How America's Solar Contractors are Fighting for Growth
The solar industry may have grown tremendously in the past years, but those gains have been hard-won. Between the fossil-fuel industry and big utility corporations, there have been many who have tried to halt solar’s momentum.
These adversaries have made it necessary for contractors and other solar businesses to band together and fight against attempted cut-downs. We’re seeing industry representatives work
harder than ever to advocate for the solar industry and bring about policies that will lead to its expansion. Significant moves have been made in September 2021 alone. They are reviewed below.
Asking Congress for a Long-Term ITC In early September, SEIA spearheaded a letter to Congress, backed by nearly 750 solar
companies. These organizations came from every stage of the solar supply chain, representing interests from manufacturing all the way down to end-user installation.
The letter pleads Congress to support clean energy policies, specifically asking for an extended ITC at a 30% rate. Proposals for directpay provisions and inclusion of standalone energy storage are stipulated as well.
Beyond the ITC, the letter entreats that Congress greenlight major clean energy investments, with the key goal to increase solar demand and incentivize American-made manufacturing. Upgrades to modernize the energy grid, and pro-workforce policies are also requested.
Urging Rejection of Newly-Proposed Tariffs The Department of Commerce is currently considering petitions that ask for 50-250% duties on imports of CSPV panels and cells from Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand. This trio currently supplies 80% of all panel imports to America.
SEIA has again rallied with numerous solar companies to protest these petitions. They have issued another letter outlining just how harmful these tariffs would be for the solar industry, and
how steeply they would set back the nation’s clean energy goals. It is estimated that activating the tariffs would result in 18 GW of lost solar deployment - equal to America’s entire solar capacity installed before 2015.
