brief.

I like a brief that has a some kind of purpose. A brief that isn’t there to just tick the box. And I like having a clear idea of what is expected of me, as in I have to undersdand the problem in order to be able to solve it. However, I do not like following the rules. I will do what is expected of me and more, but I will do it my way.

elements.

I look for colours and textures, and how things work together in any of the elements, be it photography, illustration, typography or hand drawn lettering. I don’t mind which plays the first violin - just whatever works. I do believe I use a lot of hand drawn lettering and illustration in my work though.

success.

I think success comes from satisfaction. The more I do the things I like and enjoy, the more successful my work turns out to be. I can work day and night for the outcome I want. I will not believe that something doesn’t work until I try doing it myself. Thus I spend a LOT of time on doing. I don’t think and then do. I think while I’m doing. And I can only do one thing at a time, as in one idea at a time. I will only move on to the next idea when I make sure that this one doesn’t work. And that’s why development sheets never work for me. It’s a torture.

problems.

Problems make the life more interesting. I always have problems, and solving them keeps me satisfied and going. The most common problem is printing the finished work. No matter how good something looks on the screen, and how satisfied you think you are with your work, once you go printing, your expectations get crashed, and then you need to adapt to what you’ve got. Sometimes it works to your benefit sometimes it doesn’t.

personality. I want to open a creative teashop. I’m all about tea. And sea. A creative tea will be served by the sea! Ha!

I had a lot of fun with The Ministry of Sound brief. However, I think I have concentrated more on the feel and emotion of the posters rather than on typography. I’m happy with the outcome and I ended up with a lot of great colourful images to use in the future, and I think I got the message of what a nightclub means to me across LOUD, movement, colourful, trance. I started with just this one image of candle light, which looks like beams of lazer. I played with the image In Photoshop: changing different filters, adding more layers and so on. Then I wanted more texture and more colours so I did some experiments with acrylic paint, which led into some interesting results.

For the Little White Lies cover brief I chose a movie Black Swan, which stands for conflict, drama, perfection, lightness, and movement as well. To illustrate that I photographed ink drops in the water. I found a spot in one of the photos that looked just like ballerina’s dancing legs and a tutu. For the main character’s face illustration I chose to use water colour as it goes well with the watery/light/movement theme. Combined together, these two elements created quite a nice and interesting slow motion/dancing concept.

Illustration brief. Create an original cover illustration for Little White Lies magazine.

Meltdown festival posters

Meltdown festival poster project. I really enjoyed this one day project. I quite like working under preasure, and I liked that there was nothing else attached to it - it was what it was - by the end of the day have four posters that meet certain requirements. No need to waste time on anything else.

University logo design. Another one day brief. I didn’t like this one. For one, because I don’t like doing corporate designs. For two, because I don’t like doing things that I don’t like. For three, I think the brief was a bit vague.

Photography book project was my favourite this semester. I spent more time on it than I intended, but I was happy with the progress I made. I was very excited in the begining because the photographer and I came up with a great idea of how the book would look like and how it would fit in and illustrate the concept of a netted doll perfectly. The excitment went away shortly after as I faced the main problem - photographer wanted the photos printed on the glossy photography paper, which meant they would have to be glued onto some other surface, as having a book made of photography paper makes it very uncomfortable to work with and even to look though because of fingerprint marks. So the idea was to make a book as a family photoalbum where photographs are stuck into the book. I was excited again and came up with a lot of things that could go into the book and would make it look exciting and engaging. I made a lot of patterns, and wanted to put nice shiny frames around the photos, and add some drawings around the single doll shots in order to create some story line, and I wanted to do some cutouts, and... haha, then it just became too much, and the problem was me taking over the photographs. I had to concentrate on the photography, not on all the fun things I got distracted with. However, my main problem still was this photography paper. As the photographs themselves were basicaly just shots of dolls on the white background, there weren’t much cropping options - there was a horrible amount of white around every photo, which looked like a real disaster. Thus, after long hours of unfortunate trials, I came to a conclusion that photos would look much better and much more interesting if they were printed on the same paper as the book. There wasn’t anything to loose in the photo - the photopaper didn’t actually add to the photo at all, except for shininess, for which I used the PVA glue effect later. I convinced the photographer and we carried on to the next thing. So the whole concept of the book changed, it became more simplistic, cleaner, and what is more important, the photos could be used to their best advantage. And what was very imposrtant to mee too, I could use my patterns and design without taking the attention off the photos. Photos and designs finally started working as a whole.

Mr. Bear Medved never made into the book. What a shame. Violence won’t take you far!

The idea for my manifesto was that life is a game and we never know what we are going to end up with. We might try our best and we might work hard and all that, but at the end we roll a dice and it all comes to a chance. However, it is up to us wheather we take that chance or not. We might not like what we get, but it’s up to us to change it and make it into something we do like. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and every experience is a lesson towards our growth. There are many different sides to life (just like to a dice, like to a personality) but each of them have some value in it, hence there is no purpose in neglecting either of them - they all are a part of a unison.

my manifesto. I am a shy and protective person, who likes to stay in a safe shell. Therefore, mostlikely I will only talk to people who talk to me first. Hence, my manifesto is just a box (a dice) on the surface, but if you put interest and effort in looking into it closer, each side opens up into a pop-up point. Furthermore, if you are persistant and determined enough, you will find a secret door that opens up into a hidden manifeto point, which is about the importance of a heart.

life is a game. a game without rules. a game of choices. a game of chances. a game of luck. a game full of surprises.

be sure to play your game!

That’s right! OBVIOUSLY, this doesn’t look at all like the box I’ve been talking about few pages ago.

I love sea... and I can’t even swim properly. But only the sea can illustrate the depth of my heart, and only the sea can understand it.

Accidents do happen indeed. As much as I got excited about working on my manifesto idea, the photography book came along and I got carried away with it. My freinds were saying I should concentrate on my manifesto first, as it is the main project. Filee even translated it into my language - manifesto is the main dish and photography book is just a dessert. However, just as I like starting my meal with a dessert, and eating the main only if I have any room left, so my project management goes the same way - I do what I like most first so that I would get enough energy and excitment to last through the boring part too. I DO NOT LIKE WAITING for the good things. Why to wait for something that you can have right now? This world is upside down - people always do boring things first because they think they will reward themselves with something nice later. Thus, they always end up with less time for the things that they REALLY like and want. Also, what if later never comes? Why to waste time on boring things? The more exciting things you do NOW, the more exciting life you will be having. Who said that we can’t survive on the desserts only anyway?!
