Paxton was only 23 when he first designed the blueprints for the Crystal Palace. With previous architectural accomplishments like the Chatsworth Building, he was already very familiar with the use of glass and iron. Overall the design process took Paxton 10 days, and his designed was favoured due to his connections within the committee.

In order to mount these windows, navvies were hoisted to the top and placed on a glazing waggon where the windows were secured using putty.
