California's Newest Commercial Solar Mandate will Boost Solar Panel Leads

The state of California has been pushing hard on policies that will accelerate solar expansion. In an attempt to reduce strain on the energy grid and meet carbon-zero goals, it already issued a mandate requiring rooftop solar for all new homes and small multifamily residences built after January 1st, 2020.

Now, a similar mandate has come for the commercial sector. On August 11th, the California Energy Commission (CEC) unanimously voted to require solar panel and battery storage installations on most commercial facilities built after January 1st, 2023.

Details of the New Mandate The mandate issued by the CEC is an adoption of the stipulations set in the 2022

Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Energy Code). In December, it will be reviewed by the California Building Standards Commission (CBSC), which is expected to give official approval for this new policy to go into effect. From that point, contractors and business owners will have a year to anticipate and prepare for the new requirements that will be imposed on any building jobs they initiate in 2023 and onward.

California’s latest rule applies to most newlybuilt commercial buildings, including “hotels, offices, medical offices and clinics, retail and grocery stores, restaurants, schools, and civic spaces like theaters, auditoriums, and convention centers.” The size of the panel systems and storage batteries must meet maximum possible capacity in order to reduce the property’s reliance on grid energy.

In addition to the new commercial solar standards, the mandate includes other energy-related provisions, such as requiring that all new residences have “electric-ready” infrastructure meaning that the homeowners can easily switch to using electrical appliances and charging electric vehicles.

What Does Contractors?

Solar

Simply put, solar contractors are going to see a growing number of business customers enter the market. Most commercial building projects that commence after 2023 are going to need the services of solar contractors that can install both panels and battery storage. Additionally, the new rules pertaining to the electric-readiness of homes will spark even greater interest in residential solar. Homeowners who are interested in converting to all-electric appliances and/or electric vehicles will have a greater need for the cost relief that solar can provide. Contractors can therefore look forward to a great deal of growth in just over a year’s

time. However, those that are struggling to get enough sales now will need some help while they wait.
