TOWARDS 200 YEARS In 1818 the Grivel family of blacksmiths started to transform their production of agricultural tools to satisfy the rather peculiar demands of a new breed of wealthy tourists who, for unfathomable reasons, wanted to climb the mountains! So the Grivel ice axe came into being surrounded by skepticism. The English engineer Oscar Eckenstein was received with similar skepticism when in 1909 he asked Henry Grivel to manufacture the first modern Grivel crampons. In 1929, Henry’s son Laurent made the brilliant invention of the two front points, allowing climbers to stand face on whilst attacking the steep ice and snow gradients. This innovation was the key to the conquest of the last unsolved route of the Alps: the North of the Eiger, 21-24th July, 1938.
In 1936, in collaboration for the first time with the Cogne steelworks, Amato Grivel, Laurent’s younger brother, using the Chromolly alloy (Nickel-Chrome-Molybdenum), created a really strong Grivel crampon, thinner and therefore lighter. They forged Grivel crampons weighing 360 grams a pair, up until then impossible. These Grivel crampons, the Super Leggero Grivel, have been used to conquer the 3 highest peaks in the world, the Everest, the K2, and the Kangchenjunga.
In 1982 new blood took over a rather sleepy, uncompetitive Grivel that had allowed itself to be overtaken by rival companies. New management led by Gioachino Gobbi was convinced that over a hun-

future success. 1996 = The Machine: the Grivel ice axe that revolutionized the design of technical tools. From now on this was the shape that all manufacturers would use.
In 2003 Grivel crampons resolve the problem of snow build up under crampons with the first proactive anti-balling plate.
The Machine 3.0 the future!
Today 196 years later, Grivel, still basically one large family, continues in its balancing act between tradition and progress, between forging and aerospace technology, between intuition and R&D.
First ice axe on K2 - July 31st 1954 Grivel Mont-Blanc has achieved all possible certifications: from TUV GS (Sichereit Gepruft) for product quality to ISO 9001-Vision 2000 for our management system and even the ISO 14001 environmental Certification for Environmental Compatibility.
In May 2009 the company opened a new production unit in a much bigger space where it is easier to manage the different lines of production. This will help our flexibility in the face of the new demands that come in daily from around the

world. This new set up means that we can widen our range of products and maintain our avant-garde position in the marketplace.
The new location has allowed us to change to solar energy making our production cleaner and more eco-friendly. Since 2010 all the energy needs are produced by our photovoltaic panels. Every year they 1,173 barrels of oil!

INNOVATION TIMELINE 1929
1909
Henry’s son Laurent came up with the brilliant invention of the two front points, allowing climbers to stand face on whilst attacking the steep ice and snow gradients.
The English engineer Oscar Eckenstein was received with similar scepticism when he asked Henry Grivel to manufacture the first modern crampon in history.

CONNECTORS Otto “RaMBO” Herzog Otto Herzog, 1888-1964, was a German climber and inventor. He got his nickname 70 years before Silvester Stallone ‘s movie. In 1910 he had seen a fire brigade whose men wore pear-sharped karabiners (or karabinerhaken: hook for carabine) on their belts, and quickly adopted the gear on a few practice routes. In 1921, Herzog, together with Gustav Haber, climbed the “Ha-He Verschneidung” on the Dreizinkenspitze (2306m), today rated 5.10. Herzog and Haber’s climb was so difficult that grade VI had to be added onto the I-V grading scale.

Carabiners clip and unclip by accident, unclipping can cause injury, death, and huge inconvenience, check it out, accidental unclipping seriously compromises longevity! Carabiners most commonly unclip on metal to metal connections. Carabiner to carabiner, or carabiner to peg or bolt. Carabiners are prone to ‘gate flutter,’ a dangerous condition created by irregular impact forces generated by the climbing rope or contact with hard surfaces in a fall which momentarily opens the gate (and both lowers the breaking strength of the carabiner when open and potentially allows the rope to escape). In sport climbing, the Z clip or back clip, can unclip you! Badly twisted ropes perform magic tricks in unclipping, beware! Sitting on belay equipment, or pressing with your body like chimneys and cracks will unclip gear, or belays.
To avoid accidental unclipping, locking carabiners have an additional mechanism securing the gate: 1982
1970
Before “Rambo” first conceived using carabiners, climbers had only two options for connecting their ropes to protection: tie the rope and protection together, or untie and run the rope directly through the gear. Neither option was quick or especially safe. The first carabiners where pearsharped then the oval shape made easier the handling. Alluminium carabiners hit the market at the end of WWII. Pierre Allain, a French climber and engineer , had developed the first aluminium-alloy biner in 1939.
_ 14
1994
In the ‘40s Riccardo Cassin and Felice Bonaiti, studying the strength of biners, invented the asymmetrical crab that we call “D shape”. In the ‘80s the bent gate for easier clipping was introduced and rapidly accepted. In the ‘90s the wire gate carabiner, very common in the maritime industry, starts to be adopted by climbers.
Now the safety revolution, the TWIN GATE.
1. Screw- lock requires more effort and is more time consuming. 2. Twist-lock is difficult to engage one-handed and with gloves on. 3. Side locking as numerous small pieces which must be pushed or pinched simultaneously to disengage.
Now the safety revolution:
the Twin Gate
BECAUSE TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE Twin Gate is safe, safer, safest! Overall Twin Gate wins on safety! Twin Gate VS Ordinary carabiner
Twin Gate VS Screw gate carabiner
The Twin Gate is the safest carabiner ever made, it is a safety revolution. Due to its innovative design, it works as both an ordianary carabiner and as a screwgate carabiner, but it does its job quicker and safer. The Twin Gate is twice the carabiner and it is strong.
Twin Gate wins in safety and speed. Screw gates need extra time to screw and climbers sometime forget. Let us say 5 secs slower. Screw gates get stuck opened, or in the closed position, due to grit, sand or freezing conditions.
Carabiners clip and unclip by accident, unclipping can cause injury, death, and huge inconvenience, the only carabineer that successfully cures this, is the Twin Gate. Check it out, accidental unclipping seriously compromises longevity!
Twin Gate, two gates, twice the carabiner. Where it matters choose the Twin Gate: twice the carabiner!
How operate it? Scan this QR code or type this adress:
Twin Gate quickdraw VS Normal sport draw Twin Gate wins on safety easily, but will be found slower by untrained climbers. If you practice you will become faster. The added safety might
be appreciated in dangerous runouts, or where safety is paramount as it might be with children, clients or work.

The FIRST machine In 1996 a strange new axe was born: it was called The Machine. It opened up a whole new world of mixed, Dry tooling and overhanging crazy ice.
The FIRST MACHINE REVOLUTION The tool of choice for steep, hard climbing, The Machine’s radically bent shaft easily clears bulges and cauliflowers. Solid placements come easily, even when the ice gets unruly. The Machine’s Cascade pick tapers down to 2.7mm for minimal ice displacement and unparalleled stick. For mixed climbing the stout Mixte pick,
which uses the 3D forging technology of Grivel. With this weapon in his hands, in January 1997 Stevie Haston, one of the world’s best ice and mixed climbers, realised the fist M9 in history in Europe and he called it “Welcome to the Machine”. Starting in 1998 experience gained from competitions
spread the idea of climbing without leashes, considered to be just an artificial way of holding an ice axe, more dangerous than useful. Grivel was the first to present an ice axe with a crook aiding leashless climbing: “top machine”. Foto Bubu Bole - ice climbing competition in Cortina.
It was love at first sight, an extension of my hand, I become a Jedi twirling a Light Sabre, I went out and climbed the first M9s and ephemeral ice. In the next few years guys and girls created new magnificent climbs, and broke the previous standards, great days. We were all Matadors. Stevie Haston - photo

The world of ice and rock was never the same again. The Machine ice tool had perfect geometry, and all top end ice axes since The Machine share this geometry.
The new machine Mountains bring to mind ice axes. The ice axe is the symbol of alpinism. When choosing an ice axe don’t just consider the price but also the fact that you’ll have it for years. Grivel, with its
200 years of experience, offers you an all Italian manufactured product with hot forging technology used by blacksmiths over the centuries.
After 18 years we remember “the Machine” by presenting 3 new axes. We developed this generation of ice tool specifically for technical climbing on all of the world’s mountains.
The Light Machine
Designed primarily for technical mountaineering and for ice climbing. Interchangeable ICE pick is tapered at the tip (3 mm) for easy penetration, even in cold ice. The stout Mix blade, 4.2 mm, will accept your “normal abuse” hooking on both ice and rock. Sliders support your hand when you pull on them, and, sliding on the shaft, let the spike and handle penetrate the snow when you push on the axe. Umbilical elastic sling make impossible to loose the tool.
The tech Machine
Designed primarily for ice climbing and dry-tooling Interchangeable ICE pick is tapered at the tip (3 mm) for easy penetration, even in cold ice. The stout Mix blade, 4.2 mm, will accept your “normal abuse” hooking on both ice and rock. The Machine’s radically bent shaft easily clears bulges and cauliflowers. Solid placements come easily, even when the ice gets unruly. Its shape allows stable hooking on both ice and rock. shaft easily clears bulges and cauliflowers. Solid placements come easily, even when the ice gets unruly
The Machine 3.0
A totally new generation for technical climbing on all of the world’s mountains. For the first time we present a shaft and head hot forged in a single piece! An unbelievable masterpiece possible only for people who hot forge metal since 1818! Interchangeable ICE pick is tapered at the tip (3 mm) for easy penetration, even in cold ice. The stout Mix blade, 4.2 mm, will accept your “normal abuse” hooking on both ice and rock.
WHY HOT FORGING? Hot forging means hammering and stretching a piece of heated metal to position the chains of molecules correctly. The material’s fibres are positioned haphazardly in its original state and heating the metal we render it “soft” and ready to assume the new shape. As a final result the fibres are lined up and positioned to provide the head with maximum strength in accordance with our requirements for the finished product. Hot forging permits different thickness in the places where it is needed rather than having the uniform thickness of a different technology.

Ski Touring & Ski Touring Competition
Helmet designed for expeditions to colder regions where a warm hat can be worn underneath. Also good for bigger heads. Designed for alpine, rock, and ice climbing. Outer shell in ABS protects against penetration, inner layer in shock absorbing polystyrene foam. One size (58/66) that can be regulated to fit once the helmet is on. Extremely efficient air circulation. Colour: metallic titanium. Hyper-light and hyper-ventilated. The poly-carbonate shell is co-moulded to a layer of expandable injected foam that absorbs the force of impact. aThe upper ventilation area is reinforced with metal mesh as protection against the penetration of sharp objects. Fresh air fl ows through the helmet from the ventilation aperture on the front, speeding up along the aeration channel while absorbing humidity and heat, before exiting at the back aperture: the best ventilation system ever! One size 54-62. Colour: yellow. Specific model designed to respect the needs of weight and comfort of ski tourers. Three main openings on the front part allow an easier elimination of sweat during hard climbs and a better ventilation of the whole head. Simplified and lighter regulation system. One size, adjustable. Specific for ski tourers Multi-opening aeration flow system One size fits all Colour: yellow.
