am not ashamed to admit it. Okay, maybe I am ashamed to admit it, but I was one who couldn’t wait until the kids were grown and out on their own. I would be able to go where I wanted, come back when I felt like it, buy whatever I wanted for myself and not have it ruined and have uninterrupted conversations with other human beings. In short, I could have peace and quiet. I reflected upon this as I sit staring at the back of the beast that has entered our lives. He is a Boxer puppy who is, at this moment, sporting a not so fashionable cone upon his head. He was neutered

yesterday. I should have had a lobotomy for bringing him into our once peaceful household. It all started innocently enough. My daughter has owned boxers for at least 15 years. They have all been great with her kids, which is a feat all on its own (You’d have to know those kids). Her dogs were super intelligent, on par with the Standard Poodles that I had owned for many years. After contemplating, for many months, owning a Boxer myself, I began my search in earnest. I constantly scoured the Internet for one. I called Kennel associations in the surrounding area. I contacted

Boxer rescues who unfortunately didn’t have anything available that I felt would fit in with our lifestyle. After weeks of searching, I found an ad for puppies. I contacted the people who placed the ad and spoke with them at length about the puppies and their parents. I asked how often they had litters. The breeder sounded great, the dogs sounded super and the distance from our home was only a bit over 2 hours away. My husband knew what he was in for, as he has always told me that I am like the proverbial dog with a bone when I get an idea in my head. He’s pretty well got me pegged. When I

want something I want it NOW! I made arrangements with the breeders to come see the puppies on a Friday evening after work. If we were to indeed get a puppy, I wanted to be able to have an entire weekend to spend with it before having to return to work. After seeing pictures of the litter that the woman had sent me, I was pretty certain which pup I would choose. So on that fateful Friday, when we arrived at the breeder’s home and she produced the dogs, I immediately picked up the one that I had seen through her emails. He was the biggest pup in the litter, she informed me, and at 7 weeks of age, he weighed in at 12 pounds. Of course there was no other obvious name for him than Tyson. Like a million other Boxers out there, that was going to be it. Although, I did think “Joe” would have been cute. Get Half pg (7"x4-7/8")-print:Layout 1 it? “Joe Boxer”. Well, I thought it was

kind of nice. He is now almost six months old and has quintupled his puppy weight. He is without a doubt the goofiest dog that I have ever in my life owned. This dog has absolutely no sense of self preservation. I know all puppies are uncoordinated. This dog is apparently closely related to the Chimpanzee. He will lie on our couch, stretched out to his maximum length and will allow his head to slide off the front of the couch. In super slow motion, the weight of his head will start pulling his body off the couch and onto the floor. The dog has absolutely no qualms about this happening. As he hits the floor head first, it does not phase him in the slightest. He doesn’t lift his head, he doesn’t look surprised. He shows no emotion whatsoever, other than to let out a huge sigh, as if to say “Yup, it hap4/18/14 11:40 AM Page 1 pened again.”

I have long ago stopped counting how many times he has chased the tennis ball, only to have it roll under the curio cabinet as he runs face first into the curved glass on the front of the cabinet. As of this writing, he still hasn’t figured out that when it happens, the ball is well within his reach under it. He just sits and looks through the glass at the carousel horses that are inside, convinced that the ball is hiding among them. Evenings here are a top speed event that begins at the end of the hallway, with him chasing our little dog down that hall. They turn the corner abruptly into the living room, go around the recliner, back into the hallway, into the kitchen and around the table. The problem with this is as they hit the tile floor in front of the French doors, the Boxer inevitably loses his footing on the tile and wipes out right into his food and water

bowls. This in turn sends kibble and water flying through the air into the Alpine tree that sits in front of the doors. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve picked out “Taste of the Wild” food from among its branches. We own about 2 1/2 acres and believe me, he fully utilizes every square inch of it that he can. That is with the exception of that portion that has electric fence around it to contain our little horses. This dog absolutely loves eating horse crap. His desire for it is reduced only when he tries to sneak into the field to get at a piece and he has to brave the fencing. Nothing can compare to seeing that dog lit up when he gets too close to that fence. After his third encounter he now stays about 20 feet away from it. He does sound amazingly more like a piglet being held by its tail however, than a dog when he runs into it. Apparently, his vocal range is more soprano than bass.

Who knew? Although he’s definitely the boss around here, our little mix dog takes his share of beatings from the Boxer. Tyson just takes those humongous front feet of his and tries to slap the crap out of the little guy. The little one will eventually tire of the event though and manages to grab Tyson by an ear and it’s all over. There goes that piglet squeal again. Of the one hundred and forty four of those beautiful Marigolds that I have lovingly planted the whole way along the front of the house, seventeen are now missing. I still have hope however that when they re-emerge from the Boxer’s bowels, perhaps they will regrow where ever HE decides to plant them. I have found that there is no faster way to make a dog swallow than by saying, “What do you have?” This works for anything from an emerald ear-

ring, to plastic price tags, to unwound spools of thread and back to those precious marigolds. The most amusement that I’ve had in quite a while was when he ate the thread. He has done it several times actually. You would have to know my husband and his ability to cope with dog poop to really appreciate it. I came home from work the other week and had the following story relayed to me. “You should have seen what happened here this morning,” Dave said. “That dog of yours,” he added. “What NOW?” I asked sighing. Every single day there is a new crisis over this dog. “Well ...” my hubby said, dragging the word out. “I let him down to go to the bathroom. I’m sitting here on the porch. I see him pooping and then he jumps up and runs about 15 feet. He stops and spins around and then poops again. Then he jumps up again and runs some more. Now he’s running

through the yard and he keeps looking behind himself. I didn’t know what the heck was wrong with him,” Dave said. Me, I just knew what was coming however, I let him finish his story. “So I go into the yard to see what’s wrong with him and when I get closer to him I see that he has pieces of poop stuck together that he’s dragging around behind himself. They were stuck on a bunch of thread. I had to get a rag and pull it out of him. Do you have any idea how disgusting that was?” He asked. Dave has a tender stomach anyhow, and I was picturing this whole episode in my mind. I absolutely thought I was going to lose it, I laughed so hard. “I didn’t find it funny at all,” he responded. “Hey, it’s nothing that I don’t have to do with him on a regular basis after he eats paper towels,” I told him. “Deal with it,” I threw in. This dog also goes ballistic when my husband goes somewhere in the

truck and doesn’t take Tyson with him. The crying, howling and running from door to door absolutely sends me. Nothing I do or give him will console him. It takes about 15 minutes of carrying on until he gets it out of his system. He then lies on our bed and whimpers like he is totally crushed that he has been left alone here with me. I did break a fly swatter over his rear end yesterday when I couldn’t stand it any longer. It was a pretty one too ... sigh. Last weekend one of Dave’s daughters stopped by for a visit. It takes this girl about 4 hours to do her makeup and if one itty bitty little thing is wrong with it, she washes her entire face and starts all over again. She’s been known to spend all day at home just because she couldn’t get it perfect. She’s also a Fashionista. She is ALWAYS dressed to a “T”. So upon the porch she and her

husband came. She pulled out a chair and proceeded to sit upon it. Tyson immediately went over to her and jumped up giving her a huge lick across her left eye. She started to squeal (oddly sounding a bit like that piglet thing) and Tyson jumped backwards. As he did so however, he made sure to give her a big old slobber of drool across the lap of her jeans. “Ewwww,” she said as she squinted through her mascara smeared eye at her lap. She wiped at the drool with her hand and, believe me, it didn’t help matters any. Oddly enough, their visit ended shortly thereafter. So as I sit looking at the back of a dog who is now happily munching on my $1200 carving of a log cabin on the front deck, I find myself with two thoughts... One: I miss my children. Two: I need a bigger fly swatter. ✂

ilestones make you stop and think. Anniversaries and birthdays will bring back memories and find you sifting through your own sands of time and reviewing your life, your love, and your heart. I recently had two milestones come up that made me stop and review these last several years, but they were anniversaries related to The Village Groomer. The store turned 45 this year, and I marked my 20th year at the helm. Twenty years. It seems like it can’t be possible. There are days when it feels like it went by in a flash, and other days that are so challenging, it feels like an eternity. Thankfully, most recent days are the ones that feel like they went by in a flash, at least that’s

how it feels today! First, let me get to something right up front. It was never my intention to run my family business. I grew up there, everyday, bathing, brushing, and sometimes forced into servitude at a grooming table. I watched my father, and then my mother, work so unbelievably hard at this business of pet care. There were plenty of times as a kid that my folks couldn’t attend things because they owned The Village Groomer. There were many times they arrived late because they were ‘on the clock,’ or ‘the bather called out sick,’ or , of course, there were the evenings John Q. Petowner simply forgot to pick up Shamu the Samoyed, and my dad sat there until giving up and just tak-

ing Shamu home. Before the advent of cell phones, this was not that uncommon! Who remembers those good old days? The last day of high school, I finished my last final, boarded my 1972 powder blue Volkswagen bus (a gift from my hippie dad), and headed west at a speedy 60 mph, except on hills, on the Mass Pike, which sometimes slowed me to 40 mph. Anyone that’s ever driven an old VW bus knows what I’m talking about! I first headed to the Croton-On-Hudson Music Festival, hosted by the late, great Pete Seeger, and then north to the Unitarian Camp and Conference Center that I would call home on and off for the next decade. Walpole (my hometown) and bye-bye Village Groomer! Now, don’t get me wrong. I loved the business. I just didn’t love where I grew up, and the shop happened to be in the same town. The thought of seeing the exact same people, everyday, for the next 50 years was more than I could bear. To say that I was bullied a little bit would be true, but I wasn’t a kid that backed down and took it. I went home, had discussions with my dad about what to do, and confronted the meanies. Having incredibly supportive parents that were into social justice and peace activism was a bonus to this weird kid. My parents are both incredibly engaging, intellectual, ‘thinking’ people. So, what was the bully to say when my response to their name-calling was a very calm question? “Why do you say these things to me? Does it make you feel better about

yourself? Does it make you more popular? Do you want to talk about it?” Nevertheless, I wanted out. I wanted to be in the Berkshires, go to UMass Amherst and get on with my life. The bottom fell out, however, when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Fast-forward to 1994, I am leaving the hills of western Mass, leaving a cool job as a radio personality, leaving my community and friends and church, and heading back home to ‘help out’ while my dad gets treatment. The game plan was to get dad back on his feet, return to western Mass, and start divinity school in the fall. Well, life is what happens while we’re making other plans, John Lennon once said. It’s true. So, that was 20 years ago. Dad passed in 1996 after a long illness. My mom wasn’t really up to running the store with the same energy.

She was broken-hearted, and that makes everything hard, especially at The Village Groomer, where my dad was so beloved and his death was discussed everyday, all day for many, many months, like some sort of freaky grooming groundhog day! But here I am, twenty years later, and I never did get to divinity school. Andover - Newton Theology may not have heard the last of me, however. reflect on this journey inside the walls of The Village Groomer? Where we are, where we go, how we spend our days and who we spend them with is simply the backdrop of our lives. It is the palette of our own creation of our own life, right? Well, I have had 20 incredible years running the family business, knee-deep in challenges and life-lessons I would have learned somewhere, somehow, but for me it was inside the 4 walls of a little grooming shop called ‘The Village Groomer.’ Over the next few months, I am going to write about some of the bigger lessons I have learned through this experience as a way of stopping to remember what is important. Some of it will be serious, a lot of it will be funny, but mostly, I hope it’s a good read!

HOW DOES A CONTROL FREAK LEARN TO LET GO? NOT EASILY! I am a control freak. There it is. It’s out there. I can do it better, faster, more efficiently than anyone! But wait! I am surrounded by people that are far more talented than me in the world of grooming. I work day after day with some of the best, most gifted groomers I have ever seen. So, where does ego take me? How do you manage being a control freak over something that you are in charge of, but cannot do as well as the people around you? I liken it to the most successful recording engineers in music. Years ago, my friend Aaron was working at a recording studio in Manhattan. I was contributing a song to an album as a fundraiser for my church youth group, and we could use the studio overnight if it wasn’t booked. Around 2 o’clock in the morning, we would grab food

from one of the little ethnic restaurants in the neighborhood, and off we’d go to The Power Station, which was owned by Bon Jovi’s uncle. It was this incredible, state of the art studio. Eric Clapton was recording there during the day, and the infamous Billy Squier, who recorded the infamous ‘Stroke Me, Stroke Me’ was also working on a disc! A new singer, that a talent scout had discovered, was recording as well. People said she had a 4-octave range and her voice was just mind-blowing. Her name was Mariah Carey! So, here’s my question! Do you think that the dude that discovered Mariah Carey had a 4-octave range and a mind-blowing voice? No! That’s where ego checked out, and the businesswoman checked in. Having grown up in this world of professional pet grooming, I know what I see, and I know balance and

symmetry and profile. When I watch someone groom, I know what I am looking for. I was lucky enough to spend ten years working with Chris Pawlosky, who taught me so much about what my eyes had already been seeing. She helped put names to the knowledge, if you will. My challenge was to be an effective leader to a staff of people that were exceptional at their trade, so it was my intention to be an exceptional boss and support my staff. That’s where ego checked out, and I could commit to being the very best at what it was that I do best, which is customer relations, service, business management and creating a welcoming space for my coworkers and customers. The control freak in me had to let go, and let the people that were incredibly talented create the beautiful work that they were capable of. One of the curses of being a con-

trol freak is micromanaging the people around you. One of the gifts of the last 20 years has been to surrender to that feeling and rather than micromanage, allow people to do what it is they do best and encourage them to grow. Many years ago, I attended a workshop in Boston on management, and the nugget I took away was this: “The bottom line is that you are the prototype for your followers. Your actions speak louder than words. You must pay careful attention to your own behavior. You are a living example of what it takes to go to the next level. You will replicate yourself.” Michael Hyatt What this meant to the control freak in me was to look out for the drive and desire of my staff and be a support person to guide them toward their own goals. Whether it was someone who really wanted to compete in grooming contests, or perhaps someone that really embraced the customer

service side of the business, it was my job as a leader not to try to steer them in the direction I thought was best for them, but to allow them to blossom in the talents and abilities that they were excited for. That was a liberating realization for the control freak in me. Let people excel at the things they are excited about, at the things that inspire them! I leave this piece with this next thought. I will talk to you next month.

any years ago I lived with an adorable MiniDachshund named Rosey. Every time I attempted to greet her, she urinated. I ignored her, she urinated. I tossed treats on the ground to distract her. She urinated. I had my roommate put Rosey in a crate for about 10 minutes so she couldn’t greet me as I entered the house. She urinated. No matter what we did, Rosey leaked when she greeted people. This type of urination goes by a number of names—submissive urination, submissive wetting, excitement urination and greeting urination. Regardless of what you call it, it’s a big nuisance for

dog owners. At the time I lived with Rosey, I wasn’t a behaviorist. I worked as the manager of a small humane society. One of the members of the board of directors was a long-time Westie breeder. She gave me my first hint about how to fix this problem—treats. Mary Lou Ludlow said that dogs can’t eat and pee at the same time. She recommended that I toss a bunch of treats on the ground when I entered the house. As with many home-grown solutions, this one “kinda” worked. When she took the treats, she seemed to forget about wetting. The problem was that Rosey preferred greeting to eating. When I

would throw the treats in front of her, she would simply make a beeline past the treats to squat right in front of me and tinkle. This was not exactly what I hoped for. The next suggestion I got was from a trainer who told me that if you could keep the dog away from you for a couple of minutes, the drive to greet with a tinkle would fade and you could solve the problem. The recommended tool was a kiddy gate. We dutifully got a kiddy gate to block Rosey from getting to me too fast. Again, it kinda worked. The result was identical to using the crate. When I finally went through the

As we all know, most dogs grow out of submissive urination as they mature. With puppies, I don’t worry about it too much. Once an animal hits 18 months it’s probably a part of their mature personality and may warrant taking the time to try to fix it. kiddy gate, it triggered Rosey’s drive to greet me and she would dutifully rush forward and squat. If you’d like to have something else to try, here’s a different take on Mary Lou’s strategy that has some advantages beyond just flinging food around. First, get a clicker. An inexpensive “box clicker” is perfect for this task. Now, associate the clicker with food.

That is easily done. Say ‘sit’. If the dog sits, click the clicker and drop a treat on the ground. If you suspect the dog might be afraid of odd noises, put the clicker in your pocket at first. When the dog happily wags its tail when it hears the click, you are good to go. CONTROLLING THE BEHAVIOR: Mary Lou’s suggestion focused on

triggering a food response to compete with submissive urination. That can work, but the method is without form or structure. Once you add the clicker, something interesting happens. One of the functions of the clicker is to end the behavior. The dog learns that everything up to the click is to be remembered and can lead to a tangible treat. To use the tool in greeting, here are the key factors: 1) Find the threshold where the behavior is triggered. If the submissive urination occurs consistently at three feet, you need to know that. 2) Click before the dog hits the threshold. Start clicking and tossing a treat outside the three foot zone. Over a series of repetitions, you’ll notice that the dog actually stops coming closer than three feet. The dog has learned to go to a particular spot to get the reward.

3) Do multiple repetitions on each greeting. Each time you do a greeting, do multiple repetitions with clicks and treats. Do more reps even if the dog wets at some point in the process. 4) Add a cue that tells the dog what’s coming. Start using a specific phrase to go with greetings. You can say something like “look who’s here” or “company” – any phrase will do as long as it’s the same pattern every time. 5) Have the dog hungry when doing training sessions so the food is more important than normal. 6) Repeat, repeat, repeat. Controlling a simple physiological reaction can be the secret to reducing or eliminating submissive urination. You’ll note that I said “reducing or

eliminating.” Sometimes the best you get is a reduction. You can also reduce the intensity of the behavior by doing the things most commonly suggested. This includes not bending over top of the dog. Sometimes merely squatting down and turning sideways will reduce the behavior. Other things include not touching the dog at the withers, avoiding eye contact and, as a last resort; confining greetings to outdoors—a major inconvenience, but not as inconvenient as cleaning up a mess. As we all know, most dogs grow out of submissive urination as they mature. With puppies, I don’t worry about it too much. have been grooming Barkley since he was a puppy. In fact, he predates my mobile grooming van. One of the things Barkley looks forward to his “hug” when he enters my grooming van. This hug is really a pet assessment. A pet assessment is where I go from head to tail with deliberate intent and purpose to determine if they are healthy enough to groom. There may have been changes since the last time I saw them, especially if this is an older pet. On more than one occasion, I have rescheduled a groom due to problems found during the assessment. There is no amount of income that could compensate for the mental

anguish over the loss of a pet. I know, because I have been there as well. For new clients, the assessment should be done with the owner present. You want all pre-existing conditions noted before the owner leaves. You do not want to be blamed for something that was there before hand and also serves to reduce “misunderstandings” between yourself and the client. In addition, during the assessment the owner sees how well their pet handles being handled. It presents a good opportunity to educate your clients on pet care and offer and charge for extra services needed. I have always found that educated clients are good

clients. The added benefit is that this assessment demonstrates to the pet owner a level of professionalism that sets you apart from your competition. I first look at the pet overall. Is he bouncy with bright eyes? Or is he lethargic, coughing, or having trouble breathing? Are his eyes dull? Coughing may be an indicator of kennel cough, respiratory infections, canine influenza, or a heart condition. Add in runny noses and eyes and you have a serious health concern. None of which you want in your facility. Watch them walk. Does he appear to be in pain? The worse bite I ever received was from an arthritic golden retriever I was helping

into my van. If it is a cat, the two things I look for are dilated eyes and heavy panting. Both indicate stress and a cat under stress can have a heart attack fairly quickly. I am very quick to end a cat grooming if the cat begins to pant during the groom. Before I touch a pet, I keep a muzzle close and my face at a distance.

If I am uncomfortable or unable to touch him, he goes home. I will not risk my livelihood by a potentially career ending bite. I start with the mouth. Gums should be pink, except for those breeds with mottled or dark gums such as Chows Chows and Springer Spaniels. A yellowish tinge may indicate liver failure. Bluish is hypoxic. There is

no blood flow. And pale gums are an indicator of shock. Barkley has been rescheduled because of pale gums. Blood work revealed a problem in his liver, which was resolved quickly because of immediate care. Teeth in poor shape cause mouth pain, which in turn, creates snappy dogs. Take this opportunity to educate your clients on dental care. Do you offer dental products for sale? Eyes should be bright and dilate equally. Unequal dilation or rapidly moving eyes are a sign of neurological problems. Hardened discharge may have irritated and caused raw skin underneath. Red eyes may be an indicator

of stress or an eye infection. Foul odor, redness, discharge, and head shaking are all signs of an ear infection. I will not clean or pluck ears in this condition. Very thick looking ears may be a hematoma or severe matting. Use caution when removing severe matting from the ear as blood vessels could rupture as pressure from mats is released. Arthritis or leg injuries will cause pain when moved or touched. A pet in pain can bite. Pain in the spine can be neurological in origin. Check pads for ingrown nails, debris, or cuts. Even well behaved pets may have feet issues. I groom a couple of pets that do not get their nails done. If the belly area is distended or hard, refer to vet immediately as this could be a sign of bloat. Drooling and a very uncomfortable looking pet may accompany it. Note any lumps, bumps, cysts, or warts on their body. You do not want

to shave them off during the groom. Check the skin for irritations, wounds, and parasites. Can you even see the skin? You have no idea what you will find once the mats are removed. I have found open sores than required veterinary treatment. The first time you perform a pet assessment it will take longer than that of an established client. I do not require the owner to be present during subsequent assessments, only the first time. For me, it’s part of the greeting process. As I am saying hello to the pet and making kissy faces, I simply run my hands over his body and pay attention to body language. Encourage your clients to continue this at home. Their pet stands a better chance of recovery when problems are brought to light as early detection means early intervention. Recommend any concerns found be followed up at their vet and keep notes on their client card.

At Barkley’s last groom, I found a growth on his leg that was not there last month. The veterinarian said it was a benign fibroma. It is very easy to remove while it is small before it impacts the leg. After removal, the mass was sent for biopsy. It was not a benign fibroma but a nerve sheath tumor. THE NIGHT ‘IT’

t had been a long, beastly hot day. I just finished my last dog, a sweet little Shih Tzu named Binky. Binky lives near my shop, so I always drop him off on my way home. I put Binky in the back seat of my car and we began our short journey to his home. While driving, I allowed myself a brief fantasy of how wonderful it would be to jump in the shower and spend a quiet evening at home with the air conditioner cranked up... but that was not to be. I had promised my friend Jill that we would go to the big Bingo game tonight. “Come on,” Jill coaxed. “You

can’t spend all your life chained to that grooming table.” I knew she was right. Speakers at the last seminar I attended warned us about ‘Groomer Burnout’ and urged us to pursue interests that were not pet related. Besides, you play bingo sitting down. My tired feet really appreciate that. A familiar unpleasant smell jolted me back to reality just as I was turning into Binky’s driveway. Oh no! It was Binky and he was going potty on my back seat. Oh well, at least it was easy to clean—he made nice firm ‘tootsie rolls’. I headed home for a quick shower

then jumped back in my car to pick up Jill. When we reached the Bingo Hall, the parking lot was full. I grabbed my bingo bag from the floor of the back seat and we headed inside. It was the biggest game of the year and the hall was packed. The only seats left were right in front of the restroom door. It was like an oven inside, but thankfully, there was a huge fan at the end of each table providing welcome relief for the players. Although I was bombarded with pet care questions from all over the table, I had a really great time. Jill and I laughed and chatted and enjoyed the brisk breeze

As the ‘creature’ scurried along the table, chaos overtook the Bingo Hall. Convinced that it must be alive, even the most devout bingo fans stampeded for the exits. I had to think fast. I reached into my pocket, grabbed a Kleenex, and as the creature rolled past me—I bravely scooped it up. “I’ve got it!” I shouted, as I turned and dashed through the restroom door behind me. A quick flush and I re-appeared with the triumphant announcement of “It’s gone!” I breathed a huge sigh of relief as it appeared that I was the only one who knew the true identity of the ‘creature’. At least I thought I was ... As Jill and I were driving home, she turned to me and said “You groomers sure have a weird sense of humor.” ✂ 6 inch

Instantly, I realized that one of Binky’s ‘tootsie rolls’ had fallen into my bag. It sailed through the air, hit the middle of the table, bounced and began rolling. Blood curdling screams erupted as it made its way down the table. It was like the parting of the Red Sea as chairs went flying and bingo cards scattered. It rolled to the end of the table and hit the fan. Then, propelled by the fan ... it started back up the table, all the while gathering speed.

THE “WHOLE” PET: THE DIRT ON HOLISTIC GROOMING

T

he word “holistic” is currently a bit of a buzzword in the American language. It brings up connotations of woo-woocrunchy-granola-touchy-feely-New Age feel-goodism. But what exactly does it mean and how does it pertain to the grooming industry? I asked two women, who have not only openly embraced holistic grooming, but have taken steps to teach what they have

learned to other groomers... all with the well being of pets in mind. The first person I heard use the term “holistic grooming,” was Sheryl Woods. Sheryl owns and operates a cat specialty house call grooming business in Illinois called Wet Whisker Feline Grooming. She was the first person I ever heard speak of grooming a cat without “scruffing,” (holding firmly onto the back of the cat’s neck.) She

got my interest with that concept. I consider myself to be an excellent and kind cat groomer, but I have always “scruffed.” Sheryl explained that cats perceive this as an aggressive action and become defensive. I had never thought of that, and tried grooming cats in a new way, with much success. I’ve been learning from her ever since. I asked, “What do you consider holistic cat grooming to be?” She replied

quite simply, “It’s all about what is best for the cat.” Sheryl had a career change at age 50, and went to grooming school. “I was quickly labeled the ‘cat nut’ due to my extreme preference for grooming cats. I didn’t like grooming cats surrounded by tables of dogs and I could tell the cats didn’t like it either. I also didn’t feel it was right to have to muzzle frightened cats. The teachers would talk about control methods used in salons they’d worked in, and to me, it sounded like torture. Taping, dunking bags, forcefully held pets, and more. We had a ‘cat specialist’ come in for a 3-day seminar and the specialist advocated scruffing and air muzzles. Looking at the methods from a cat’s perspective, I knew in my gut it wasn’t right. But I figured these were people who knew how it should be done, and who was I to say differently? I was just a student. By the time I graduated the school, my ‘crazy cat lady’ label was firmly in place. I advocated grooming cats in a separate room and was the goto person for handling felines. I started my own cat grooming business before I graduated. For what were called

‘aggressive cats,’ I used the methods I’d been taught, of scruffing and air muzzles. I didn’t like how the cats would become catatonic with the use of those methods. I’d been taught that the cat was now ‘calm,’ yet I received one of my worst bites trying to get an air muzzle on an ‘aggressive cat’. I quickly decided this method was bad, as the cats were just frightened, not aggressive. The state of ‘calm’ was actually the cat frozen in fear. Why in the world would anyone want to put cats through such abuse? By trial and error I learned how to approach cats and work with them. Once I abandoned the force methods, the difference in cat behavior was astounding. They responded calmly and affectionately. My house call cat grooming business really took off.” Sheryl was clearly onto a successful method of handling cats. “I heard from owners how their cat had come home from the salon and hidden for days, or had become very fearful. What these cats were going through was traumatizing them and it was wrong. I became the person the veterinarians would refer to for cats who couldn’t

be sedated but had been banned from salons. They’d heard from clients how I worked with the cats, treated them with respect, and was able to groom them successfully.” She continued, “So, in summary, my holistic approach to cat grooming was due to a realization that the traditional force methods didn’t work with felines. A completely different approach was needed for cats; one that took into consideration how they view the world and interact with it. One that treated them with respect and compassion.” Sheryl became an advocate for changing the way groomers handle cats, and was vocal in internet grooming groups. “I was floored by how many groomers rejected what I said and even became angry. That is something I’ll never understand.” She began a Facebook group called Holistic Cat Grooming. The description of the group is, Indicate color number when ordering.

in part, “A group for professional cat groomers to learn more about and discuss all aspects of holistic (mind, body, spirit,) grooming.” Sheryl summed things up by saying, “It means addressing not just the groom, but relating to the cats psychology, the comfort of their body, and their feeling of security by developing a bond. All these things are interrelated; holistic grooming isn’t about the one thing you can do when the cat is flipping out on your table. It’s about preventing that scenario from ever happening in the first place. Holistic grooming involves learning how to relate to the many varied personalities of cats, understanding behavior and incorporating this understanding into your grooming methods. It’s about building a bond of trust so the cat is a

willing participant in the groom. Holistic grooming also involves the cat’s owner and the environment in which the cat lives.” Phrased like that, embracing a holistic method of handling cats makes a tremendous amount of sense. But what about incorporating such methods when working with dogs? Mary Oquendo, a mobile stylist from Connecticut, says, “I am not the groomer I was 10 years ago. The holistic path has been a journey for me. This method of working with animals chose me.” Even as a newer groomer, Mary was able to experiment with how she handled animals to find the most effective methods. “I found, over time, that working within the pets parameters worked a whole lot better than trying to force things on them. By trial

and error I was able to find methods that were effective, and then experiment with ways to keep pets calm and happy.” For example, she might allow the pet’s owner to stay with it if she felt that would make things easier, or she would work to calm and reassure a frightened pet rather than force it to conform to grooming techniques. These were early steps along her path to holistic grooming. “My focus is on what is best for the pet, mentally and physically.” Currently, Mary uses a variety of things in her van to ensure that pets are calm about the grooming process. Crystals as are tucked here and there, and she even keeps a large piece of rose quartz in the bath tub so that every pet is bathed with the gentle energy that crystal is purported to possess.

She also plays her favorite music, Steven Halpern’s Chakra Suite. “Basically what it does is cycle through the energy centers of the pets body, and mine, too. Chakras have been found to correspond with the major nerve plexus in the body. This is calming and soothing and keeps the environment serene. The pets are more relaxed, and relaxed pets behave better.”

Mary continued, “Holistic does not necessarily mean that I have to use all natural, organic products, but rather I choose what is best suited to the pet. I take control and make that determination. This means I want to know the ingredients in the products I use. That goes for cleaning products, too. I prefer to use natural products in my van, when possible. I also have a

UV sanitizer.” She avoids using harsh chemicals when possible. “In the end, it’s important to remember that holistic isn’t just about the pet, it is taking everything into consideration; the pet, the client and the groomer. No one thing trumps something else. Everything is a consideration, and decisions are based on what is best for all three”, states Mary. Mary also began a Facebook page called Holistic Dog Grooming to help educate dog groomers about holistic methods. “My goal for the page is not to force my opinions on anyone, but to educate. I hope that groomers will begin to think that there might be a better way of doing things. It’s a non-judgmental site, where I hope ideas will be introduced and shared. Ideally, groomers who participate will find things that resonate with them, and take steps to introduce holistic practices into their daily work.” All the woo-woo and touchy-feely aside, grooming holistically merely means giving consideration to the well being of the pet in its entirety. It is more than giving a good haircut, it is thinking of the dog or cat as a complex, sensitive, living being and treating it with the respect and kindness that will support its mental, psychological and physical well being. A good groom is expected from all of us, but a great groom leaves the pet feeling as good as it looks. ✂

KC registration statistics place the Dachshund as one of the most popular breeds, adding them to our list of Bread & Butter clients. They come in two sizes and three coat varieties: smooth, wirehaired and longhaired. This segment will cover the Standard Longhaired pet trim. Many of the techniques shown can be used for show dogs, however this segment is geared towards making the pet look their best. The model, although a retired champion, is an older spayed female. Spaying tends to change the coat, sometimes creating softer, thicker undercoat. Although not ideal, thinning shears may be required in some instances to help blend

many of the areas. In this particular pet, the undercoat, especially the undercarriage, is profuse so sculpting is a bit more apparent. When employing handstripping and carding techniques, best results are achieved when done prior to the bath. Pads, sanitary, nail trimming and ear cleaning are all part of the prep work. Following the stripping, a thorough bath with a soothing shampoo, such as oatmeal, is desirable. Dry the coat to lay flat, following the coat growth direction. You can then make quick work of completing the groom by detailing. Fig.1) Secure the loose skin with one hand then card to remove the excess soft undercoat. The McClellan

yellow stripping knife (course), works well for this when used with a carding technique as shown. Card the neck, shoulders, forechest and down the front and sides of the forelegs. When using any stripping or carding techniques it is very important to secure the loose skin in order to avoid damaging the connective tissue. Fig.2) It may be necessary to also use stripping techniques as shown, to blend from the short coat to the longer coat. For this technique, secure the leg with one hand to support the leg and secure the skin, then grasp a small amount of the longer coat between your thumb and the knife then pull in the coat growth direction. Fig.3) After carding the flanks,


continue with a stripping technique to help shorten the body coat and blend into the longer side coat. Use care to avoid cutting the coat. Fig.4) Card the hips to form a ledge from the hip to point of rump. For a lot of coat removal use a course stripping knife, such as the yellow McClellan, then go over it with a Classic fine stripping knife, also using a carding technique. Fig.5) Card all the way down the outside of the leg to the foot including the inside of the rear pastern. Leave the furnishings on the rear of the upper thigh and the front of the upper thigh to the groin. Trim a straight line from the pastern to the foot. Fig.6) Use carding and stripping techniques to create a level topline. Card the croup, leaving whatever fill is necessary to make the tail an extension of the topline. Thinning shears may be used on the underside of the tail and to

blend the rectal area. Fig.7) Use thinning shears to create tight, compact feet void of fringe. Use thinning shears to blend the back of the foot into the longer furnishings. Fig.8) Lift the ear forward and grasp the muzzle. Then clip the underside of the ear. Fig.9) Flip the ear back then clip the ventilation strip in front of the ear. Fig.10) Clip the whiskers on the muzzle, clipping against the coat growth direction. Then reverse direction and lightly skim the sides of the cheeks back to the ear to blend into the ventilation strip. Fig.11) Card the throat and sides of the neck to remove excess undercoat. Fig.12) Clip the throat to an inch or so above the breastbone. A correct front will have a prominent forechest with hollows on either side of the breastbone. Card, strip or use thinning shears to blend this area. Use caution

so as not to clip the cowlicks that form on the sides of the neck or it may bald those areas. Follow the coat growth direction. Fig.13) Card the ear where it meets the skull for a smooth transition from skull to ear. Fig.14) Top thin to blend, going with the coat growth direction on the top of the ear with fine thinning shears. Fig.15) Blend the cowlicks on the sides of the throat with fine thinning shears. Blend the furnishings at the shoulder, elbow and sides of legs with fine thinning shears. Follow the natural undercarriage to create the underline using thinning shears or super blenders. Start with the longer coat that was left at the groin to make a subtle arch, descending gradually until you reach the front legs.
