Eyes of nation fixed on resort IT’S been almost a year since Cleethorpes was announced as the host of the 2016 National Armed Forces Day event and now, at last, the eyes of the nation will be fixed on the resort as the big weekend arrives.
Over the past few months, we’ve been getting a steady stream of information about what we can expect to see heading into the resort by air, land and sea, to celebrate the dedicated efforts of servicemen and women, past and present. There will be awe-inspiring displays from all three armed forces, including aerial shows from the Lincolnshire-based Red Arrows, a Battle of Britain memorial flight, the appearance of parachute display teams, while the Royal Navy Black Cats helicopters are also due to take to the skies. In the water, Scottish-based HMS Blyth will be visiting the South Bank shores, along with other vessels. And back on land, vehicles such as the AS90, a Warrior and a Terrier will be among some of the highlights in the military villages. While the momentum has been building towards this weekend over the past few months, we’ve been speaking to veterans around the area about their careers in the Armed Forces who have shared some incredible stories from their involvement in conflicts around the world. If you’ve missed these, they can be found in our dedicated Armed Forces Day section on our website at www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/ national-ar med-forces-day Looking ahead, over the next few pages you’ll find a complete guide to what’s happening over what promises to be one of the most memorable
weekends in the history of Cleethorpes. Friday will see the festivities get underway with a series of spectacular live music performances from the likes of the Air Cadets Band, and the 1st and 2nd Scots Pipes And Drums Ban, climaxing with a fireworks display at dusk. Then there’s the day everyone has been waiting for. Up to 100,000 people are expected to descend on the resort on Saturday, including Prime Minister David Cameron and Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, for the parade of servicemen and women, the aforementioned schedule of military hardware displays and so much more. Make sure you don’t miss a thing by checking out our full run-down of what to see, not to mention the best way to get there. There’s even more to look forward to on Sunday with another stunning air show being lined up featuring daredevil pilots commanding aerobatic aircraft in the skies above Cleethorpes. Completing the package, traders offering unique and bespoke gifts, street entertainment including a zip wire and bungee trampoline and a whole array of food and drink stalls will be dotted about the resort throughout the weekend. One thing is for sure, everybody will be doing all they can to not only make sure the Armed Forces are suitably honoured, but also ensure Cleethorpes is done proud under the glare of the national spotlight.

Prince and Prime Minister will join celebrations COMING TO RESORT: British Prime Minister David Cameron. Below, Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, will represent the Royal family.
THE Prime Minister and Royalty will be among those attending the Armed Forces Day celebrations in Cleethorpes.
Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, will represent the Royal family. The Field Marshal, will join Prime Minister David Cameron in the resort. Mr Cameron, along with Prince Andrew, attended last year’s event in Guildford which featured a flypast from the Red Arrows and live music from The Jam. The Duke of Kent served in the Armed Forces in the UK and overseas for 21 years, and more recently, has made a number of visits to both Iraq and Afghanistan to visit his regiments when they were engaged in combat operations in those regions. Back in May, the Prime Minister confirmed he will be in Cleethorpes for Armed Forces Day – no matter whether he is on the winning or losing end of the EU referendum result just two days earlier. “Whatever happens, as long as North East Lincolnshire remains part of the United Kingdom, my intention is to be there,” said the PM, who has been leading the remain campaign. “I’ve always gone to these events in the past and I’m happy to commit to it again.” He told the Telegraph: “I think Armed Forces Day is a successful way of celebrating the work our Armed Forces do and the commitment of their families.” He said staff had already briefed him about Cleethorpes, telling him that he could expect another great spectacle this time around having attended Guildford last year. “I hear they are doing a beach landing!” he exclaimed. “I’ve been to events in Stirling and in Guildford in the past and I’m sure Cleethorpes will put on an amazing show.” MP for Cleethorpes Martin Vickers is on the opposite side of the EU referendum debate to his Conservative leader but said it was important for the country to move on after the vote. “I welcome the confirmation that the Prime Minister will be attending what I’m sure will be a magnificent event and it shows his commitment to our service men and women,” said Mr Vickers. “I think his attendance is a clear indication, like he has always said, that he will respect the

We would have been surprised if he was not coming. “I would welcome The Prime Minister to Cleethorpes to give that support to our Armed Forces and our veterans and their families. I shall be very pleased to see him on the day. This is the first time it has been in a non-city area. It is a big coup for us. Next year it will be going back to a city area.”

Official start to
Armed Forces Day celebrations
AFTER months of planning “excitement and pride” took over as National Armed Forces Day festivities finally got underway with three flag ceremonies led by a procession of military vehicles.
flags were transported to Grimsby by a lightly armoured vehicle. It was raised by the Army outside the Fishing Heritage Centre at noon before the final flag was transported through the raised Corporation Bridge and on to Immingham in an offshore raiding craft. Corporation Road was closed for much of the day to allow the vessel to pass through the gateway, for the final flag to be raised outside Immingham’s Council Offices. Speaking after the Grimsby service, brigadier James Carr-Smith, from York, who led the ceremony, said: “Hopefully the general public will join me in celebrating and remembering the armed forces who are engaged in operations around the world to keep us safe from the threat of international terrorism.” He spoke of the fire power of the British Army, Naval and Air Force that will be showcased by the displays on Saturday and thanked the borough for hosting the event. He continued: “The armed forces are hugely grateful. We join so that we can give something back to the nation and we all enjoy the support that local communities give us.” At Immingham, Royal Navy officials led the final flag-raising ceremony of the day and town Mayor Stewart Swinburn was also on hand to welcome the national occasion to the town. He says that he is “privileged” to host such a ceremony. He said: “It’s a great time for us to recognise the troops that have given their lives and we are very proud to be able to honour these people. “The flag will act as a symbol of those who have given their lives. It’s our tribute from the whole of the borough and it’s great recognition for the residents who I’m sure are just as
With just a matter of days to go until the eyes of the nation are fixed on Cleethorpes for the National Armed Forces Day celebrations this weekend, local dignitaries gathered with military officials to welcome the event to the borough. Three flag-raising ceremonies were held on Monday, involving land, air and sea. One ceremony was held in each of the three North East Lincolnshire towns, Cleethorpes, Grimsby and Immingham. Spectators braved the harsh summer showers to see the flags transported to their destinations by Royal Air Force Puma Helicopter, which delivered the flags to Cleethorpes at 10am. The first flag was raised by the RAF at the Armed Forces Memorial Gate, near Sea View Street, Cleethorpes, where a Typhoon bomber performed a flypast to mark the start of the Armed Forces celebrations. In a speech, the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire Christina McGilligan-Fell, said that she was delighted to welcome what will be a celebration of the country’s armed forces. She said: “We are proud to present the event and honoured to welcome serving and past members of the armed forces to North East Lincolnshire. “We have a strong military heritage and we are delighted to bring together people of all ages to thank servicemen and women for their bravery, dedication and sacrifice.” The wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of Armed Forces Champion and former

He said: “We have now pressed the green button and we are finally off and running. It will be brilliant at the weekend. “I would like to encourage all members of the public to come down to say thanks to the armed forces for the defence of our nation. Everyone has pulled together to make this happen and it’s time to show our
pride.” Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers added: “This is a tremendous opportunity for Cleethorpes for what will be a grand show for our brave armed forces. “We have got a long and proud history and the locals recognise the contribution made in conflict. The Prime Minister and other dignitaries will be here so it’s a great chance to showcase Cleethorpes.” From there, the two further

The event looks set to be one of the biggest ever to have been held in the area. TransPennine Express said it was delighted to welcome visitors to Cleethorpes Railway Station and has issued some important advice for those attending to the event by rail. They advise that customers should allow extra time to travel and that there will be a queuing system in place at the station. Extra carriages will be put on, where possible, but they have a limited number of trains available. With this in mind, extra buses are being provided to ensure people can travel home from the event. Customers are also reminded to check before they travel, especially when it comes to planning their journey home. Kathryn O‘Brien, customer experience director at TransPennine Express, said: “We are delighted that Cleethorpes is hosting this year’s National Armed Forces Day and along with our rail industry partners, we will be doing all we can to carry customers to and from this special event. “Train services will be very busy throughout the weekend and we have put on extra carriages and replacement coaches, where possible.
Cleethorpes Station and we hope they enjoy the weekend’s activities.” Rob McIntosh, route managing director at Network Rail, said: “It is an honour for Cleethorpes to be chosen to host this special event and the rail industry is delighted to be playing our part. “We have worked together to extend trains and run additional services to Cleethorpes. “Even with the extra seats available we expect trains to be really busy so we are asking passengers to please plan ahead, to leave extra time for your journey and to have a plan B in case your preferred train is full.” East Midlands Trains services from Lincoln are being extended to run to and from Cleethorpes on Saturday and services will run with extra carriages on Sunday. Northern and TransPennine Express (TPE) are both arranging for longer trains to run on their usual routes. Inspector Graham Bridges, from British Transport Police, added: “Trains are expected to be exceptionally busy, so give yourself plenty of time to travel and please be patient. “We will have extra officers out at the station and on trains providing support and advice to passengers during the event.”

Fly guy Matt is loving high life THE pilots of the world famous Red Arrows have promised Cleethorpes will “come to a standstill” when they perform their stunning display at National Armed Forces Day.
The Red Arrows will perform a flypast and display in Cleethorpes and will also fly out to Immingham. An expected crowd of 100,000 will see the display team around noon on Saturday, when they will be buzzing over the resort to wow the crowds with a full 20-minute display. The chance to see the world-famous Red Arrows over the Humber estuary is probably one of the most dramatic and jaw-dropping places in which to see their graceful twists and turns. Flight lieutenant Matt Masters, one of nine Red Arrows pilots, promised the crowds will be wowed with a fantastic display. Speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph after a showcase event at RAF Scampton, the Southampton-born pilot, who operates in Red 2, said the event means “a lot more” to the pilots than their normal displays. “This event is always the highlight of our year as it means the most to us,” he said. “We fly all over the country and we represent the country abroad, too. Yet when we come home to fly in front of so many people in Lincolnshire, that means a lot more to us.” Now taking on their 52nd display season, the Red Arrows will return to the skies over Cleethorpes for the first time since the 2014 Cleethorpes air show. The resort will become the national focal point for the annual celebration of servicemen and women both past and present. Thousands are expected to turn out to enjoy an impressive line-up of displays and entertainment on what promises to be a day that will live long in the memory. Alongside the Red Arrows, the weekend will see spectacular displays from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Parachute Display teams and the Royal Navy Black Cats helicopter display flight. Spitfire and Hurricane aircrafts are will to the skies as part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Ground crew at RAF Coningsby are currently working around the clock in an effort to get the Lancaster Bomber fit for the display after the aircraft received essential maintenance works. Flt Lt Masters added: “The National Armed Forces event is always a big day and this year we are expecting around 100,000 people. “Our display is very much down to what weather we get. If it’s not too cloudy then we will be able to do a full display, which I’m sure the crowds will love. “Either way it will be a dynamic show and the crowd will be in for a treat. “We want to keep it quite close to the crowd and make sure that there is always one jet that is visible.” Flt Lt Masters, who joined the Royal Air Force in 1998, said becoming a Red Arrows pilot was a long-held ambition. “I’ve been flying different jets for around 22 years now and I’m nearing the end of my career,” he added. “It’s a dream to be flying with the Red Arrows, it’s what I’ve always wanted to do so I’m very proud. “It’s a very rewarding job.

STARRING ROLLS: Red Arrows pilot Matt Masters. Picture: Jon Corken “I think as soon as people see the plane in the skies they know exactly what it is, and that’s what sets us apart from other planes.” Each year, two or three experienced Royal Air Force pilots join the team, succeeding the same number leaving the Squadron. To be considered for selection, a pilot must be rated as the very best in terms of flying ability, have previously flown operationally and have 1,500 fast jet
hours. One of those new additions is Si Taylor, flight lieutenant on Red 3. He said the pilots enjoy taking on seafront shows as they pose a “different challenge”. The 35-year-old, who was born and brought up in Leeds, said: “I’m really looking forward to the event, it will be brilliant. “To be able to do this in Lincolnshire is even more brilliant. What is a 45
minute drive will take us just five minutes. “We like to do seafront shows as they always attract big crowds. They also provide us with a different challenge as we might have to change things round depending on the weather conditions. It can be quite challenging. “A lot does depend on the weather, but fingers crossed we have some sunny and clear days like we’ve had recently.”

He joined the Royal Air Force in 2003 and has deployed on numerous occasions, flying both the Tornado and Typhoon aircraft. “The Red Arrows hold a lot of history here in the UK and it’s great to show take abroad,” Flt Lt Taylor added. “They’ve been flying for 52 years and people know if the Red Arrows are flying, they’re going to see a good display. “We are very professional and dedicated and we love representing the UK all over the world.” The day will also mean a great deal to 31-year-old Rob Dixon, who works at RAF Scampton as a MT driver. Originally born in Wybers Wood in Grimsby, Rob has since moved to Caistor having been based at Scampton for just seven weeks. He is responsible for filling the planes with dye, which produces the smoke that can be seen coming out of the back of the jets, as well as re-fuelling after every display. He said: “Even though I’m going to be based here on the day, I’m still very much looking forward to the Armed Forces event. “It’s great to have the event on our doorstep and it will mean so much more to the pilots. “The Red Arrows have such great history in Lincolnshire and it’s great that lots of people will get to see them.” Asked why the Red Arrows are treasured so much by the British public, he added: “They’re just pretty cool, aren’t they?”
Setting out stalls to suit every taste THE National Armed Forces Day event in Cleethorpes is fast approaching but, with so much to see and do, where are the best places to go to see everything you want to take in?
BUILD-UP: St James School pupils pose with officials at the flag-raising ceremony at the Remembrance Gate in Cleethorpes, which was held in March to mark 100 days until Armed Forces Day.
The show gets underway at noon on Friday,, with the fun kicking off at 10am on both Saturday, and Sunday. The majority of stands and the Boating Lake area will stay open until 6pm each day, though hours will be extended in the open areas if traders wish to remain open. Food and traders Each day, traders, food stalls and entertainment will be dotted about the resort. Sea View Street will host some of the small traders selling unique and bespoke gifts as well as a local bar in the car park at the top. North Prom will also be a hive of activity. Lower Kingsway will also be filled with stands, as will the area around the Boating Lake. Enter tainment Throughout the weekend, at the Cambridge Street end of Sea View Street, water walkers and a bungee trampoline will be on offer for children. Meanwhile, Pier Gardens will be
filled with local military-focused charities, Grimsby Institute’s obstacle course and, if you’re after some thrills, an exhilarating zip wire. ● Lower Kingsway will be home to a number of exciting simulators and you can even have your photo taken next to a giant deck chair! ● Military displays and exhibits from national military charities will be held in the Boating Lake area. In the car park areas of the Boating Lake, you’ll be able to visit some unique visitors to Cleethorpes in the military villages – the Navy, Army and Air Force will all be providing some fantastic static displays for you to see. ● Between 6pm and 9.45pm on Friday, military and local bands will entertain you along Alexandra Road and outside the Armed Forces Gate, culminating in a massed band perfor mance. ● On Saturday, there will also be entertainment from the Military Wives Choir from RAF Cranwell, our local All for One Choir, the RAF police sniffer dog display team and the White Helmets motorcycle team.
