W

hile there are always greyhound race meetings happening around Victoria, June is usually one of our less busy months. And it’s also the start of winter when dogs are particularly susceptible to Kennel Cough, an infection caused by several upper respiratory viruses and bacteria which can last for several weeks. Victoria is currently experiencing outbreaks of this highly contagious disease in dogs, and participants need to be alert for its symptoms which include runny noses, sneezing and dry, hacking coughs. Infected dogs can continue to spread the disease for up to three months after their symptoms have resolved so they must be immediately scratched or withdrawn from racing, trialling and GAP Pre-entry Assessments and isolated. Trainers and owners should then to speak with their veterinarian about treatment, quarantine and vaccination options for that greyhound and any other dogs on their property. And if participants haven’t already vaccinated all their dogs against Kennel Cough, they should really consider doing it now, and preferably with the intra-nasal vaccine which provides faster protection. For more information, go to: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/faqs/kennel-cough On the subject of greyhound welfare, it’s now seven months until the new Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds becomes operational and this month GRV is releasing another chapter of its Code Support Book to help participants transition to compliance. This and other chapters, along with other information and advice, can be found at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/code-ofpractice and you can call GRV’s Code Support Line on 1300 144 360 if you have specific questions that aren’t covered in the Support Book.

Looking ahead, GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) is holding another Adoption Day on Saturday 22 June which will be hosted by Sandown Park Greyhound Racing Club and I encourage you to spread the word to anyone looking to bring a greyhound into their life. On this note, I warmly congratulate Michelle Fisher and all the team at GAP’s Baxter kennels on the Mornington Peninsula for now having found forever homes for 700 retired greyhounds since the facility opened. And in closing and speaking of GAP, I’d like to note the GAP Café at 477 King St, West Melbourne is under new management. Opened in March last year, the dog-friendly café is regularly visited by GAP greyhounds and welcomes many other dogs with doggie treats and a sheltered patio well stocked with dog cushions. It now offers an expanded breakfast, lunch and snacks menu and excellent coffee from 8am to 3pm and. I strongly recommend you stop by when you’re in the neighborhood, particularly if you’re visiting GRV’s head office just over the road in Chetwynd St, and feel free to bring your greyhounds with you for a puppychino.

‘Origin-al’ path to Adelaide Cup part of exciting new cross-state initiatives By Gerard Guthrie

V

ictorian and South Australian-based trainers will have a new direct path to the Group 1 Adelaide Cup Final under exciting new cross-state initiatives being introduced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) and Greyhound Racing South Australia (GRSA). The industry-first initiatives include the winner of GRSA’s State of Origin series, to be held at Angle Park on 26 September, being guaranteed a berth in the $75,000 to-thewinner Adelaide Cup Final on 11 October. The State of Origin series is run along similar lines to Sandown’s Speed Star, with four Vic-trained greyhounds clashing with four locals under match race conditions. The format sees the GRSA grader select the best four nominated greyhounds from each state and rank them from 1 to 4, with 1 being the highest rank. The head-to-head match races will pit the two number 1 sprinters from each state against each other, followed by 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3 and 4 vs 4, with the overall winning greyhound earning $7500.

The State of Origin series was introduced in 2018 and is sure to create even greater interest among Victorian trainers in its second year with the inclusion of the massive carrot of bypassing the Adelaide Cup heats.

A guaranteed Adelaide Cup spot isn’t the only benefit awaiting the State of Origin winner. In addition to gaining direct entry into the Adelaide Cup Final, the State of Origin victor will also secure a position in the Group 3 Sandown Shootout, the four-sprinter feature to be run on 14 November. Another innovation will see the winner of the Adelaide Cup

receive automatic entry, should connections accept, into the invitation-only Group 1 Topgun at The Meadows, which will be run this year on 9 November. With positions in the Adelaide Cup and Shootout on offer, State of Origin places will be keenly sought after and the winner of Sandown’s Speed Star series, to be held on 15 September, will be rewarded with one of the four Victorian spots in the Origin series. GRV CEO Alan Clayton said the cross-state initiatives would generate broader interest in greyhound racing. “GRV and GRSA are delighted to introduce such unique opportunities to participants and their greyhounds and these new initiatives will add another dimension to our sport,” Mr Clayton said. “Victoria and South Australia have a great history of friendly rivalry across a number of sports, and if we can bring some of that parochialism into the greyhound racing world it has the potential to captivate interest from general sports fans.” GRSA Racing Manager, Shaun Mathieson said the alignment between the two state industry bodies demonstrates their close working relationship. “GRSA and GRV are consistently focussed on providing real benefit to its participants, as well as increasing interest in greyhound racing.” Mr Mathieson. “This linking of interstate feature races is an industry first and we believe that the linking of these feature races will bring an increased quality in fields, resulting in a better racing product.” “GRSA is a proud innovator, consistently pushing to bring positive outcomes to the industry.”

Treadmills were in continuous motion for 24 hours at 3AW’s Melbourne headquarters. A $1000 donation from GRV on behalf of Victoria’s greyhound racing community booked a treadmill for a 30 minute block, with Peita and Alan clocking up several kilometres during Neil Mitchell’s popular morning program. The Very Special Kids foundation provides access to respite and end-of-life care at Very Special Kids Hospice, as well as counselling and support services for the whole family. The Treadmill Challenge raised money for more than 900 families in need.

Trainer Rob Camilleri and partner Deb Coleman are overcome with emotion after Rajasthan’s win.

Rajasthan puts owners on the map By Gerard Guthrie

Y

oung South Australian owner Tim Aloisi has developed an amazing knack for purchasing tried greyhounds in recent years, and he was rewarded in no small way when Rajasthan won the $250,000 Group 1 RSN Sandown Cup Final (715m) on 24 May.

“My criteria when I’m looking at buying a race dog is that for me times are everything. It’s all about times, splits and run-homes, rather than results and form. I want to know what a dog does when it’s in front, when it’s behind and when it cops a check.

Aloisi, 31, and fellow owners Matt Lehman, Damien Bates and Mick McSorley headed to Melbourne with the attitude that if their $31 outsider Rajasthan could run a place they would be “absolutely stoked.”

“My criteria when I’m looking for a race

However, Rajasthan found the early lead and was never headed, aided by the fact reigning champion and $1.80 favourite, Tornado Tears encountered significant interference. Aloisi and Matt Lehman enjoyed their most prolific year as owners in 2018, racing an incredible 171 winners, the majority coming in their home state of South Australia. They’ve already racked up in excess of 80 winners this year but have decided on a major shift in their focus; opting to concentrate on Victoria. “We’ve won a couple of Group 3s and Chrichton Bale ran second in the Sale Cup and Shima Breeze made this year’s Australian Cup Final,” Aloisi said.

Orson Allen hangs on to defeat Flynn in 29.14sec in a heat of the Harrison-Dawson on 16 May.

They’ve landed a mighty fine stayer in Rajasthan – a winner of 20 races from his first 49 starts - and have pledged to invest their Sandown Cup winnings into buying more readymade race dogs. The Sandown Cup victory was also a breakthrough for trainer Rob Camilleri, with the Lara mentor snaring his first Group 1 after more than two decades in the sport.

eo Cleo (Robert Britton) notched a fifth straight win to the end of May with victory in the Group 1 Sapphire Crown (515m) - an event for female greyhounds on Sandown Cup night. She showed her capability as a sprinter when winning her Sapphire heat in a personal best 29.23sec, and also won the Group 3 Racecallers (595m) on Speed Star night (5 May). Considering the daughter of Cosmic Rumble and Ruby Ha Ha also won the Group 1 Sale Cup (650m) in December, her versatility at the elite level is almost unrivalled.

espite having to overcome box 4 in both his heat and final, Orson Allen (KC And All – Desalle Bale) made it a clean sweep of the last month’s Group 1 Harrison-Dawson series at Sandown Park. This included a slender but memorable heat victory over a fast-finishing Flynn, in a contest dubbed the ‘Race of the Year’. The $100,000 first prize took Orson Allen’s career earnings beyond $600,000. Trainer Correy Grenfell, 25, also won the Group Listed TAB Cup Night Stayers (715m) with Dyna Chancer on the same card.

“We really love stayers too. Ever since I’ve been in greyhounds, 700m dogs are what has interested me the most but they’re hard to get!”

Whilst Marg certainly leaves big shoes to fill, we are excited to welcome Ashley to our Club and are sure his knowledge of the racing industry coupled with his previous leadership experience will put him in good stead to fill the role. Ashley has a strong interest in racing, having previously worked for the Office of Racing and most recently as the Executive General Manager of Werribee Racing Club. He has a keen vision for the future of our Club and we look forward to welcoming him to The Meadows. Ashley is due to commence in late June. Flynn’s flourishing career has since provided the Meo family - in particular Charlie’s father, Tony - with plenty of joy, including victory in the Group 3 Bill Collins Speed Star (515m) at Sandown Park on 5 May. The focus of the trials will be very much on safety, welfare and reducing interference to a minimum, with technological advances, including tracking discs for participating greyhounds, crucial towards determining the best outcome. “We’ve had three trial sessions so far,” Hiscock said.

By Gerard Guthrie

T

he Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association’s decision to investigate the viability of conducting races over new shorter distances at The Meadows is gaining momentum, with an increased number of trials conducted over 448m and 462m.

“Marg posed the question to me that if the club needed to race over a shorter distance, did I have any ideas around where that would occur with clearly a view of having that occur as safely as possible,” Hiscock said. “My discussions with Marg were that the priority for The Meadows would always be for greyhounds at 500 metres and beyond and the idea of a shorter distance was to

“But now with the use of tracking devices we’re able to provide the trainers with a time from one metre out of the boxes, so trainers can actually see if their dog is improving. “Initially, we were thinking we might be looking at about three months for these trials. But because of the numbers to begin with we only had one trial session in the first month and that put us back a little bit but we’ve since been able to have two more trial sessions. “All the trials are performed in a controlled environment; there’ll be vision of the trials, head-on vision, to give us as much data as possible. This allows us then to get a true indication of what the dogs are doing out of the start; whether they’re crossing or interfering or whatever. “Some of it will be slightly opinion-based as well, with what people like I think about how the trials are operating from each particular distance, and effectively come up with what we think is the best possible scenario.”

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Cory Hiscock, long-time Track Manager at The Meadows, explained that the process was put in motion after discussions with retiring General Manager Marg Long to combat the possibility of a future shortage of greyhounds competing over 525m and beyond.

“Initially we struggled a little bit to get some attention from trainers to come and assist us. Because it’s a temporary trial there was a bit of an issue around no timing which might have scared a few people off.

“Thankfully Team Dailly and George Kantzidis have helped us with dogs to assist with the initial set-up of the concept as to whether it would actually work in a practical sense.

Suburban trainers behind the Eight Ball By Gerard Guthrie

s Philip Smith plots an exciting future with emerging youngster Eight Ball, he’s labelled training facilities at The Meadows as the key to successfully training from his suburban Pascoe Vale South home.

A

He admits it’s not easy at times, but says passion and The Meadows, where he works his dogs up the straight approximately five out of seven days, are crucial factors behind pulling it off.

“I would not be training greyhounds if we didn’t have The Meadows facility there,” Smith told RSN’s Off The Leash.

“It’s never-ending, having greyhounds. It’s pretty monotonous but it’s worth it at the end of the day when you’ve got fast animals like Eight Ball.

“I think it’s the best facility in Victoria for us hobby trainers.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

“There’s a lot of hobby trainers around the northern suburbs, like Peter Akathiotis, he’s got Blue Striker. He obviously trains his dogs up there, and the Galea family, I’m always seeing them at The Meadows.

8

“It can be quite difficult training from home, as we know all the professionals have got their own facilities – but we are so fortunate, us northern suburbs trainers, to have The Meadows.

“You’ve got to be passionate to have success in anything in life. If you’re not passionate about what you do, you virtually can’t have success. You’ve really got to want to do it.” Eight Ball was bred and raced by Smith’s good friend, Matthew Nash. Smith took a shine to the son of multiple Group winner Kayda Shae from just two weeks of age and he recalls Nash laughing off attempts to buy him at six months.

“If we hobby trainers didn’t have this facility we wouldn’t be training greyhounds. We are very fortunate this side of town to have The Meadows, I can tell you.”

“I was around there again when he was about 12 months old and I just said I want to train this dog and if you’re going to handball him over to someone else, make sure you give me a call and that’s exactly what he did,” Smith said.

“All the professionals have got their own facilities – but we are so fortunate, us northern suburbs trainers, to have The Meadows.”

“At the time I’d been out of the dogs for about six or seven months.

Smith juggles training his team of two, 25-month-old Eight Ball, which has scored some scintillating wins at Sandown lately including a 29.24sec personal best victory, and litter sister Hard Break, with running a sign-writing business from home.

“We – either Nashy or myself – didn’t envisage that he was going to reach these heights in such a short period of time.

“I was playing bowls and enjoying the good life to tell you the truth. “But he (Nash) put the screws on and the rest is history!

“To give credit to Nashy, when I got the dog off him he was in magnificent condition.”

Update on Dog Food Formula Testing n 21 March 2019, GRV published a notice on its website providing guidance to participants about the use of green tea in CopRice Working Dog Products, and other products that have green tea listed as an ingredient. GRV notes that it submitted a sample of CopRice Adult Working Dog (Beef, Vegetable & Brown Rice) kibble to its laboratory, and can report that no caffeine was detected in the sample.

O

GRV would like to remind participants that green tea may contain caffeine and participants should remain careful and diligent when providing it to racing greyhounds.

GRV also notes that CopRice has also provided the results of its own testing from the National Measurement Institute to GRV, which also reported no caffeine was detected in the samples.

Participants wanting to know more about the CopRice Working Dog products or testing can contact CopRice via phone on 1800 029 901 (Australia) or 0508 267 742 (New Zealand).

GRV encourages participants to refer to GRV’s feeding guidelines and FAQs to assist in making informed decisions about what to feed their racing greyhounds and reducing the risk of inadvertent positive swabs.

RV has been trialling different ways of providing participants with important information and notifications. For example, information currently being delivered uses a mix of written materials, pre-recorded videos and interactive workshops and seminars, selected to suit the content being delivered. To assist with the ongoing planning and development of participant learning and support content and its delivery to participants, GRV sought feedback via an online survey as to how participants prefer to receive different types of information, the types of information participants are interested in or looking for and how useful participants found

the information delivered over the last 12 months to be. Thank you to those participants who completed the survey, which was open during the month of April, and provided GRV with valuable insights. The results of the survey are currently being analysed, and once completed, will help GRV to continue to develop and improve appropriate, effective and useful learning and support experiences for participants in the future. If you missed the survey and would like to give us feedback on your learning and support experiences, you can do so via email to submissions@grv.org.au.

RADB imposed a penalty of three months disqualification and a $300 fine. John Caulfield – RADB Hearing 2 April 2019 – GAR 69 (B)(1). The greyhound ‘Amigo One’ was charged with failing to pursue the lure with due commitment by reason of injury at Bendigo on 27 March 2019. The RADB dismissed the appeal. Natalie Perkins – RADB Hearing 8 April 2019 – GAR 83 (2). Failed to present the greyhound ‘Tuska’ free of any prohibited

Peter West - RADB Hearing 9 April 2019 – LRR 42.18 (a) and LRR 42.18 (b). Mr. West used the Rabbit Blood Lure in connection with greyhound training, education or preparation to race, or racing. The RADB imposed a life disqualification. There will be a life disqualification recorded on each charge. Mr. West maintained he made an honest mistake and he should have checked the lure for blood before using it. Garry Harding – VCAT Hearing 12 April 2019 – GAR 83(2) The decision made by RADB on 18 January 2019 set aside and substituted with a further six months suspension wholly suspended and imposed a $500 fine. In addition, ‘Wybie Blue’ was disqualified from Race 1 at Sandown on 15 July 2019. David Willcocks – RADB Hearing 24 April 2019 – GAR 69 (A) (1). The greyhound ‘Brake’ was charged with failing to pursue the lure with due commitment at Sandown on 11 April. The RADB dismissed the appeal. Joe Destefano - RADB Hearing 29 April 2019 – LRR 42.18 (b). The Stewards of GRV investigated the euthanasia of the greyhound ‘Dolce Ventu’. Mr Destefano attempted to re-home the greyhound in South Australia, however failed to notify GRV that he intended to euthanise. RADB imposed a fine of $500, $250 of which is suspended for 12 months. David Agius – VCAT Hearing 24 April 2019. GAR 83(2) and GAR 84A - VCAT upheld the appeal and varied the penalty to 12 months disqualification (with 6 months suspended) and $500 fine. In addition, ‘Snip Snap’ was disqualified from Race 6 at Sale on 13 May 2018.

Welfare & Re-homing Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Greyhound Welfare and Re-homing

Action required to avoid kennel cough spread

V

ictoria is currently suffering from outbreaks of Kennel Cough, a highly contagious disease in dogs, and participants need to be alert for the disease among their greyhounds. Kennel Cough is caused by several upper respiratory viruses and bacteria, and symptoms include runny noses, sneezing and dry, hacking coughs which can last for up to several weeks. It is spread as droplets in the air from coughing dogs in close proximity to healthy dogs. Infected dogs can continue to spread the disease for up to three months after their symptoms have resolved. Infected greyhounds must be scratched or withdrawn from racing, trialing and GAP Pre-entry Assessments, and trainers and owners must consider scratching or withdrawing all other greyhounds that have been in contact with infected dogs.

‘Infected greyhounds must be scratched or withdrawn from racing, trialing and GAP Pre-entry Assessments.’ Participants need to immediately isolate greyhounds at the first sign of Kennel Cough and scrub their indoor and outdoor kennel areas with hospital grade disinfectant. They should

also immediately contact their veterinarian about treatment, quarantine and vaccination options for that greyhound and any other dogs on their property. If participants haven’t already vaccinated all their dogs against Kennel Cough, they should really consider doing it now, and preferably with the intra-nasal vaccine which provides faster protection. For more information, go to: www.greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/faqs/ kennel-cough.

Inactive Greyhound Follow-up

G

RV has now sent letters to owners in February and in April enquiring about their inactive greyhounds.

These letters are official requests that require a response from the owner, and non-responders will be referred to the Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit for investigation. Owners can either email or post the response or contact GRV

to discuss the matter. In addition, owners are required under the rules to notify GRV within a certain timeframe about all greyhound retirements (whether through death, euthanasia or retirement as a pet). This can usually be done by the owner on FastTrack, but again participants can contact GRV if unsure what to do. JUNE 2019 GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Don't wait, apply for DNA today!

G

RV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet

3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration. GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.

For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

Coursing world buzzing over celebrity greyhound By Molly Haines

ees On Fire, owned by Werribee’s VFL team and a winner of nine races from 41 starts on Victoria’s provincial circuit, has taken his career to a new level since being introduced to coursing this year. Trained by Warragul GRC Committee member Mark Johnson, the son of Makeshift and Chasin The Dream is unbeaten in two coursing events, a maiden at Benalla followed by the prestigious Longwood Cup, a series that included reigning Waterloo Cup winner, Bear Left.

Racing Report By Stuart Laing General Manager, Racing (Acting)

J

une is the final month of the 2018-19 racing season and also marks the end of the initiatives to pay unplaced prizemoney at level 3 meetings. 1 July 2019 marks the beginning of what promises to be another exciting season of greyhound racing in Victoria. Country Cup heat prizemoney will be increased in line with the Metropolitan increase that took effect from the beginning of 2019, with the winners of all Country Cup Heats now receiving $5,280. Greyhounds that finish unplaced at GRV Vic Bred Maiden Series Finals will continue to receive $100 unplaced prize money for the upcoming racing season. Kennel Cough Nominations, total races and field sizes were adversely affected in May due to a severe kennel cough strain which has been widespread across the state. 113 kennel cough scratchings were recorded for the month with a further 15 late scratchings. This high number of scratchings in May was higher than the total number of kennel cough scratchings for the entire 2018 calendar year. Racing Population The number of individual greyhounds racing per month continues to be lower than the ideal number to accommodate 23 weekly meetings. The low greyhound numbers are expected to continue for the coming months and as a result, from Friday 7 June onwards an increased

number of ‘Hybrid’ race meetings will be programmed, which will include ranking restricted races in Provincial full stake meetings (Read page 9 for more information about ‘Hybrid’ race meetings). Lure Update Participant feedback regarding the two alternative lures being trialled at Sandown (SAP) and The Meadows (MEP) has been positive, which has prompted the expansion of the trial to Metropolitan meetings commencing 6 June at Sandown and 8 June at The Meadows. GRV will also extend the trial to Bendigo and Warragul to gather data and feedback on one turn tracks in the near future. Scratchings Since Thursday 30 May, all scratchings are being displayed as they occur via the Fast Track desktop version. Participants, punters and the general public now have access to a scratchings list for each meeting that is graded and greyhounds that have been scratched will have a red line through the greyhound’s name on the Watchdog browser (Please note that PDF form guides only display scratchings once reserves have been allocated). The process to allocate reserves remains unchanged and will continue to occur at 4pm the day prior for Morning and Day meetings and 8:30am on the day for Twilight and Night meetings.

News By Lynton Hogan President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

The last few months have been busy ones. Much remains to be done. In April 2019, members of the GOTBA Vic committee met with the Racing Minister and the Head of the Office of Racing regarding a number of different issues on the administration and conduct of the sport of greyhound racing in Victoria, on topics ranging from decision-making processes to infrastructure to general performance. We will follow up on each and every point. In early May, we released our facebook page - facebook.com/ GOTBAVic - and website – gotbav.org.au – summary results of our costs survey which I mentioned briefly here last month. See also below for some more detail. Additionally, in light of a number of issues relating to Level 3 grading GOTBA Vic conducted, and will shortly release the results of, a survey into Level 3 grading, focussing on Aged Prize Money. Indicative results suggest widely felt unintended consequences of the adjusted grading system, including a number of greyhounds at or around Level 3 who become either ‘trapped’ in a cycle of getting insufficient runs or who are forced into out-graded racing opportunities. In both scenarios, fit and healthy greyhounds risk early retirement. Disappointingly, many of these issues were not unknown, having been raised by us and other participants before matters dramatically came to a head in April, in some cases months before. GOTBA Vic intends to re-calibrate the manner in which we raise and progress matters with GRV, including the way we operate with GRV’s consultation processes going forward.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Costs survey – results summary and key conclusions

24

GOTBA Vic received more than 100 participant (member and nonmember) responses to our recent costs survey. Responses came from a wide spectrum of participants, large and small. Questions concentrated on the costs of keeping greyhounds, how they’ve changed in the last two years and what future participation in greyhound racing looked like. The key points: •

average cost per week of keeping a greyhound in compliance with relevant requirements:

WHAT IS THE GOTBA? Are you a member of the GOTBA? If not, please contact us via the channels below. Website: gotbav.org.au General enquiries: gotbav@gmail.com Phone: 0423 357 620

young or breeding greyhounds: about $72 pw;

greyhounds in training about $76 pw;

1/3 of survey respondents put weekly costs of keeping a greyhound at minimum $90 pw;

94% say keeping greyhounds is more expensive now than in 2017, most respondents say costs of keeping greyhounds have increased by at least 15% in the last two years;

50% intend to participate less in 2020 and beyond than they do now. Main stated reasons (multiple could be stated): rules and regulation (67%), Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds (62%) and costs/prize money (around 50%).

Key conclusion To use the language of integrity that is much used towards participants, it is clear that the structural integrity of greyhound racing in Victoria requires renewed focus on prize money and increases in returns. This costs survey shows that real, measurable cost pressures – that affect you and the decisions that you make every day - are making participation less attractive and more difficult to sustain, particularly at Level 3 where participants share all of the costs and burdens of greyhound racing participation but get a fraction of the returns when doing so. Additional compliance or rule burdens add to this pressure. Where the racing calendar effectively relies on regular Level 3 participation to cross subsidise higher grade racing, issues that affect participation quickly become a real structural issue for greyhound racing in Victoria. The Greyhound Owners Trainers and Breeders Association of Victoria Inc will continue to press issues arising from these and other survey results and feedback to us. GOTBA Vic implores GRV to continually consider these things carefully in the management of the sport of greyhound racing. GOTBA Vic is committed to being an open, transparent organisation for its members, one that enhances and projects the voices and interests of greyhound racing participants at every level for the benefit of all of them. We best do that by hearing from you and from your active membership with us. Join us.

The Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of member and their greyhounds. GOTBA Committee: Lynton Hogan (President), Robert Britton & Sandra Reed (Co-Vice Presidents), Gayle Osbourne (Secretary), John Reid, Karen Leek, Geoff Miles, Stan Ralph and Jess Spoljaric (General Committee).

Testing Dates Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: •

have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at:

greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently. Pre-entry Assessment Booking Number:

From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.

JUNE 2019

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

that GAP adopted more than 1,300 greyhounds into the homes of Victorian families in the 2017 financial year? That’s an average of more than three per day!
