Despite all of the turmoil, this year has been busy for solar. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has been steadily making progress on many initiatives that are set to boost the solar market. In turn, contractors can expect greater success in solar lead generation. Below, we go over some of the DOE’s most noteworthy plans on their 2020 solar agenda.

The American-Made Solar Competition The DOE is holding the American-Made Solar competition, and round 3 just wrapped up. The winners were announced on July 10th. Round 4 is now commencing.

Innovation is the basis of the competition, with each entering team presenting concepts for new solar technologies that will be manufactured in the USA. Round 3 finalists get $100,000 in cash and $75,000 in vouchers to use at the DOE National Labs or other qualified partner facilities to build prototypes that will be presented for the final round of judgement this fall. The winner will receive $500,000 in cash and another $75,000 in vouchers for further development. By the competition’s end, American solar manufacturing will be able to welcome an exciting new player to the market. SETO is Aiming to Lower Solar Prices The Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) is a division of the DOE that is currently managing many projects intended to reduce solar power costs. These projects include everything from education programs to attract and train new solar installers, to technical innovations that improve solar panels and accessories.

One project is being carried out by Cypress Creek Renewables in San Francisco. This team is working to improve analytics and modeling surrounding the estimation of efficiency improvements and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). The results will allow system integrators to meet or exceed the LCOE target of $.03 per kilowatt-hour by 2030. There are also a few SETO projects that are specifically working to expand solar access for low and middle-income residents. One, called Lift Solar Everywhere, is investigating the feasibility of financial models that allow customers to pay for their systems with savings generated.

Another project in Colorado is collaborating with utility companies, multi-family housing facilities, and investors to develop shared financing solutions that will open the path to more multifamily solar development. More projects seeking to improve lower-income accessibility are underway in California, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Arizona.

Over $125 million in funding was approved earlier this year for a new crop of solar research projects. SETO expects to announce the funding winners by late October. WWW.GRIDFREEDOM.COM

The DOE’s Plans Will Make Solar Lead Generation More Fruitful With so much effort being put into making solar options more diverse and affordable, the work being done by the DOE will make it easier for contractors to find more customers. However, it will take quite a bit of time for these plans to pay off.
