HOW TO BECOME

“People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.” —Maya Angelou

re you the best groomer in the world? According to my clients, I am. And it’s not because I have a wall full of trophies and awards (I don’t), it’s because of how I treat them and the way I take care of and interact with their pets. Having great grooming skills
is important, but that is only the beginning. You need great people skills, too. Almost without exception, people ultimately choose to do business with people whom they like. Okay, so how do you become one of the world’s best? It doesn’t happen overnight. Building your business

one great client at a time is the key. For most people, their first contact with you is a phone call. How you answer your phone is very important. If you have a salon full of barking dogs, and not a minute to spare, let the call go to voicemail. Have your message say that you are

busy caring for clients and that you will return their call as soon as possible. When you call them back, take time to explain your services to the potential client and answer any of their questions. If you determine they are a good fit for you, set up an appointment. People form an immediate opinion of you (good or bad) as soon as they see your salon or mobile van. Is the area outside your salon clean and free of pet waste? When someone steps inside, does it smell like wet dog or urine, or does it smell fresh and is everything clean and tidy? First impressions are something that are not easily changed. How about you? Do you greet your clients in clean, professional clothing—or are you more likely to wear a worn out t–shirt and old, stained jeans? How would you feel if your doctor, dentist or hairdresser greeted you in ratty clothes? If you expect to be paid like a professional, you have to look and act like a professional! No matter what is going on in the rest of your life, when that client and pet come for their appointment, your entire focus should be on them. Put a smile on your face and greet them warmly. Show a genuine interest in them. You want them to feel like they are your most important pet client. How you treat the owner and their pet has a direct bearing on the trust they place in you. And, when they trust you and have confidence in your skills, they are at ease leaving their pet with you. Never stop learning. No matter how many years you have been grooming, there is always something new to learn. Innovative equipment and time–saving tools

and products are being introduced everyday. Make it a priority to attend as many trade shows, grooming competitions and seminars as you can. Let your clients know that you go to these functions to learn the newest techniques to better serve them and their pets. Assure them that you use premium products on their pets. (How would you like it if your hairdresser used dish soap to shampoo your hair?) Create a website and use social media to advertise your business. Post photos of your grooms (with the owner’s permission, of course), and share your accomplishments, like the seminars you attend or any awards you receive. Cultivating a loyal client is far more profitable than looking for new ones. Say you have a client that brings their dog to you every four weeks. that you sell at retail to the owners. Sending a birthday or get well card to the pets I groom is always a huge hit with my clientele. In addition, when someone’s pet dies, you should acknowledge their loss with a phone call, card or sympathy gift. They will always remember your kindness and that you shared in their loss. And, as we all know, most of them will get another pet, and of course they will want you to groom it. Loyalty like that is priceless. GROOMING MATTERS by Daryl Conner
In a book I used to read to my wee daughter was a fox pup named Sammy who had difficulty getting to sleep. He asked his mama for a night light, for a bedtime story, for a glass of water. At one point he called to his patient mother, “My tail is being troublesome!”
T
he illustration showed a darling little fox tucked into bed, with his tail waving wildly outside the covers. It seems that, to some groomers, tails are indeed troublesome. But they don’t need to be. Tails can be docked or natural. And to make matters more complicated, they can either be docked correctly so that they nicely balance the dog, or too long or short, creating challenges for groomers. Let’s look at the com-

mon types of tails we encounter in both pure and mixed breed dogs.
POODLE–TYPE TAILS Most traditional poodle styles include a shaved band on the base of the tail, and then a full pom–pom is scissored with the remaining hair. Many groomers find placing the shaved band to be a challenge. Here is a wonderful tip for where to set the band: Lower the tail so it is lying flat down against the body.
GroomertoGroomer.com
Holding your comb horizontally, place the spine of the comb so it lies at the lower edge of the dog’s anus. Where the spine of the comb touches the lowered tail is approximately where you set the clipper line of the band, and then work it up towards the base of the tail where it joins the body. This results in a much smaller band than many groomers are used to. This narrower band will help you shape a proper pom–pom and make the groom look far more harmonious
with the overall body shape than if you leave a wider band. If the band is too wide, you end up with the dreaded “palm tree” tail; a large shaved space topped by a funny little fringe. If you find you have been leaving your bands too long, merely tell the pets’ owners you are going to update the style and it will take a few grooms to get it where it should be. Then you can set the band properly, shorten the hair on the pom–pom quite a bit and let the tail hair grow in. You will be pleasantly surprised at how changing the band placement can update the look of the overall finished style. If the poodle’s tail has been left undocked or the dock is long, your pom–pom will be oblong. But it can still look nice and balanced. If the tail has been docked too short, it
can be a real challenge to shave any sort of band at all. On some tightly cropped tails I have resorted to using scissors to trim just the suggestion of an indentation rather than shaving a band, then let the tail hair grow a bit so I can scissor a soft puff that resembles a pom–pom.
PLUME TAILS Many mixed breeds as well as pure bred dogs such as Shih Tzu, Bichons and lots more have plumed tails that arch up over the back and boast long hair that drapes beautifully, if properly cared for. In the pet breeds, most groomers see these tails often quite matted. But due to the slightly coarser texture of the tail hair, they usually can be dematted so that enough coat is saved to create a pleasing appearance.
If the band is too wide, you end up with the dreaded “palm tree” tail; a large shaved space topped by a funny little fringe.

The rule of thumb is that two–thirds of the tail, starting at the base, is trimmed closely, with a longer plume of hair left at the end.
In dogs prone to matting, I always use a dematting tool to remove as much dead coat as possible. This helps reducing matting in the weeks between grooming visits. Using a high–quality conditioner and dematting spray helps a lot on these tails. Once any tangles are removed, comb all the hair so it hangs evenly. Then, slide your hand from the base of the tail towards the tip. Protecting the bone tip with your hand, use curved shears or chunkers to remove excess length and dead ends, shaping an attractive and neat line. Next, comb the tail again and hold it up in its natural position and use thinners or chunkers to tidy up any straggling hairs to create a lovely and natural look.
LION TAILS Portuguese Water Dogs and the
more unusual Löwchen sport lion tails, but this style can also be great on many mixed breeds that carry their tails up over their backs. The rule of thumb is that two–thirds of the tail, starting at the base, is trimmed closely, with a longer plume of hair left at the end. If you arch the tail over the dog's back, the spot where the tail begins to bend is approximately where the plume should begin. Hairless Chinese Crested have a similar tail, but two–thirds of the tail is plume and one–third is naturally bare or clipped closely.
FLAG TAILS Setters and spaniels that are un– docked have tails referred to as flag tails. Often there is a suggestion of shorter hair at the base, the topcoat blending with the length of hair on

the animal’s rump, and the underside of the tail shorter for an inch or so to keep things tidy. After that little gap, the hair is longest close to the rump and shorter at the tip. An easy way to make a flag tail tidy is to brush and comb all the hair smooth, then wrap your fingers around the base of the tail and slide your hand to the tip, gathering up the hair. Use curved shears, chunkers or thinners to trim the desired amount off, then re–comb so the hair lies naturally and tidy up any straggly bits.
CARROT TAILS Look at a photo of a beautifully groomed Scottish or West Highland White Terrier and you will see good examples of how a carrot tail should look. Normally the underside is
stripped, clipped or scissored close to the skin, and the sides and top are balanced to blend with the body coat, leaving the tail to appear as a smooth continuation of the body. The tail will appear to be wider at the base, tapering tighter towards the tip to follow the structure of the bone. Some groomers leave flags or even (gasp!) pom–poms on terrier tails, ruining the look of an otherwise proper pattern. If you have any doubts as to how a certain breed’s tail should appear, scan your favorite grooming guide or look that breed up somewhere like on the American Kennel Club website, where you can find a good written description of how each part of that breed should look, as well as excellent photographs.
As with all grooming, excellent prep work is key to achieving good results in your finished tails, as well. Don’t be like Sammy the fox pup, having trouble with tails. Do a little homework and send the pets you groom home wagging well–groomed tails behind them. ✂

CLEAN CAT GROOMING:

While attending a cat show, the first thing many newcomers observe is how often surfaces are sprayed and wiped down. At the show ring, everything is sprayed and wiped down after each cat.

he judges not only spray down their hands, but also the judging platform and anything else the cat may have had contact with during the judging process. Ring attendants quickly wipe out each holding cage as the cats leave the judging area. Why is such caution taken during judging? This surely is not the case in the dog world. While each sponsoring club follows the same basic procedure of wiping everything down after each cat, the reasoning behind it probably will surprise you. The parent organization willingly admits it is not to disinfect, as the sprayed–on products do not stay on the surfaces long enough to kill
viruses, instead it is meant to mask the smell of other felines to prevent behavioral issues. As groomers, it is just as important that we take the knowledge gained by those who have gone before us. Remember, felines have a much more sensitive sense of smell than canines. Wiping down surfaces and tools between each cat, removing the previous cat’s or dog’s scent, will help promote harmony in your grooming environment during the cat grooming process. As a business, it is even more important that we prevent cross–contamination in our cat grooming area. More than removing or masking the scent of a previous cat or dog, it is

important to properly disinfect our tools, holding areas and work spaces. It only takes a few minutes a day to ensure we do not spread viruses that can cause illness among your cat clients, harm your reputation as a groomer and hurt your bottom line. Sanitizing the tools and equipment you use daily can easily become part of your closing routine. After removing the hair from your equipment, place your combs, nail clippers, clipper attachments, blades and anything else that can get wet into an ultrasonic cleaner. Adding veterinarian/kennel– strength disinfectant to the water in the ultrasonic cleaner will provide an additional layer of preven-

tion from cross–contamination. While the ultrasonic cleaner is running, wipe down clippers and anything else that cannot be submerged with your favorite cleaner. Keep in mind, many products need to sit on surfaces before they are wiped off to be effective. Be sure to read and follow the directions on each product you use for full effectiveness. After the tools are removed from the ultrasonic cleaner and dried, place everything into an ultraviolet cleaner for the night.
While this process may seem to be adding extra work to your daily procedures, cycling everything through this cleaning process can easily be done while waiting for clients to pick up their pets or when returning client messages. sanitation is better than having no sanitation procedures in place. Never forget, the smallest steps go a long way in forming positive habits. When choosing an ultrasonic cleaner, it is important to select one that has an optional heat setting. If you are using the ultrasonic cleaner for any length of time, the cleaning solution can become very hot. It is good to be able to turn off the heating option during long cleaning periods. SALON SPOTLIGHT:

New York City’s oldest dog grooming salon and emporium is thriving with three locations in Manhattan. Billing itself a “Lifestyle Brand for dogs,” owner Mark Drendel credits the longevity of Canine Styles as a mix of grooming, high quality retail, customer service and location, location, location.

he flagship store is in Midtown Manhattan at Lexington and 63rd Street. “Lexington Avenue is where the Upper East Side shops. I know my customers. I know what they wear and where they shop.” Mark isn’t a groomer but a retailer. He got his start in the pet industry at Canine Styles in the late ‘80’s as a salesperson. According to
him, there was one full–time groomer and one part–time groomer and about 200 square feet for retail. “After three or four months, I’d fallen in love with the store and heard the original owner wanted to sell. I told her I was interested, but I was very poor. She told me if I could come up with 10%, she’d hold the note for seven years. So, I got cash advances on all my credit cards.”

Fast forward nearly 30 years, and Canine Styles has three locations in Manhattan. The original store has doubled in size. “We have the best groomers in NYC. My groomers have been with me for 12–20 years. Even my bathers and fluffers have been with me that long. We usually hire and train from within.” Canine Styles has a loyal following with many of their customers

Canine Styles also offers “Concierge Home Grooming” where a Master Groomer will go to a client’s home. But most customers still choose to come into the salon. Mark explains, “NYC apartments are small and most people don’t want their pet to be groomed in their kitchen.” Unlike some other salons, they use no sedatives or cage drying and all grooming is always in full view. Canine Styles also offers a service guarantee that every pet will be treated as one of their own. On the retail side, Mark designs a high–end pet collection that’s unveiled in late summer. “I owned the first store for 7–10 years and realized there was a need for a higher–end product so I started

designing our own line of products. Our coats, our sweaters, most of our bedding, we have a signature plaid, all of our carriers; they’re all products we manufacture. That really sets us apart.” The products are high–quality versions of human fashion. “I take my inspiration from things I like to wear. Or from my son who’s almost 17 years old. I thought no one was interpreting people clothes for dogs. So, I designed a ski parka, a down puffer coat, a barn coat and cashmere sweaters in multiple colors.” Because Canine Styles encompasses three stores and a warehouse, they’re also one of the few places in Manhattan where customers can walk in and say, “I need four of those beds in that size and color” and they’ll be delivered that day. Canine Styles has carved out a niche for itself with its reputation for fine pet goods as well as top– notch grooming, but Mark says they go hand in hand. As ecommerce upended retail, Mark says he thinks the combination of grooming and retail saved them because grooming brings people in on a regular basis. He says that a big part of success in any business is being able to visualize what you want. That, and knowing your customer. Here’s to the next 30 years! ✂

e all know that we need to clean and disinfect our salons to protect our clients and ourselves, but what are we working against? The best way to defeat your enemy is to know your enemy. Here are the top 5 canine pathogens you need to worry about.
This bacteria species is known for causing canine upper respiratory infec-
tions—known colloquially as kennel cough. This disease in dogs is usually self–limiting and mild, but much like the flu in humans, can cause complications in immunocompromised and elderly populations. Kennel cough is known for being extremely contagious through droplet transmission. Each cough produces aerosolized droplets of mucus which are chock–full of bacteria. These droplets hang in the air and on surfaces, waiting to come into

contact with another dog. B. bronchiseptica are gram–negative organisms, which means they have multiple cell membranes. This gives them a little extra protection which can make them harder to kill. They also can sometimes present with tail–like structures called flagella, which helps their motility and could contribute to their high infectivity. Kennel cough’s cousin B. pertussis can cause a human respiratory infec-

RABIES Rabies is caused by a couple different types of lyssavirus (named for Lyssa, the Greek goddess of rage and fury). The virus causes a fatal disease that begins with flu–like symptoms. Although rabies is extremely rare in the US, it is estimated that 59,000 people die annually worldwide from the disease. An incredible 99% of cases are transmitted by dogs, and more than half of the cases involve children under the age of 15. Rabies has been around for centuries, and reports of

rabid dogs pepper our history all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia. It is exceedingly unlikely that you will ever have a rabid dog in the salon due to the strict vaccine protocol in this country. The best way you can protect against rabies virus is not just to disinfect, but to ask for proof of vaccination from all your clients.

As if the disease wasn’t bad enough, parvovirus is also known for being incredibly hardy out in the environment.
Canine parvovirus is another virus with a high mortality rate, but the disease has only been around since the 1970s. Parvovirus causes such severe diarrhea and vomiting that the body is unable to restore its water and electrolyte balance. Treatment is often mostly palliative to try to keep the dog hydrated and prevent further loss of fluids, while also staving off secondary infections that can arise due to the weakened immune status. As if the disease wasn’t bad enough, parvovirus is also known for being incredibly hardy out in the environment. Transmission is through feces, and since infected dogs typically

have severe diarrhea, there is a lot of opportunity for contamination. The virus can persist for very long periods in organic material, including soil. If you have had a dog with parvovirus in your salon, decontamination protocols must be followed to ensure the virus is eliminated. Bleach is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to inactive parvovirus, although a number of veterinary–grade disinfectants will also do the job nicely. Typical quaternary RABIES ammonium disinfectants and vinegar– based cleaners will not be effective. Just as with rabies, requiring dogs to be vaccinated against parvovirus will protect you and your salon better than disinfecting alone.
CANINE INFLUENZA Similar to human influenza, canine influenza is a highly contagious viral infection that causes an upper respiratory infection. Influenza viruses are known for having a high mutation rate which gives rise to different strains (this is why the flu shot changes every year!). Strains of canine influenza are thought to have originated from equine and avian influenza. A huge outbreak in Chicago put canine influenza on the radar in 2015. It is likely that we will see new strains periodically popping up, especially with the huge influx of international dogs into the US. Some strains are particularly virulent, meaning that all dogs exposed will be infected. Like the human flu, the mortality rate among healthy populations is low, but the immunocompromised and elderly are at risk for complications. The silver lining is that this virus appears to be readily inactivated by all the major veterinary–grade disinfectants. However, because of its high rate of infection, additional hand-

Ringworm’s name is a complete misnomer because the infection has nothing to do with worms. Being holistic is simply taking into account the
very serious question was asked of me this week that had to do with what I thought, holistically, about the use of restraints and restraining techniques during the grooming process. I get the impression that many groomers are confused about no-restraint, and kennel–free options when wanting to be more holistic in their approach to grooming their clients’ pets. According to the dictionary definition, holistic means treating the whole individual while considering mental and social factors (rather than just the symptoms of the disease or skin issue.) Being holistic is simply taking into account the mental, physical
and social health of the animal one is working on and has very little to do with being anti–restraint. Every dog and cat comes to the grooming table with an individual personality, level of social skills, routine behaviors that are developed by living with their particular family, individual grooming needs and baggage of

All of these factors come into play from the moment you greet them at the front door to the moment they go home. Most dogs in a regular salon or mobile appointment are fairly used to the process or are being trained and conditioned to the grooming routine.

Some pets, however, must be restrained to keep them safe and to keep the groomer safe. It is the job of the groomer to meet each individual pet at the level of energy that the particular pet requires for a safe and productive grooming experience. I specialize in the pets that have been hurt, are terrified, have social issues and some that are just plain ornery. On any given day I have at least three or four “red zone” pets that I am
rehabilitating. They have continuously taught me that every new individual pet that I meet for the first time needs a tailored behavioral plan in order to best serve the grooming process, as well as the health of the mind and spirit of the animal. My ultimate goal with every pet is to envision a future where muzzles are not necessary, calmness is given and received, and the pet loves coming in for the experience—not just to get the groom done at any cost.

Every pet I serve is on a certain level of this journey. I believe that in order to heal the skin or make the coat beautiful, one must help ease the spirit of these precious beings that live in a world of energy. Restraints and restraining techniques are simply tools that an animal care specialist uses to keep the grooming process safe. each individual case matters more than not restraining at all. There are methods that I prefer over others, but this does not mean that my way is better, or another groomer is wrong, it simply means that my preferences are shaped by my successes. I prefer not to use muzzles and can count on one hand the times that I have used one in the last fifteen years. This doesn’t mean I won’t use one, I simply try other methods first, like towel wraps, grooming loop manipulation and, at times, a brave assistant to provide a distraction. I have only met a handful of dogs in my lifetime that truly hate to be kenneled, as many of them prefer to have a den to go to in order to relax. Cage-free is a wonderful environment if the groomers in charge have strong dog language skills. If not, this can be a
disaster waiting to happen. I feel that everything that we offer our clients—no matter what our specialty—is valuable and works for that individual and the clients they serve. My hope is that groomers who are feeling guilt because they secretly want to restrain sometimes can feel free to exercise caution and safety above some vague standard of care that really doesn’t serve the individual pet. Groomers are rich in individuality themselves and each one has a certain level of skill in handling behaviorally challenging pets and services offered. Animals are like people; they don’t like everybody and sometimes there are personality clashes between groomer and pet. It is our responsibility to recognize this and make sure that each pet has the chance to be
paired with someone that connects with them. It is more important to approach each pet with an open heart and make sure they receive the level of love, care and safety that they deserve. ✂

ummer months are a timer for New England kids to make memories while taking a well– deserved break from school. Those seemingly small things that turn into lasting memories might include working through the summer reading list, laughing with friends while waiting in a long line under the chocolate and vanilla twist sign at the ice cream stand and wearing flip flops instead of snow boots for a change. For professional pet groomer Jessica Watt, one summer stands out. “When I was eleven years old, we had a new neighbor move in next door who owned a grooming shop, Groom
n’ Style,” says the now twenty–seven– year–old groomer, Jessica Watt. Watt’s mother did not want her to spend her summer around the house, so eleven–year–old Watt soon found herself helping out new neighbor Dawn Quaglia at Groom n’ Style. “I was so ecstatic to start my first job, and with animals no less, I couldn’t have gotten luckier,” says Watt. Watt was already comfortable around animals, growing up on a small farm in Rehoboth, MA. “We had just about every animal; from peacocks, turkeys, and chickens to our pet bull, always at least ten cats, and always dogs. confident due to the guidance and patience of her boss and teacher, and by taking things slow. “Heads and faces were pretty daunting at first, but she was very patient, and once it clicked for me, I felt a lot of confidence.” In high school, Watt studied mechanics at Bristol County Agricultural High School in Dighton, MA. After graduating, she continued grooming, working at Petco and then becoming the salon manager. Looking back, Watt remembers what the learning process was like for her when she first began grooming, which she was able to conquer with the help of her patient teacher. “I doubted myself a lot, but once I got it, I never looked back,” says Watt. “We also had a significant amount of difficult dogs to groom, so at times that was hard but it also has made me the groomer I am today.” Her grooming career has brought with it new friends, new opportunities, lessons learned—along with her own two very special dogs. “My dogs that I have now are a pug named Hazelnut and a chihuahua mix named Sully, who are my whole world,” Watt shares. Hazelnut or “Hazel” came in one day for a nail trim and that is when Watt learned that the current owner did not want to keep the pug. At the young age of one, Hazel had many health issues and would have to undergo major surgery, but Watt was committed to helping and caring for her new dog. “Because of her, I feel as if I have so much more patience and understanding for dogs than I have ever had. She has taught me so much and I’m so thankful for her.” Sully, the chihuahua mix, was also in need of a new home. “Sully’s family was bringing him to the shelter and someone who

knew them told them about me,” Watt explains. Sully became Watt’s foster dog which soon turned into an adoption. “I’m so lucky for both of them. They love being shop dogs!” From the very short nails to the detailed styles, Watt’s clients appreciate her caring work and her passion for grooming. “I have always been told that I am a passionate person about whatever it is I do.” Watt explains what it is like to reach a point when grooming is not just about getting dogs done or making a living, but it is truly about loving the work with each individual animal; emphasizing the importance of groomers having to love what they do. Bichons are one of Watt’s most popular breeds when it comes to her clientele, and she loves any dogs that require hand scissoring and a big round head. Difficult dogs are another area of expertise for Watt; the ones that are fearful and do not have a whole lot of trust. “In my opinion, there is no greater feeling than getting one of those dogs and finally having that moment of clarity for the dog,” she says. While her clients appreciate her work, they also appreciate her naturally caring attitude towards their pets. “My clients have also frequently told me they like that I treat their babies the way I treat my own. And I strive to do that with every single dog.” Being a manager, Watt has figured out which qualities to look for in new groomers coming into the salon in order to increase the likelihood that they will be successful. There is one thing that she believes every groomer should have, and that is drive. “You need drive and you need heart for this job. You will deal with dogs, pet parents and coworkers

that will make you want to leave and never turn back. You have to be able to push through your emotions sometimes and never give up. Realize why you are in this profession. It's for the dogs. You make a difference, and if you let every little bump in the road affect you, this is not the job for you. You will have trying days where no dog will cooperate; no pet parent will listen to your advice. You will see a lot of cases of neglect, but you keep on going for the dogs.” All groomers know what it is like to work hard and face potential burnout. Watt has learned that it is important to recognize it and not to let it sneak up; taking time off when it is needed. Whether working with a difficult dog, having a client that is less than polite or having a bad day with coworkers, there are always challenges
that will arise, but there are the many rewards, too. Along with grooming, Watt has developed many skills and has many achievements working with pets, like becoming a manager and mentor at Petco and becoming a dog trainer and working for TADSAW, a program that trains service dogs for veterans. Watt made the move to work for a small family business, Wicked Clean Dog, which is where she currently grooms. “Leaving corporate grooming for a smaller family business is a move I’m so proud of and couldn’t be happier that I made,” she says. In her free time, Watt enjoys hiking with her dogs and she plans to combine her passions in the future by owning a dog daycare which provides hiking with dogs. Watt continues to grow as a

groomer, and she shares everything she knows with her clients in order to provide them with valuable education for providing the best to their pets. “My mission as a groomer is to grow every day, learn every day. Teach pet parents literally everything I know, and to always put the dogs’ needs first and foremost.” Watt continues to let her passion lead as she works hard and provides individual care for the pets that she works with. She understands the importance of not letting hard days define her career and if another groomer asks her advice, she would tell them the same thing. “Unfortunately, we will not have an easy day every day. It’s impossible, but, those moments, when it gets tough, they make us stronger groomers and stronger people all around.” ✂

Clean YOUR Up ACT! by Khris Berry
There is an old adage that goes like this: Change is inevitable. Although this holds true in almost everything in our lives, it perhaps rings the most true to groomers and pet professionals.
G
rooming (and pet services) are simply not the same industry they were in the past. Whether you are speaking one year ago or one decade ago, the influx of the pet into more and more homes is creating a whirlwind of change and activity for the pet professional. One can surf the internet and find countless statistics on not only the growth of the pet population, but on the growth of the pet industry as well. We are surfing a rising tide and many groomers are feeling overwhelmed at every turn with new clients, new products, new processes, new practices and new problems. In order to manage our way through

growth and change to calmer seas, it may help to begin with the one thing in the world you can control—YOU! While growth, change and general chaos may abound in the industry, and even your workplace on some days, ensuring that you are presenting the best version of you to your clients—canine and human—will help you succeed. So let’s take a moment and look at both the hardest and easiest element to control in your workspace—again, you.
GENERAL APPEARANCE: DRESS FOR SUCCESS Groomers have many options, and while there is no standard “groomer
dress code”, learning to present yourself as a professional to clients begins with looking like a professional. What groomer hasn’t rolled around in a Golden Retriever bath and blow–out only to be called to greet a customer immediately after? Learning to manage your appearance while completing hairy, wet and often dirty duties is a balancing act. Think easy maintenance; select clothing that is both durable yet comfortable and will allow you to remain hair/dirt free to greet your clients. Thanks to innovation, there are many high–performance fabrics on the market today—both in grooming salon apparel as well as the medical scrub field—which offer the ability to dry quickly yet remain hair–free and allow you to enjoy the freedom to lift, bend and squat comfortably. Choose hair and makeup styles which will endure the rigors of a groomer’s day—hopefully you will leave your job looking as fresh as you did at the beginning of the day! Remember, you only get one opportunity to make a first impression on each client. What level of professionalism would you like for them to relate to you?

PROFESSIONALISM: WALK THE WALK Now that you are properly dressed and styled for your career, let’s discuss how you interact with clients and co– workers. Webster’s Dictionary defines professionalism as the conduct, aims or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person. As groomers, how do we define the qualities of a professional groomer? It may be best to allow our responsibilities define those qualities; we are responsible for the wellbeing of the pets in our care, for interacting with their owners in a partnership manner and to offer valuable services which increase the quality of life for them. To achieve all of these

A professional pet groomer should conduct themselves with those three qualities in mind in their interactions with clients and pet. If you use those qualities as your guidelines, you are well on your way to professional behavior.

to provide a healthy environment to complete a groomer’s work. When working with animals in any manner, learning how to identify, prevent, and protect against communicable diseases and pests is critical. When giving your salon a sanitation makeover, use your senses—all of them! Your nose can lead you to the source of potential problems, but be careful that you aren’t masking issues with cleaning supplies or

scent delivery sources (like candles, diffusers or air fresheners). Many times, I’ve heard people say, “Of course it smells like dogs, we are a dog grooming shop!” That statement is false. A clean environment should smell like “clean”. A visit to any air freshener aisle will tell you that “clean” is a marketable scent.
SKILLS: GO GET THEM! As the clients we serve grow, so do their needs. Their dogs are becoming more diverse; the options for styling and products are becoming more diverse. The need for humane yet effective handling skills is at an all–time high as clients seek more visibility and transparency in our services. Whatever your skill set is, find new ways to supplement your

education. Even if you are already good at handling pets, find new avenues to learn more techniques. Giving yourself a skill checkup is a great way to “clean up” another area for the professional groomer.
SAFETY: THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL SET OF ALL One of the most unique things about a career in grooming is that there are so many different elements which you can focus on. Some groomers brag about their clipper work while others are magicians with scissors. Some are fantastic at handling difficult dogs while others are great at client communications and human relationships. Whatever your strong suit, never forget that Groomer_Washer_Dryer_1_18.pdf

safety is the one skill set that every groomer in every shop in the world can build a foundation on. Building a safe skill set begins with awareness and compassion for the pets we are servicing. I meet thousands of groomers each year and I have never met one who tells me they do not love the dogs they work with—it is a unifying truth that binds all groomers. But loving the dogs is not equal to safety awareness, risk assessment and relying on the professional qualities of being moral, ethical and responsible. These are the backbone of creating a safe experience for each pet and the owner who loves them. Safe education and awareness are becoming readily available—both online and in–per1/5/18

So, when you think of cleaning up, while you may not immediately think of applying a “spiff up” session to yourself, look at the different segments above to see if you can make improvements in any aspect of your own career. Looking closely at yourself is not always an easy task; self–reflection is not light work and assessing your career skill set is not for the feint of heart. IS IT EVER ACCEPTABLE TO CLIP A
DOUBLE-COATED BREED? Hello there. I’ve just been reading through some articles on doublecoated breeds. While I understand that you cannot shave these breeds, what is your opinion on clipping or trimming the coat?
S
ome of these have harsh outer coats and I’ve seen videos of groomers clipping the outer coat. Is this correct or should the outer coat be left alone? Also, if it’s clipped, will it grow back to the original length and then stop growing again? I’m a trainee groomer trying to make sense of it all.” — Nastasha
62
Hi Natasha. This is a very confusing issue for new groomers. There are so many factors to consider when making the choice to trim the outer coat or
not. Your question is breed and/or coat type specific. Cutting the outer coat is perfectly acceptable on some breeds and coat types and not on others. To make things even more confusing, it may be acceptable to cut some areas of the body and not others. If you show your client a picture of a hand–stripped Wire Fox Terrier (WFT) and a clipped WFT, they will almost never choose the picture of the clipped dog. They bought a WFT because they wanted it to look like a WFT and clipping them makes them

look more like a poodle mix. There is a point at which the coat is ruined by clipping and will never look like it is supposed to again. It requires a long, expensive, uncomfortable, and in most cases, unnecessary rehabilitation of the coat to make it look like a WFT again. Most likely, the client was never given the choice, they simply took their puppy to the groomer and the groomer shaved it. There is no equivalent to this for humans, because if a stylist ruins your hair, it will grow back in a matter of
why you would not hand–strip a breed that is supposed to be hand–stripped: 1) You do not have the skill or you are unwilling or unable to do the work. 2) The owner does not wish to pay the added cost of hand–stripping. 3) The dog comes to you already clipped beyond the point of repair.

time and look the same. In the case of the WFT, the change in the coat due to clipping is permanent. It is the groomer's responsibility to educate the client about their options. In many cases, the owner will still choose to clipper instead of hand–strip, but at least they know the consequences of that choice. Pictures are the best way to show them the difference. If you choose to educate your client, it is likely that you will be introducing the client to something that they have never heard of before. Why did the breeder not educate them about hand–striping you might ask? Because there are almost no groomers who know how to do it. If you get a new WFT as a client over about two years of age and the coat has completely gone soft from clipping, there is really no point in having the conversation with the owner. Shaming them at this point for not knowing what the groomer should have told them in the first place is not a good way to build a trusting relationship. You could, however, tell them about hand–stripping so that they will know for their next dog. It has been my experience that people who own Terriers tend to own several of them throughout their lives, one after another, or sometimes two or more at a time. If you are not willing or able to learn how to hand–strip, at least know the groomers in your area who do and offer your clients the choice. It is the responsible thing to do. Here are three reasons why you would not hand–strip a breed that is supposed to be hand–stripped: 1) You do not have the skill or you are unwilling or unable to do the work, 2) the owner does not wish to pay the added cost of hand–stripping, 3) the dog comes to you already clipped beyond the point of repair. Again, shaming them for something that they did not understand does not help anyone. or teddy bear cut. They do not realize that this coat may never grow back the same—or at all. It is so unfortunate that the owners are never informed of the potential consequences. Often the owners will still choose to shave their dogs despite warnings, but at least they are making an educated choice. The consequences may be slightly less drastic if you trim the coat, leaving a few inches rather than shave it completely down, but both types of trimming can have a permanent effect. WFTs and Pomeranians are two of the most extreme cases that we see in
the grooming salon. The looks of these two breeds can be dramatically and permanently altered by groomers undenounced to the owners. Many blousy double–coated breeds may suffer the same fate as the Pomeranian, including Australian Shepherds, American Eskimo Dogs and Golden Retrievers, to name a few. If you get a new client in your salon who has been shaved and its coat is ruined, be gentle in telling the owner. Again, shaming them for something that they did not understand does not help anyone. with jackets or patterns like English Springer Spaniels or Cocker Spaniels, it is correct and virtually harmless to trim the outer coat. Often groomers incorrectly shave the pattern. The proper technique is to card the coat so that much of the undercoat is removed and then hand–strip and trim the outer coat to create the pattern. This very rarely has long–term negative effects on the coat. Shaving the coat, on the other hand, can cause irreparable damage. When discussing the grooming with your clients, try not to use phrases like “show groom “or “show trim”. They will almost always come back with, “Oh he’s not a show dog, he’s just a pet”. Try instead to use terms like “proper trim”, “correct techniques”, “modified techniques” or “alternative techniques”. Keep in mind that using the phrase “show grooming” only refers to the most correct way to groom that breed. Many pet owners who never intend to show their dogs still want them to look like the breed is supposed to look. Your question about the how the coat grows back is tricky because there are multiple factors that determine whether the coat grows back to its original length. Genetics, whether the dog has been spayed or neutered, age, breed and coat type can all play a roll. If all goes well, the coat will look like it was never trimmed. I hope that helps.
