GROOMING BUSINESS BASICS
by Khris Berry
SALON SOAP: HANDLING
and IN THE SALON We’ve all heard the old rhyme: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, if you’ve ever spent much time in a salon atmosphere, you may disagree with the wisdom this rhyme imparts.
T
he daily work life in a grooming salon can become routine; dogs check in, dogs get groomed, dogs go home. Pet stylists spend long hours in the company of their coworkers, often standing in one place for long periods while they complete their work. This dynamic can become a breeding ground where deeply rooted relationships are forged through conversations and sharing of

life experiences. It can also become an opportunity for the negative aspects of informal communication to foster gossip and drama. Informal communication is part of every business culture. It provides an opportunity for employees to learn about how the company works and bond with one another over common themes. Chit chat is both common and vital in a salon setting. It allows

information to be passed between coworkers that improves their skills and clients’ experiences. Informal communication accounts for the intrinsic knowledge that is gained over time about how your business “does things”. As grooming shop owners, we rely on it to help train and educate our employees over time. It helps build teamwork and a thriving culture within your workplace.

Enter Negative Nancy (sorry to every Nancy I know, you aren’t all negative!). When the ideas being shared are of a negative nature, a salon can become derailed in a very short time. Some would say it’s human nature—negativity can creep into our moods and become part of our conversations before we realize it. In the dynamic group cultures which exist in grooming salons, negative speech and attitudes can become disruptive and result in the loss of clients, employees, and profit. Due to the serious side effects associated with gossip and drama, I find it’s best to handle all situations and parties involved quickly. Time is not always your friend when dealing with Salon Soap. When assessing how to best clean up a situation in a salon setting, I identify the cast and crew of the Salon Soap production. In most cases, since most salons are relatively small, it will include your entire staff. I follow a few ground rules when dealing with issues such as gossip and drama to help ease my staff through these episodes with humility and professionalism: 1. Address all situations regarding negativity, gossip, and drama immediately and in a group setting. 2. Learn to assume the role of mediator. Your job as mediator will be to help conversation flow between the parties who have a disagreement while enforcing basic rules of courtesy. If you cannot mediate a situation without bias, ask another person to fill the role of mediator for you. 3. Call everyone together and hold a group meeting. Don’t cater to private meetings or discussions regarding the situation. Your staff will need to speak to you and their coworkers in a group setting. 4. Identify ground rules which allow everyone to speak freely without

with a Maltese Mix than a confrontational coworker. I let everyone know it’s normal and acceptable to feel overwhelmed handling the situation publicly. “We are all in this together,” is a common theme. 6. State the root of the drama or gossip and begin listening. I ask my staff for courtesy and respect with one another and I model that behavior. Most people respond to quiet, calm communication. If the conversation begins to become heated, it’s time to restate the rules of courtesy. 7. By holding open and honest communication sessions regularly, and immediately when a problem occurs, your coworkers will learn that misunderstandings often lead to issues. They will learn that your salon has an open communication plan. I find that Negative Nancy’s do not like to be in the spotlight and will typically curtail their negative speak after a few group meetings. 8. If you have a Negative Nancy who continues to be at the center of drama or gossip, you can let her know that you will not tolerate negativity. You can ask her to leave her negative comments and mood at the door. My experience has been that even Nancy learns to enjoy her work environment more fully when she is required to have a positive attitude.

PetQuest will boast a special game show night with amazing prizes as well as puppy yoga to benefit local rescue groups, which is sure to create a buzz of excitement for all attendees. This expo will be the most involved, fun and exciting event of its kind! “PetQuest is my favorite show of the year. The accommodations are very pet friendly. BEHAVIOR CLIPS by Gary Wilkes
From a dog’s point of view, obeying a command boils down to two simple problems; “What do you want me to do?” and “What do I get, if I do it?” To put this in human terms, the dog needs information about what to do and a motivation why he should do it.
14
WHY?
WHAT?
Before you can teach your dog anything, you have to satisfy the “why” part of the equation. Learning can be trying, tedious and difficult. Without sufficient motivation, the dog is likely to get bored and trot off in search of a wayward cat. When you discover the things that will motivate your dog to work, you can start connecting them to “what” you want the dog to do.
In the early stages of learning a behavior, a dog needs clear information signals that mark which part of the behavior “caused” success or failure. Each successful repetition links a little more information to the correct behavior—like placing another piece in a picture puzzle. If the information is sloppy or ambiguous, it will take more repetitions for the dog to sort out the “Big Picture.” If your information sig-

nal is slow or poorly timed, the wrong information is attached to the behavior—like trying to insert a piece from a different puzzle. With an effective information signal, the percentage of correctly applied pieces increases, and the puzzle is solved faster.
If your information signal is slow or poorly timed, the wrong information is attached to the behavior—like trying to insert a piece from a different puzzle.
PRAISE AS AN INFORMATION SIGNAL Historically, the information signal of choice for dog trainers has been verbal praise. While it is natural for humans to use words to identify good behavior, dogs rely more on the timing of the signal than the conceptual meaning behind the words. Since the dog doesn’t really understand English, the signal you choose to mean “good boy” is arbitrary. The results you get, however, are dictated by the dog’s ability to tie a given signal to a behavior.
To get an idea of how this works, call your dog and start a little game of fetch. Pick an arbitrary point about half way across the room, and put a hand towel on the spot. Now, toss the ball so that it will go beyond, but directly over, the towel. As your dog runs toward the ball, he will necessarily pass over the towel. As your dog’s nose passes over the towel, say “good boy”. Don’t worry if your dog doesn’t respond to the words, yet. Just pay close attention to exactly how far the dog travels between the time you start to say “good” and the time you finish “boy”. Now let’s try it again. This time, instead of using praise, clap your hands together just once to mark the behavior. If you watch closely, you may see the biggest advantage to an instantaneous clap—and the biggest down-

Whether you use a sight, sound or smell as your information signal, it must be easily recognized across the background sights, sounds and smells of the environment. side to using praise. When you used praise to mark the behavior, the dog traveled a full body length while you said “good boy”. By contrast, the clap marked the precise instant the dog’s nose crossed the towel. When you are using verbal praise, you can only approximate the instant the dog performs the correct part of the behavior. So, in our rug exercise, praise will allow you to tell the dog that there is a really important patch of rug in your house, about two to three feet in diameter. The same dog, sensing an instantaneous signal, can identify that there was something important about a patch of rug about six inches in diameter. Within a few repetitions, the individual claps could identify a particular place and a particular posture, while the praise would still be working on the location. The point is that a faster information signal can enhance your dog’s speed in seeing the “big picture.”
"INFO" While it is obvious that an information signal must be quick, its speed is not the only criterion you must consider. Even clicker trainers occasionally forget that no single signal can work in every situation. Rather than being written in stone, the list of acceptable information signals is dependent on the physical abilities of the animal, the training task and environment. For instance, clickers and praise won’t work if the dog can’t hear them, which makes a whistle a better tool

for distance work. Likewise, hand signals are pretty useless if the dog is visually impaired or the behavior requires the dog to be looking away from the handler. Rather than thinking of specific signals, it is more useful to look at the criteria that dictate which signal works best at any given time. Here are four rules that can help you evaluate an “INFO” signal. I–Immediate: You must be able to present the signal in connection with the correct behavior. It is the timing of the signal that tells the animal WHICH behavior to remember. N–Noticeable: Whether you use a sight, sound or smell as your information signal, it must be easily recognized across the background sights, sounds and smells of the environment. If you are back lit, hand signals in front of your body will disappear inside your silhouette. If you are training in a room full of other trainers, you will have to modify the way you talk in order for your dog to distinguish your voice apart from all the others. F–Fast: In order to mark a behavior that may last a mere 1/10th of a second, you need a signal that can be delivered in 1/10th of a second. O–One of a kind: Unless your Info Signal is unique and consistent, you will force the animal to focus on the signal instead of focusing on the behavior. The idea is to prevent the dog from having to think about anything other than the information about the behavior. Once you get used to thinking in terms of these criteria, you can start
When training deaf animals, I use a fast hand signal as a “clicker”, the wink of a flashlight or the vibration feature of remote collar. Each of these decisions is based on the requirements dictated by the dog and the setting, rather than by a devotion to one signal over another. evaluating the signals you use to send information to your dog. For instance, for almost all serious training I use a clicker. It fits the INFO rules better than anything else I have found. That doesn’t mean I always use a clicker. When training at a distance, the clicker isn’t noticeable, so I use a whistle. If I don’t happen to have a clicker, I simply say “good”. Though the verbal info signal isn’t as fast as a clicker, it’s still immediate and one of a kind. When training deaf animals, I use a fast hand signal as a “clicker”, the wink of a flashlight or the vibration feature of remote collar. Each of these decisions is based on the requirements dictated by the dog and the setting, rather than by a devotion to one signal over another. The best place to start with clicker training is to realize that a clicker is merely a very precise, but limited construction tool. Clicker training isn’t magic, even if the results sometimes appear to be. Learning to use a clicker doesn’t mean you have to give up your knowledge of “what works” and “what doesn’t”, it merely uses your “dog smarts” in a slightly different way. The essence of clicker training is letting the dog’s behavior dictate your methods, rather than using the wrong tool at the wrong time. If you are willing to take a shot at it, hopefully the results will motivate you to continue using it. ✂

It seems to me that the world is mostly made up of two kinds of people; those who are naturally organized, and those who are not. Sadly, I fall into the latter category, while dearly wishing to belong in the former. eeping my workspace clean and organized is important to me, and when I recently asked other groomers about this topic, they said it’s important to them, too. Organized work space is a crucial component to how efficient we are in our work space. Professional organizers will tell you that the very best way to get control of your space is to get rid of things you do not need. This can be tricky, as many of us have trouble parting with things, even when they are items we rarely or never use. For example, one company I sometimes order shampoo

from very nicely includes many, tiny sample bottles of perfume with each order. Since most of my customers are not really into perfume, I carefully stash the precious little bottles and there they sit, taking up valuable real estate that should be designated for items that I actually use. Here are some helpful ideas for getting things organized in your grooming space: • Brutally thin out your tools. That slicker brush you’ve had since the ‘90’s, with bent teeth and a bad case of rust? Say goodbye. Your first round of edit-

ing your tools should consist of you throwing away anything that is damaged. Bent or broken teeth damage skin and coat, and have no business taking up space in your grooming area. Your next round should be putting tools that are perfectly good, but never used, in a box. We all have tools that we bought, thinking they’d be great, then realized they don’t work for us. That box should be donated. The third round should be for you to put the tools you use on just about every pet in one pile, and those you only use occasionally in another. Now, look at the tools in the first pile and find places

for them within easy reach of your work space. Think creatively; there are all kinds of containers you can use that are visually appealing as well as practical. I like vintage things. My “everyday” tools are stored in funky old wooden boxes I picked up at antique stores. You might like the sleek look of stainless steel kitchen or bathroom organizers. Check out places like The Container Store and Ikea for some fabulous storage solutions. • When it comes to big storage pieces to keep near your work station, you can take into consideration funky old bureaus or cabinets, modern mechanics tool chests, and everything in between. Peek at what human hair stylists are using, or buy any piece of furniture and make it your own by adding hooks, hanging baskets, or whatever strikes your fancy to make room for the tools you use the most. Just make sure that whatever you buy is well made and sturdy enough for the demands of a busy grooming business. • Let’s say that you (like me) have a small scissor addiction. Keep one or two of each type near your work space. For example, a set of long/short curves, long/short straights, a pair of chunkers and one pair of thinners. The rest can be safely stowed in a cabinet. The scissors you use regularly can be stored by hanging them from racks designed specifically for them, or you can get creative. I store mine in a vintage tool box. I filled the individual sections with dry beans, and they hold my scissors upright, preventing them from bumping into each other. When the beans get hairy/dirty, I toss them out and put in fresh. • Next, sort through your liquid products. The dematting, drying and scissoring sprays that you use constantly should be stored within easy reach. That great mousse you only use on the 2 drop–coated dogs whose owners manage to keep them in full coat
If you have items that you don’t care about, send them off in a donation box. If you have items you love, but realize they don’t all have to be out on display, pack some up and rotate them from time to time. Having open space in your work shop will lend a sense of peace and order. can be stashed for the rare days you need it. • Take a hard look at your decorative accents and knick–knacks. As you well know, these items tend to collect hair and dust and grime. Who has time to keep them all polished and looking lovely? Not most groomers I know. What can you pack away, leaving some “white space” in your work area? If you have items that you don’t care about, send them off in a donation box. If you have items you love, but realize they don’t all have to be out on
display, pack some up and rotate them from time to time. Having open space in your work shop will lend a sense of peace and order. • If you have a cabinet or closet to store things in, take careful measurements of the inside and keep them with you. Then when you shop for baskets/ bins/storage containers you will be able to see what will fit in your space and what won’t. • When organizing items that will be stored out of sight, look for smaller baskets and storage bins to corral
them, and separate them by category to make them easier to find. First aid items for pets and people should not be mixed in with shampoos and dematting aides. Give each category of item their own space. • Bonnie Peregoy (Bonnie’s Dog and Cat Grooming, Washington, DC) suggests that groomers invest in a good quality label maker (you can get a high–quality machine for under $50.) Clearly identifying bins and boxes will make finding things you are looking for oh–so–much easier.

Speaking of cords, you can get a grip on the tangle of them by gathering up the un–used section and cinching them with a rubber band or zip tie.
• Bonnie also suggests that groomers look up. She uses the highest rated extension cords, suspended from the drop ceiling in her shop, to power stand dryers. Keeping cords off the floor not only reduces clutter, it increases safety. • Speaking of cords, you can get a grip on the tangle of them by gathering up the un–used section and cinching them with a rubber band or zip tie. • Many groomers make use of peg board or slat walls in their work space. The advantage of these is that there are so many options for storage solutions, all ready–made and just waiting for you to choose what works best for you. • In the tub area, gallon jugs can take up a lot of space. Stylist, Leah Shirokoff suggests filling 16 ounce bottles with the shampoo you are going to be using that day, and keeping the bigger jugs stored out of the way. • Mobile groomers are forced to keep their clutter to a minimum because of the limited space their truck or trailer offers. Mary Oqendo says, “As a mobile groomer, I work by myself. I can’t ask someone to grab a scissor because it is out of reach. Nor can I waste time looking for something I know I have, but can’t remember exactly where it is. Being organized saves me time. And time is money.” Mary uses Tupperware type containers of all sizes to keep things in order. “The lids keep the hair out and each Tupperware contains specific items. Bows, unopened blades, combs, brushes and so forth.” By weeding out the tools and clutter you don’t need, and thoughtfully storing the items you do, you can make your work space more efficient as well as more attractive. ong and sharp nails can cause injuries to people, scratch floors and furniture—as well as cause dogs discomfort and even pain if the nails become too overgrown. Pet owners don’t like their dog’s nails to become overgrown any more than groomers do, but maintaining short nails on dogs has its challenges, especially if the only time the nails get trimmed is at grooming appointments every few months. Over time, long nails can change the structure of a dog’s paw and throw off their natural movement. If the nails continue to grow without maintenance, they can curl and grow into a dog’s pad, or splay out sideways and get caught easily on carpets or furniture, only to be painfully torn off. Long nails are not just a cosmetic concern, they are dangerous and uncomfortable for the animal. Some animals may naturally wear down their

Cutting the nails on some dogs is as easy as picking up a paw and trimming or Dremeling each nail, but there are too many dogs that do not take to nail care that easily. It is a challenge for groomers to trim and shape each nail on dogs that are pulling away or trying to bite. Some dogs just seem more sensitive about nail trims than others. The dog’s anatomy and structure might have something to do with the

way they protest when their paws are handled, but there are many other reasons as well. A dog that has had negative experiences with having his nails trimmed can become very difficult. In some cases, it just comes from a lack of experience. When there is no reinforcement history associated with nail trims, who could blame a dog for disliking such an awkward way of being handled? Let’s face it...it is kind of weird. As groomers, we can prevent some of the problems we face with dogs that misbehave during nail

trimming by reaching puppy owners and educating our clients, and providing creative solutions for at–home nail care. Giving clients homework to help their dogs become more comfortable with nail trims can be very helpful when it comes to making dogs less nervous about the procedure. The problem is, even if a dog loves having his paws handled when laying on the sofa, it doesn’t mean they will be fine for nail trims. We have to work with our clients so that they understand that dogs don’t generalize well, and that they can help their pet have stress–free nail trims, leaving the nails short and smooth with some work.
REACH PUPPY PARENTS Whenever possible, an important step we can take as groomers to give dogs a life of positive nail trims is to reach puppy owners before problems arise. If we can start working with a puppy when they are young, and get them comfortable with nail trims as well as all involved with grooming, we can prevent future problems. Offering workshops for puppy parents, sharing information with vets and rescues, and targeting puppy owners through marketing can help.

Young and old dogs can learn new things, and training behaviors that can be used in the grooming salon can transform the grooming experience for dogs as well as groomers. One thing that can help with grooming in general, including nail trims, is a focus–target. A focus–target is something that the dog learns to focus on during grooming. Instead of touching the target with his nose, the dog learns to watch the target, which can be set up a few feet from the dog. Any object can be used as the target. You could train the dog to focus

on a bowl or a cup, a lid, a snow globe or even a Rubik’s cube. The target itself does not matter, as it just gives the dog something to look at. One idea for a target is to use a cup with the dog’s treats in it so the reinforcement comes from the target. To train this behavior, move the target around a bit to get the dog to glance at it. Do not push the target into the dog’s face. Wave the target like a toy so the dog notices it on his own. As soon as he does, mark the behavior of making eye contact with the target by saying “good,” “yes” or using a clicker, and then feed the dog a reward. Repeat until the dog understands the game. You can then add duration and an end cue so the dog watches the stationary object until you tell him to look away. Once he understands the end cue, you will know that if he looks away before you give the cue during grooming, he might need a break from whatever you are doing. It’s also important to keep the focus time very short; focus for a few

seconds while you work on a paw and reward, for example. Examples of cues for this behavior are “focus” and “break.” The word “focus” starts it, and the word “break” ends it. This behavior gives the dog something to do while being handled, and eventually it can be used with nail trims. The dog’s eyes are on the target, keeping him distracted and keeping his head and body steady. If you have clients willing to give the focus– target a try, you can have them train it and bring the target to the dog’s grooming appointments. One important tip is to fully train the behavior before pairing it with nail trimming, and to pair the two very gradually so that the dog does not have a negative association with the focus–target.
ASSIGN PET OWNER HOMEWORK While handling a dog’s paws at home might be as easy as petting a dog behind the ears, handling a dog’s paws in a way that is more similar to how they will be handled for nail trims is more of a challenge. Show your clients the ways that you would hold the dog’s paw while trimming the nails. At home, clients can practice holding their dog’s paws, applying pressure to each individual nail with their fingers and holding nail trimmers next to each paw. Another thing that is easy to do at home is to pretend to clip the nails by holding something next to the nail that will make the same noise when clipped, such as an uncooked noodle. Instruct your client to pair all of these activities with rewards so the dog has a positive association with paw and nail handling.
PAIR NAIL CARE WITH THE DOG’S FAVORITE ACTIVITIES If your clients are finding it difficult to make time for working with their dogs on nail care training, or

they just don’t think of it between grooming appointments, have them try pairing other activities with training for nail care. Keeping a pair of nail clippers next to the dog’s leash and food bowl, for example, will serve as a reminder to spend a few minutes handling the dog’s paws and nails, as well as holding the nail clippers next to each paw during everyday activities like going for walks and feeding time.
to a block of wood. To train a dog to use it on cue, put a treat under it and encourage the dog to get it. Most dogs will use their paws. As soon as the dog makes contact with the scratch pad, a reward should be given. Soon, the dog can learn to use the scratch pad on cue. The scratch pad should only be used as a trained behavior with human supervision so that the dog does not over file his nails.
TRAIN THE DOG TO FILE HIS OWN NAILS
USE A NAIL FILE FOR AT–HOME MAINTENANCE
A dog’s front nails can become sharp even if they are kept short. This is a problem for many pet owners. To keep a dog’s front nails short and smooth, you can show your clients how to train their dog to file his own nails. Don’t worry—this sounds much more complex than it really is. A scratch pad can be made by sticking sandpaper
Keeping the nails short between grooming appointments is very helpful for both the groomer and the pet owner. When pet owners prefer to leave nail trimming to the professionals, they can still maintain their dog’s nails between appointments using a nail file. When the nails are already cut short, a nail file is a great

way to gently smooth out the nails and keep them short between trimming, and dogs can get used to having their nails filed with practice. Talking with our clients about the problems we face as groomers is the only way we can create changes. As groomers, we see dozens of dogs that are difficult for nail trims on a weekly basis. When we can’t get the nails short enough because the vein has grown with the long nail due to lack of maintenance, or the dog is too difficult, we want our clients to understand what can be done to prevent these problems. Working with clients and providing them with the tools and education that will help them with their pet makes our jobs as groomers even more rewarding. At the end of the day, we are doing more than grooming pets and sending them home. We are becoming a part of their lifelong care. ✂

s there a difference? The human medical field is finally legitimizing the use of medical marijuana to treat chronic illnesses and disease. More and more states are going ahead and authorizing medical marijuana dispensaries. But what about pets? The American Veterinary Medical Association has not yet taken an official stand. However, it is under “discussion.” For the most part it is a moot point, as veterinarians cannot legally prescribe medical marijuana even if they wanted to. Marijuana is still classified as a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency). What if there was a viable alternative that is readily available and an entire industry is being built up around it? There is, and it’s hemp! Hemp is the same plant species as marijuana. They are both Cannabis sativa L. The difference lies in the variety. Hemp has been used historically in the manufacturing sector to make rope and textiles, while marijuana was bred for the intoxicating resinous glands that grow on the flowers and leaves.

THERE ARE 3 KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HEMP & MARIJUANA: 1. HEMP DOES NOT CONTAIN THC Any, if at all present, trace amounts are removed during production. THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol. It’s the THC that’s responsible for the psychological effects of marijuana, hence the Scheduled 1 Controlled Substance labeling. While THC has many medical benefits, it is not the only part of the plant that has medicinal properties. Both marijuana and hemp also produce CBD. CBD is Cannabidiol. CBD has medicinal benefits be-

cause it binds to the body’s endocannabinoid system through the CB1 and CB2 receptors found in every tissue. The endocannabinoid system is connected to the brain, central nervous and peripheral systems, as well as maintains and manages homeostasis within the body, neural activity, pain, memory, emotions, carcinogenesis, and embryonic development. As these binders are throughout the body, it accounts for the wide range of therapeutic properties. Basically it does what the body needs it to do. The medical benefits of CBD can help with a wide range of conditions ranging anywhere from seizures to diabetes, to pain management to arthritis to cancer, and so forth. Dogs have the highest concentration of CB receptors of any mammal, which is why dogs are more sensitive to the effects of both THC and CBD.
2. HEMP IS LEGAL And thus an industry is born. CBD is made into treats, oils, topical creams, and capsules. But not all CBD products are created equally. As with any new booming market, there are companies looking to cash in by producing it as cheaply as possible. They use industrial grade hemp, grown for quantity using factory farming, pesticides, and fertilizers. On the other hand, there are companies dedicated to the well being of your pet and spend thousands on research and development of different strains to pinpoint specific chronic conditions, and grow organically. “This is a growing, fluid field. There have been great strides in developing particular strains of hemp for specific ailments. Many varieties of hemp are like a fine wine. You pair a precise strain to the corresponding condition. Or you can
choose to go with a ripple. Your choice.” Donna Walker RVT — South Bark, San Diego, CA It can be purchased online, in stores, as well as transported across state lines. Nothing in the pet industry is well regulated, so buyer beware. Research the companies to ensure you are getting what you pay for.
3. TOXICITY While both the live plant of hemp and marijuana are toxic to dogs and cats in any form, CBD derived from hemp is safe. However, dosing is done based on the pet’s weight. THC from medical marijuana can accelerate a pet’s heart rate to a dangerous level and should never be used without veterinary consultation. As with any substance, any pet can have an allergic re-
sponse and go into anaphylactic shock. While a pet can overdose from medical marijuana, it is not the case with CBD. For those who use medical marijuana or indulge, it is important to make sure pets have no access to any part of the plant. One of my dogs ended up in the ER because my neighbor’s kid threw a blunt in my yard when his parents came home. “ Despite the fact that dogs and cats have a more rapid digestive system, it still takes about an hour after eaten to fully work. Be prepared for that so you do not give too much. The side effects of over medicating are simply sleepiness.” Donna F. Walker RVT – South Bark, San Diego, CA
clients rather than stock it. It’s a matter of time before other distributors come on board. As I don’t stock, in order to educate my clients on the benefits of CBD oil, I leave flyers with information in their homes. A shop could have information at check in for the client to look over before picking up their pet later in the day. We may never need to wait until the AVMA or the states decide on the legalities on medical marijuana as long as CBD is available for our pets. Even though the cost seems high, it is a small price to pay to help manage a pet’s chronic medical conditions. You too, can be your grooming client’s “dealer.” ✂
CBD oil and treats are expensive. As such, I take orders from my

Growling and hissing after a groom happens quite often in multiple cat households. Since the feline’s strongest sense is smell, anytime one cat smells different, the other cats in the home won’t “recognize” her. in the home won’t “recognize” her. While this seems odd to us, it is simply because the freshly groomed cat smells different. The cat that was just groomed was not only handled by people the other household cats are not familiar with, if she was also given a bath, her natural scent was removed. Plus, the cat now also has the scent of the products used during the groom on her coat and skin. All these factors make the feline smell much different than her “normal self”, in turn causing an unwelcoming reac-

human and is about 1/20th the size. Scent receptors number 200 million for cats compared to 5 million for humans. Felines also have a sniff mechanism and vomeronasal organ that are not found in other mammals. All of which adds up to make the house cat a small animal who has an incredible sense of smell. The olfactory nerves, scent receptors, vomeronasal organ and sniff mechanism are all needed to aide cats in recognizing members of their own social group, reproduce and find food. This complex orchestra of nerves, receptors, organs, and mechanisms are documented as being highly developed at birth. A cat’s survival is based on smell until they are three weeks of age. This complex system will allow a newborn to find and return to a preferred nipple, react to offensive odors by day two, and by about week five help the cat distinguish between edible and inedible items. What exactly is an olfactory nerve? To oversimplify, it is a fibrous nerve in the back and top of the nasal passage that directly transfers nerve impulses (regarding odors) to the brain to convey the sense of smell. If damaged, these nerves will not always regenerate. Scent receptor proteins can be quite a confusing subject. Out of the three types of this protein, V1R is what makes a mammal separate one scent from another. While humans only have two strands of V1R, felines have thirty which allow them to distinguish far more scents than even canines with nine stands of V1R. The vomeronasal organ is an organ found in the top of the mouth in cats. This organ aides in processing smell and connects to the area of the brain that recognizes other cats and members of the social group, feeding and reproduction behaviors.

The sniff mechanism is a real function of cats that helps them to understand scents in their environment. Have you ever observed a cat appear to be breathing with her mouth open for a few seconds? That is the cat using her sniff mechanism. She has closed off her breathing while taking a series of short sniffs to fill up her nasal passage, allowing the scent molecules to interact with the scent receptors and hairs of the olfactory nerves. This helps the cat identify behaviors of the other cats in her social group. In summary, due to the unique structure, function and mechanics of a feline nasal cavity, added to the purpose of scent in felines (mating, social interaction and feeding), when a cat who doesn’t smell like she usually does comes home, the other cats in her social circle go on high alert to protect their environment and feeding rituals often causing the freshly groomed cat to be viewed as an outsider.
SOLUTIONS The felines in the home will return to normal in 24 to 48 hours. However, if the client is asking for immediate solutions, or you feel better giving options, there are things that can be done to help the cat readjust to the home environment. In my business, I suggest rubbing something that has a strong scent of the owner on the cat’s coat. Worn socks or undergarments, pillowcases or used bath towels will work well. Here is how to make Hissy Fits profitable to your business. The bottom line is one cat smells like your grooming environment and the others do not. You have two options; both will increase your bottom line. First, suggest all cats are groomed on the same day. This solves the problem in a few ways. All the cats smell the same, all the cats know where the

other cats were and what happened to them. However, the key here is that when all the cats return home, they are all trying to reapply their own scent to themselves, getting back to normal versus investigating the cat that smells different. If bringing all the cats to the groomer is not practical or something the owner is not interested in, another option that will profit your business while keeping harmony in the home is grooming the cat more frequently. If one cat is on a 4–6 week schedule, after a few grooms, the other cats will get used to Fluffy leaving for the day and coming home smelling different. Be assured the home environment will return to normal in a day or two, with the exception of a freshly groomed cat. While Hissy Fits can be surprising, upsetting and concerning for owners, they will pass without human intervention while giving you an opportunity to raise your bottom line! ✂

Keeping Your Cosmetics
Grooming products come in every conceivable size and shape of container. Gallon jugs, tubes, jars and bottles are some of the many ways our products are delivered to our shops and salons.

e all know the value of sanitizing the bottles and bowls that we mix products in, but the containers of the products themselves are often overlooked. Keeping the product sanitary, while transferring it to the mixing bottle or bowl, is one of the most forgotten and important steps to keeping germs and bacteria in the salon at a manageable level. Even clean hands hold germs and bacteria in the tiny ridges of the fingerprint and the jagged surfaces of the nails and cuticles. Touching the surface of a newly opened cosmetic product can contaminate that product and spread germs to other surfaces, people and pets. Now imagine

These biological contaminants can be found anywhere in the shop including your hair, smock, pencils, computer keyboard, face and hands which, if you are not careful, could end up inside the bottles of your precious shampoo and conditioner products. While we have become more aware of the necessity in sanitizing our mixing bottles and bowls and utensils, the cleanliness of the original container is quite often compro-

mised. This can lead to contamination of grooming tools, table surfaces and even the skin of the pets you are working on. When opening a new gallon jug, jar or container, the outside should be wiped off before you break the seal. Care should be taken that the product is not “backwashed” into the container. If you have a spill, the spilled product should never be put back into the uncontaminated container, use immediately or wipe up and throw away. Tubes that lead to bathing systems should be washed out with a disinfecting solution on a weekly basis or at least when it is time to insert them into a new container

Pumps that fit into our gallon jugs should be taken apart and disinfected every time you transfer it to a new container. An uncomplicated way to clean pumps is to soak them in a bleach solution and/or run them through the dishwasher. Jars are the easiest container to contaminate as it is so easy to scoop product out with your wet hand as needed. Keep a box of large tongue depressors at your mixing station to scoop out product without putting your
hands directly into the clean substance. Spray bottles can also become dirty at the sprayer tip, as we handle them constantly. These tips, as well as the whole sprayer, can be soaked in a bleach solution at least once per week. Mixing a weak bleach solution or other disinfectant to have on hand is a quick and easy way to clean the outside of the bottles you handle daily. Finishing sprays are often used by multiple people in the shop and are often dropped on the floor. Keeping the outside of your spray bottles clean will
help with germ transfer control, especially in shops where groomers have children present. One of my biggest pet peeves is looking at the underside of the pump of hand soap and finding a hardened, dirty, lump of grossness stuck underneath. These things are so easy to clean but are often forgotten. Tins and tubes are also in danger of fermenting germs if the top layer is not wiped off. Care can be taken to use cotton swabs or tissues to dispense the product without touching the surface of the substance.

mopped and cleaned out every evening. The shelves on which you keep your products can also be a hidden source of germs. All of the bottles, gallons and various products can easily be rinsed off in the tub every 1 to 2 weeks to keep the excess product drippings from getting out of hand and the shelving units can get a good bleaching or disinfecting too. The wet, cave–like dankness underneath the tubs are nirvana to mold and bacteria. This area should be kept free of product so that it can be mopped and cleaned out every evening. Even the surfaces of the tubs and both sides of any mats and tub racks you may use should get a good weekly scrubbing. If you are fortunate
enough to have direct sunlight, after scrubbing, mats and racks can be left out in the sun for further disinfection. Trash cans should also be scrubbed out, even if you use liners. It is always good to remember that germs, bacteria and fungus are everywhere at all times. It is in the maintenance that one can keep them at a tolerable level. The cosmetics that we purchase to use on the pets we groom are costly and precious and need as much protection and care from germs as possible. In the midst of all of the things we do to keep our salons safe, healthy and prosperous, be sure to give your products the loving care they deserve by keeping them clean. ✂

SERVICES (AND GETTING YOUR EMPLOYEES TO SELL THEM)
Dear Michell, I feel like my employees are missing opportunities for add-on services that could add up to good income for both me and my employees. Do you have any ideas of areas to focus on?
H
i Sarah. Here are five common areas where salons lose the opportunity to profit from their labor and products. 1. Flea baths are one of the worst culprits. You put the dog or cat in the bathtub and give it a complete bath only to discover
58
that dog or cat has fleas during the drying process. Now you must go back to the tub and start over with additional time and more products, and let’s not forget the treatment of the salon at the end of the day to be sure no fleas escaped their deaths. In some instances, you are fortunate enough to know before the bath if

the dog has fleas and these factors do not come into play. Create a price that covers all these instances and your staff will be more interested in selling and performing the service. 2. Do you include the additional labor and clean up time for large double coated breeds in their price? When implementing a price increase

for these services, don’t overlook the wear and tear, filth and additional labor involved in grooming these breeds. Consider charging 20% more and your staff might actually start enjoying the work it takes to make one of these beasts look its best instead of dreading it. This applies to large and extra–large breeds that are not double coated as well. 3. After hours pick–up fees are an important policy to enforce. When a customer requires a member
of your staff to stay late and wait for them—that costs money. This is a case where it is important to remember that this is business. It is not personal. If you, the business owner, are required to pay an employee to stay late for a customer to pick up late, the customer surely understands that there is a charge for that. Any good customer would offer to pay you for your time even if you don’t have that policy. This is a must—especially for repeat offenders. You might find that you
have employees volunteering to be the one that stays and looks at Facebook on their phone while they wait, just to make a few easy bucks. 4. Some salons keep pets all or half the day. Some salons groom one Potential pet at a time. If you keep pets all day, charge for an expedited grooming service. If you groom each pet one at a Potential time, charge a daycare fee for keeping their pet longer. You are providing a service that is in additionPotential to your normal service therefore it has value and should be charged accordingly. Potential 5. Lastly, de–matting is a big one. So many groomers are simply not skilled for de–matting. It can be a Potential simple, humane and lucrative service to provide in your salon, if you learn the skill. It creates income two-fold. Potential First you create income on a client who would otherwise be a shave-down. Second, you have created aPotential style that requires that the client return in six weeks rather than six months. Nice! I hope these ideas are helpful! ✂

We want to be kept up to date on the newest products, services, styles and even business practices. Many of us want the science behind the haircut. We want to offer the best we can to our customers. our customers about things that we discover (that may not be healthy) when grooming. We see pets more often than the veterinarian and want to know how we can help identify potential problems, and recommend veterinary intervention. There are standards and licensing for many different professions like mechanics, stock brokers, hair dressers, barbers, massage therapists, and more. Why are we any different? of being told they must do their job a certain way. After all, I am sure every singe one of us has heard someone in our industry, or even ourselves say, “that’s just the way I have always done it and my customers are happy with it, so I don’t need to change.” But change is inevitable. Our industry is changing daily, new products are introduced, and new scientific based facts are coming to us at break–neck speed. We need this info to provide the best skin and coat care for our clients. Some protest they are just too

busy, or can’t afford to take classes or attend shows. With our industry at a cross road, you can’t afford not to keep up to date on what is happening in grooming today. This industry is exploding right now, and those that are moving forward will be able to stay afloat in the midst of changes. Not only to our grooming itself, but learning things like how to navigate through social media, ratings sites, advertising and more! salons, you should have a set of written standards to work from. This is what licensing is all about; setting an elevated standard of care. We as an industry need to be held accountable for the actions we take with our business since our business is working on and with living creatures. There are standards and licensing for many different professions like mechanics, stock brokers, hair dressers, barbers, massage therapists, and more. Why are we any different? What make us immune to being held to a higher standard? I, for one, want
to be looked at as a professional in my industry, not just someone who picked up a clipper one day and decided to shave animals willy–nilly. Our industry needs to have standards of care just like cosmetologists do. We need to have the following in place:
1. SANITATION STANDARDS This is paramount in our work. We need to maintain a clean and sanitized environment for the animals that we work with. Diseases can easily get a foothold and infect many pets who come into an unsanitary work environment, thus spreading it outside the salon to communities. Many diseases are Zoonotic in nature and will affect the owners and their family as well. Our working conditions contain wetness, dampness, animal waste and animal bodily fluids—a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.
2. STANDARDS OF CARE We should have a baseline of how every animal is treated when seeing the groomer, including proper techniques for holding, bathing, etc. This is for their safety and ours. We are not veterinarians, and should not ever treat or diagnose any issue
Celebrating 106 Years!
a pet may have while in our care. We need to work closely with the pet’s veterinarian so that we can work together for the betterment of the pet's health. This also will help with weeding out the seedy businesses who circumvent their city licensing, insurance and other safeguards that are necessary to become a state licensed groomer. They will never go away, but it will be much harder for them to operate unnoticed when licensing becomes the norm.
3. CONTINUING EDUCATION We need to have C.E. as a requirement. How are you ever going to move forward as a professional if you are still using the practices you used 20, 10, or even 5 years ago? Changes are coming to our industry at light speed. We need to keep up and be an educated example of what a professional pet groomer is. We also need to be able to educate our customer on proper care of their pets. We need to know about nutrition, skin and coat, behavior and superior products. This is our job; our

We need to have standards for ourselves so that things like groomers being attacked by pets are not tolerated. We need to have safety for our health—no more groomer lung, groomer knees, groomer elbow…the broken groomer’s body. customers look to us for advice on these subjects.
4. STATE LICENSING EXAM I think this is what most fear about getting licensed. Taking a written exam and a practical exam. These exams should not be so hard as to phase out groomers, but to show that you have a working knowledge of how to be a professional pet groomer.
This is what will standardize our industry. Each state will be able to set its own regulatory rules. You should be able to get reciprocity from state to state for those that move to another state or travel and work. State licensing isn’t something to be feared. As groomers, most of us are tactile learners. We don’t have time to be studying long hours to take massive tests to show we can groom. We need

to have practical rules for hard working people who will take the time to update their knowledge so that they can provide the best care and services to their customers. We need to have standards for ourselves so that things like groomers being attacked by pets are not tolerated. We need to have safety for our health—no more groomer lung, groomer knees, groomer elbow…the broken groomer’s body. By elevating ourselves we also learn to set a standard to say no to some things. We no longer must risk our life and limb to feed our families. Customers will slowly adapt to the new rules of seeing a licensed professional groomer. They will also adapt to price changes that come with having a higher standard of care for their pets. Licensing for our industry is inevitable. I have been working on and off with individuals in my state for more than 10 years now. We are a bit closer, and as a younger generation moves into our industry, they want different things for the industry. That’s not to say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. There are plenty of well–seasoned groomers (like myself) that are adjusting to the changes, embracing them and looking forward to the day when we no longer hear these words out of a fellow groomer's mouth… “Oh I am just a groomer.” ✂
