WELCOME TO GRIFFIN Griffin Theatre Company is Australia’s new writing theatre. We develop and stage the best Australian stories, for the widest possible audience. For more than 30 years, the Griffin mission has been to bring our audiences the highest standards of theatrical craft. We also have a passion for developing Australian talent, with many of our nation’s most celebrated artists starting their professional careers with us. Griffin produces an annual subscription season of four to five Main Season shows by Australian playwrights, and co-presents a season of new work with leading independent artists. We also support artists through professional development opportunities, including artist residencies and masterclasses. Our home is the historic SBW Stables Theatre, a thriving cultural hub and Sydney’s most intimate and persuasive space for actors and audiences to meet. We hope to see you here soon.

A MESSAGE FROM LEE Who we are, who we were and who we want to be – this is our story and the story of Griffin in 2014. Four extraordinary plays in our Main Season show us our best and our worst selves, and four Griffin Independent shows challenge our conventions and convictions. Two new adventures take us to new places, new stories and new audiences that are central to the future lifeblood of the company. The works will speak for themselves as they generate and frame a dialogue around the most important issues of our day. What I must speak of is the astonishing breadth and depth of our playwriting culture. We have a heritage of great playwriting in this country. As our revival of Sydney’s greatest ‘new classic’ suggests, I hope this season is a celebration of the playwright’s craft, and the idea that every season Griffin produces is an investment in the classics that will be written and performed in the future of this theatre. If this season has a unifying idea, apart from my shameless love of each of the plays, it is my shameless love of this shameless city and all the possibilities it offers to the artists who fight to find a home in it. The welcome that Sydney extends to all Australians is the same welcome that Griffin extends to all Australian playwrights. On our small Kings Cross stage you will discover the stories of this city, this country and the world as we relate to it now. Even as our writers scrutinise the forces that drive us apart, Griffin celebrates the power of storytelling to bind us in the future we imagine together. One hundred years from now, Sydney may well be a mega-city of 80 million, but there will still be 105 seats wrapped around the Griffin stage, where our greatgreat-grandkids will come to see stories about who they are and where they are going. They will know where they have come from because some of the plays in the 2014 season will stand the test of time and speak to them of their ancestors. Of us. Lee Lewis Artistic Director

Griffin Theatre Company presents the world premiere of

JUMP FOR JORDAN By Donna Abela 14 February-29 March “It’s like SBS in there. Aunt Azza comes out of customs, and mum transforms. Ultra Arab. Instantaneous. One minute she’s cooking Frank steak and chips, next thing she’s asking me where to buy goat. Frank won’t eat goat.” Aspiring archaeologist Lola left home when she was only 20, much to the shame of her traditional Jordanian mother. Six years later, losing sleep and petrified by the judgement of her visiting ‘mad Arab’ Aunty Azza, Lola is forced to lie about her life, her career and the existence of her Aussie partner. Worst of all is the fear that she’s also lying to herself. Looking deep into the heart of Sydney and beyond, Jump for Jordan unpacks the experience common to countless second-generation Australians of being caught between two cultures. Sifting through shifting layers of past and present, farce and fantasy, it’s one woman’s mad, messy excavation of her own history, and her attempt to piece together the broken bits of her identity. Donna Abela’s Jump for Jordan took out the Griffin Award in 2013, wowing the judges with its vitality and ambition. This world premiere production is directed by Griffin Studio director Iain Sinclair. Director Iain Sinclair

Griffin Theatre Company and Perth Theatre Company present the world premiere of

EIGHT GIGABYTES OF HARDCORE PORNOGRAPHY By Declan Greene 2 May-14 June “Last week a man slept in my house. I am sure he has a wife. The skin around his ring finger is indented. And there was a number in his phone under ‘Wife’.” They met online. She’s a nurse in her forties, brats for kids, trapped in a loop of catastrophic debt. He’s in IT, miserably married and trapped in his own loop of nightly porn-trawling. Both of them crave something else – but not necessarily each other. Take the plunge into the Too-Much-Information Age. Funny and fiercely written, Eight Gigabytes of Hardcore Pornography is a deceptively compassionate cringe-comedy of mid-life loneliness, hidden zip folders and barely concealed desperation. The terrific mind and nimble fingers of playwright Declan Greene have crafted an astonishing new work. Eight Gigabytes of Hardcore Pornography is directed and brought to vivid, sweaty life by Griffin’s own Lee Lewis. Griffin Theatre Company and Malthouse Theatre present the world premiere of

UGLY MUGS By Peta Brady 18 July-23 August “Everybody’s capable of anything. If they think it. They can do it.” A girl on a footy field cops a blow to the head and her bag is stolen. A teenage boy grapples with his role in a disturbing event. A woman relives a nightmare while her doctor looks on. None of them saw it coming. None of them were ready for what happened next. Taking its title from the name sex workers use for aggressive clients, Peta Brady’s Ugly Mugs emerged from a Melbourne shocked by violence against women and interrogates the culture of abuse lurking in the shadows of every Australian city. Daring, provocative and topical, it asks complex questions about vulnerability and responsibility. Marion Potts returns to Griffin to direct this world premiere co-production with Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre. Director Marion Potts Designer Michael Hankin Lighting Designer Lucy Birkinshaw With Peta Brady Previews 18, 19, 21, 22 July Season 25 July – 23 August Performance Times Monday – Friday 7pm Saturday 2pm and 7pm Subscriber Q&A after the performance on 5 August

Griffin Theatre Company presents

EMERALD CITY By David Williamson 17 October-6 December “What other city in the world could offer a view like this?” “Rio.” Welcome to the glittering jewel of that other Oz. Fading screenwriter Colin is not long in Sydney before he’s seduced by its obsession with success. Teaming up with well-connected hack writer Mike, Colin finds himself in a tug of war between artistic ambition and big bucks. Fame and fortune – not to mention Mike's criminally hot girlfriend – are up for grabs. Part love letter, part hate mail to the harbour city, Emerald City is one of the best works by Australian theatre’s most beloved craftsman and commentator, David Williamson. Three decades after it was written, it still captures the ballsy spirit of the ’80s and retains its skewering sharpness – a panoramic view of the city that’s always prized beauty over brains. In 2014, Griffin gives Emerald City the shameless revival it’s been crying out for. Lee Lewis dusts off her shoulder pads to direct. Special Event Griffin Theatre Company and Performance 4a, in association with Carriageworks and Sydney Festival, present

THE SERPENT’S TABLE 24-27 January “A dish of bitter melon soup is a dish of reconciliation. When we quarrel, we cannot speak the words ‘I am sorry’ – we give this bittersweet soup instead.” The Serpent’s Table is a theatrical and culinary experience like no other. Combining performance, food and installation, five storytellers reveal the secrets of dishes that are significant in their lives and share compelling stories of family, culture, loss, conflict and celebration. Salty, sweet, sour and bitter tales from the heart are infused into each dish, as the audience is invited to taste the experiences and memories that have just been revealed. A crack team of Asian-Australian artists come together with some of our most inventive cooks and restaurateurs, including Adam Liaw (MasterChef, Destination Flavour) and Pauline Nguyen (Secrets of the Red Lantern), to immerse audiences in a multi-sensory environment installed at Carriageworks. Told with candour, emotion and humour, The Serpent’s Table is designed for an intimate audience of only 30 people, who will share in this unforgettable farewell to the Year of the Snake. Ticketing We have a limited number of tickets available exclusively for Griffin subscribers before they go on sale through Sydney Festival. Please register your interest for 1 or 2 tickets on the booking form or online by 23 September. All tickets are $70. School Holiday Season Griffin Theatre Company presents

THE WITCHES By Roald Dahl Adapted from the stage play by David Wood 24 SEPTEMBER-5 OCTOBER “Witches? With silly black hats and cloaks riding on broomsticks? No. They’re for fairy tales. Very tame. I’m talking of real witches.” When one little boy unwittingly stumbles into the annual meeting of witches, he hears their nasty plan to get rid of all the children in the world – by turning them into mice! It’s going to take smarts and sneakiness to stop them and not get squished in the process. Think you can outwit a witch and outrun a mouse? Then grab a seat in the front row for The Witches, bursting onto the Griffin stage as a mind-boggling and madcap one-man show. Brave boys and girls, rat-racers and retirees are in for a wicked and wonderful time. Lucas Jervies directs this bubbling concoction, based on David Wood’s adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, with Guy Edmonds running amok in a virtuosic physical performance. It’s Griffin at its most mischievous, just in time for the school holidays. Director Lucas Jervies Designer Hugh O’Connor Lighting Designer Sian James-Holland Dramaturg Chris Summers With Guy Edmonds The Witches was originally produced at NIDA in 2012 and co-designed by Becky-Dee Trevenen and Hugh O’Connor. Building our future voice

Griffin is the home of the Australian voice. Our job now is to turn up the volume of that voice. As Australian playwrights speak to the world, what was once a local theatre project now has an international imperative.

The Griffin Fund is a new initiative focusing on education programs, leadership pathways for artists, touring Griffin-produced productions and international exchange opportunities. It is an investment in the future prospects of the company and the artists we work with. Donations to the Fund are pledged for a three-year period towards the following programs: Griffin Education expands the activities and programs we offer young people to engage with professional theatre and artists. Griffin is developing new work for families, exciting new partnerships with schools and students, and growing our already successful Griffin Ambassadors program. Griffin Leadership Pathways provides professional development opportunities for artists and trains the leaders of our future. Griffin offers a variety of development programs such as the Griffin Studio and Story Lab, which provide skills development, mentorship and industry networks. New initiatives include the Griffin Artistic Leadership Program, which supports the development of artists from diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds, and an exchange program with like-minded new writing theatres around the world.

Griffin Global is an initiative to build a sustainable national touring model to expand the company’s audience and reach. We are also interested in creating opportunities for Australian artists to build a greater understanding of the relationship between Australian and international arts practice. More information about The Griffin Fund Please visit griffintheatre.com.au/support-us or contact the Development Manager at philanthropy@griffintheatre.com.au.

philanthropy

Griffin is the only professional theatre company dedicated to new Australian writing and we are deeply proud of our achievements over the past three decades. We are passionate about nurturing Australian artists and have developed a range of annual programs to foster career pathways for writers, directors and actors. We are committed to exposing young people and students to diverse Australian stories and invite charity and community groups into our theatre space to see Main Season productions for free. To do all this we rely on the vital support of our donors and supporters.

We are a not-for-profit organisation and, with production income covering only 35% of our operating costs, you can play a crucial role in what we can achieve at Griffin both on and off the stage. All donations over $2.00 are tax deductible. You can donate when you subscribe to the 2014 Season. Alternatively, you can give our Development Manager a call on (02) 9332 1052 or email philanthropy@griffintheatre.com.au. To our current donors – we thank you. To those who are thinking of supporting Griffin, please join us on this journey to bring Australian stories to the stage.

The intimacy of the SBW Stables Theatre offers the opportunity to be seated very close to the stage and we are more than happy to reserve seats to enable the best possible experience at Griffin for those with limited mobility, vision impairment or hearing impairment. We regret however that the historic SBW Stables Theatre does present some challenges to people with limited mobility and is not wheelchair accessible. Get emotional This is the mandate of the playwright. It’s what she demands of herself and her audience. Feel something. Be moved. Gasp for air. Otherwise, what’s it all for?

to production posters and landing pages. It’s been five years, and we still get emotional.

No great piece of art is created without emotion. All great pieces of art elicit emotion, and Griffin does nothing but showcase great, emotional art.

We like to get emotional. We believe brands have the opportunity to provoke and inspire the same way art does. We feed off that belief. It motivates us, frustrates us, liberates us and pushes us to create great work.

It’s part of their belief in the raw, in the intimate and the groundbreaking. You can feel the intensity in each production, each performance, and even in the pages you’re holding right now.

If a brand leaves it all out there, heart on the sleeve: audiences will feel it. Connections will form. Word of mouth will spread. People will come back.

Whether through stark photography, austere type treatments or unconventional word choices, our Interbrand team relishes each opportunity to express Griffin’s personality – from this brochure,

It’s that emotion that keeps people coming back to Griffin. So, let’s raise a rousing glass to another tearful, hilarious, angry, provocative, disturbing and guaranteed amazing season.
