First invented by John Taliafero Thompson c.1918.

Made in response to the lack of short range rifles in the trenches of WWI.

Marketed in to police in 1920’s and 30’s as “The safest gun to shoot on the city streets”.

Later used by crime syndicates as one of their weapons of choice.

The classification “submachine gun” derives from the size of the bullet - using smaller rounds than typical machine guns.

Submachine gun rounds travel slower, and have are accurate only to 100m.

The trigger is pulled releasing the sear.

The sear releases the bolt from it’s locked position.


The bolt spring drive the bolt forwards.

The bolt hits the chamber, causing the firing pin to collide with the bullet’s primer.

The propellent in the bullet is ignited, which causes gas to expand, driving the bullet down the barrel and reseting the bolt.

The extractor pulls the bullet casing out of the barrel.

The cartridge is pushed up with the magazine spring, which lines up in front of the bolt, ready to repeat step 1.
