TERI DIMARINO Your ability to do your job, and do it right, separates you from being "just a bather" to a position that contributes to the finished product in the salon. Teri believes that a good bath, brush and dry is 50% of a great groom. The bathing room is where most stylists started. Before future groomers begin to think of clipping coat, they must first know what to expect from the hair, and how to treat it to obtain desired results. Surprisingly, many great B/B’s remain in the bathing room, preferring the security of knowing there will always be a need for their expert services. Bathers–in–training, "groomer wannabes", seasoned groomer techs and salon owners will benefit from this day–long program with tips on equipment and products to make the job easier. From getting the dog ready for the tub, to finding the right shampoo through proper bathing and blow–drying techniques, Teri will cover the B/B fundamentals. Safety issues and handling will be stressed.
TOOLS OF THE TRADE & HOW TO USE THEM
From brushes and nail clippers, muzzles to grooming loops, Teri covers equipment basics, highlighting correct uses, in an effort to make the work easier and more comfortable for pet and bather. “These techniques and tools will make the finished groom a true work of art,” says Teri. Anals and ears will be discussed.
DEMATTING…IT’S NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE
Everyone has a technique for dematting a neglected pet. For some, it’s a shave–down and then entering the pelt in a Mat Contest. For others, it’s a time–consuming, hair–splitting experience, destined to take its toll on the pet, the B/B or both. Teri examines the most common and effective products, tools and techniques for the demat dilemma without getting all tangled up.
WHAT’S IN THOSE BUBBLES??? SHAMPOOS, CONDITIONERS & SPRAY
Tocopherol, Ergocalciferol, Sodium Chloride. Teri takes a “groomers–eye” view of the stuff we use every day in language we can understand. Shampoos, sprays and conditioners are our most expendable items but, what do we really know to select the right product for our situation? (Those scary words are techno–speak for vitamin E, vitamin D and simple table salt, often found in many grooming products.)
GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BATHING & DRYING TIME
Bathing and drying are the most underestimated aspects of our jobs. Techniques can make or break a groom. The ability to properly apply products and thoroughly cleaning and then drying the pet will have a direct influence on the finish. You will hear about time–saving equipment and techniques. This program is six hours long and is included in the DO IT ALL package plan or it can be purchased separately. Includes tradeshow on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. See registration for price and schedule for times.

Olga
BICHON: FROM SHOW TO PET TRIM
If you were able to choose someone to teach you Bichon grooming secrets, you would probably pick Olga. She has won some of the top grooming contests with her Bichon and has groomed them for the conformation ring for years. In this seminar, Olga will demonstrate how to balance a dog, avoid common mistakes, and create the soft expression of the Bichon.
POODLE OLGA'S WAY
In this demonstration Olga will go over her tips and strategies to create a cute trim in no time at all. She will show you what tools she uses to make her grooms efficient and give an overall nice finish.
MIXED BREED WITH ASIAN FLARE
OLGA ZABELINSKAYA In this four-hour seminar, Olga will walk you through four different grooming demonstrations, each showcasing her unique styles and techniques. Come spend a day with one of the top groomers and learn trims that can be executed in your own salon!
Olga will show you and explain how to take a mixed breed dog and groom it to look like a baby doll, teddy bear or stuffed animal. Japanese or Asian style of grooming helps to "sell" your grooms, attract new customers and bring your grooming ability one step up to a creative way of dog grooming. You can take a mixed breed that's a drop coat or curly coat and create a mixed breed masterpiece.
DROP COAT
In this seminar you will watch Olga take a drop coat and transform it into a cute and trendy trim. She will use blending as well as shaping to demonstrate a balanced trim and give the dog a round head and fluffy legs. This is a traditional trim that clients will love and it can be modified shorter for low maintenance.
This program is four hours long and is included in the DO IT ALL package plan or can be purchased separately. Includes tradeshow on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. See registration for price and schedule for times.

This unique course is customized for groomers and you will learn how to respond to emergencies specific to your industry. Upon completion of this course, you will receive a frameable certificate stating that you are certified in dog and cat First Aid & CPR.

MEDIUM COAT
During this lecture Dr. Faver and Suzanne will discuss the medium coat and its anatomy, specific skin and hair needs, skin problems specific to the medium coated pets, history and evolution of the medium “primitive” coat and the best ingredients to use to get optimal health and beauty.

During this lecture learn how to successfully work on pets with these skin and hair problems. Groom Expo West 2018
Why are dog breeds "grouped" into certain common functions, abilities, and even coat types? What are the major dog coat types and how should each be groomed correctly? Why was each coat type created? What tools and grooming equipment are right and wrong for each type of coat? This session will also help groomers learn about what dog shows are, how they can be accessed, and how groomers can benefit from them in their local areas.
GROOMING WORKING GROUP DOGS (2PM – 3PM)
How did Working Dogs contribute to the development of modern
human economic systems? And how can we better learn to groom these literal "Giants" of the dog world? The dogs of the Working Group are not often written about or seen at grooming conferences, but they have significant grooming needs. Some even have extremely unique haircuts. We will even dare to tackle the controversies surrounding the proper care of the most common and natural dog coat of all—the Double Coat!
GROOMING THE HERDING GROUP (4 PM – 5 PM)
This session will cover, breed by breed, the grooming of these agricultural specialists. Herding Dogs broke off from the Working Group in 1983 and are among the smartest non-humans on Earth. A better understanding of some of these "bath and brush" coats, as well as the amazing history of the plethora of dog breeds and care of their varied coats, provides significant evidence for the importance of our profession. This day–long program is four hours long and included in the DO IT ALL package or can also be purchased separately. See Schedule and Registration for starting times and fees. Program includes Trade show on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Friday Seminars CAT GROOMING:
THE NEXT FRONTIER CONNIE BUCHANAN
SIX NINJA TECHNIQUES TO USE ON CATS THAT WOULD NEVER WORK ON DOGS (9 AM – 10 AM)
Join us for a live cat grooming demo where you will learn the difference between success and failure—and becoming a true feline ninja warrior! This seminar will focus on how to assess and handle a cat once assessed, tips on products, tools and equipment, techniques to complete a sanitary trim, creating crisp lines, dematting, and fou–fou finishing to achieve “cat–show–ready” results. I SAID I’D NEVER GROOM CATS! HOW DID I END UP HERE? (11 AM – 12 PM)
In this seminar, we will take a serious look at the cat grooming business; analyzing the pros and cons, eliminating fears and negative paradigms of feline grooming through education, the sharing of techniques, and most of all recognizing the absolute need from a feline’s health perspective for these services to be available to the cat–owning public! If you are one of those groomers like me, who said “I’d never groom a cat,” or someone who is thinking about the possibilities, this seminar is for you! Together we will claw our way through the world of feline grooming and have fun and laughs too! How can you not laugh at the narcissistic nature of the cat?
CATS ARE NOT DOGS AND DOGS ARE NOT CATS (2PM – 3PM)
Connie was born a dog groomer and never considered grooming cats. However, today she is a converted cat groomer who has learned many hard lessons along the way! Being an owner of both a feline and canine salon, Connie can confidently share that the most significant mistake any groomer can make is to think these two creatures have anything in common in the pet grooming world! In this seminar Connie will share the differences in cat vs. dog physiology, psychology, grooming techniques, grooming tools & equipment, and differences to the groomer in regards to physicality, scheduling, income and more.
HOW I GOT 500 CAT CLIENTS ON A 6-8 WEEK SCHEDULE (4 PM – 5 PM)
Working less and making more is the best Cat Grooming secret! Connie will share the strategies that her salon, PreZoomably Cats: Feline Groomz & Roomz has implemented to keep the cats coming through the doors. Are you “Feline Adventurous”? If so, join Connie on her journey through how she achieved a wondrous feline clientele and how to keep them coming back. We will take a good look at the numbers and the impact of a successful cat grooming business, as well as some ideas for building client relationships, tips on promotional concepts and the use of social media.

JAPANESE FREESTYLE GROOMING
DR. CLIFF FAVER
CAT OPSON
Confused about what products to use? How do you pick? Could my products or what I am doing actually be causing some of these skin issues? We will cover the science of what the skin and hair needs and some common sense methods of evaluating products. Let us take the some of the guess work out and put the “why” in choosing products. Let’s make the goal of healthy hair and skin more than just clean.

Connie Buchanan “Grooming cats has become one of the BEST business decisions I have EVER made!” In this seminar, we will take a serious look at the cat grooming business; analyzing the pros and cons, evaluating the opportunities, eliminating fears and negative paradigms of feline grooming through education and the sharing of techniques, and most of all recognizing the absolute need from a feline’s health perspective for these services to be available to the cat owning public. If you are one of those groomers who said “I’d never groom a cat”, or someone who is thinking about the possibilities, this seminar is for you! Together we will claw our way through the world of feline grooming and have some fun too! How can you not laugh at the narcissistic nature of the cat? FASTER, BETTER, LOWER COST BATHS WITH SHAMPOO DISPENSING SYSTEMS Dan Williams All the way from the most simple to most complicated systems, each of the primary types of shampoo dispensing systems will be reviewed with respect to “Pros and Cons”. This includes gallon hand pump, 32oz mixing bottle, open tub sump pump, compressed air tank, venturi type gallon draw, and diaphragm pump reservoir type systems. Each of these systems offers unique benefits that relate to a faster, better, lower cost bath. Maintenance and care for each type of system will be discussed.
This presentation helps shop owners finalize their shampoo dispensing system decision and also enables pet groomers to have the confidence to dig deeper into the shampoo system that they are considering recommending or investing in. HV DRYER TECH: ESSENTIAL FORCE DRYING FACTS & METHODS Dave Campanella Discover what really matters for enhanced dryer performance. While “Tub Time” and “Liquid Products” are critical parts of the grooming process, one’s “HV Drying Methods” are typically overlooked, undervalued and misunderstood. This seminar provides a complete understanding of the “Drying Process” backed by science and proven secrets of the trade. Learn how to avoid creating more tangles, release more matts & shedding. Replace brushing all by using your dryer to its utmost potential. Ever wonder what the difference is between all those different nozzles? Do Amps or Horse Power really matter? What is CFM? Know what to look for in a new dryer and simple maintenance tips. A fresh perspective and “must see” for any salon owner, mobile business or start–up! SAY THIS, NOT THAT Khris Berry Ever wonder what you could have or should have said in common pet grooming situations? This is a comical (and occasionally serious) approach to real life salon situations. Grab a notebook and leave equipped with responses to comments such as "I don't want my dog to look like...", "He's a rescue", "I don't like this haircut", "But they are cheaper down the street", "I need a discount because I have 4 dogs", and so many more. This fast paced and action–packed hour promises to entertain and enlighten you! GroomExpoWest.com

Weekend Topics KEEPING STYLE IN A SHORT CLIP ON DROP COATS Lisa Leady “I don’t like dogs that look like they are standing on sticks, just because the owner wants the pet short,” says Lisa Leady, a top competitive groomer and Groomer Has It Star. “Groomers need to show some style and ability, even on a pet groom. Styling is becoming a lost art, and I want to show groomers that you can still give a pet a short trim while maintaining a great look, appeal and showing some skill.” Drop Coats can be trimmed so many ways so let Lisa get you out of your rut and into some stylish trims. POODLE IN A GERMAN Jonathan David Poodles are one of the most easily recognized breeds and a breed we groom most often. But many customers don't like the feminine look of the most well–known American trims. A German trim is a great alternative for those fickle customers or those with a male dog. In this one–hour scissoring seminar, Jonathan will demonstrate how to set the lines of this beautiful trim and he will discuss the differences of this striking trim compared to other popular poodle cuts. SALON SAFETY: YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY Marco Lalau Safety mishaps can close your salon down and, at worst, cause bankruptcy. During this hour seminar, Marco will help grooming salon owners and managers keep their staff safe and avoid costly accidents. This is a must–see seminar for anyone owning or managing a salon in California. GROOMING SALONS: A PETRI DISH FOR DISEASE Dr. Cliff Faver Ever wonder what “beasties” are lurking around your grooming

salon? What about the risks to the pets, to you, or your family? What you don’t know can hurt you! We will also address some of the myths/ misconceptions from a scientific approach of some of the disease processes we commonly are exposed to. You will learn some of the common hazards you are faced with and common sense ways to minimize your exposure to them. FOR THE SHEAR JOY OF IT Dara Forleo Seeing that pretty dog that just left your shop, clean and neat, is such a great feeling. Do you care for your shears and blades like you care for the pet? This seminar focuses on the “dos and don’ts” and “ins and outs” of shear and blade maintenance. Your hands, thumb and wrist will thank you. MOBILE GROOMING TIPS AND TRICKS Angela Kumpe Angela will share advice, tips and tricks on many topics of Mobile Grooming. These bits of information can help you while you build a successful mobile grooming business. Some of these topics include scheduling, increasing tips, invoicing, price increases, setting rules and sticking to them, marketing, cancelations, add on services, latch key services, and much more. THE HIRING AND FIRING OF BOTH EMPLOYEES AND CUSTOMERS Ryan Mulcahy Would you like to actually take a day off or even a vacation, without having to close your business? Ryan will talk about what to look for in hiring people and how to tell if they will be a good fit for your business, beyond just grooming dogs. Also, how to develop that employee into the superstar you can trust to run the show while you are away. On the customer end, Ryan will
discuss the how’s and why’s new customers come to your business and to decide if this is business you want. Alternatively, how and when to decide to cut ties with an employee, as well as that troublesome customer. PERSONALITY PLUS Jill Pipino Does your salon see a lot of Maltese or Yorkie mixes? Are you bored with the same haircuts? Have you ever wondered what you could do different? Jill will show you three different styles on the same dog to add some pizzazz and style to your drop coated designer dogs without a lot of time and effort. SO, YOU WANT TO TEACH Dara Forleo Laws vary state by state, but post–secondary career schools must be licensed to comply with federal regulations. This is a crash course in how to get licensed in your state properly, how to write curriculum, addressing tuition, making sure you are in compliance with state and federal regulations for certificate and diploma training. GROOMER FITNESS Ryan Mulcahy Grooming wearing you out? Got some aches and pains? Along with a long grooming career, Ryan Mulcahy has been a competitive US Masters swimmer and a swim coach. With his years of training and methods of recovery, as well as injury prevention, he can aid you in improving your grooming as well as your life. The seminar will consist of different strength training methods and how they are relevant to grooming, Ryan will delve into common grooming related injuries and how to avoid them or mitigate the effects of the injury. He will also touch on injury prevention, such as chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture, among others.

Weekend Topics grooming safer and calmer. BIG AND BEAUTIFUL: THE STANDARD POODLE Jay Scruggs If there’s a single breed that you’re certain to find coming to you for grooming, it’s the Poodle. All of them—no matter what trim style their owners select—should be elegant, well-balanced, and scissored. Grooming difficult feet, achieving a beautiful topknot, and getting that overall balanced look are not the easiest tasks in the world. Jay will demonstrate techniques and short cuts, provide timesaving tips, and show you how to do quick and stylish everyday pet trims. PERFECT BICHON HEAD Olga Zabelinskaya Trying to achieve the perfect Bichon head is something every groomer strives to do. Olga quickly became one of the most well–known and respected for her achievements with Bichon Frises. In this seminar Olga will share her tips to make your Bichon heads perfect every time with easy to follow guidelines. Lots of common mistakes are made when it comes to this breeds profile and trying to correct those after the hair is gone can be a nightmare. Let Olga show you how to avoid these mistakes and make your next Bichon competition ready. 8 KEY THINGS YOU MUST DO WELL ON FACEBOOK TO GROW YOUR GROOMING BUSINESS Heather Heuman Have you ever been frustrated by not getting leads for new customers like you want? Wish you knew how to make Facebook not suck all of your time? You won’t want to miss this! Heather Heuman will share practical key systems you can put in place that will help you maximize the results you can get using the powerful place of Facebook to get more phone calls,
messages and positive branding for your grooming business. IT’S A SNAP! SNAP–ON COMBS TO SIMPLIFY YOUR EVERYDAY GROOMS Anne Francis Top competitor and GroomTeam USA member Anne Francis has spent her entire career in a salon doing your everyday pet trims. Over the years she has figured out to cut down time using snap on combs. Anne will show you all the tricks she has picked up along the way to make your everyday grooming easier and quicker with snap on combs. WHEN YOUR CLIENT WANTS YOU TO BE A VET Dr. Cliff Faver Why do my clients ask me vet questions? If I answer them, could I get in trouble? How do I answer the questions so I don’t upset the vet? These are all questions we ask ourselves from time to time. Come and learn what you can and can’t say legally and when to refer cases versus handle them yourself. We will also talk about when the vet blames you for causing issues. Did I really cause it or is he looking for a scapegoat? We will also discuss strategies on getting veterinarians to work with groomers. PUTTING PERSONALITY IN SHIH TZU AND MIXED BREED HEADS Sue Watson Do you have problems getting that right look on the little characters you are working on? If so, Sue will show you some different ways to capture the best look for the dog you are having difficulty with. “Sometimes when you see the same dogs all the time you tend to put the same face on all of them, but they are all different and should look that way,” says Sue. Come see if you can learn something new or even add suggestions to others.
WHY DO I NEED INSURANCE? Linda Nigma Insurance can be complicated and a little scary. Do you need insurance? If so, what coverage and how much? Are the animals that you are grooming covered under your policy? What happens if your business is interrupted due to a catastrophe like a fire? This seminar will define the importance of being properly covered by your insurance policies. Linda will discuss what coverage you need to help you protect you and your business’s financial stability, as well as Animal Bailee and Pet Groomers Professional Liability. THE TIMELESS SPIRAL TRIM Dawn Omboy The Spiral trim was first done in 1981 at the Atlanta Pet Fair. Learn more about the beginning of this timeless classic that was the basis of Creative Styling as we know it today. The Spiral has continued to delight groomers to this very day and has been beautifully executed by many over the years. Dawn will show you how to set the pattern in a live demo and top it off with a bit of Airbrushing instruction. Included is a history of how it all began, thanks to the Godfather of Creative Styling, Jerry Schinberg. BICHONS ARE BITCHIN! Barbara Prueckel In this fun and playful seminar, Barb will take you through the breed standard of this fantastic breed, and show how easy it is to make our clients’ pets look like little Bichon superstars. There will be a demo on her own dog Prince (famous at the Murano Hotel!) as well as a spectacular slide show. From tricks like making those floppy heads stand up to perfecting the little round bum cheeks, Barb will give you all her tips on the breed she specializes in worldwide. Don't miss out on this one!
