Bronze statue is a rarity for auction

T

HE common perception is that the Victorians were straight-laced, prudish and apt to be shocked by an exposed ankle let alone anything as outrageous as nudity.

However, as the work of art currently gracing the exchange saleroom rather startlingly demonstrates not every Victorian fitted the stereotype. The fabulous bronze was made in France (naturally), but works of this kind sold very well in this country to an affluent clientele living in country houses and stately homes. Middle class views and attitudes did not carry any weight with them. Apart from the nudity, the most immediately striking thing about the work is the size. It stands almost three feet high (85 cms), so we’re talking about something that is in a completely different league to the much smaller art deco period pieces produced by Chiparus, Preiss and Lorenzl that appear in the saleroom on a regular basis. This is a piece intended to be a work of art, rather than a decorative furnishing item. The subject is Esmerelda, a young gypsy girl who features in Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and her pet goat called Djali. The sculptor depicts the girl naked, apart from a shawl to protect a little of her modesty, perched on a rock, holding the lead attached to the grazing animal. The artist’s name is not inscribed on the piece but we believe it to be Louis Kley (1833-1911), a famous French sculptor who was a regular exhibitor in the annual Paris Salon where his work was much admired for its beauty and craftsmanship. The name we do have inscribed on the piece is F Barbedienne: Ferdinand Barbedienne, one of the leading Paris bronze foundries in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm started in 1838 when Ferdinand Barbedienne, a successful wallpaper manufacturer, went into partnership with Achille Collas – who had invented a mechanical process to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. In the early years of the venture, they concentrated on producing miniature versions of the classical and antique sculptures to be found in museums all over Europe, but in the mid-1840s there was a major diversification that saw the foundry begin producing bronze copies of the work of living artists. The very first contract was with Francois Rude (1784-1855) and a huge array of star sculptors would follow, including Antoine Louis Barye and Auguste Rodin. Just how well regarded Barbedienne became

can be judged is the fact that its products were chosen to furnish the Hotel de Ville in Paris in 1850-54. The firm also achieved great success at international exhibitions, including three medals in different classes at the London Exhibition of 1862. Six years before his death in 1892 Ferdinand Barbedienne was awarded the Jean Goujon Gold Medal by the Societe d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie Nationale, as prestigious an honour as a Parisian manufacturer and businessman could receive. After Barbedienne’s death his nephew Gustave Leblanc took the company through until 1952.

So what do we make of Esmerelda with Djali? I think it is not only a beautifully produced piece but also, because of its size, quite a rarity. You do not see many bronzes this big coming on to the market because they were country house pieces and they tend to stay in those houses forever. This example has spent most of its life in a large country house in the region. During our research we have discovered one or two examples of this sculpture being offered for sale at auction but all of them were much smaller, half the size or less. Its size also takes it over the boundary between “furnishing piece” and “work of art”. This is not

something that anyone would buy on a whim to stick on the sideboard. That makes quite a difference in terms of the market: It is not as susceptible to changing decorating fashions and it is a serious proposition to buyers looking at it as an investment All that being the case, the bronze is expected to attract international interest when it goes under the hammer in an Antiques & Fine Art Auction in Driffield on Friday, September 12. The pre-sale estimate is £2,000 to £3,000, but I would not be at all surprised if it did rather better than that. A super, classy, thing to have in the auction.
