Season’s greetings from City Mayor, Peter Soulsby
I
CITY SET TO SPARKLE
t may be cold outside, but we’re gearing up to give residents and visitors to the city a warm reception in Leicester this Christmas.
This year, we’ll be switching on Leicester’s traditional Christmas lights on a weekday evening. After the spectacle of the streets being illuminated with festive decorations, people will be able to enjoy a spot of Christmas shopping in the city’s fantastic independent and high street stores. Once shopping bags are full, visitors may choose to recharge with refreshments from one of Leicester’s wide range of restaurants and cafes. The festivities will begin at 5pm on Thursday 17 November, with a packed programme of entertainment on the Humberstone Gate stage, with the main event - the switch-on of the Christmas lights - at 6.30pm. The switch-on itself will mark the start of a weekend of fabulous festive-themed activities and family entertainment. A Christmas funfair will be on Humberstone Gate from Saturday 19 November and
www.visitleicester.info
the city’s popular Winter Food and Drink Festival will return to Leicester Market on Sunday 20 November, with the chance to sample delicious local food and drink from over 150 stalls.
A highlight of last year’s celebrations, Leicester’s spectacular Wheel of Light – a 110-foot ferris wheel - will be back at Jubilee Square for the Christmas period. People will be able to sit back and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the bustling city centre. This guide is packed full of details of these and many more Christmas activities you can enjoy in Leicester during the festive season, from theatre shows to Christmas craft events, to nights out for night owls. There really is something for everyone. Our wonderful, historic city provides a fabulous backdrop to the season’s festivities. Wishing you all a very merry Christmas, and a happy, peaceful 2017. If you’re not sure what to get for a gift, you could always get one of the traders to arrange a lovely fruit basket for you. you’re after, the market has those too along with a selection of nuts, chocolates and sweets for seasonal treats. Leicester Market has undergone a multi-million pound development in the past few years with the new food hall as the first step in a series of improvements. Now work is underway to create a large, open public square on the site of Leicester’s demolished indoor market hall where a variety of events could take place such as specialty markets, screenings for films or sporting events as well as concerts and festivals. POINTING YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
ÂŁ
950,000 is being invested by Leicester City Council to help people find their way around more easily through the Legible Leicester project. The aim of the project is to get rid of old and confusing signs and replace them with new clearer markers, reversing years of accumulated street clutter and helping people navigate the city centre. Early next year new signs, made of durable stainless steel and toughened glass will be put up. The signs will be installed around the city centre in 70 locations, highlighting key landmarks, visitor attractions and other places of interest, as well as directions from main transport hubs and local car parks. Among them are maps designed to be easily readable. These will be incorporated into the signs and will indicate the walking time between places of interest. Leicester has really put itself on the map in recent years and as a result latest figures show that more than 10 million tourists chose to spend time in our city last year, with those visitors contributing more than ÂŁ570 million to the local economy in 2015. The new signage will really help all visitors and residents to find their way around the city, find key attractions and explore places of interest. A second phase of Legible Leicester is also planned to rationalise traffic signs beyond the city centre, mainly on the inner ring road.
A Legible Leicester sign will be located by the Clock Tower in the city centre

After a whirlwind summer romance, leather-clad greaser Danny and girl-nextdoor Sandy are unexpectedly reunited when she transfers to Rydell High for senior year. But can they survive the trials and tribulations of teenage life, and find true love once more? A favourite on Broadway, the West End and the silver screen, Grease topped Channel 4’s poll to find the 100 Greatest Musicals of all time. Box Office: 0116 242 3595 www.curveonline.co.uk

But not for much longer because the monkeys have a cunning plan to teach those terrible twits a lesson. Directed by Max Webster (The Lorax at The Old Vic), Curve’s mischievous new co-production with Rose Theatre Kingston promises to be just as disgusting and repulsive as earth worms disguised as spaghetti – the perfect Christmas treat for all the family. LIVE IT UP ON LONDON ROAD
T
here’s a definite buzz about London Road. As one of the gateways into the city it’s a reflection of what more there is to offer and it doesn’t disappoint.
then The Lansdowne has this sewn up. The gastro pub food is also fine fair. Just a few doors down is the Marquis Wellington. Another great watering hole to share a drink with some friends or work colleagues.
Renowned for its curry restaurants, in recent months, it has opened its doors to cuisine from far and wide.
London Road isn’t just about food however, any men out there looking to impress should pay Christopher Scotney a visit and pick up a designer suit. Having traded from the road since the early 70s, this store knows everything there is to know about tailoring and finding just the right look for the right occasion, whether it’s black tie or smart casual.
Konak is among these - a large yet cosy restaurant selling authentic Turkish cuisine, from kebabs and stuffed vine leaves to hot meze and calamari. It’s a popular formula and customers are flocking back. More restaurant is well established and thanks to its world buffet dining experience has something for everyone. The quality is top notch and it welcomes large parties during the festive season. Of course we couldn’t not mention a few curry houses, there’s Chettinad Restaurant and The Curry House, to name a few - all offering their own unique take on popular Asian dishes along with some fantastic chef’s specialities. If it’s spice you’re after this Christmas then there’s no need to go anywhere else. Heavenly Desserts restaurant has a fine selection of ice creams and treats to try - so many it’s hard to make a choice - so why not try them all? terrace for small-plate banquets and Arabic mains is an absolute delight on Church Gate and well worth a visit, while Brucciani’s Cafe is another highlight along here. With its Italian origins, the coffee is nothing less than bellissimo! In 1937 Luigi Brucciani came to Leicester, where the booming hosiery and shoe trades provided an excellent place to establish a coffee shop. Over the years the business has grown to offer a whole selection of beautifully prepared drinks sandwiches, snacks, cakes and lunchtime treats in a relaxing atmosphere.
Langtons furniture store has been a firm fixture of the street for over 70 years. Its high quality furniture along with friendly staff see customers going back time and time again. It also stocks upholstery and furnishings so if you’re looking to revamp the home this New Year, don’t forget to pay Langtons a visit.
Just around the corner, you will find East Bond Street where there is plenty to offer a discerning shopper.
Department store, Matalan is also a great place to pick up some essential items without breaking the bank.
Anyone wanting to look their very best this Christmas can also head to Hair & Booty where stylists specialise in European and Asian textured and Afro hair, Balayage and free hand colouring techniques, barbering and beard grooming.

WELCOME TO THE WEST END
L
eicester’s West End, in particular Narborough Road, has earned itself the title of the most multi-cultural street in the country.
Based on research provided by academics from the London School of Economics, the road is officially the most diverse street in England, boasting at least 23 different nationalities among the 222 shops along its one-mile length. So famous has it become that Channel Four filmed several of its shop keepers and residents earlier this year as a means of reflecting its own diverse credentials. The street is most definitely on the map! Another area of the West End - renowned for a great night out -is Braunstone Gate. A lively place to be with an equally broad range of bars. If you’re in the party mood then head here. There is an ambience and atmosphere for everyone, from the Black Horse – a real ale haven – to Mobius, a late night magnet for post pub drinkers, with 2-4-1 cocktails and the best of 70s, 80s and 90s club classics. The Black Horse, however, is on the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) circuit – no opulent cocktails here – instead offering an ever-changing cast of guest
ales alongside its regular Everards fare. There’s regular music too, including open-mic folk sessions and, occasionally, live modern jazz. The Laundry Bar is an urban local serving cocktails, shooters, world beers and ales, wines and hot drinks, while Natterjacks is a buzzy bar and eatery with burgers and other pub classics. There are also dozens of restaurants - Mobius among them offers a modern Greek menu in a cosy dining area. As if all this wasn’t enough, visitors to Braunstone Gate can also try Bowstrings for cocktails and a nightclub experience. In 2009, the historic Bowstring Bridge, and a nearby pub called the Pump and Tap, were demolished to make way for De Montfort University’s new sports centre. The £8 million Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre opened in July 2012, and offers a swimming pool, climbing wall, gym and sauna – a great place to go to start the New Year with a health kick.

Curve Theatre in Leicester is one of the city’s top destinations for a night of entertainment
NIGHTLIFE IN THE CITY
L
eicester’s nightlife, like the city itself is buzzing. A year of highs from the Foxes Premier League win to Kasabian’s gig at the King Power Stadium, not to mention the draw of King Richard III, have not only put it on the map, but into the global stratosphere. Leicester itself is unrecognisable from the days of old thanks to the considerable investment by Leicester City Council in the creation of public spaces and better connected streets and places.
Brit Award winner KT Tunstall is among those playing there this festive season, along with Michael Ball, Jools Holland, and Katie Melua - a stellar lineup that won’t disappoint. On January 6, Leicester Comedy Festival Preview show will provide a New Year shindig to remember as some of comedy’s up and coming names take to the stage in a bid to impress.
There’s so much that Leicester has to offer, from eating out to music, and theatre, dancing or a spot of comedy.
The festival itself started in 1994 with 40 events programmed into 23 venues over seven days throughout Leicestershire. In 1994 it attracted an audience of 5,000 and enjoyed a modest amount of media attention and a high profile within the community.
De Montfort Hall is the largest entertainment venue in the city thanks to its 2,200 capacity. With four bars and an outdoor amphitheatre, it really does have it all a traditional setting with all the mod cons.
Since then it has featured top stand-up names from Roseanne Barr, Jo Brand, and Paul Merton, to Jack Dee, Dave Gorman, Tony Slattery, Rory Bremner, Ross Noble, and Jimmy Carr - enough said!

The relaxed and informal atmosphere of The Cosy Club in Highcross Street
Embrace performing at Leicester's O2 Academy
Not content with having one fantastic theatre, Leicester also has the Curve in the city’s Cultural Quarter - an uber modern building that exudes style. From The Woman in Black and Grease the musical to Singalong Dirty Dancing and Roald Dahl’s The Twits there is something for everyone this Christmas. If it’s something a little cosier you’re after then The Y Theatre, at Leicester’s YMCA or The Little Theatre, whose patron and honorary president was the late great, Lord Richard Attenborough, are a must to visit.
Micro Jupiter play at The Soundhouse
For music there are venues where you can catch big names and those smaller names showcasing breakthrough talent. The Musician in Clyde Street is one such place. Close by to The Musician is The Soundhouse in Southampton Street, another little hot bed of music and a bastion of the local music scene where many bands go to cut their teeth. The Cookie, in Leicester’s High Street, is also a great place to head to for good music -a bustling coffee house by day, it transforms into an arty bar by night with live music and comedy in the cellar.

The Terrace
The Shed in Leicester may look shabby chic, but that’s the way it’s supposed to be. It’s a live music institution, tucked away in Yeoman Street and a place where up and coming bands can make a name for themselves. Frequent one of the city’s many pubs and you’ll also be able to listen to live acts on particular nights of the week. The O2 Academy, based on The University of Leicester’s campus, is a great place to go for a gig.
Green Street is a firm favourite and draws a mixed crowd, from the younger student types to those old enough to remember Shed Seven the first time around. Drinks come served in pineapples and sea shells - oh yes I hear you say. The Exchange in the Cultural Quarter is for the arty types at the weekend, while Apres Ski in the High Street has a cool vibe and resident DJs. The Terrace Champagne and Cocktail Bar in Albion Street is also jumping.
Shed Seven and Reef will both be playing there shortly, proving the old ones sometimes are the best.
Firebug in Millstone Lane is an essential part of Leicester’s nightlife. Its extensive drinks menu and home cooked food keeps customers going back for more, along with its legendary music scene.
If you fancy putting on your dancing shoes then there’s some great places to choose from. Rock fans can’t go wrong with Mosh in St Nicholas Place, while those looking for an indie, retro or a bit of a soul vibe should head to Fan Club in Abbey Street.
Over the last few years there have been live performances from many notable acts including Foals, Dutch Uncles, Johnny Foreigner, Frank Turner, Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad.
The Donkey in Welford Road is renowned for its musical reputation. Past alumni include John Power, The Fun Lovin Criminals, and Miles Hunt. There are bars aplenty too, Hakamou in Bowling www.visitleicester.info
