COVER: The first adopter for the record-breaking adoption long weekend, Leon with new mate Thunder.

Firstly, I’d like to offer my heartful thanks to Victoria’s greyhound racing participants and clubs for your great efforts in supporting Victorian communities affected by the bushfires. The Meadows is donating $10,000 to the Bushfire Appeal and the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club has raised $5,000 plus a further $50,000 donated in partnership with the Cranbourne trots and thoroughbreds for the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund. Warragul and Sale have both held fundraisers and Bendigo and Geelong donated $100 over January to the Bushfire Appeal every time a dog from the red number one box won. I also thank all those individual participants who have been supporting their communities by donating a share of their prizemoney and using their trailers to help move displaced dogs of all breeds in the Gippsland region. For its part, GRV has been donating $250 over January to the Bushfire Appeal every time a greyhound wins a race from the red No. 1 box at any Victorian track and with $45,000 raised during the month. GRV has also signed up to the Business and Sport for Bushfire Recovery initiative that will see it hold upcoming Board and Leadership Team meetings and other events in affected regions over the coming months to help support local economies. This has been a very challenging time for everyone, but GRV is really pleased to see clubs and participants working together for our communities. I’d like to take this opportunity to also thank participants for your patience and understanding of the necessary changes to the race program over the past month due to the heat and hazardous air quality. In other news, Victorian families across the State have set a new record by adopting 148 greyhounds at GAP’s three-day adoption event over 17-19 January at its Seymour headquarters. This easily surpassed the 110 adopted at last year’s similar event and the 81 greyhounds re-homed on 17 January set a record for the most greyhounds adopted in a single day in any Australian state. I thank all the GAP staff, foster carers and volunteers for a great outcome that highlights the truly world-class work of the program.

I am also pleased to announce that GRV has become the first racing body in Australia and the only greyhound regulator in the world to be granted law enforcement powers, in this case through Animal Welfare Victoria. This decision recognises GRV’s commitment to greyhound welfare and its ability to deliver on this commitment and you can read more about in this edition of the Monthly. Finally, now that the new Code of Practice is operational, I ask all participants to ensure that they are compliant, especially in matters such as Establishment Health Managements Plans and record-keeping, and remind you that GRV is here to help you with this, so please visit greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/code-of-practice or contact Code Support if you need more information or assistance.

Alan Clayton Chief Executive Officer Greyhound Racing Victoria

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA FEBRUARY 2020

Looking ahead now, GRV’s 2019-24 Strategic Plan is in place and guiding long term development and growth of the sport. The Plan is built around three strategic directions and the first is Innovation to Drive Revenue by increasing customer engagement and developing new markets, products and content. The second is Racing Safety & Greyhound Welfare which covers safer racing, breeding, whelping, education and training, population optimisation, participant support and re-homing. And the third strategic direction is One Industry which is about developing a shared vision and set of objectives that connects all participants, clubs and all stakeholders as a strong and unified industry. More details about the Strategic Plan and its target outcomes are available online at: grv.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ GRV-2019-24-Strategic-Plan.pdf.

As part of the Racing Safety & Greyhound Welfare direction, GRV is developing a new breeding strategy to deliver an optimum racing population to support Victoria’s racing calendar and interstate demand. The new Strategy will also help ensure that Victoria doesn’t overbreed and that the number of dogs retiring each year can be effectively re-homed by GAP, other agencies and participants without undue pressure. Breeders and other participants will have significant input into the strategy which will also work to improve breeding practices and the quality of active racers. GRV will closely monitor and share breeding numbers and intervene where necessary to maintain optimum levels. Details of the new strategy will be announced in the near future following more consultation with participants

And that’s a wrap! The Greyhound Adoption Program’s annual three-day adoption event was held in Seymour on 17-19 January. In 2020 records were set all weekend, culminating in a total of 148 greyhounds finding new homes, the highest number of greyhounds adopted in a single event. Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Chair Peita Duncan said it was no surprise that the record was broken. “This just shows the love affair the Victorian public has with the greyhound breed,” Ms Duncan said. “The secret is out and there are now thousands of greyhounds in homes and apartments right across the state.” “The most pleasing thing about the weekend is we have found loving homes for more than 140 of our beautiful greyhounds.” “I’m sure all the people who have taken home greyhounds this weekend will join me in saying well done again to our GAP staff and volunteers who have matched them with their new family member.” GAP Re-homing Manager Sean Stanton was overwhelmed at the achievements of the weekend. “This is a tough event to prepare for and it’s a taxing weekend on staff and volunteers, but I’m so thankful to everyone for their hard work. The results speak for themselves,” said Sean. “Last year’s record of 110 was something that I thought we could match, but the response this year has been amazing, and my thanks go out to all the GAP staff and volunteers who have worked across the three days. Well done!” If you would like to find out more information about adopting a greyhound, please contact GAP on 03 5799 0166.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT

BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The new Code of Practice will require all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination from 1 January 2020. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are slightly more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine.

New Transport Regulations for Victoria

Re-homing Package now available!

On 14 December 2019 the Minister for Agriculture released new regulations for the transportation of animals in Victoria (Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2019). These regulations impact on ALL Victorians including participants of Greyhound Racing.

GRV has recently released a new Re-homing Package with new forms to support Code compliance.

To support participants, GRV have updated the GRV Transport Policy to reflect the relevant changes to transportation requirements. The updated transport policy can be found on the Greyhound Care and Standards webpages.

Workshops GRV is currently reviewing workshop locations and dates for 2020. Please speak to your local club manager if you have a preference for a specific topic you would like to see offered at your local club. Workshop topics and booking information can be viewed at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/workshops.

The Re-homing Package enables a GRV registered owner to comply with the requirements of The Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds (the Code), and to transfer the ownership of the greyhound on the GRV Microchip Registry to the new pet owner. The Re-homing Package contains two booklets: 1.

Re-homing Guide – Information for Participants

2.

Pet Greyhound Post Adoption Care Guide (that must be provided to the new pet owner by the GRV registered owner upon re-homing)

Importantly, the Pet Greyhound Post Adoption Care Guide contains the Notice of Retirement as a Pet – Transfer to New Owner form and the Re-homing Statement. Completion of these forms, AND the provision of the Pet Greyhound Post Adoption Care Guide to new owners, will ensure compliance with all requirements in relation to rehoming under the Code. The Re-homing Package is available on the Re-homing section of the GRV Greyhound Care & Standards Website: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ Hard copies of the package are also available at most clubs or you may also request a copy by calling GRV on 03 8329 1100.

WELFARE AND REHOMING REPORT

Maddy, Timmy and Moo Moo; the winning trio BY PHIL WEIR

One of GAP’s youngest – and most active – volunteers has had her volunteering and passion for greyhounds rewarded. At her Berwick Lodge Primary School Grade six graduation, 12-year-old Madelyn Atkins was presented with the La Trobe Leadership and Community Service Award. Madelyn, and her mother Ailsa, joined GAP as volunteers in October 2018 and attend about 30 events every year promoting the breed as a perfect pet. They’re familiar faces at adoption days, race meetings and the Melbourne Show. Madelyn explains “After adopting our dogs – Timmy and Moo Moo - and seeing how much fun it is to have greyhounds, mum and I decided to volunteer and spread the word. We have some much fun with GAP and the other volunteers as we are all so passionate about the group and I get to spend time with my mum and meet new friends.” “Moo Moo is our show girl who does most of the events. I like asking the little kids what you think her name is? What does she look like? As she looks like a black & white cow, her name is Moo Moo. They always laugh!” She adds “People still think that you need a big backyard and need to take the dogs for long walks. They find it amazing when I tell them that they are lazy dogs and are recommended for people who live in apartments. The best example is Moo Moo who just lays down at events and let’s little kids pat her and have hugs, she loves it!” “Timmy, who just turned five, loves watching Disney movies and sharing popcorn.” Timmy’s previous owner is trainer Ashlee Terry. “She was nice and sent mum photos of him when he was a puppy and the winner’s photo of him when he won at Healesville, then we met her when we were volunteering at last year’s Warragul Cup, which was really cool.”

Madelyn and Moo Moo

The annual Healesville Women On Track event will be held on Sunday March 8. This year we will be remembering Michelle Niele and fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Community Care Foundation. There will be several events to honour Michelle. ‘65 Roses Cup’ - 350m S/E (heats March 1, final March 8) Cystic Fibrosis Maiden - 300m (VICGREYS) (heats March 1, final March 8) Women on Track S/E Veteran 350m (250+ ranking) Must be handled by a lady. Michelle Niele Memorial Gr.5 (bitches only VICGREYS). Must be handled by a lady. Restricted win - 350m (3-6 wins VICGREYS) Must be handled by a lady.

RACING UPDATE BY GREG KERR, GENERAL MANAGER, RACING

I’m pleased that in its first week, the Ballarat distance challenge has gained 22 nominations. The focus of this series is to encourage new dogs and trainers into distance racing, with the added trial of the finals being determined in the A final by the fastest times, and the B final by the slowest times. The objective with the B final was to give those dogs that unsuccessfully competed in the heats to have another crack at it later.

It’s been another challenging month in terms of meeting losses. I don’t need to remind you of the heat, smoke, lightning that we have endured, but do hope that we manage to get through the next couple of months with minimal losses. I’m pleased to introduce Jackson Keane to the team. Jackson will join us as Assistant Racing & Admin Manager. Jackson will assume most of the functions that Blake carried out, plus some. Another change is that Brett McLaughlin has picked up extra duties and is now Grader & Race meeting Coordinator. Brett has been outstanding when dealing with the heat, smoke, abandonment, and cancellation of our meetings, so it’s a well-deserved recognition of his work.

The Greyhound Participant Support line is now fully operational. The line is free and completely confidential, offering a counselling service, financial coaching, advice on personal nutrition, wellbeing, introductory legal advice, and a 24-hour phone support line to our participants and family. The support line is to be used if you need it, each day brings its unique challenges; we have good and bad days but know that in those bad days there is someone there that you can talk to.

Independent consultants Gravelroad have started their assignment in pulling together several modelling tools which will allow GRV to more strategically place race meetings on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. Their strategic insights into our business will allow GRV to make better informed decisions by accurately predicting what changes may look like, which in one of Australia’s biggest race programs aims to drive extra revenue.

BURNETT’S BABIES CHASING AUS CUP DREAM BY JASON BONNINGTON

ASIDE from being in the title of a legendary local band, the sleepy town of Little River probably doesn’t strike a significant blow in the popular imaginations of Australians far and wide. They have no famous footballers or celebrities or politicians. But right now they harbour two of Australia’s most popular and charismatic canine athletes; Who Told Stevie and Simon Told Helen. PHOTO: CLINT ANDERSON

And the extraordinary cast of characters associated with the gifted greyhounds are perhaps more magnetic than the flying pups themselves. First there is their terse but exceptionally entertaining trainer Dave Burnett. A thoroughbred nut that got into greyhounds because dogs were cheaper than horses and courtesy of a $4000 punting windfall which funded his first pup – 33-time winner Jack Benjamin – Burnett’s starting story is as Aussie as they get. “It was way back in 1996 and I just loved racing,” the wry conditioner explained.

“My wife at the time had already told me she’d own a BMW before I owned a horse – of course we got neither – and I went down the pub one day with a client of mine who wanted a bet on the dogs. “It was a Trifecta, I still remember to this day it was one to win with two and nine for second and third, anyway it got up; he won $400 and I won $4000 and that was how I afforded my first dog.” Despite being so successful with Jack Benjamin, Burnett has had even more prolific winners with Jarman the greatest exponent of his placement winning 37 events. As for his most talented greyhound, that was Kiss Me Ketut, a Brisbane Cup winner with a cult following who tackled many of Australia’s most revered Group 1 classics. That was until Stevie and Helen rocked around. As things stand Silver Chief champ Simon Told Helen is the team flagbearer as we career toward the Australian Cup on February 29 but Burnett is certain his brilliant brother Who Told Stevie is at least as naturally gifted. And if either greyhound wins The Meadows’ most revered and lucrative race of the year - $300,000 goes to the winner – then Burnett will realise a lifelong dream.

“The three races which stand apart from everything else are the Melbourne Cup, the Easter Egg and the Australian Cup.” “Just to have a runner in one of those races is an unbelievable thrill but to win one would be mindblowing; we’ll be celebrating if we win I can tell you that.” The first man Burnett will be shouting should Stevie or Helen salute is extraordinary owner/breeder Brian Parsons, yet another of the charismatic characters which make this story so compelling A perpetually optimistic individual who has overcome multiple death scares – including a cardiac arrest which left him without oxygen for 25 minutes - Parsons has spent so much time in medical settings that his GP and surgeon are part-owners of both Who Told Stevie and Simon Told Helen. And at 76 he is desperate to see his two magnificent sons of Barcia Bale achieve more Group 1 glory at The Meadows and beyond. “I only open the gates at 7am and it’s a good thing because if I didn’t Brian would be here at 5,” Burnett said. “It’s incredible the joy they give him and the joy they give all the owners; it’s a wonderful sight to see Brian’s surgeon who has such a serious job letting his hair down and relishing the big wins. 14

“There’s pressure that comes with that but it’s all worth it. We’ve waited a lifetime for these young dogs and now they have arrived.”

The 2020 TAB Australian Cup Carnival is drawing ever closer and there’s a new band of elite up and comers, striving to out-chase and out-stay the race-hardened veterans.

FEATURE

YOUTH ON THEIR SIDE? With first place prizemoney soaring to $300,000 for the 2020 incarnation of the great race, speculation is mounting as to who will emerge as the main contenders.

2013: SPUD REGIS

Brilliant brothers Simon Told Helen and Who Told Stevie (David Burnett) are the names on everyone’s lips, sharing the spotlight with other explosive youngsters including Shima Shine (Andrea Dailly), Aston Wizard (Glenn Rounds) and Tiggerlong Tonk (Correy Grenfell). Andrea Dailly knows something about what it takes to prepare an Australian Cup champion, having prepared a staggering five out of the last ten winners. Asked whether she thinks this year’s race will belong to the older brigade or fall to the young chargers, Andrea kept her cards close to her chest.

2016: DYNA DOUBLE ONE

2018: HECTON BALE

“It’s hard to predict how the younger dogs will handle the step up into such a strong series which always has such depth about it.

There are a few young ones coming through the ranks who look like being genuine superstars but you can’t underestimate the benefit of Group race experience.” TAB has marked Shima Shine & Simon Told Helen equal favourites in their pre nom futures market, closely followed by Feral Franky, Sennachie & reining Melbourne Cup Champion Whiskey Riot – perhaps foreshadowing the task up against the proven performers to chase down their younger adversaries.

2019: DYNA PATTY

Only time will tell whether the young guns have what it takes to overthrow the establishment.

New welfare authority for GRV Following recommendations by the Perna and Milne Reports in 2015, Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has been granted a new authority by the Victorian Government’s Animal Welfare Victoria to investigate and resolve animal welfare issues. Under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986, Investigative Stewards working for GRV’s Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit (GRIU) are now appointed as Restricted Authorised Officers. This brings GRV into line with RSPCA powers and makes GRV the first racing body in Australia and the only greyhound regulator in the world to be granted such an authority.

“Receiving this authority from the Victorian Government recognises GRV’s commitment to greyhound welfare and how we have been delivering on this commitment so far. It is an important milestone for GRV and a significant step forward for Victoria in achieving world best practice when it comes to welfare of racing greyhounds throughout their careers.” To contact GRIU’s Investigative Stewards if you have concerns about welfare issues and suspicious activity, visit: grv.org.au/report-suspicious-activity or call: 1300 856 109.

GRV’s General Manager for Integrity, Shane Gillard, said the new authorisation strengthened GRV’s ability to investigate and resolve animal welfare issues. “This authorisation adds to GRIU’s tool kit as it helps builds the skills of our Investigative Stewards and allows them to act even more swiftly when they have reason to believe a greyhound’s welfare is at serious risk,” Mr Gillard said.

GOTBA REPORT BUSHFIRES AND INDUSTRY SUPPORT The GOTBA commends the way in which the greyhound racing community – regulator, clubs but most importantly participants themselves – has come together to support those in the greyhound racing community affected by the tragic Victorian bushfires.

HELPING HAND FUND While support will not and need not, always be financial – reaching out to those you know who might need assistance even to see how they are going can make a difference – participants affected by the bushfires and suffering financial hardship may be eligible for payment from the Helping Hand Fund of up to $4,000. The Helping Hand Fund is a trust originally set up by the GOTBA for benevolent purposes of giving assistance to greyhound owners, trainers and their dependants who suffer injuries in the course of training or racing greyhounds, who suffer illness or accident or who otherwise require assistance due to genuine financial hardship.

It is independently administered by trustees appointed by GOTBA and by Sandown and the Meadows. Participants who may wish to apply for assistance from the Helping Hand Fund can contact the GOTBA Secretary – gotbav@gmail.com – and we will endeavour to have an application form provided to you.

CODE I remind those members who have any queries or issues regarding the new Code of Practice or its practical application to them, that GOTBA can provide an avenue for addressing those queries or issues. Members should feel free to contact us via the GOTBA Secretary.

Lynton Hogan President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.

GOTBA REPORT

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the preentry assessment sessions are now booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au.

Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au

All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■ have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and ■ not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived.

BY PETER QUILTY

Eaglehawk-based husband-and-wife team Peter and Roselyn Nicholls are not greyhound racing household names, but they love the sport – and their greyhounds - with a passion! One of their pin-ups is El Grand Knocka (aka Ernie), an ‘iron dog’ who has contested 129 starts. Roselyn says El Grand Knocka has a will to win, but he also has a will to live. His racing career was nearly over before it even began. You see, “Ernie” was bitten by a brown snake – one of the deadliest in the world – as a 12-month-old pup and his life hung in the balance.

“Patience and TLC,” Roselyn added. “He’s also a very athletic type.” El Grand Knocka has hardly had a break from racing since commencing his career in late February 2017. However, he did have an enforced seven-week layoff after sustaining spiked webbing in the catching pen following a race at Ballarat in early October. “He’s a champion to us… All he wants to do is run,” Roselyn said. “He never gives up.” And, if you listen to Roselyn, imminent retirement is not on the agenda for “Ernie”.

“It was touch and go, he’s lucky to be alive,” Roselyn said. “We rushed him to Tatura Veterinary Clinic where he received two vials of anti-venom.”

“We’ll retire him when he stops jumping up and down when we go to get him out of his kennel every morning,” Roselyn said.

Roll on nearly four years and the rising five-year-old is a greyhound racing success story in his own right. He’s notched 25 wins and 51 minor placings and has developed somewhat of a cult following in the Bendigo region.

And didn’t I mention that the Nicholls’ love their greyhounds? Well, the proof is in the pudding with El Grand Knocka’s dam, Pepe’s A Knocka (aka “Netty”).

“He’s got a big heart,” Roselyn said. “He’s no star but as honest as they come.” So, what’s the secret to his racing longevity and amazing constitution?

Ain’t it Grand

“She’s our pet, and has the run of the house… She’s a real couch potato and we absolutely love her,” Roselyn concluded. And I’m tipping mum will need to create a little room on the couch for her son once the curtain is drawn on his racing career.
