PRELIMINARY GREEN WALL SKETCH
PRELIMINARY VENTILATION SKETCH
Using the ground to cool air before entering through the structural columns which then cools the space below the concrete flooring. The air in this space can then be vented into the auditorium which then rises to the top of the space and can then be vented out through the east and west walls. The use of the green wall on the south face of the auditorium will allow for a cooling affect on the curtain wall facade. Plantings will grown up and down the screen in the spring through the fall and then die off during the winter months.

THE WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS REFLECTION???????? There is definitely a great deal of knowledge in which I have taken away from this studio/project. I think I will start with how much research and studying it sometimes takes to develop a scheme to its full potential. BUT on the other hand, I have also realized that working on a design too much (over thinking and reevaluating the design over and over) can also be a bad thing. The process in which this studio was based on, in the fact that we took baby steps through the entire project and let those individual solutions create or develop our grand scheme was a magnificent way of going about it. MUCH APPRECIATED and I think I might continue to try and follow the same criteria for future studios. Through that process, I definitely learned how many different aspects of a design are determined by other things like the systems of the building, the structure, the site context and so on. Although if there is one criticism I might have about the studio, it’s the fact that we didn’t get more involved in the site context portion of the project. I feel this really was an important part of this project and it seemed to fall by the way-side for almost everyone including myself. THINGS I NEED TO FOCUS ON NEXT......... Well let’s start out by saying that the space both below and above the auditorium need to be thought out a little more. My initial idea of making the roof a simplistic design with just planters surrounding the perimeter of the roof and just a few protruding seats was done for the simple fact that I wanted the faculty and students to develop that space and this is something that could be done every spring. Initially I thought this was a good idea but after speaking with Professor Sanguanetti (or however you spell it), that maybe the idea of developing it for the first time would be could but giving the flexibility of redesign may be incorporated into the design. Second would be the space directly underneath the auditorium. This was brought up in two of my reviews and I completely agreed with the fact that the space becomes dark a little bit and people tend to have a fear I guess you could say about standing underneath a structure of such nature. This makes complete sense and maybe if I would have developed that space a little more (ummmm let’s just say the build yard or maybe a sculpture garden), it could become a nice place to congregate. So for sure this would probably be the very next thing I would work on. Third thing to work on might be the detailing on how in the hell this thing stands up. REALLY? I wouldn’t even know where to begin with this one but I sure in the hell would give it a try. The issue is not necessarily how its supported by the columns but more so on how the ventilation really is going to run through the columns and into the plenum space under the seating. This is definitely a critical part of my design and probably needs some more looking into for that matter. The last thing that I would focus on is what’s represented in the sketch to the right. An idea that Rainy had a couple weeks ago and one in which Dean Gaunt brought up to me in the review. The idea of taking the green wall/screening and making that horizontal so the structure behind it appears as if it is coming out of the wall. This I think would also have a strong relationship with the Zufferey House which was one of my precedents. The appearance of a building coming out of the ground at an angle is something I was going for and I honestly should have looked into Rainy’s idea a little more.
