A MESSAGE FROM SAM Welcome to 2013 – my third and final season at Griffin. This year celebrates the unique nature of the SBW Stables Theatre. All four shows in the Main Season do things you can only do in a theatre. More importantly, they do things you can only do in our theatre. Each of the shows tackles its content in a way that is exhilaratingly imaginative, but also tailored to the beautiful idiosyncrasy of our space. If the plays are linked by their big imaginations, they are also linked by their big ideas. Griffin has always been the place to wrestle with topical and timeless themes, and this year is no exception. Our 2013 Main Season engages with how little we sometimes know those closest to us, the intersection of classical mythology and contemporary life, the nature of dependence, and the lingering spectre of post-traumatic stress disorder. But if there are continuities and through-lines, 2013 is – as we always like it to be – a carefully structured series of distinct experiences. Indeed, in genre terms, the 2013 Main Season is a perfectly proportioned portfolio – a thriller, a rom-com, a satire and a classic period piece. Speaking of mixed bags, you couldn’t get more richly varied than our (for the first time) all Australian 2013 Independent Season. We have: a theatricalisation of masculinity via an adaptation of short stories; an excavation of contemporary loneliness via a magic trick; an immersion into teenage intensity via poetry; a NSW coastal town via outer space; and Tennessee Williams via Christmas panto drag.

E L L T E

Which brings us to the end of 2013. It has been a delight and a privilege to work for this most treasured of Australian theatre companies. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my time here. I look forward to the future and to coming back to our beautiful, unique theatre space – as an artist and especially as an audience member. Love, Sam Sam Strong Artistic Director

DREAMS IN WHITE BY DUNCAN GRAHAM 8 FEBRUARY-23 MARCH

‘But what’s going on in his head… That’s what actually makes me feel sick. That’s where the betrayal is. In that gap. That unknowable, untraceable gap.’ When wealthy property developer Michael Devine goes missing, his wife Anne and daughter Amy fear the worst. As the pieces of Michael’s disappearance start falling into place, the picture reveals a scandalous secret. On the other side of town, Paula and Gary Anderson have an unwanted visitor. Regretting ever having let Ray Wimple creep into their lives, they’re now stuck with his unwelcome and insistent attention. When these two very different worlds collide, one fateful event will transform the lives of both families forever. Inspired by true events, Dreams in White is a gripping thriller of double lives and urban alienation. It marks the first writer/director collaboration to emerge from the Griffin Studio, uniting the muscular language of Duncan Graham (Cut, Ollie and the Minotaur) with the dynamic direction of Tanya Goldberg (Way To Heaven, The Story of Mary MacLane by Herself). THE BULL, THE MOON AND THE CORONET OF STARS BY VAN BADHAM 2 MAY-8 JUNE

‘One day she decided to wear the blue dress. It wasn’t provocative. He was married.’ Alone in the museum, in the dark, Marion unravels a ball of string so Michael can venture into a mystery. In recent weeks, strange stirrings have haunted the ancient relics and rumours of a monster abound. Michael finds his way back to her and to an impossible situation. Marion flees and finds herself the prim centre of an over-sexed septuagenarian art group at a seaside resort. Here, Marion is infuriated by Mark, a wayward sommelier with an eye for the ladies, determined to disrupt her lessons and her life. Whimsical, sensual and charmingly humorous, The Bull, the Moon and the Coronet of Stars is a love story of mythic proportions. It will lure you into an orgy of antiquity, cupcakes and beachside frivolity. Award-winning playwright Van Badham is joined by Griffin Associate Director Lee Lewis (Silent Disco, A Hoax) for this delightfully debaucherous fairytale for adults. ‘I wanna wear jeans, go to the loo. Guess I wanna be a human being.’ Arty is huge. Ginormous. Morbidly and grossly obese, he’s in need of a gastric bypass to save his life. At over 400 kilos, he’s the world’s fattest teenager. Arty is also being followed by a reality TV crew. Will he lose the kilos needed to have the op? Will he survive to eat another cream puff? Will Louise, his Pathways-to-Work officer, transform his life in ways he never imagined?

I O N E D E P U F F

Unapologetically satiric, Beached is also the moving story of a man imprisoned in his own body. It lays bare the mercenary nature of reality TV, and turns the microscope on society’s insatiable appetite for human misery. Beached won the 2011 Patrick White Playwrights’ Award and was shortlisted for the 2011 Griffin Award. It pairs the razor sharp wit of Melissa Bubnic with the imaginative direction of Shannon Murphy (This Year’s Ashes, Porn.Cake). Director Shannon Murphy

THE FLOATING WORLD BY JOHN ROMERIL 4 OCTOBER-16 NOVEMBER

W S

‘A rice diet. Plain bloody rice. They paid us five cents a day and we bought eggs with it. If it wasn’t for those eggs, only officers would have come back alive.’ Les and Irene are celebrating their wedding anniversary. Gifted with the holiday of a lifetime, they set sail on the Women’s Weekly Cherry Blossom Cruise bound for the cultural mysteries of Japan. But amongst the sun hats, theme nights and piña coladas Les, a former WWII prisoner of war, soon finds himself confronted by old diggers, enemies and tormented memories. As the cruise ship floats closer towards its destination, Les’ grip on reality floats ever further away. An electrifying descent into one man’s wartime nightmare, The Floating World is a resonating tale of the long-lasting effects of war and the ugly world of xenophobic Australia. Following the success of his sold-out productions of Speaking in Tongues and The Boys, Sam Strong returns to the Griffin fold to direct this neglected Australian classic, last staged at the Stables in 1975 and heralded as an ‘unruly masterpiece’. RUST AND BONE BY CALEB LEWIS FROM THE SHORT STORIES BY CRAIG DAVIDSON 9 JANUARY-2 FEBRUARY ‘One pure thought loops through my fritzing, blown-apart brain: so this is fatherhood.’ A crippled boxer fights on to atone for past sins. A young killer whale trainer comes face to face with death. And a dog fighter discovers fatherhood in the most unexpected of places. Three men, three interwoven stories. Each has his will tested beyond belief in this potent exploration of masculinity at its most fragile and brutal. Adapted by award-winning playwright Caleb Lewis, from the short stories by Canadian writer Craig Davidson, Rust and Bone brings the talents of exciting Adelaide director Corey McMahon to Sydney. GIRL IN TAN BOOTS BY TAHLI CORIN 27 MARCH-20 APRIL ‘Tan Boots: To the girl in tan boots who always gets on at St Leonards, you are my angel of the morning. My daily fix of heaven. Man in Grey Suit.’ Hannah is 32, single and slightly overweight. Hannah has eczema and lives alone with a cat named Cupid. Hannah reads the love messages in the commuter magazine religiously, hoping one day, one day, there will be one just for her. But when Hannah goes missing while waiting for a mystery man at a Sydney train station, her friends and family are left to question whether their actions played a part. Meanwhile, the investigating detective is discovering just how easy it is to disappear when no one is looking for you. Girl In Tan Boots is a delicate and funny play about love, loneliness and the struggle to stay visible in a big, busy city. It marks the first SBW Stables Theatre appearance for Griffin Studio playwright Tahli Corin and director Susanna Dowling (The Kiss). THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE BY VIVIENNE WALSHE 19 JUNE-13 JULY ‘She’s a bomb remember tick tick tick.’ Hardened from a life filled with bullies, dead-beat boyfriends and no sense of hope, Chloe uses her sexuality as her armour and her weapon. Chris’s sexuality is utterly under-used. Always on the wrong side of cool, he’s living a very different version of hell. But when ‘Odd Boy’ Chris meets ‘Chloe from the Underworld’, an intense connection is formed. Suddenly, a different life seems possible. Winner of the 2012 Griffin Award, This is Where We Live is a love story that conjures Orpheus leading his Eurydice out from the underworld of small town hell. Francesca Smith unleashes Vivienne Walshe’s unique poetic language in this vivid, dark and inventive new Australian play.

RETURN TO EARTH BY LALLY KATZ 4-28 SEPTEMBER ‘You’re doing so great Angel. Did you chew when you were gone?’ When prodigal daughter Alice returns to the sleepy seaside town of Tathra, she’s so out of touch with reality and social mores that she can’t even remember how to eat. But with a quest to do what’s right - fall in love and have a baby - Alice has the local mechanic firmly in her sights. Frightfully cheerful, her parents are determined to gloss over the missing years, but her brother and former best friend are not so quick to forgive. Where has Alice been; and why does she hold the key to their happiness? Return to Earth is a touching and hilarious story about family, sacrifice and re-connecting with the world. Former Griffin Studio resident director Paige Rattray (The Sea Project) enters the highly imaginative world of award-winning playwright Lally Katz (Smashed, Neighbourhood Watch) for this wonderfully unconventional play. SUMMERTIME IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN CREATED BY ASH FLANDERS AND DECLAN GREENE 20 NOVEMBER-14 DECEMBER ‘The South will fall, and so will her pride. ...In the greatest love story ever told.’ Georgia. 1861. A faded Southern belle returns to the family plantation after ten years away. But where has she been? Why did she run? And what secrets are buried in the ol’ greenhouse? Fantastically melodramatic, at times obscene, and definitely outrageous, Summertime in the Garden of Eden is an epic story of love, betrayal and murder in the spirit of Gone With The Wind. Sisters Grimm have been happily staining the Melbourne Fringe for years. Now Sydney gets a taste of their biggest hit, which completely sold out its premiere season (in a suburban garage). Funny, chaotic, brilliant - it’s as close as you’ll get to a Christmas panto at Griffin. ***** ‘There really is only one show that ought to be mandatory...just see it.’ — TimeOut (Melbourne) Producer Daniel Clarke Set Designers Sisters Grimm Marg Horwell Lighting Designer Katie Sfetkidis With Olympia Bukkakis Agent Cleave Genevieve Giuffre Peter Paltos Previews 20, 21 November Season 23 November – 14 December

GRIFFIN STUDIO

The Studio is a year-long residency program that aims to establish clear career pathways for artists and to further contribute to the canon of great Australian plays developed and staged at Griffin. It’s an invaluable experience that brings the country’s most talented writers and directors together to hone their craft, gain vital experience inside a company and establish new collaborations. Most importantly, our Studio artists will be creating work for the Griffin (and the Australian) stage. In 2013, the work of three Studio artists will feature in our Main and Independent seasons, Duncan Graham’s Dreams in White directed by Tanya Goldberg and Tahli Corin’s Girl In Tan Boots. The Griffin Studio is made possible by the generous support of our Studio Donors. To find out more, see page 27.

It’s been an amazing year for Griffin. Not only are we producing some of the most ambitious artist development programs, we’ve also had record attendances and subscriptions.

Every contribution makes a difference, and all donations over $2.00 are taxdeductible. You can donate when you subscribe to the 2013 Season (see page 25) or give our Development Manager a call on (02) 9332 1052 or email philanthropy@griffintheatre.com.au

PHIL ANTH ROPY But despite these achievements, Box Office covers only 33% of our operating costs and the generous support of private donors continues to play a vital role in Griffin’s activities and growth. Quite simply, it’s our donors that enable us to develop and stage the best new Australian stories.

We couldn’t do it without you. Thank you to our current donors, we’re hugely grateful for your support.

By contributing to Griffin you’re supporting the development of Australian talent and new writing. For example, your support enables a playwright to develop their work through the Griffin Studio (see page 21 for more info) or the commissioning of a new work for the stage.

Renowned for its vivid storytelling and intimate theatre experience, Griffin Theatre Company is home to productions that are a serum for the senses.

With the love of the theatre and all that surrounds it, what better way to engage and attract than to extend the breadth of the stage?

Even before the production starts, the foyer comes alive with its own performances that play to the production in new and absorbing ways. Be it artistic works or ushers cast as characters from the play, our engagement begins before we take our seats.

In retail stores around the world, the theatre of the experience lives beyond the product. It’s the anticipation as you approach the storefront, the sound of the music as you walk through the door, the touch of the packaging, the savvy smile of the consultant, the knowledge of something special, something that stands apart. All of which amounts to an enriching experience, and one that extends beyond the mere purchase of the product.

Then as the lights dim, the performance itself sparks our senses, flicked like switches, one after the other. We hear it in the tone of the narrator’s voice, we see it in the composition of the stage, we sense it in the shape, scent and sound of every prop. Every detail studiously works to bring the written word to life, and as the sound reverberates through the theatre to a whisper in our ear, as the lighting reveals emotions from another time and place, a new world is formed before our eyes. Offering such a heightened experience at every opportunity is pivotal to the stagecraft of Griffin Theatre Company.

At Interbrand, creating these experiences is an extension of the brand itself, just as creating productions is an extension of the play. The imagery matches the language, visual and verbal cues trigger one another, sound dances in the light, and something special comes to life and touches you in ways you didn’t expect. The best performances capture our senses and keep us coming back for more. Time and time again, one season after another.

And so too when it comes to staging brands and the accompanying performances that today’s consumers demand and relish. From the shop floor to the digital screen, new experiences are now just a click away. We have to work in new and different ways to create the right environments to appeal to our audiences’ senses. And, in ways that extend beyond the touch of the button.
