GROOMING
MATTERS by Daryl Conner
T
here are approximately 78.2 million dogs and 86.4 million cats owned in the United States. And we pet stylists take care of the grooming needs of many of them. For groomers who work in a shop situation, this means that sometimes we are working on cats and dogs in the same building, often at the same time. And while many cats share a home with one or more dogs, being in a strange environment, surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of strange dogs, can cause extreme anxiety in our feline customers. There are some key steps that you can take to reduce or minimize this stress.

• If you have enough cat clientele, consider having a “cat’s only” day. If that is not feasible, schedule cats to arrive before or after dog clients check in. Having them arrive when there are no dogs milling about, bouncing and barking, is a major plus. • Have a quiet room ready to house cats, away from dogs. Ideally cats will be placed in a cage, in its open carrier, so it has the option to stay in the familiar space or explore the cage a bit. • It is optimal for cats to be housed in the highest cages possible. They feel more secure when they are elevated above the activities of the shop, and can look down at what is
GroomertoGroomer.com
happening around them. • Plugging in a Comfort Zone diffuser the evening before you expect cats to be in the building helps many cats to stay calm. Comfort Zone is a stress reducing pheromone. • Pheromones can also be sprayed on your grooming smock, tools and table. Look around your work area and imagine how it would appear to a cat. Take their infinitely acute senses into consideration. VISION A cat’s fight or flight response can be triggered by seeing rapid, unexpected movement, such as dogs,

other cats, or people maneuvering about. In an ideal world you will have a small room designated as “feline friendly” space, but if that is impossible, get creative. Think of ways you can manage to block the cat’s view to movement around your workstation. Think outside the box; can you possibly hang a shower curtain so that it can be pulled around your grooming station when you work on cats? How about placing one of those folding screens that people sometimes use to block off a space in a room? HEARING Cats’ hearing is much more sensitive than that of humans and dogs (Cats’ hearing stops at 65 khz, whereas humans’ hearing stops at 20 khz). The normal sounds that
can be found in a grooming area, such as dogs barking, water running, and high velocity dryers working, can overwhelm a cat’s senses. Some groomers find that Happy Hoodies work well to lessen the assault of sound on a cat when it is being dried, but beyond that, try to keep the area as quiet as possible in order to lessen kitty stress. Housing a feline in a cage near a dog that is barking is a recipe that may result in one very nervous cat. SMELL A cat has approximately 60 to 80 million olfactory cells. Compare this to a human, who has between 5 and 20 million. It is impossible for us to imagine how intense the smells in the area where pets are groomed must seem to a cat. Try to keep

your hands, cages, tools, and table clean to minimize the odor of other animals while the cat is in your care. Avoid harsh cleaning products that have a strong odor, as well. Consider cleaning with white vinegar. It is safe, inexpensive, environmentally friendly and very effective. The high acidity of the vinegar kills most mold, bacteria, and germs. Once the scent evaporates, only the smell of “clean” lingers behind. SAFETY MATTERS PREVENTING ESCAPES If your business mostly caters to dogs, it will behoove you to look around your space with the eyes of a cat once in a while. You know that gate that keeps loose dogs from gaining access to the entrance door? Any cat worth its salt can sail over a
gate and slip out your door so fast it will make your head spin. How about that high window that you never worry about a dog reaching? A cat could zip out of it in a flash. Unlike dogs, cats can leap up to 5 times the height of their body. Loose ceiling tiles make an excellent place for a cat to jump up behind and hide, and any little gap in a wall or behind a piece of equipment can make an easy exit for a frightened cat. Examine your space thinking as a cat might, and make sure it is safe and escape proof. RESTRAINT While “safety” loops, or grooming loops are commonly used devices when it comes to keeping dogs in the tub or on the table, they should never be placed around a cat’s neck. Cats lack the strong ridge of
muscle that dogs have on their necks, and can easily suffer serious injury if restrained by any type of device that goes around their neck. HAVE A PLAN Working with cats invites a whole new set of risks to the grooming arena. What if a cat gets off your table and there is a cat aggressive dog in the shop? What if a cat is injured during grooming? What if the cat becomes frightened and combative? Consider all the risks and devise a plan so you will know how to react if a problem develops. If you have staff, brainstorm with all the employees and make sure everyone is aware of your cat handling protocols. PRODUCTS AND TOOLS Many shampoos, conditioners,

GROOMER STORIES
#GROOMER STORIES
a By Melissa Vier
I
was about thirteen, and I can remember reading an issue of Groomer to Groomer Magazine that was collected at a family friend’s grooming salon. I had already been doing everything I could to learn about grooming, and now I was eating up the articles in this magazine like it was Seventeen. I knew from early on that I was going to be in this industry, and I was fortunate enough to have support and encouragement. When we could, my family and I would go to dog shows on the weekends where I would admire the many breeds polished to perfection. I would practice my grooming on our family labs with nail trims and brushing until I got my show dog, an English Cocker Spaniel, who I could actually learn to groom with.

When I was a teenager I asked for grooming tools for Christmas, and when I received some brushes, blades, and shears, all I wanted to do that Christmas day was groom. Any groomer, handler, or breeder who would talk to me had my undivided attention. I had great admiration for groomers; looking up to them like stars. I fell in love with everything about the grooming industry; the people, the dogs, the tools, and the magazines. Now at 25 I am running a successful training and grooming business. I am doing what I love everyday which is training and grooming dogs, coaching students, and even teaching grooming workshops. I still have the same passion for what I do, and the same admiration for others in my field now as I did when I was starting out. I work very hard every day, and not a moment goes by that I am not grateful for my career, and my business.

There is something special about being in this industry, and being surrounded by people who love animals, and who have kind hearts. To me the best groomers are patient, calm, loving, and caring, but also strong and hard-working. Groomers are incredible people. I try to make it a point to stay in touch with groomer friends because, really, there is no one else who understands exactly what we do. I have met so many amazing people and admire the work of so many talented artists in this industry. Every groomer has a story to tell. Some were born into the grooming world, knowing they would never do anything else. Others fell into the grooming world by chance, and knew they were where they are meant to be. By exploring and sharing these personal stories, we will continue to inspire both seasoned groomers, and those just starting out, we will preserve this community of passionate individuals, and we will continue to grow together as an industry as we learn more about each other. There are groomers from all over the world supporting and encouraging each other every day. The community we share should be cherished for what it is; a community of like-minded, passionate individuals. My grooming story started years ago when I was just a young girl who loved animals and wouldn’t for a moment daydream about doing anything else. My dedication and passion for working with animals taught me responsibility and patience. I never lost sight of what I wanted to do as I grew up, went through high school, and graduated. Working with animals played a big role in shaping me into the adult I am today. I will always remember the faces of those who took the time to talk to me when I was a young
groomer. Those groomers who were so welcoming, and who thought it was important that I knew what they knew. Today my grooming specialty is positive grooming. I enjoy helping dogs transform from nervous or aggressive to comfortable and calm for grooming. I also enjoy teaching pet owners the importance of including grooming in their dog’s training because dogs that learn that grooming is just a part of life and have positive experiences with it will be the ones that have the best experiences at the salon. For me, looking back to where it all started, reminds me to be grateful that this all happened for me, and pushes me to keep growing. Remembering the story of how you got started, that very first groom, and all of the moments along the way that brought you to this moment right now brings a feeling of thankfulness and appreciation. As you inspire future generations of groomers, and as our industry grows it is important that the sense of community remains. In the following issues you will be reading stories about groomers with similarities to yourself, but who are also all very unique in their own ways. As we explore these stories I would like to remind you to take the time to remember your own grooming story, and how you found your way into this wonderfully rewarding field. ✂

PRETTY A GROOMER’S ROLE IN PET DENTAL HEALTH E by Mary Oquendo e
I
consider one of the most important aspects of a nose to tail assessment during check-in for each pet is noting the condition of the pet’s teeth. Mind you, I do not just willy-nilly open up a pet’s mouth. I exercise caution and approach with care as any pet may pose a bite risk. AS A GROOMER, WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT THAT PET’S TEETH? Three reasons that immediately come to mind are: an awareness of possible behavioral problems, establishing authority and compassion with your clients, and increasing your bottom line. AWARENESS OF BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS Think about how you feel when
22

you have a toothache. Now imagine a pet living in that pain and then you touch their face to trim. This pet is going to protect him or herself and will pose a bite risk. As groomers, we need a heads up so that we may plan accordingly. Since smaller dogs are more prone to periodontal disease, it accounts for that higher percentage of smaller dogs that are apt to bite when their face is handled during grooming. ESTABLISHING AUTHORITY & COMPASSION Many owners simply do not understand that poor oral health is directly linked to liver, kidney, heart, and lung disease. That’s because bacteria from food remains enters the bloodstream through bleeding gums and travels throughout the body. Over time, it weakens the immune

system impacting those organs. By educating clients on the importance of good dental hygiene they may be able to increase the life of their beloved pet. Many veterinary professionals estimate that increase in life expectancy can be as high as three to five years. And don’t forget to mention the savings in veterinarian bills if the pet is healthier. Keep in mind that it may not be negligence on the part of the owner. This owner may not be aware of the consequences. Educate this client, do not ridicule or demean them. Show compassion in your approach. INCREASE YOUR BOTTOM LINE This is twofold; longevity, as in an extra three to five years grooming this pet, as well and in retail sales.
Does the pet seem to have difficulty eating, exhibits a loss of appetite, or begs more for the owner’s softer food? Is the pet sleeping more? All of these signs point to periodontal disease.
Most dental products are fairly small and do not take up much room even if you have limited retail space. Financially, it does not make sense to spend time talking about products and then sending your client to a retailer who then makes the sale. OPENING UP A DIALOGUE WITH A CLIENT During the nose to tail assessment is a good time to talk to your client regarding the signs of periodontal disease. SIGNS A GROOMER MAY NOTICE INCLUDE: •Flinching or pulling away from you •Quivering lips •Growling, snapping, or hissing •Red, swollen, or bleeding gums •Tartar •Visible root or bulge of crown of tooth •Open sores on face, jaw, or mouth •Ulcers in mouth •Bad breath If you notice any of the above, ask the owner if they notice their pet is rubbing their face on the carpet, floor, or furniture. Does the pet seem to have difficulty eating, exhibits a loss of appetite, or begs more for the owner’s softer food? Is the pet sleeping more? All of these signs point to periodontal disease. WHAT IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE? Periodontal disease develops over time in a series of stages when the build up of food particles and bacteria forms plaque along the gum line. Plaque is the milky white film, which develops on teeth everyday. If plaque is not removed it combines with minerals in saliva to form tartar. Tartar is also called calculus. It only takes three to five days to change from plaque to tartar. Calculus irritates gum tissue and

leads to gingivitis. Inflammation caused by gingivitis will work its way down the root canal, causing the tooth to loosen. Gingivitis will separate the gums from the teeth and form pockets that will harbor abscesses that lead to bone loss. This can be very painful. THE STAGES OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE ARE: Stage 0: As it suggests, there is zero periodontal issues. Stage 1: There is slight build up of tartar and reddened gums. Stage 2: Tartar is thicker and gums are swollen. On x-ray, it would show slight bone loss. The gums will bleed if probed. Stage 3: Moderate build up of tartar and gums are receding. X-ray will show increasing bone loss.
Stage 4: Tartar may encapsulate the teeth with deep pockets of gum loss, as well as loose teeth and risk of abscesses. HOW CAN WE HELP OUR CLIENTS? LET’S START WITH EASY • Good quality dental treats that do not contain hidden sugars such as beet pulp, molasses, and fructose. The treat acts as friction to help remove plaque. I personally use raw bones, as well as chicken feet and necks. While I feel it is the superior method, not everyone is comfortable with raw bones. • Dental toys that either have raised nubs or strings. The nubs massage the gums, loosen plaque, and strengthen the muscles in the jaw. The string toys act as floss. Even if you have nothing more than a
reception counter to act as retail, these toys do not take up a lot of space. There are several brands of water additives that make it very easy for an owner to adhere to a dental plan for their pets. All they need to do is add it to their pet’s water bowl. MODERATE EFFORT • Chlorohexidine Wipes: These wipes are treated with a solution of chlorohexidine that kills bacteria. The owner rubs the teeth with the wipe several times a week. • Dental Gels: The gel is rubbed on by the owner or applied with a system such as Plaq Clnz on the gum line three-four times a week. MAXIMUM EFFORT • Daily Tooth Brushing: Caution the owner to use pet toothpaste.

Human toothpaste contains detergents and fluoride that may cause gastric upset if swallowed by the pet. There may be instances in which the periodontal disease is too advanced for the owner to rectify on their own. I direct such clients to a veterinarian professional of their choice to discuss available options for their pet. Educating your clients on the importance of developing and maintaining a pet dental program benefits the pet owner with a pet that lives a longer, healthier life. And at the end of the day, isn’t that why we do what we do? I know I’ll appreciate that extra quality time with my clients. ✂

t some point in the grooming salon, we have all had those clients who come in with that one particular request: “please make sure you leave the eyelashes”, and as accommodating groomers, we do our best to make those clients happy. Groomers are doing just that, but many are doing it in a more fun and creative way. The first time I remember seeing eyelashes as an add-on on a dog, it was done by Carmen Baker when she presented her creatively groomed poodle as “The Hoochie Poochie”. Carmen had groomed her dog to appear as though she was wearing hot pants with fishnet stockings, high heels, and a puffy cap sleeve low cut top showing off her ample sculptured cleavage. Topping it all off, the Hoochie Poochie had bleached curly blonde

hair (her topknot had been curled using a curling iron) and then just above the eyes, she had big flirty eyelashes; what a sight! I asked a few creative groomers, including Angela Kumpe, Jonelle Shmoldas, and Victoria Gabay what they use and how to add this girly bit of fun to their clients’ dogs. Victoria and Angela both use tacky glue to secure the eyelashes in place. Fig 1) Start by carefully removing the eyelashes from the package, apply a very thin line of glue to the outside edge of the eyelash and give the glue a minute to get a little tacky before applying. Fig 2) Once it is ready, position the eyelash just above the eye and not where the actual eyelashes are. According to Kumpe, this will be more comfortable for the dog and, in most cases, they will leave them alone.

ike most people who enter the pet care industry, Rachel Stalcoskie has had a lifelong love affair with animals. She began her career working with them when she was just fifteen years old. She got involved with zoos, dog kennels, and veterinary hospitals. “In 2006 I became a certified, licensed veterinary technician,” said Rachel. “I started pet grooming out of my basement, then went to a storefront, and moved up from there. I have been grooming ever since.” Bruce Kolar also grew up with animals – everything from hamsters
to horses. After helping his fiancé, Rachel, at her first grooming salon, Bruce decided to leave the stressful corporate world and trade it for a career where he would be surrounded by love – both from Rachel and from all of the animals. “In July 2010, we bought a second shop together,” shares Rachel. “It has become so busy, that we closed the first shop and have put all of our energy into Rachel Ann’s Country Clips Pet Grooming. It is located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. It is the busiest privately owned salon in the area.”

One of the reasons for their tremendous success is that the Country Clips was built on and is operated on love. Rachel and her fiancé, Bruce, share a deep-seated love for the pets that they care for, and for each other. “One of our biggest things is the comfort of the pets we care for, and finding the right products to use on them. We want to know that what we use will be beneficial to them,” share an enthusiastic Rachel and Bruce. “We keep up on the latest and greatest, and we thoroughly investigate all the products that we

Every client who correctly answers the question is entered into a drawing for a free grooming.” Often, people reach out to Rachel and Bruce with questions. “We don’t always realize how much of an impact of what we do has on the lives of our clients and their pets,” says Rachel. “Education is the biggest thing,” says Rachel. “Many times we get puppies in and new owners don’t know how to brush and care for them. just don’t know. We try to educate them. And, we will refer them to other experts if they need help with training or behavior issues.” Country Clips has prepared educational handouts for their clients. They made up a postcard with all of the local veterinarians and emergency clinics and their telephone numbers. Their website is packed with tons of information for their clients – not just about their grooming services, but also filled with information about pets in general and their care.

Their website is www. countryclipspetgrooming.com. It tells all about the services and products that Country Clips offers. Clients can book appointments online. There are also a lot of training and educational reading and videos on their site. Country Clips has an online magazine called Let’s Paws a Moment Magazine. It was created as a fun way to keep their clients informed about what is happening in the pet community. Rachel believes in continued education for herself too. She is a member of the National Cat Groomers Institute of America. And, Rachel recently became an AKC Safety Certified Groomer. Rachel has appeared on local TV shows many times to talk about grooming topics like shedding, summer hairstyles for pets, and sun and flea protection products. She has also talked about other interesting topics like the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, and how to keep your pets safe during holiday gatherings. “Because of my training as
a veterinary technician, if I see something that needs to be seen by a veterinarian, we send the pet to a vet,” says Rachel. “We have a really great relationship with our area veterinarians,” shares Rachel happily. “When the vets diagnose something, we can often help them solve the problem. For example – a pet that has a skin problem and needs to be bathed every three days with a specific shampoo. We work together diligently to help close the divide that often exists between veterinarians and groomers.” Rachel and Bruce’s commitment to using only the best equipment and products on their client’s pets has them attending many tradeshows and seminars. It was at one of these shows, Groom Expo in Hershey, Pennsylvania, that they found their latest piece of technology – and it’s paying off in a big way. One of the booths was demonstrating a new Micro-Bubble bathing system, and Bruce and Rachel just had to know more about it and how it works.

“Getting the Micro-Bubble bathing system was the best decision we ever made….Seriously!” says an excited Rachel. “In the beginning, we had a lot of questions and skepticism about the system. We wanted to know how you could clean a pet with just water and bubbles – and no shampoo. “It was a big investment,” continues Rachel. “When we first got it, we tried it out on a variety of pets – itchy dogs, shedding dogs, normal dogs, and cats, too – just to see how well it would perform. My uncle is a chemist. He came over during our trial period to look at the system. He was blown away with the technology.” “We always insist on the best for our clients,” says Bruce. “That’s what prompted us to look at the bathing machine in the first place. We’ve been using the system for a year now. Whatever is on the pet comes off during the Micro-Bubble bath – and some of it is pretty gross…skin flakes and such. This technology makes the pet’s hair feel amazing!” “When we use it on pets with skin issues and allergies, we’ve had great success by using the microbubble bathing first. It opens and cleans out the pores, and then we follow up with a medicated shampoo recommended by their veterinarian. The vets are very pleased with the results and how quickly we see positive changes in the pets.” And, that’s exactly what Rachel Stalcoskie and Bruce Kolar wanted to do when they opened Country Clips… make a positive, loving impact on the lives of pets and their owners. ✂

ell Kelly, I am happy to hear that you are going to learn some new things! I think you will find that these methods of drying will help you achieve a faster, more beautiful result, which could equal more pay and more tips! Remember to be patient with yourself and the dog. Stand dryers can be tedious to master and high velocity dryers are scary, especially around the head, when you are not accustomed to the dog handling skills required. At first, these methods may actually add time to your grooming service but they will most likely save you time in the long run. When you comb and brush a
coat that has dried curly, you simply keep pulling out new curls with each stoke. In this case, you find yourself re-trimming the coat each time you comb or brush. Even when you have scissored or clippered it smooth multiple times, it will not stay looking good for long. On a coat that needs de-shedding and/or a finish that lies flat, you will find that drying by hand reduces manual deshedding, flipping curls, and “bedhead” areas. If you are choosing to use the forced-air-only method of drying, I suggest the following: Use eye and ear protection. Also protect the dog’s ears by using cotton in the ears or a Happy Hoodie, or both. Avoid

the dog’s eyes, ears, nose, rectum, mouth, and genitals with the nozzle. The dog must be forced-airdried as soon as it comes out of the bathtub (also known as highvelocity-drying or HV drying). Keep one hand on the dog and one hand holding the nozzle pointed at the dog’s skin at all times. Some forcedair dryers get hot. If you hold it in one place on the dog’s skin for too long it may burn the skin. Keep it moving at a steady pace but avoid rapid whipping motions. After you have it dry or mostly dry, it must be brushed out thoroughly to remove all mats and debris and to dry and separate each hair. Then it can be blown out with the forced-air

With the final blowout, you can inspect your work and make sure that your coat is perfect. Perfect means that each hair is clean, straight, dry, and individual. Avoid brushing the coat while forced-air-drying. If you have a brush in one hand and a nozzle in the other hand, there is very little assistance for the dog. Also, you run the risk of brush-burn. When the air from the HV dryer hits the back of the brush it may thrust the bristles of the brush into the dog’s skin. It is
safer to use a “blow, then brush, then blow” procedure. For curly coats, keep the nozzle perpendicular to the dog’s body and concentrate on forcing the coat straight. Keep the nozzle closer to the skin for short coat and farther away for longer coat. A hissing sound is a good indication that you are producing enough force to stretch and straighten the coat. You can choose any nozzle for this but it must be perpendicular to the skin at all times. Extra-long coat is better
dried on a low velocity, as the ends might whip into undesirable tangles. Focus on one area at a time. Avoid towel drying too much and prematurely blowing areas. You want the areas that you are not purposefully blowing to remain wet. This will help prevent areas that you are not focused on from inadvertently drying in curls. This applies to fluff drying with a stand dryer as well. If you want the coat to lie flat, use a rectangular nozzle. As you

pass over the skin, tilt the nozzle to nearly parallel to the skin in smoothing flattening motions, with the lay of the coat. If you choose to finish your coat preparation with a stand dryer, instead of the all HV method, go ahead and blow out the coat until it is dry or nearly dry with the HV Dryer. Instead of brushing and then blowing out the coat again, simply fluff and dry the coat with a stand dryer. Keep the stand dryer to the right of you (left if you are left-handed) with the nozzle pointing toward the dog from your torso at all times. Adjust the height of the dryer so that when the barrel is parallel to the floor it will blow out of your sternum. Whatever direction your torso is facing is the direction the air should be blowing. You can now work
with a comb to insure that you have achieved a coat that has each hair clean, straight, dry, and individual. When the hair is prepared in this way, your finish will take a fraction of the time because you are not wasting time re-grooming the dog in a quest for the plush finish that you will never achieve. Good luck in your new job! ✂
around the flow of air by reaching over and under the barrel. In this position you always have it conveniently within reach to adjust and re-adjust and your aim will be excellent. Fluff drying is best achieved with a slicker brush. Brush only where the air is blowing on the coat and avoid blowing parts of the body in which you are not concentrating. Use medium to high heat and be careful not to let the warm air blow on one spot for too long. Brush out the tips of the coat, as well as any mats, in the direction that the coat grows, with repetitious light, short strokes. After the ends of the coat are free and the mats are removed, reverse your stroke and concentrate on stretching the coat straight with the assistance of the warm air. In both methods, check your work

HOW TO MAKE YOUR
BLADES
FLY THROUGH COAT E by Jeff Andrews e
T
oday, blade manufacturers are painting blades with a certain kind of paint to make them glide through coat. When the blades are used for an extended period of time, the paint starts to flake off because dog hair is very coarse and aggressive. These paint chips are hard to get out of the coat, short of washing the dog again. Here is a technique that I’ve used for years before painted blades were a thing. It’s an “Old School” method that we did years ago to help our blades go through coat when we roughed in before the bath. Back then, with 30 plus dogs in the shop every day, we didn’t have time to bath them before shaving them down. We called it “Waxing The Blade”. The wax I use can be found just

about anywhere and you can’t mistake the can. It’s a paste wax that contains 100% Carnauba Polymer Wax. It’s thick and it stays on longer. You can use car wax from the garage but regular car wax dries to a crusty finish. You can use a Q-tip to get the wax out of the tin and spread it on the back of the blade. Another way is to get bold and just dig out some on your finger tip. This is the best way to smear it all over the back of the blade. Getting it in the screw holes will help and won’t hurt anything. Try not to get it in the teeth of the blade, it won’t help getting it in there but it does wipe off easily. This is better than cleaning those paint chips out of the coat, right? If you’re using regular car wax it
will dry to a crusty finish, this paste wax doesn’t dry hard. Leave both on for about 10 – 15 minutes. Then get an old rag and wipe the residue off until you feel it get slick and shiny. This should last about 5 or 6 dogs, maybe more if you washed them first. I assume a waxed blade will fly through coat on a wet shave down. Back in the day this is all we had to help speed that blade through mats and tangled coat. It’s something worth trying! Have a great day grooming, and please read those labels. ✂ Jeff Andrews is a World Class Sharpener and owner of Northern Tails Sharpening, Inc. WHY CAN’T OUR PETS
E by Ellen Ehrlich e

It’s not “just a dog” or “just a cat”, by any means. Losing a beloved pet is losing a treasured family member and something every owner must face.
hen I stare into the cloudy eyes of my elderly poodle Jesse, I often wonder—why can’t our pets live forever? This old timer no longer hears the garage door open or his name being called. He sleeps more, eats less, and moves slower. His chocolate brown coat has thinned and is sprinkled with white. At fourteen, Jesse is a senior citizen. I worry when I think about the future. Many owners of geriatric pets do. I can’t imagine life without Jesse and yet I know I must face reality. The sad fact is we outlive our pets. It doesn’t matter how long they have been a part of our family and our lives. Love and bonding does not have a time frame set in stone. Jesse recently had a health scare that forced our family to discuss the inevitable, trying to come to grips with what the future holds for our elderly
pet. Just thinking about life without our dog makes my heart skip a beat. He changed my life. This is what pets do; they are a source of comfort, friendship, inspiration, and unconditional love. It’s not “just a dog” or “just a cat”, by any means. Losing a beloved pet is losing a treasured family member and something every owner must face. Many people go through the grieving process when they lose a pet. The process is similar to losing a family member or friend. It occurs in stages: denial, anger, guilt, depression,

acceptance, and resolution. Grief depends on the role the pet played in your life. Perhaps it was your childhood pet or a rescue situation. If it was a working dog, that person might not only be grieving the loss of a best friend, but also the loss of independence. For many that live alone, including seniors, their pet was a source of companionship. If you cared for your pet through a protracted illness, you likely grew to love him/her even more. As I thought about the grieving process, I asked this question on the

Facebook group Grooming Smarter “How has losing a beloved pet affected you?” Losing her own dog resulted in Christa Kanellis becoming a groomer. She used every bit of love she felt for the dog she lost and put it towards other people’s dogs. Heidi Bulmer said, “My whole routine changed when I lost my dog at seventeen. Now, when I groom the senior dogs, I am more delicate and compassionate. I am more patient with their owners.” Here are some suggestions if you have lost a pet: 1. Try to find new meaning and joy in your own life. 2. Stay connected with friends. 3. Don’t let anyone tell you how to feel. 4. Reach out to others who have lost pets.
5.
Take care of yourself, emotionally and physically. 6. Maintain your normal routine, especially if you have other pets. 7. Create a legacy. 8. Seek professional help if you need it. You are not alone. Find fellow animal lovers, family members, and friends that understand what you are going through. Ask your veterinarian or local shelter if they can recommend a local pet loss counselor or support group. BEHAVIOR CLIPS
by Gary Wilkes
BEHAVIOR ODDS AND ENDS Here are a few “odds and ends” of training advice that can be shared with your clients or used in your everyday life:

CAT HOUSE HEAT I get bombarded on Facebook with products that someone imagined I would like. I saw an ad for a small, heated cat-house. At first I dismissed it as I have two indoor Bengals and live in Arizona. Heated anything isn’t a necessity. Then I read the comments. A woman used one of these gizmos to attract a feral cat. Then moved it inside and left the door open. The cat has gradually “warmed” to being inside the house with far less trouble than most people experience. The point is that sometimes very gentle reinforcers can have a dramatic effect on the behavior for fearful animals.
GroomertoGroomer.com
SAVING THE CUSHIONS FOR GUESTS I have a client with a gorgeous six-month-old purebred German Shepherd. He is progressing wonderfully, but last night he destroyed an outdoor cushion. It happens. However, I want to teach him to leave cushions alone. I cut open the back of the cushion and inserted a small “indoor containment” transmitter. We left it lying on the floor. When he approaches he will get a pulsing shock that is far less than what you get when you shuffle across the carpet and touch something metallic. It’s just enough to teach him to leave cushions alone. The same item can
keep dogs out of the trash can, off beds, and away from the front door when guests come to the house. If you are interested, this is the kind of product that can also be a profitable addition to your bottom line. COUNTER SURFING This can be the bane of most dog owners existence. The same for cats that leave their litter-dusted paws on counter tops. Here are two solutions: Dogs: Get a battery operated “passive infrared motion detector” and put it on the counter top. When the dog sticks its nose above the counter, a horrific alarm goes off. This is the equivalent of the word “NO” to identify which behavior caused the punishment to follow. Cats: When you get a new cat, go to a home improvement store and purchase some sheets of clear plastic used for fluorescent-tube ceiling lights.
Get enough to cover the length of the counter-top. Duck-tape the plastic at a 45 degree angle from the edge of the counter to the back wall. If the cat jumps up, it will quickly slide off to the ground. If you are concerned about injury from sliding off, get some temporary carpet to cover the landing zone. Live with this arrangement for a couple weeks and you will teach the cat that counter tops are the equivalent of mountain tops. THE FRONT DOOR Want a dog to learn to never rush the front door? If the dog also hates having its nails trimmed, you’re in luck. Ring your door bell and wait for the chaos as the dog comes flying forward. Trim one nail. Repeat. Within three or four repetitions, the sound of the bell will create a very front-door savvy dog. You can do that same thing with any other experience the dog
doesn’t like such as taking a pill or taking a bath. If the owner already has a struggle over simple handling issues, it makes sense to make use of them. If you wish to remove the anxiety over those problems, you can do it after you put them to work for you. BACK SEAT DRIVER Here’s one that affects a lot of people – dogs that won’t stay in the back seat of the car. Go to an office supply store and get one of those plastic mats that protect carpet from wheeled office chairs. The underside has plastic cones to prevent the mat from sliding around. Cut a piece to fit the front seat and turn it upside down. Yes, it’s not going to feel good. No, it’s not going to hurt the dog. If you want, you can teach “get in the back seat” by simply saying that as the dog lands on the mat. Then give the dog a treat. After two or three rides, watch the

behavior decline. If you add periodic treats for passive back-seat driving, you’ll have a pretty good solution.

HAIR BRUSHING FOR SENSITIVE DOGS If you have a double coated dog that hates being brushed and/or
vacuum sweepers, get an extra-long hose for a shop-vac and put it in an adjacent room with the door partially closed. Suddenly the sound of the vacuum is dramatically decreased and the dog will allow you to brush them. The vacuum makes getting rid of the hair workable as you strip out hunks of dead hair. Lavishly use treats during the brushing so you break the process down into short duration repetitions at first. When you are done, use plastic box-sealing tape or duck-tape to remove the rest of the hair. T H E M E AS U R E O F
success E by Michelle Robinson e
What is success? What does it really mean....to you? To some, it may mean financial independence; you can buy whatever you want and not bother with the price tag. It may mean being able to pay the bills as they come in. Everything has a price, and success is no different.
M
any times we beat ourselves up because we are not like...so and so. If only I had her client list or his gift for gab, I could be successful. Well, the truth is, when you compare yourself to someone else and what you view as “success”, you are setting yourself up to fail. The grass always looks greener on the other side of the hill, but you don’t know what price “so and so” had to pay to get there. What does it take to be successful? That is a loaded question! Success means different

things to different people. For me, it means being able to have some control in my career. When I worked at a big box store the groomers had no control over the dogs that were scheduled for them. The grooming managers were no more than figureheads because they were not allowed to make decisions about the salon. If a customer decided that they didn’t like the haircut provided, according to the limitations of coat, breed and skin, the groomer took the hit for it. No matter how many notes were taken, or who witnessed
the conversation. If the customer complained, the groomer lost the commission for the service, and there was nothing that could be done about it. Being in business for myself and having the option of not dealing with employees was another big plus. Being able to choose which customers I wanted to take, scheduling holidays off, being able to attend birthdays, anniversaries & memorial services, and working 16 hours a day, 6 days a week, to be able to enjoy the profession that I had

all have people that are camped out around us that sometimes mean well, but they have a way of stealing our thunder. They will say things like “If I were you, I wouldn’t do that” or “Are you sure you don’t want to just go to XYZ’s shop? They are doing really well and you could make good money there!” Maybe you have heard this one, “Grooming! Do you really think you are going to make ANY money playing with dogs?” Whatever the jab is, make sure that you have clear cut goals for yourself that are realistic. It is easy to get sandbagged by someone when you are just wandering around waiting for that cream puff client list. I once heard someone say “if you don’t have a goal, any road will get you there.” That is so true! You have to be focused on what you want,
embarked upon, having people that appreciated a well-groomed pet with regular appointments, instead of being a strip artist for every matted pet that padded my way was another successful feather in my cap. The ability to live, not just exist! Success is not always attached to a dollar sign or a bright shiny new car/truck or house note. Success is about overcoming an obstacle no matter how great or small. It may mean that you set a goal to stop smoking and you made it! Maybe it was to lose or gain weight, to start your certification, attend a long anticipated function, or to compete openly for the first time. Whatever it is, it is about something that YOU want! Never let someone push you into a corner of their limitations. Unfortunately, we

and set a plan to get there. If you want to increase your client list by 3 new clients per week, that’s great! How do you plan on doing it? What is your reward for hitting your goal? Does the reward match the goal? Let me give you an example of what I did: When I first started mobile things were tough. I had lost my job, and I found out that due to the housing market, my house was pretty much worthless. I had no income, no client list, and a savings account. I made a decision to pick myself up by my bootstraps and run as hard as I could. I purchased a ream of colored paper and turned it into 2,000 flyers. Every day for 2 weeks I set a goal to hand out 20 flyers a day. I would strike up conversations with people in the pet food aisle in the grocery

store, I went to pet stores, vet’s offices, dog parks, shelters, rescues… anything or anybody that had to do with pets. At the end of the week, if I had handed out, not just placed flyers on car windows, but actually approached someone and handed them a flyer, I got to have a movie day. Every day I would leave with 40 flyers in my hand, some days I would comeback with none, others I may have only handed out 10. It got to the point where it was too easy for me hit 100 contacts a week. So I raised the stakes and re-set the goal. Now, I know what you are thinking, “Oh My Gosh, your phone must have been ringing off the hook! You must have filled your
appointment book to the max your first week in business!” If you were thinking that, let me just tell you..... that would be a BIG FAT NOPE!! I got a lot of curious calls; the ones I like to call “tire kickers”, they just want to price shop and see what is new, but really don’t want to leave where they are. Was I frustrated? You bet! Did I have some thumb-sucking moments? You would be right again! This is the thing; I had to make a decision, and it basically boiled down to this: I could do one of two things. I could tuck my tail between my legs and pee on the floor, or I could get back out there and get after it again. I made a decision that I was never going to work for someone else again. Even if I

had to pull a tub on a bicycle and wash dogs door to door! That is really what success is all about. It’s about having a dream and being willing to fight for it when things get tough. I know how scary it is to be self-supporting and the phone is not ringing or people are canceling appointments, and there are HUGE gaps in your schedule, or when you are on a slim-fast diet because you’re missing meals and the bills are due. When everything depends on you, and if you fail everything fails; it can be overwhelming. If I can leave you with one thing, it would be this: Cry today if you need to, pray if you have to, if the powers that be give you another day to fight again, set your bearings, dust yourself off, and fight again! That is what success is all about. Fighting for your dream! I believe in you! You Can Do It! ✂

NORTHWEST GROOMING SHOW April 21 - 24, 2016 Since its first year, the Northwest Grooming Show had been one of the fastest growing shows in the grooming industry. But, last year’s turnout was surprising to even the most optimistic of people. For the first time in Barkleigh show history, pre-registration seminar packages were sold out. Fortunately, a reconfiguration of the seating at the show made it possible for everyone to attend seminars. As a result, this year’s show will be much bigger and better! More space has been allocated for both vendors and classrooms. That means more ven-
dors, seminars, and speakers than ever before to go along with the GroomTeam USA sanctioned breed contests, a Rescue Round-up competition, and a creative styling competition. The Northwest Grooming Show separates itself from other shows in many ways. The groomers that attend are some of the most social and helpful that you will find anywhere. It doesn’t take long to feel comfortable with new groomers that you meet. But, the show might be best known for something that has nothing to do with grooming: The Murano
Hotel. The Murano is the most unique grooming show host hotel. The facility doubles as a glass art museum, with each floor featuring a different artist. “The Northwest Grooming Show has always had strong support from the local groomers,” states Barkleigh Show Planner Rebecca Shipman, “But, the last few years we have seen groomers from all over the country making the trip out to the show. It is definitely a show that every groomer should experience at least once.” ✂

oodles and Doodles make up a large portion of our regular Bread & Butter client list. Many of these clients want a short, low maintenance trim. Short - but not shaved is a good description. The use of a Clipper Vac system is a time saver and eliminates a lot of back brushing as well as hair on the floor and in the air. For this model, a “0” snap on comb placed over a “30” blade was used for the body. An “E” comb was used on the legs and topknot and a “1” on the cheeks. These blade choices can easily be altered to accommodate the client. Keep in mind that when using a Clipper Vac, the

coat will be approximately one length shorter than without. As with every pet, good preparation is important. A thorough bath and conditioning with a quality pet shampoo, followed by blow-drying the coat out straight is imperative. Sanitary, nail trimming, and ear cleaning are also completed prior to styling. Fig.1) Lift the dog’s head and begin clipping at the jawline, following coat growth direction (#0 snap on comb with Clipper Vac). Fig.7) Blend the tail onto the back and trim the underside of the tail. Do not create a distinct tail band. Fig.8) Trim the rear legs to form parallel columns. Fig.9) To trim the inside of the rear legs, lift the opposite leg. Fig.10) Place the dog close to the edge of the table and trim the hock, rounding upward. Fig.11) Blend the hips and upper thighs to the back. Fig.12) Use curved shears to neaten the tuck up area and to follow the natural underline of the dog, up through the front legs onto the chest. Fig.13) Use long straight shears to trim the front legs. First, trim downward on the outside of the leg. Fig.14) Lift the opposite leg and trim the inside of the front legs. Next,
stand in front of the dog and lift the front leg slightly. Trim straight up the front of the legs, forming parallel columns. Fig.15) Use thinning shears to trim the eye corners. Do not trim bald the bridge of the nose. Fig.16) Trim the cheek in front of the ear with a snap on comb (#1 comb, no clipper vac). Fig.17) To trim the other side, fold the ear back and hold the jaw with your other hand and then trim. Fig.18) Switch to a longer snap on comb and trim the topskull from back to front (#E, no Clipper Vac). Fig.19) Use chunkers to blend the tops of the ears to the topknot and to trim the muzzle into a round shape. Fig.20) Grasp the muzzle and use chunkers to blend and round the jaw and muzzle. Fig.21) Use long curved shears to shape the ears and tidy the edges. Fig.22) Lift the tail and tidy the edges. The use of snap on combs, especially when used in conjunction with a Clipper Vac system, are incredible time savers! Let the guard attachments and Clipper Vac do most of the work for you. When finishing up the style by scissoring, keep in mind that you are only tidying and shaping the coat, not taking off length. This type of trim is one of our most popular trims for large Poodle type dogs and can be adapted to suit almost any coated pet on your “Bread & Butter” list. ✂

NEW PRODUCTS ANDIS INTRODUCES DRY CARE™ HIGH PRESSURE AIR CLEANER FOR IMPROVED CLIPPER AND TRIMMER MAINTENANCE

Banners
Say it in a big way with these attention-grabbing banners!
6 x 2’ and 4’ x 2’ banners cover the gamut of things that you would do in your grooming salon or kennel. Get your clients attention the moment they walk in the door. These banners have grommets for ease of display and will pay back their cost in a day!
Aaronco Posters AARONCO publishes a complete collection of laminated posters that help groomers communicate with their customers by eliminating the confusion due to various grooming styles. Each poster represents one of the seven AKC dog groups, showing properly groomed dogs. The posters are printed in black and white and are laminated for attractiveness and durability, which allows them to be hung with or without framing. They are sold individually and in sets of 9. Posters sold individually ship in their own cardboard tube. Posters sold in the set of 9 ship in one cardboard tube.
