BINDINGS
CRAMP O MATIC A well known system which relies on a nylon speed lever at the rear and a stainless steel front bale to hold the booth.
NEW MATIC The plastic harness system is hinged from two front posts which retain the boot securely even if it has a shallow, worn front welt or overboots are beign used.
NEW CLASSIC Both front and rear plastc harnesses are hinged from their respective retention posts and may be “opened to facilitate attachment to the boot, then closed securely once the boot is inside.
SKI MATIC 2.0 The front binding fits modern plastic ski touring boots and it is not guaranteed for traditional mountain boots. 10 - 11

CROSS LOADING P RO BL E M
P ROBLEM
PRO BL EM
SOLUTION

SOLUTIO N
Cross-loading happens when a carabiner is stressed on its minor axis. Carabiners are strongest when stressed on their major axis meaning directly in line, vertically, along the spine. When a carabiner is stressed on its minor axis it’s generally one third as strong. The second problem happens when the carabiner “turns” on your rack and you have to unhook it as fast as possible. The third problem happens when you want to clip the carabiner and in the meantime it has turned in the quick draw.

The POSEIDON is a special harness for mountaineering, expeditions and ice falls. It is the first waterproof harness! The Dry technology used in the ropes is now used also on the Poseidon harness. Grivel has developed the GS, composed of a semi hard half-shell to better distribute the forces, coupled inside with a special honeycomb material able to absorb most of the energy without transferring it on the spine, finally protected by recurring damages. The back of the climbers thanks! Available as spare piece that fits all the new or used harnesses. • Absorbs most of the energy of a fall protecting the spine • Protects from shocks against hard surfaces • Adds comfort
GS - GRIVEL SHIELD 26 - 27
PROTECT YOUR SPINE To be easily tolerated by the climber a climbing fall requires two factors: the resistance of all the elements of the safety chain (rope, carabiners, protection etc) and their ability to absorb part of the energy released in the fall. The harness is practically static and transmits all the remaining energy on the thighs (that absorb it well), around the waist (that absorbs well enough) and on the spine where all the microtrauma add up creating permanent effects. For this Grivel has developed the GS composed of a half-shell semi hard to better distribute the forces, coupled inside with a special honeycomb material able to absorb most of the energy without transferring it on the spine. The back of the climbers thanks!

NICK HOLLON -
Expert Advice: Running Italy’s Tor des Geants
Nickademus Hollon placed 2nd at this year’s Tor des Geants in 76hrs and 29min’s and was the first ever non-European to make it the podium in the race’s five year history. Below he offers some of his most valuable tips in terms of training, racing and recovery from the 330km journey. 1. Know what you are getting into. TDG is hailed as the world’s most difficult mountain ultramarathon for good reason. Training for the race is a six month commitment minimum and any athletes even considering the event should have a very strong mountain running background. 2. Keep training relevant. Although high volume and elevation gain are extremely important aspects of training, you should strive to mimic the terrain you’ll encounter at TDG. Nothing will prepare you better for the race than familiarizing yourself with unrelenting technical climbs and descents similar to what you’ll come across at the race. 3. Get to know the course. Whether that means getting out to race course in August and hiking the entire route or spending countless hours studying the maps and topography of the region. Learn and memorize the ups, downs, technical and non-technical portions of the course. 4. Practice using hiking poles. Use and get comfortable with hiking poles in the months leading up to TDG. Poles make your uphill hiking economy far more efficient and can save your hips, knees and muscles from severe trauma if used properly on downhills. 5. Practice napping. During a 330km race you will encounter extreme sleep deprivation. Studying sleep cycles and analyzing your own sleep patterns can help immensely. Make a nap journal leading up to TDG. Does a 15 or 45 minutes work best for you? Know how much sleep your body needs to stay functional. 6. Smile and be thankful. Thank the race volunteers at the tops of the high mountain passes. Thank the medical staff at the life bases. Thank the volunteers and fans lining the course. It’s a beautiful course, full of beautiful people-smile and enjoy it. 7. Run your own race. Nothing is more important than running your own race. Don’t worry about what others are doing, who is passing you or what position you are in. Race your own race, track your own progress and define your own limitations.

8. Don’t use bad words. I mean it. Not a single negative word. What you say becomes what you think and what you think becomes your reality. Keep your vocabulary positive and the lows of your race will be short lived. 9. Honor your body. Your body will be wrecked after running TDG. Take care of it. Drink lots of liquids. Take anti-inflammatories. Avoid alcohol and salt. Respect and thank your body by eating well, resting and staying hydrated. 10. Beware of post-race depression. TDG is a tremendous life accomplishment. And slipping back into normal life can be tough. Surround yourself with friends and family and remember that there is more to life than just running! Use this time to discover an old passion you may have cast aside in the months leading up to the race. 34

GRIVEL is happy and proud to help the planet through the use of SOLAR ENERGY
MADE WITH SOLAR ENERGY
The roof of the factory is around 7000 square meters, and the solar panels cover a surface equivalent to a football field. Our solar panels generate around 516 Kwp. They produce the energy consumption of 194 families. They save the planet’s air of 806 Kg of CO2, equivalent of a car travelling 5800 km. During their 25 year lifecycle, they will produce around 12 000 000 KWh, which would cover the needs of one family for 4200 years. Every year we save 1173 barrels of oil.

TOWARDS 200 YEARS
1818
IN THE GRIVEL FAMILY OF BLACKSMITHS STARTED TO TRANSFORM THEIR PRODUCTION OF AGRICULTURAL TOOLS TO SATISFY THE RATHER PECULIAR DEMANDS OF A NEW BREED OF WEALTHY TOURISTS WHO, FOR UNFATHOMABLE REASONS, WANTED TO CLIMB THE MOUNTAINS!
1936
IN , IN COLLABORATION FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH THE COGNE STEELWORKS, AMATO GRIVEL, LAURENT’S YOUNGER BROTHER, USING THE CHROMOLLY ALLOY (NICKEL-CHROME-MOLYBDENUM), CREATED A REALLY STRONG GRIVEL CRAMPON, THINNER AND THEREFORE LIGHTER.
THE ENGLISH ENGINEER OSCAR ECKENSTEIN WAS RECEIVED WITH SIMILAR SKEPTICISM WHEN IN HE ASKED HENRY GRIVEL TO MANUFACTURE THE FIRST MODERN GRIVEL CRAMPONS.
1909
1982
IN A NEW MANAGEMENT LED BY GIOACHINO GOBBI WAS CONVINCED THAT OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OF TRADITION, THE BRAND NAME AND THE COMPANY’S LOCATION WERE A RECIPE FOR FUTURE SUCCESS.

1929
IN , HENRY’S SON LAURENT MADE THE BRILLIANT INVENTION OF THE TWO FRONT POINTS, ALLOWING CLIMBERS TO STAND FACE ON WHILST ATTACKING THE STEEP ICE AND SNOW GRADIENTS. THIS INNOVATION WAS THE KEY TO THE CONQUEST OF THE LAST UNSOLVED ROUTE OF THE ALPS: THE NORTH OF THE EIGER, 21-24TH JULY, 1938.
1996
THE MACHINE: THE GRIVEL ICE AXE THAT REVOLUTIONIZED THE DESIGN OF TECHNICAL TOOLS. FROM NOW ON THIS WAS THE SHAPE THAT ALL MANUFACTURERS WOULD USE.
2003
IN GRIVEL CRAMPONS RESOLVE THE PROBLEM OF SNOW BUILD UP UNDER CRAMPONS WITH THE FIRST PROACTIVE ANTI-BALLING PLATE.
IN MAY THE COMPANY OPENED A NEW PRODUCTION UNIT IN A MUCH BIGGER SPACE, ALLOWING TO MANAGE DIFFERENT LINES OF PRODUCTION, TO AUGMENT FLEXIBILITY RESPONDING TO DAILY NEW DEMANDS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, AND WIDEN THE RANGE OF PRODUCTS AND MAINTAIN AN AVANT-GARDE POSITION IN THE MARKETPLACE. SINCE 2010 THE NEW LOCATION HAS ALLOWED US TO SWITCH TO A TOTAL SOLAR ENERGY FUELED PRODUCTION, CLEANER AND MORE ECOFRIENDLY. EVERY YEAR THEY SAVE 1,173 BARRELS OF OIL!
We make products that our customers have to rely on, with quality and safety as ultimate goals, based on our experience and optimizing our “Made in Italy”.
Innovation drives us forward but our roots are in Grivel’s long history, dating back to the foundation of the company in 1818.
Based at the foot of Mont Blanc it is essential for us to respect the enviroment. This comes through the use of renewable Energy for production, and a constant search for enviromental-friendly technologies and recycled materials.
