PRESIDENT'S WELCOME SABRENE BEN DEKHIL Hello all! Thank you for taking the time to read Griffith University Law Society’s Clerkship Guide for 2020. I would first like to take this opportunity to thank Ashurst for being our Diamond Sponsor for this years’ guide. I would also like to thank all our other sponsors for their ongoing support who not only made this guide possible, but facilitate a wide array of enriching programs and events throughout the year for our students. Through these initiatives, we are able to support the professional development of students as you navigate to find the careers path best suited to you. Clerkships are an invaluable opportunity to gain legal experience, build your skills and foster professional networks. You will also be provided with the opportunity to apply for graduate programs with the firms you have clerked at. We understand that applying for clerkships is competitive and can be a stressful process, which is why we have prepared this Clerkship Guide to help you along the way. The firm profiles provide you with insights to each firms’ values and the qualities they look for in clerks and graduates. During this stressful time, 2020 has brought about additional challenges with COVID-19 and changes to university operation. Please remember to look after yourself during this difficult time; as always, GULS is here to support you during this period. It is also important to remember that there are many paths to success. Finally, I would like to thank and acknowledge the hard work of the wonderful committee members who made this publication possible; particularly Samuel Whitelaw, our Director of Careers for compiling this fantastic guide. Wishing you all the best for the year ahead! SABRENE BEN DEKHIL

EDITOR'S WELCOME SAMUEL WHITELAW Hello all, I’d also like to start by thanking you for taking the time to peruse the Griffith University Law Society’s Clerkship Guide for 2020. The production of this guide would not have been possible without the combined efforts of both the diligent, hard-working 2020 GULS committee and our generous sponsors. I would further like to personally wish all those applying for various clerkships this month the best of luck. Whilst this can be an exhausting time, it can also be exciting. Whether you are successful or not, upon completing your clerkship applications I implore you to take the time to look back on your tertiary education and reflect on how far you have come. Far too often we can fall into the trap of looking at only what lies in front of us. Simply getting to the penultimate year of your law degree, and therefore meeting the clerkship application criteria, is a victory. Treat it as such. For those reading who aren’t at a stage in their degree where they are able to apply for clerkships, I congratulate you on taking an active role in educating yourself on your future career prospects. Career education is not only for students in the later years of their degree as it is never too early to start thinking about your plans after graduation. Every year GULS offers a range of events which facilitate educating students on their career options in the legal field. I encourage students of all years to stay up to date on the GULS Facebook page and engage with these events. As law students, our future professional field is markedly vast and can lead to a wide array of exciting possibilities. I hope this guide, in at least some small way, has assisted you in navigating your options. Although this year has already proved to be incredibly testing, our resilience leads me to look forward to a great 2020 for GULS and the law school as a whole. Happy reading. SAMUEL WHITELAW Director of Careers

2020 Clerkship Guide
About Us More than 40 years ago, HopgoodGanim was founded by two great friends. Today, HopgoodGanim is a large and fully integrated law firm offering solutions to commercial problems across the full spectrum of legal services from our offices in Brisbane and Perth. We continue to house one of Australia’s largest and most wellregarded family and relationship law practices. You may have asked yourself what makes HopgoodGanim different to any other firm? We believe it is the close relationships we have with our clients and each other. We do our very best work when we know our clients personally and we know their businesses inside and out. Inside our firm, people genuinely like each other, refer to each other as friends and work collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes possible for our clients. HopgoodGanim enjoys a reputation as a place where people love to come to work. We describe our culture as ‘The HG Way’ and central to this is a theme of ‘Business Mateship’. Business Mateship was a phrase we coined many years ago to capture the culture of friendship created by our founding partners and to describe how the people of HopgoodGanim, our clients and other stakeholders come together and interact. That is, we believe in treating each other, and our clients, as we would treat our friends. Clerkship Application Process / What we Look for in a Clerk HopgoodGanim offer three Vacation Clerkship programs over the course of a year. The programs run for four weeks in June/July, November/December and January/February. Over the course of each program, Vacation Clerks spend time with two different practice groups (their preference) and will undertake real legal work as well as attend client meetings and court appearances. Vacation Clerkships are well suited to those students in their fourth year. Relationships are crucial We’re looking for clerks who will thrive in our relationship culture. Your future legal training will see you in front of clients most days of the week. Being able to connect and form a positive and professional relationship with colleagues and clients is important. Commercial acumen While good results at university are highly regarded, the ability to understand commercial problems is equally as important in the people who join our team. Commerciality is something that we train for, but we also look for graduates who are passionate about learning about a sector. Deliver a real service Hand in hand with our relationship culture is the importance of delivering an exceptional client experience consistently. About the Program Leo Cussen has been operating since 1972 and provides high quality practical legal training and professional development programs for entry-level lawyers through to senior legal practitioners. The Leo Cussen experience enables law graduates to learn how to practise law in a professional, yet friendly and engaging environment. Our Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is comprehensive and well respected by legal employers. Employers may sponsor their graduate employee to do the course. Successful completion of the Practical Legal Training (PLT) course entitles you to apply for admission to the legal profession as an Australian Lawyer which, in turn, entitles you to practise as an Australian Legal Practitioner in any Australian jurisdiction. Program Length, Delivery Method, Class Times, etc YOUR CHOICE: PLT ONSITE OR ONLINE Online delivery offers flexibility to those who have work or family commitments and who enjoy the discipline of learning within a small online community. Online trainees attend a series of intensive teaching blocks, with both weekday and weekend options offered. In the full time Online course, you will need to commit at least 25 hours a week to your PLT work. We also offer a part time Online PLT which requires a study commitment of approximately 15 hours per week. The Onsite course suits those looking for a training experience with face-to-face teaching and learning. It also suits those on overseas student visas. In the Onsite course you attend each business day from 9am to 5pm. What Kind of Work Do You Do While Enrolled? The PLT course at Leo Cussen is unique as it gets trainees to run client files as part of a simulated law firm, with an emphasis on ‘learning by doing’. As such, you will carry out the kind of work that lawyers do in real practice. This means that trainees can expect to run files from start to end, while writing letters of advice, drafting court documents, interviewing clients and delivering arguments before a judge. How Assessments Are Conducted There are no tests or exams at Leo Cussen. All trainees are assessed on the work they produce as part of running their simulated law firm files. For example, you will be assessed on the letters you draft, the client interviews you conduct, and the arguments you deliver in court. How do Placements Work? Leo Cussen has a dedicated Placement Advisor. For trainees who enrol in our onsite course, Leo Cussen will find your placement for you. For trainees who enrol in our online course, you are responsible for sourcing your own placement, however the Placement Advisor is available to provide support and guidance in sourcing your placement.

Longer Placement v More Electives? How to Choose? Leo Cussen has the shortest placement requirement in the country; you are only required to carry out 3 weeks (15 days) of placement in order to complete that component of the course. All trainees undertaking our course in Victoria must complete the full 3 weeks. Is Entry Competitive or Practically Guaranteed Upon Application? All individuals who hold an eligible legal qualification are entitled to enrol in our PLT, and Leo Cussen does not apply any additional selection criteria. For the online course, Leo Cussen does not currently have any quotas. For the onsite course, as this is a unique program where trainees are given desk space, there is a maximum number of desks in the building. However the vast majority of applicants for the onsite course receive a spot. What Makes Your Program Special – Why Should Students Choose You Over Others? • Our reputation – we have been delivering the PLT since 1972 • Highly practical – you will run actual client files as part of a simulated law firm experience • Mentoring – every trainee is allocated a mentor who provides regular 1-to-1 feedback. All mentors are current or former legal practitioners • Short placement of only 15 days. We find this for you if you do the onsite course. Support is provided for the online course • Networking – opportunities to meet legal practitioners • No exams or tests • More face-to-face training, even for the online version of the course • The choice of weekday and weekend options for the online course intensives • Dedicated Placement Advisor to provide guidance and support • Dedicated Careers Advisor to provide career guidance and support
