GROOMING BUSINESS BASICS by Khris Berry
The Seasons of Your Life I
AS A GROOMER
f you ask any elementary school child to recite the seasons, they would likely list Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring. If you ask a romantic, you may hear Love listed. If you ask a sportsman, you would hear Baseball, Football, Basketball and maybe Golf or Hockey. Your perspective determines the seasons of your life as you know them. Ask any Groomer, and you are likely to hear answers such as Shave–Down Season, Flea Season,

Slow Season and The Holidays. Some may add Show Season and Puppy Season to the above list. Just like the seasons of our lives, a groomer’s seasons turn with the calendar, weather and whims of their clients. The turn of seasons often feels as uncontrollable as the cycles of the moon—leaving many groomers feeling as if they are riding high and low tides as these periods ebb and wane. But what if you could GroomertoGroomer.com
control the seasons that you live by? How would your life improve? Here are some suggestions for how to cope with, manipulate and monetize common Groomer Seasons:
SHAVE–DOWN SEASON Depending on which part of the world you live in, you will invariably encounter at least one, if not two, shave–down seasons each year. This season brings your once or twice per
Flea Season Its severity and impact on a grooming business can be devastating and impact the health and welfare of other clients.
year dogs out of the woodwork. Much like a groundhog seeing his shadow, shave–down season is generally heralded by an unseen force summoning these clients from their burrows. What groomer has not “donated extra time and effort to remove a severely matted dog from an encasement of fur, filth and feces? Grooming forums contain suggestions to survive shave–down season, such as assessing clients with “less than frequent client surcharges. Moving to a pricing system which allows you flexibility when determining the prices of shave–down season dogs will allow a groomer to charge correctly for their time. Another groomer survival trick for this season is to limit the “project dogs allowed on your schedule while charging a premium for those “project appoint-
ments. Finally, preparing for the impending season with new blades or freshly sharpened shears helps make easier work of a heavy burden.
FLEA SEASON (ALTERNATIVELY KNOWN AS FLEA AND TICK SEASON) Much like a long winter that refuses to release its grip on spring, flea season can resemble the season that won’t give up. Its severity and impact on a grooming business can be devastating and impact the health and welfare of other clients. Much like a well–planned military campaign, most groomers have strategic plans in place to defend their salons, their clients and themselves from these invaders. Which groomer out there has not checked themselves, their dogs and their children repeatedly after finding a single flea or tick in their workplace?

Comprehensive defensive plans are necessary when these tiny trespassing pests present themselves. Usually arriving without pomp and circumstance, flea season requires extra time, extra attention, extra cleaning and extra vigilance to navigate. Thorough intake exams will stop many of these pests from entering your salon—but if they make their way through your door, understanding the complexities of how these insects spread, thrive and move about will allow you to counsel your client to a flea–free pet. Many shops require pets to be flea–free upon entry, but even the most stringent flea prevention plan can be breached at one time or another. Owner education and communication is necessary. Armed with recommendations for treatment as well as lo-
cal veterinarian referrals as a resource for clients, you can ease your clients through developing their own care plan. An ounce of (flea) prevention is truly worth a pound of cure. Don’t hesitate to broadcast to your clients when flea season arrives so they can ensure that their pets are well protected.
SLOW SEASON Perhaps the most terrifying season of all, slow season can be daunting for groomers without a plan. Taking a page out of a squirrel’s survival book (or maybe your financial planner), groomers should plan ahead for some seasonality in their business. Slow season can be induced by natural occurrences such as cold weather, rainy season, school sessions or vacation season. Regardless of when it comes, you will undoubtedly know that slow
season has arrived. Groomers who plan for slow season financially can enjoy increased freedom during this time to delve into new education—perhaps learning a new technique, enjoying grooming tutorials or hands–on classes, or investing in improvements in their workplace. Groomers may even find time to start or finish projects or deep clean their workplace. This is a perfect time to invest more time into your clients, yourself and your career.
HOLIDAY SEASON This is the season which separates pet groomers. There are pet groomers who have worked through a holiday season and those who have not experienced it yet. Once you do, there is no going back—you will forever know what it means to groom during

the holidays. The last minute calls; the absurd requests; the generous tips; the bounty of treats, gifts, and well wishes from valued clients; the velocity of phone calls and influx of clients who need your services in a brief time frame all combine into the perfect storm of the holiday season. Savvy groomers look for strategies to stretch their time and energy during this season. Strategies can vary from only servicing pre–booking clients to only servicing ‘bath and tidy’ clients in the days surrounding a holiday—all are as unique as the groomers themselves.
SHOW SEASON This can mean different things to different groomers, but in every case, this season is eagerly anticipated. If you are a dog or cat show aficionado, you look forward to attending shows either near or far. You are eager to exhibit or attend, visit with other exhibitors, see or show your favorite breeds and recharge your passion. If you have an interest in competitive grooming, you are eager to attend or compete, visit with other competitors, see or showcase your favorite grooms and recharge your passion. If you are seeking education or attending the trade shows, you are eager to see new (or old favorite) seminars or vendors, visit with peers, shop, learn and recharge your passion. There is a common denominator here—show season is a great time to recharge your passion for your industry! So, when you think of the seasons of your life—step outside your usual box. Start to chart your OWN seasons and plan ahead for them. Groomers everywhere know these seasons just as well as they know the meaning of the first snowflake or the first autumn leaf. Celebrate and enjoy the seasons of YOUR life as a groomer! ✂

NOT JUST FOR
THE PETS! E by Kathy Hosler e
I took my sweet Flat Coated Retriever, Lil Abner, to be neutered today. I had complete confidence in his veterinarian and her staff. After all, she has cared for all my animals for close to thirty years and I have never had a problem of any kind.

ven though I fully expected everything to go smoothly during the surgery, I still felt a twinge of apprehension as I drove to the clinic. Picking up on my nervousness, Lil Abner was trembling when we entered the veterinarian’s lobby. As usual, we were warmly greeted by the staff, and they made a big fuss over Lil Abner as they took him to the back. But, the look in his eyes when I handed his leash to the vet tech made me feel guilty. They said that they
12

would call me around 11:00am to let me know how the surgery went. I went home to a quiet house. There was no Lil Abner to greet me at the door. Throughout the morning, thoughts kept creeping into my mind as I watched the clock: Why haven’t they called? Why is it taking so long? Has something gone wrong during the surgery and they don’t want to call me? Why did I even decide to have him neutered? As I was fretting and getting
GroomertoGroomer.com
myself worked up, the phone rang. It was the clinic manager. She said that the surgery went flawlessly and that I could pick up Lil Abner in an hour. Immediately, I felt a bit foolish for allowing myself to worry unnecessarily. My Lil Abner was his happy, waggy, loving self when I picked him up. That experience gave me a new outlook on separation anxiety. Pets aren’t the only ones that experience it. In fact, sometimes it’s the owner that feels extreme stress and anx-
iety when they leave their pet at a boarding kennel, veterinarian or a grooming salon. For many, they are not just leaving a pet, they are entrusting you with the most precious thing in their lives. The act of handing their pet to someone else can be very upsetting for them, especially if it is their first appointment with you. We groomers often don’t realize how difficult it can be for the owners when they are separated from their pet. Even though our main job is to care for the pets, sometimes we have to tend to an overly anxious owner’s needs too. Did you know that the way you interact with the owner and their pet at drop–off has a huge bearing on how they both act while the pet is being groomed? When a new client comes
in, greet them and their pet promptly and cheerfully. During check–in, don’t rush. If grooming is new to the pet, it’s probably new to the owner too. Calmly examine the pet and evaluate its condition. Discuss what type of clip is feasible based on the condition of the cat or dog’s coat. Tell the client what the grooming will entail and approximately how long it will take. Assure them that you will not stress the animal when grooming is new to them, and that you will take whatever time is necessary to allow their pet to enjoy the process. It’s often helpful to give the owner a brochure about the grooming procedure to read at home. No matter how clearly you explain what you are going to do to their pet, many owners are so anxious that they don’t really listen or retain what you have told them.
For many, they are not just leaving a pet, they are entrusting you with the
MOST PRECIOUS
THING in their lives.

A quick phone call to the owner shortly after they drop off their pet to tell them how things are going can really reassure them. That may help keep them from calling you every fifteen minutes to check on their baby. Many salons also have the owner sign a release form before they accept a pet for grooming. The most stressful time for many owners is when they have to hand their pet to someone and leave. Often they will cling to the pet and talk baby talk to them. They think that they are consoling them, but, in reality, they are causing increased anxiety for the pet and themselves. Then, the pet starts trembling and the owner hugs it even tighter. It’s a vicious cycle. We’ve all had clients where you almost have to pry the pet from the death grip that they have on them. To avoid traumatic, tearful fare-
wells, tell the owner that long, drawn– out good–byes escalate the amount of nervousness and apprehension their pet feels. Then say, “The best thing that you can do for your precious baby is to calmly hand him/her to me, give it a loving pat and a cheerful goodbye, and then quickly leave.” Some groomers allow owners to remain during the groom, but I strongly prefer that they leave. I have always found that the dogs and cats behave much better for me when the owners are not present. I give them a time to return for their pet, or tell them that I will call them a little bit before it is ready. That way they can

arrive at the salon about the same time as the pet is finished. A quick phone call to the owner shortly after they drop off their pet to tell them how things are going can really reassure them. That may help keep them from calling you every fifteen minutes to check on their baby. It’s even better if you take a couple of photos of their pet during the groom to send to them. When they pick up their freshly groomed dog or cat, it is also a nice touch to give them a Pet Report Card or a Little Angel Award—or even a Little Devil Award (available for purchase at Barkleighstore.com). You can’t imagine how many owners will post a picture of their pet and the awards all over social media. And, as we all know, free advertising like this is priceless. Small things like these awards, or fancy bows and bandanas, make your clients feel very special and encourage them to look forward to their pet’s next appointment. And, that appointment should be made at pick–up before they leave your salon. We groomers have to deal with many issues on a daily basis and separation anxiety is one that we have all experienced. You will never completely eliminate it, but incorporating some of these anxiety–reducing solutions can really help mitigate the problem and make grooming more enjoyable for everyone. ✂

s Cupcake my Pomeranian has gotten older, I found it necessary, for health reasons, to give her a shorter haircut. So I thought to myself, I may as well take advantage of the cute little ladybug that is my Cupcake and I will just cut in and color one right on her back. I started out by giving her a short haircut, taking her full coat down with a 5f blade on her back. And began the creative groom process by drawing the outline of the ladybug on to the back of the dog.
GroomertoGroomer.com
You can do this with an airbrush if you like, or even a chalk marker or a washable non–toxic marker. That way you know where your outlines are and you can follow those lines. If you’re not comfortable with free–handing, then make a stencil first and place the stencil on the dog and airbrush around it for your outlines. Fig 1) Once you have that done then you can use a small, comfortable pair of scissors, either curved or straight, to cut in the design. Fig 2) It’s always a good idea to

first test your colors with something temporary to see if that’s what you want to do. So first I used a bit of red temporary airbrush color for the wings of the ladybug after I had them cut in. Fig 3) Next I used the black temporary color to put the spots on. I put

way too many on and thought it looked more like watermelon on her back! It’s a good thing I used the temporary first or I would have been stuck with it. Fig 4) It is really difficult to get a vibrant red with temporary color. On her next visit to the shop, after

she had a nice bath and with all the temporary color gone, we applied a nice, rich red permanent color to the body of the ladybug and black semi–permanent for the head and to separate the wings and show the underbody of the ladybug.

Fig 5) The semi–permanent black didn’t work well on her coat, so to fix this problem, I pulled out my trusty airbrush gun to put in the black details. I use a few drops of India ink mixed into a solution of 50/50 water and alcohol that I keep on hand in a small bottle with a spritzer top. I can just grab it whenever I need a quick refill in the ink well on the airbrush gun. The alcohol dries the ink almost instantly as it goes on the dog. Once this is dry on the dog you really don’t have to worry about color transfer with it. And the great thing is, the India ink will completely wash out of the dog’s hair, leaving only the permanent hair color that will have to grow out and then be cut away. This usually takes about two to three haircuts, depending on how fast the dog grows out. There have been some cases
GroomertoGroomer.com
where, when the coat grows out, the design disappears and then will make a reappearance when the coat is cut short again. I personally have seen this on three animals. So if this is a client– owned pet, you really should do a color spot test a couple weeks in advance, if at all possible. ✂

Then I can teach you how to keep Fluffy looking and smelling fabulous. New Client: What exactly are you going to do? Groomer: I am going to trim her nails then give her a bath after I shave her down. That leads us to gloss over the fact that we will dry Fluffy before she goes home. Drying is a very important factor not only in producing a high quality groom, but is also key for higher tips and repeat business. When it comes to drying a cat, there are many choices of dryers on the market. Obviously, a salon would use different options than a house call groomer. I recommend groomers begin the drying process with a cage dryer for about
a variable speed knob. Groomers need to be able to slowly introduce the flow of air to the cat. Then the groomer needs full control over the air flow, slowly increasing the speed as the feline becomes confident, and decreasing the flow the moment the cat shows any signs of anxiety or stress.
CAGE DRYER I recommend groomers begin the drying process with a cage dryer for about 10 minutes. Cage dryers allow the drying process to begin while your hands are free. When choosing a cage dryer, it is important to choose one that recirculates the air without introducing heat to the drying process. It is also important that the feline has a way to get out of the direct flow of air when

lying in the cage. When a cat is in a cage, with the cage dryer attached to the door, it is important to monitor the feline for signs of stress and to verify that the dryer is not blowing hot air onto the cat. After a dryer has been in use for a period of time, the motor warms up. In turn, the air flowing from the recirculating dryer will feel warm or even hot. When the air starts to heat up, turn the dryer off and take it out of use for about an hour. When you turn it back on, the air should feel room temperature once again.
CONTAINMENT DRYING SYSTEM After using the cage dryer, nothing dries a cat better or is easier to use than a containment drying system that offers both drying and suction. This piece of equipment sur-

passes all other dryers in the area of cat drying for multiple reasons. First is groomer safety. The dead coat that has been loosened from the living coat by using a degreasing product in the bath is now ready to fly off the cat. That dead coat is not only going to make a mess by flying around your work environment, but if you are not wearing a mask, it will also fly all the way down to your lungs. Using a containment drying system will suction that dead coat away from your sinus passages and into a container for disposal. Another way a containment drying system keeps groomers safe is by confining the feline. If you begin to lose control of Fluffy, pull your arms out of the arm holes. Problem solved. Fluffy can’t go anywhere. If you can continue the groom, great. If you got in over your head and Fluffy was more aggressive than you expected (we have all been there), block the arm holes with a towel and the owner can retrieve Fluffy at pick—up. I also recommend this type of dryer because it speeds up the drying time, allowing the groomer to get the feline completely dry. The ratio of forced air to suction minimizes humidity far better than most of us can in our drying rooms. After a few minutes, the cat tends to pick a spot in the enclosure and settle in. At that point, you can focus on drying one area of the cat. After that area is dry, you are able to methodically increase the drying area until Fluffy is not only fluffy, but completely dry. The containment drying system is the ideal piece of equipment for the cat groomer. It contains all
the dead coat that is pushed out of the feline during the drying process, prevents the dead coat from entering your body through sinus passages, makes clean up easier and produces a dryer coat in less time.
FREE–STANDING VARIABLE SPEED DRYER All of us are not fortunate enough to have the space, finances or work environment for a containment drying system. As a house call groomer, I rely on my little 4— horsepower dryer. It has completed over 3,000 feline grooms and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. Besides variable speed, weight is an important factor for house call groomers. No matter your work environ-
ment or budget, the main feature to look for in a feline dryer is variable speed control. Variable speed controls are a built in safety system for the cat groomer. They allow the groomer to increase the speed as the cat is comfortable and decrease the speed at signs of stress or anxiety. ✂

Budgeting for
“
Retirement
Hi Michell. I attended some of your classes at the Northwest
Grooming Show! Thank you for teaching a class about retirement. I
am not very good at following a budget but you really got me thinking about how little time I have to get ready for retirement. How much money do I actually need?
H
i Gloria. My segment about retirement was disguised as a rejuvenation class. I am not sure I would have gotten attendance from the younger crowd if I called it “Preparing for retirement”. It’s sad, because it is so much easier if you start when you are young. I think that retirement is a necessity, not a luxury. Grooming is physical labor and the older you get, the less likely you will be physically able or mentally willing to do it. Now

is the time to save and invest! From 20–50 years old your body heals and recovers pretty well. Each day you tax your body a little and the next day you are all healed up and ready to go again. As you age, your cells slowdown in their recovery at a noticeable rate. In women, menopause plays a roll, but in all genders we simply regenerate slower as we age. It’s not that suddenly at 50 we slow down—it's more that at 50 we feel we have earned the right to admit it. Accumulated injuries and

genetics play a role in our physical limitations as well. Everyone needs enough money to support themselves for at least 30 years with no income, other than Social Security. I am basing this on retiring at 65 and living to be 95 years old. It is true that you may not live that long, but what if you do? And what if you accidentally live until you are 105—who pays for that? Just how much money does it take to pay for your life from 65 to 95 years old? Well, it’s at least a mil-

lion dollars! Three thousand dollars per month for 30 years equals one million, eighty thousand dollars. Of course, everyone’s budget is different. You may be planning to live with your adult children. Or maybe you have a spouse with a pension—lucky you! Very few groomers get a pension. Another idea is that you can have one million dollars in an account earning 5% and live off the interest. The interest, at 5%, is $4,166.67 per month. In this case, you still have a million dollars when the time comes for you to depart. Either way, the number is one million dollars! Maybe three or four thousand dollars per month is too little, or maybe it would be comfortable. Only you can make that determination based on your bills and desired lifestyle. Keep in mind that over the course of 30 years, there will be a lot of inflation. So, at first you might be comfortable, but toward the end of that 30 years you may struggle to pay your bills. This is why the latter plan would be a safer bet because you can dip into your mil if needed. Hopefully your home is paid off or, at the very least, your living arrangements are taken care of or factored into your retirement budget. Your home will need updating and repairs in those 30 years. Some of your medical bills will not be covered by Medicare and therefore your supplemental Medicare insurance. Not to mention, you will most likely need a new car in those 30 years. The list goes on as life goes on. At 50 years old the IRS allows you to invest a slightly larger amount into your various IRAs. They call these catch–up contributions. Absolutely take advantage of this if possible. So, imagine at 50 years old your body is struggling to work full– time as a groomer, yet the anxiety of retirement approaching is ever present. The government now says you can invest even more, yet you

find it hard to earn the way you did when you were 35 years old. Maybe you could groom 6–10 dogs per day then, but now you find it hard to recover from 6. Don’t underestimate the power of a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise is the key to good health. It seems counter intuitive, with grooming being such a physical job, one might think that exercise is already accomplished in the course of the day. Not so. Cardiovascular exercise combats heart disease, lowers cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, regulates blood sugar, reduces asthma symptoms, regulates weight, strengthens the immune system and reduces the risk of falling. Thirty minutes of moderate cardio five times per week may help keep you grooming for years to come. Also,

you are what you eat. A healthy diet will help your cells regenerate so that you can continue to produce haircuts that will carry you to retirement. If you start saving and investing at 20 years old, $22,222.22 is the amount per year to save for your million dollars. This equals $1,851.85 per month, and this is assuming you will work until you are 65. At 30 years old, the number is $28,571.42 per year. At 40 years old it is $40,000.00, and at 50 years old it is $66,666.66. Keep in mind that there is much interest to be earned, so maybe you could cut a few thousand dollars off of that number each year. Plus, it compounds, so the more money you have invested or saved, the more interest you earn. I find that 30—50 years old seem to be the most productive
grooming years for most groomers. These are the years to pack the money away! Why not save while you are young so that when your body slows down, you can groom part–time and still be on track for your million–dollar retirement. The price of your services must include the cost of retirement! Our industry is grossly under-priced. In many cases, it is not all about low prices, but also bad spending habits. Consider half of your retirement could be money that is otherwise spent unnecessarily and the other half is paid for by a price increase. Over the course of 30 years, a groomer who grooms 6 dogs per day will groom about 54,600 pets. In order for those pets to pay a half a million dollars toward your retirement, the owner needs to increase each pet’s price so that you make an additional $10.00 per pet. The price increase also needs to include appropriate compensation to the owner’s retirement figure. The owner’s required price increase depends on many factors. In order for your prices to exceed your competition’s prices, your skills must exceed your competition’s skills. Certification is a great place to start! Work hard to be the best in your area so that you can save for your retirement with relative ease. Also, when creating a budget, retirement must be one of the primary expenses from day one. I am glad that you have been awakened to the monumental task of preparing for retirement. Get started! —Michell ✂

BONE DRY:
FOR THE PET GROOMING SALON E by Lynne Allen e
Today’s dryers are very diverse and there are many options to choose from, making it easy to find the perfect fit for your grooming needs.
T
here are three basic drying systems; cage drying, force drying and stand drying. Today’s manufacturers offer a variety of dryers and accessories to help groomers work more productively. Dryers are not a “one–size–fits–all” type of product. Picking the best dryer for your business takes time and effort.
Cage dryers come in heated
and non–heated options. Heated cage dryers are the more dangerous option and they should be monitored very closely or not used at all. They can quickly overheat the pet, especially short–nosed breeds, and this can result in a disastrous situation. Heated dryers don’t fluff dry well and tend to produce a stringy coat that needs to be fluffed before finishing, which is time consuming. A statically–charged coat may also be a result of heated drying, making it

difficult to finish a pet without using an anti–static spray. If you use a heated cage drying option, always dry in open cages to sufficiently ventilate hot air. Also, make sure your equipment is in perfect condition, especially the timers, and keep hair off the heating elements. Check pets being dried often during the drying process to ensure they are not overheated. Natural air, non–heated cage dryers use room temperature air

with strong airflow to dry and fluff the coats quickly and safely. Usually there is no need for re–fluffing the coat before finishing. If you have a cooler environment you can use a separate portable heat source, such as a radiator heater, in the vicinity of the dryer to warm the air and produce a faster drying time. Non–heated dryers are most efficient with a 1 horsepower motor operating at 3500 plus CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute). CFM is a measurement of air volume. Utilizing a powerful, non–heated cage drying system can save you time and help your salon be more productive. My first experience with a non–heated cage drying system was amazing! Every month we bathed Brutus, a very large Newfoundland. It usually took us 2+ hours to dry him. We had received our new non– heated dryer for salon testing. The dryer was used without hoses, and after 45 minutes, Brutus was completely dry—feathers, rear, tail, feet, everything! Brush, bandana, cologne, out the door in 45 minutes for $150/ groom—now that’s efficient!

Some dryers function with more power than others at 2HP, 4HP or 8HP. When comparing specs, you will notice FPM (Feet Per Minute), a measurement of air speed. You will also note CFM air volume. The easiest way to compare dryers is to find out what the CFM is at the mouth of the dryer and what the FPM is at the nozzle. The higher these readings are, the better the blowing power. Another area of concern is noise levels. Dryers are the number one

cause of hearing loss for the grooming professional. The reason for this is high dBA, or decibel levels. For a complete breakdown of proper dBA levels and the time staff is allowed in a noisy workplace, visit OSHA Safety Standards: www.osha.gov/SLTC/ noisehearingconservation. Dryers are now available with noise dampening technology which decreases dBA. High noise levels can cause hearing issues for pets as well, and produce a stressful environment resulting in agitated pets and people. Wear hearing protection and put cotton balls in the ears of the pets being dried, or use a Happy Hoodie. Keep in mind, the noise bounces off metal tubs and cages and can increase the dBA levels in the salon considerably. Noise dampening ceiling panels can be installed which help with whole salon noise. Force dryer motors automatically run warm due to the nature of the motor. The more powerful the motor is, the hotter the dryer gets. There is no need for an additional heating element in a quality force dryer. Too much heat from a high velocity airflow can injure delicate skin on pets. Typically, force dryer motors are the same basic motor used in vacuum cleaners, just turned around to blow outward. Vacuum cleaner motors are meant to be used at short intervals. Some force dryers will wear out quickly when used at longer intervals such as cage drying. I recommend using a force dryer without nozzles around a pet’s face or ears. Eye injuries frequently happen due to the powerful air speed generated from the use of a nozzle.
STAND DRYERS Stand dryers generate gentle, quiet, warm airflow with heat and power easily controlled and adjusted.

Stand dryers are considered a finishing dryer and do not have the power like a force dryer to blow out undercoat or water. They are essential when you need both hands on a fidgety pet. They are a hands–free alternative to using a force dryer at the table. They do a great job of straightening and fluffing a coat and can be used while brushing. Stand dryers are considered a finishing dryer and do not have the power like a force dryer to blow out undercoat or water. They are essential when you need both hands on a fidgety pet. Some pets are afraid of the noise and feel of a force dryer but are fine with a stand dryer. Stand dryers are not great cage
dryers as they can also get too hot and need to be monitored closely. The thing I dislike the most about stand dryers are the legs. Falling over these legs too many times got me the name of “Big Foot” around my salons. In this groomer’s opinion, stand dryers have a place in our industry and the current manufacturers are not addressing this need and improving an old design that has needed updating for years. Finally, be aware—the arm of a stand dryer is heavy and if it falls on the
pet, it can cause injury. Always be cautious when using dryers. Keep them in good condition, use ear protection and always use the proper outlets for your dryer type or a fire could be the result. Also remember that hot dryers will make skin conditions worse and heat will increase toxic fumes from flea treatments. And be sure to purchase from a reputable manufacturer and adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions. Happy drying! ✂

ALL THINGS PAW

UNDERSTANDING
Pododermatitis
Interdigital AND
Furuncles
I admit I have a foot fetish. Really, a paw fetish. Ok, I love dog feet. I love to watch the pads squish out when they walk and am very aware of the individual mannerisms of each pet I see; how they hold their paws and how they use them in a conversation.
M
any of the paws I see are sore, hurt and/ or terribly damaged, and helping them heal is one of my greatest passions. As groomers, we see our fair share of swollen feet, cysts on pads and chronic swelling that defies all attempts to make them better. Combined with the thorough workup and diagnosis from a veterinarian, there are topical treatments, methods and products that can help alleviate the discomfort of affected dogs. In
44

order to tailor the most effective treatment, one must understand the categories of the issue itself. We will go over the basic topical therapeutic method of treatment and the different changes that can be made to the regimen steps for underlying and secondary infections. As there are many systemic issues that may have cysts and/or furuncles on the feet as a symptom, this article will simply define the terms and suggest therapeutics that help to soothe these painful conditions of the canine paw.
GroomertoGroomer.com
PODODERMATITIS Pododermatitis or interdigital cysts, which are filled with fluid, are related to the bristly hair between the toe pads and are believed to be caused by the hair keratin being forcefully pushed into the skin by the movement of the dog, by walking on graveled and rough terrain or by injury to the webbing between the toes. The broken hairs or the foreign object, such as foxtail seed, are then suspended in the foot tissue which cause inflammation, itching and may
lead to secondary infections. Foxtail seed heads and other types of objects can sometimes burrow into the foot or other area of the body and travel, making a travel track inside the body and possibly introducing bacteria that can cause a secondary infection.
INTERDIGITAL FURUNCLES Interdigital Furuncles are a neoplastic hardening or thickening of the webbing and pad tissue of the paw. This is due to a deep bacterial infection that may or may not have origins at the affected site. This issue can be singular or a symptom of a systemic disease which is why a proper diagnosis by a vet is so important. The vet may use different diagnostic tools such as skin scrapes, cytology, follicle plucking, culturing of bacteria or biopsy to determine the cause of the swelling and the nature of the inflammation in the paw or paws.
Pododermatitis causes inflammation, itching and may lead to secondary infections.
TOPICAL TREATMENTS Topical treatments can help soothe and help alleviate the pain, itching and discomfort of pets who are affected by furuncles or cysts. While the regimen is similar for both types of paw problems, there are small differences when infection is present. The basic treatment consists of a drawing mask or soak, cleansing the paw/s with an appropriate shampoo, and creating a conditioning cream to support the skin and provide minerals and nutrients to the cells. Epsom salt soaks are a good way to draw out offending infections and objects that are embedded in the skin. This is a good way to “open” the skin and prepare it to receive the cleanser. You might opt for a clay mask mixture, keeping in mind that the darker clays like green bentonite pull the hardest, in which you could mix oils and minerals.

Ozone soaks are becoming more popular as veterinary studies have confirmed that this is an effective treatment for inflammation, and is anti–bacterial, anti–fungal and anti– viral by nature with the by product of the ozone being pure oxygen. There are many low–cost ozone machine options on the market today and
manufacturers offer several models depending on how you would like to administer the ozone. Ozone can be used in any step of the regimen but, in my opinion, is best used in the cleansing step. Cleansers might include shampoos that are clarifying, limited ingredient for sensitive skin or con-
tain antibacterial and/or antifungal properties in the cases that have secondary infections. The last step is a balsam that contains conditioner, minerals, nutrients and in the case of secondary infection, anti–bacterial or anti–fungal ingredients. So, the only time you would use “medicated” ingredients or products is when infection is present. This process should be performed weekly until the skin responds. Lengthen the interval of the treatment by a week at a time until you find the proper interval for the individual pet so that comfort can be maximized. Caring for precious dog feet is a great act of compassion and well worth your time when you have clients with pets that are suffering with this painful condition. ✂ References: 1.Bajwa, Jangi. “Canine pododermatitis.” The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne vol. 57,9 (2016): 991-3. 2. xperts agree, you can’t achieve an excellent groom unless the dog is beautifully cleaned and correctly dried. The drying process is an important aspect of our job, but it can also present some very real dangers to the pet. It is too frequent that reports of drying–related injuries or deaths are disclosed. Here are some steps to take to make sure that the pets in your care stay

safe while being dried:
1
Use your dryers in the way that they were intended to be used. Different types of dryers are designed for specific purposes. For instance, stand dryers are made to produce hotter air (sometimes 130 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) than heated cage dryers do because they are designed to be used on a pet which is being worked on in the
GroomertoGroomer.com
open air. A stand dryer’s temperature is monitored when it is being used as intended because the groomer’s hands and arms are exposed to the air flow while they are brushing and fluffing the dog. The nozzle directing the warm air is constantly being moved as the groomer works and the heated air is also dissipating into the open room. However, many groomers use stand dryers pointed into closed cages to dry
pets. This is a dangerous practice. A dog’s normal body temperature is 100.5–102.5F. If air heated to 130F or more is being directed at a pet in an enclosed cage, that pet can quickly become overheated, or suffer burns to their skin. Minimize the time that a pet is being machine dried by using absorbent towels to remove as much water as possible from the coat before drying. Use specially made sprays that help dogs dry quicker. They work by disrupting the molecular bond of water on hair so that moisture is quickly pushed off the hair shafts. If you use cage dryers, consider using styles that do not have a heating element. The air will be warmed a few degrees by the heat of the motor but will remain close to room temperature. If heated dryers are used, they should only be operating when there are trained personnel in the room to monitor the pet. Make sure you and any employees know the signs of heat stress. Heated cage dryers should not be used on enclosed cages, or cages draped with towels to block air flow. They should be used only on cages that are open to the air to ensure the pet does not become overheated. Heated cage dryers should only be used if they are properly maintained and if the timer is functional. Placing individual thermometers in cages where heated dryers are used is an excellent safety feature. You will be able to tell at a glance if the pet’s environment is too warm. Understand how pets regulate their body temperature. Dogs and cats do not cool their bodies as humans do, by perspiring, but rather by panting to bring cool air through their moist mouths and airways. They produce extra saliva when they are too warm, and this helps cool the breath when the saliva evaporates as the dog inhales and exhales. This makes it clear that, if

Using a dehumidifier in the area where pets are being dried will help coats dry faster. Less time being dried is safer for the animals, while providing healthier air quality for humans, too.
the air the dog is breathing in is too warm and moist—as it can be in a drying cage, the dog can easily become overheated. A wonderful alternative for those who choose to cage dry pets is opting to use fans instead of dryers. The fans provide constant movement of room temperature air over the animal, opening the coat and increasing the rate at which water evaporates. As long as the air in the grooming environment is warm enough to prevent chilling, this can be an excellent option. Cool drinking water should be available to dogs which are being cage dried. Heated cage dryers should never be used on muzzled pets or short–nosed (brachycephalic) breeds such as Pugs, Shih Tzu’s, Persian cats, etc. Extreme care should be used when using heated cage dryers on pets that are very young, elderly or suffering from breathing difficulties. High velocity dryers are a gift to groomers, but they offer some safety concerns. This type of dryer works by moving large volumes of air through the animal’s fur to physically push the water off and away from the hair shafts. Both the sounds from the motor and the noise created when the air meets the pet and surfaces around it are loud. Protect the animal’s sensitive ears with cotton, Happy Hoodies, or both. The pressure from high volume air can irritate skin that is already sensitive or compromised and can injure pets if it is blown into the eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, anus or genital area. Some elderly dogs have adverse reactions to high velocity dryers. Once a dog has a bad reaction to a high velocity dryer, they should not be exposed to them in the future, as it will most likely happen again.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A BAD LAW IS PROPOSED Summer is approaching, and customers are bringing in dogs for warm weather grooming and baths. Professional groomers pride themselves on quality pet care, and the last thing you want is to be out of compliance with a law that passed without your knowledge—or without your input.
A
t this busy time of year, it remains important to keep up–to–date on state and local legislation. In the last several years, the American Kennel Club (AKC) has monitored an increasing number of proposals at the state and local levels that seek to regulate groomers and grooming salons. Equally important are laws that may appear to affect only dog owners or breeders but could have a significant impact on you and other pet professionals. Currently, a hot topic in canine legislation is tethering. State bills and local ordinances have been introduced all across the U.S. that seek to ban or limit tethering. Some of these laws are written so broadly that they would

make it an animal cruelty offense to use a grooming noose. Other legislation that can have harmful unintended consequences for professional groomers include arbitrary engineering requirements for pet enclosures, which may include minimum sizes that would outlaw the use of the crates and cages that are commonly and humanely used by groomers. Some proposed laws would require that every enclosure must provide more than one foot—or some other arbitrary measurement—of space above the head of the tallest dog. Numerous proposed laws seek to outlaw stacked enclosures or cage banks, including those with impermeable barriers between each level. Titles or summaries of proposed
GroomertoGroomer.com
or enacted law typically do not include this level of detail. Likewise, when the media picks up on a story, they may also pick and choose what aspects of a bill to report on. This is why it’s crucially important for groomers and pet professionals to follow legislation themselves, have someone they can rely on to review legislation and let them know if proposals are being made locally or in their state that may impact their businesses.
WHAT YOU CAN DO WHEN PROBLEMATIC LAWS ARE INTRODUCED OR PASSED The best way for your lawmakers to understand your business and how legislation affects you is to hear directly from you—their constituents.
There is no more effective approach to impacting policy than the opportunity to meet and communicate personally and respectfully with policymakers before an issue arises. Lawmakers often hear from lobbyists and activists who seek to advance a particular agenda. Unfortunately, they hear less from groomers and pet professionals who are experts on working with and caring for animals. There is no more effective approach to impacting policy than the opportunity to meet and communicate personally and respectfully with policymakers before an issue arises. Few elected officials are grooming or animal experts. However, many will be called upon to make decisions regarding policies that directly affect grooming businesses and animals. Lawmakers
want to hear from expert constituents who can help them make the right decisions for their community. Unless they hear from you, they may rely on inaccurate resources or information, and they’re unlikely to know how to assist you. Animal rights activists may show photos of neglected animals trapped in tiny, dirty cages as “evidence” that small enclosures must be outlawed. As a counterpoint, you and other pet professionals must take time to explain your business practices and illustrate why you use crates, cages, properly calibrated dryers, grooming nooses, and
GroomertoGroomer.com
other humane and accepted equipment to ensure the comfort and safety of animals in your care. Get involved and demonstrate that you are reasonable, knowledgeable, and willing to assist. Volunteer to consult on the drafting of pet–related measures and to review drafts before they are finalized. The AKC Government Relations department is available to assist by providing analysis and commentary on proposed legislation impacting dogs. But what if a bad law has already passed? Laws can be amended and laws can be repealed, especially when

SUCCESSFUL ADVOCACY When legislation is discussed or introduced, learn about the background of the measure and who initiated it. Understand that if a law is proposed in response to a tragedy, such as “Bijou’s Law” that was discussed in last month’s issue, you may find that some may view your profession unfavorably. Continue to practice kindness and stick to fact–based information if dealing with emotion–driven issues. When you already have a trusted relationship with your local lawmakers, they will want your input, and expressing your concerns and offering appropriate solutions is a lot easier. If you took a civics class in high school or college, you may be familiar with how state bills become law. Take time to also learn details of how laws are enacted in your state, county and city. A proposal must go through a series of steps: Each step represents an opportunity for you to get involved and to influence the content and outcome of a law. Contact your State representatives, or city or county clerk for information, to check the status of a proposed law, and to learn if and when a public hearing is scheduled. Here are some additional steps you

can take to be a successful advocate: • Form strategic alliances with like–minded groups, such as other pet industry professionals, veterinarians, boarding kennel operators, pet breeders, sportsmen and agricultural organizations. Don’t forget your customers! Happy customers can be excellent allies. Share mutually relevant information with your allies and ask them for their support. • Practice delivering concise and meaningful messages before you meet with legislators. If you sign up to speak at a community workshop or public hearing, you may only have 3 to 5 minutes to make your point. Use those minutes wisely. • Seek a seat on animal advisory boards. These opportunities may exist at the state and local levels. Find out the criteria and ask your governmental officials to consider you for these roles. Along with your résumé, provide information on your experience in working with animals and how professional groomers are a valuable resource for pet owners in your community. Get to know your lawmakers, learn the legislative process, work with allied groups and get prepared before problematic legislation arises. For resources and assistance, visit www.akcgr.org or contact the American Kennel Government Relations department at 919–816–3720 or doglaw@akc.org. ✂

he new location was a big hit with attendees, competitors and vendors alike. It provides the perfect setting for preserving the tradition and character that was originally instilled in the show by the late Jerry Schinberg, while still allowing for the newest and most progressive elements of the ever-changing grooming industry. This year we predict to see a record number of vendors, as well as attendees, which will follow the trend of previous years where the show grew each year – making it the largest grooming show in the Midwest. Some of the highlights of the show include GroomTeam-sanctioned contests, the Rescue Round-up and Abstract Design Runway competitions, and the “Knock Your Smocks Off ” smock design contest – which is unique to only the All American show. Additionally, you will get a top-notch education with over 60 educational seminars to choose from. With everything from mobile grooming to cat grooming to business topics, even the most sea-

soned grooming professional is sure to learn something new! Some of the newest and most popular programs include “The Rosetta Bone: Decoding Canine Social Dynamics” with Khris Berry, “Stylized Poodles in a Flash” with Blake Hernandez, “Asian Style Trims for the Everyday Groomer” with Joshua Morales and “Salon Sanitation Certificate Course” with Corina Stammworthy, among many others. Following the Abstract Design Runway competition and “Knock Your Smocks Off” contest on Saturday, will be the All American party – free to all attendees. This is always a highlight of the show, as it gives groomers a chance to let loose and make new friends with those who share their passion for the grooming industry. So if you’ve never been to a grooming show, or make it a yearly tradition to attend – be sure to put the All American Grooming show on your calendar for August 8–11, 2019—because this is one you will not want to miss! Groomer to Groomer • Vol 38 Ed 6 • June 2019
"When my parents started Metropolitan Vacuum Cleaner Co. 80 years ago they had just $50 and an American Dream. It is very rewarding to be living that dream and producing quality, durable products right here in the U.S. We are very proud of how far MetroVac has come." When MetroVac was founded in 1939 by Israel and Pearl Stern, their sole business was rebuilding and distributing vacuum cleaners. That would change when their son, Jules Stern, joined the business on a full–time basis in 1951 and helped introduce three unique industry innovations. In 1957 MetroVac unveiled the first 110–volt handheld vacuum cleaner. In 1964 they built the first 12–volt automotive handheld vacuum cleaner that plugged into the cigarette lighter of cars. And in 1970 the Metro Duo–Volt, the world's first, and still only, dual voltage hand vacuum that’s designed to work in the home and the car. In 1968, in order to meet the production demand that resulted from the enormous success of its products, MetroVac moved to a 32,000 square–foot facility in Suffern, N.Y. Continuing in the family tradition, Jules' son, Kenneth Stern, joined the business as Vice President of National Sales in 1974 and his brother, David Stern, joined as Vice President of Marketing in 1984. The multi–generational Stern family has ushered in a period of company expansion into di-

verse industries while working together to introduce innovative products. MetroVac still produces the housewares line that gave the company its name but has become an international manufacturer of a wide range of air–moving products. With divisions in the automobile, motorcycle, pet, housewares, electronics and athletic industries, their impressive lineup of products continues to grow. This growth in sales and their ever–increasing lineup of new market–responsive products had outstripped the capacity of the company's plant in Suffern, N.Y. which had been their headquarters since 1968. So, in 2013 manufacturing and headquarters moved to a 60,000– foot facility in Oakland, N.J. The new location has given MetroVac the physical space it requires to continue its enormous growth and has greatly improved efficiencies in raw material purchasing, handling and fabrication, pre– assembly, packaging, warehousing and distribution. "Throughout our years of tremendous growth and expansion into multiple industries, we have stayed true to our mission of providing the highest quality, American–made products for our customers," said Jules Stern. "We look forward to continuing this tradition and celebrating many more milestones with our customers. We are working on some exciting new endeavors and are hopeful for what the future has in store."
