18 EAST RIDING

Make it your mission this year to discover a different dining experience from the wealth of establishments the East Riding has to offer.

Welcome to our latest edition of Bon Appétit It’s our pleasure to bring you this magazine which gives you a taste of the best places to eat in Hull and the East Riding. Turn the page and you’ll find details of more than 20 eateries in the city and county to savour. You can see a selection of each one’s typical menus, photographs and a factfile to help you make your reservation. There’s everything from curry houses to country pubs, fish and chips to French fine dining and even a restaurant where you can sit among the sharks. We hope to inspire you to get out and enjoy everything our region has to offer when it comes to food. With so much choice, there’s no need to wait for a special occasion. And, as our article on page 29 shows, you don’t even need to find someone to eat out with. Research has shown that eating alone is becoming less stigmatised and there’s really no need to feel embarrassed about booking a table for one. If you are planning on having company however, we have put together five top tips to help you plan a meal for everyone from a couple to a crowd. We also shine a light on the East Riding’s eateries and focus on The Avenues, home to perhaps Hull’s liveliest and most eclectic dining scene. So put your feet up, grab a cuppa and have a read – you’re sure to find the perfect place for your next meal out. FINE DINING

company AND GOOD

Top tips to ensure everyone has a great night when you're dining out

O

ne of the joys of eating out is that with the cooking and clearing up all taken care of, all you have to do is relax and enjoy your meal. But there are a few things you can do to make things run even more smoothly. Here are Bon Appetit’s top tips for keeping everyone at your table happy.

1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT VENUE

Whether you’re organising a family feast for a dozen or a romantic table for two, it’s important that the restaurant’s atmosphere suits the mood you are trying to create. There’s no point in booking a lively eaterie where anything goes if you want some special time together as a couple or expecting somewhere prim and proper to cope with a

04 BON APPÉTIT

noisy group.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TABLE

It’s not always possible to choose but it’s worth asking when making your booking about which tables are available depending on your preferences. Would you like to sit somewhere quiet or be near the bar, for example? Are you keen to avoid a draft near the front door or would being close to the front window to watch the world go by suit you and your guests?

3. LOOK AT THE MENU IN ADVANCE

Getting an idea of what food is available will not only give you a flavour of what to expect but can also help you get the most out of your experience. You might spot something that requires advance ordering

or see a dish that you would love but need tweaking to suit allergy or dietary requirements. Spotting this before you arrive will give you chance to warn the restaurant who are more likely to be able to assist if they have time to plan for your arrival.

4. MIND YOUR MANNERS

Your mobile phone can be a useful tool when looking forward to a night out, helping you make a reservation, find your way there and check out reviews of the place you are going. But when you actually sit down to eat, it’s much more polite to put it away. If you are worried about babysitters or others being able to contact you in an emergency, ensure they have the number of the restaurant.

You could also put your phone on vibrate mode so you can quickly check who is calling without disturbing anyone.

5. SPEAK-UP ABOUT POOR SERVICE

With so many excellent restaurants in Hull and the East Riding, the vast majority of dining experiences in this area should be pleasant ones. But even the best of places can sometimes get things wrong. While this is disappointing, it’s better to keep you cool and try to sort things out calmly. Explain what has gone wrong simply and discreetly and give the restaurant chance to rectify any error. This approach might just rescue things and is far more sensible than keeping quiet and ranting about it either online or to others afterwards.

Serving up a traditional best-of-British dish, but with a twist, has set the Fish & Chip Kitchen on the road to culinary success. As well as top-quality fish and chips and seafood dishes, diners can enjoy cocktails and beers - all as locally sourced as possible - in glamorous surroundings. The social media responses to the Fish & Chip Kitchen’s offering speak for themselves. “Five-star food - best fish

and chips I have ever had.” “A fish n chippy with more than a touch of class.” “As an old fish dock employee, I can truly say the haddock served at this restaurant is first class.” This is just some of the high praise that this restaurant has received. Its owners decided to break the mould when they opened. The funky venue serves freshly-mixed cocktails with titles such as The Deep,

Evening Catch and George Henry Smith, alongside its beautifully battered fish and top-notch chips - an unusual combination that has attracted rave reviews. The owners thought that, with Hull’s long-held traditions for serving fish, they would try to revive that proud fishing heritage with a restaurant specialising in mouth-watering, fresh, sustainably caught fish.

American Smokehouse

www.auntbibbys.com

You’ll never go home hungry after a night at Aunt Bibby’s From mouth-watering buffalo wings to pulled pork sandwiches, baby back ribs, burgers, half smoked chickens and tantalising Coney Island-style hot dogs, lavished with chilli, cheese and lashings of mustard, there’s no chance of any food lover going home hungry after a night with Aunt Bibby. As the restaurant itself says: “Our meats are served as the barbecue gods intended, the traditional Texan Way, allowing you, our loyal fanbase, to customise and enhance the flavour using our own in-house sauces including Kansas Neat, Louisiana Hot and Tennessee Hollerin’.” Bibby’s was the first of a wave of American-style smokehouses to open across the city and boasts its own barbecue pit and dry-rub

marinade for diners to enjoy an authentic, intense deep southern smokey flavour to their meat. The decor is colourful and friendly with car number plates and Uncle Sam posters pasted on the painted brick walls and a wall of victory/ shame listing everyone who’s attempted the Bibby’s big eat challenge. This is the one where you have to demolish enough to feed a small army and be able to walk unaided. It certainly takes its American-ness seriously with a selection of US IPA beers and Bourbon-based cocktails alongside the more conventional booze offerings. Add to that its relaxed atmosphere plus great service to boot and Bob’s your uncle – a night at Aunt Bibby’s is an experience to savour.

From cosy country pubs to bustling town centre restaurants, the East Riding’s dining scene is one to savour

T

There’s something to suit every taste and budget, whether you are celebrating a special occasion or just want a night away from the cooker. Many make the most of the local larder, from the freshest seafood to produce from our fields and farms. As such, each season offers new delights and a reason to keep on returning to your favourite place. But with so much to enjoy, it’s worth exploring the area. Why not tie in a meal with a day out or arrange a special trip

just to sample something different? Or make a date for monthly get-togethers with friends, family or colleagues, booking a different venue each time. And you don’t have to stick to evenings either. Start the day with an indulgent breakfast or brunch, linger over a leisurely lunch or surprise

a loved one with afternoon tea. Instead of ordering three courses at the same restaurant, you could even visit three different places in one day. Begin with something light in the morning, go elsewhere for a main meal and finish with cocktails and a sweet treat later, taking in the shops, some sights or a bit of pampering inbetween. Whether you want to dress-up or keep things casual, there are lots of different settings for foodies too. From formal surroundings with silver service

to help yourself buffets in bustling environments, there’s more to dining in the East Riding than what is on your plate. Don’t forget to complement your meal with something to drink too – it could be a Yorkshire-brewed real ale, a glass or two of fine wine or refreshing soft drink and say cheers to our culinary county.

You might be alone at the table but you’ll be part of a growing trend, according to restaurant reservation service, OpenTable. Its research reveals single cover reservations have more than doubled in the last two years; growing by 110 percent and making one the fastest growing reservation party size. The study also showed revealed that 87 per cent of Brits would have no problem dining out solo with those over the age of 55 22 per cent more likely to dine out alone compared to younger diners. But what exactly is there to do if you book in a dinner date with yourself ? Well, 46 per cent of those surveyed said they would pass

the time by reading a book, and perhaps surprisingly in this tech-obsessed age, only 36 per cent said they would play with their phone, showing a real desire to switch off and enjoy quality ‘me time’ when dining alone. Judi James, one of the UK’s leading psychologists and body language experts, said: “It is no surprise that eating out alone is fast becoming an attractive idea. “In a world where we are constantly in conversation with colleagues, clients, friends and family, either face to face or via social media, people are increasingly craving solitude.

“As a result, societal attitudes towards solo dining have changed and much of the stigma has been shed. Eating out alone is now viewed by many as a liberating, rather than lonely experience.” It seems some still believe there is a stigma to eating alone, however, with women almost twice as likely as men to pretend they are waiting for someone to join them. So what’s the secret to successful solo dining? Simply book somewhere were the food is so good, you won’t want any company to distract you.

Jet black and neon emblazoned, this new Mexican restaurant announces its presence with a flourish. Alongside the obvious touches, including a fluttering Mexican flag, a lot of thought has gone into its look. Skulls – a nod to the Mexican Day Of The Dead – grin from the walls in a series of murals. One skeleton, complete with a jauntily placed hat, is happily strumming a guitar. Together with Mexican songs, it’s a full-on sensory experience and a place for

conversation and laughter. And the lack of pretension extends to the food. This, as the menu proudly proclaims, is “Mexican Street Food” and it’s affordable, delicious and fun. Feast on authentic starters like frijoles– rich creamy black beans cooked twice for flavour – before moving on to the mighty selection of mains. Choose from tacos, burritos, quesadillas, or enchiladas with a delectable range of meaty, fish and vegetarian fillings. Wash your meal down with something from the cocktail menu.

Start with a Cantaritos (£6) – fresh lime and tequila shaken with orange liqueur and topped with grapefruit juice Ting – to get your tastebuds going then try something sweet like the Sugar Skull (£5.50) – tequila mixed with passion fruit and liqueurs, shaken up with fresh lime and cranberry juice – with dessert. Finish your night with a glass of Fuego Manzana (£6), a fiery mix of Scotch Bonnet chilli chopped and muddled with fresh lime tequila and sugar with a dash of apple juice if you dare!

American Smokehouse

www.auntbibbys.com

You’ll never go home hungry after a night at Aunt Bibby’s From mouth-watering buffalo wings to pulled pork sandwiches, baby back ribs, burgers, half smoked chickens and tantalising Coney Island-style hot dogs, lavished with chilli, cheese and lashings of mustard, there’s no chance of any food lover going home hungry after a night at Aunt Bibby’s. As the restaurant itself says: “Our meats are served as the barbecue gods intended, the traditional Texan Way, allowing you, our loyal fanbase, to customise and enhance the flavour using our own in-house sauces including Kansas Neat, Louisiana Hot and Tennessee Hollerin’.” Bibby’s was the first of a wave of American-style smokehouses to open across the city and boasts its own barbecue pit and dry-rub marinade for diners to enjoy an authentic, intense deep

southern smokey flavour to their meat. Add to that its relaxed atmosphere plus great service to boot, catering for large parties and intimate couples, and Bob’s your uncle – a night at Aunt Bibby’s is an experience to savour.
