Mum Of The Year 2014 - vote for your winner Lorna Auckland

Karen Barton

Name: Lorna Auckland, of Grimsby. Nominated by: George, aged 17 months. Why: “My name is George. I’m getting a little help to do this. My mummy always makes me happy – she’s so much fun! She plays games and catches me when I run. She wipes my runny nose and kisses my baby toes. She’s a super mummy, too – she goes to work and catches robbers and bad guys. She is a police lady and when I grow up, I want to be just like her. I’ve even got my own police car that I drive, just like hers. My mummy is also a foster carer with my mammy (I have a mummy and a mammy and know I’m a very lucky boy, made for them by the special doctor at a magical baby hospital). My mummy is super awesome, even when she makes me eat vegetables or go for a nap. I had to pick between my mummy and mammy, but mammy won’t be sad because she agrees mummy is the best in the whole universe.”

Donna Clarke

Name: Sharon Brown, of Louth. Nominated by: Louise Borman. Why: “I am nominating my mum as she has been a massive support to me over the last 11 years. When I found out at 16 I was pregnant, my mum supported me the whole way. I had a very bad birth with my daughter, which resulted in an emergency C-section and two blood transfusions. Mum got up to do the night feeds and helped look after my baby while I recovered. At the age of two, following an ear operation, my daughter was diagnosed with autism and global development delay, and I was told she may never talk. My mum was there for me, coming to appointments and helping me with tough decisions, including moving my daughter to a special educational needs school from mainstream. With her help, I got the qualifications I wanted and my dream job in the police. My mum is my rock and I wouldn’t be in the place I am now. She is a star – and deserves to be treated like one.”

Jill Ladlow

Liz Griggs

Name: Jill Ladlow, of Humberston. Nominated by: Aimee Doyley. Why: “Jill is an amazing lady; loving, caring and beautiful. In 2010, my dad – her brother – was involved in an accident at work and tragically lost his life at Pinderfields Hospital, in Wakefield. She took me and my twin brother, Liam, under her wing, providing everything we needed. My aunt moved me into her family home and treated me like one of her own. I had my own room. When I had low days, she was always on a high and always worried about how everyone else was feeling, never thinking of herself. I feel like she didn’t grieve properly for her brother, and put our feelings before hers. I lived at her home for two years before buying a house of my own. Ever since the accident, we have become the tightest family around. Auntie Jill deserves everything as she has always made sure she has given us her everything.”

Name: Liz Griggs, of Waltham. Nominated by: Aimee Griggs-Firth. Why: “A few years ago, I was suffering with anorexia, self harm and depression. This was such a low point in my life but my mum made me realise that life can get better. She stood by me when times were so tough, and helped me beat my demons. She really is one in a million and I am so proud to call her not only my mum but also my best friend. A few years back, mum was diagnosed with breast cancer, which shocked the whole family. Throughout radiotherapy and chemotherapy, she never moaned or complained, even when she was in pain. She is one of the strongest women I have ever known; the main reason I look up to her. She really is a true inspiration. We are both 100 per cent better now, and I can’t thank mum enough for the support, care and love she has shown me. Our mother and daughter bond will forever be growing strong.”

Carol Robinson

Lea Robinson

Debbie Smith

Leanne Curtis

Name: Donna Clarke, of Cleethorpes. Nominated by: Stacie Clarke. Why: “We simply couldn’t ask for a better mum. Since she was a teenager, she has helped care for our Nana after a serious stroke, which led her to having to learn to write, talk and walk again. She was always there, no matter what. Mum has been a part of Girl Guiding for more than 10 years, committed to her Thursday evenings to help her girls, and other nights, too, for Brownies or Rainbows. They are, in a way, like her own children. She has also helped out with the production and choreography of the Grimsby’s Gang Show. Last year, her 15-year-old daughter, Alicia, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. She never crumpled and used her strength to help Alicia raise money for research into cancer – still looking after her two youngest children, aged five and one at the time. We’ve never seen a woman so strong or so composed when the world around you seems to be shattering. After going through what no mother should, she still came out the other end smiling.”

Name: Leanne Curtis, of Cleethorpes. Nominated by: Maddy Haxwood. Why: “Not only is my daughter-in-law Leanne mum of the year, but the bravest too. She has been through so much. Last year Leanne was pregnant with my grandson, Freddie, and developed breast cancer. She went through so much trauma; not only an operation while pregnant but also the birth and then chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She is a wonderful wife to my son, James, and a wonderful, loving mother to Freddie and Georgia. I am so proud of her and she has been a brick. I just want to say I love her so much. I am the proudest mum and grandma there could ever be.”

Mum of the Year 2014 Sponsored by

Name: Carol Robinson, of Immingham. Nominated by: Nikki Robinson. Why: “My mum is my best friend and the most caring person I know. When my brother died 10 years go, mum was the rock who held our family together and kept strong no matter how much she was hurting. Since then, mum has beaten breast cancer and recovered well from a stroke. No matter what she is going through, her husband, her children and her grandchildren will always come first. Mum is always at the end of the phone if I need a moan or, very often, the odd loan. She isn’t a big animal lover but she still babysits my dog, Harley, when I go to work for a 12-hour shift. Mum is one in a million; simply the best, in fact. She has had it rough over the years and I just want her to know that I, my sister and two brothers love her so very much (and dad as well!). They broke the mould when they made Carol Robinson.”

Sharon Brown

Name: Karen Barton, from Grimsby. Nominated by: Bethany and Daniel Jackson. Why: “Mum is so special to my brother and I because last year she got the terrible news that she had breast cancer. She’s battled through six sessions of chemotherapy and a double breast operation while still smiling and helping to raise £1,000 for the Macmillan nurses. She has just finished four weeks of radiotherapy and yet she still managed to carry on working. Now she has her wedding to look forward to in September. We are so proud of you mum, love you forever.”

Name: Lea Robinson, of Cleethorpes. Nominated by: Lacey Robinson. Why: “Mum suffered with cervical cancer at the same time her husband was rushed to hospital. Her husband sadly passed away one month before she began her treatment. Luckily, mum survived cancer and is better now. She has five children and we are all still living with her. I can only imagine how she feels. Mum should be rewarded for her hard work; she is an inspiration to an awful lot of friends and family – and I want her to know that.”

Gill Thomason Name: Gill Thomason, of Holton-le-Clay. Nominated by: Emily Thomason. Why: “In 1988, my mum tragically lost her first-born child, aged three months, to cot death. Despite her loss and heartache, she helped others by raising hundreds of pounds for the Cot Death Society; through that she enabled Grimsby’s Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital to have new, updated baby monitors in the late 1980s. She has inspired me to help people. I work for a local housing association, helping people who, in some cases, are vulnerable. In 2009, Gill suffered a stroke, which caused her to lose confidence, but again, she got up, fought back and recovered. I am so proud of her and I just want to give something back and show her how much I love her. I can’t thank her enough for all the love and support she has given me and others over the years.”

Name: Debbie Smith, of Cleethorpes. Nominated by: Jennifer Smith. Why: “For the past eight years I’ve been battling an incurable disease and have undergone more than 30 operations in various hospitals and my mum has been my rock. She has never ever missed a visit, putting everything on hold to make sure she was by my side. She spent months travelling to Castle Hill Hospital every morning to be with me. Then she would travel home in the afternoon to pick up my fiance and father, and travel straight back. Although I’m now 26, she insists on coming to every hospital appointment with me and always helps me see the positive. She deserves some recognition and deserves to be made to feel as special as she is. She truly is one in a million and with her by my side, I’ve overcome so much.

Gill Woodward Name: Gill Woodward, of Cleethorpes. Nominated by: Sarah Woodward. Why: “Mum has been there for me so much this past year. I had a baby but had to have an emergency C-section at 31 weeks for severe pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome. I live in London; she and dad remortgaged their own house so they could buy a flat for my partner and I to live in. She drove all the way from Cleethorpes when I was admitted, stayed three days and then, when it looked like I was getting discharged without having to deliver, drove home to go to work. That day I got worse; she found out as she was pulling up on the drive, so grabbed a kebab, got back in the car and drove all the way back to London. I was in hospital for a week and she stayed the entire time. While I was in hospital, my car was broken into and written off. She convinced dad to let me have his Mazda 6, and they bought themselves a smaller one. Since then she has put me up at her house in Cleethorpes every other week during my maternity leave, set me up with a network of new friends and supported us. She does nightshifts when I’m tired. I wake in the morning and the day’s bottles are sterilised. I don’t need to worry, despite mum being out every day herself. We’re moving back north now, and she is giving us the deposit money for a new place as we don’t have any savings. She is amazing and has done everything without being asked.”

Leading the way with treatments BEAUTY At The Gate owners Samantha and Paul Beatty are delighted to have sponsored this year’s Mum Of The Year competition.

They said: “It’s a great way for us to give something back to the community as a thank-you for the support we have received since we opened and it’s really satisfying to be able to treat every finalist to a well-deserved pampering session at the salon. “We are also looking forward to treating the lucky winner for the next year with a treatment every single month.” Beauty At The Gate, in Holton-le-Clay, which has only been open for three months, has more than 3,500 followers on its Facebook page, where every Monday it gives away free treatments to its followers in the #makemymonday giveaway. The salon provides a wide range of innovative treatments and only offers the highest quality brands, including Environ, Elemis, A-Lift, HD Brows and the amazing virtually pain-free waxing system from Lycon. The salon is about to launch Bio-Sculpture Gel nails, which means ladies can say goodbye to damaging acrylic nails. The launch will see all Bio-Sculpture treatments reduced by 20 per cent throughout April. Constantly looking at ways of improving services, April sees Beauty At The Gate launch a home tint test postal service for LVL Lashes and HD Brows. Clients currently visit the salon 24-48 hours before the treatment to complete a patch test. Sam said: “It is a legal requirement for our clients to have patch tests, but we appreciate how difficult it can be; we have working women

The eye treatment that is taking the UK by storm LVL Lashes is the beauty treatment taking the UK by storm, providing women with a revolutionary alternative to lash extensions and traditional lash perming. Lift, Volume and Length Lashes utilises innovative techniques, silicon shields and serums to gently lift and straighten, giving thicker and more voluminous lashes. The results can last 4-6 weeks and there’s no need for mascara. LVL is much kinder to natural lashes, as traditional perming curls and lash extensions involves adhesive. HD Brows were established as a must-have enhancement, used by X Factor contestants

and more celebs. A unique seven-step process is used to create a bespoke shape. Techniques involved in creating HD Brows include threading, waxing and tinting. You can have a soft, natural look or full-on glamorous brows that demand attention. Katie Waddingham, pictured above, had her LVL Lashes and HD Brows done at Beauty At The Gate, which has a special offer for both treatments for only £55. ● For more information about Beauty At The Gate, the services and treatments, visit www.beautyatthegate.co.uk or call 01472 289555.
