employments. But the activities within Grieg Foundation give a different type of footprints that are rewarding for all of us. The annual reports from GF during these 17 years, give a good overwiew of what we have supported. Some projects are smaller and have only received support for one year. Large projects, like SOS Children´s Villages, have been with us for many years and required active follow up. These projects would not have been possible and been so successful without our initiative. I am grateful for having had the opportunity to work with Grieg Foundation and before that in a more direct manner for the Grieg Group companies. Businesses come and go. The activities of GF give results that will be Lasting Footprins when we are all gone.

Per Grieg sr, retiring Secretary Almost all of the cultural and charitable institutions in Bergen are results of private initiatives and financing. These initiatives very often come from the City’s leading industrialists, shipowners and businessleaders. This tradition is so strong that the sustainability of many of the institutions that makes Bergen a flourishing city both culturally and within science, health-services and public services, depends on this support. The Grieg family has always taken part in this legacy and continued this tradition.

«It is human beings that in a constructive, ethical and morally sustainable manner can create this future world to the best of all humanity. This we must help to shape.»

For my part, I have felt it as an enrichment in my life to be able to take an active part in the cultural developement of Bergen. As our Group has grown and become more international, and Norway has become richer and richer, we have found it natural to also support people and projects in parts of the world that are less fortunate than us.

We can of course be proud of the considerable growth and achievments within the Group during my 60 year period, espesially for creating so many new

During all the 60 years I have been with our Group, we have been involved in charity work. But it all became better orginised when Grieg Foundation was started in Norway in 2002. From then on, GF has owned 25 percent of the Group’s activities. Since this date we have been able to distribute more than 630 million NOK to a multitude of good causes for children and youth including schools and cultural institutions with an emphasis on music and education, medical research and other benevolent projects. We can be proud of this achievment. It comes from hard work and good results from everybody within the Grieg Group.

Opportunities and footprints Grieg Foundation is a small foundation with big ambitions. We look for projects where our support can make a difference and have enduring impact. Our goal is to leave footprints by empowering people and communities.

«Grieg Foundation is a small foundation with big ambitions. Our goal is to leave footprints by empowering people and communities.»

I am proud and humble to continue and lead the philanthropic legacy of my father. I want to take this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to my father, Per Grieg Sr, to the previous Chair, Per Hagelien, and to Åse Karin Pettersen who has skillfully run the secretariat, for their dedication and tireless work. I also want to thank all employees within the Grieg Group. Grieg Foundation continues to grow thanks to the results of the Grieg Group. Children and young people will continue to be our main focus in addition to health, gender equality, music and culture. The last few years, we have also expanded our engagement to climate action and social impact investment. Human dignity rests on an opportunity for everybody to pursue their dreams and use their abilities to create a better world. Everything we do is anchored in our commitment to the sustainable development goals.

27 April 2020, Elna-Kathrine Grieg, new Chair

Covid-19 has changed the world as we know it. As I write this, societies have shut down, borders are closed, and social distancing has been imposed on our way of life. The pandemic affects everyone and everything, but it affects the poor and marginalised the most. Our commitment to equal opportunity will be more important than ever. We will continue to work hard to find and fund projects that will make a difference.

Restoring RS4 Feie – The first rescue boat on the coast of western Norway The Grieg Group has long shipping traditions, and the Grieg Foundation is a proud contributor to preservation and nurture of the rich maritime history in Bergen. RS4 Feie is a beautiful wooden sailing boat that was built in 1893 by the renowned shipbuilder Colin Archer. Feie served as rescue boat on the west coast of Norway until 1905. The Bergen Sailing Club owns the boat. Grieg Foundation has contributed to the restoration. “Feie” will be launched in Bergen in 2020.

“Festspillene”, The Bergen International Festival, is the oldest and most important festival for music and performing arts in Norway. For two weeks in May, there were music, art and theatre indoors and outdoors all over the city. Grieg Foundation funded the outdoor concert stage, “Festspillplassen”, which became a vibrant cultural heart in the city centre. The number of visitors to the outdoor program increased from 24,500 in 2018 to 34,073 in 2019, thanks in large part to the gift from the Grieg Foundation.

In 2019, we initiated an artist-in-residence program at the Bergen National Opera. The scholarship is an opportunity for a talented young opera singer to pursue his or her career by participating in various productions, and to work with top international soloists, directors and conductors. The scholarship is also a gift to the audience who get to know a young talent and rising star. The lyric coloratura soprano, Beate Mordal, is the first Grieg Foundation Artist-in-Residence at Bergen National Opera.

Plastic waste

Matsentralen redistributes surplus food to more than 50 organizations who help disadvantaged people. Grieg Foundation has been an active partner from the start. This year we funded a school programme for all 11- and 12-year old children in the community of Bergen. The school classes visited Matsentralen to learn about sustainability and the importance of reducing food waste.

Plastic waste is a huge and increasing problem that we have to solve. Plastic waste must be removed from nature, and the influx must be stopped and prevented. We supported the project “Plastic hunt, Hordaland” run by Naturvernforbundet, Friends of the Earth, Vestlandet.
