Getting to your Dream Career Crafting a LinkedIn profile to help you stand out in a competitive job market can be a daunting task. If you are thinking you will get to it ‘at some stage’ when you are closer to graduation, well think again. Now is the time because you never know who is looking or when opportunity might come knocking.

1. Make the time to make it shine

4. Write an eye catching profile headline

Take the time to make your profile as complete as possible. This not only increases the odds of your profile coming up in searches, but good quality, relevant content including keywords will capture the interest of recruiters and may move you forward in the recruitment process.

Your headline gives an immediate impression of who you are as a professional or who you aspire to be. You have 120 characters to promote yourself and your unique value.

You can make your non-legal experience relevant by highlighting your transferable skills, but be careful not to make it too long. Don’t add ‘stuff’ just for the sake of it.

2. Profile picture Should you include a profile photo? Yes definitely. A professional looking photo will increase the likelihood of your profile coming up in searches and research shows that profiles with a photo are 14 times more likely to be viewed. You are also likely to receive more connection requests and messages when you have a warm and friendly photo. Your profile picture should reflect the professional version of you. A head and shoulders shot is most appropriate and dress like you are attending an interview. Get someone to take a nice tight head shot of you against a neutral coloured wall. Remember to smile! Adding a background banner to your profile can also make it more eye catching and is a way to add a touch of your personality.

3. Customise your URL You can customise your URL to make it look more professional and easier to remember. This will also make it more likely to come up in searches and easier for you to include on your resume, student business card and email signature. On your profile look to the top right of the screen and click on ‘Edit public profile & URL”. This will show your current URL, click on the ‘pencil’ symbol and specify what you’d like your address to be. LinkedIn will tell you if the URL you have chosen is already taken. When you’re finished, click ‘Save’.

Create an interesting headline to capture what you want to do and not your current job. For example, “Aspiring Family Lawyer” or “Griffith University Law Student with a passion for family law”.

5. Professional Summary Write a professional summary approximately 3 – 5 paragraphs long to show off all the good things about you. You can highlight relevant work experience, achievements, strengths, aspirations, what you do outside of work or a personal achievement you are proud of. Refer to yourself in the first person - it is much more engaging, sincere and allows you the opportunity to inject some of your personality and uniqueness in to your profile. Don’t use clichés to describe yourself and be careful of using buzzwords. Use words that describe your work performance rather than personality traits.

6. Experience In the “Experience” section of your profile, include internships and voluntary positions as well as non-legal related roles. Provide a brief outline of your responsibilities, duties and achievements, highlighting your transferable skills. Use bullet points to describe your accomplishments of each role - describe what you achieved rather than what you were responsible for. Including numbers and statistics to quantify your statements will add credibility to your profile. You can also show your experience and unique skillset through other sections of your profile. Include other certifications, certificates, second languages, and non-academic activities you have been involved in, for example, exchanges and involvement in student societies.

7. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Don’t assume SEO and being found on LinkedIn will take care of itself. Add keywords to every section of your profile to help it come up in searches. You can find keywords in job descriptions of positions you are interested in applying for. A great way to do this is to cut and paste the text of the job description in to a ‘word cloud’ generator such as WordClouds or Wordle. The words that stand out most prominently will be the words recruiters are looking for when they are searching LinkedIn. Sprinkle these words strategically throughout your profile, especially in your summary, skills section and experience sections.

8. Connections Increasing your connections will help your profile come up in searches, but make sure that they are quality connections and not just connections for the sake of numbers. When you meet people at events or through mutual acquaintances, ask if you may connect with them on LinkedIn and then send them an invitation with a personal note. Remind them of where they met you and thank them for taking the time to speak with you. People are more likely to connect with you if you have met them in person or have a relationship outside of LinkedIn. If you are connecting with someone you admire but haven’t met in person, add a personal note to explain why you would like to connect with them.

9. Recommendations Recommendations add credibility and strength to your profile. These are short statements written by people in your network about a specific job or role you have held. Think about who you could ask for a recommendation. It could be a previous manager or boss, colleagues you’ve worked with, lecturers, or fellow students. Make sure they know you and can speak to your work, skills and experience. Contact these people to ask for a recommendation and let them know you are working on improving your LinkedIn profile to support your job search. Don’t be afraid to be specific about what you would like them to focus on. Tell them what skill or experience you would you like them to provide a statement about. This will help them to write a targeted recommendation rather than a generic statement. Be selective with who you ask, it’s about quality not quantity.

10. F ollow industry leaders and key organisations Make sure you are following relevant organisations, groups and industry leaders. This will show your interest in the profession and give you some great information. Follow organisations you are interested in working for to learn more about them and their recruitment activities. This could help you in future interviews. Take the time to get your LinkedIn profile right – you never know who could be looking at it. Remember, first impressions count and you don’t know who could link you to your dream career.

About Us At Allens, we’re focused on advancing our industry through equipping our people with the skills and experience they need to be the lawyers of the future. We’re ready to define tomorrow. Are you? With us, you’ll be more than a lawyer. Our people are technical experts, but they’re also trusted business advisers who think bigger, more broadly and more strategically. Together, we solve complex legal challenges, and collaborate across practice areas and disciplines to guide our clients. We work across borders too, thanks to our alliance with Linklaters. This strategic partnership opens up worlds of opportunity for our business and our people, including rotations in Linklaters London, Hong Kong and Singapore for our graduate lawyers. In a rapidly changing world, we seek opportunities to innovate, embracing creative thinking, new approaches and emerging technology. And we don’t just use them to benefit ourselves and our clients. We believe strongly in driving positive change to do right by our community too. Our teams are open, inclusive and encouraging, giving you the chance to learn and grow, but your development will be down to you. You’ll have the flexibility to drive your career, and we’ll recognise your achievements and hard work as you progress through the firm. Are you ready to begin? Graduate Program Comprising two 12-month placements in different practices, our graduate program offers exposure to stimulating legal challenges. In each rotation, you’ll gain a depth of experience that comes from seeing matters through. However, at Allens we don’t work in silos so you won’t be limited to working with one partner or by your practice areas. Working with different teams and leading organisations, you’ll grow a solid skills base and develop the agility needed to thrive in our everchanging world. Early careers at Allens provide highly tailored training through the Allens Academy. Developed in partnership with the Australian National University, our Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice will help you transition from law graduate to legal expert and trusted business adviser. Application Process Our recruitment process involves an online application, one online preinterview component and one face-to-face interview. Online application form: The first step in the process is the online application form. This helps us to get to know you and understand what sets you apart. We will ask you a few short questions. It is at this point that you will provide us with your CV, cover letter and academic transcript. The Rare recruitment survey: We are proud to be the first Australian business to launch Rare’s Contextual Recruitment System. It is a data-driven tool that helps us to increase diversity in our workforce. Part of your online application will include completing the Rare recruitment questionnaire. Rare allows us to view each candidate in their context. It offers a more complete picture of your socioeconomic and family background, educational experience and performance and culture. The interview: The face-to-face interview is a chance for us to get to know you and for you to get to know us. During your interview, you’ll meet with members of our recruitment panel. We’ll want to hear about your university and work experiences, extracurricular involvement, career aspirations and interest in Allens. At Allen’s, we’re interested in what you can bring to the firm and what we can offer you in return. We’ll use the recruitment process to get to know you and your career aspirations. Through the recruitment process you’ll learn about Allens and what makes us unique as a firm. It’s a great time for you to ask questions, think about your career and do your research. We’re looking for people who will thrive in our environment and make a positive, ongoing commitment to our firm. Find out more at allens.com.au/careers.

Clerkship Recruitment Hints & Tips Erin Molony, Law Graduate Was the clerkship recruitment process what you expected it to be? I didn't really have many expectations going into the clerkship recruitment process, other than being told it was very time consuming. This certainly proved to be true, but what I didn't expect was how much I would end up enjoying the experience. The clerkship recruitment process provides lots of opportunities to meet new, interesting and often like-minded people, whether that be during cocktail evenings, coffees with junior lawyers or the interviews themselves. The process also helped to give me some clarity around what I was looking for in a firm, and what areas of law I was interested in. I guess it's often hard to know what you're looking for in a firm until you're confronted with something that is clearly the wrong fit.

How did you juggle the clerkship period (from applications to interviews), university, work and social commitments? The clerkship application and interview period was definitely quite involved. At the advice of some of my friends, I started putting together my written applications early. There is a lot you can learn about a firm and its offerings even before the clerkship application period officially opens, and spending some time finding out about different firms, and deciding whether or not they seem like a good fit, can save you a lot of time down the track. I also decided to take a slightly reduced study load that particular semester, which a few of my friends had suggested I do. There is often limited flexibility with interview times, so having the time to travel to the CBD without missing important lectures was very helpful.

How did you prepare for offer day? Offer day can be quite chaotic and so, in preparation for it, I tried my best to rank the firms I had applied to in preference order. This helped me to action the calls and emails as they came through on offer day. I also think that trying to manage your expectations is a big part of preparing for clerkship offer day.

If, looking back on the recruitment process, you could give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be? Don't take rejection personally. The nature of the recruitment process is that firms only have a limited number of spots, and can only have a small window into the type of person you are. You therefore shouldn't necessarily take rejection as an indication that you are not good enough or not suited for a particular career or area of law. If you can, try to see such experiences as an opportunity to practise, learn and improve.

What advice would you have for future clerks on their first day at a firm? To just be yourself. Don't try to fit what you think is a particular firm's perfect mould. The reality is there is no perfect mould and there is nothing worse than insincerity. You're better off just being yourself and having a firm hire you for who you are.

About Us More than 40 years ago, HopgoodGanim was founded by two great friends. Today, HopgoodGanim is a large and fully-integrated law firm offering solutions to commercial problems across the full spectrum of legal services from our offices in Brisbane and Perth. We continue to house one of Australia’s largest and most well regarded family and relationship law practices. You may have asked yourself what makes HopgoodGanim different to any other firm? We believe it is the close relationships we have with our clients and each other. We do our very best work when we know our clients personally and we know their businesses inside and out. Inside our firm, people genuinely like each other, refer to each other as friends and work collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes possible for our clients. HopgoodGanim enjoys a reputation as a place where people love to come to work. We describe our culture as ‘The HG Way’ and central to this is a theme of ‘Business Mateship’. Business Mateship was a phrase we coined many years ago to capture the culture of friendship created by our founding partners and to describe how the people of HopgoodGanim, our clients and other stakeholders come together and interact. That is, we believe in treating each other, and our clients, as we would treat our friends. Graduate Program By the time our law graduates commence their formal graduate role with the firm, they’ve often been a part of the HopgoodGanim team for several years working as an outside law clerk, SmartLaw Centre analyst, vacation clerk or research clerk, while still studying. We know a lot about them and they know a lot about the firm, our culture and how we operate. However, the learning has only just begun. The first two years as a law graduate is a fast paced but exciting time to develop personal and technical skills and put yourself and what you’ve learned at university to the test. All of our law graduates, regardless of whether you’ve worked with us previously, will spend their first week in a detailed induction program in our Brisbane office. During this first week, you’ll come into contact with most of the 250 Brisbane based staff either via a formal induction session or at a social gathering. Our graduate induction program is the foundation of your future learning at the firm and will include information about our culture, business strategy, IT systems and legal precedents as well as a lot of face to face time with our Partners and senior leadership team. Throughout the program, graduates receive Practical Legal Training and leave for study, ongoing professional and personal development, two x 12 month placements, mentoring, and admission after the first year of the program allowing for a safety net after admission!

PRACTICAL LEGAL TRAINING (PLT) T: 1300 039 031 E: pltadmin@leocussen.edu.au W: www.leocussen.edu.au

About the Program Leo Cussen has been operating since 1972 and provides high quality practical legal training and professional development programs for entry-level lawyers through to senior legal practitioners. The Leo Cussen experience enables law graduates to learn how to practise law in a professional, yet friendly and engaging environment. Our Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is comprehensive and well respected by legal employers. Employers may sponsor their graduate employee to do the course. Successful completion of the Practical Legal Training (PLT) course entitles you to apply for admission to the legal profession as an Australian Lawyer which, in turn, entitles you to practise as an Australian Legal Practitioner in any Australian jurisdiction. Program Length, Delivery Method, Class Times, etc. YOUR CHOICE: PLT ONSITE OR ONLINE Online delivery offers flexibility to those who have work or family commitments and who enjoy the discipline of learning within a small online community. Online trainees attend a series of intensive teaching blocks, with both weekday and weekend options offered. In the full time Online course, you will need to commit at least 25 hours a week to your PLT work. We also offer a part time Online PLT which requires a study commitment of approximately 15 hours per week. The Onsite course suits those looking for a training experience with face-to-face teaching and learning. It also suits those on overseas student visas. In the Onsite course you attend each business day from 9am to 5pm. Application Dates/Program Start Dates We run two intakes a year for both onsite and online. Intake Dates: July 2019 January 2020 What Kind of Work Do You Do While Enrolled? The PLT course at Leo Cussen is unique as it gets trainees to run client files as part of a simulated law firm, with an emphasis on ‘learning by doing’. As such, you will carry out the kind of work that lawyers do in real practice. This means that trainees can expect to run files from start to end, while writing letters of advice, drafting court documents, interviewing clients and delivering arguments before a judge. How Assessments Are Conducted There are no tests or exams at Leo Cussen. All trainees are assessed on the work they produce as part of running their simulated law firm files. For example, you will be assessed on the letters you draft, the client interviews you conduct, and the arguments you deliver in court.

For trainees who enrol in our online course, you are responsible for sourcing your own placement, however the Placement Advisor is available to provide support and guidance in sourcing your placement. Longer Placement v More Electives? How to Choose? Leo Cussen has the shortest placement requirement in the country; you are only required to carry out 3 weeks (15 days) of placement in order to complete that component of the course. All trainees undertaking our course in Victoria must complete the full 3 weeks. Is Entry Competitive or Practically Guaranteed Upon Application? All individuals who hold an eligible legal qualification are entitled to enrol in our PLT, and Leo Cussen does not apply any additional selection criteria. For the online course, Leo Cussen does not currently have any quotas. A Leo Cussen graduate shares their story:

Kathryn McGregor Solicitor - Criminal Law Section, Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service At University I completed a BA and LLB and completed an exchange at Uppsala University for a semester. I was unsure what area of Law I wanted to practise in and I wanted to gain insight into all aspects of Law, I knew that I could not do this through a ‘traditional’ articled clerk position, and the client files at Leo Cussen were a great way to get into the different areas of practice. I didn’t have any legal connections when I started the course and knowing that Leo Cussen organise a placement for onsite PLT trainees was of great comfort. Further, having been a student for so many years and juggling part time work, I felt that Leo Cussen would be a great training ground for getting used to being in an office environment Monday – Friday. I currently work as a criminal solicitor at the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS). I provide advice and representation for Aboriginal clients in criminal matters in the Magistrates’ and Children’s Court. VALS services the whole of Victoria and each solicitor is allocated a metropolitan court and a regional court. So, fortnightly, I will travel to a regional area and spend 2-3 days being the Aboriginal legal representative for the local community. I am constantly learning about different areas of the criminal law and how to engage with people from clients to prosecutors to magistrates. I thoroughly enjoy appearing at court and developing my advocacy skills. VALS provides an ‘holistic’ style approach with our clients and we are able to link them in to culturally specific services which is of great benefit to the clients and the community overall. Being able to help a client navigate their way through the system with tailored support is rewarding. We have a very collegial environment and there is always support for new lawyers. My job is constantly challenging and surprising – no day is ever the same – and that is fantastic! I really enjoyed the advocacy and criminal areas of training in the Leo Cussen PLT. I met some tremendous instructors whom I will still call for advice and they are more than happy to give that advice. I also enjoyed the social aspect of Leo Cussen, I have great friends that I have met from my course and still remain in contact with. My placement that they arranged at NAAJA in Darwin was the cherry on top! The Leo Cussen PLT gave me the training and confidence that I needed to know that I could practise law and be effective in this role. Being able to apply all the legal knowledge you have gained in a practical way was tremendous.
