going to be competitive and capable of winning another one or two in the future, so it was hard.
of winning the Golden Easter Egg in the same year with Up Hill Jill, his half-sister. You do think about it quite often how fortunate we are to win these two races the same year and get two dogs of that calibre.”

Old dogs to learn new tricks By Andrew Copley
T
he 2019 Victorian coursing calendar has been released with a Catch on the Coursing meeting scheduled to kick off the season on Sunday 7 April at Longwood. Buoyed by a 15 per cent increase in nominations last season, National Coursing Association President Peter Craig is eagerly awaiting the season ahead, which will include an increased number of veteran races scheduled. “We will look at holding Veterans races at each meeting if entries permit as many trainers have mentioned requiring an avenue for their older chasers that may have lost a little desire,” Craig said.

rather than 10am. This will also mean that trainers will be required to present papers earlier, by 9am, also bring coursing into line with the track where kennels close 30 minutes before the first race.”
Another important change to take place in 2019 will be an earlier start time across the board.

“We also look at holding Veterans races at each meeting if entries permit as many trainers have mentioned requiring an avenue for their older chasers that may have lost a little desire.” “In recent years coursing meetings have extended from 10 to 12 events on the program similar to the track meetings. This translates to an extra 14 courses on the day,” Craig said. “Given the limited daylight hours in the winter months we course our greyhounds, there have been a few occasions in recent years where hold-ups in the program have resulted in some late finishes in poorer light conditions.” “To assist with this issue, the 2019 season with conduct the first course at each meeting 30 minutes earlier, at 9.30am

“At the Catch on to Coursing meetings the greyhounds only compete twice in the day, heats and finals as opposed to the heats, semis and final of normal coursing meetings. It also allows trainers to assess how well their greyhounds cope with more than one run in the day, and those trainers with dogs defeated in the heats may nominate for a consolation final if they wish,” Craig said.

What’s ahead in 2019? By Andrew Copley
W
ith the new coursing season almost upon us, NCA President Peter Craig provides a snapshot of the calendar highlights and gives an insight into the types of greyhounds and trainers best suited to coursing. Q. What are the main highlights of the 2019 coursing calendar? PC: The highlight of the 2019 season will no doubt be the Waterloo Cup to be staged at Longwood over the August 24/25 weekend. Our Age Classics, the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship at Lang Lang in June and the Derby and Oaks at Benalla in July are sure to unearth a future coursing star. Whilst a recent innovation, the Slips to Boxes events at Longwood to Shepparton and Lang Lang to Cranbourne have become very sought-after trophies for trainers of track dogs looking for a bit of spark in the dogs racing. Q. Does the 2019 coursing calendar differ in any significant way from previous years? PC: The 2019 calendar is similar to the successful 2018 calendar but we have granted the Benalla Club the Derby and Oaks classics for the first time in many years given the rave reviews their quality track has received. Once again we race for Tier 3 prizemoney for our normal events and start the season with the Benalla and Lang Lang meetings with preference to those greyhounds that are coursing maidens.
PC: For trainers, coursing will remind them why they fell in love with greyhound racing. From the way their charges fire up from the slips and regain their zest for racing, to the
Q. Does coursing suit a particular type of greyhound? PC: All greyhounds will benefit from a day of coursing. The start from slips is a very natural start for dogs as they take off after the lure as soon as it moves. With only one competitor per course, there is a great deal less interference, so confidence is gained and that benefits all. Female greyhounds especially benefit with many events restricted by sex. And many trainers find that two or three runs in a day can bring their greyhound’s level of fitness to a higher standard. The coursing greyhound comes in all shapes and sizes but the champion courser is one that has exceptional speed (as opposed to great reflexes at boxrise) as the start from slips is while the dogs are in motion. This greyhound must be able to rest between courses and come out and do it all again a few hours later. This is the greyhound we all would like to take to Longwood in August!
Q. Does coursing suit a particular type of trainer? PC: Coursing suits a trainer that loves spending the day with his dogs and his friends. The coursing day can be a long one and is a busy one between the warm ups and cool downs, and that’s only the barbeque and esky!!

camaraderie with fellow trainers and the assistance everyone is willing to give. For newer trainers, coursing will introduce them to new skills of massage and feeding between courses, something foreign to the track racing scene, and improve their understanding of their greyhounds’ requirements. The involvement of family and friends helps make the day of coursing a special one.

Barcia Bale will stay on as a pet with studmaster Paul Westerveld (pictured) and family despite retiring from stud.
Dee Bee, Raw Ability, Mepunga Blazer, Barooga Brett, Fast Times, Mystic Riot, Nervous An Weird, Barcali, Beast Unleashed and Miss Splendamiro to name a few. Michelle Westerveld said it has been an ‘absolute honour’ that she and husband Paul have had the opportunity to stand Barcia Bale at stud. “He’s nine years old and he has been a very busy stud boy having served 1200 females, so we just decided it was the right time to retire him,” Michelle told Simone Fisher on RSN’s Talking Greyhounds. Interestingly, the demand for Barcia Bale’s services has ramped up since the announcement of his retirement from stud duties. “He has been in huge demand. Since advertising that he has retired I’ve been inundated with requests and for the last two quarters he has sold out,” Michelle said.
Barcia Bale retires from stud but no need for despair
The Westervelds have plenty of experience managing in-demand sires, as they also stand once-in-a-generation stud dog, Fernando Bale.

C
hampion sire Barcia Bale was retired from stud duties last month, but the good news for breeders is that a limited supply of semen has been collected from him which will last another two years or more, demand pending. Barcia Bale is of Australia’s greatest stud dogs of the past decade, with his progeny including Dyna Double One, Aston
“We’ve decided to manage him (Barcia Bale) the way we manage Fernando Bale. We are allowed to sell up to 54 vials (of semen) per quarter for each sire through Greyhounds Australasia Rules. So we’ve been prioritising females that are on season, and whatever vials haven’t been sold we allocate to a waiting list.” Barcia Bale, a son of Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale, had 14 starts for 13 wins including the 2012 Group 1 Maturity Classic at The Meadows. More info at meticulouslodge.com at Flemington and Moonee Valley. And not just horses either as he’d call races for all three codes while catching them on TV.

Not surprisingly Luke started calling races professionally at the age of 18 and, after only three months on the job, took the mike and binoculars for his first Group 2 race, the 2019 CHS Group Horsham Cup on 9 March. Speaking with Simone Fisher on RSN’s Talking Greyhounds, Luke said calling greyhound racing made him much better at calling other codes.

y the time he turned twelve, Luke Humphreys decided he wanted to be a race caller and began practicing wherever he could. Growing up in a harness racing family, he started trying to call races from the grandstand at Melton race track and then from unused commentary boxes
Asked which race callers inspired him, Luke nominated Dan Mielicki for harness racing and Paul Ambrosoli for greyhounds, saying he’d try to take something from each of them and other callers to make his own style. Judging by Luke’s spine-tingling call of the Horsham Cup, he’s set for a long career behind the mike that could inspire other callers down the track.
APRIL 2019
“I love calling the dogs. It’s very different to horses and they are so quick. It’s fun and unpredictable, like when they go into the turn, you don’t know what’s going to happen and you have to work out in a split second what information is relevant,” Luke said.

Eye Got It wins the inaugural Murray Bridge Cup in comfortable fashion.
Eye Got It creates history in SA By Molly Haines
V
ictorian sprinter Eye Got It claimed the very first Murray Bridge Cup (455m) on 17 March, enhancing his phenomenal career record to 21 wins from just 26
starts. One of four Victorians in the $15,000 to-the-winner final, Eye Got It jumped from box five as the $1.90 favourite and claimed his sixth feature race win.
“He is the ultimate professional,” Cranbourne South breeder/ trainer Andrew Paraskevas said. “Eye Got It is the type of dog who races better fresh. The nine-day break in between the heat and final of the Murray
Bridge Cup was ideal for him.” Bred in Victoria by the Sparkle And Fade Syndicate, Eye Got It is a member of the outstanding Barcia Bale - Father Of Mine litter. The mating is no stranger to feature race success in South Australia, with My American Girl and Nervous An Weird winning the 2018 SA Derby and Oaks at Angle Park in September. Lara trainer Jessica Sharp had two Murray Bridge Cup finalists – Penny Worth (third) and Crook Me Kindly (eighth) – while the fastest heat winner, Aston Valetta finished fourth in the final for Ben Divirgilio.

reyhound Racing SA CEO Matt Corby is delighted with support shown by Victorian trainers for his state’s newest track, based an hour south-east of Adelaide at Murray Bridge. “We thought it (Murray Bridge) would appeal to a number of Victorians and sure enough recently in the Murray Bridge Cup final we had half the field comprising of Victorian entries. That’s great, and we encourage that,” Corby told Simone Fisher on RSN’s Talking Greyhounds. “We don’t necessarily think that the borders should be where the racing stops across South Australia and Victoria in particular. We really appreciate the efforts people have gone to

Testing Dates Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: •
•
have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at:
greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.
Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.
APRIL 2019
*NEW GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS
The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

GRV asks participants to be aware that session dates and times are subject to change in hot weather. The GRV Hot Weather Policy is now being applied to GAP Pre-Entry Assessment dates. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

Welfare Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare
Inactive Greyhound Follow-up: Incomplete Transfers During February 2019, some greyhound owners received emails and registered letters asking them to notify GRV of the activity status and location of one or more of their greyhounds that are deemed to be inactive on FastTrack. The responses from owners have been greatly appreciated, allowing us to update greyhound records on FastTrack. Throughout this process, however, it has become evident that some greyhound owners are raising ‘ownership transfer keys’ on FastTrack or completing interstate ownership transfer forms, but the new owner fails to finalise the transfer with the relevant Controlling Body. GRV would like to take this opportunity to remind those who take ownership of a greyhound, that they are required to notify GRV within 14 days in accordance with the rules of
racing. In addition, it is recommended that the greyhound does not leave your property until the transfer is complete and the greyhound no longer appears in your FastTrack account. If you have attempted to transfer ownership of one of your greyhounds, please check your MyDogs tab on FastTrack and advise GRV if there are any issues. It is also worth reminding owners that greyhounds being retired as a pet to another person (whether they are a registered participant or not) must be retired on FastTrack as such. Transfer of ownership via transfer keys is not the correct process because that does not retire the greyhound. If you need any help, please contact GRV.
Kennel cough prevention
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news
The state-wide Kennel Cough outbreak in 2017 highlighted how a more serious outbreak would threaten the racing program by depleting the availability of racing dogs. Kennel Cough could prevent a greyhound from racing for several weeks, and as affected dogs can also be infectious for weeks after they recover from symptoms, outbreaks have the potential to keep ‘smouldering’ for long periods of time.
24
As we are approaching the colder months, now is the time to start vaccinating your greyhounds against Kennel Cough. Vaccination, while not always 100% effective, is your best protection, by significantly reducing the chances of an outbreak, and reducing the severity of symptoms of affected dogs. The Kennel Cough vaccine makes up two parts of what is termed the “C5 vaccination”. The other three components (termed a C3) are Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis. Vaccination against Kennel Cough can be given at the same time as a C3 or as a separate vaccine, and can be given by intra-nasal, oral or injectable routes. While Kennel Cough vaccination is currently only mandatory for the 2nd puppy vaccination, and the naming vaccination, it is advisable to give Kennel Cough boosters every 6-12 months for life to ensure ongoing immunity. In comparison, C3 vaccinations
can be boosted just every 1-3 years in adult dogs (i.e. after the naming vaccination). GRV therefore recommends for racing greyhounds (in addition to the mandatory puppy and naming vaccinations): • C3 vaccination every 1-3 years; and • Kennel Cough vaccination (ideally intra-nasal or oral) every 6-12 months, preferably at this time of the year. However, if you want to book your greyhound into GAP you will need to check the GAP vaccination requirements (introduced on 1 March 2018 to better protect against Kennel Cough). Please see the notes on Page 23 of this edition or contact GRV or your veterinarian if would like more information. The new greyhound Code of Practice, commencing on 1 January 2020, will make it mandatory to keep your greyhounds’ vaccinations ‘current’, and this will include an annual Kennel Cough vaccination. In other words, GRV’s current vaccination recommendation will be mandatory under the Code. As such, GRV encourages participants to get into the practice now of vaccinating their greyhounds beyond the naming vaccination, particularly for Kennel Cough every year.
New Workshops in 2019 Following the success of our first participant workshops, the Greyhound Injury and Illness Management workshops delivered by Dr Chris Boemo, GRV is currently planning further workshops on an exciting range of topics. Participants have told us that greyhound nutrition and successful rehoming are important to them. As a result, we are excited to announce that from April, a limited number of workshops on Maximising Re-homing Success will be delivered at a number of clubs by the GAP’s Senior Behaviourist, Diana Rayment. These practical workshops will provide a great opportunity for participants to better understand greyhound behaviour, and grow their skills and knowledge about maximising re-homing success. GRV is also very pleased to announce, commencing in May, that Dr Ray Ferguson, a renowned greyhound veterinarian will be delivering a new workshop series, ‘Nutrition for Success’ around the state. These workshops discuss optimal nutrition for greyhounds throughout their lifecycle; providing invaluable information on both the benefits of good nutrition, as well the impact of poor nutrition on growth, development,
learning and racing success. Participants will walk away with information that they can apply to the greyhounds in their care. The following dates and locations for these workshops have been identified: Location

Each state will hold their own greyhound adoption event on the day at multiple facilities across the country which will allow people to find out more about the breed, learn about greyhound care, foster care opportunities and the chance to find the perfect pooch to join their family.
Todd McKenney has signed up as GAP’s National Ambassador.
McKenney was also the face of the first National Adoption Day, flying from his Sydney home to attend the Melbourne arm of the event at The Meadows. “I loved being involved with the National Adoption Day last year. I went to the Melbourne one and was blown away by the amount of people…they were queued out the door. It was such a heartfelt day and it was great to see these beautiful dogs start their lives as family pets.”

Participant Learning and Support Survey The survey is open until the end of April and can be completed at: https://www.research.net/r/ GRVParticipantLearningandSupportSurvey
Responses to the Participant Learning and Support Survey will help GRV focus delivery of learning and support materials in the most effective ways for participants. While it is voluntary and anonymous, the more people who take part in the survey, the better able GRV will be to keep all participants well informed about non-racing matters.

Racing Report By Vaughn Lynch General Manager, Racing
Early evidence suggest restructure is working With the updated meeting structure now in full swing it appears to have spread the total number of nominations received at each meeting to approximately 90-110 nominations across the 23 race meetings instead of having an excess of nominations at level 3 meetings. Without these changes a number of provincial level 2 meetings would have been conducted with far less than 12 races in recent weeks.
Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news
Although only a couple of weeks into the revised schedule the APM race meetings at level 3 have provided more opportunity for greyhounds to gain a regular start. GRV aims to increase the number of greyhounds getting to the track with increased opportunities at the bottom end. Greyhounds currently just above the $2,500 limit are also racing similar opposition, just now at level 2 meetings. A handful of handy young greyhounds have featured at level 3 meetings in grade 6 and 7 races but move onto the level 2 meetings very quickly. Overall, we are seeing very competitive betting races at level 3 meetings. The APM limit at each track is continually being monitored based on the demand at individual tracks. At the time of print the following tracks have a current APM Limit of $2,000 – Ballarat, Shepparton and Warragul. The following tracks have a current APM limit of $2,500 – Bendigo, Cranbourne, Geelong and Healesville. With the recent announcement
of unplaced prizemoney at level 3 meetings for the remainder of the financial year, GRV expects nominations for these APM meetings to remain strong. Racing Reference Group The Racing Reference Group currently have a vacancy for a hobby trainer that regularly races at provincial and level 3 race meetings to join the group. The RRG meet on a quarterly schedule and are the first point of consultation for racing related ideas and issues. Please contact me via email (vlynch@grv.org.au) if you are interested in applying to be part of this critically-important group.
for all full stakes metropolitan race meetings including all finals. Traralgon Update Design and scoping work is underway at Traralgon with a unique track design being considered. Upon completion of the scoping the GRV Board will consider the project prior to the next stage. This process is scheduled to occur at the April Board Meeting.
Sandown Sunday (SAP) lure - 1.2 metres from the rail.
Lure trials at Sandown and The Meadows GRV’s Racing Department has been trialling a number of variations of lures at trial sessions at Sandown and The Meadows. Variations included a second lure, a lure closer to the running rail and closer to the ground with the main aim to stimulate greyhounds’ chase instincts. A number of greyhounds have trialled behind these different lures with positive feedback from trainers involved. A three-month trial of these different lures is being planned at Sandown (SAP meetings) commencing on 7 April and The Meadows (MEP meetings) commencing on 10 April. All races at these meetings will be conducted behind the trial lures. The current hoop lure will continue to be used
The Meadows Wednesday (MEP) meetings will trial a double lure.
