It is estimated that up to 46 per cent of road traffic fatalities could be prevented if the right first aid assistance was available in those first moments, the DFA said.

ORTH Atlantic Seafood Forum chairman Guus Pastoor has told international industry leaders how ensuring sustainability has been the biggest achievement in the past 10 years, as a decade of the conference was celebrated.

Tackling sustainability, Mr Pastoor, said: “The commitment the industry has shown to sustainability is the biggest achievement of the last 10 years, but we haven’t quite succeeded in improving our image in that same time. Somehow our marketing efforts do not quite work as they should.

“For consumers, investors, and potential employees, our message should be about it, and that’s a challenge to pick up.”

arine Harvest Group chairman Ole Eirik Lerøy set the scene for a phenomenal future for the seafood industry, as Grimsby itself readies itself to bask in global attention.

That gives a sense of the global nature of the industry, and the processing sector. The other thing that came across, allied to this, is how much we do need each other. “You are my future suppliers, my future sales people, my future production managers, the future of this industry. Don’t underestimate the important part you are going to play in moving it forward.

“You have to stand out from the crowd, you have to have your persona felt, you have to have something that

He told how most careers are catered for, be it production, marketing, administration, legislation, and technical development. “The latter is moving at such a pace, and has stepped up a gear again,” he said. “We are seeing DNA speciation testing, I wouldn’t have thought of it 10 years ago. There are massive opportunities in regulation and food safety.” He highlighted future fishing vessel design, fuel-efficient engines, and methods of catch preservation.

“Sustainable fishing techniques are now being forced upon us, fortunately, and at last, by the EU. We are going to have to accelerate how we catch mixed species, figure out what line we take to not catch the wrong species.

“There is a whole world of careers available today, many, many different avenues to go down in this great industry you are embarking on. I have had plenty of fun along the way, I have worked with some great people and I am still having fun. You have to pick the right business, but believe me, it is out there.”

Speaking to the Telegraph ahead of winding the clock back 31 years to his first career, helping chefs with the preparation of the Grimsby traditional smoked fish starter, pictured right, Mr Berthet said: “New ideas have got to come from this emerging generation, because we are all exhausted with what we have brought to the game. We have come a long way, if you think back to the North Wall as it was, and carrying

fish across the country on flat-back lorries under tarpaulin, but there is a huge way to go, and we have to encourage it.

“The industry does have challenges, fishing vessels are struggling to attract youngsters, which is why Filipinos and eastern Europeans are brought in – we cannot attract the local talent. We have seen what happens in fish factories around the world, attracting people to low income jobs is tough, but it doesn’t have to be like that. Conditions people work in are improving all the time.”

Of September’s World Seafood Congress, he said: “I am looking forward to that. I think it is going to be an exceptional opportunity to showcase Grimsby.”

arine Harvest Group chairman Ole Eirik Lerøy set the scene for a phenomenal future for the seafood industry, as Grimsby itself readies itself to bask in global attention.

I remembered from competing with it how strong Young’s was in the UK James Hill of Marine Harvest, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Aquaculture is seen as the single-biggest answer to food demand as the global population rises, a fact made clear at Humber Seafood Summit events in Grimsby, and reinforced once again in Norway.

Mr Lerøy said: “Environmental sustainability is the name of the game. We need long term planning

His assured presentation touched on over labelling, and he posed the question whether it was time to switch the focus from business to consumer to business to business.

There had been earlier talk of the consumer trusting the supermarket or the brand to get the ethics and environment right.

“Are we just seeing the badging up of fisheries that are already high perfor ming?” he also put out there.

“This isn’t just about badging up.

Improvements are being seen across 125 different fisheries. We are seeing better fisheries and better standards of farming.”

Following him to the lectern at NASF, Young’s Seafood technical director Mike Mitchell gave a deeply historical insight into food fraud.

Stating he felt he was becoming “evangelical,” the proud Grimbarian said: “It is really important for the

food industry, and the seafood industry in particular. We heard seafood is the most adulterated product being sold in the world. There is a lot of scope for concern.

“There are three steps we need to take to reduce risk. We have to identify the risk, there are ways we can horizon scan and identify risk in the supply chain. Once we have identified risk, we need to reach out and look at the mitigation available. It may just be ensuring a fully certified supply chain. The third thing is making sure you enact this, if you can analyse the risk. It is no good saying we can do it, let’s go and do it.

“It can take it from a lot of risk to residual, managed, acceptable risk. If you cannot get it down, the only other way you can approach is to completely mitigate it, and don’t source it.”

Supermarket Asda joins seafood superstars A SUPERMARKET perspective was given to North Atlantic Seafood Forum, with Paul Geary, senior buying manager for fish with Asda, part of the UK delegation invited to speak.

And he heaped praise on Grimsby’s leading processing company, Young’s, while explaining how a focus on value for money, and health was reaping benefits in recent trials.

“We are trying to overcome the barriers to purchase for our consumers, and we have done a great deal of research to understand who that customer is,” Mr Geary said.

“For us as a retailer, and the retailing industry, it is really important we don’t just focus on the core customer, but look at regional differences and perception on price, or value for money. the value for money aspect, and what we need to be doing is selling the health benefits of the white fish.

“Consumers have told us, in particular the health-conscious category, that they want to buy it, so it is a question of how do you increase that purchase?

“We need to build on the health and convenience factors.”

It can be as simple as building the visibility of the information.

Last September, as Humber Seafood Summit was held in Grimsby, Young’s was working with Asda and the Norwegian Seafood Congress to build sales of white fish.

Mr Geary said: “We managed all the touch points – the ways we speak to customers – on pack, online, on shelf edges etc, and we spoke about the health benefits around fish and the quality. We saw significant sales growth, a 60 per cent increase over that period,

and we maintained that volume after. It was focusing on value for money.

“We are working in partnership with Young’s, and we see them as one of the most progressive processors in the UK. The corporate, social responsibility, sourcing credentials, and quality for customers is what we look for, and they look to change, adapt and to grow.

“It is a great example of Grimsby. Young’s and other processors in the area are really leading the way in UK seafood.”

This September, World Seafood Congress roles into Grimsby.

Mr Geary added: “It is a proud thing for Grimsby to host the World Seafood Congress, and it is an important thing for the retail industry to support Grimsby in that.”

ONG Energy is to install a game-changing radar system at Westermost Rough to help maximise energy and efficiency returns out at sea.

The Danish giant, investing massively into Grimsby, has chosen SmartWind Technologies to supply a dual-doppler device for offshore wind measurement.

Two radar units will be installed next year, close to the farm which is being built out of Grimsby, and will be operated and maintained from new facilities at Royal Dock, in what is an £11 million investment.

It comes after Westermost Rough was the first farm to use Siemens’ 6MW turbine on a commercial scale, as well as the first off the Humber to deploy helicopters to service them.

The devices will produce high-resolution dynamic maps of the wind flow through and around the structures.

The 18-month measurement campaign – the first of its kind where radar will be used for offshore wind measurement – will focus on wind farm wakes, power curve measurements and wind turbine load validation.

The campaign is part of Dong Energy’s BEACon – Beamed Radar for Energy Assessment and Site Conditions – research and development project. The project team will be responsible for running the test and demonstrating the new radars.

“Contrary to standard measurement set-ups, such as a met mast or a profiling lidar which provide measurements of the wind speed and direction at a single position, the radars give us the ability to quickly scan the flow field in and around an entire wind farm with unprecedented range and resolution.

“This enables a paradigm shift in the approach to integrating wind measurements into the design and operation of offshore wind farms.

“Project BEACon will give us invaluable new knowledge which can be applied across our entire portfolio to lower the cost of electricity.”

Wind data is a cost driver when

developing new offshore wind farms, as a key determination of layout. Besides their impact on energy production, the wind conditions also influence the capital expenditure through the foundation design. With the wind data from the project Dong Energy will be able to refine the assumptions and models used in optimising those decisions.

John Schroeder, co-founder of SmartWind Technologies, said: “Radar technologies have up until now been used for limited application in onshore wind farms acquiring detailed information to rapidly visualise evolving complex flows and turbine-to-turbine interaction.

“This collaboration transitions these measurement concepts and will provide information fundamental to driving down the cost of offshore wind energy further. Not only will these measurements contribute to short-term understanding of offshore wind farm complex flows; they will also open the door for developing future concepts, such as wind farm system level control and optimisation.”

To date, Dong has built close to every third offshore wind turbine in the world. By 2020, the company aims to have built 6,500 MW, tripling its current installed capacity.

South Bank renewables champ casts his eyes over first auctions MAF Smith, Barton-born deputy chief executive of green industries’ trade body RenewableUK, gives Business Telegraph his take on the past month’s events, concentrating on the first issue of Contracts for Difference.

For many wind energy companies, it was like being one of the surfers in the classic Guinness advert... ‘He waits, that’s what he does’. The pay-off, of course, is that good things come to those who wait.

That seems partly true. From almost £1.2 billion of bids, Government has offered contracts of some £315 million. So we know that while there have been successes, with companies hopefully celebrating how they have navigated these previously untested waters, there will be more people conducting a review to see what they might have done better, and wanting to see what their competitors have done differently.

The question many will be asking is; how do I make this boat go faster? How do I make this project fly? What can I do to compete in the

next auction? The big winners have been offshore and onshore wind.

And successful bidders have shown that industry is managing its costs, and able to respond well to the demands of competition. This helps consumers, but also suggests that our industry can continue to grow and thrive in this strong marketplace.

We can now see how onshore wind and solar are in competition, and both have strong claims about cost effectiveness and the fact that they are cheaper than new nuclear already, and on the way to being cheaper than new gas. Those who want decarbonisation but object to onshore renewables like wind and solar have some explaining to do about how they would deliver.

Fifteen onshore wind farms – almost 750MW – received an offer of support. That’s a good result.

Government will be pleased to see the onshore industry shifting focus from the renewable obligation to the Contract for Difference (CfD).

In turn industry will want assurances about keeping CfD auctions open to onshore wind.

Competition between projects and between comparable technologies will work if so.

And offshore wind also had a good day. Two projects secured support. Two projects will be better for the wider supply chain, and hopefully demonstrate the importance of having sufficient allocation for less established technologies.

And as the Cost Reduction Monitoring Framework (CRMF) – published by the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult on behalf of the Offshore Wind Programme Board – has underlined, offshore has been managing its costs well and innovation, partnership and technology advancement mean that the sector is ahead of target to hit £100/MWh. The biggest single contributor to this is the shift to bigger turbines. We know that the move from 3MW to 6MW machines was the catalyst to enabling Siemens to commit to UK blade and nacelle manufacturing. And the development of 8MW machines has seen MHI Vestas Offshore commit

to UK blade manufacture.

But these new strike prices also show that this move up a gear from 3MW to 6MW is not the limit of action we can take. The prices bid

by Mainstream and ScottishPower Renewables (the two auction winners) show those companies are bullish about their ability to continue driving costs down.

But there are people who did not have such a good day. Of course these companies need to take stock and decide on their approach to a 2016 auction. We need the next Government to commit early to continuing the auction timetable.

Kick-starting the 2015-16 process will be vital to maintain the momentum achieved, and assure the wider developer and investor community that there remains a market worth competing in.

For the wind sector as a whole, this has shown progress and an industry confident of its ability to deliver significant low carbon generation, while delivering cost reduction. That can only be good news for the UK economy and all FAIR COMMENT: Maf Smith. energy consumers.

Airport flying high fuelled

F

ACING redundancy or a posting to Azerbaijan, Paul Green took the first option, and so began his climb up the property ladder that has emerged with a Hilton Hotel.

HUMBERSIDE Airport’s fortunes are taking off once more, an audience of business leaders heard. David Laister reports on the exciting developments unfolding at Kirmington as it approaches a very special milestone.

ORTY years on from the first commercial flight, and Humberside Airport is once again in growth mode.

When the first Air Anglia trip to Guernsey left the former RAF Kirmington site in March 1975, it heralded the start of a new industry on the South Bank. Soon followed by the introduction of the first scheduled international service – to Amsterdam – the ‘Schipol hop’ remains the fixed-wing bedrock now, with calls to up daily services from three to four as passenger numbers rise.

But helicopters have brought the biggest expansion in recent years, on the back of traditional and emerging energy sources in the North Sea. Addressing the Bondholders Breakfast event this past month, Marcus Walker, assistant director for regeneration at North Lincolnshire Council – the single local authority from the Humberside days to retain a stake – gave a flavour of life as a ruby anniversary dawns.

“It has been a tough time for the aviation industry as a sector, it was adversely affected more than most by the economic climate,” he said.

“The tourism sector had some really serious problems.” Charting their withdrawal to major centre of population, and highlighting the impact it has had on the likes of Blackpool, Prestwick and Robin Hood, where he said the South Yorkshire airport was “losing money hand over fist”, he said: “Humberside is bucking that trend and actually making money.

From day one, the very beginning, it has been a business airport.

“Now we are at a once in a lifetime opportunity, everything is beginning to complete and come together.”

It is industry that is propelling the growth at the 139 hectare site, purchased by Eastern in August 2012, having been in the hands of Manchester Airports Group (MAG), for 13 years.

“We have Immingham, the biggest port, the biggest offshore wind energy opportunity, 30 per cent of the refinery sector and a £6 billion chemical sector,” Mr Walker said.

Dong Energy announced it is to use helicopters to complement vessels to service Westermost Rough, the wind farm currently being built out of Grimsby, when the weather causes issues. Future wind farms in the planning process are further out, and larger, making aerial access even more appealing.

“Dogger Bank is the size of North Yorkshire, Hornsea spans the distance between Hull and Liverpool. We have the big space in the right place, the last undeveloped deep water estuary in the UK. Industry needs to cluster and industry needs industry logic if it is going to drive down cost. The only place they can do that is the Humber. We are ideally located for once.

“We have been talking about a vision, it is now a reality, and it will be ready for 2018,” he said referring to Able Marine Energy Park, the conduit for many of the jobs and much of the investment in green energy, over and above the already-thriving Grimsby operations and maintenance sector.

“It is a £450 million direct investment, £1 billion in total, it will create 4,100 jobs, as my Dad would say, “proper jobs” and a further 9,000 in the rest of the region,” said Mr Walker. “It doesn’t get any bigger. It is going to create a renaissance in manufacturing, which is already 32 per cent of the local jobs compared to the national average of 10 per cent. We have the biggest enterprise zone in the country. The airport can help drive this forward, we are already looking at creating new routes to make links even stronger. This is really, really big stuff – I compare this to Nissan in the North East. When you look at London Thames Gateway, this is 70 per cent bigger. Nothing bigger than this is going on in the country. We are a hidden secret and we need to break that.”

In 1999, when MAG took an 82.8 per cent share, budget travel was a boom industry. In the early Noughties Ryanair and Easyjet were offering unbelievable deals, with fares to popular European destinations cheaper than a taxi to Kirmington for most.

Mr Walker said: “Manchester Airport Group bought it an we expected great things, then Robin Hood came behind us and split the area in two. We then saw much cost reduction, it was a ‘batten down the hatches’ mentality. That changed when Eastern took over, and Bristow has now bought in, 49.6 per cent of Humberside and 60 per cent of Eastern. That’s how big they

He sold up in 2007, and went travelling to Australia, returning to find a new dilemma to solve for the oil and as men. Mr Green had heard about the increasing number of rigs being served out of Humberside, by daily helicopter.

The entrepreneur behind the Nightel complex at Kirmington told the Bondholders’ Breakfast event: “People were saying there was a need for flats near Humberside Airport, to cut down on journey times, but there weren’t really great places to build them.

“Knowing the operation, I decided to look at solving the problem. When gas was first found in the 70s, you could only drill in one way, straight down. It meant lots of small rigs over pockets of gas. Moving on 30 years all these little rigs need more maintenance and crews go from Humberside to the rigs every day. Rather than 14 days offshore, they sleep on shore and get a taxi to work. Some still do work 14 days, but for most, the bulk in gas, it is unmanned installations.”

He found dealing with then-majority shareholder, MAG, frustrating.

“I didn’t have time to do a full feasibility study and build a proper hotel, and getting Manchester Airport Group to engage was nothing shot of impossible. I called them three or four times, stating what I wanted to do, but they were not interested. Finally I got in touch with them under pseudonym of BP, and explained what I intended to do. Despite earlier brush offs I managed to sign a deal and went and bought a 100 bed unit from an old RAF base, used to hold pilots, which is interesting with where we are heading.”

The modular facility was brought to Humberside, on the 139 hectare site by the A18.

see this opportunity. We are partnered by a huge multi-national company.”

It is a huge name in helicopters too, as the winning of the search and rescue contract with the UK Government proved, which brought another recent opening to Humberside, as part of a £17 million investment as alluded to last month.

“Humberside is not dependent on low cost and that is important, with where the tourist economy went, said Mr Walker. “Our economics are based on KLM, three daily, and 46 per cent of flights are helicopter-based. That is important because it is bringing in money. The only money you make on low cost flights is what you sell in duty free. This is a really good model. We have

now got all the major helicopter firms present at the airport and a perishable hub – posh for really big fridge.”

And, with the steel frame now up, and the largest hangar at the airport well occupied, BAE Systems’ investment in a huge training provision was also lapped up.

“Kids in Scunthorpe look out at Tata Steel and see a sunset industry, but what better way to get them into engineering than playing around with Hawk jets at the airport?” enthused Mr Walker.

And as for the fixed wing flights? “Tourism will come back. KLM is up 4.6 per cent, and more growth may see a fourth flight.”

The sky really is the limit.

Last year we saw the end of life of Windows XP as owners PCs and Laptops across the country were told to upgrade or leave themselves at the risk of infection from viruses and threats. This year Microsoft will pull the plug on support for Windows Server 2003 - a much bigger issue for businesses if this is the server operating system used to run their business. And when Microsoft “ end of life” a product, they effectively tell businesses, as far as that particular software’s concerned: “You’re on your own.”

But the picture’s not quite so bleak, and you’re not entirely on your own you’ve got the next four months to prepare for the inevitable.

“It is not really a hotel, in the traditional sense. I designed it from my time at BP, knowing people needed to get back, relax have a good shower and have laundry done.”

So when did the plan for the hotel in the traditional sense of the word emerge?

“The airport’s sale to Eastern Group, that’s when it started. I don’t think MAG appreciated what was coming, and reluctance to help us could have killed us. It could have all gone to Norwich. Eastern Group knew the interest, they had been carrying people in the industry for years.

“The plan was to prepare the business case for a proper hotel.

All the brands were looking at the fixed wing numbers and said there wasn’t enough traffic. They didn’t look at helicopters. I could say ‘I had X people for three years; let’s build a hotel’.”

Nightel is now also being

expanded to support a contract with BAE Systems, for students on site. “That’s 100 bedrooms let, the new hotel needs to hurry up,” he joked.

“Now we actually need it, and need it open. I was in talks with three brands, all well known brands, and because we want to aim high, we chose Hilton. It took six months to convince them, but we are now building a hotel.

Nightel is building it, Hilton will put their name to it, we do it on a franchise. Through the help of the council and the airport, we have got it.”

The important date is July 14th, which Microsoft has named as the ‘end of life’ for Windows Server 2003. You won’t immediately notice any difference, and the software will still work, but beyond that date there will be no more system updates or security enhancements, and, if you run into problems, Microsoft won’t help. You will still be able to get support from IT companies, like HBP Systems, but we will have our hands tied if a new threat which targets Windows Server 2003 is identified.

And that means the software’s performance will suffer, and you’ll become more and more vulnerable to malicious attacks, which might even result in the loss of important data.

My advice is that you should be doing the background work to prepare for an upgrade.

I’d strongly urge you to look at Windows Server 2012 as an alternative. Have a good look at the costs and timeframes involved, and map everything important held through Server 2003 to make sure nothing gets lost.

If you don’t want to switch right away, or there’s a reason why you can’t (for example, legacy software that will only run on Windows 2003) I’d advise being very strict about your backups, and keep a weather eye out on your system to avoid things going horribly wrong.

ACING redundancy or a posting to Azerbaijan, Paul Green took the first option, and so began his climb up the property ladder that has emerged with a Hilton Hotel.

HUMBERSIDE Airport’s fortunes are taking off once more, an audience of business leaders heard. David Laister reports on the exciting developments unfolding at Kirmington as it approaches a very special milestone.

ORTY years on from the first commercial flight, and Humberside Airport is once again in growth mode.

When the first Air Anglia trip to Guernsey left the former RAF Kirmington site in March 1975, it heralded the start of a new industry on the South Bank. Soon followed by the introduction of the first scheduled international service – to Amsterdam – the ‘Schipol hop’ remains the fixed-wing bedrock now, with calls to up daily services from three to four as passenger numbers rise.

But helicopters have brought the biggest expansion in recent years, on the back of traditional and emerging energy sources in the North Sea. Addressing the Bondholders Breakfast event this past month, Marcus Walker, assistant director for regeneration at North Lincolnshire Council – the single local authority from the Humberside days to retain a stake – gave a flavour of life as a ruby anniversary dawns.

“It has been a tough time for the aviation industry as a sector, it was adversely affected more than most by the economic climate,” he said.

“The tourism sector had some really serious problems.” Charting their withdrawal to major centre of population, and highlighting the impact it has had on the likes of Blackpool, Prestwick and Robin Hood, where he said the South Yorkshire airport was “losing money hand over fist”, he said: “Humberside is bucking that trend and actually making money.

From day one, the very beginning, it has been a business airport.

“Now we are at a once in a lifetime opportunity, everything is beginning to complete and come together.”

It is industry that is propelling the growth at the 139 hectare site, purchased by Eastern in August 2012, having been in the hands of Manchester Airports Group (MAG), for 13 years.

“We have Immingham, the biggest port, the biggest offshore wind energy opportunity, 30 per cent of the refinery sector and a £6 billion chemical sector,” Mr Walker said.

Dong Energy announced it is to use helicopters to complement vessels to service Westermost Rough, the wind farm currently being built out of Grimsby, when the weather causes issues. Future wind farms in the planning process are further out, and larger, making aerial access even more appealing.

“Dogger Bank is the size of North Yorkshire, Hornsea spans the distance between Hull and Liverpool. We have the big space in the right place, the last undeveloped deep water estuary in the UK. Industry needs to cluster and industry needs industry logic if it is going to drive down cost. The only place they can do that is the Humber. We are ideally located for once.

“We have been talking about a vision, it is now a reality, and it will be ready for 2018,” he said referring to Able Marine Energy Park, the conduit for many of the jobs and much of the investment in green energy, over and above the already-thriving Grimsby operations and maintenance sector.

“It is a £450 million direct investment, £1 billion in total, it will create 4,100 jobs, as my Dad would say, “proper jobs” and a further 9,000 in the rest of the region,” said Mr Walker. “It doesn’t get any bigger. It is going to create a renaissance in manufacturing, which is already 32 per cent of the local jobs compared to the national average of 10 per cent. We have the biggest enterprise zone in the country. The airport can help drive this forward, we are already looking at creating new routes to make links even stronger. This is really, really big stuff – I compare this to Nissan in the North East. When you look at London Thames Gateway, this is 70 per cent bigger. Nothing bigger than this is going on in the country. We are a hidden secret and we need to break that.”

In 1999, when MAG took an 82.8 per cent share, budget travel was a boom industry. In the early Noughties Ryanair and Easyjet were offering unbelievable deals, with fares to popular European destinations cheaper than a taxi to Kirmington for most.

The entrepreneur behind the Nightel complex at Kirmington told the Bondholders’ Breakfast event: “People were saying there was a need for flats near Humberside Airport, to cut down on journey times, but there weren’t really great places to build them.

“Knowing the operation, I decided to look at solving the problem. When gas was first found in the 70s, you could only drill in one way, straight down. It meant lots of small rigs over pockets of gas. Moving on 30 years all these little rigs need more maintenance and crews go from Humberside to the rigs every day. Rather than 14 days offshore, they sleep on shore and get a taxi to work. Some still do work 14 days, but for most, the bulk in gas, it is unmanned installations.”

He found dealing with then-majority shareholder, MAG, frustrating.

“I didn’t have time to do a full feasibility study and build a proper hotel, and getting Manchester Airport Group to engage was nothing shot of impossible. I called them three or four times, stating what I wanted to do, but they were not interested. Finally I got in touch with them under pseudonym of BP, and explained what I intended to do. Despite earlier brush offs I managed to sign a deal and went and bought a 100 bed unit from an old RAF base, used to hold pilots, which is interesting with where we are heading.”

The modular facility was brought to Humberside, on the 139 hectare site by the A18.

see this opportunity. We are partnered by a huge multi-national company.”

It is a huge name in helicopters too, as the winning of the search and rescue contract with the UK Government proved, which brought another recent opening to Humberside, as part of a £17 million investment as alluded to last month.

“Humberside is not dependent on low cost and that is important, with where the tourist economy went, said Mr Walker. “Our economics are based on KLM, three daily, and 46 per cent of flights are helicopter-based. That is important because it is bringing in money. The only money you make on low cost flights is what you sell in duty free. This is a really good model. We have

now got all the major helicopter firms present at the airport and a perishable hub – posh for really big fridge.”

And, with the steel frame now up, and the largest hangar at the airport well occupied, BAE Systems’ investment in a huge training provision was also lapped up.

“Kids in Scunthorpe look out at Tata Steel and see a sunset industry, but what better way to get them into engineering than playing around with Hawk jets at the airport?” enthused Mr Walker.

And as for the fixed wing flights? “Tourism will come back. KLM is up 4.6 per cent, and more growth may see a fourth flight.”

The sky really is the limit.

Another Windows product is gone

Last year we saw the end of life of Windows XP as owners PCs and Laptops across the country were told to upgrade or leave themselves at the risk of infection from viruses and threats. This year Microsoft will pull the plug on support for Windows Server 2003 - a much bigger issue for businesses if this is the server operating system used to run their business. And when Microsoft “ end of life” a product, they effectively tell businesses, as far as that particular software’s concerned: “You’re on your own.”

But the picture’s not quite so bleak, and you’re not entirely on your own you’ve got the next four months to prepare for the inevitable.

“It is not really a hotel, in the traditional sense. I designed it from my time at BP, knowing people needed to get back, relax have a good shower and have laundry done.”

So when did the plan for the hotel in the traditional sense of the word emerge?

“The airport’s sale to Eastern Group, that’s when it started. I don’t think MAG appreciated what was coming, and reluctance to help us could have killed us. It could have all gone to Norwich. Eastern Group knew the interest, they had been carrying people in the industry for years.

“The plan was to prepare the business case for a proper hotel.

All the brands were looking at the fixed wing numbers and said there wasn’t enough traffic. They didn’t look at helicopters. I could say ‘I had X people for three years; let’s build a hotel’.”

Nightel is now also being

expanded to support a contract with BAE Systems, for students on site. “That’s 100 bedrooms let, the new hotel needs to hurry up,” he joked.

“Now we actually need it, and need it open. I was in talks with three brands, all well known brands, and because we want to aim high, we chose Hilton. It took six months to convince them, but we are now building a hotel.

Nightel is building it, Hilton will put their name to it, we do it on a franchise. Through the help of the council and the airport, we have got it.”

The important date is July 14th, which Microsoft has named as the ‘end of life’ for Windows Server 2003. You won’t immediately notice any difference, and the software will still work, but beyond that date there will be no more system updates or security enhancements, and, if you run into problems, Microsoft won’t help. You will still be able to get support from IT companies, like HBP Systems, but we will have our hands tied if a new threat which targets Windows Server 2003 is identified.

And that means the software’s performance will suffer, and you’ll become more and more vulnerable to malicious attacks, which might even result in the loss of important data.

My advice is that you should be doing the background work to prepare for an upgrade.

I’d strongly urge you to look at Windows Server 2012 as an alternative. Have a good look at the costs and timeframes involved, and map everything important held through Server 2003 to make sure nothing gets lost.

If you don’t want to switch right away, or there’s a reason why you can’t (for example, legacy software that will only run on Windows 2003) I’d advise being very strict about your backups, and keep a weather eye out on your system to avoid things going horribly wrong.

Rosettes to one side, so what would a European exit mean?

E

UROPE is a key issue that looks likely to dominate in the run up to the General Election.

The Conservatives promise a referendum, Labour doesn’t. The Liberal Democrats want the UK to have the largest economy in Europe by 2035, UKIP just want us out of there, with a belief that we will be a stronger global trading nation without it.

But with Grimsby, Immingham and the whole of the Humber facing Europe, would that really be the case?

John Fitzgerald, Associated British Ports’ Humber director, has overseen some massive investments, triggered by some long term contracts with our continental cousins. We have Grimsby River Terminal – a £26 million expansion into the Humber, thanks largely to Volkswagen Group, a German car manufacturer – then Danish-owned Dong Energy rocking up with a further £11 million to fund the port infrastructure required to build and tend to its huge offshore wind stake.

“We are an island economy, we rely on trade and Europe is a major part of that trading pattern for us,” he said.

“We do trade with the rest of the world, but for me the question I would ask is, would a multi-national company looking to invest in the UK be as likely to invest in the UK if it was outside of Europe?

“Would Nissan? Would Toyota?

These are the questions that need to be answered. There’s no doubt Europe needs to be renegotiated and reformed, but I think it is the longer term inward investment risks we need to consider if we were to say we were no longer part of Europe. It is a question that needs to be debated.”

Over the river Siemens has been landed, and up river from Grimsby and Immingham, Able UK at North Killingholme has a memorandum of understanding with Austrian foundation manufacturer Strabag.

Of the importance of Europe to the UK ports community, Mr Fitzgerald said: “You only have to look at the switch (of concentration of business) from the west coast ports to the east coast ports. It happened in the Seventies, funnily enough, when trade with Europe overtook trade with the rest of the world.”

Looking east back to Immingham and the work there, Mr Emery said: “The project at Immingham is critical to that. Phase one is three million tonnes, phase two adds another three million tonnes, and to get to a running rate of six million tonnes will require a successful start of phase two. “It is a good team effort. We work with the Associated British Ports team, we have helped them develop the projects, using some of our experience, as it is funded on the back of a long term contract. We are helping with the commissioning and start-up phase, and share best practice with them.

“We have also had John (Fitzgerald, Humber ports director for ABP) and the team visit the site, and I think it is important.”

Mr Fitzgerald, who this month was awarded for efforts on the North Bank with Green Port Hull as Drax also picked up a gong for renewables

innovation at a Humber event, said: “We are in the commissioning phase with such a major project. There are a few tweaks that need to be done, we are tackling the issues, and volumes are developing. The continuous ship unloaders are performing well, the trains are rolling, and we are just entering the first phase of the additional train capacity.”

Turning to coal, he said: “Coal volumes, because of last year and a mild winder, there are bigger stocks at the power stations, and the price of oil means gas is down, so we are anticipating a much quieter year, but biomass volumes are up and that is always going to be the way it is going to go. It is still difficult to forecast what coal volumes will be. I still think coal will be part of the mix in to the early 2020s. We look after some of the major power stations and they are planning for the longer term.

“We have got to recognise their supply chain will change, and we have got to adapt, as we always have. When we built Humber International Terminal, that was adapting. We are there to service the demands of customers, we don’t create demand ourselves.”

In a global, more competitive market are we better to be part of a bigger place rather than launch out on our own? There are lots of questions and lots of different opinions, but if we are to remain in Europe we need to redefine some elements.”

A step back from the ports, and manufacturing comes to the fore.

“In a manufacturing environment, where you are relying on supply chains, and private investment, you have to be successful, it is as pure as that,” he said. “Take offshore wind, would Siemens have come (if we weren’t in Europe)? If demand is there, the answer is yes, but does it make the decision easier because we are regarded as European?”

Whatever the answers it is a subject that will form part of the decision making process ahead of the trip to the ballot box on May 7, that is a certainty.

Law firm’s new leader PROFESSIONAL SERVICES: Lincolnshire’s largest law firm, Grimsby-headquartered Wilkin Chapman Grange, has welcomed its new chief executive.

Des Mannion takes over from long-serving Julia Whittaker on April 1, as she retires after 28 years.

The past decade has seen her move from practice director to chief executive and partner, when the profession allowed non-solicitors to take such a role, latterly working alongside senior partners Philip Day and Mark Carlton as the business more than doubled turnover to the current £18 million level.

Mr Mannion, an accountant by profession, has been with Grant Thornton for nearly three decades, and heads to Grimsby after three years in the company’s City business advisory office.

RTS and University of Hull forged the partnership back in 2014, as previously reported. The alliance is designed to support and enhance undergraduates’ theoretical studies by way of practical, onsite based training.

The intake of 2015 got involved in classroom sessions, workshops and practical onsite training at Inter Ter minals’ west and east sites in Immingham.

“This type of training means we can infuse strong process safety skills and knowledge into the next generation of high hazard workers,” explained RTS managing director, John Reynolds.

The Health and Safety Executive began 2015 by urging industry to cultivate safer processes across their plants. In doing so, major high hazard sites were told to adopt an holistic approach to ensure vital safety information travels from operators on the ground to leaders in the boardroom.

Mr Reynolds said: “While industry has taken steps forward, as the regulator says, we do need to further improve process safety across the sector. This requires strong leadership, knowledge sharing across workers and other sites and the implementation and continual review of safety systems.

“But what about those preparing to enter industry? Well, the partnership with Hull gives us the opportunity to embed key safety knowledge in the minds of young students.

“This way we are able to simulate a top-down and bottom-up culture change in industry, focusing both on those already in the sector and those preparing to enter it.”

EXPORT advice is to be offered at two events on the South Bank later this month.

World Trade Centre Hull & Humber, in association with UK Trade & Investment, hosts Selling Your Products and Services Overseas, at Forest Pines Hotel, Broughton on Wednesday, March 25, and The Innovation Centre, Europarc, Grimsby, on Thursday, March 26.

With the sub-heading “not difficult, just different”, it will focus on how more than 1,000 businesses in the Humber sell products and services overseas, with products and services ranging from consultancy to

cardboard boxes, software to sausages. Both start at 7.45am, concluding by 10am.

A spokesman for World Trade Centre Hull & Humber said: “Some exporters are small, some very large.

Some sell directly through websites, others have agents overseas.

“For many it will be their most profitable business.

“There is lots of evidence to show that companies trading overseas are generally more profitable and able to withstand economic shocks than those that do not.

“This event will give a short introduction to trading overseas, setting out five simple steps you need

to take from deciding whether this is for you, to getting paid and growing your market share.”

The spokesman said many would-be exporters are surprised by the amount of support available to help such ventures succeed.

The event will see breakfast over networking, before UKTI video Britain’s Best Kept Secret will be screened, with a presentation advising on best practice, and a case study of a successful business.

Structural engineering fused with architecture

DECISION to push forward architectural elements of a business built on strong structural engineering credentials is reaping rewards. CR Parrott Consultants Ltd is embarking on a number of exciting projects.

The Scunthorpe-headquartered business opened a large office on Grimsby’s Europarc 18 months ago, since then taking on a director of architecture and further expanding the team. Mike Dixon heads up the Innovation Centre base, where significant investment in the latest design and planning software, twinned with high level training, is bringing rapid results.

Mr Dixon said: “A big thing for us is a much bigger push on architecture. Chris Parrott, the business owner, has taken the decision to appoint me, which is part of a major step forward. The company has made a significant investment in current architectural thinking in regard to staff training and personnel.

“In terms of the company we are improving and developing our office here in Grimsby. It has become the architectural office, and we work hand in hand with the technical engineers in Scunthorpe. We are getting some exciting new projects coming in.

“There is a great buzz in the team here, and that is something I am looking to develop going forward onto larger, more prestigious projects. That is our mission.”

is readily understood by third parties. By using BIM the risk of mistakes or discrepancies is reduced, and abortive costs minimised.

“We have seen it is going to be the standard,” said Mr Dixon. “It is opening up new avenues for us and we believe we are the first in the area to be fully BIM compliant.

Any government funded project will require the use of BIM by 2016, and we are already seeing the results of this. It is a great advantage when it comes to quality and a step-change in what we can achieve. “People are very motivated and are pushing on with this. It has been a substantial investment, but it is all very positive. It is quite a leap Chris has taken, a lot of people wouldn’t have done that, but he took that decision, it was a major move.

“We feel we are really waving a flag for quality, as a robust

structural engineering and architectural practice, covering all the other points in between.”

Sarah Perry has just qualified as an architect, underlining the people development aspect of the business. She has completed the Royal Institute of British Architects distance learning programme, with examiners impressed by the training offered by the business. Mrs Perry said: “I came to CR Parrott as an architectural assistant, and studied the final part of my qualification here with Chris’ support and assistance. He helped me with the exams and case study, and now that Mike has joined the company, for the last year, I have some direct mentoring from another architect as well, which is really useful. It offers full circle support and clear progression for me.” Mr Parrott is delighted with the progress being made on all fronts. He said: “We have fused the

two elements of architecture and structural engineering together, which brings a much more realistic approach to all our work, and that can only help the client.

We are on the way, with what we were seeing in Grimsby.”

Of the training, he said: “The processes we had here, prior to Mike arriving, were of a sufficient standard to train architects towards the final level – using the RIBA distance learning programme – and Sarah is living proof of that. Now we have a mentor who can move that on.

Sarah has done it the hard way. It is easy to go to college, but what she has done is a real achievement. She has also had a lot of experience job running.

“RIBA has explained to us that the training we have, and the type of jobs we take on, prove that we are encompassing everything, which is a real fillip.”

A PRESENTATION at a networking event has introduced CR Parrott to the Graduate Advancement Programme, a 12-week funded placement.

Launched in October last year by North East Lincolnshire Council, new recruit Alex Blanchard is now on a nine month extended contract with the business.

Chris Parrott, pictured, said: “Alex went to Newcastle University as I did, he studied architecture,

came through this system and is now one of our shining lights. We are investing in both senior staff and new staff training more.

“This is how good networking can be, it all came from an event at Abbys in Grimsby. I had a chat and the next thing I knew I had received CVs from graduates out there looking for employment.”

Financed through the Regional Growth Fund initially, he is now on the CR Parrott payroll. “This

system works,” Mr Parrott said.

“It is good for both parties and plays down the risk of taking on new staff.”

Mr Blanchard, 23, said: “After I completed my university course I undertook work placements in Yorkshire and Germany before I settled down in a more focused architectural role. It is great to be with a business at the forefront of the industry, leading in what it does.”

She said: “A lot of graduates think that just because they have got a degree it gives them an automatic right to go in at a certain level and be on the £30,000 to £40,000 wage bracket.

“More often than not you have to start at the bottom, work your way up and be prepared to do a free work trial to be noticed.”

Third year business management student Luke Townsend, 20, of Humberston, said he found the event really helpful.

“When you go on the internet and search for graduate jobs in Grimsby there’s nothing.

“The good thing about this event is that it has opened up the doors to the opportunities there are in Grimsby.

“I have spoken to a couple of employers and they have given some advice on what they are looking for.

“They are looking for more than a degree. It’s also about extra curricular activities.”

As well as the business breakfast, employability week featured a variety of other events, including team building activities, CV writing sessions and careers advice, lessons on self-management and mock job interviews.

Trade links could just be ‘TTIP’ of the iceberg

THE FUTURE of Britain’s small businesses could be threatened if the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is introduced, according to a senior northern Lincolnshire accountant.

Jenny Costigan, of Forrester Boyd, said the deal could have a huge impact, with cheaper labour and materials posing a risk.

“TTIP would bring benefits to big business, but SMEs seem set to lose out,” Miss Costigan said.

“A huge majority of UK firms are SMEs and they have been behind the economy’s growth for a long time. At the last Autumn Statement, the Government recognised this and rewarded them with a raft of measures designed to help. Now, their very existence could be hanging in the balance.”

The aim of TTIP is to create a free market on both sides of the Atlantic and remove regulations, but a good many of these currently work in favour of small businesses. The

A further problem for SMEs is that some councils operate schemes that aim to strengthen communities and help small local suppliers. The Government recently pledged support to smaller businesses by setting a target for 25 per cent of its supplier contracts to be fulfilled by SMEs by May 2015, however, these arrangements would be deemed illegal under TTIP; further compromising the growth prospects of the UK’s SMEs.

O mark its 40th anniversary UK Steel Enterprise has announced the launch of a £40,000 initiative to support the next generation of entrepreneurs in Britain’s steel-making regions.

A subsidiary of Tata Steel, the regeneration-focused organisation is inviting those working with young entrepreneurs in education or training the opportunity to apply for a share of £40,000, available through the new 40:40 Challenge.

Launched in 1975 to support the economic development of industry areas, UK Steel Enterprise has since overseen investments of £88 million, assisting more than 6,000 businesses and creating more than 75,000 jobs.

Now, in celebration of their ruby anniversary, the organisation is

inviting business proposals from the next generation of entrepreneurs, with the judges on the lookout for those projects that show imagination, innovation and involve as many other young people as possible.

“We’re looking for business proposals that demonstrate creativity, inclusiveness and forward thinking,” said Keith Williams, UK Steel Enterprise regional manager.

“We are focused on supporting the continued economic development of steel areas of the UK by investing in growing companies, but we also want to support young people to be the entrepreneurs of the future.

“Through the 40:40 Challenge, budding young business minds can apply for funding to help get their project off the ground, or to help take it to the next level.”

enterprise organisations and local authorities are now being invited to work with students and learners aged 18 or under to bid for between £500 and £10,000 of the £40,000 fund.

Mr Willams said: “The projects can cover a range of activities and ideas, provided they are centred on helping develop the entrepreneurs that will shape our steel communities in the coming years.

“Whether it’s an engineering or recycling initiative, a community scheme or school business idea, we’re excited to see what ideas our future business leaders submit.”

Month in Review Froude’s warm welcome ENERGY: Esvagt Froude, a new generation service operation vessel for the offshore wind industry, arrived in Grimsby for the first time this past month.

She is on a maiden contract with Siemens Wind Power for Dong Energy’s Westermost Rough.

The vessel is the result of Danish, Norwegian and German co-operation, bringing lessons learned from oil and gas to wind.

Siemens has chartered both Froude, and sister vessel Faraday, from the Danish shipping firm Esvagt.

The vessel is 84m long and 18m wide, with a gantry to allow engineers on board to “walk to work” on an offshore turbine.

Stationery firm closed MANUFACTURING: Humberston-based Cardinal Brands is facing liquidation, with all 25 jobs lost.

The Wilton Road stationery supplies business closed last month, with a hearing to decide the firm’s destiny taking place this week.

Cardinal had sustained substantial losses, over two years, having been saved nine years ago in a management buy-out, then bought out again three years ago.

Three years of solid growth in new car registrations celebrated THREE solid years of new car sales growth has been celebrated.

Sue Robinson, director of the National Franchised Dealers Association, which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle retailers across the UK, welcomed the latest new car registration figures from theSociety of Motor Manufacturers & Traders.

She said: “It is extremely positive to see the new car market has now achieved 36 consecutive months of growth – increasing 12 per cent over the period.”

Figures, released this month for February, traditionally one of the quietest months of the year ahead of a number plate change in March, showed the market grew 12 per cent year-on-year with 76,958 new cars registered, achieving a year-to-date rise of 8.3 per cent.

Port of Grimsby, together with Immingham and Humber Sea Terminal at North Killingholme, play a critical role in supply to the UK and European market, with a large share in the total vehicle handling market. The past month saw a second visit of

Planet Ace to Grimsby River Terminal, the largest vessel to grace it to date, as highlighted on page 12.

Fleet buyers drove this increase with registrations up 19.9 per cent in February, while the private market saw an increase of 3.4 per cent.

Ms Robinson continued: “Consumers appear to be less reluctant to commit to new vehicles as employment prospects improve, and inflation comes down to a record-equalling low of 0.3 per cent following cheaper fuel and lower energy prices.

“Increased sales are supported by strong manufacturer deals and low cost finance offers that are encouraging consumers to buy.

“We anticipate the market to continue to grow, and have strong expectations for the 15-plate change where customers will be likely to take advantage of a range of substantial discounts and savings, in addition to a variety of low rate finance packages being made available.”

Ports team charts an exciting Humber era A

PELHAM Chartered Accountants’ tax manager, Lesley Rhodes, has celebrated 25 years’ service, as she continues to enjoy her role.

Having begun her career with a seven-year stint at Grimsby tax office, and four years at Forrester Boyd, she joined what was Bygott Burn & Co as its tax manager.

She stayed with the business when it changed to Burn and Co, and later when it was incorporated into Carr Jemmett – now Pelham – and moved to Grimsby’s Dudley Street.

“I really enjoy the role,” she said. “It’s constantly changed over the years.

“I’ve just been reading another update focusing on April 6. The changes then include personal allowances, pensions and National Insurance contributions.”

It was important to be on top of the changes to keep clients on the right side of HMRC, she said.

“It’s the variety of the job I’ve always enjoyed.

There is something different every day, whether it’s to the rules or with the clients.

“Everybody at Pelham is really nice and it’s good to be part of the team here. The time has gone very quickly.”

Outside of work, she enjoys reading and walking her labrador Tilly in her home village of Waltham and on Cleethorpes beach.

New chamber president HULL & Humber Chamber of Commerce has elected Steve Eastwood as its 178th president.

Mr Eastwood, who works for Lorica Insurance Brokers, takes over from lawyer Tim Durkin.

Mr Eastwood has worked with many businesses across the Humber during his 30 years in the insurance profession and has served as president of the Insurance Institute of Hull.

Capt Andrew Firman replaces him as Humber harbour master.

Capt Martin Gough, formerly Humber dock master, has taken up the new role of marine training manager, reflecting the importance ABP is placing on its industry-leading marine apprenticeship scheme. It is being expanded this year to include the first intake of marine pilotage apprentices.

Capt Graham Hodge has been appointed as Immingham dock master, with Capt Mike Dunn as Hull and Goole dock master and Capt Phil Christy as Grimsby dock master and operations manager.

The company has also seen changes with the pilotage service, with Matt Booth moving up to the role of deputy pilotage manager on the Humber, and Andy Swift becoming deputy harbour master and pilotage operations manager.

Mr Cowing said: “These are exciting times for the Humber with planned growth on both banks to support the offshore renewables industry as well as plans to relocate VTS Humber from Spurn Point to a new integrated Humber Marine Control Centre at Grimsby.

“Historically the ABP Humber ports and Humber Estuary Services (HES) have been run as separate marine functions, but the time is now right for a more

integrated operational approach while still maintaining the transparency and impartiality of HES for the provision of pilotage and conservancy to all river users.

“An integrated approach removes unnecessary duplication and demarcation to provide a more streamlined and efficient service for the ABP ports, while HES will continue to provide high levels of service and support for customers at the non-ABP locations

throughout the harbour area and the wider stakeholder groups.

“The concept of an integrated marine team should serve us well in managing future growth and changing traffic patterns in the Humber and sits well with the concept of continuous improvement enshrined in the Port Marine Safety Code, the national standard against which all harbour authorities are measured.”

Great career is the bottom line FURTHER successes in the latest round of accountancy examinations have been announced by two South Bank accountancy practices.

Three of Forrester Boyd’s recruits – Jamie Thomson, Samantha Walker and Katie Watson – have all passed their final examination of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Jamie, a former Healing School pupil, joined Forrester Boyd’s Grimsby office in 2010 from Franklin College, while Samantha and Katie, former pupils of Queen Elizabeth Grammar School at Alford and Caistor Yarborough School, joined the Louth office in 2009 and 2012.

At TurnerWarran in Brigg, 20-year-old Victoria Wright has just joined the firm, embarking on her training to become a chartered accountant.

She has almost completed her AAT Level Two and will be starting the next level next month, Victoria said: “I have been studying for just over a year but, with the support of managing director Kevin Turner, and being able to work in practice, this will really help me with my studies and enable me to develop.”

She will spend a further two years studying before she is AAT qualified then she will continue with a further three years to complete ACCA. Keith Hunt, office manager, said: “Victoria is a great addition to the firm. She is very passionate and I am sure she will excel here.”

Mr Turner added: “The firm will be putting Victoria through her studies and will help and support her along the way. We have two members of staff who have just completed the level Victoria is currently working on so there will always be help and support for her.”

SCUNTHORPE-based Harlequin Office Furniture has added three new people to the team.

The 25-year-old business has brought in graphic designer Yaqub Hussain, sales support Mandy Smith and accounts assistant Hannah Riley.

More new staff are joining in the coming months.

Director Fiona Teesdale said: “We’re pleased to be able to offer local people local jobs, along with progression opportunities within Harlequin. We have grown over the years and have a clear vision of where we want to go in 2015. Having enthusiastic people join our team is a great start to the first few months.

Stocks rising as Trent Lifting business moves into new base

S

CUNTHORPE’S Stocks Group is hitting new heights as it unveils a new base for Trent Lifting – built predominantly in-house with sister companies – while rolling out a new e-commerce offering to the vital sector.

The £11 million turnover business has developed the first phase of a three-and-a-half acre site in East Common Lane, having held off during the economic crisis that saw BJW enter administration.

Now, with a new managing director, the project was reignited, and a new building is now home to Trent, moving from Brigg Road.

Chris Claypole, who took up his post 18 months ago, said: “We bought the land in 2008, and at that time we were going to put BJW Cranes up here. We had plans drawn up, and started putting steel up in 2009, but the crane company went into administration.

“We then started planning for Trent Lifting to come in to the building, and extended the main building to create more office and workshop space.”

Stocks’ companies, Site Services (steel) Scotton Construction (groundwork and civils) and Ashthorn Electrical brought the project together, overseen by Green Cross Health and Safety Systems, another arm of the Insider Top 300 SME Businesses to Work For group.

Now the business, headed by David Sanderson, is launching an e-commerce site, supplying lifting equipment to complement the counter sale, hire, inspection, repair and maintenance offer it is known for.

“We are going to start off with a focused supply and grow that business. We have had a very, very limited presence before, this will be something different.

Engineering and UECC. Of the rest of the site, for which Trent takes up just less than an acre, Mr Claypole – who has been with the group for 11 years, said: “It is a possibility for the rest of the group to come here, and also some talk about some standalone units, and

one or two people have expressed an interest in taking a larger part of the ground.”

Property professionals have expressed frustration at a lack of high quality available units, in these pages in recent months, so demand appears to be there, as do new

markets with the Able Marine Energy Park emerging. It will be a huge construction site, then a high volume lifting operation across the manufacturing supply chain.

Looking ahead, Mr Claypole said: “We think there will be opportunities. We are currently

taking time to consolidate, having had so much going on, but we have some plans to offer more services.

“We work closely across the group, the steel company uses lifting gear, the electrical company uses man lifts, it is all connected, as the build project underlined.”

National study signals the return of the speculative development LAST year was a record breaking year for industrial property take-up, with 23 national and regional records broken according to the latest figures from DTZ, the global property operator.

Total UK take-up reached 32.6 million sq ft over 2014, the highest since 2010, driven largely by improving economic sentiment and retailers expanding their logistics networks in response to the growth in online shopping.

Global property operator DTZ Research’s Industrial Property Times report for the second half of 2014 also revealed that a record 14.8 million sq ft of grade A space was taken over the last 12 months.

The report also highlights the re-emergence of speculative development in response to the lack of available prime space, a concern voiced by commercial property professionals.

A total of 9.1 million sq ft was taken through ‘build-to-suit’ deals, double the 2013 total.

Developers are largely building storage and distribution facilities and targeting locations with good access to the road network, DTZ said.

Take-up was strong for manufacturing (8.8 million sq ft), logistics (6.8 million sq ft) and retail sectors (12.7 million sq ft).

The report found that industrial prime rents are beginning to increase nationally, given the rise in activity and low level of grade A availability, which is driving competition between occupiers.

Michael Green, research analyst at DTZ, said: “Looking ahead to 2015, the need for speculative development will continue with more schemes across the UK set to be announced. We also anticipate high levels of take-up in 2014 to be

maintained over the next five years as industrial output increases and occupiers look to increase their UK footprint, although continued difficulties in the Eurozone may have a dampening effect.”

With available stock levels for Grade A or modern premises continuing to fall across Yorkshire and the Humber, a number of locations and occupier demand rising, particularly in the 30,000 to 80,000 sq ft size range, has meant speculative development is back after a seven year absence, according to DTZ. Circa 600,000 sq ft is currently under construction.

On Grimsby’s Europarc a 126,000 sq ft development is being brought forward by Wykeland, ideal for warehousing, distribution or production.

leading national survey of values and trends in the holiday and caravan park markets has revealed clear reasons for optimism, based on their performance in 2014.

The annual market report from the specialist leisure team at national chartered surveyors Sanderson Weatherall said the picture of the industry, vital for Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire coastline, is encouraging, compared to preceding years, with the number of park sales included well up on the 2013 figure.

Warning against complacency, however, the report says the markets remained somewhat patchy, with relatively few potential buyers able to be selective about purchases. It also says that business profitability, actual or potential, continued to exert a major influence on prices.

Chris Tucker, partner at Sanderson Weatherall, said: “Holiday parks clearly enjoyed a strong trading year in 2014.

“Demand for residential parks remained relatively strong too, provided these weren’t over-priced, relative to pitch fee income, as there was clearly a maximum the market was prepared to pay, compared to rental yields.”

Mr Tucker said the prices of both static holiday and touring pitches rose slightly in 2014, with those of residential pitches remaining steady.

The average sale price of touring park pitches increased from £7,500 to £8,300, with static caravan pitches rising from £15,000 to £16,000. The gap between the highest and lowest figures – now £21,000 and £11,000 respectively – narrowed slightly. Residential park pitch value remained

unchanged at £24,000, though prices ranged from £17,000 to £33,000.

Turning to 2015, Mr Tucker said: “We expect these broadly positive trends in the holiday and caravan park markets to continue, helped by factors such as the long-awaited rise in real earnings being maintained and loan finance becoming more widely available. We also expect last month’s Autumn Statement announcements of a continued freeze on fuel duty, Stamp Duty reforms aimed at boosting residential property transactions, and £15 billion worth of infrastructure upgrades, including 84 road improvement projects, to have stimulating effects on these markets.”

orth East Lincolnshire Council’s planning service has beaten national targets for the number of major applications it dealt with ahead of schedule in 2014.

A total of 48 major applications were received in the calendar year – up from 34 in 2013 – and 89 per cent of applications that needed a decision were determined within the target time of 13 weeks.

This is up from 68 per cent in the previous year, well above the target of 60 per cent set nationally.

A total of 86 per cent were approved. Much of this accelerated success has been attributed to the innovative Major Applications Planning Service (Maps), which was launched at the end of 2013.

Maps offers an enhanced service for developers seeking advice prior to submitting a planning application for large scale development.

Several schemes benefited from the service last year, including the Royal Dahlman waste to energy plant in Moody Lane, a housing development in Cleethorpes and two new hotels, Grimsby’s Holiday Inn and Cleethorpes’ Premier Inn. Councillor David Watson, portfolio holder for environment and housing at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “Every major application submitted to the council represents a significant investment in the borough.
