eep! Beep! Beep! I turn off one of my many alarms so I can go back to sleep for just a couple more minutes. I’m tired from staying up til 1:00 a.m. to finish homework. From essays, projects and hot gluing things, to painting and making final touches on PowerPoints - what’s sleep anyway? I lay back down - not that it will make me less tired, but I cherish my last two minutes. As my second alarm goes off, I look at my celling and think to myself, “If the sun isn’t up why should I be?” I start to think about what would happen if I just miss one day. No one will really notice, right? But then I realize one day could put me ten years behind, so when my second alarm goes off, I finally get up. I roll out of bed, taking my cover with me, walking around my house looking like a bat. I take my computer off the charger and then put it in my backpack. I grab my art projects and put them by the
door so I don’t forget them. I get dressed, brush my teeth, then try to clean up my stuff from my project. I just blink and minutes have passed - I’m almost late for the bus! I throw some snacks in my bag to last me throughout the day. I sprint to the bus stop with one arm full of art projects and the other with my phone, only to realize my bus isn’t even here yet! Every day when I get on the bus I pray for my mom, my sister and other people. I pray their day goes well and that they are safe. The bus pulls up to the school. I get breakfast and head straight to the library to print stuff off and relax before the day starts. I ask the librarian if it’s an A day or a B day—it’s an A day, so I head to my first block: Personal Finance. I normally listen to the teacher explain how to do the work, but then go to the Learning Lab because I work faster in there and get the help I need. I go to Art next block with Ms. Sulzen. I love that class! Art is my favorite, and she’s re-
ally nice. We normally do class projects together, then work on our own stuff for our portfolio. For Tonka Time, I go to my second art class of the day - 3D Art - to finish up my projects while I listen to music. During lunch I just stay in my art class to finish my clay project because in takes so long to make. Math is next, and normally my work is already almost finished in there so I catch up on work from other classes because I don’t like homework. Then the bell rings and it’s time to get home. Finally, I can go back to sleep…or so I thought! My house is a mess, so I have to clean it up before my mom gets home. I eat something only to realize I forgot to do my project that’s due tomorrow for B day, but it’s already 9:00 p.m.! Man, I just love school—psych! Just kidding. I can’t wait till I graduate.

Katherine Dona 6:30 a.m. I hit snooze. I know
I’ll be rushed when I get up for school. 7:00 a.m. I don’t have the worst attitude ever about things, but when I do it’s because of high school (and work). I only have 3 more weeks left of it. 7:38 a.m. I’ve been getting ready, and as I check the clock, I’m not surprised to see that class starts in five minutes. For a second, I freak out, but then I remember I’m not tardy until 7:50. 7:40 a.m. Still getting ready. 7:47 a.m. I’m walking up to the school’s main entrance, smelling the spring air. I think about how I’ll never walk this early in the morning into a high school again.
I look behind me and hold the door for a bit like I always do. Some people kindly say, “Thank you.” To others, it was the wind that held the door open for them. 10:00 a.m. I am in second block, calculating in my head. Not math, but how much more time until the school day is over. 10:39 a.m. I am packing up, thinking about how grateful I am for Tonka Time. I should stop procrastinating. 11:30 a.m. I walked into third block. All of the white walls, cold air, and trying in math either gives me a headache or makes me sleepy every class period. This block is the one that seems so long. 12:51 p.m. The moment I feel
free. I walk out of AP Statistics, ready for my brain to relax and have some laughs at lunch. 1:20: I am (not) ready for fourth block, sitting in my chair. I almost fall asleep in this stuffy room, but the bell rings eventually. 2:42 p.m. I rush to get home, but people are cutting me off as if they don’t have a care in the world about their own car, let alone somebody else’s.

:50-8:00: I walk into school just thinking about my wrestling match tonight. I have to win this, but I am four pounds over. I really hope Mrs. Rosario lets me run because I can’t lose this meet; I am a captain, I can’t mess up. When I get to her room, I ask, “Hey, Mrs. Rosario, can I go downstairs and run please? I have a meet tonight.” She says, “Yeah, go ahead.” Wow I can’t believe she’s letting me skip to go work out--but I can see why, because her son wrestles, too. 9:00: I am so tired I don’t want to do anything anymore. I’m hungry. I’m just done. But then I hear my phone ring. I already know who it is and I am so glad because she puts all the joy, strength, and confidence in me. I answer with, “Hey, Babe wassup?”
She says, “Hey, Baby. How much you got to lose?” “I am 4 pounds over, Baby. I am tired. I just want to give up on everything” But she never lets me. She keeps me going. So, I get my butt up and I finish what I started. I get down to my weight and I can rest for the rest of the day. This is good. 12:42: I walk to the lunch room, mad I can’t eat, but I just grab a PB&J and some chips so I can save them for after weigh-ins. 1:00: I am walking down to the locker room. Time to get focused. Time to get all the distractions out of my head. I look at pictures of my baby and I to just remind me of how great my life is. I just forget about being hungry and I just forget about everything-because win or lose, I’m still a champ in her eyes.
14 A day in the life
Mackenzie Brenneman Every morning, I wake up excited. Ex-
cited for what you say? Band. On A days, I wake up a little earlier so I can make it on time for the 7th grade band class. That’s where I help Mr. Barrier teach the class by conducting the warm-ups. They’re a rowdy bunch, but I think they’re warming up to me. From there, I try my best to make it to Tonka on time, but that rarely happens. My second block is College French III, where we talk about French things. Currently, I’m making a project about the Paris Catacombs. I spend most of my Tonka Times in the band room, preparing myself for State. For State, I’m playing two complex solos. There, I will be judged by people, who will give me a rating. When I’m not practicing for my state solo, I’m probably goofing off with my friends around the band room. Once Tonka Time ends, it’s time for actual band class, where we sit in concert arcs, rehearsing for the upcoming concert. The music our director picks out is challeng-
ing. It’s challenging enough to push us to become better, but not too hard that we can’t play it. Band class usually starts out with tuning to the first chair clarinet, then we do our regular warm-ups. From there, we rehearse our songs, picking out the smallest details to fix. Details could be tiny articulations, to large crescendos throughout the measures. Whenever I get the chance, I try my best to help the flutes through whatever problem they face. It’s what a good section leader and drum major would do. When lunch comes around, some of us stick around in the band room to have more after-class fun. 4th block is when I go around to the Woods room to finish up my project I’ve been working on the entire school year: two adirondack chairs to place by my fire pit. Once the final bell rings, I leave to go home and practice, that is, if I don’t have an after school band thing to go to.

Michael Beckwith Once you have more free time,
sleep is fantastic. I get up without any noises or alarms, just to the sound of wind whistling through the trees and birds chirping, for like half of the time. It’s about 7:308:00a.m. and I get up and make some breakfast, eggs and oatmeal. I relax for a bit while I eat, then do some stretches and get ready for my run at about 9am. I run around the park by my house and get back about 45 minutes later. I hop in the shower and get ready for my day by about 10:30am. I then head to the Northland Career Center for my Health Sciences classes by about 11:30a.m. and get out around 2:00p.m.. The rest of the day I have for homework and whatever else I want. A day in the life of a Senior is really relaxing. I get the choose what I want to do with all of my free time. I try to stay determined to keep up with my plans for college and the future in general. At
times I feel like it’s too easy, so I try to stay involved, by either interning at hospitals to try and get ahead in my radiology career. I also try to save up extra money for my college life. Sometimes it gets stressful because I don’t know if I’m doing enough for college and what it has in store for me, but with NCC teaching me and my interning at hospitals and hopefully building long lasting connections for the future. That’s my day in the life of a senior, on A days. My alarm is luckily pretty relaxing so it’s not too bad, but it still always aches my soul. The longer I hear it the more it feels like it deteriorate energy, sucking the life out of me. I shoot out of my bed, that’s what I do now to be awake, and surprisingly I can convince myself to do it. These day’s I have college algebra and AP Bio, along with my NCC Health Science Classes. It’s easy, most of the time, but I have to get up early,
which sucks, but I get enough sleep so it’s fine. I was able to take calculus by junior year, which I decided to not, since it was unnecessary, since all I needed was college algebra, but due to some issues I wasn’t able to take it last year. Then AP Bio I need to take anyways, so might as well do it now. I spend more time doing homework on these days, mainly math. The rest is usually work, I’m a waiter so I can keep my schedule flexible with my work days usually being on B days. Since I have no school the next day until 11a.m. I can always stay on top of school and maintain a healthy lifestyle. This year really tested my determination, but that’s the best part. in college I’ll have more “free” time but that’s the best time to do homework and study.
