GROOMING MATTERS by Daryl Conner
It might be hard to believe, but there are grooming practices that drum up quite a bit of controversy in our industry. What is common practice for some groomers might be considered to be reckless or dangerous practice by others.
S
ometimes arguments become quite heated on these topics. So, what is a caring groomer to do? In my opinion, they should take time to think. Thinking ahead about what your personal grooming philosophy is helps to set and promote a consistent standard of service and raises your level of professionalism. It never hurts to stop and re–examine how and why you do the things you do. Things change, new information becomes available, and (hopefully!) we as people grow and learn with time and experience. Ideally there is a trilogy of care

that consists of a cooperative relationship between the pet owner, the veterinarian and the groomer. These three parties should work together to support the best interests of the pet. This can get tricky, however. Here is an example: One day, two customers with standard poodles were waiting to talk to me about their pets grooming needs. The first said, “My veterinarian says I should ask you to make sure you pluck my dog's ears, because he keeps getting ear infections.” The second owner gasped and interjected, “MY veterinarian wants me to tell you to be sure to NOT pluck my dog's

ears, because he keeps getting ear infections!” This is the kind of no–win situation a groomer can find themselves in. Ear plucking is number one on my hit list of hot topics.
EAR PLUCKING When I was apprenticing to learn the grooming trade, my mentor taught me to remove every single hair from the ear canals of dogs that grow hair there. I vividly remember the disappointment on her face when she found a lonely strand in a schnauzer’s left ear. Fast forward a lot of years, and times have changed.

The International Society of Canine Cosmetologists has this to say on the subject, “Ear plucking may cause pathology. We only recommend plucking if the hair growth is excessive or there is an excessive buildup of ear wax. Normal ears with no clinical signs of infection should be left alone.” Many veterinarians agree, and modern groomers are doing far less plucking than we did back in the day. Perhaps the best way to know how to proceed is to ask several of the veterinarians in your area for their opinion or have pet owners ask their own veterinarians and make a note of their preference in your files. Current wisdom says that when we pluck, we are leaving the hair follicles open and fungus and bacteria can get a foothold, causing infection.

THE USE OF NON–PET PRODUCTS
“Groomers are an ever practical and
problem–solving bunch. When faced with an issue, we often approach it
from a, ‘well, what works?’ basis. This is creative and awesome, except when it isn’t, and has the potential to be less than awesome, like if someone threatens to sue you.” —Carol Visser

Another topic that gets people choosing sides and getting snippy with each other is using products on the dog or cat’s skin and coat that were not designed for pets. Carol Visser, long time grooming educator and journalist says, “Groomers are an ever practical and problem–solving bunch. When faced with an issue, we often approach it from a, ‘well, what works?’ basis. This is creative and awesome, except when it isn’t, and has the potential to be less than awesome, like if someone threatens to sue you.” Groomers have long since used products like degreasing dish soap to get oily coats extra clean, mouth wash to wipe down hard terrier coats, human hair sprays, mousses and setting gels to add texture and body where needed, and more. These products can deliver the desired results. The problem arises if the pet has an adverse reaction to a product used by the groomer. Having given that matter a lot of thought, I choose the following approach. If a veterinarian is to call and tell me he or she is seeing a dog I

groomed for a skin problem, and they ask me what products I used while grooming the pet, I want to be able to tell them that I used products designed, labeled and sold to be used on animals. It is my hope that the company who made the product will have my back in the event a problem occurs. But if they don’t, I am still going to feel better knowing I bought and used a product that was sold for use on pets. Give the subject a little consideration and see what you feel most comfortable with.
EXPRESSING ANAL SACS Here’s another topic that groomers become divisive about; expressing anal sacs. As a new groomer in the ‘80’s, I was taught to empty the sacs on every single dog. And I did
“I can’t thank you enough for having such a great product. I used to have such horrible hand fatigue and it would hurt for days. After about a week of getting used to them I no longer have hand fatigue, and learning how to use them was so easy. I will continue to order my shears from you in the future.”
— Dawn D.
as I was told for many years. I didn’t like it—and the dogs certainly didn’t either. The current information on this smelly subject is that manually expressing these delicate structures may cause damage to the pets in the long run. My current stance is that I don’t express unless specifically asked to by the owner, or in the rare instance that I notice the anal area is swollen. Even then, I use only the gentlest pressure, and if the sacs do not empty easily, I refer the pet to be seen by their veterinarian. Dr. Daniel Dowling, (Camden Hospital for Animals, Camden, ME) says, “Groomers should express anal sacs close to never. Once you start doing it, there are often more troubles than if you let it go.”
Unparalleled Performance
OTHER HOT TOPICS Some other hot topics in our industry include the use of heated cage dryers, administering oral or spot–on flea and tick products to dogs in our care, cleaning pets' teeth, and even dematting severely tangled pets. These are all excellent topics for each pet grooming professional to take into consideration and take a stand on how they choose to care for the animals entrusted to their care and why. If you are having trouble deciding what is best, ask your own veterinarian for their opinion, talk to other groomers and do some research on the subjects that you are confused about. It’s never too late to learn, grow and change—and I believe we owe that to the pets we groom. ✂

TIME
MANAGEMENT:
E by Kathy Hosler e
Why is it that some people can accomplish a tremendous amount daily, while others don’t have much to show for their efforts? We each have the same 24 hours, why are some groomers so much more productive than others? 12

ften it’s because they practice time management. Time is a precious, non– renewable resource. These successful, high–achievers have trained themselves to manage and to use it wisely. Here are some tips that can help you make every minute count: 1. Get organized. This alone can save you an enormous amount of time and help you control every aspect of your business day for maximum efficiency. 2. Your client files. You should be able to pull up a client’s record with all their pet(s) information within seconds of answering their phone call. Then you can immediately see what kind of pet it is, the type of haircut it gets, when it was in last, and more. 3. Your schedule. You want your workday to be consistent, and run as smoothly as possible. Don’t be overbooked one day and slow another. Strive to get your clients to pre–book their grooming appointments and keep their pets on a recurring schedule. 4. Your supplies and tools. Do you waste time searching for tools that you use frequently? It is important to keep all your essential tools within easy reach. 5. Organize your grooming process (That is a big one.) If you groom every pet step–by–step, in the same order, you will streamline the process and save time. And, if you are interrupted by a client or a phone call, it is easy to pick up where you left off. 6. Are you a multi–tasker? Trying to complete several tasks at the same time is not always to your advantage. Sometimes you can be much more productive when you stay focused and place all your attention on the task at

hand. Distractions can rob you of precious time. Although there are always unexpected interruptions, if you keep on track you can stay in control of your time. 7. L earn to say no. You don’t have to do everything yourself. Choose the tasks that are most important to you and delegate some to others. For example, think about hiring a cleaning or lawn service for your salon or your home to lighten your load. 8. Do more by doing less. Some stylists have increased their productivity by eliminating time–consuming, uncooperative, and big dogs from their schedules. They find that they can do several smaller pets in less time, and it’s easier on their bodies. 9. Be proactive, not reactive. Don’t allow texts, emails, and phone messages overwhelm you. Answer the important ones as soon as possible, and get to the others at the end of your workday. To help you make the most of small windows of time, follow the ‘two–minute rule’. What is the two– minute rule? Entrepreneur Steve Olenski explains, “If you see a task or action that you know can be done in two minutes or less, do it immediately.” He says, “Completing the task right away takes less time than going back to do it at a later time.”

ALLERGIES

ack when I was a teenager, I could never wear makeup. Every time I applied it, my face would break out in a rash. Not a good look when you’re 15 and sensitive about your appearance. Hypoallergenic makeup had just made its debut and even that would cause a problem. Fast forward a couple of years, and sometimes a cleaning product, shampoo or fast food item I had eaten many times before causes rashes, broken skin and itching. Or I smell a gallon of shampoo and sneeze for the next half hour. Never any continuity to it. Sometimes a reaction, sometimes not. My doctors feel it’s probably the preservative, dye or a fragrance, or any combination of the three the

WHAT IS AN ALLERGY? An allergy is when the body’s immune system views a substance as harmful and overreacts to it. Your basic drama queen. It sets your immune system into overdrive. The substances that cause the reaction are called allergens. In response to

the foreign invader (from a body’s perspective), the immune system makes an antibody called immunoglobulin E. The job of this antibody is to attack and neutralize the allergen. The symptoms that result from this process are called allergic reactions or responses.
WHAT ARE ALLERGIC RESPONSES? Symptoms can range widely. Mild reactions can run the gamut from feeling mildly uncomfortable, to running
Any of the products that we use or come in contact with on a day to day basis, as groomers, including shampoos, conditioners, spa products, diffused essential and fragrance oils, cleaners, clients overdoing perfume and so forth can be problematic.
eyes and nose, to sneezing, to rashes and hives, to discolored skin, to headaches, as well as in any combination of the above. More severe reactions can include difficultly breathing and/or swelling in mouth and throat areas. In addition, more serious reactions can result in life threatening conditions. And in some cases, the allergen is mildly reactive in the beginning, but over time can become life threatening.
HOW DO ALLERGENS MAKE CONTACT? 1. Inhalation: The allergen is released into the air. It may include diffusers, products applied to other people or something as simple as opening up a gallon of shampoo. 2. Ingestion: The allergen is ingested into the body. This is usually food based. 3. Absorption: The allergen makes physical contact with skin and is absorbed. 4. Injection: The allergen is injected into the body. This is usually in the form of insect, spider or bee stings. “I had issues with fragrances. Some just get me itchy, some get me sniffly, some give me a migraine, but others are really bad. I didn’t know I was so allergic to the citrus oils until my bather was washing a dog and turned around and freaked out. I could feel my face was irritated, but it was bad. Had hives on my face for four days, just being in the vicinity of the bath.” —Liz Tunstall
WHAT TYPES OF PRODUCTS CAN BE PROBLEMATIC FOR GROOMERS? Any of the products that we use or come in contact with on a day to day basis, as groomers, including shampoos, conditioners, spa products, diffused essential and fragrance oils, cleaners, clients overdoing perfume and so forth can be problematic.

As many shampoos use coconut derived shampoo base, it can be problematic for those with coconut allergies. In addition, some hypoallergenic products contain fragrances and dyes. HOW CAN YOU PREVENT ALLERGIC REACTIONS? The best way to prevent allergic reactions is to simply avoid the offending substance, but that relies on knowing what the allergen is and if it is listed on the ingredient label. However, that is not always an easy or reasonable option. As labeling is not regulated in the pet industry, we are subject to the honesty of the manufacturer as well. It’s generally a smaller population of people that have a problem with a particular sub-
stance, so it most likely will not be listed on the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) that is required on all products. As an example, my father was deathly allergic to strawberries. Any product containing strawberries would not list strawberries as a hazard on the SDS because so few people have that particular allergy. Yet, he needed to know that. Peanut allergies are far more common and manufacturers need to note on all products if it was made in a facility that even processes nuts.
HOW ABOUT USING HYPOALLERGENIC PRODUCTS? Providing it isn’t the preservative or shampoo base that contains an ingredient that is problematic for you, hypoallergenic products may work. As many shampoos use coconut derived shampoo base, it can be problematic for those with coconut allergies. In addition, some hypoallergenic products contain fragrances and dyes.
BUT I NEED TO WORK! I CAN’T AVOID MY ALLERGENS! If you absolutely cannot avoid the allergens that affect you, then this is a conversation you need to have with a medical practitioner of your choice to discuss desensitization, antihistamines, corticosteroids or epinephrine pens.

If you have a known, life–threatening allergy, then a plan of action should be discussed with your co— workers, employers and employees. They need to be prepared. If you work by yourself with a known, life–threatening allergy, have a medical alert call button and wear a medic alert bracelet. Or call 911. They have trained staff to walk you through an emergency situation or dispatch help. Fortunately for me, avoiding those products that have caused a reaction is a reasonable option as they have never been life–threatening. But not everyone is so lucky. Being aware of the products you use and the possible effects is key to preventing allergic reactions. ✂

FELINE HYPERTHYROIDISM: THE
E by Deborah Hansen e
I will be the first to admit that I thought my clients were being neurotic or the vets in my area were over diagnosing hyperthyroidism. Almost every cat I groom seems to have a hyperthyroidism diagnosis.
W
hen I began researching hyperthyroidism, I was shocked to learn that it is a valid disease and seems to be a result of the environment. Research shows that a substance developed to keep humans safe is actually harming our feline companions.
WHAT ARE THE FACTS? The first cases of Feline Hyperthyroidism (FHT) were written about in 1979. In the early 1980s, FHT was treated by a specialist. Unfortunately, FHT is so common that today general practitioners treat FHT. It is estimated that over 10% of household cats over the age of 10 have FHT. In my grooming business, I am noticing a trend of younger cats
30
developing the disease. Research supports that in the 1980’s FHT was a new disease, as compared to an undiagnosed disease. The questions then became why and how are household cats getting FHT? We know FHT is a house cat disease, as feral colonies are not presenting FHT when blood samples are taken. It is suspected and research is supporting that the chemical polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) that is added to household furnishings, electronics and vehicles to prevent fires is the cause of the elevated occurrence of FHT. We are led to this belief for several reasons. FHT was unheard of in the 50’s and 60’s before PBDE was commonly used. As PBDE became the standard fire retar-

dant used in consumer products the occurrence of FHT started showing up in cats. The FHT cases increased as the use of PBDE increased. The problem comes because PBDE does not form a chemical bond to the surfaces it is applied. This lack of bonding allows the chemical to easily “flake off”. The results are a twofold dilemma for our feline friends. First, when the chemical “flakes off” it floats around our home environments as dust particles. The dust particles either land on the coat or are stuck to the coat through normal feline activities such as lying under the TV, racing across furniture, rolling on the carpet, etc. When the felines lick their coats, PBDE is ingested. A home with FHT cats has PBDE levels up to 180

times a home without FHT cats. Second, cats are exposed to the fire retardant chemical when they are kneading or scratching. Before 2004, PBDE was commonly applied to carpets, upholstery, bedding, and curtains. All the places cats love to mark or readjust with their claws had the chemical that literally was just sitting on the fibers of their favorite places. When a cat makes a new cozy spot to lie, scratches the carpet or races behind curtains, PBDE is released and settles into the feline coat. Later the feline will lick the PBDE off and it will build up in its body. To make matters worse, PBDE is now also found in fish flavored cat food! Come to find out PBDE is naturally occurring in marine animals. We already know that predatory fish at the top of the food chain contain high levels of toxins such as mercury and pesticides. They also contain high levels of PBDE. Tilefish is the fish in cat food labeled as “ocean whitefish.” Tilefish, along with king mackerel, shark and swordfish are currently the most contaminated fish in our oceans.

The physical symptoms include weight loss—despite a normal or increased appetite, increased urination, increased drinking, not using the litter box, increased vocalization, restlessness, vomiting, diarrhea and poor coat. The official diagnosis of FHT comes from a blood test indicating an elevated thyroid hormone concentration (T4 or T4 plus FT4ED) with one or more of the physical signs. While grooming these cats, I have noticed they tend to lick their lips excessively.

About half my current grooming clients have had success with this method. Studies show that more than 81% of patients have success with this method. The problem comes if the cat is taken off the diet, given treats or has access to another food source. for the medication to be administered once or twice a day. A third method is radioactive iodine. Many of my clients opt for this treatment. Studies show it cures over 95% of the cases of FHT, with a 5% relapse rate. There is a hospitalization period of 3+ days where the owner is not permitted to visit the cat due to radiation levels. Then the cat’s waste needs to be collected and the owner cannot cuddle for 2 weeks after discharge. 1/5/18

An option my clients do not seem to use is surgical thyroidectomy. Interestingly enough, the current projections show that over the lifetime of the feline, it does not matter if the owner selects diet, medication or radioactive iodine, the costs of the treatment seem to be equal at this point in time. The only difference is if the client chooses to endure the costs upfront (radioactive iodine) or over the life of the feline (diet and medication).

My business model does not provide any kind of treats or food to the cats we groom. If your business does, a cat being treated by diet should only have vet approved items. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR GROOMERS? My business will not groom a radiation iodine treated cat for a month after treatment, and then only with vet approval. The studies show that the radiation leaves the body through waste within two to four weeks of treatment. My business is based on lap grooming, which leads me to have two concerns regarding a feline immediately following radioactive iodine treatment. First, potential radiation lying over my reproductive organs for up to two hours. Second, having the felines’
waste on my body which may still contain residual radiation. If transdermal medication is given in the ear, I do not clean the ears. My business model does not provide any kind of treats or food to the cats we groom. If your business does, a cat being treated by diet should only have vet approved items. In conclusion, felines with FHT can live a long and normal life once the FHT is controlled or eliminated. Untreated FHT can lead to death. Few adjustments need to be made to your regular grooming routine for a cat with FHT. ✂

verypet Grooming Salon is a popular salon in a mid– size town. When the owners of Everypet found themselves overbooked and understaffed, they placed an advertisement for a new groomer. Evelyn interviewed for the job and was hired. She began work at Everypet and in no time at all had a few regular clients and a busy schedule. Evelyn offered much needed help in the overworked salon and her co–workers were happy to have her aboard. Evelyn and her fellow staff members began to form friendships. and reliability to develop trust and a relationship with their pet stylist. Meeting a new stylist can be stressful for many pet owners. While they may trust your facility, they are seeking continuity in their experience. The quality of the service a client receives may be diminished due to turn overs in staffing. Each time a pet stylist grooms a pet, they become more familiar with the nuances of the pet’s behavior and coat. That information is lost and the process begins anew when a pet is introduced to a new stylist. Lastly, from the customer’s perspective, their availability to be seen by you or your salon may be negatively impacted if employee turn over causes you to become back logged, overbooked or able to service fewer clients than normal. We’ve looked at the consequences your clients may experience due to staffing changes, but what about their pets? The hidden costs to pets include loss of continuity and trust. Just like their owners, pets enjoy routine and can build lasting relationships with their grooming providers. Changes in staffing can increase pet stress; cause the pet’s tolerance of the grooming process to deteriorate; and in the case of naturally anxious or reactive pets, increase the likelihood of a negative response during grooming. Pets who are more likely to misbehave may find themselves at greater risk of injury. Having continuity in the pet’s care team also increases the chances that a regular groomer will notate changes in skin, help monitor chronic health issues and provide a second set of eyes to busy owners. Lastly, changeover in staffing requires that there are training periods where new staff learns the expectations of their new salon. Pets may experience undertrained or less experienced service providers during these transition periods. Another hidden cost of staffing
change comes at the expense of your co–workers and existing staff. Employees experience the loss of a co–worker on a personal level. They may feel grief, betrayal, or a general sense of loss when someone they worked closely with moves on. In the wake of the loss of a co–worker, remaining employees may feel overworked or burdened when trying to absorb clients. And when new staff does arrive, during the inevitable transition period, the burden shifts to helping the new groomer learn the ropes, often leading to additional stress on the overburdened existing staff. The cycle perpetuates and employees who remain through it can experience burn–out. Every business owner can lament the hidden (and not so hidden) costs of employee turnover. If you tally the time and costs associated with finding,

hiring, training and administrating, each employee has a numerical value to their employer. These costs are simply not recoverable on a lost employee. Other hidden losses include any education or training the employee may have gained at the expense of their employer, and even valuable experience gained on the job. These are not always definable or replaceable in new hires. Another impact which may be felt on a business level is reputation. Although groomers often develop individual relationships with their clients, the salon may be seen in a negative light by clients if they experience a new face at every visit. Few people think about how the revolving door may affect the employee him or herself. The transient employee suffers hidden effects as
well. While the employee may find another job, each change comes with a degree of displacement which leads to a loss of financial stability, increased personal stress, and loss of peers and friendships. The displaced employee loses the ability to form deep, lasting relationships with both clients and their pets. True happiness as a groomer is being fortunate enough to groom pets from puppyhood into their senior years and to know families through generations of their pets. The culture of the entire grooming industry suffers when a revolving door attitude persists. From reputation (who hasn’t heard someone say “groomers are flighty”?) to professionalism, learning to work together for the good of the clients and their pets will ensure that generations of pets and their owners enjoy safe, lasting, enduring relationships with the pet groomers. Dependability and reliability are a cornerstone for being a provider that your clients can trust. Employees are the best investment a company can make on behalf of their clients. Conflict resolution, transparency and communication are keys to avoiding these losses and providing stability for your clients. Working to reduce turnover and close the revolving door for good will help the entire pet service industry—one groomer at a time! ✂

Fig 2) Then using foil to act as a barrier, I folded my foil against her skin and applied more dye so the hair was well saturated and then folded it over on the hair. This process was repeated until I reached the topknot area just over the tops of the ears. Next I brushed in dye from the roots out along the foil barrier I had created so that I could then make quick work of filling in the rest of the mane with dye. I did this by brushing it all in the direction of the foil, using it as a barrier and guideline. You may want to foil the second side and then fill in if you are more comfortable with that method. Then in small sections at a time, I brushed in the dye until her topknot was completely saturated, taking care not to get too close to the eyes. Her face was not shaved during the dying process in case there were any ‘oopsies’ that could be easily fixed by shaving that hair away. Her tail was then dyed the same

Basic skin care for pets should include a shampoo that cleanses well without stripping all the oils off of the coat and a conditioner that replaces the oil that was washed away. WHY IT IS NECESSARY TO MAINTAIN THE SKIN? The skin cell growth cycle is an average of 28 days from the basal layer to the event of the cell flaking off. This three–week cycle is the perfect interval for grooming. I advise my clients to schedule their appointment every four weeks so that gives them “a cycle and week”. There are many variations of the grooming cycle, and a lot depends on the type of coat you are maintaining and the products you enjoy. I prefer a four–week cycle as I feel that keeps them clean enough to sleep on the bed and the appointments are far enough apart to let the skin produce natural oils. There are even some pets that get bathed weekly. This is subjective and
my personal preference, but absolutely discuss this with your client and do what works best for the pet and the both of you, in terms of work necessary to do the job and the financial restrictions of the client.
BASIC SKIN CARE Basic skin care for pets should include a shampoo that cleanses well without stripping all the oils off of the coat and a conditioner that replaces the oil that was washed away. I will even be so bold as to say that a nice finishing spray should be used to polish the cuticles closed and some type of oil and mineral mixture rubbed into the feet, wrinkles and flews. Crusty noses are a sign that perhaps a dental should be recommended, as the bacteria from the mouth is constantly

DO’S AND DONT'S Do dampen the coat before any pre–brushing. This helps the hair strands become a little less brittle and can prevent breakage. Do use conditioner or some type of light conditioning rinse. This helps coat the skin with an oil covering after the shock of being stripped by the shampoo. This will also allow the pet to smell cleaner for a longer period of time. Don’t shave the sanitary area before the bath. This creates micro abrasions in the delicate skin which is then irritated by the surfactants in the shampoo resulting in “clipper burn”. Many cases of clipper burn are the result of surfactant irritation rather than a hot blade. (Make sure your blades aren’t hot—but don’t test them on your face! Different story for a different day…)

SALON: IS IT SAFE? Hello Michell. I am finally opening my own dog grooming salon. I am so excited! I am very strongly leaning toward a cage–free salon. There are many reasons for my decision; cages are expensive, the owners don’t like to have their dogs in cages, dogs don’t like being in cages and it brings me joy to watch them run around and play with each other. I know this is a controversial subject. I wonder if you have any advice? Thank you. –KAREN

i Karen. Congratulations on becoming a salon owner! It is your job, and yours alone, to assume the risks of your new grooming salon. You need to ask yourself several questions about the risks involved with a cage–free salon. In the end, it is up to you. First and foremost, the client expects to get a well–groomed, happy and healthy pet back from you in a few hours. Safety is the

number one thing that owners want from you, even if they don’t know it. They can’t even imagine the possible risks, and they should not have to. It is your job to make sure they never have a nightmare come true. The dogs are only in your care for a few hours per month. Simply focus on providing the service that the client expects—grooming. Consider that your job is not to provide their pet enrichment,

investment. In many cases a start– up salon does not need very many cages. Maybe you can start with a few used airline crates and buy something nicer after you have saved some money. Groomers get hurt tripping over dogs and breaking up dog fights. Dogs get hurt by getting into dog fights, getting tripped over and having tools dropped on them. Keep in mind that you need enough savings to cover vet bills and to cover the void in the salon’s income due to an employee out on worker’s compensation leave. These outflows and voids come long before any insurance compensation. Your liability and worker’s compensation premiums might go up after a claim. Cage–free and barrier–free are two different things. Many salons use exercise pens, play pens, baby gates and rooms to separate dogs. These are good options if you have a lot of square footage. Keep in mind that square footage will be more expensive than cages. If the dogs are safely away from the work zone and separate from other strange dogs, you are still providing a safe environment for the dogs. If you have a few dogs in your clientele who have cage phobia and simply cannot be caged, set up an ex-

If you have a few dogs in your clientele who have cage phobia and simply cannot be caged, set up an express groom for that dog so that he/she does not need to be caged at all. press groom for that dog so that he/ she does not need to be caged at all. Most groomers do not take the time to understand—much less install—pack structure. They don’t know how strong the pack instincts are in their clients’ pets. These drives can click into high gear when a dog is taken into an area with strange dogs. When a new dog comes into an area that another dog claims, the new dog is often seen as an intruder into “their personal territory”, rather than a new–found friend. This often leads to either territorial aggression, dominance aggression or fear aggression. The issue of rank may have already been settled by the current
pack and the game may be going according to their rules. The new dog will not know the rules and can easily get into trouble. In a busy grooming workspace there is no time to monitor these behaviors. With every single decision you make in your new salon, there should be a risk assessment. You will do yourself, your clients, your clients’ dogs, your employees and your business a favor if you always choose the safest route. Good luck! ✂ Have a question you want Michell to answer? AKC SALON SAFE
CERTIFICATION PROGRAM “Should groomers be licensed?” is one of the most highly debated questions in the grooming industry at this time. Most groomers believe that there should be some way of separating them from a person who simply reads a book, watches a YouTube video or two and thinks they can be a groomer.
R
equired state licensing would solve that problem but would create a whole new set of problems that involve government bureaucracy and interference. The AKC S.A.F.E Salon Certification Program is an attempt to bridge that gap. The first step in becoming AKC S.A.F.E Salon Certified is to take the course either at a show or online.

“The A.K.C. S.A.F.E. Groomer and Salon program covers a number of issues,” states Susan Sholar. “One of the first and utmost of importance is, humane handling of animals while at the same time keeping the groomer safe. Sometimes we all have un–socialized dogs enter our salon and they take a different touch and a lot of patience. Those are also the

ones that make us appreciate the well socialized dogs we also see in our salons. Groomer safety is just as important, therefore, we cover how to avoid injuries and sometimes just downright dangerous situations.” Sholar goes on to state, “Salon safety for all who work and patronize the salon are another consideration when reviewing how to make your

Health issues can be present with any animal that comes in for grooming. If it is a health issue that you need to use special products on, how would you best handle the grooming in a manner that would not exacerbate the problem at hand or is it a health issue that should be referred to the veterinarian before you can accept the pet into your salon?” The class covers diseases that are communicable among the pets in your salon; as well as, zoonotic diseases. Zoonotic diseases being those diseases that can transfer to other species. “Know what your county or state requires of your grooming salon,” Sholar advises. “Regulations can vary from state to state, even city to city. Therefore, the course gives a number of issues you should be aware of and what government departments you will need to work with to obtain those regulations and ensure you are in compliance. We also do not want to ignore the regulations of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA is a federal administration that has regulations to avoid injuries or death in the workplace.” What is a disaster plan? Why do you need a disaster plan & how do you develop a disaster plan for your salon? “This course is directed to Groomers and Salon owners; how-

ever, we recommend it to anyone within a salon that will be handling animals as well or making the decision about if an animal is one that the salon can accept based on temperament or health issues. These employees could be bathers or receptionist?” describes Sholar. “Our goal is to avoid being the groomer on the 6:00 p.m. news due to an avoidable injury to a pet and the pet injured is the name of the next animal legislation you may see in your state. Most groomers are extremely dedicated to their profession and the pets in their care. Groomers become attached to many of these pets and establish wonderful relationships with the pet’s owner. We hope to help the groomer maintain all of this with the AKC S.A.F.E. Certification Course,” Sholar concludes. After speaking with Susan Sholar we wanted to gather more first–hand information and experience from an AKC S.A.F.E Certified salon owner so we spoke to Jacki Panzik. Panzik was asked what the benefits of the Certification are as a groomer and she responded with, “There are many. The program gives our staff a guideline to follow for pet safety. They are more conscious of the fact that pets must be well taken care of and that safety is always our priority. Following the AKC guidelines has raised the level of safety and sanitation in our salons. It helps to create a culture of pride among our staff for standing
out in our community as a reputable organization.” Jackie also stated that the certification program is also a huge benefit to clients and their piece of mind. “We proudly hang our AKC S.A.F.E. Salon Certificate and point it out to new customers as well as regular customers. They are impressed by it as pretty much everyone recognizes the AKC as an authority when it comes to the care of the canine.” The AKC S.A.F.E Salon Certification Program has been a huge success so far and we are excited to spread the benefits and joy to other groomers and clients. Take a look at some of the rave reviews the program has already received: "Should be mandatory for all groomers! Well done.” "Everything before the exam was very easy to follow. I really enjoyed learning more and feeling confident in the process." “Very in–depth. Great examples. Insanely knowledgeable.” "Very user friendly and informative. This should be the standard for all groomers.” “Wide coverage of safety risks. I liked the parts about diseases and how to deal with them. So much information. I love the handout so I could listen easier. Lots of great info in small amount of time.” Grooming professionals who successfully complete the AKC Safety in the Salon course and pass the associated test are eligible to become AKC S.A.F.E. Groomers and Salons. At the center of the AKC S.A.F.E Grooming program is the Groomer/Salon Oath. Groomers and salon owners certify to follow the oath, which showcases their commitment to holding pet safety in the highest regard. Participants must submit an application demonstrating their grooming experience and pledge to safety. AKC
S.A.F.E. Groomers and Salons receive a frameable certificate to display in their business, a complimentary one–year AKC GroomerFinder profile listing, and other valuable marketing materials from the AKC. Contact AKC Groomer Education at groomer@akc. org to learn more. ✂
