Growing Phase-Outs of Dirty Energy will Soon Make Solar a Primary Power Source
The new administration has set its sights on carbon-free electricity by 2035. And more broadly, America is aiming for completely carbon-free emissions by 2050. Achieving such goals is requiring a dramatic shift in the nation’s infrastructure, transitioning to systems that generate and distribute clean energy. Naturally, the result of this is that dirty energy sources such as coal and petroleum are being increasingly phased out.
Fossil Fuels are Falling A recent report by Vox stated that over the past decade, US coal production dropped by 25%, and nearly one-third of coal power capacity was retired. Coal plants across the country have seen more and more shutdowns, with one closure happening in Montana just last month, and more in Arkansas scheduled within just a few years.
Coal-centric economies in regions like Appalachia and Wyoming are attempting to diversify and pivot before the inevitable dieoff of their local plants. In many areas, the pandemic has caused the transition to speed up from a gradual decrease to a painfullysharp drop off. Now that the solar industry is moving in, former coal workers are finding new job opportunities in the emerging sector.
Oil has seen a similar decline, with more than 56,600 orphan oil wells recently being identified. There has been a significant rollout of programs designed to help former oil workers and others from the dirty energy industry find new careers as wells are closed. Given that the current administration is planning to eliminate fossil fuel tax cuts, only further closures are expected as these companies find it more financially difficult to stay up and running.
Solar’s Forecast is Strong The IEA’s Executive Director, Dr. Fatih Birol, has expressed extreme optimism in regard to solar’s rise to dominance:
“I see solar becoming the new king of the world’s electricity markets. Based on today’s policy settings, it is on track to set new records for deployment every year after
2022… If governments and investors step up their clean energy efforts in line with our Sustainable Development Scenario, the growth of both solar and wind would be even more spectacular – and hugely encouraging for overcoming the world’s climate challenge.”
When the Biden administration’s prosustainability initiatives take hold, the nation is set to see widespread solar adoption. And
as state-level governments enact legislation to accomplish their own clean energy goals, American households will benefit from more incentivizing legislation, such as California’s recent mandate for all new home builds to be outfitted with solar.
