ou simply cannot achieve a beautiful groom if the dog hasn’t been properly bathed, dried and prepped according to its coat type. While these are the most introductory parts of grooming—and tasks that most groomers can do with their eyes closed—their importance is often glossed over. Hopefully this article will help you to be mindful of preparing the coat in order to set yourself up for mastering that perfect groom. Before you begin wetting the coat, take this time to ensure the nozzle is on an appropriate spray setting and that the water temperature is comfortable for the dog. The regular body temperature of dogs is a few degrees higher than a human, so be sure the water feels warm to your skin. Fig 1) When wetting the head of the dog, come from

behind and let the water roll from the back of the skull forward over the face and ears. This ensures you don’t accidentally spray water into the nasal cavity or ear canal. If you are working with a dog who is prone to ear infections, or just for an added safety measure, you can place cotton balls inside the ears to prevent any water from entering the canal.

Fig 2) Select a shampoo that is appropriate for the dog’s skin, coat and maintenance needs. Also be sure that the shampoo is diluted appropriately. For this bath, the shampoo is applied through a pressurized shampooing system. Once shampoo has been applied, you can massage it into the coat, making sure it reaches the skin. to the dog’s head and face and massage it through. Fig 4) Begin rinsing the dog, working from the highest point and working your way back and down. This method is preferable for a thorough, efficient rinsing job. You cannot complete a masterpiece if the skin and coat are still dirty or have shampoo residue. Alternatively, a coat that has not been

thoroughly rinsed can cause a host of skin problems for the dog. Fig 5) To begin drying, give the coat a good “squeeze” all over to help remove some of the excess water. If you squeeze down a leg and soap bubbles appear, give the dog another rinse. A couple of notes: Some groomers prefer to do multiple baths on a dog. If you are a double washer, go back and

repeat steps 2–4 to ensure you are set up for success. Also, if the dog’s coat or skin needs to be conditioned, now would be the time to add a conditioner appropriate for them. Fig 6) After the dog has been thoroughly rinsed, you can then clean the ears. Any water that might have accidentally gotten into the ear canal during the bath can be dried up

a foot. Work your way up and forward as you dry. A general rule of thumb is to keep the dryer nozzle the same distance from the dog as the hair is long. So, areas that have longer coat, you would hold the nozzle further away to prevent tangling it or creating whip knots. Also, the drying technique depends on the dog’s individual coat type. For drop–coated breeds such as Shih Tzus, you would want to dry the coat in the direction it is intended to lay. A curly–coated dog, such as a Poodle or Bichon Frise, you would want to dry the coat in an upwards direction. This not only helps stretch the curl out as you dry, but also helps the coat stand up and allows it to have more volume when you are scissoring. Fig 9) Make sure you are drying every inch of the coat including hard–to–see areas like the back of the dog, armpits and inside the rear legs. A Happy Hoodie was used on this dog to help alleviate the sound of the dryer. It is made of a terry cloth material so it helps absorb moisture as well. Fig 10) To begin drying the head and ears, remove the Happy Hoodie. For safety reasons, the cone nozzle on the HV dryer should be removed when drying the entirety of the dog’s face. The nozzle concentrates the velocity through a smaller opening, which allows your drying to be more powerful, but it can cause serious damage if accidentally blown toward the ear canal, eyes or muzzle. To finish preparing this coat type to be trimmed, it needs to be fluff dried (also known as stretch drying, or heat drying). This allows the coat to be thoroughly brushed out and stretches the wave or curl out so that every hair can be cut to a consistent length. Fig 11) A brushing spray is misted

on the coat first. Fig 12) Just as we did with the force dryer, begin fluff drying on a foot and work your way up the leg and forward on the dog. It is important to mention here that, while heat is used in this process along with brushing, it shouldn’t be overly hot—keep your hands in between the dryer and the dog’s skin the entire time. If it’s too hot for your hands, it’s too hot for the dog. Fig 13) There are many tools available to assist you with this process. A regular human hair dryer (on medium heat) was used for this groom. Many groomers will place the hair dryer on their neck or under their chin so that both hands are free. Additionally, there are many gadgets available to help hold the dryer for you (also used here). Some groomers prefer the use of a stand dryer. Also, a soft, flexible slicker was chosen for this coat as the coat is not very thick and a stiff slicker was not necessary. Fig 14) Once the dog is thoroughly fluff dried, you should be able to comb it out. There are many different styles of combs and combing techniques. For the benefits of this groom, we used a wider–toothed Poodle comb to begin, placing the teeth perpendicular to the skin. From there, you will glide the comb up each leg. This allows you to lift each hair up and out so they can be trimmed to the same length. Fig 15) Inversely, comb the body of the dog from front to back, top to bottom. If you happen across any tangles while combing, set the comb aside and use your slicker brush to remove them. Be sure to check those hard–to–reach places, such as armpits. Fig 16) Finish by running your

comb through the head, ears and face. Fig 17) Begin your clipper prep work by using a trimmer on a #40 blade setting to clean out the paw pads. Start by setting your blade just behind the front two toenails on the paw and work from front to back. You can lightly scoop in between the paw pads to get excess hair, being careful not to dig in too far. Once you have finished shaving your paw pads, you can take a soft slicker and lightly brush over the pad to see if any additional hairs poke out. Make sure you hold the dog’s legs in a comfortable position when you lift them. Fig 18) The next step to completing the prep work is to clipper the rectum. Set your trimmer on a #10 blade setting and begin by making a horizontal swipe the width of your blade, just gliding over the rectum. Swipe your blade in the other direction to finish the rectum. When completed, you should have a shaved area the size of about a postage stamp around the rectum. Fig 19) Then, using a #10 blade, remove the excess hair from around the lower abdomen. For male dogs (shown here), this includes the area on top of and on the sides of the penis, as well as a small area in front of the penis. For female dogs, this should include the area directly around the vulva. Fig 20) Using the same #10 blade, lightly skim over the hair on the inside of each rear leg to blend the shaved abdomen into the longer hair of the legs. This blade length can be adjusted based on the sensitivity of the pet’s skin.

FIG. 21

FIG. 22

Fig 21) Next, trim the toenails to just in front of the quick. If you aren’t sure where the quick lies, take off a tiny amount of nail at a time until you see a small circle appear in the center of the nail—that is the quick. Fig 22) To round off the sharp edges that can be left after the toenails have been clipped, use a rotary tool to sand off all the way around the toenail. Be sure to buff the top of the nail as well. Preparing your grooms in the same order each time will allow you to create a system and be faster in your day–to–day routines. Maybe it isn’t new equipment you need to set yourself apart—take a trip back to the basics and refocus your energy on flawless prep! &

GROOMING THE

E by Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins, ICMG e

T

he Australian Shepherd is one of America’s most popular and intelligent dog breeds. It is an American breed—not Australian—as their name would suggest. The origins of the “Aussie” are truly international with links to British herding dogs, the Basques of Spain, and the migrations of sheep and their herders from Britain and

20

Groomer to Groomer • Vol 40 Ed 1 • January 2021

Spain to North America, South America and Australia. Calling them “Australian” may have begun in the western United States in the 1800’s when referring to the Merino sheep with their prized wool being shipped to Australia, along with their herding dogs. Aussies are born naturally with either a normal tail, a shortGroomertoGroomer.com

ened tail or that most breed–recognized bobtail—a genetic trait that served to avoid injury when running among the legs of large herds of cattle and sheep. They come in variety of beautiful colors such as blue or red merle and red or black tri–color coats, and are of the double–coated variety. Their eyes are often uniquely marbled and sometimes different colors

If the client is concerned about shedding around their homes, explain to them that clipping does not stop shedding— it just makes it worse as the thickened undercoat grows back. from one another. There are three common myths that can cause clients to wrongly ask their groomer to cut the natural double coat of an Aussie. These require us to take time to educate the client about the proper care and function of the double coat. If the client is concerned about shedding around their homes, explain to them that clipping does not stop shedding—it just makes it worse as the thickened undercoat grows back. Tell them that you offer a de–shedding service, then put them on a regular schedule for low–cost maintenance brush–outs if the client does not want to groom at home in between services. Second, if they are concerned because their dog is panting during warm weather, explain to them about how panting is the normal way dogs cool themselves, and that the outer guard hairs of the double coat actually prevent the sun’s damaging rays from reaching the dog’s delicate skin. Educate them about the benefits of de–shedding undercoat while preserving topcoat. Finally, if they have seen what some in our industry are calling “contour trims” on the internet and like this scissored– sculpted look because it is pretty, tell them about the damage being done to those dogs when the guard hairs are removed and the

puffy undercoat is scissored up like a poodle. Excessive trimming is a disqualification in the AKC show ring. This should guide us also in the pet grooming world. These so–called “contour trims” cut up to, and into, the undercoat. We can destroy the natural balance of the topcoat and undercoat with this excessive trimming. The Australian Shepherd is a beautiful dog in its natural coat—help to keep it that way! To begin the groom, shampoo the Australian Shepherd and then rinse. Shampoo opens the cuticle of the hairs, making them easier to shed out and remove using your high velocity dryer while still in the tub. Blowing at a right angle, perpendicular to the skin, will help to loosen the undercoat for a better de–shedding result because the open cuticle makes the hair bigger, enabling the air of the dryer to get a better “grip” on it. Wet hair is also better contained when blown in the tub. Apply high–quality, mineral– rich conditioners to nourish this natural coat with collagen, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, etc. which a medium coat needs. Finish drying the dog with an emphasis on keeping the coat along the torso and spine as flat– lying as possible. A damp shammy towel laid over the spine can be helpful to keep it flat–lying during the drying process. Continue to GroomertoGroomer.com

FACES IN A SNAP

I

E by Daryl Conner e

would be embarrassed to tell you how long it used to take me to create a cute round or “teddy bear-style” head on dogs. I would groom the dog’s body completely, then, using thinning shears, scissors and a comb, I would pick and fuss and trim for a long, long time before achieving the look I desired. Then, one day, a groomer I greatly admired said, “Just use snap-on combs!” The thought had literally never occurred to me. I am quite sure my hands shook the first time I gave it a try, but after working up my courage on that fateful day, I have never looked back. This technique can be done using adjustable blade trimmers with comb attachments or a full-sized clipper, with or without a clipper vacuum system. You can achieve excellent, adorable results in a fraction of the time it takes to attain a similar look using scissors alone.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO GET STARTED: • Start with a perfectly clean and conditioned coat. • Brush the damp coat so the hair lies in roughly the direction you will want the finished hair to end up. • Dry the head completely, blowing the coat flat where you want it to lie smoothly and blowing the opposite direction of the fur growth where you want it to look fluffy. (For

26

Groomer to Groomer • Vol 40 Ed 1 • January 2021

example, if you want the top of the head to be fluffy, but the cheeks to look flat, dry each area accordingly.) • Brush and comb the head once it is dry to remove dead coat and any tangles. Follow this with a very fine-toothed comb to separate the hair as much as possible. This will help you achieve a more uniform finish. • If you’d like to clip a little bit

GroomertoGroomer.com

from the inner eye corner, do that before you begin working with combs. • I usually choose a snap-on comb length that is one or two sizes longer than the body coat to begin. Sometimes I end up with shorter combs, but prefer to err on the longer side until I see how the hair responds to the trimming.

FIG. 2 Next, work from behind the head at the crest of the neck, clipping against the grain, shortening the hair and blending from the body coat into the long head coat. If the hair has a poodle-type texture, I clip the top of the head from back to front all over; however, if the hair is straighter and lies naturally flatter (sometimes with a natural part), I will often clip from the center of the head down towards the side and ears. You can experiment until you get the hang of it. The longer combs are quite forgiving, allowing you the ability to explore your artistic side until you create the desired look.

I often go against the grain on the cheeks, which clips the hair a bit shorter, then clip with the lay of the coat on the muzzle to leave more hair in that area. On drop-eared dogs, if you want them short, you can make them uniformly plush and tidy by using the same comb on them, top and underside. If you are going for a rounder head and want the ears to stand out a bit, leave the hair that grows on the side of the head just under the ear a bit fuller to give the ears a little lift. Conversely, if you want the ears to lay close to the head, trim that hair shorter. Of course you may be leaving the ears long and just trimming up the ends, in which case you will not use your trimmer on them at all. I keep a soft hair tie at the ready, and if I am leaving the ears long, I often tie them up out of the way while I work on the head so I don’t accidentally zip off hair I don’t intend to. You can then blend from behind the ear into the body coat. Since this area is prone to tangling on many dogs, I sometimes use my scissors to shorten this spot even more once the clipping is done. The nice thing about using a trimmer or clipper and combs is that you can press the clipper against the skin to clip evenly, following the dog’s natural contours, or just float the comb over the hair, taking off some length, but leaving enough to do some creative scissor work later. Comb through the head and face well and stand back to see how your roughed-in work looks. If it is too long, repeat with a comb one size shorter.

To finish up your work, decide if you want to use scissors, thinners or chunkers. I usually use scissors first, tidying up the ears and over the eyes. Next, I put my beloved chunkers to work. Combing everything forward, I neaten up any uneven spots. I like to use a short blade (usually a #30) to clean up any straggly hairs on the upper lip, just under the nose. This was once described to me as “kissy lips,” and my customers like the look and the fact that it removes a lot of hair that remains damp all the time. I also check to make sure the flews do not have clumps of dark, stained hair. If they do, I trim that up too.

On average, I can groom a small- to medium-sized dog’s head like this in about 5-10 minutes. A far cry from the 25-30 minutes I used to spend on this oh-so-important part of the dog. Using snap-on combs can help you create adorable short faces in a snap!

uppies will remember their first grooming experience for their entire life so it is very important to make this experience a positive one. It will set the stage for their behavior and mindset in the grooming salon going forward, so making sure they have a fun and stress–free experience is imperative for both the puppy and groomer. The puppy used for this groom is a three–month–old Bichon Frise. Before you begin, it is best to turn on the clipper and let the puppy adjust to the noise level. Fig 1) Working slowly and carefully, use a #0 snap–on comb over a #30 blade for the entire body, clipping from the shoul-

TECHNIQUES FOR FEARFUL DOGS E by Michelle Knowles e

Muzzle–free and restraint–free grooming are gaining momentum in our industry and are an important sign of the growth of communication between groomer and pet. FIG. 1

46

T

here are so many tools at our disposal, it can be hard to pinpoint where to start. Muzzles, hammocks, loops, sacks and catchpoles have all been used with great success, but are sometimes used at the cost of real communication with the animal you are working with. For those of you that are searching for a more gentle and communicative approach, here are some tips to get you started. Wrapping is a technique I learned from studying TTouch by Linda Tellington– Jones.1 Among the many touch techniques, wrapping with a towel or blanket is probably the one I use the most. My favorite tool is a beach towel because they are larger and a little thinner than regular towels. This wrapping technique is like a hug and helps to calm a nervous dog or humanely subdue a wiggly one. A nail trim can be facilitated on a small dog with anxiety issues with this method and a firm, calm assistant. This wrap can be executed as follows: Fig 1) Fold a large towel long ways twice.

FIG. 2

FIG. 3

FIG. 4

FIG. 5

FIG. 6

FIG. 7

Fig 2) Drape the middle of the towel on the back of the neck. Fig 3) Wrap the towel in a figure 8 around the body. Next is the ventral carry position with wrapping which allows you to safely lift or carry a dog: Fig 4) One arm goes through the front legs. Fig 5) The other arm goes through the back legs. Fig 6) This then exposes the feet for the nails, pads and trimming.

Using the towel as a shield can be useful for kennel–defensive dogs, or picking them up from the floor, out of the tub or off your table: Fig 7) Place a sturdy slip lead around the grooming loop and over the dog’s head. Fig 8) Fold your beach towel in half short ways.

Fig 9) While keeping the slip lead taut, drape the towel completely over the dog with a corner over the head. Fig 10) You can then safely scoop the dog up with the towel and slip lead to transport it to a different location. Working with a dog you are hoping not to muzzle can also be done by using your position in relation to the dog: Fig 11) Tighten the grooming loop so it is straight but not putting pressure on the neck. Then, pull the dog to the back of the table and work from behind.

FIG. 8

FIG. 9

FIG. 10

These are some of the tools and techniques I use to gently train fearful and unwilling dogs. Everything is done in a slow and methodical manner and I do not push the pet past its limits. &

THE

ROCKIN' RETRO

E by Julie Wilkins e

T

he Retro trim is a current-day version of the classic Dutch clip with some added-in modern flair and pizzaz to make it extreme and flashy. When I execute this clip, I think of the collectable antique ceramics and Steiff stuffed poodles from that era. Before you begin, start with a prepped dog, properly bathed and dried with ears cleaned and nails done. Clip the face, feet and sani areas to start. I usually do this with the second to closest blade setting on my clipper. You can use a variety of blade lengths to start the pattern, anywhere from a #7F to a #40, depending

50

on how close you want it or how sensitive the dog’s skin is. I start just under the ear, going with the coat growth direction, and shave around the back of the neck, leaving a “V” shape at the back of the head. I bring the line down to just above the shoulder layback. If you want it really tight, you could go back against the coat growth direction afterwards. Next, shave a strip the width of one blade down the dog’s back, continuing right up to the tip of the tail, using the spine as a guideline. Then shave the sides of the dog with the front line starting just after the last rib and the back line placed at the front of the back leg. This line may vary in width depending

on the length of the dog’s loin, but will be about one to two blade widths. I round all edges with the clipper to soften them. After setting your pattern, you want to edge-scissor all of the clippered areas and scissor or clipper-comb your jacket and hip areas, depending on how full or tight you want it. If using a clipper comb, I would go with a #1, #0 or an A. Use a #1

on the rear angulation, leaving hair for a shelf at the pin bone. Scissor in a nice rounded chest in the front and then scissor up your legs, leaving them full enough to balance the body. When finished with the body, it is time to move on to the head. I start by shaving the ears with a #40, #15, #10 or #7F, depending on how extreme you want

it and how dark the skin pigment is. Be careful not to nick when clipping around edges and folds of the ear leather. I usually hold it flat in my palm and clip out over the edge, going back with scissors later to do my final edging carefully. Finally, scissor up your head, leaving the highest point above the occiput to give you the most length of neck. Scissor a nice visor on the front and be sure to blend the “V” in the back of the head down into the neck. Some variations on this trim may include tasseled or beveled ears and a pom-pom tail. Don’t be afraid to give this funky and flashy Retro trim a try—it is sure to turn heads and is a lot of fun to do! roomer To Groomer is far more than just a magazine. Many people feel that it is the glue that keeps the grooming world connected. Groomer To Groomer Magazine was the brain child of Sally Liddick. Sally was a second–generation, small–town groomer. She created the GroomOGram, an informational publication that groomers would hand out to their clients (which is still being published today). With every order of GroomOGrams that she sent out, Sally included a little newsletter that she called “Groomer to Groomer Tips.” In it, Sally shared time–saving ideas and grooming tips that worked for her in her salon. Her aim was to educate other groomers and make their jobs easier. In addition to her tips, Sally

Groomer To Groomer Magazine reaches over 28,000 active pet care professionals throughout the world. Groomers in the US can sign up for a free subscription, while those in Canada and about 10 other countries pay for a subscription. It is also published in flipbook form online, where it reaches about 5,000 more readers. At this time, the magazine is only available in English, but Barkleigh Productions plans to publish and distribute versions of the magazine in other languages. The grooming industry has seen incredible advances in the last 40 years, in part because of the publication that has helped bring professionalism, respect, education and unity to its readers—Groomer To Groomer Magazine.
