Electric Car Owners are Top Solar Installation Leads.

As electric cars grow increasingly popular, the solar industry has noticed a big overlap in the customer base. Those who purchase electric cars are flocking to solar as well, and it’s easy to see why.

EV Incentives Just Aren’t Enough To incentivize electric vehicle (EV) adoption, there are a number of one-off rebate incentives offered from a number of different agencies. The Federal government has one of the most substantial: a tax credit of $2,500 to $7,500. Some utility providers, like PG&E, also offer special rates for customers that charge their EVs at home (mostly during off-peak hours).

However, these incentives don’t do enough to minimize the cost of EV adoption and charging. EV charging adds about 4,000 kWh of consumption annually. And with electricity costs still going up, EV owners need additional support to make charging affordable.

For these residents, solar offers the perfect solution since it can cover much of an EV’s electricity needs. Those who adopt solar pay as little as $200 per year to charge their car, and estimates put total savings at $16,250 over a 25-year period.

Charging Infrastructure Isn’t Widespread Although there are public charging stations available, there aren’t enough to sustain the needs of most EV owners, especially outside of the densest urban centers. In largely rural states like Wyoming, where there are long stretches of highway between even standard gas stops, a lack of charging stations throughout most-traveled routes is a major obstacle for EV owners. There are plans to expand charging accessibility in Wyoming and similar states, bringing the distance between stations down to 50 miles. But it will take years before these plans can be fulfilled. Even then, public infrastructure may still not be convenient enough to beat at-home charging, especially when its costs are covered by solar.

EV Buyers are Already Savings & Energy-Conscious Those who have been driven to trade their gas-powered cars for EVs are residents for whom savings and energy consumption are top-of-mind. Interest in pairing solar and EVs leaped by 90% when gas prices hit their recent peak. Environmental responsibility is also marked as the main motivator among EV owners, and it currently ranks as a stronger motivator than economics among solar customers.

These similar priorities have created a natural convergence. A 2020 survey discovered that 60% of EV households also had solar systems installed, while 30% of solar owners report that they purchased their systems specifically for their EV charging. Analysis of online solar installation leads shows that solar contractors experienced major jumps in quote requests through guides and landing pages that directly addressed the cost of charging EVs. Clearly, EV purchasing and solar adoption go hand in hand among consumers.

Connecting with Top Sales Prospects Reaching EV owners as solar contractors should be a major marketing strategy going forward. Lead generation materials, sales pitches, and even local dealer partnerships can all be leveraged to help contractors make customers of EV drivers. In terms of general sourcing of solar leads, contractors can experience higher rates of success by also sourcing pre-screened leads from a trusted agency.
