GET TO KNOW AMANDA
Th h The holiday lid season iis ffast approaching and we at Oklahoma’s Own News 9 are preparing for a busy season. As you get ready for the holiday season, we hope you’ll take a minute to get to know our Amanda Taylor a little bit better. Here, she opens up about her past, present and future. John, Midwest City Are you originally from Oklahoma? No, I’m originally from Bloomington, Indiana, and it reminds me of Oklahoma. It’s the same small town feel, the people are genuine, and we get to experience all four seasons. Then I went to school in Florida and my first job was in Wichita Falls, Texas. Next I worked in San Antonio, and then I came to Oklahoma. I consider this home now and it’s nice to be closer to my husband’s family, they’re from Missouri.
Brooke, Cordell Are you married and do you have any kids? I’m married to my best friend Nick and he’s a realtor in town. We don’t have any kids yet. It hasn’t been in God’s plan, but we’re hoping someday it will be. Everybody will definitely know when it happens and you can celebrate with us. For now, we just have our two, furry children. They are very spoiled “kids.”

Sara, Oklahoma City I read online that you have a dog named Sonoma. Where did you get that name? We have William and Sonoma. Sonoma’s name comes from where my husband and I honeymooned, in Sonoma, California, and obviously we have fond memories of the place. And also, I love to cook and one of my favorite places to buy stuff for the kitchen is Williams Sonoma, so hence we have William and Sonoma. Amanda, Weatherford Why did you choose broadcast journalism? When I entered college, I was actually a microbiology major. That didn’t last long. As soon as I realized I had to take chemistry – and lots of it – I made a change. And I should have known I was going to be in broadcast journalism a lot sooner. In elementary school I entered a contest to write a commercial for Tide – and I won! Then in 5th grade I started a club called the “Kid Bifay” (Bifay is Pig Latin for FBI). I would have all my friends over and teach them how to investigate like Nancy Drew. There were little clues like that all through my younger years that pointed to journalism. But it wasn’t until I went to college and took my first speech class and the professor asked me to join the University’s speech and debate team. I did and traveled and competed for 4 years. That’s when I changed my major to journalism and here I am. Jason, Deer Creek What is the most memorable Consumer Watch story you have ever reported on? Oh my goodness, there are so many! I’d have to say that when I got a call from the U.S. Secret Service and they wanted my help; that story went right to the top of my list. I had just exposed a local scam and the Secret Service apparently was after the same guy. They ended up nabbing him and then called me in to testify in federal court. I’ve never been so excited because here’s a story that I saw from the very beginning to the end and because of it, the con man was convicted and is behind bars. I even have the artist’s rendering
sketch of me testifying on my desk as a daily reminder. Megan, Midwest City I know you graduated from the University of Florida. But since you live in Oklahoma, are you a Florida football fan, or Oklahoma football fan? Megan! Are you trying to get me hate mail? Just kidding, but I think it’s a given. I went to the University of Florida, I spent four years there and I have to root for my Gators. But, I do have to say that I cheer equally as loud for OU and OSU – as long as they’re not playing Florida. Kate, Edmond What do you enjoy doing when you are not in front of the camera? I like to do yard work and I like to cook. ook. But let me preface that, I like to o cook, but during the week I just want to fix a quick chicken and stick tick it in the oven and be done with it. I love taking cooking classes. lasses. So that’s the type of cooking ooking I like to do. Yard work and mowing, but I could leave it. I do itt and I even weed eat. It’s t’s kind of my workout. However, I’d rather plant the flowers and tend end the pots, but there here is something very satisfying after you ou get done mowing everything verything looks so nice!
Jeri, Moore As a reporter, have you ever come across a story that was too difficult to report? I think the hardest stories for me to report on are ones that involve children who’ve been abused. Those break my heart. They get to me because my Dad lived his first nine years in and out of abusive foster homes before being adopted. I’ve heard some awful stories. But my grandparents were sent from above and saved him – they’re absolutely wonderful people! My Dad turned out to be an amazing man, so it just goes to show that a good adoptive family can change a kid’s life. But when I hear stories like those of abuse, I cannot fathom how people can do that. So those are the tough ones.

WINTER 2010
GET TO KNOW STAN Oklahoma’s Own News 9 is more than a workplace; it’s a home away from home for us. We would like for you to get to know the people that come into your home day after day. Stan Miller, one of the newest members of the News 9 family, opens up as he answers your questions. Jason, Shawnee Where did you grow up and go to school? I grew up in Midwest City and went to Midwest City High School. After that, I was a radio and television major at UCO, it was called Central State University then. Sara, OKC Do you miss California? Do you love Oklahoma? I miss the ocean, but I came back because I do love Oklahoma, and I missed the wide open spaces and the friendly people. Richard, McLoud Why did you move back to Oklahoma? I guess it’s the old saying, “You can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy.” Oklahoma has always been my home, and I felt that it was time to get back to my roots and be closer to my family. Trish, Yukon Are you scared to go though tornado season? Tornadoes don’t scare me nearly as much as earthquakes do, and I went through several very scary earthquakes. At least here, Gary “Twister” England lets me know what to expect well ahead of time!
Taylor, OKC I heard you were in the movie “Bad Boys”, how did you manage that and did you enjoy it? Yes, I played a very short role in “Bad Boys.” I got a phone call out of the blue one day from the movie’s director Michael Bay asking me if I would like a role in the film. He said he had seen me anchor the news and would like me to play that role in his movie. I am still getting royalties to this day, and that movie was released in, I believe, 1994. I had a lot more hair then! Dillon, Yukon What do you like to do in your spare time? I like to spend time with my family, explore Oklahoma’s back roads on my Harley, bass fish, golf, watch Sooner football games and Thunder games. Katy, Mustang Are you married and do you have kids? I have been married for 22 years and have three children, all grown. Bobby, Enid What kind of motorcycle do you ride? I ride a Harley Davidson Electra Glide Ultra. So far my longest trip was 1,352 miles from Bozeman, Montana to Edmond in 2 days. Brock, Edmond What made you want to be a reporter? I actually always wanted to do sports, but had an opportunity early in my career to anchor the news so I took it and never looked back.

winter wea weather her tips tip In Oklahoma we’re pretty good at handling bad weather. But here at Oklahoma’s Own News 9 we want to offer a few extra suggestions to ensure everyone is safe and warm this winter season. During the bitter cold times in Oklahoma, when the arctic barn door is wide open, Chief Meteorologist Gary England keeps you advised on winter weather safety tips: • Keep a good supply of rock salt and sand (kitty litter can be substituted for sand) to help with keeping your walkways safe. • Add a snow shovel to your disaster supply kit at home for when the snow is heavy. • Store a good supply of wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove in case gas or electricity is lost and it’s a two dog night! • Be sure to winterize your home for a Friday night in the big town by cleaning the gutters, trimming away trees, and fixing roof leaks. • Remember to keep faucets dripping during periods of cold weather to keep pipes from freezing. • In case a pipe does burst, have someone teach you how to turn off the water valves. • Have a mechanic do a winter weather safety check for your car to keep you protected. • Keep your fuel levels as full as possible, at least half a tank, in case its hard to get to a gas station. • Place an emergency kit in your car. • Jump back Loretta! Before you venture outside, dress in warm layers with the outer layer being water repellent and carry gloves and a hat with you. • Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs when you are outside. • Please check on neighbors, friends, family and the elderly so that we can keep all Oklahomans safe this winter. For a complete list of winter weather tips, kits, and more please go to News9.com/winterweather. And during winter storms and extreme cold, stay with News 9’s Gary England…we’ll keep you advised.
